New Year’s dishonours list

Celebrating mediocrity, weirdness and quirks of humanity Welcome folks to 2017 and its time to celebrate or lament some of the unmentionable moments of the year past.

RR has painstakingly compiled this list of cockups, embarrassments and generally average performances during the year, in order to celebrate the true spirit of human endeavour and recognise that not all of us can be stars, in fact most of us are in fact just average and comfortable within our own mediocrity. And some are just downright morons.

For every rockstar and glinting-smile do-gooder out there on the New Year’s honours list, there’s ten thousand of us plonkers who are still trying to stitch together a semblance of success based on no talent, bugger-all determination, loose ideals, questionable morals, low standards and the good old Kiwi No.8 wire mentality.

This column celebrates all the rest of us who unspectacularly flunked; some who failed in a blaze of inglorious infamy; and the odd ones who found the No.8 wire simply snapped and took out an eye.

Fellow losers, pat yourselves on the back and reflect on another year well wasted!

And the winners are: Stupidist Birds of the Year: Harry and Sophie the oystercatchers, for deciding to nest on the most crowded beach in NZ, precariously close to the high tide mark.

Nobody Wants Me, Everybody Hates Me, Going Down the Garden to Eat Worms award: Laila Harre, for being elected to nothing by no-one; then finding yet another ailing political party; which both her and the party are desperate enough to align with each other.

Tight Ass of the Year: Grayson Ottaway for spending zilch on election advertising and therefore not making any worthwhile contribution to the editor’s retirement fund.

Worst Bonfire/Barbecue of the Year: The charter boat Peejay out of Whakatane which burnt not only the sausages but the

entire boat to the waterline and then sank. Special mention however to the crew and rescuers who managed to save the 60 people on board. Three were hospitalised. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

Slowest Horse of the Year: Multiple award winners here… Any of the ones I’ve backed, but particular mention to number 9 in race 6 at meeting 2.

Stripper of the Year: The one who attended the infamous Chiefs event and, surprise surprise, someone said or did something inappropriate.

Thanks for Nothing Award: To Guy Fawkes for saddling us with a pointless, dangerous, costly, anti-social ritual which has degenerated into legalised vandalism and urban terrorism, that still is the bane of society several hundred years on. It would not surprise me if he was on board Peejay.

Cinematographer of the Year: The person who was weird enough to stand outside an airport toilet to record the performance of All Black Aaron Smith and his bathroom buddy.

Parents of the Year: Steven Adam’s parents, for deciding 17 kids wasn’t quite enough and they needed another; who just happened to become NZ’s most famous basketballer, currently playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder and in October 2016 signed a four year contract extension worth $100 million.

Cryogenics Award: To Keith Richards, for surviving one of the most severe death toll years in the celebrity world and still looking as fresh as the day he was put in the crisper.

Maritime Mystery Award: To the guy in the little catamaran who disappeared with his six-year-old daughter (at time of printing) the most riveting maritime mystery of the year. Second place for “nice try” goes to the crew who sailed the dodgy looking ketch into a bay on New Year’s Eve, causing parents throughout the

Real Hero Posthumous Award: Dr Donald Henderson who passed away this year. Not a rockstar, celebrity or rich-lister, but the doctor credited with eradicating smallpox; a disease which killed an estimated 500 million people in the 20th Century alone. Makes you question the people we idolise, doesn’t it?

Revenge Attack of the Year: Goes to Scarface the dog who put three of his crackpot family in hospital after they tried to dress him up for the festive season.

The Florida pit bull, whose name and breed should have been a warning, took exception to having a Christmas jumper pulled over his head.

Tasteless Politically Correct Hogwash Award: Goes to the ANZ bank in Matamata which refused service to a 90-year-old gentleman in a tweed hat. Anthony J Delancaster-Swinbank-Slack looked a picture of class: a tweed gentleman’s cap on his head and an English Charles Barker jacket to match, when a teller insisted he took off his hat. The world has gone mad.

Scientific Breakthrough of the Year: To Bishop Commander His Royal Self Appointed Highness Brian Tamaki, for discovering the link between earthquakes and sinners; specifically the seismic spoonbending capabilities of gay people.

Epic Fail of the Year: Goes to the American public for their inability to not find any suitable presidential candidates, but then take it a step further… and elect the worst of the bad options.

High five!

Perseverance Award: To all the RR readers who wade through this nonsense every week, especially the two who make it to the end! Thanks for your support and ideas, it’s great to know you’re all as warped as you look. Bring on 2017!

Lowest number of NY arrests since 2008 Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton.

Traditionally, New Year’s Eve is probably the worst night of the year for Western Bay of Plenty Police.

“The aggression, the disorder, the fighting, the violence,” says Western Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Clifford Paxton.

But this year was quite different. This year, police saw the lowest number of arrests made since 2008, says Clifford. There were 15 arrests made on New Year’s Eve, including one at an R-18 event at ASB Baypark, and 12 made on December 30.

“Of the 15, the majority of arrests were made in Tauranga, which is a reverse of what we’d traditionally see. We usually see more in Mount Maunganui than we would in Tauranga. That just shows the change in the environment.”

Clifford says police are very pleased with partygoers’ behaviour on New Year’s Eve and the lead up to it.

“For New Year’s Eve itself, the reports I got were that people were happy, they were engaging and friendly and it was quite a different tone to what we’ve seen in previous years where we’ve tended to have people who were quite aggressive, often severely intoxicated and obnoxious. That same theme was present right in the lead up to New Year’s Eve as well.”

It’s a different scenario to last year’s story, with people partying at a Tauranga City Council free event.

This year is the first year TCC cancelled the event due to reports of an increase in serious offences, including sexual offending and assaults.

In the past, Clifford says there’s been a select few who were arriving to the Mount for no other reason than to pray on the vulnerable and cause problems.

This year was different. “A lot of it was lower-level stuff: disorderly behaviour, destruction and that sort of stuff. The pleasing thing for us is that we didn’t see the same serious nature of offending that we saw last year around the sexual assaults and people being knocked unconscious to the ground.”

January 2 proved a little more disappointing. Three people were arrested from the Bay Dreams festival at ASB Baypark for intoxication, assault and breach of bail. One person was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle on Maunganui Rd about 2pm.

There were several others who were struck at low speeds and didn’t require hospital attention.

“There was quite a lot of pre-loading going on and that was probably a contributing factor to some people being struck as they were crossing Maunganui Rd.” As we head further into the holiday season, Clifford says this holiday period police have had significant issues around driver behaviour and drink driving.

“There’s been a number of people apprehended for drink driving but also a number of compliant around driver behaviour around inattention, crossing the centerline and speed.

“We always encourage communities to plan their trips, make sure they allow plenty of time, make sure they’re not distracted, wear their seatbelts, don’t exceed the speed limit – and if you’re going to consume alcohol, make sure you’ve got a plan in terms of how Zoe Hunter you’re going to get home safely.”

Bus fares to increase Bus fares on all Bay of Plenty public transport services will rise five per cent from Monday, January 9. The rise will affect Bayhopper Tauranga, Cityride Rotorua and all rural services such as Bayhopper Eastern BOP. The increase equates to around five to 20 cents per trip depending on whether passengers use the Smartride card entitling them to a discounted fare or pay the cash fare price.

Speak up about domestic violence People are being warned to be on the lookout for signs of family violence and to report anything suspicious to Police this festive and holiday season.

Farewell to big ship It was an emotional scene for one cruise ship passenger as the Ovation of the Seas departed Tauranga last month.

As the liner made its way out of Tauranga Harbour on December 27, a number of boats and jet skis were running along-side the vessel, guiding it out.

“It was very emotional for me, I didn’t want to leave beautiful Tauranga but will be back this Christmas,” says passenger Felicity Riches, who hails from South Australia.

Mortar round detonated A loud bang rang out in Welcome Bay on Tuesday. About 7pm, cordons were put in place in Orion Drive as the Defence Force was called in to detonate an old mortar round.

A police spokesperson says people were evacuated from their properties as a precaution.

“The cordon was in place for about half an hour before people were allowed to return to their homes.”

New chicks hatched on beach Two oystercatcher eggs have hatched on Mount Main Beach this week.

The pair of oystercatchers nesting at the Mount, known as Harry and Sophie, made it safely through New Year’s Eve celebrations despite high concerns that their nest and eggs could be trampled on by revellers.

The eggs were roped off by the Department of Conservation and a public sign erected.

Volunteers from the local Western Bay Wildlife Trust placed sandbags around the oystercatcher nest to help protect it from high tides.

Tidying up Tauranga Rubbish bins have been overflowing in Tay St, Pilot Bay and other area in the Mount during the last few days.

A pilot project has been launched by Keep Tauranga Beautiful and Tauranga City Council to help holidaymakers dispose of their waste at tourism hotspots during the festive season.

Six recycling stations, staffed by recycling ambassadors, are in place around Tauranga, with two downtown, on The Mall in Pilot Bay and at Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach.

Sadly family violence escalates during Christmas and January and Bay of Plenty Family Works co-ordinator Heather Beddie says calls to Police and family services increase at this time.

Heather says 70 cases of family violence cases are reported to Police on a weekly basis.

“That’s 70 per cent of women and their respective children that are being hurt in some way under the banner of family violence.

“In New Zealand half of all murders are the result of family violence. Often people do see danger signs, but don’t realise the seriousness of them.”

Heather is encouraging people to be on the lookout for signs of domestic abuse and report anything to Police.

Here are some common danger signs: Stalking is serious. Someone who stalks another person shows they cannot let them go or respect their wish to be left alone.

Threats to kill may lead to murder or attempted murder and need to be taken seriously.

Strangulation – or choking – is an attempt to cut off a person’s air supply, and is attempted murder.

Jealous and possessive behaviour shows domination by one person over another, not love.

Fear – the victim or children are very afraid.

“If you see any of these signs in a relationship or family you know it’s serious and should not be ignored.”

Heather is challenging people to do the following to stop the domestic abuse circle: You can: Challenge the behaviour – but never put your own or others’ safety at risk Offer to support the victim and find out what they need.

Festival of multiple sports in town

What does a gruelling half marathon, a 5km scenic run and a quick 400m dash have in common?

They’re all part of a three-day multisport festival in Mount Maunganui on January 6-8.

The third edition of the Mount Festival of Multisport will transform the iconic beachside location into a sporting hub, with a sports-filled schedule planned across three days.

The 2017 Port of Tauranga Half Marathon headlines the festival, which includes events for people of all ages and abilities such as the Under Armour Mount Run and Jetts Dash for Cash.

Festival director Wendy Boyce is looking to create a festival of events and activities which the public can watch, enjoy or participate in at “one of New Zealand’s most popular holiday destinations”.

“The Mount Festival of Multisport has something for everyone, from the elite fields in the Port of Tauranga Half, to the Under Armour Mount Run and Jetts Dash for Cash; and for those who just want to soak in some sunshine and sport, there is Beach Volleyball on the main beach.”

Another iconic summer sport on the festival programme is the New Zealand Beach Volleyball Champs on Mount Main Beach. There will also be some established community events including The Big Little Markets and the Night Owl Cinema.

Wendy says the 2017 Port of Tauranga Half has assembled NZ’s top long distance triathletes for the men’s and women’s race on Saturday, January 7.

“The event doubles as the NZ long distance championships, with current champion Braden Currie looking to defend his title against a host of

NZ long distance triathlon legends. The women’s field in the 2017 Port of Tauranga Half also includes defending champ Amelia Rose Watkinson, 2011 runner up Anna Cleaver and 2015 third place-getter Julia Grant.

Wendy is delighted with the elite entries at this year’s Port of Tauranga Half saying – “we have more elite entries than last year, and it is great that both our defending champs, Braden Currie and Amelia Rose Watkinson will be on the start line at Pilot Bay this Saturday.”

The Mount Festival of Multisport begins on Friday, January 6, alongside The Street Food Union from 5pm-9pm in Coronation Park.

On Saturday, January 7, the programme features the Port of Tauranga Half Marathon starting at 6.15am, followed by the Under Armour Mount Run, NZ Beach Volleyball Champs and the Jetts Dash for Cash.

Saturday concludes on Mount Drury with the Port of Tauranga Half prizegiving, followed by the Night Owl Cinema screening of ‘Eddie the Eagle’ at 8.30pm.

The Under Armour Mount Run starts and finishes on Pilot Bay and takes in the picturesque Mount Maunganui. The 5km distance takes runners around the base of Mauao, while the 9km event has runners heading around and up the Mount.

Elite and enthusiastic athletes make a 400m dash down Pilot Bay for The Jetts Dash for Cash at 3.30pm.

The NZ Beach Volleyball Championship features NZ’s top players, plus international teams from Japan and Germany.

The tournament is scheduled across the weekend with finals on Sunday afternoon.

This year’s Sikh Parade, hosted

by Gurdwara Sikh Sangat Tauranga, marks 350 years since the birthday of Guru Gobind Singh, and will be held on January 7.

“Last year 5000 people attended the parade,” says Gurudawra Sikh Sangat Tauranga spokesperson Puran Singh.

“This year it will be an even bigger parade because it’s 350 years birthday of Guru Gobind Singh.”

“There will be a Scottish pipe band playing, and Members of Parliament from Auckland attending.”

Guru Gobind Singh was the last of the 10 Gurus, who transformed the Sikh faith.

In 1699 the 10th Guru created the Khalsa, a community of the faithful who wore visible symbols of their faith and trained as warriors.

January 7 marks the birth of Khalsa, or the 10th Guru, and is regarded as a symbolic day equivalent to Christians celebrating Christmas – and the birth of Christ.

Guru Gobind Singh introduced the turban and the salwar kameez that Sikhs wear today.

The street parade is part of a traditional Indian ritual with the crowd marching for a two-hour period, chanting Sikh prayers and hymns while dressed in traditional Indian garb.

Free entertainment, food and drink will be provided.

The parade will leave at 11am from Burrow St, head along 14th Ave, past Fraser St to Tauranga Boys’ College grounds where speeches will be held.

From there it will progress past Memorial Park on 11th Ave, along Fraser St to 13th Ave and back to Rosalie Liddle Crawford Burrow St.

For the young, there’s a section each for those aged under-five, five to nine years old, and 10-16, asking for entries to be crafted and handed in with a variety of options.

Think homemade sand saucers for the littlies right through to vegetable or fruit critters for the older children.

While Bay of Plenty residents enjoy a toasty summer, one local charity is calling out for donations of logs to keep those who need it most in our community warm during winter.

One of the Good Neighbour Trust’s community projects is a firewood initiative. Last year Good Neighbour split up more than 200m3 of wood for needy families around Western Bay of Plenty.

“Families come up to our firewood depot referred to us via the 35 agencies we support.

“It costs them $20 for about 2m3 of wood and then they help load and deliver two loads of wood.

“One for others and one for themselves,” says Good Neighbour’s Campbell Hill.

Campbell is calling for donations of logs from the Bay’s forestry community.

“We are trying to get a few donated broken logs each month from the port – but we need more logs for the next firewood initiative.”

With this processor, Campbell’s aim is to be double the amount of wood Good Neighbour supplied last year this time round “as many families missed out as we ran out of dry wood”.

Locally grown summer berry fruits were among the treats enjoyed by guests attending the launch of the Western Bay Museum’s latest exhibition Summer Harvest.

Preserving jars, scales and an early ‘Edmonds Cook Book’ were among essential tools for pioneers preserving fruit and vegetables.

Exhibition celebrates pioneers’ hard work A successful harvest of animal fodder and food for people was vital to early pioneers and bringing in summer’s bounty meant hours and hours of backbreaking work often using very basic handtools.

Those tools and the stories of how they were used feature in the Western Bay Museum’s latest exhibition Summer Harvest, which runs until March 2017.

Museum manager and curator Paula Gaelic says not many museums regularly change their exhibitions but the Western Bay Museum will stage a new one every three months, featuring topical and informative themes.

The new exhibits feature

alongside the permanent exhibition Taonga Maori – which is a collection of stone toki, kete, poi, moa bone and patu pieces.

For the first time the museum has focused on multicultural diversity in the district with the display The Spices of India provided by local business Spice Traders.

Anu Bhardwaj says spices have been a traditional part of Indian cuisine for centuries, but are also used to treat ailments and she’s noticed an increasing interest among Kiwis in not only how to cook with, but also how to use spices medicinally.

The display in the museum includes a range of fresh spices together with traditional Indian silk and handembroidered fabrics.

the main exhibition room and the museum also features an interactive space with an operating telephone exchange, a dairy, replica 1910 coal range and an operating treadle print press.

These hands-on activities are popular with children with 10 schools visiting in the last six weeks to learn butter churning, scone making on the coal range, mowing with a push mower and doing laundry on washboards, all while dressed in period costumes to add a reallife experience.

Clean-up day at estuary

First BA5 for 2017

The Bryans Beach community group is seeking volunteers for its upcoming clean-up day at the Waiotahe estuary.

It needs 25 people to help collect rubbish along the high-tide mark this Sunday, January 8, starting 9.30am.

The initiative continues the first estuary clean-up the group organised in 2014 as part of its efforts to keep the area beautiful.

Volunteers are advised to wear old clothes and bring gumboots and gloves.

Buckle up for 2017 Road rules will go out the window this weekend, when Baypark Family Speedway’s first race meeting of 2017 roars into action.

NEW YEAR’S DAY How to navigate the sales to save time and money With seemingly everything on special at the moment, shoppers need to ask themselves: ‘when is a bargain not a bargain?’.

It can be hard not to get swept up in the post-Christmas, New Year sales, but with a few tips and tricks you can be sure to walk away feeling like your money went to exactly what you needed.

Ongoing learning proving important Classrooms may be closed for 2016, but keeping children switched on to learning is a great way to mentally prepare them for the year ahead in 2017.

ACG Tauranga principal Shawn Hutchinson encourages students to use their school holidays as a time to relax and recuperate, but suggests they also keep mentally active through a variety of activities and experiences during

their break. “I believe that balance is the key to creating well-rounded individuals. Our students have been wholeheartedly committed to learning across all subject areas this year and should take this time to enjoy the sun with family and friends – but that doesn’t mean opportunities for learning stop during this time.

“Holidays are the perfect time to apply school-based learning to real-life situations – be it their skills in problem solving, maths and science, or humanities.

“Learning is a lifelong pursuit – not just in a formal classroom setting, but through a number of opportunities and experiences. I encourage our students to think outside the square to continually expand their mind.”

Education can be found in various forms, including undertaking new adventures and challenges. Stepping out into nature, taking up a new hobby or volunteering with a local charity are all great ways to be physically active and also developing

those crucial learning skills through challenges and social interactions.

Meanwhile, for those who enjoy bookwork during their break, holiday downtime is a great way to work on those reading and writing skills.

Easy and effective ways to achieve this include writing short stories and poems, starting a blog – this is best for older students – or a holiday diary, submitting articles and reviews on local events to a community paper, and reading the online news, current affairs or fiction.

These fundamental skills are particularly important and Shawn advises parents to take an

active role in encouraging students to explore new avenues of learning.

Fluoride bill positive but could go further Water New Zealand says the Government’s new bill giving District Health Boards the responsibility of managing the fluoridation of local public water supplies is a good move but the legislation could go further.

Water NZ chief executive John Pfahlert says fluoride is a public health issue and therefore DHBs, and not local councils, should make decisions around its inclusion in drinking water.

However, John says he’d like to see national policy as well as funding for fluoride in public water supplies, rather than separate decisions by each DHB,

as is currently proposed by the legislation.

“Fluoride offers significant benefits for dental health for the entire population but particularly for children and those who are most economically deprived.

“Therefore, it makes sense that the decision to add fluoride to water should be made at a national level.”

“The Government needs to have the confidence to stand up against the small but vocal minority who have been waging a campaign against fluoride at both local and national level.”

A study presented at the Water NZ Annual Conference this year estimated during more than a 20-year period fluoridation in water saves $1.4 billion from both

reduced dental costs for adults as well as significant savings from the health budget for reduced dental care costs for children.

The report found investment in fluoride saved $9 for every dollar invested.

“Fluoride has proven to be safe, effective and economical, yet only 56 per cent of people on public water supplies receive fluoridated water.

“I look forward to seeing the legislation proceed through Parliament,” says John.

Tauranga man aims for the bullseye!

Tauranga’s John Kelly is mad on darts, and he hopes you will be too after a visit from two of the United Kingdom’s top players this January.

John is among six Kiwi representatives taking on the United Kingdom pros in a summer tour right here in the Bay early next year.

“We’ve got a couple professionals from the UK coming over for some exhibition matches: Jamie Caven, known as ‘Jabba’, and Devon ‘the Spartan’ Petersen,” says John.

Facing off against these champs will be John, along with Mark ‘Cowboy’ McGrath, Craig ‘Dunn & Dusted’ Dunn, Mark ‘Maestro’ Cleaver, Peter ‘Stumpy’ Hunt, and Darren ‘Apocalypse’ Herewini.

The idea is to give New Zealand fans a chance to revel in the excitement they’re used to seeing on television, as well as giving the general public a taste of the darts scene. “It’s going to be tournament fashion, with music, walk-on girls, everything to recreate the

environment of the overseas matches,” says John.

“The scene is growing massively at the moment. It’s a bit like the sevens was, before they stopped the drinking.”

How to give your pooch time-out this summer The summer holidays is the most sociable time of the year for humans – but does your dog love all of the constant attention?

Well, they could be a social butterfly – but they may also want to ditch the partying and socialising at points.

So how do you know when they’ve had enough or need rescuing?

If your dog turns its head away, walks away from the attention, or looks to you while getting attention from someone else, they may be asking for help. While your dog may be friendly and good with people and children most of the time, sometimes it can get too much for them. Even though they appear not to mind being cuddled and petted - or sat on - they are often just trying to be well behaved, despite being extremely uncomfortable. Dog owners are advised to

protect their pet at social functions.

Give them a break from children or excessive excitement, even though they appear not to mind.

Speak to children who may be new to your dog about how they should interact with it, and don’t leave children unattended with a dog.

And here’s some extra advice for dog owners during the holidays. If you’re going away and taking your dog, remember it will be in a less familiar environment and may not behave as you might normally expect.

For the love of boysenberries Craig McNaughton is carrying on a 30-year family tradition of growing boysenberries at Papamoa.

And it’s a tradition that let’s many families – from the Bay and all over New

Zealand – continue their own festive family pastimes. Picking boysenberries together. Craig’s parents Barry and Lyn McNaughton started growing boysenberries on the site – back then 22 acres – in 1986.

“This makes our plants and orchard 30 years old – it’s sort of like an anniversary really.”

Today, and for the last 21 years, Craig’s been growing the same fruit on 2.5 acres of the same site – on the corner of Bell Rd and the Te Puke highway – as a hobby.

So at this time of year, when the crop comes to fruition – he faces long days, picking, harvesting and freezing boysenberries – and opening his gates to the public to pick their own.

But he loves it. He loves seeing families visiting and picking boysenberries from his orchard a traditional family pastime.

“We have heaps of people who travel to come here and pick the berries. They come to the Mount and they just have to come and visit us.

“So it’s a tradition for Aucklanders and people from all over the country.”

His partner Jo Riddington– as does Craig’s mum Lyn – plus other family members help out through the short, sharp boysenberry season – usually from mid-December to mid-January.

And Craig and Jo’s sons Cameron, four, and Jacob, six, are starting to take an interest too.

Craig is actually a full-time builder.

So when the crop’s ready he starts at 6.30am each morning and works until mid-morning, goes to his day-job, and returns to the orchard at night to close up and deal with any frozen packs.

“I’m grateful to my employers Thorne Group Ltd – who I’ve been with for 12 years – because they’ve given me time off to do this hobby. They’re a family business too so they understand where I’m coming from.”

Jo says people who come to pick boysenberries as children now come back with their own children, to carry on the family tradition.

“It’s another generation of families coming through now – and it’s a cool thing to do together.”

Craig says the public probably don’t realise what a high-risk business boysenberry growing is.

“Wind and heavy rain can see a crop be destroyed within days; and there’s always the threat of botrytis, which is mould.

“So we’re always watching the forecast

Craig says it’s up to the public “how hard they pick it” and afterwards it takes a while to get the fruit to ripen again.

“That’s why we close sometimes – because the area and our popularity has also grown so we can get picked out pretty quickly.”

But the taste alone makes them a popular item to be sold from the gate, with excess berries going into freezers to sell as smoothie and jam packs.

“The berry itself is an original boysenberry. The size and how it freezes means it can last in the freezer for up to two years,” says Craig.

So why are boysenberries so popular?

“Well, you don’t get them in many supermarkets because they’re a delicate berry with a high water content and they bleed – so they can’t be moved too often. They’re quite fragile.”

And if you’re finding the berries too sour, Craig says it’s usually down to the picker’s skill level.

“They don’t ripen when they’re picked like strawberries do, so you’ve got to pick the ripe black ones.”

But he sticks with his challenging fruit ‘hobby’ for some very good reasons.

“A lot of happy faces – and it’s probably in my blood from my parents.

“And it is some income but I don’t rely on it.

“And I put the signs out and everyone thinks it’s summer. So the orchard has a festive feel.

“But mainly the public does it for me – I don’t have to be here, but I like Merle Foster to be here.”

Slurping up summer’s produce While we usually crank out the whizzer when daylight saving shows its face, Tauranga’s Lillybeth Melmoth has been slurping the cool food year-round.

Even in winter.

But her efforts have ramped up after winning a blender at a recipe swap breakfast in Tauranga, which aimed to spread the word – including tips and tricks – on how to save food from the bin by consuming it.

Lillybeth has been a smoothie drinker for about seven years.

“I started making shakes using a protein powder and just milk.

“Then it became a little bit more like smoothies, as I started adding fruit and vegetables – that’s how I make them now. I use protein powder and use up fruit and vegetables in my house before I consume fresh stuff.”

And the recipe swap breakfast, delivered locally in November as part of the national Love Food Hate Waste campaign, has refreshed her thinking on how to not waste food.

“I have, in the past, chucked out food because I wasn’t quick enough to get it into the fridge or freezer.

“Or I’d buy things and not store them properly.

“Like I bought a whole bunch of celery and the plan was to use it up in a soup. But I just put it, as it was, into the bottom of the fridge and it wilted.

“So after the discussion I bought celery again. But this time I knew to cut the stems like a bunch of flowers and put them into water to keep it fresher.

“I don’t know if I used it quicker but it didn’t wilt this time – and I was able to use all of it. So it’s about being more conscious of storing things properly too.”

And Lillybeth says that’s her main woe. Storage. At the breakfast, freezer trays were given out.

“I had a whole lot of lemons in my fridge. They’d started on my bench and began looking sad so I put them in the fridge.

“Recently, I whizzed them all up and popped them in the freezer trays. Some I kept as full lemons, so I didn’t skin them because you can eat the rind.

“Some of them I just juiced. So now I have those for my smoothies too.” But does taste come into consuming all of these smoothie concoctions?

“It does. And normally I use almond milk.

“But with tomatoes, for example, I use water as my base instead.”

The other day she had tinned tomatoes – she only needed the tomatoes for a recipe – and would have normally flushed the juice down the kitchen sink.

“This time I put the tomato juice in a smoothie.”

So water, tomatoes, spinach from the freezer, protein powder “then I put in some sweetener like Stevia drops, because they have fruit flavours”.

“So you can make it taste sweeter or different.”

So when things start to wilt at your place, remember Lillybeth’s smoothie-making ways. It might even save you some money on the grocery bill – year-round.

Fridge in two hours

This is the most important thing when it comes to leftovers to ensure they are safe to eat. Make sure the leftovers have cooled then cover them and get them into the fridge within two hours of cooking.

Be smart about servings If you have a family to feed, let everyone serve themselves. This will allow them to only take as much as they think they will eat. Rather than scraping leftovers from people’s plate into the bin, you can store what’s left in the serving dish for another day.

Re: Using roundabouts the right way (The Weekend Sun, December 16, 2016).

Several years ago the rule to indicate off roundabouts was introduced, and as a consequence negotiating roundabouts in Tauranga has become a nightmare.

Kiwis may be tops at many great things in this world but most will agree driving is not one of them. Somehow the message to “indicate off at the last moment” was interpreted by onethird of Tauranga drivers to mean when turning right don’t indicate until actually turning the wheel! Indicators are supposed to be just that – indicators of our intentions. It needs to be undertaken several seconds before the turn or it’s a waste of time. I’m sure N Hall will agree with me there.

But with the confusion that now rules our roundabouts I feel getting back to the basics of indicating on correctly

would be a massive improvement. If that did happen we would know where drivers are exiting. It’s not just a matter of demanding people carry out rules, they have to understand them in order to be able to - and many people don’t understand roundabouts at the moment.

I merely suggest if you don’t know how to indicate off, don’t try. No one wants the wrong signals.

The reason, I fear, we suffer unnecessary delays at intersections is because too many drivers seem to lack proper driving skills. Many don’t seem to improve their skills through practice and need more training.

Good driving doesn’t seem to be important to many people, which is displayed by the lack of logic shown in town at intersections.

And by very unnecessary fatal accidents on our highways.

Meeting needs of small, elitist coterie Re: The Opportunities Party. One cannot deny the various philanthropies of Gareth Morgan but at times his reasoning seems to be overridden by enthusiasm and the need to control.

He studied the Treaty of Waitangi and, without regard for the wording of its three articles, he wrote a book about it.

In a media article he suggested that another House, comprised of Maori, be added to Parliament to look after their special needs. Australia, Canada and Great Britain, he said, had a second House but it is doubtful the Australian Senate is filled with Aboriginals, Canada’s Senate with First Nation People

or the House of Lords have no Anglo-Saxons at all.

If his proposed Opportunities Party gains any traction in Parliament one may assume much of its time will be directed towards meeting the special needs of that small, elitist coterie of Treaty revisionists.

They constitute but a small number of the 14 per cent of Maori in the population - but the average Maori gains no benefit at all from the settlements they have gained.

Accountability by them seems not required and their businesses remain untaxed.

Unjustified enrichment/‘gong’ fever With the festive season ‘gongs’ dished out once again, it’s pertinent to reflect on one of the few things that the Labour Government of 2000 got absolutely right – namely the abolition of knighthoods and damehoods being lavished on the rich and famous.

Re: Roger’s Rabbits and the early Romans. Your article on page 2 printed Friday, December 30, 2016, is correct when it says that Jesus was born around September, not December. However, you did the Romans of that period a disservice by implying that they just arbitrarily moved the celebration of the birth to December around 300AD. Prior to the birth of Christianity (Jesus), Paganism and other ‘belief systems’ were observed around the world, from time immemorial.

What we now call ‘Christmas’ was in fact their ‘Winter Solstice’; a Pagan holy day celebrating the change in seasons, and the beginning of longer sunshine; i.e. the new sun. To this day, modern Pagans, Witches and Wiccans continue with that.

Around 300AD, the early Christian Church decided to adopt the same time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The motive was to attract Pagans and others (such as those mentioned above) towards Christianity, and so the two ‘celebrations’ were merged.

The Katikati Twilight Concerts 2017 begin on Saturday, January 7, when the dynamic seven-piece band ‘Halo’ opens the summer series. “They’ll be a great opening act for the summer series,” says concerts spokesperson Jenni Wilson. “They pride themselves in delivering a high impact show.”

Halo will be supported by local lads Joe Scarrow and Uliti Uilou from Katikati College. “The boys have been keen on music for a number of years and are really enjoying performing together at college events,” says Jenni. James Ray, who’s described as “one of the hottest young country rock artists around”, will perform on January 28.

The 2016 music honour roll It seems like 2016 was a rotten year for musicians, in terms of not surviving it.

That may or may not be true. There seems to be universal disagreement as to whether last year was worse than usual or whether due to our over-abundance of interconnectedness we just noticed it more.

But it sure seemed worse.

In fact, it seemed like every time you checked the news another cherished name from the musical world had died. Even after Christmas it didn’t stop.

And there were extraordinary coincidences: Keith Emerson and Greg Lake, two thirds of ELP, both died in 2016; Paul Kantner and Signe Toly Andrson, two founder members of Jefferson Airplane, died – on the same day.

I had planned to belatedly berate the year for its awfulness.

But I’ve slowly come around. As musicians all over the world breathe a sigh of relief that it’s finally over I’ve changed my way of thinking to one of gratitude.

God, not humankind, is in control It doesn’t take a prophet to say that 2017 will be a year of uncertainty. ‘The British Medical Journal’, in one of its recent articles, highlighted the fact the fastest growing prescription medicine to be dispensed in the last few years was anti-anxiety medicine.

We are becoming worriers. We are anxious about our life, jobs, families, global climate change and our future. Theologians and psychologists call this a rise of “cosmic anxiety.”

Interestingly, this rise of anxiety in the West has gone hand-in-hand with the rise of secularism.

People, have discarded belief and trust in a benevolent, loving God who is ultimately in control.

They have gasped instead at a world ruled either by chance or solely by human endeavour and powerbrokers.

Little wonder their anxiety about the future has risen to healthdamaging levels.

The election of Donald trump as the new president of the United Sates seems to have ratcheted this uncertainty and anxiety up another notch.

Some are genuinely worried. Perhaps with good reason based on some of the tweets firing off his phone! But who is ultimately in control?

Oh, yes, we are given responsibility to be good stewards of creation but whose story is history anyway?

The Bible makes it clear History is His – God’s – story.

God, not humankind, is in control.

Even the high and mighty are like grasshoppers chirping – tweeting even – in the sun on a summer’s day compared to the power of God. One solution to this epidemic of worry is to recover a trust in the providence of God. This trust can be a personal assurance of God’s care of each of us in Jesus Christ. Do you have it?

Be strong and courageous this New Year There is something special about celebrating New Year. Its like turning a new page and having a new start.

In the Bible there are many people who God called to make a new start.

In some cases he had already called them to a line of service and as time goes on he calls them again and they make a fresh start somewhere else.

One of these was a man called Joshua, who had been the servant to the great leader of more than three million people.

A man called Moses.

When Moses dies, at age 120, God speaks to Joshua and says: “Moses, my servant, is dead; you rise up and lead these people”. And Joshua took this opportunity and led the people into the land that God had promised to them.

It was no easy task. They were difficult people to lead and the country was already inhabited with fighting people.

But with God’s help and piece by piece the country was won for God’s people.

God’s word to Joshua, as recorded in the book of Joshua Chapter 1, was: “Be strong and very courageous and do all I have commanded you”.

And what a good word for a New Year to each of us, who would seek to lead something.

Be strong. Leadership requires strength.

Be courageous. Leadership requires courage.

And do all God commands us to do.

As leadership requires obedience.

I pray that as we start this New Year this will be a fresh start for you.

And God would open doors of opportunity that you can walk through with strength, courage and a desire to do all God commands you to do.
