Positive contributions to society I can’t leave you guys in charge of anything for two minutes. No sooner had RR taken a few days R&R, when all breaks loose back here.

You lose the cricket to Australia. Then you lose the Prime Minister. Crate Day goes badly. (Or according to plan, depending on your expected outcome of Crate Day.) On top of all that, you still haven’t found Harry or Winston the dogs and fireworks continue to be the bane of civilised society.

Really people, you’ve only got a few weeks of the year left, so I suggest you pull your act together and clean the place up. If nothing else, bring home Harry and Winston for Christmas.

You’ve also been a let-down in the ratings for worldwide notoriety while improving the quality of human genetics.

New Zealanders are failing miserably in the rankings of death and injury due to stupidity.

Santiago Alvarado, a burglar, was killed as he fell through the ceiling of a bicycle shop. Death was caused when the long flashlight he had placed in his mouth to keep his hands free rammed into the base of his skull as he hit the floor.

Paul Stiller, 47, and his wife Bonnie were bored just driving around at 2am.

Cancelled parties

The year’s Darwin Awards, dished out to those who have removed themselves from the gene pool in the most spectacular and stupid methods, do not feature any Kiwis, despite our “can-do” approach and “she’ll be right” attitude.

It won’t be helped by new statistics that indicate a third of NZ businesses have cancelled their Christmas parties, which traditionally have been a seed bed for idiotic acts, resulting in pain and death.

Presumably that is the aim of the Health and Safety Act, which is taking the blame for Christmas being cancelled.

It seems employers could be held responsible for any transport accidents, dance floor mishaps and other mayhem at parties in which alcohol and festive spirit are mixed.

But despite NZ dragging its commitment to the Darwin Awards, the list of recipients make great reading, according to rampant RR fan, Keith.

failed to notice that the window was closed.

The UK’s Metro reports that Iraqi terrorist Khay Rahnajet decided to send out a letter bomb in 2000. Not being the brightest of sparks he forgot to put enough postage stamps on the letter, meaning it came back to the ‘return to sender’ address. Khay was so happy to receive some post that he ripped it open.

His career in terrorism ended there.

Outgunned: After stepping around a marked police patrol car parked at the

front door, a man walked into a firearms store, intent on robbing. The shop was full of customers and a uniformed officer was standing at the counter. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up and fired a few wild shots.

The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire and several customers also drew their guns and fired. Paramedics pronounced the robber dead at the scene.

The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons. No one else was hurt.

Footloose fool

Kerry Bingham earned an honourable mention: He had been drinking with several friends when they decided it was a great idea to bungee jump from a local bridge at 4.30 in the morning. Upon arrival at the midpoint of the bridge, they discovered that no one had brought a bungee rope.

Bingham, who had continued drinking, found a coil of lineman’s cable lay nearby.

They secured one end around Bingham’s leg and then tied the other to the bridge.

His fall lasted 40 feet, the cable tightened and tore his foot off at the ankle. He miraculously survived his fall into the icy water and was rescued by two nearby fishermen. Bingham’s foot was never located.

Unless, of course, you are of low genetic value to the human race. Anyone who reads this column is clearly of high value, so you take care. But the rest?

All I can say is please take selfies as you bungee jump, experiment with dynamite, and open your Christmas card surprises.

Otumoetai crash witnesses sought Police investigating the fatal crash that saw a ute smash through the bedroom of an Otumoetai home on Monday are appealing for witnesses.

Sylvia Lawrence was sound asleep when a ute came crashing through her bedroom about 1am.

The driver of the ute died at the scene and the passenger, a 17-year-old, was taken to Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries.

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to Police are asked to contact Senior Sergeant Ian Campion on 07 577 4300.

Snapper plan accepted The first collaborative long-term plan for the future management of New Zealand’s most valuable snapper fisheries is being approved by Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy. “The Snapper 1 Management Plan is the result of more than two years’ hard work by the SNA1 Strategy Group, which is made up of members from the customary, recreational and commercial fishing sectors.”

A draft plan was released in September and went out for public discussion, including public meetings.

‘Tis the season for planting Summer has now officially started and after a wet spring many cannabis growers will be tending what they hope will be a bumper crop.

In light of this, Police are asking the public, especially the rural community, to be on the lookout for suspicious activity as new cannabis crops are planted during the next few months.

“Organised offending like this occurring in rural areas has a direct influence on other types of crime, such as thefts, burglaries, robberies, serious violence and intimidation,” say Police.

This week our Prime Minister announced he will be resigning and New Zealand will have a new leader in the coming weeks.

John Key’s legacy will be as one of the greatest leaders this country and the National Party has ever seen.

His leadership of National has been exceptional and he leaves an amazing legacy of a country that is now the envy of many others in the world. I wish John and his family all the best for the future.

Currently, government ministers are working on developing, then rolling out, support packages for people affected by the Kaikoura earthquake and its aftershocks.

But the recent display of the force of nature has been a timely reminder to all New Zealanders about the need to be prepared for potential natural disaster events. It is important we ensure we are prepared not just for ourselves, but for the ones we care for – families, friends, elderly neighbours or the young family next door.

We can’t be shy about sitting down with family to talk about a plan and how we might work together and check-up on each other in the event of an earthquake.

Just as it is prudent to have a personal plan of action for challenging times, it is the same with the economy.

The best-performing societies in the world don’t get there by luck. They get there by adopting polices which reward investment in job-creating, and income growth-supporting enterprises.

Has he agreed to take up a lucrative position offshore with one of his muchsupported multi-national corporations?

All we have is conjecture, and a decided lack of care shown for the emotional and economic state of the country. Key has expended a lot of political capital trying to take Mt Roskill from Labour, after losing Northland to New Zealand First. He tried to spin it as a ‘safe Labour seat’ story, after previously calling it a ‘referendum on Andrew Little’s leadership’.

No matter what the reasons, Key is going, and New Zealand is now looking for strong leadership, with a change mandate, and the ability to steady the ship of state. We humbly submit that a leader with a proven track record of consistency, and care for the needs of all New Zealanders, with a commitment to positive change, is ready to lead the country, as he has similarly led the party he founded.

No dead wood will be tolerated, we need a straighttalker unafraid to speak the truth whether it’s currently fashionable or popular; and everything done with high expectations of himself and all he works with. We need Winston. New Zealand needs New Zealand First.

A united brass band strikes up

The colour of their jackets is really the only thing that sets these men apart.

David Lawrence, in his sober green jacket, plays in the Tauranga Brass Band. He’s a Salvationist.

David Ansell, in his vibrant turquoise jacket, plays in the Tauranga City Silver Band. He’s a Methodist. The Salvation Army has its roots in Methodism and so it was inevitable one day the two men would bring together their combined 120 years, or thereabouts, of brass banding and play harmoniously from the same music sheet.

It’s a watershed moment for the bandsmen. “As good Methodists and Salvationists we are quite happy with each other,” says David Ansell. And as veteran lifelong bandsmen they are quite happy with each other too.

“It had to happen” says David Lawrence.

“Tauranga needs a good brass band and the only way to do that was to combine the two groups; the two bands. And I’m looking forward to the concert, oh yes!”. The concert being The Combined Brass Concert at the Wesley Methodist Church in 13th Ave this Sunday afternoon, December 11.

The coming together of two brass bands after more than 50 years of steadfast separation.

“There’s been a totally different feel at rehearsals,” says David Ansell. “There’s more sound; there’s more capacity to do the things you need to do to have a living band. I’m really looking forward to the concert.” When either band practised there would only be just a handful of players. Lately there’s been 23 players at rehearsals.

But there’s room for plenty more.

Pragmatism is at play here too. Two bands, proud and independent

but with dwindling numbers and dwindling interest. One band asset rich; the other cash rich.

“So the coming together was one of those very necessary things to happen,” says David Lawrence.

So a concert on one hand and a celebration on the other – a celebration that brass banding just may have been brought back from the brink in Tauranga by men with a lifelong commitment to their music. There are signs it may even flourish. Because playing the cornet, 65 years David’s junior, is Annabelle Stewart of Mount Maunganui College. She’s 16, the youngest in the band, and a violinist who’s dabbled with piano and guitar and teaches the recorder.

“There are some interesting characters,” says Annabelle.

“That’s half the fun. The jokes, the laughing and the music of course.”

The Combined Brass Concert is December 11, at the Methodist Church, at 1.30pm. Entry is adults $10 and children $3.

Sea change looming at surf club A dispute over the Omanu Surf Life Saving Club’s new lease may result in Tauranga City Council changing the funding appproach to all Western Bay of Plenty surf lifesaving clubs.

Denis is supported by the club members at the meeting, including environmental lawyer Kate BarryPiceno, who says the growing population along the coast means the council should be considering the surf clubs as essential infrastructure.

The club is hiring out its accommodation to “keep the lights on”. Denis says he would far rather pay a levy on his rates as they do in the Waikato. Kate says it’s a $3.72 levy per ratepayer per year. Denis offered to pay in advance.

The Omanu club is the second-largest in the country.

The discussion covered membership numbers, and how many lifeguards were generated by a large membership base for the summer surf lifesaving beach patrols. It also ranged over the patrolling methods being adopted, satellite bases and the accepted reality that there will at some stage be a new surf lifesaving club east of Papamoa.

Tauranga Mayor Greg Brownless halted discussion after about an hour, saying councillors will consider the information arising from the discussion and make a decision at the next meeting.

The council this week was set to approve a new 30-year lease for the club’s occupation of reserve land at the end of Surf Rd, but faced opposition from neighbours, concerned the council is overstepping its legal bounds.

Neighbour Denis McMahon’s main objection is over the use of the bunkroom as paid accommodation by the club, which is against the existing lease, but included in the new lease. If it goes through unchanged he will take the council to court, says Denis in his submission.

The McMahons like living next to the surf club, the activity, the people.

They don’t like the disturbance created by groups of non-surf lifesaving people staying there.

Crooners get ready Christmas carols will be warbled out all over the Bay this weekend as festive events take place.

There’s a songsheet of Christmas carol events happening around the Western Bay of Plenty this weekend – but one traditional occasion is to be warbled with a twist.

Co-organiser Beth Bowden says the tradition of singing carols at the Te Puna Quarry Park continues tomorrow night, December 10, starting 7pm.

But among crooners, for the very first time, will be choristers from Te Puna School who’ve been practising the best-known carols on the list.

“And, in keeping with the tradition of songs of joy and peace, we’ll also sing for those who have had a not-so-joyful and peaceful end to the year, this year.”

Beth won’t say just how this will happen on the night.

“You’ll have to come along to find out.

“But it’s meaningful and affirming, and not at all gloomy.

“Although I’m hoping there’ll be a few misty eyes and voices

– as well as maximum audience involvement.”

Beth and the choir, and front-of house personnel, the Bethlehem/ Te Puna Lions, have been planning the quality event.

“Everyone says how wonderful it is to sing in the magical surroundings of the quarry park” says Beth. “So we work pretty hard to make it possible – and this year we don’t have the Te Puna Memorial Hall to fall back on.”

Entry is by carload, at $5 per car.

In wet-weather the concert will shift from the amphitheatre to the Quarry Gallery and the Dragon Lawn.

“We don’t expect a huge turnout in dodgy weather,” says Beth.

“But we know that some people do want to tog up and come anyway – and unless it’s a torrent, making driving and parking unsafe, we’ll be singing, even to a very small audience.” Beth says watch the Te Puna Quarry Park Facebook page for event updates.

Also on tomorrow, December 10, is Tauranga’s Christmas in the Park event at Blake Park, Mount Maunganui, from 1pm-8pm.

The annual community-focused

Christmas fundraising event offers a day of entertainment, fun, food and laughter. It’s a most unlikely union – Santa Claus, hotrod fiends and abandoned cats.

But it seems to work very well close to Christmas.

That’s when the hot rodders and classic owners climb in their cars and run a convoy around the most spectacular displays of Christmas lights in the city.

And on the way they raise money for the SPCA. “This time of the year the focus is on people and people in need,” says Andi Whitley, organiser of the Tauranga Hot Rod, Classic Car and Motorcycle Christmas light trail ride. “But there are animals out there that get forgotten at this time of the year.”

Last year a convoy of between 20 and 30 cars dropped by 18 Christmas light displays in and two-and-a-half hours. “We just cruised by some,” says Andi. “Otherwise, we would never have got finished. The events been growing each of its four years. But because there are no registrations, organisers have to wait until the night, Thursday, December 15 at 8.30pm when the cars roll out, to see exactly who’s turned up.

“We have always liked Christmas lights. We would grab some egg nog, get some friends together, find someone with a big car, jump in the back and cruise around and have a look.” Then the friend said why don’t they get more cars and more people involved?

And the hotrod, classic car and motorcycle Christmas light run was born.

Before then the crew will jump in a car every night for a week and check the locations, the best lights on offer and draw up a map. There’s only a small window of opportunity to do the reconnaissance – after dark and before the lights go off at 11pm.

Then there’s the logistics of getting all the cars in and out of one destination, which ones do they stop at, where they can park up and which displays they cruise on by.

“We do stop at some amazing displays. The cars overheat so it gives them a chance to cool and for people to mingle.”

Everyone’s welcome to join the convoy at Retro America in Portside Drive at Mount Maunganui.

“It’s a good family thing to do. When everyone’s going 100m/hr and thinking about presents, take some time out and have fun with the family.” And make an SPCA animal comfortable for Christmas too. The Tauranga Hot Rod, Classic Car and Motorcycle Christmas light trail ride is on Thursday, December 15 at 8.30pm, starting from Retro America in Portside Drive, Mount Maunganui.

There’s a sausage sizzle at 6.30pm and the convoy rolls out at 8.30pm. But don’t forget the SPCA – a gold coin or tins of food and kitty litter for cats.

Perhaps all three. After all, it’s Christmas.

The tsunami siren discussion has been re-opened with the Tauranga City Council voting this week to direct staff to take another look at siren systems, on the back of text alert failures following the Kaikoura earthquake on November 14.

Tauranga City councillor Steve Morris’ notice of motion wanting TCC staff to re-look at the siren issue and report back to councillors was unanimously adopted.

Staff are to present a paper on sirens for a future meeting, and the Government will be reminded on the need for a 24/7 emergency operations centre.

Many people didn’t find out a tsunami text alert was sent following the Kaikoura earthquake until they turned on their phones the following morning, says Steve.

“It could have been any Civil Defence emergency; people were told but they didn’t know,” says Steve.

Grace Raven from Flames of Plenty will be performing tomorrow night as part of The Magic of Mainstreet event, welcoming overnight passengers and crew from the Celebrity Solstice cruise ship.

The cruise ship Celebrity Solstice is 315 metres long – a rugby field is 100m. It has 121,878 gross tonnage – the Aratere Interislander is 17,816GT. Celebrity Solstice is 63 metres high – the Oceanside Towers in Mount Maunganui are 33m.

And the cruise ship will also bring with it 4350 passengers and crew – Baycourt seats 577.

So a big cruise ship calls for a big event – and tomorrow night’s Magic of Mount Mainstreet is rising to the challenge.

On November 20 the Celebrity Solstice was here as the first-ever overnight cruise ship in Tauranga, and hundreds of people attended the special Little Big Markets in Coronation Park that night.

Mount Mainstreet manager Ingrid Fleming says the markets were so busy, the crowds spilled over.

“The queues were so long for food, people came into town and ate at local restaurants and cafes.”

Tomorrow night’s event will feature buskers up and down the street, late-night shopping to 7pm, free bubble-blowing for the kids, pony cycle animal rides for little kids and adults who never grew up, fire dancing at dusk, a free photo both, free helium balloons, free lollies – and more.

“It’s all about creating a cool atmosphere down Mount Mainstreet.”

Ingrid expects many passengers will have dinner on the ship, and she wants to encourage them to come off after dinner.

“They can really enjoy the atmosphere on land, and take those lasting memories back to their hometowns around the world, which is great for our region.”

The Magic of Mount Mainstreet is on tomorrow night, December 10, from 5pm-9pm, along Karolyn Timarkos Maunganui Rd.

Key meeting on cycleways around the Bay The fate of the Bayfair pedestrian-cycle underpass may be decided at a meeting this Monday, December 12, between the Sustainable Business Network’s BikeNow and the New Zealand Transport Agency’s cycleway specialist from Wellington.

The news comes as another cycle group, Bike Mount, calls for a public petition to protect the underpass.

Bike Mount believes the underpass will be demolished during construction of the Baypark to Bayfair project, as it disappears from the plans so far made public.

Fellow local group BikeNow has been dealing with the NZTA over cycleways in Tauranga.

BikeNow spokesman Glen Crowther thinks confusion over cycleways may be an NZTA issue.

The transport authority started the whole process without their cycling team developing guidelines, says Glen. Then in July those design guidelines came out.

“At the Sustainable Business Network we are strongly supportive of those design guidelines and they being used well in Rotorua; and we would like to see them being used well and implemented in Tauranga,” says Glen.

“What we are really saying is that perhaps through no fault of their own the people involved in the Baypark to Bayfair project came up with what seemed at the time to be good cycleways, but we are suggesting they go back and revisit those designs because in the meantime their own cycleways team has come up with better quality design guidelines,” says Glen.

“And we are just suggesting that they implement their own design guidelines for this project. It’s just a matter of timing.”

BikeNow is also saying is the intersection at Bayfair is a key part of the Tauranga cycleways network where all the cyclists from Papamoa and Arataki go through that intersection to get across to the Matapihi link to the CBD. “We do have some concerns about cycleways and so we are hoping for, you could say, broadly similar outcomes to what Bike Mount wants,” says Glen. “We have similar ends to be honest, and I think NZTA does as well; and I think the [Tauranga] city council do too.

“The key thing is we just need to work through the process, the outcome being genuinely safe cycleways there, and we hope right throughout Tauranga City.”

BOP Blind Cricket captain Steph Jobson is all geared up for the first home game this Sunday.

The first T20 game against Manukau South begins at 10am, followed by a match against Waikato after lunch.

Team captain and Bay of Plenty Blind Sports Club president Steph Jobson says the sport is growing, and is a great way for visually-impaired people to stay active.

Blind cricket is played with a special plastic ball filled with ball bearings and metal wickets, to make it easier to hear. They also bowl under arm.

“The wicket keeper and bowler also have to be very vocal to give a sense of direction.

“There’s huge communication on the field,” says Steph.

She says players range from totally blind people, to those with very strong prescription lenses. For example, the wicket keeper usually has better vision, to help keep the game running smoothly.

Although big hits are unusual, they’re not impossible either.

“We played two weeks ago and had two people caught out, which is not common.

“We have a couple of guys with really powerful swings, and they manage to get the ball up in the air.”

Steph says Manukau is definitely the team to beat this Sunday, with many of their players also in the New Zealand team going to the world cup in India next year.

Write for Rights tomorrow in Red Square Tomorrow in Red Square, Tauranga’s Amnesty International Group will be joining with Amnesty members throughout the world in a letter-writing PROOF marathon.

‘Write for Rights’ is a campaign centred on United Nations Human Rights Day. The public is invited to join Amnesty International members to sign letters to the authorities of a number of countries whose citizens are experiencing human rights violations.

Postcards with messages of support are also sent to the victims themselves to show them they are not alone or forgotten.

This year they are focusing on individuals in nine countries: Indonesia, Australia, Egypt, United States, Azerbaijan, Peru, China, Iran and Malawi.

Amnesty International Tauranga Moana coordinator Gary Ware has been involved with the group for almost 40 years. He says they’ll be addressing human rights abuses in the letters, including Australia’s detention of refugees on Nauru, and Edward Snowden. The American computer professional, former Central Intelligence Agency employee, and former contractor for the United States Government copied and leaked classified information from the National Security Agency in 2013 without prior authorisation.

“Edward Snowden shared intelligence documents with journalists back in 2013, revealing the shocking extent of global mass surveillance,” says Gary.

“We believe his courage has changed the world, sparking a global debate about privacy. But he faces decades in prison if he ever returns to the United States.

So we’re asking President Barack Obama to pardon him before his

term is up.” The group will also be writing to authorities in China about their human rights abuses against ethnic minorities in their country.

“Ilham Tohti is a university professor known for his moderate views on ethnic issues in China.

“He was arrested, and for five months family and friends were not told where he was. He was denied food for 10 days and kept in shackles.

“He was then given a life sentence supposedly for stirring up ethnic hatred.

“He comes from the Uighur community, a largely Muslim ethnic group facing widespread discrimination in China.”

Those interested in helping out can go to Red Square tomorrow to learn more, and lend their signatures to the letters. The group will be set up between 10.30am and 1.30pm, and is aiming to better last year’s total of 189 letters and postcards.

Tauranga secures big acts ‘Always on Time’, ‘What’s Luv’, ‘Mesmerize’ – remember those songs? Ja Rule and Ashanti fans will. And they should start practising their lyrics because the dynamic duo is coming to the Mount this month.

Ashanti and Ja Rule are coming to Tauranga on December 30.

On Friday, December 30, Pato Entertainment and Talk Later presents Ja Rule and Ashanti at Soper Reserve, which promoters are calling ‘Mount Park’ as part of their new venue project.

“This is a one-off experience to see these acts live and direct from the United States in Mount Maunganui,” says event director Pato Alvarez.

“You don’t get these kinds of acts performing here all the time. This is their only New Zealand show.”

Pato says audiences should expect a great show.

“I’ve experienced this show live before and these guys sound even better up close and personal.”

There are 3500 tickets on sale and Pato is confident the show will sell out. “About 40-50 per cent of tickets have already sold and the rest are selling fast.”

Securing big acts like Ashanti and Ja Rule coincides with the development of Tauranga City, says Pato.

“Tauranga is one of the faster growing cities in the country – and with these kinds of events happening exclusively in Tauranga it’s awesome for the economy, as this event should bring in thousands of people from out of town.”

The artists will be in Tauranga for two nights and Pato is looking forward to showing them around the city.

“They love New Zealand,” says Pato. “Most of the international artists we bring to NZ always want to come back so that says it all.

“We look after them really well while they here.”

Celebrating artistic diversity One-fifth of Tauranga’s residents were born overseas – and it turns out, they’re a talented bunch.

International and local exhibitors have joined forces for an exhibition called Our World’s Got Talent at Multicultural Tauranga showcasing painting, needlework, photographs, decorated cakes, harakeke, sculptures, pottery, ceramic masks, and other craft items.

Multicultural Tauranga centre manager Janet Smith says a lot of the work is reflective of artistic training undertaken in the migrants’ home countries.

“We’re hoping this is a good way to connect them with the local art scene.”

Multicultural Tauranga creative officer Alessandra Tilby agrees. “We hope to give the artists the opportunity to be seen; to create a window into their world and their cultures through their art.

“It’s very exciting for them, this avenue to put their work out there.”

During the last few months she’s put together an exhibition showing works of 14 artists from 10 countries: Solomon Islands, Korea, Brazil, Japan, Italy, Iran, Philippines, Bolivia, the Netherlands and Colombia.

Some artists are members of Multicultural Tauranga; others have a different affiliation with multi-culturalism or the organisation.

Janet says this year’s exhibition has, unintentionally, a bit of a floral theme. “There’s a beautifully decorated rose cake, stunning paper flowers, the ceramic mask is topped off with flowers, and there’s a lovely painting of a little girl with flowers in her hair.”

The concept for the exhibition started six months ago, during conversation at Multicultural Tauranga’s Newcomers Group and English classes.

“They were identifying what they enjoy doing as hobbies, and what their skills are. It became apparent there was a lot of creative talent in the group, so we thought that would be a good starting point.”

From the members of those groups came referrals to

The artists all work individually at home, so Janet sees the exhibition as a great chance to showcase a diversity of work in one place.

Gareth Morgan has new political party called The Opportunities Party.

But the map has changed significantly in the last week. Two days after Prime Minister John Key’s jolting announcement he is resigning, Gareth and his newly-formed The Opportunities Party announced their first policy in Auckland on Wednesday.

And Gareth isn’t too concerned about who is running the country. He thinks the current bunch of politicians have cemented themselves to the short-term or three-year goal of getting re-elected.

“They avoid the tough decisions,” says Gareth. “Half of the time they propose policies that won’t even achieve what they say they will.

“This [tax reform] policy is the one which will make the biggest difference to our lives. It’s all about making New Zealand fair again,” says Gareth.

“The end result of this policy will be more jobs, more affordable housing, more business growth and tax cuts that leave 80 per cent of the population better off.”

And he’s clear about what he wants to achieve. “We are simply changing who pays the tax. The Government needs money to pay for things.”

provocations, Gareth wants to start a new robust conversation among the average Kiwi.

He’s laying out what he believes is an aspirational blueprint for both those who are benefitting from the property prices, and those who find themselves stymied from home ownership.

He wants to light a fuse, and influence the Government of the day.

“We want to change what is taxed, not the amount of tax collected,” says Gareth.

“Any increase in revenue will be used to reduce income rates. Under the reform we propose, around 80 per cent of the public will be better off, the 20 per cent that aren’t can well ‘afford’ it.”

The tax policy advances a minimum rate of return on assets such as housing and land. He references John Key and himself as examples of those who’ll end up paying more tax from this policy.

Gareth’s outlined how the large pool of untaxed income was benefiting people who owned assets they’d accumulated.

The growing wealth to homeowners from the increasing house prices produced no or very little taxable income. This isn’t viewed by him as a capital gains tax but as an efficient and fair way to ensure everyone has the same opportunity.

“Our policies aim to make most New Zealanders better off in the longterm,” says Gareth.

“Our country needs to make hard choices, but in the short-term people are afraid of change.”

Twelve days of Christmas takes off Let’s organise a Christmas festival at the Historic Village.

Let’s make it 12 days.

It’ll be fun.

Coordinator and village tenant Jen Murray made a suggestion back in June at a tenants’ meeting at the Historic

Village, and a keen group of supporters quickly jumped on board. Fun? Yes. Hundreds of hours of work by dozens of volunteers? You bet.

The final result – the Historic Village’s inaugural ’12 Days of Christmas’ event – will begin on Tuesday, December 13, with an Opening Night Street Party – and will carry on until Friday,

December 24 with a string of events to tickle all sorts of festive fancies.

“Heaps” of people helped along the way, from Village tenants to businesses in the wider community and individuals who joined in.

Jen says the tenants worked together to create the 12 Days of Christmas. “We had teams who worked out the structure based on the strengths of the people involved, and who could do what.”

There’s great camaraderie amongst the village tenants. “There’s a big social conscience down here. It’s like being part of a small community, and the public contributes to that.

“It’s a good place to create a hub, and a festival where lots of people can be involved.”

Jen wanted an event that wasn’t about pouring large amounts of money into something. “It’s about engaging with people, talking to them, and asking if they want to be involved. The village and Christ-mas means so much to so many people.”

And 12 Days of Christmas was put together on an “absolute shoestring” budget, and runs on “number eight wire, Kiwi ingenuity, and pinterest”.

“We used a lot of upcycling, recycling, and donated goods. Volunteers who answered our call to action spent hours creating the decorations.

The Opening Night Street Party is on Tuesday, December 13, from 5.30pm-9pm. “It’ll be a familyfriendly atmosphere to celebrate the village, with exhibition openings at Multicultural Tauranga and The Incubator. There’ll also be music, street entertainment, face painting, and food vendors. To keep it affordable for all, families are welcome to bring their own picnics.”

Events running across the festival include the Christmas Lights Trail, Village Radio Christmas Carols, and a Vintage Christmas Grotto, for people to take their own Christmas pix and selfies. “We didn’t want it to be something where people queued for hours and paid thirty bucks. You can take your own free fun family photos.”

The community are also welcome to pop into Eve’s Shop next to the café during the festival and learn how to make putiputi (fl ax fl owers).

On Thursday, December 15, there’s a free village tour at 11am. “People can come and learn about the history of the Village, and some of the historic buildings.” Meet at the front gates.

Friday, December 16, has Christmas Stories with Kim @ Detour Theatre at 11am, and a special reading by author Gaye Hemsley called ‘Nine Days to Christmas’. Wear your Christmas clothes.

Jen says there are “a whole lot more” events planned for the second part of the 12 Days of Christmas Festival, which will be featured in next week’s paper.

However, Jen would like to give a heads up about one event next weekend – the Decorate a Wheelbarrow competition.

“Dig out your old wheelbarrow, decorate it to a Christmas theme, and come along to the wheelbarrow parade at 12.30 on December 17. Make it a fun family project between now and next Saturday [De-cember 17].”

Affordable housing: It can be done, it must be done

The average sale price of homes in our city rose to more than $615,000 last month, which is welcome equity for homeowners.

But spare a thought for the 35 per cent and growing number of our residents who are renting.

The average Tauranga household income before tax is $55,800.

With house prices rising faster than people can save, more of our residents feel the dream of home ownership is slipping away for good.

But it doesn’t have to be this way; affordable housing isn’t as hard as we’ve been made to think if there’s the political will.

We haven’t built affordable homes in this city for 25 years.

Almost every subdivision has covenants, which include restrictions such as minimum floor area, glazed area, cladding requirements and a minimum number of angles on roofs. In one subdivision in Papamoa you can’t build a home less than 200m2.

Gone are my grandparents’ days of building a 90m2 two-bedroom home and being able to add a bedroom or garage

when you could afford it. This generation has to build their third home first and mortgage themselves up to the eyeballs to do it – if they can.

Instead of tinkering with Special Housing Areas, which deliver the same houses at the same price, the Government should amend the Property Law Act and the Resource Management Act to give councils the power to ensure that 20 per cent of sections in new subdivisions don’t have covenants and allow people to build modest homes again.

Unpopular for sure, but would you rather live next door to modest homeowners or live within a nation of renters?

Next week I’ll discuss the price of building materials and the oncoming storm 30 years from now if we don’t act soon.

Housing the masses this silly season A colleague of mine took a very deep sigh when I asked what she was doing for Christmas. “My partner’s family is showing up.” Meaning 10 people – who usually bicker when together for more than five minutes – and one toilet and bathroom. Yikes!

Another lady at the supermarket lent over and said: “At least you don’t have 16 people aged from six to 60 turning up from Australia on December 24 for two weeks!” I said: “No thanks!”

Christmas is a time for family and togetherness but sometimes all of you under one roof for more than few days can be challenging.

So to stop everyone stepping on toes, walking on egg shells, or putting feet in their mouths, here’s some tips to survive housing the masses this season.

First, and most crucially, sleeping arrangements. No one likes a bad sleep – especially when on holiday. So how can you house the hoards?

Well if there’s children is it possible they can stay in tents on the lawn? It could be a novel way for them to spend their holiday while leaving adults to

much-needed quiet space and time at the end of the day.

Or – if you can manage it at yours – could you sleep your visitors at one end of the house? That way they retain their privacy – and sanity – as well.

If not – try grouping together mum, dad and the kids in one space.

That way grandma’s transistor radio curdling out high-pitched opera all night long isn’t going to cause friction.

And at least they have all-hours access to leftovers in the fridge.

Secondly, bathrooms. If you have one God help you! No, just make it clear everyone keeps operations fast and clean. Some Dettol liquid soap could help keep germs – and seasonal bugs floating around – at bay.

And make it a job for a different person each day to give the bathroom a mini clean – wipe down shower, clean toilet and basin. Sorted.

Because while things can be cramped on the living front at Christmas, the time you have with family and friends is limited on this earth. So learn to enjoy it – warts and all.

Are your home and items covered?

Have you bought a pricey item for the home or wife? A tool to help hubby around the backyard perhaps. Or a new machine or the kitchen.

Whatever it is – the first call you should make is to your insurer to make sure you home or contents policy covers and suits the new item, according to a new survey.

As part of the ‘IAG Safety Insights Monitor’ survey carried out in June it asked 800 Kiwis what situations would prompt them to contact their insurer.

A pricey purchase emerged as the most likely reason we would touch base with our insurer. Almost two-thirds of us – at 65 per cent – said we’d update our policy to include an expensive new item, such as a piece of art or jewellery or a coin collection.

And women are marginally more likely than men to protect their more precious assets, with two in three – or 66 per cent – of women saying they’d ring in a new purchase to their insurer, compared to slightly fewer

“Most policies exclude loss or damage related to ‘structural additions or alterations’ or similar,” says Chris. “‘Contract Works’ cover exists to take care of risks like this.”

Saving Kiwi households millions The Electricity Authority has decided to remove subsidies for generators connected to local electricity distribution networks, called distributed generators.

The authority claims this will lower prices for New Zealand electricity consumers who are currently funding the subsidies.

Once fully implemented, this change will save consumers between $25 million to $35 million per year.

The authority has decided to amend the distributed generation pricing principles so that ‘avoided cost of transmission’ – or ACOT – payments are only made when distributed generators actually reduce transmission costs to consumers and improve the reliability of supply they receive.

Electricity Authority chief executive Carl Hansen says the current rules mean consumers are paying for distributed generation that doesn’t reduce costs for them.

“During the last eight years, the rate of ACOT payments has increased by

79 per cent. Effectively, New Zealand consumers are subsiding the owners of distributed generation.

“Perversely, the more transmission capability we have, the higher the rate of the ACOT subsidy under the current rules.”

Carl says another perverse feature is the current rules encourage distributed generation to be built in locations that “increase future transmission costs rather than avoiding transmission costs”.

This change will be progressively introduced in different parts of the country from April 1, 2018, and will be fully implemented by October 1, 2019.

Following feedback from consultation the authority has decided not to proceed with its proposal to remove a regulated price ceiling for what local electricity distributors can charge generators to connect to their networks.

This issue may be revisited in the future after final decisions about how the costs of the transmission grid are allocated are made, and electricity distributors have made more progress with setting cost-reflective charges.

New property valuations reflect Western Bay growth Western Bay of Plenty’s buoyant economy and development growth has reflected in increased property values across all sectors of the district, according to the latest revaluation results.

Western Bay ratepayers will receive information on their latest property revaluation next week when Western Bay of Plenty District Council sends letters to all property owners.

WBOPDC’s chief financial officer Matt Potton says the overall trend since the 2014 valuation reflects an increase in the value of residential and lifestyle properties, horticultural, dairy and pastoral.

However, the range in values varies across separate communities.

The valuation was carried out last month by the independent valuation firm Landmass Technology and audited by the Valuer-General.

The kiwifruit orchard sector is leading the charge, reflecting the industry’s return of investment and expansion post-PSA.

“Confidence in kiwifruit is evidenced by these properties showing the largest increases in value of all categories in the district,” says Matt.

“Similarly, dairy farms and pastoral properties have increased in value since 2014 indicating long-term confidence in the dairy industry. This confidence has supported property values and strengthened demand for farming land.’’

Development growth in the district since mid-2015 has resulted in residential properties in-creasing in value but, in percentage terms, lowervalue properties have tended to increase more than higher value properties.

The lifestyle market continues to strengthen with the highest jump being vacant lifestyle property, however overall increases are a little less than for residential properties.

Te Puke, Pongakawa and Paengaroa residential and lifestyle property values have increased significantly – which is credited to the Tauranga Eastern Link opening up ease of access.

Revaluations do not necessarily mean an increase in rates. Valuations only impact on the General and

Roading rates, which comprise just a portion of the total rates bill.

Usually only properties where value has increased above the average may face increased rates in 2017/2018.

However, it is important to note the rates have not been determined for the 2017/2018 year.

The new valuations will come into effect on July 1, 2017. Anyone who does not agree with their valuation is

welcome to lodge an objection up until January 27, 2017.

All property owners will receive notice of their new valuation plus a brochure with all of the necessary information about the revaluation process and how to make an objection.

Newborns can become both hot and overtired without effective swaddling.

And overheating is one of the factors that can contribute to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome – or cot – deaths, so it is very important to take the temperature of your baby seriously.

But it’s not just swaddling your baby that causes overheating alone. Babies’ temperature is the effect of a combination of swaddle wrap, technique, clothing, bedding and temperature.

These factors can be individually controlled and diminished to make sure your baby doesn’t get uncomfortably warm.

Remember to consider all the layers on your baby – clothing, baby wrap and the blankets on top. It’s the total combination of layers, rather than one swaddling layer, that will determine if your

baby is too hot or too cold, or just right.

When checking how warm your baby is, slide your hand down onto its chest or feel around its neck.

It should be warm but not hot and sweaty. Don’t worry if baby’s hands are a little chilly, as this should not affect its overall temperature.

And using 100 per cent cotton wraps will help as they breathe better than a synthetic fabric.

It is also essential that newborns sleep with an uncovered head and the sleep environment is clear at all times.

Eating foods ‘as cool as a cucumber’ Eating certain foods could help you keep your cool this summer – giving some truth to the phrase ‘as cool as a cucumber’.

Everybody loves watermelon in summer, and it’s no surprise. In summer, cooling foods such as watermelon can act as internal air conditioning, keeping you cool from the inside out.

Peaches are another great food for keeping your temperature down, and as they are high in vitamins A and C they can help keep your skin looking clear too.

Adding some of the tropics to your fruit salad or smoothie can help keep you feeling refreshed when the temperatures get high. Pineapple is also known to

have the enzyme bromelain, which is credited for reducing inflammation in the body.

Citrus has a wonderful cooling effect on the body and helps detoxification. If plain water is getting a little boring, try adding some lemon, lime or orange to add some zest to your daily hydration. Lemon water is also known to be great for the skin and for boosting the immune system.

And finally, cucumbers are incredibly hydrating and staying hydrated throughout summer is crucial. Snacking on cucumber and hummus could help keep you from overheating.

Celebrating two decades of Christmas magic On the night of December 24, 2006, a donkey, a baby and a handful of volunteers lined the edge of the Wairoa River and tested the waters. There was a nativity scene, carol-singing and the ‘reason for the season’ – and 800 people attended.

Now, in its 20th year, ‘A Night Before Christmas’, thanks to 300 volunteers plus local performers, professional sound, stage and lighting teams, draws more than 8000 people.

So how did Bethlehem Baptist Church turn their annual production into one of the Bay’s most iconic festive events?

In 2006 Craig Vernall was a new minister and resident to the area.

“Jesus was born in Bethlehem, which is how we get our [place] name. So we thought it [an event] was a good idea and people responded really well.

“When we started we hadn’t a clue it was going to get this big,” says Craig, who with wife Michaela have been there from the start.

“For our first event we used the back of a trailer as a stage. We had two generators going – one for lights and one for sound,” says Craig.

“It was a fun night but definitely one of those pioneering efforts.”

The event stayed at Wairoa River for a few years, hopping to a few other locations before arriving at Bethlehem Town Centre in 2009. And that was the turning point for ‘A Night Before Christmas’.

“That’s when it really started to grow,” says Craig.

“And this is also when it started to pull quality musicians, always with the idea of using local people.”

This is also when Luisa Schroder became a stage mum and marketing volunteer. “I got involved because my two children were actors. I was already in the event arena in the Bay – so I suddenly saw this event through my lens. I thought it was very

impressive for a church to be putting this on, pretty much based on volunteers. I thought: ‘This has got huge potential’.”

Back then it had a minimal budget and used sound, lighting and staging from the church.

But Luisa says Tauranga City Council and a few other sponsors got behind it – “and this saw it turn from being a small, homegrown event to something bigger and better”. “Their encouragement, and therefore other community providers, was definitely the turning point.”

Luisa says the event is not only a night of performances. It also brings experience and skills to volunteers, stage-time to young performers – and ultimately builds a stronger community by engaging so many local groups in its making.

“We’ve noticed over the years it’s an opportunity for younger people to work alongside older people and learn skills in all sorts of fields.

“And for an event of this size it’s also been a launching pad for young people to take on their chosen career. This could be staging, production, or professional performers.”

For example, Joshua Beaven has helped out as a volunteer since he was young. Now the 20-year-old is employed full-time by The Production Company, ‘A Night before Christmas’ travelling the country working organiser Luisa Schroder events. And with event founders Craig Luisa’s son Luke and Michaela Vernall at the started off, age original site – Wairoa River.

CHINATOWN Christmas Day put on hold Esther Brignall works in a church. She’s the office administrator at St Peters in the City, the Presbyterian Church in Spring St, Tauranga.

So you’d think she and her family would join the rest of the Christian world to celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25? But no, there is a greater need. Esther and her family have re-designated their Christmas Day – they will celebrate as a family mid-February and have gifted December 25 for the benefit of others.

“We choose to serve at the St Peters Free Community Christmas Dinner,” says Esther.

That’s Esther, her family and 140 other volunteers who turn on a special celebration for 220 guests every year.

“We choose to spend time with people from our community making new friends and catching up with people who attend the dinner year after year,” says Esther.

So it’s a Christmas Day of sorts for the Brignall family on Christmas Day. “My children have

all volunteered at the Christmas dinner for the last five years, doing everything from serving to plating up, washing dishes, vacuuming and more.”

The sweet success of Fruit in Schools Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says this year’s expansion of the successful Fruit in Schools initiative to a record 547 schools has had a positive impact.

“Children need to eat well in order to optimise their learning and that’s why Fruit in Schools is so beneficial to students,” says Jonathan.

“Staff at the school also take part to help encourage students to try new things and influence their healthy eating decisions.

“Fruit in Schools complements the Childhood Obesity Plan. New Zealand is one of the first OECD countries to have a target and a comprehensive plan to tackle childhood obesity.”

Following the Ministry of Education’s decile funding changes, all existing schools have remained in the Fruit in Schools programme, with an additional 77 others eligible to participate.

As a result, a total of 547 schools throughout the country have benefitted in 2016, covering about 103,000 students and about 12,000 staff.

Schools receive high quality seasonal fruit and vegetables, and they sample up to 24 different types of fruit or vegetable during the year.

By the time schools break up for summer, more than 20 million servings will have been dished up.

Feedback from school principals taking part in the programme has been overwhelming positive.

In a recent survey, Maketu School’s acting principal Regan Williams said Fruit in Schools is really beneficial in his school.

“We have the fruit out at interval and lunchtimes and the teachers take it into their classes each morning.

“We also use the fruit for language experience activities where the students make smoothies etc and then write and talk about their learning experiences.”

The Government invests $7.8 million into the Fruit in Schools programme annually. This is being supported by the extra $568 million going into health for 2016-2017 – taking the total health spend to a record $16.1 billion.

scrubbed and bearded mussels in tinfoil with mashed garlic cloves, salt, pepper and parsley? Before closing them into the foil add a splash of white wine and a glug of olive oil.

Fold them up tight in the tinfoil, so no moisture can escape, and grill for about 10 minutes. What will await you will be divine.

Alternatively, mix together fresh herbs, parmesan cheese, finely chopped garlic, black pepper, sea salt, butter and olive oil into a paste-type consistency.

Then grill scrubbed and bearded mussels until they just open. Snap off the shell top. Keep mussels laying in one side of shell and cover each with herb and butter mixture.

Put mussels back on the barbecue and cook until mixture is bubbling and oozy.

To make a kilpatrick version of this you could add bacon to mixture and drizzle Worcester or chilli sauce – or both – over mussels before

returning to the hotplate.

Another idea is to shell mussels, debeard them and cut finely into a bowl. Then in another bowl whisk up egg, milk flour and baking powder to form a smooth batter.

Add the finely chopped raw mussels with salt, pepper, paprika and finely chopped onion.

Then fry the fritter mixture on the barbecue with a little butter.

Mussel fritters with a barbecue flavour are unbeatable!

Strawberries 1 tsp vanilla essence 1 dollop of honey Any other fruit you fancy Method: Whizz all of the ingredients together. If the mixture is too think all more milk or water or fruit juice. If too runny add more rolled oats or banana. Or add extra fruit.

Tip it into a takeaway drinkholder or a tall glass. And enjoy!

After a gruelling 18-hour overnight test, 13-year-old Chase Marshall achieved what he’s been working towards for six years – his black belt in karate.

The grading test, known as the toughest black belt grading in New Zealand, was the culmination of almost half a lifetime of hard work for the ACG Tauranga student.

arrives for Mykal at 7am, gets him out of bed, to get changed and eat breakfast; then get’s him into the taxi for school.

There, a teacher aid helps support Mykal during his school-day.

In the afternoon another support worker meets Mykal at home and helps with the usual teenage tasks such as homework and housework before some free time activities; more often than not, Lego.

“If his whole life is going to be like this I figure why not create this once-in-a-lifetime experience for him? And hopefully I’ve got the means to make it happen,” says Dave. When Mykal came up with an idea of creating a video to help fund Holder’s rallying career, the 27-year-old was quick to twist it into raising funds to take the teen to Legoland and Florida.

Dave’s now created a Givealittle page to help raise the $15,000 required for the overseas adventure.

“I want to take two support workers because it’s pretty crucial with him being overseas; the travel makes it a bit more difficult than his normal activities,” says Dave.

He recently cared for Mykal on Saturday, having a sleepover, taking him to the movies, the beach and pools. “Until last year, when I came on-board, I don’t think Mykal had ever been in the sea just because I don’t think there had been a support worker capable of it. It is very physically demanding task.”

Dave says Mykal has changed his outlook on life. “It’s the toughest

job I’ve ever done. For the first three months I found it hard to have lunch.

Because Mykal physically relies on you for everything so he sits and watches me eat lunch. You feel quite bad.

“Nowadays it’s fine – and it helps me appreciate how blessed I am in life.”

Dave says some days he can’t help but smile at the things Mykal says.

“Others you feel the impact of the quality of life he’s got ahead of him. It breaks your heart a wee bit that he can’t do the simplest of things.”

But one thing Mykal loves is Lego.

He can talk and direct Dave on what to build and where.

“He can move his hands and shuffle through the Lego box but cannot build things. How much better can I be? Part 2 I had a call from a reader that left me speechless. He is 83 and is now good health. Only two years ago he was morbidly obese, diabetic and on several medications.

At 81 he chose to make major changes to his diet.

His weight dropped from 180kg to 90kg and is still falling. His blood sugar has improved so much his doctor has stopped all medications. He is no longer diabetic and is living life to the full.

His only issue is accumulating fluid around his ankles during the day. His diet is excellent – based on fish and vegetables.

All we will do is add a supplement to deliver potent antioxidants to improve the structure of his capillaries so less fluid is leaked from capillaries.

We will add antioxidants that help keep the blood thin. These include ActiVin grape seed extract oligomeric proanthocyanidins – known as OPCs – Acai berry antioxidants and glycosides in Ginkgo biloba. Ginkgo is routinely prescribed by doctors in Europe for circulatory problems including memory

loss. These compounds strengthen blood vessel walls and can prevent blood vessels from becoming over-leaky, reducing the amount of fluid that accumulates in the spaces between cells.

This is a common problem and is often accompanied by other cardiovascular problems such as hyper-tension. I try to ensure the diet is rich in antioxidants and nitrates, which help dilate blood vessels important for those with blood pressure problems. I’ve developed a bullet blend recipe high in antioxidants and nitrates that can really help.

Summer safe drinking campaigns roll out Underage drinking, misconceptions of peer drinking norms and secondary supply of alcohol are serious issues affecting Western Bay of Plenty communities.

As a result this summer Tauranga Moana Safe City in conjunction with Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council have launched two campaigns to encourage responsible

and safe drinking behaviour in the Western BOP. ‘What About you?’ is aimed at young people aged 15-17.

The campaign challenges students’ misconceptions of peer drinking norms by highlighting real facts about drinking behaviours that are common among young Kiwis, such as 50 per cent of young Kiwis think getting wasted is unacceptable.

The campaign was developed in collaboration with student focus groups in the Western BOP and encourages less harmful drinking practices and a positive change in drinking behaviour. The core focus is to reduce underage drinking and young people’s access to alcohol by raising awareness of the offence and penalties of supplying alcohol to minors.

A lifeline for Lifeline

Leading counselling service Lifeline has been thrown a lifeline by Presbyterian Support Northern, which has committed 18 months’ operational support while also looking to help solve Lifeline’s long-term funding issues. BaySwim manager Matthew Strange says BaySwim has made the decision to move its lessons from terms to quarters, enabling dedicated time specifically to teaching water skills and safety while not compromising the students’ swimming development sessions.

“This fits perfectly with our position as a leading provider of learn to swim. The combination of swimming development and water skills will prepare our swimmers for allround confidence and ability in the water,” says Matthew.

The first 10 weeks of the quarter will focus on technique development. Swimmers will then take those skills to the water skills and safety classes in the following two weeks.

“We also offer free unlimited access to our community pools to current BaySwim members to enable them to practise the skills learnt any time,” says Matthew.

Water Safety New Zealand recommends learning survival skills to help achieve its zero-drowning goal. Also recommended are learning to swim, wearing and using the right safety equipment, and keeping loved ones – especially young children – close.

Thrills and spills The valleys south of Waihi will echo with screams and roars from about 50 of the best 4X4 motors fighting it out this Saturday, December 10, to win Round 2 of New Zealand’s national trials.

The Bay of Plenty 4x4 Club is hosting its biennial 4x4 National Trial at a Mathers Rd property in Waihi – and spectators are welcome to watch the muddy thrills, spills and engine kills.

The event challenges two-person teams in vehicles ranging from fairly standard Suzuki Jeeps through to

high performance super-modified custom-built trucks against different, short-duration courses called hazards.

At the start of a hazard, the competing team has 100 demerit points. The aim is to get to the other end of the hazard – past four sets of gradient markers – without stopping or running over any course marker pegs to gain the ultimate goal of zero, meaning no demerit points for that hazard.

Competitors are expected to complete 30 hazards in a day – so while attacking the course they have to remember their vehicle must survive the entire day.

Pyes Pa’s Dave Vanderschantz taking on a hazard in his 4X4.

Watch the fun and fury of 4X4s and their engines are coming from as far away as Wellington to north of Auckland to take on local challengers Te Puke-based Nathan Fogden, who is the BOP club’s vice president and lead event organiser, and Pyes Pa’s Dave Vanderschantz.

“It is very much a spectator sport – the machines and teams do crazy climbs, steep sidling driving, rollovers and get into muddy holes.

“And some vehicles have up to 600hp. Some also have rear steering while all of them have side brakes.”

Zane says the action appeals to all ages – “children especially love to see people really doing what they do with their toy cars and trucks in the dirt at home”.

The event is a fundraiser for the

Waihi Scouts, who will be selling food and beverages on-site to fund a trip to the NZ Scout Jamborie this summer.

In the past about 300 people have come to watch the event, with spectators viewing the action from a hillside that they can walk around.

This year the club hopes for 1500.

“We also want to Gary Mathers Contracting, who is letting us wild on his farmland for the day,” says Zane.

The Bay of Plenty 4x4 National Trial Round 2 is on Saturday, December 10, starting about 8am at Mathers Rd, Waihi. Climate change causing a major issue Helping Kiwi communities understand the implications of life in a changing climate will be a major focus for Local Government New Zealand in the coming triennium and beyond.

LGNZ president Lawrence Yule says given its implications for water quantity, infrastructure investment, civil defence

and land use planning, climate change will be a key priority for local government in the years ahead. A climate change position paper for local government will be considered by LGNZ’s new National Council at its first meeting this week.

The position statement aims to demonstrate local government’s commitment to achieving the vision for prosperous communities, and encourage actions that mandate and empower local government to make the most effective contribution to mitigating emissions and adapting to the effects of climate change.

“Councils and their communities will need to consider how rising sea

levels and more frequent storms will impact them and the infrastructure they use,” says Lawrence.

“Most New Zealanders understand the fundamental causes and impacts of climate change, often at a global level, but many remain uninformed about the impacts that climate change could have or are unaware of how the actions of their community can help mitigate emissions.

“Local government has a major role to play in helping us all adapt to climate change. The OECD notes that when faced with climate change impacts communities look to local government.

“Decisions made today about infrastructure, land use and urban

development will deter-mine the extent and impact of climate change, and a community’s vulnerability or resilience.”

To start this conversation LGNZ launched in July the 2050 Challenge discussion document, which highlights major economic, social, cultural and environmental shifts New Zealand will face in the next 35 years, including as a result of climate change.

The climate change position statement seeks to demonstrate local government’s commitment to tackling climate change adaptation, and encourage actions that mandate and em-power local government to make the most effective contribution to mitigating emissions and adapting to the effects of climate change.

Zespri’s new $40M headquarters Zespri has this week unveiled the new-look headquarters it’s planning for the Maunganui Rd site it bought off the Tauranga City ratepayers in December 2015.

Zespri is investing more than $40 million for design, build, fitout, furnishing and landscaping of the new 4800m2 landmark office complex with basement carparking, says Zespri chief financial officer David Hazlehurst.

The former borough council site will be home to a three-story complex standing in a parklike setting and includes onsite parking for about 190 cars, mostly underground, to reduce the traffic impact on the community.

“This development will connect

us with both our local community and the global markets, and includes redeveloping the public park so the community can continue to enjoy this green space in the heart of the Mount,” says David.

“We’ve incorporated some features to make the building more efficient and sustainable, like a smart façade, efficient heating and air conditioning services, and water recycling.

“We’ve also developed flexible working arrangements to allow staff to work in different workspaces when doing different work – this increases productivity and reduces the physical footprint of the building,” says David.

David says Zespri has well and truly outgrown their existing building as the organisation has grown to support the kiwifruit

industry’s rapid progress.

“With global sales expected to more than double to $4.5 billion by 2025, the new building will provide the facilities we need to deliver this growth for the kiwifruit industry.

“We’re excited to show our community and growers something we can all be proud of.”

The architect for the project is Warren & Mahoney and Beca has been appointed as the project manager.

The construction contract will open for tender shortly.

Zespri has been operating from the site since 1996. Work will start on the site in the first quarter of next year, with the building set for completion by the end of 2018.

The old brick Zespri building, constructed in the 1980s, will eventually be demolished and replaced with parkland.

An invitation: Draw near to God I once received an invitation to attend a special birthday party of a close friend. I was delighted; of course I would go and I immediately accepted the invitation by sending an RSVP notice. This made me think of the many invitations we have from God in the Bible.

One of those invitations is in the letter of James – written by Jesus’ halfbrother – where the invitation is stated: “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you (Jas.4:8)”.

You may be wondering: ‘What do I need to do to respond to this personal invitation to come to God and enjoy intimate, personal fellow-ship with the eternal and living God? Where’s the RSVP slip?’

Let me briefly explain. In the Bible, “drawing near to God” is a general expression for the person who sincerely approached God in true humility and repentance, and sorrow, for their sin.

What does that involve? The simple answer is trusting Jesus Christ to forgive you for all your guilt before a holy God. This personal faith response

is your RSVP slip; it says to God: “I draw near to you and have a deep de-sire for a personal relationship with You, through your Son”. Jesus personalised this when He said in John 17:3: “This is eternal life; that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent”.

Psalm 145:18 reassures us: “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth”.

The writer of Hebrews repeats the invitation: “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4:16)”.

Dear friend, will you consider for a moment this personal invitation from God? Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.

The damage they have done lives on The Prime Minister can resign and walk away from the lasting damage he has caused.

But not so for many NZ citizens, who live below the poverty line unable to earn a living wage because wages have not kept pace with the costs of living under his eight-year tenure.

No so for the first-home buyers, who have to find the equivalent of eight to 10 years’ salary to purchase a place to live.

No so for people on waiting lists for specialist and hospital treatments. We may be doing more operations than previously, but the demand has grown.

Rampant immigration has provided the economy with a boost but has resulted in greater pressure on all our services, both social and physical. Auckland has become a place to avoid because of the traffic.

Our safety is compromised both physically and materially. With physical and child abuse shaming our society. Burglaries have a clearance rate of less than 10 per cent. You are less liable to be caught committing a burglary than speeding.

Race relations in this country have deteriorated since

the repeal of the Seabed and Foreshore Act and our late PM’s way of passing the buck to regional councils with race base committees deciding many issues, water, building consents etc.

Our personal privacy has been done away with by changes to law as to what government agencies can do in surveillance of private citizens. And passes this data to other foreign agencies over which we have no control.

Our troops have been deployed training Iraqi troops, who have already undergone 13 years of training by every country coerced by the United States and United Kingdom into getting involved in their major catastrophes.

Our labour laws have changed to suite foreign investors to the detriment of New Zealanders.

Our sovereignty has been secretly negotiated away to multinational corporations under the guise of a trade deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

Yes the PM can walk away, but the damage remains.

Sending the right signals: I’d like to address the matter of

indicating around roundabouts. There are several different variations in Tauranga it seems, but the rules haven’t changed for years. It’s very easy and logical. Turning left - indicate left three seconds before entering the roundabout.

Going straight – don’t indicate. Turning right - indicate right three seconds before entering the roundabout. That’s it! If you’re not sure how to indicate off roundabouts then don’t worry about it. But if we all start indicating correctly as we enter roundabouts everyone will get to where they want to be faster and less frazzled, and don’t we all want that?

Proposed cycle bridge very expensive meetings in Omokoroa where details of the planned cycleway between here and Tauranga were announced and later updated.

The senior council staff member who made the announcement with great enthusiasm described the intended grandiose design of the bridge, and stated it would cost about $4 million.

He also stated the bridge would be illuminated at night and motorists driving over the traffic bridge would see this and immediately want to use the cycleway.

Re: Fireworks.

I’ve written many letters over the years to newspapers and Parliament wondering when someone will see sense and stop this dangerous fiasco? As I’ve pointed out many times, the majority of New Zealanders want the sale of fireworks banned and have public displays only, and the Government’s response has always been that they have no intention of changing anything to do with the sale of fireworks.

There have been numerous petitions to Parliament calling for a ban, which they choose to ignore. Are you able to suggest

what we could possibly do to take this matter further and to try and make the Government sit up and listen? Should we start a drive in the Bay of Plenty area and be the first sensible area in New Zealand to have our own ban?

I would love to see The Warehouse and supermarkets in our region refuse the sell them – that would be a wonderful start. I had fireworks going off around me every night from the date they went on sale until November 22, and now spasmodically – far worse than it ever was in Auckland.

Why not attach the cycleway crossing to the existing Wairoa traffic bridge providing this bridge is structurally suitable to do this.

Very much cheaper and no impact on the landscape or environment.

A new four-lane bridge is to be constructed as part of the Tauranga Northern Link but this would appear to be located much further up the river to be a viable option.

No doubt the $6.5m price tag will increase should the proposed cycle bridge be built.

How right The Weekend Sun editor Brian Rogers is regarding the banning of the sale of fireworks to nonauthorised personnel. Great fun indeed to set someone’s house on fire.

Here in Benmore Crescent at The Lakes some moron thought it was great to set off their collection at midnight when most young kids would have retired for the night. Australia has the right answer once again. Sale banned unless you are an authorised display provider. Time the Government got its finger out and made the right decision for once.

Little actor inspires sponsorship A budding Tauranga thespian’s passion for ‘The Bard of Avon’ has proved the catalyst for ACG Tauranga sponsoring the Summer Shakespeare Tauranga’s annual show.

SST founders Pascal and Nadine Tibbits’ son, ACG Tauranga student Elijah, inspired the idea of approaching the school for support.

The 11-year-old is an all-rounder but, as expected, shows a particular flair in the performing arts and drama department.

He’s also appearing in ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ on January 19-29 alongside dad Pascal and mum Nadine. “He’s incredibly bright and loves being on stage, not to mention he takes direction well – helpful for me in the director’s chair,” says Pascal.

ACG Tauranga principal Shawn Hutchinson, who is a passionate supporter of the arts scene in the region, says it’s an honour to be approached and to be involved in the success of this event.

“The arts contribute to the development of a thriving and culturally-rich region, and it’s important to nurture this aspect of our society.

“Arts foster creativity, enrich people’s lives and provide new education avenues for all ages,” says Shawn. “I’m only too happy to put our support behind this venture.”

‘One Man, Two Guvnors’ If I had only four words to describe 16th Ave Theatre’s latest and final show of 2016 they’d be: ‘rapaciously rollicking ribald romp’.

The Tauranga theatre company proudly presents ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’, which opened this week and is onstage until December 10.

Directed by Sarah Oemcke, it follows the permanently ravenous Francis Henshall who finds himself employed for both a gangster and a criminal in hiding, and to prevent being discovered Francis goes to great lengths to keep his two guvnors apart.

This is fabulous and funny show full of chaotic cockney energy, magical musical moments, some fantastic tearing down of the fourth wall, and is peppered with many witty one liners and gags that have you laughing from when the curtains open until they close.

Matt Glover’s performance as Francis Henshall is hugely enjoyable with his affable presence, mischievous grin, talent for the slapstick and fantastic timing. He’s also great for a song or three, and who knew he played the xylophone?

Matt shares some brilliant scenes with the two guvnors played by the always-funny Liam Hagan as Stanley Stubbers, who also doubles as the show’s musical director, and the delightfully monozygotic Jaine Kirtley as Rachel Crabbe, who are strong,

CDs. With the drop in physical shops, bands’ websites are always a good option, and you can always ask to have them signed, making a Christmas pressie that bit more special.

This week’s albums are both ‘Greatest Hits’ sets of a sort, though neither band has had “hits” per se. Both also contain a generous scattering of previously unreleased songs.

Going in chronological order, in April Kokomo released a limited edition two-CD boxed set. This missed out on a review at the time so I’ve passed it on to guest reviewer Tony Moon to rectify the omission.

While this is pretty much “back catalogue”, albeit spiced with a number of alternative mixes as well as 10 recordings new to CD, the selections presented here tell every bit as much a story as a whole as they so eloquently do individually.

If you’re already a fan – both of the blues as well as Kokomo’s well-informed, skilled and respectful take on a large range of the genre’s stylings – this is as good and enjoyable a representation of the band and their blues as you’re ever likely to come across. If you’ve yet to sample the multitude of musical delights they have created during the last two-and-a-half decades, I promise, you could not ask for a better introduction.

Batten down the hatches

As stated on the cover of this two-CD set, this is ‘Batten Down The Hatches - A Kokomo Collection’, a celebration of 25 years of musical creativity.

I have to admit my initial reaction was one of scepticism. The vast majority of “collections” I’ve encountered have amounted to little more than corporate-driven revenue maximisation, designed to wring every last cent out of an artist or band’s back catalogue. Useful as a convenient source library of tracks to be peppered through a playlist, but not that enthralling –or for that matter even engaging – as a stand-alone collection of works.

Two-and-a-half hours later. Yup…two CDs yielding a grand total of 150 minutes – and those rather jaundiced and cynical preconceptions?

Baked in a humble pie, placed before me, ready for the eating.

Here we have one of those rarest of all things: a compilation box set that considerately and artfully presents the working life, thus far, of Kokomo Batten Down a band of passionate and dedicated musicians and Brillcream cover.

Brillcream revisited

Subtitled ‘The Cream of Brilleaux’, this 16-track compilation was assembled when the band toured the United Kingdom in June. It must have been no easy task picking favourites from the Brilleaux catalogue but this is a good selection, from the early likes of ‘Beer Goggles’ through the unusual dancefloor experiment of ‘POD’, featuring the outstanding singing of local chanteuse Jessie Matthews, to a couple of tracks from last year’s ‘Pictures of the Queen’.

Fans will be particularly pleased by the inclusion of six previously unreleased songs: two live tracks recorded at last year’s Jazz Festival, two classic covers, and two brand new songs; notable is the striking ‘Two To Tango’ which, with the addition of Sonia Bullot’s trumpet, genuinely charts that most unusual of places, where R&B meets tango. Also a high point is the band’s new take on ‘Tobacco Road’, potentially slightly hoary territory but here played with such freshness and power that it just about tears up your speakers.

Singing the carols of Christmas

‘Away in a Manger’, ‘Silent Night’, ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ – all of your favourite Christmas carols will be heard from the Edgewater Fan on December 11, as part of this year’s Carols on the Waterfront.

Starting 5.40pm, the Christmas story will come to life when Mary and Joseph make their way from No.1 The Strand to the Edgewater Fan with a donkey. The free, family-fun event will finish with carol singing at the Edgewater Fan at 6pm.

Children are invited to dress up as shepherds or angels and follow Mary and Joseph with a donkey on their walk.

“The event is a chance for people of all faiths and no faith to come and hear the Christian story behind Christmas,” says event organiser Dale Williamson.

“The free event will be fun for the whole family and offers a chance to sing Christmas carols on the waterfront together.”

Dale says the Salvation Army and Inachord Chorus will be leading the carols.

The winners of a colouring competition, with fantastic prizes for both adult and children entrants, will be announced at the Carols on the Waterfront event.

Music and theatre galore at Mauao PAC An extravaganza of music and theatre will be up for grabs for free down at Mauao Performing Arts Centre this Sunday.

The community is invited to come along and support the next generation of Bay performers at the centre’s End of Year Student Concert at its Totara Street performance venue on Sunday, December 11, from 4pm.

MauaoPAC director Ross Shilling says their music and drama students have all been working hard polishing their skills, honing their crafts and perfecting their arts in the lead-up to the concert.

“We host concerts at the end of each term, but this is the big one for our students; it’s what they’ve been working towards all year so they’re all really excited to hit the stage and all

the tutors are too. “The aim of our tuition at MauaoPAC is to give our students the skills and confidence to get up on stage, get out in the public, perform, and have fun while they are doing it.”

Hosted by local drummer extraordinaire Nick Ririnui, more than 50 students will light up the same stage that’s hosted the likes of Swamp Thing, Trinity Roots, Katchafire, Hollie Smith, The Phoenix Foundation and more.

The concert starts with a performance from the MauaoPAC Contemporary Choir, which will then be followed by the centre’s drama class students who’ve scripted a piece for the concert.

Then it’ll be the music academy students’ turn and they’ll present performances ranging from solo singers accompanied by guitars, all the way up

to a full rock band with drums, bass and gats.

The students will also be treated to the same kind of performance experience that national and international touring acts experience when they play Totara Street, including the venue’s epic lighting rig and massive sound system.
