This is to inform you that Guy Fawkes has been cancelled this year.

This may come as a disappointment to all you pyromaniac arsonist animal terror fanatics, but you’ll soon find something else destructive and pointless to entertain your feeble minds, such as pulling the wings off butterflies or making farty noises with your hand under your armpit.

The rest of the population – reasonablethinking and considerate citizens – have decided the indiscriminate vandalism with fireworks by private individuals and amateurs is banned until further notice.

And don’t hold your breath. This likely to be an ongoing policy.

The decision has been made in lieu of any government in the last few decades having the balls to stand up and do the right thing.

Also, if Mr Fawkes was alive today he’d be the first to call it off, citing several better options other than arson, to get your point across. This week we travelled back in time in the Rogers Rabbits Time Machine to interview Mr Fawkes. He confirmed that there are many better methods to make a political point; including organising a hikoi to Parliament, writing a Letter to the Editor and mounting a clever social media campaign. His message to the year 2016: “Blowing the crapeth out of letterboxes with gunpowder is so 17th Century.”

Not sustainable

Meanwhile, back to today... and it’s clear amateur fireworks have had their time.

And as much as I hate the cliché, spend some “quality” time with your family, whanau, children and pets; play games and read stories; visit some oldies and do a good deed or two.

Give the flaming fireworks the flick.

Injury, destruction, noise pollution and general mayhem from amateur fireworks each year runs into the millions in total cost of repair and rehabilitation, fire-fighting…along with the pain and suffering of victims and torment of pets. Then there’s always a mess, a residue of burnt-out containers, bottles,

cans and litter. It’s not a sustainable activity for anyone the slightest bit concerned about greenhouse gas emissions.

Right-thinking folk have decided to call it off and go watch a proper display at Baypark.

Had the rest of the population shown any sort of responsible attitude towards the annual fire fest, the outcome could have been different. But year-on-year a sector of the community have proven they are well incapable of this.

If any other activity in society caused as much carnage as fireworks stupidity, it would immediately be outlawed, cordoned off, assigned special Police checkpoints and otherwise slapped down.

Other threats to the safety and peace of the nation that have been legislated against or stomped out: Indiscriminate use of guns. Driving drunk. Driving fast. Dangerous geographic features such as glaciers and cliff edges. Wobbly viewing platforms and dodgy decks. Rugby players who beat up people. Bitey dogs. Dog owners who don’t clean up after their mutts. Any other cruelty to animals such as calf ill-treatment and caged hens.

Yet for some reason, until this fireworks cancellation, we’ve put up with numbskulls burning themselves, burning others, blowing up property, setting fire to foliage, furniture and property, waking entire neighbourhoods in the small hours at any given night throughout the year; causing pets distress and livestock to bolt; create false flare sightings, noise, and littering of public spaces and road frontages.

By 2014 ACC had paid out more than $1.5 million for more than 3200 claims.

Last year firefighters responded to twice the number of calls than the previous year. Kids ended up in Starship with serious injuries, an adult severely burned in Kawerau, a rocket went under a house in New Plymouth and set it alight, and nationwide hundreds of emergency calls were made for blazes involving trees, hedges, grass, rubbish bins.

People have lost eyes, limbs, vast areas of skin, and spent untold time tying up essential emergency services and hospital staff and

resources. Here are the Fire Service safety tips, which had they been followed, we may not have needed to cancel Guy Fawkes: • Read the fireworks’ instructions. Be careful to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using them.

• Light your fireworks in a wide-open area.

Keep away from anything that could catch fire.

• Fireworks and alcohol/drugs are a dangerous combination.

• Always let an adult light the fireworks.

• Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy.

• Keep all unlit fireworks in their box or bag until you are ready to light them.

• Leave dud fireworks alone. Trying to relight them is unsafe.

• If you do get burned, hold your burn under running water for 20 minutes.

Think about others • Put away the fireworks after 10.30pm.

• Keep your pets inside on Guy Fawkes Night.

• Point fireworks at the stars, not at your mates.

“Think about others.” Hmm, there’s a piece of advice sadly lacking from many areas of New Zealand society!

RR Tips for a better fireworks night: 1. Soak fireworks in warm water for the day before lighting. They go so much better.

2. Use an LED light to set them off. It saves on greenhouse gas emissions and helps save the planet and halt climate change.

3. Skyrockets. Dig a deep hole. Put them in.

Let off under a bucket of wet sand.

4. Watch your fireworks blindfolded. The increased darkness accentuates the glow.

5. Donate to the SPCA to gain “animal torture credits”. Just like greenhouse gas emissions, it mitigates your burden on the planet!

6. Hold your breath for the duration of your fireworks session. You’ll see more little darting lights as your brain (if it actually functions) shuts down and you’ll expire knowing you contributed to the general betterment of the gene pool. brian@thesun.co.nz

Calling on government’s promise Tauranga Mayor Greg Brownless is calling on the Government to honour its commitment to four-lane 15th Ave and Turret Rd. House prices up ˜° per cent The Tauranga housing market’s popularity continues to rise, with home values in Tauranga City up by 27 per cent year-on-year and 5.9 per cent during the last three months.

The average value in the city is now $651,725.

Western Bay of Plenty home values have risen a considerable 33 per cent during the last year and 10.5 per cent during the last three months alone.

The average value in the WBOP district is now $596,782.

Police name fatal crash victim Police have named the 18-year-old killed in a crash on Te Puke Highway last Friday, October 28. Jasper Lewin Stamme was killed when three vehicles crashed on the highway near Poplar Lane.

The serious crash unit is investigating the crash.

Crime on the rise in the Bay Crime is increasing in the Bay of Plenty, with more people becoming victims of assault, breaking and entering, and thefts.

This follows a nationwide trend, which saw burglaries rise 17.8 per cent in the last year.

In the Bay of Plenty in the year to September 2016, there were 6573 instances of breaking and entering, up 29.9 per cent since the previous year.

There were also 13,368 thefts and related offences, up 7.29 per cent.

In the same period there were 4773 reported assaults, up 11.7 per cent.

Mount surfer wins big Mount surfer Matt Hewitt has claimed the final event of the New Zealand Pro Series in Hawke’s Bay. On Sunday, October 30, he won the Open Men’s Division at the Backdoor BayBash.

Matt finished the final with an 18.13 point heat total to claim the title, but it was a slow start for the NZ representative, which had him “worried” early in the final.

Boat fire at Mayor Island An engine fire on a boat fishing the Tuhua Reef at Mayor Island resulted in Tauranga Volunteer Coastguard’s TECT Rescue boat being dispatched on Monday. The outboard engine on a 7.5m trailer boat was extinguished, without any injury to the people on board, says Tauranga Coastguard training officer Donna Bennett.

The fire burnt out the electrics on the vessel, which had to be towed back to the marina.

Rearranging WBOP’s committees Mayor Garry Webber’s rearranged the committee structure of the Western Bay of Plenty District Council to better align it with his commitment to be open, transparent, responsive to the community and inclusive of the people’s voice.

The new council will have a Community Committee, Long Term Plan and Annual Plan Committee, Operations/Monitoring Committee, Policy Committee and Rural Committee.

“I will certainly be continuing our council’s legacy of working collaboratively with our partners on strategic subregional matters such as growth management, sub-regional relationships and our relationship with tangata whenua,” says Garry.

“We also have major decisions to make regarding infrastructural needs, community development plans and dealing with specific pressure points created by growth across the district.

“We have a lot of work to do – and I have confidence that with the experience of returning councillors and the fresh thinking of the newly-elected members we will be working really hard to meet the needs of our communities.’’

The new committee structure provides a more approachable forum for community leaders and community groups to share their ideas and concerns, says Garry.

He wants people to see a tangible change in the way council operates.

Garry says he’ll be ensuring council delivers on his mandate to have a stronger rural focus, a closer ear on community concerns, a more inclusive leadership style and to work collaboratively in the best interests of the district.

Re-elected Katikati-Waihi Beach Ward

councillor Mike Williams is deputy mayor. The depth of experience Mike has gained during three consecutive terms, his qualification as a commissioner and his knowledge across a range of the district’s strategic issues make him the strongest contender, says Garry.

Mike has served on a diverse range of committees including Operations, Regulatory Hearings, Community as a chair, the Annual Plan and Long Term Plan sub-committee, Finance and Risk, and Policy and Strategy.

He’s a council member on the SmartGrowth Implementation Committee, the Joint Governance Committee of Tauranga City and Western Bay councils; Te Komiti Maori and has served on the community boards of Katikati and Waihi Beach.

The choice of chairs for the committees is based on each individual councillor’s skillset they bring to council and their expertise in relation to their committee’s role. Mike will be addressing specific issues on a ward-by-ward basis to reflect the diversity of the district, says Garry.

The full council structure will be brought to the WBOP council’s first meeting on November 10.

Free Pioneer’s Picnic Free family fun – and lots of laughs – is what’s on offer at Katikati’s first ever Pioneer’s Picnic this Sunday, November 6, from 11am.

Western Bay Museum is inviting people of all ages to get along to Taylors Landing behind Katikati shops – next to Uretara River – to the picnic and take part in some good old-fashioned games.

Activities include wheelbarrow racing, three-legged races, egg and spoon, sack racing and a 50 yard dash.

But none are competitive – Western Bay Museum manager Paula Gaelic says the event is to have fun like the settlers used to in Katikati back in the day.

“Our first exhibition on show at the museum now is themed Fun & Games, which focuses on entertainment, leisure and sporting activities from years gone by, for both adults and children.

“And on our screen in the exhibition gallery we have revolving photographs of Katikati – and picnics were a big grand event.

“And I just thought a free Pioneer’s Picnic off-site is one way of engaging with the community that the museum is about everybody – and it’s set to be a really good, fun, free event.”

Paula says back in the pioneers’ day everyone would dress up in their finest hats and attire for a picnic – and everyone in the region would turn up.

“For our event dressing up old style is optional – but really all people have to do is turn up, bring a picnic, and have some fun.”

Without naming committee chairs, there may be hints of who gets what from Tauranga Mayor Greg Brownless’ light-hearted view of councillors’ strengths.

As part of his address, immediately after his swearing in to the city’s top job this week, Greg took a novel way to introduce his colleagues – the 10 elected Tauranga City Councillors – to the new council term. And possibly single out what projects and passions they might get to sink their teeth into.

“If I could wave a magic wand, some of the things based partly on election platforms and partly on whatever, I would encourage each of our councillors to do,” says Greg.

Kelvin Clout: “The councillor with the best election slogan, the latter part of it anyway. ‘Kelvin for Mayor, Clout for council’. Keep an eye on debt so it’s both sustainable and affordable, so both future residents and users pay their share,” says Greg.

Max Mason: “Get the blood pumping into the civic heart and find workable alternative funding so projects can go ahead without unduly burdening ratepayers.

“Keep seeking new business and employment for the city and making sure those benefits do in fact trickle down to low-income earners as well”.

Gail McIntosh: “Ensure the city finances are in order and maintain that fine balance of the community’s ability to pay versus their needs and wants”.

Rick ‘Let’s get Real’ Curach: “Perhaps the most the most hard-tounderstand slogan. Get certain council processes running smoothly and efficiently and control any potential growth in bureaucracy and use

Living the dream “We thought: ‘We’re only in our early 40s’ so it was like: ‘Do it now while we were still young’ and if it didn’t work out we were still young enough to make it back into the market.”

“But nah, we’ll never ever go back.”

Donna and Tony Williamson lived normal lives – Donna was working accounts and Tony was a live linesman. But everything changed about six months ago, when the Tauranga couple sold everything and bought a bus. Now, they travel around the country with their dog Chopper and cat Millie, parking up pretty much wherever they please.

“Yeah we do [consider ourselves gypsies now].”

And they’ll be trucking back to Tauranga this weekend for the gypsy fair, held at Memorial Park on Saturday, November 5 and Sunday, November 6 from 9am-5pm both days to sell their wares.

The wares that fund their travelling: gas, food, supplies.

“Soaps, balms, candles and perfumes. And we hand-make everything. It’s basically paying for our trip around New Zealand, with a little bit of extra that we put away in case we break down or anything like that.”

The couple say the switch from a nine-to-five working life and a house was a bit scary, but they’d never go back.

“Everybody was telling us we were doing the wrong thing and: ‘You guys are crazy’ and all the rest of it, but we’re the kind of people that if we say we’re going do it, we do it,” says Donna.

“We had our own property in Te Puke and our cars and furniture and everything, now we’re debt-free.

“And our house bus is quite big – it’s 10.5 metres long and we have a trailer that we use as my workshop for my soaps and candles and stuff. It’s really scary but it’s well worth it.”

Thousands of stories for sale Te Arahi Bryers got a whiff of a bargain, something of special interest. It was just one book among the countless thousands on offer.

“But just the first three pages. I’m fascinated with NZ history and my history, it’s my thing,” says the Ngapuhi descendant.

After collecting, vetting, cataloguing and pricing every book collected during four months Diane Forrest still had the appetite to read a few. She was introduced to Santa Montefiore.

As other Lions did, Diane would find a gem, take it home and read it and then return it for the sale.

The Tauranga Harbour City Lions annual book fair is at 168 Devonport Rd on Friday, November 11. Friday it’s open from 5pm-9pm and on Saturday, November 12 and Sunday, November 13 from 8am-5pm.

Surf’s up in the Mount this weekend This weekend sees the Bay Boardriders begin the summer series with an opening club day and surf competition at Tay St. The surf club’s open day will run on either Saturday, November 5, or Sunday, November 6, depending on surf conditions, says Bay Boardrider’s president Mike Graham.

Bay Boardriders is affiliated with New Zealand Surfing and has a proud history of producing some of the country’s finest competitive surfers over the years.

“The club day is also a family affair with a sausage sizzle, sounds, prizes for the younger surfers and a swap meet,” says Mike. “And bring your old surf gear down to sell.”

Zealand team and surfing in qualifying competitions around the world.

The opening meet will host divisions for U9 Super Groms, U13, U17, Open, Surf Mums, Vets and Longboards.

Prize money has been donated by On the Way RV for the open divisions to bring out the best competitive surfers in the region.

Entry to the competition is $5 per surfer, and the Bay Boardriders club welcomes new members with free membership in 2016-2017.

Audition done, accepted, now Olivia just has the exam results.

All this on the back of winning New Zealand’s most prestigious senior ballet scholarship, the $5000 Sir John Logan Campbell Major Ballet Award. She beat off 30 contenders.

“It’s a bit of surreal experience for Olivia,” says Kat. “Because it’s such an important award for ballet dancers. And I am very, very, very proud.”

ACG Tauranga expands international curriculum to Year 11 from 2017 From 2017, ACG Tauranga will offer the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum at Year 11 for the first time.

Cambridge IGCSE is the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. With a strong focus on external examinations, it is known for being a robust curriculum, recognised by universities around the world.

For the increasing number of New Zealand students interested in gaining places at prestigious universities abroad, attending a school with an internationally recognised curriculum is an ideal launch pad, according to Principal Shawn Hutchinson.

“Thanks to the increasingly accessible world we live in, overseas tertiary education is not out of grasp if children work hard and are supported.”

For this reason, parents are increasingly starting to think about international alternatives to NCEA such as CIE, he said.

“Parents often ask me about the benefits of it, and I tell them that education is a global market. Transferable qualifications like Cambridge are in demand and instantly recognised. It’s also a system which prepares students to be confident, responsible, reflective, innovative and engaged,” he continued.

ACG Tauranga will offer a strong selection of IGCSE subject options for its Year 11 students next year, and that list will only grow, according to Mr Hutchinson. “We have top-quality teachers offering all the sciences, PE, online Computer Science and a language option,” said Principal Shawn Hutchinson. “These will provide a broad pathway for our students to progress onto university after Year 13, whatever their aspirations.”

As the school enters into its first year with a Year 11 programme, Mr Hutchinson said prospective students would reap many benefits. “We are still a new school and our class sizes are small. Do you know what your teen views online? Or what they upload to the internet? And if they’ve encountered cyberbullying or pornography?

Parents wanting to know how to communicate and educate safe internet use to their youth – and find some comfort and strategies to use – are invited to attend a free event this month.

Tauranga Girls’ College teacher Janet Reddy and Safe Surfer co-founder Rory Birkbeck are inviting parents to ‘Keeping our whanau safe in the digital surf’.

The two free interactive information evenings will talk about the positives and negatives of teen surfing online at Tauranga Girls’ College library on November

7-8 from 7pm-8pm. The pair say the event is focused around having the conversation of how teens use the internet and talking education and strategy to combat issues and negatives situations arising.

“It’s all about getting parents a little bit more savvy and feeling a bit more comfortable and aware of what teenagers are doing online,” says Janet.

Rory, who has co-founded the non-profit social enterprise Safe Surfer with friend Aaron Sinclair, says there’s a big hole when parents look for help with teenage internet use.

“About 12 months ago I refocused my IT career because I did a lot of volunteer work with young people and I could see there was over sexualised behaviour happening at younger ages,” says Rory, who has based Safe Surfer in Tauranga.

“For me the key driver was

around pornography – and so myself and Aaron set up a social enterprise called Safe Surfer about six months ago with our IT skills.

“In about three months with Safe Surfer we’ve taken on about 2500 families from around the world.”

Rory says the purpose of Safe Surfer is giving parents solutions to remove access to pornography from children.

“Technology is moving fast, most children have smartphones and access to high speed internet.”

Safe Surfer blocks harmful websites using tools such as Google SafeSearch and YouTube restrictions. Any computer or device connected to Wi-Fi or broadband is then unable to access inappropriate websites or videos.

‘Keeping our whanau safe in the digital surf’ is a free event at Tauranga Girls’ College on November 7-8 from 7pm-8pm.

A sausage is a lot like life. You get out of it what you put into it. So said American sausage baron Jimmy Ray Dean.

They considered texture, aroma, flavour and the over-riding factor of how much we wanted another bite; everything that is good about a sausage.

There was setback before success for Col’s free-range chicken sausage. Two years ago they got a bronze.

“They gave us a bit of feedback. A couple of minor things. I gave it some thought and tweaked the recipe.”

He won’t share those thoughts because everyone might start doing it.

It’s the old 11 secret herbs and spices syndrome – a trade secret. Fair enough.

“However, I did read up and the chicken thigh makes a much better sausage than the breast. More flavour.”

The crew wasn’t convinced. “They rolled

“We use real chicken, free-range chicken to make a chicken sausage.” And that’s why the Col’s Butchery and Deli at Mount Maunganui has produced the equal best chicken sausage in the land. And probably went within a tenderloin, perhaps even a giblet, of being the Supreme Award winner.

“If you put rubbish into a sausage,” warns the snag maestro. “You are going to get a rubbish sausage.”

Col put goodness into his sausage, freerange chicken and parsley for a bit of colour but not enough to take away from the flavour of the chicken.

His sausage tied for gold with a Mangawhai chicken, lime and lemongrass

Suddenly a free-range chicken sausage with parsley is the snag of choice down Maunganui Rd. And on the back of the success the crew whipped up a triple mix last weekend.

“Seven hundred chicken sausages – and they just lasted the weekend.”

The butcher, who learned his craft in Rotorua, moved across the range in 1985 and opened Col’s Butchery and Deli in December 1995, is not just a one sausage pony. “We got a gold medal for our hams in the New Zealand Bacon and Ham Awards back in July.

Figurehead or the power to lead?

On Monday Greg Brownless was sworn in as Tauranga’s 29th mayor since 1882 and my fellow councillors and I formally took office at the same time.

It is both a humbling and serious responsibility to be empowered to make decisions on behalf of our community of 128,000.

It’s an equally sobering thought that your chosen representatives have responsibility for $3.4 billion in assets, $300m of net debt, and $280m to be spent this year alone on services and infrastructure to keep our city functioning.

Last week I discussed the power your elected representatives have to direct our city – provided they don’t focus on being bickering small-town celebrities.

But does the mayor have any special powers above

councillors or is he just one of 11 votes? In a budget adoption the mayor has just one vote plus a casting vote in the case of a tie. That’s always been the case but in 2012 Parliament acknowledged that too much power had been delegated to council officials since the 1989 reforms and gave stronger powers to mayors in 2012.

The mayor has power to appoint a deputy – congratulations to Kelvin Clout for a second term – and committee chairs. But the real ability to shape our city comes from the mayor’s ability to lead the development of council’s budget rather than react to a staff-generated one. Former Mayor Stuart Crosby chose not to exercise this power during his last term.

To get on top of rates rising faster than inflation we need mayor Greg Brownless to step up and present a “zero-based budget” to his councillors.

Memoirs of our Minuteman “Can I have that fast?”

That’s the most common question Steve Edser hears in his job.

And mostly, the customers aren’t joking. That’s where the Minuteman name and concept came from.

Steve is Tauranga’s Minuteman – and he’s been repairing our shoes, engraving our trophies, cutting our keys and providing us with security alarm services for 32 years.

“I started at age 15, wrapping shoes after they’d been repaired,” says Steve, who is the third generation of his family to offer the Minuteman-type service.

You see Steve’s grandfather Herbert Edser started in Wellington as Edser Shoe Repairs, which run by him and then his two sons.

“Herbert was a blacksmith until cars came along and ruined his business, so he started a shoe repair, locksmith and engraving business all in one,” says Steve. But it was his father Don Edser, who left Wellington for the Bay 36 years ago “chasing the sun as Wellingtonians do” and started a Minuteman in the old Regent picture theatre building in Spring St. “Our first Tauranga store was just shoe repairs then came the key cutting, then the engraving since Bayfair opened.”

Today Steve and Jenny Edser have the Spring St store, two shops on Cameron Rd and an outlet in Bayfair.

“We moved from Spring St to Willow St 25 years ago. Steve opened a tiny shop at Greerton 21 years ago.

And we bought out a competitor at Bayfair 16 years ago. And 633 Cameron Rd was opened five years ago

The pair say the thing they love most about their jobs is the variety of work and meeting new people.

“And our great staff are our success – seven out of 10 have done more than 10 years with us and one has done 20 years.”

Steve says Minuteman also offer a mobile locksmith service, burglar alarm systems and security safes for the home and office, and sell trophies, medals, silver cups and other giftware for special occasions.

Steve and Jenny are planning a nationwide rollout soon, but do not plan to franchise the business.

“We want to keep it personal.”

A rugby-themed occasion for charity Bay of Plenty families are encouraged to get along to a rugby-themed afternoon at a new car sales business in Mount Maunganui, which is linking up with a local charity.

When Near New Cars on Hewletts Rd at Mount Maunganui opened recently it automatically went looking for a charity it wants to support.

Homes of Hope – which provides foster care to abused or neglected Kiwi

children or young people – suited them down to a tee.

More than 6000 NZ children are in foster care due to serious neglect or abuse and, despite best intentions, they are often separated from their brothers and sisters and can change families up to three times per year, according to the charity. Near New Cars sales manager Mike Morgan knows this fi rst-hand.

“From a personal point of view, my wife Mindy and I have done respite care and fostered children before.

“So we know first-hand the impact an organisation like Homes of Hope can have,” says Mike, who also says Near New Cars owners Grant and Cherie McQuoid have taken care of kids in need before too.

So Mike, Grant and Cherie are bringing a rugby-themed afternoon to the Bay on November 12 from 10am-12 noon in support of Homes of Hope.

Mike says there will be some rugby personalities and silverware present – which they are keeping under wraps as a surprise – and a big ticket item.

“The big ticket item is an All Blacks training uniform – both trackpants and a shirt – signed by the entire All Blacks’ 2015 Rugby World Cup team, which will be on offer in a silent auction on-site in support of Homes of Hope.

“Homes of Hope will also have some Christmas cards and money boxes on sale as fundraisers and the local Lions club will be behind a sausage sizzle.”

Mike says the event came to fruition thanks to Grant.

“He’s an ex-professional rugby player and has played for Bay of Plenty

Steamers, Waikato Chiefs and a little bit for the national sevens team,” says Mike. He is expecting families to come along for some rugby-themed fun – as well as a few rugby-mad blokes.

Now he’s just a couple of well struck nails from being the best apprentice builder in the land.

Ethan Inglis is a regional finalist in the Registered Master Builders Carters 2016 Apprentice of the Year competition.

Tonight Ethan is in Auckland competing with nine other regional finalists for the title of Registered Master Builders Carters 2016 Apprentice of the Year.

“I am pretty excited,” says the young Tauranga chippy. “And quietly confident. You have to be to deal with the nerves.”

First Ethan will be grilled for 45 minutes about his building and product knowledge. Then he faces a carpentry challenge – building a child’s playhouse.

After tossing around his employment options Ethan came back to building.

“I needed a job,” says Ethan. “I had a mate who was a builder and he organised me a trial.” The rest is history and he still has the same boss with the same company, Skilled Building Solutions.

And far from being just another young builder, he’s on the brink of being one of the best.

To get to the national final the 22-yearold first won the Bay of Plenty Central Plateau Apprentice of the Year. The judge’s citation said Ethan was an outstanding individual, who showed maturity beyond his years. He was also variously described as confident, a leader by example, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and supportive.

Registered Master Builders chief executive David Kelly says there’s never been a better time to recognise the need for skilled apprentices in the building industry.

“The industry is facing unprecedented demand, yet productivity must not come at the expense of quality.”

Along with the title of Apprentice of the Year, Ethan also stands to win the use of a Ford Ranger ute for a year, a $5000 grant from Carters, and a range of tools and an iPad from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

All 10 finalists will also attend a specially-designed Outward Bound course and the Registered Master Builders House of the Year National Gala on November 26.

Entering the Bay of Plenty’s world of water A lot of exploring and playing in the Bay of Plenty usually has something to do with water.

We’re surrounded by oceans, lakes and rivers – and Sport Bay of Plenty’s Play in the Bay Water Month for November celebrates this.

Whether you’re about to dip your toe in or are already a water baby, there’s something new for everyone to try in November’s activity line-up – for young and old alike.

There are beginner and intermediate sessions of stand-up paddleboarding and waka ama, a new swimming challenge at Memorial Pool, adult ‘learn to swim’ classes at Baywave and Greerton pools, a kids’ ‘learn to snorkel’ programme – and an introduction to BeachKidz at Papamoa Beach. Run by Ange Johnston, BeachKidz is a

programme designed for children aged two-five where they learn basic water safety skills and safe practices through play and fun.

“We do beach activities on the sand and in the water, which allow children to learn new skills and explore the beach environment,” says Ange. “A lot of kids who come to the programme are nervous about going in or near the water, the beach environment is a lot different from a swimming pool; it has so many more elements to it that can change everyday. We help them gain confidence and allow

them to have fun in and around the water at their own pace.”

Beach Kidz runs 10 kids per class and as part of Play in the Bay they are offering special introductory classes for families to have a go on Wednesday, November 16 and 23 at 4pm-4.30pm and Thursdays, November 17 and 24 from 12pm-12.30pm. Use the right track on Mauao If you’re planning to explore Mauao this month make sure you take the right track with two closing during the second week of this month for resurfacing work.

The Waikorire and Oruahine tracks on Mauao will be closed while the Waikorire track is resurfaced ahead of the busy summer season.

With about 1 million people walking Mauao each year, Tauranga City Council advises this work is critical to ensuring the public can enjoy the reserve safely.

The five days of resurfacing are from November 7-11, but is weather dependent and may run into the following week.

The closure will be from the stone steps at the Mount Maunganui Beach entrance up to the summit.

The base track will remain open and unaffected, and the public will still be able to access the Mauao summit from the Pilot Bay entrance, via the 4WD track.

“The council is committed to getting the work done as quickly as possible and will re-open the tracks as soon as it is safe to do so,” says TCC parks and

recreation manager Warren Aitken.

After an assessment of the resurfacing options, TCC identified a heavy-lift helicopter is the most cost-effective way to supply resurfacing materials to the track, and has cut down the closure period considerably.

The Oruahine track will be closed for visitor safety during the helicopter phase of the work as it will fly over that area.

It’s likely the helicopter work will take two-three days, after which the Oruahine track will be reopened.

The closures will be signposted at each of the park entrances and temporary fencing will be in place ahead of restricted areas.

Security staff will be on-site at key locations to ensure people are directed to open tracks.

The work is expected to take five days, weather permitting. The summit will be accessible via the 4WD track.

Simple summer dips anyone?

As spring makes way for a quintessential summer in the Bay, one thing you can’t go past is a cool tasty DIY dip on a hot day.

Yes, munched down with a beverage of choice while the sun goes down over the horizon will satisfy even the most fussiest of palates.

And many dips you can whip up in a few minutes can make for an easy lite lunch or dinner when paired with some good dippers. So here’s my favourite three dips to divulge in this summer.

Get dipping everyone!

Leave for a few minutes for the onion flavour to infuse – or longer in the fridge if taking to a party – then serve. This even makes a great side salad to a barbecue.

Beetroot dip Ingredients: 1 tin beetroot

Avocado dip Ingredients: Avocado Beetroot Onion Mayonnaise Method: Simply combine avocado cubes with finely chopped onion and chopped up beetroot pieces. Add the mayonnaise last and toss.

1 pot of cream cheese Mint or basil leaves Method: Put all ingredients into a food processor and whizz until smooth. With a nice sweet taste this goes well with crackers or toasted bread and a specialty cheese.

Or go au naturel with some celery sticks.

Hummus with spinach and feta Ingredients: One tin of chick peas Feta cheese broken up 2 Tbsp tahini Two blobs of olive oil Spinach leaves from the garden Lemon juice A pinch each of turmeric and smoked paprika A tsp of sea salt Method: Throw all ingredients in a food processor and whizz until it’s a consistency you desire.

Season if needed. Serve with carrot or celery sticks or crusty fresh bread.

Expressing love for home-brewing coffee Bay of Plenty coffee drinkers are more likely to prefer a brew made at home to one bought from a café, according to a survey.

The survey, commissioned by Canstar, also reckons 59 per cent of Bay residents use their coffee machine every day, and 35 per cent use a manual machine.

And those in the Bay are the least likely to get a withdrawal headache when cutting down on coffee consumption, with only six per cent admitting to it.

Plus, only six per cent in the BOP own an

automatic machine that grinds or dispenses coffee at the push of a button.

The nationwide survey of 544 espresso machine owners shows nearly half of Kiwis – about 48 per cent – are using their machine daily, says Canstar general manager New Zealand Jose George.

“It’s very easy to get used to good coffee and once you’ve had a taste of it, it’s hard to give up.

“Luckily, those with home espresso machines aren’t taking their coffee consumption too far; just 12 per cent nationally report withdrawal symptoms when cutting down on the amount of coffee they drink.”

And a little more than 40 per cent of machine owners said they were saving money on café coffees since buying

their machine, says Jose.

“If you’re getting your coffee fix at home, your machine will soon start paying for itself, leading to savings in the long run.”

But when it comes to choosing an espresso machine, it’s useability that counts, says Jose.

“Reliability and ease of use are the two most important drivers of satisfaction, followed by value for money.

“How the machine looks was the least important factor. Kiwis want to know that their machine will produce a great cup of coffee every time and that it isn’t too complicated.

“It’s coffee, not rocket science.”

The survey screened 544 Kiwis who have purchased and used an espresso coffee machine in the last three years.

History of the humble pud Yes, it’s true, the Halloween decorations and candy have been pulled from the shelves and promptly replaced with Christmas paraphernalia.

And more and more Christmas hams and other festive foods are arriving on supermarket shelves daily.

That includes fruit for Christmas pudding.

With ‘Stir-up Sunday’ approaching – an informal term in Anglican churches for the last Sunday before the season of Advent – it’s the perfect time to start thinking about making and maturing your Christmas puds.

Traditionally, Christmas pudding preparation began on Stir-up Sunday, which occurs this year on Sunday, November 20, so the time to start your Christmas pud is nigh.

As most recipes for Christmas pudding call for a maturing period – in which some bakers feed the pudding a tablespoon of alcohol every fortnight to infuse it with the jovial holiday spirit – the last Sunday before Advent typically leaves enough time for the pudding to be sufficiently mature and jolly.

Traditionally, Christmas pudding is a family event – everyone gathers in the kitchen to craft and steam their pudding.

Parents teach their children how to mix the ingredients and everyone takes a turn to churn the mix, taking the time to make a special wish for the year ahead.

And mixing the pudding together takes a lot of effort, so including the whole family shares the workload.

Silver coins were traditionally sterilised by boiling and slipped into the pudding and it was believed that finding a coin was a sign of good luck. In more recent times, however, to reduce the dental bills, tin foilcovered or sterilised coins are placed under each slice of pud.

So as Christmas rapidly approaches – only seven Fridays away now – keep in mind the real reasons and traditions surrounding the season. And get your Christmas puddings ready!

Spotlight on sugar allowing salt to go unchecked The current trend towards eating less sugar may be allowing another ingredient to slip back into our diets at dangerous levels.

The Great Kiwi Cereal Survey recently showed less than two per cent of New Zealanders considered low salt to the be the most important nutritional factor when choosing a breakfast cereal.

Low sugar, however, was rated as the most important consideration by 41 per cent of respondents.

Fostering dogs for the love of it “I just knew there were a lot of dogs out there that needed homes – and I just wanted to be able to help. It was as simple as that really,” says Michelle Broadbent.

The Tauriko mother-of-two – who likes to be called Shelley – has been fostering dogs from Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s animal shelters since February, helping to train and transition them before they get re-homed with new owners.

And of the 101 dogs the council has re-homed since they’ve started the adopt-adog programme in June 2015 – Shelley has fostered 18 of them.

To make matters worse, these days fireworks aren’t confined to a single night but are used throughout summer.

Dogs are very prone to sound fears and phobias, with 40-50 per cent being affected.

What starts out as nervousness or fear, can over time develop into a true phobia.

This is extremely debilitating for pets, upsetting for owners and requires veterinary intervention.

The good news is a lot can be done to help. Ask your neighbours if they will be celebrating with fireworks so you can plan for it. On the known fireworks evenings, walk your dog early and settle them into a room with few windows, blackout curtains and ensure the pets are centrally placed inside the house for greater sound proofing – never use the garage.

Products such as Mutt Muffs and ThunderShirts can help, as can Calmex, Adaptil for dogs and Feliway for cats. Lock catflaps to keep your cat indoors.

Ensure your pets are microchipped and registered, so in a worst-case scenario, you would be reunited with them.

Create a safe haven, a place your pet is normally happy to be in, such as a crate. Cover it and include bedding to allow burrowing underneath. Play music or white noise and have special toys to distract them and only used for these times. Remain calm and present for your pet, provide quiet reassurance but don’t reinforce the anxiety by giving excessive fuss or treats.

Unfortunately, over time fireworks fears worsen and can become very debilitating. If your pet suffers from this, please seek veterinary help early. There are antianxiety medications that will make a huge difference for your pet and desensitisation programmes to teach them not to be frightened. Nobody needs to suffer while others celebrate! Do you have an ‘itis’? – Part 1 Most ongoing health problems involve inflammation. The signs of inflammation are swelling, redness, heat, pain and often a loss of function. In many cases our discomfort comes more from inflammation than the actual disease.

We recently discussed osteoarthritis and found much of the discomfort is from misdirected inflammation rather than the actual cartilage loss.

If you have a health problem that ends with ‘itis’ it is an inflammatory disease. The term arthritis describes various inflammatory joint diseases. Bursitis describes the inflammation of the fluid filled sac, or bursa, in joints. Tendonitis is inflammation of tendons and so on. If you have an ‘itis’ you have unwanted inflammation.

During the last few months I’ve helped hundreds of people with osteoarthritis and most have now less pain and improved mobility. One person I’ve been helping had significant shoulder and neck pain from osteoarthritis. After just three months the neck pain has gone and the shoulders are more comfortable.

As a bonus the restless legs that disturbed her sleep have gone.

Another client I’ve been helping had severe pain from spinal arthritis.

She rated the pain as eight out of 10 and after three months of nutritional therapy now rates it as two out of 10.

Her bonus has been much more energy. Nutritional therapy can also be very effective for reducing inflammation allowing the body to heal.

There are many naturally occurring compounds including antioxidants and some fats that switch inflammation off and bring sanity to inflamed tissue.

Call to reduce unhealthy food promotion The Heart Foundation welcomes the Advertising Standards Authority’s announcement to strengthen the code of advertising to children, but says the new measures don’t go far enough.

While the ASA panel reviewed a range of recommendations, the Heart Foundation believes more proposals could have been adopted to effectively reduce the advertising of unhealthy food and drinks to children. “Any country that is serious about addressing childhood obesity, especially to the level we have here in New Zealand, needs to place advertising to children at the top of its agenda,� says Heart Foundation food and nutrition manager Dave Munro. “We welcome the review and any tightening of the code, but it needs to go further in helping reduce the negative infl uence of powerful marketing and sponsorship.�

Foundation was hoping the United Nation’s definition of a child as being under 18 would be adopted. “Creating healthy education environments is a key focus for the Heart Foundation, so we are disappointed to see the new code still allowing unhealthy food brands to be advertised in high schools, and carried on sports gear. “All environments where children gather should be free from the marketing of unhealthy products,� says Dave.

While he agrees with the increased sponsorship restrictions under the new code, he says this only applies to the depiction of products, and not brands. “This means high profile sports players, teams and events can still be sponsored by brands mostly associated with unhealthy foods and drinks.�

Dave says Kiwi children are the third fattest in the OECD, so he encourages our leading sports teams and sporting role models to consider the products and brands they are promoting to their young fans. “While it is

commendable some changes have been made, it is important all of this is effectively monitored and evaluated. This is crucial to determine what impact the improvements are making to the exposure of unhealthy food advertising to children.�

A good sun protection should include three main ingredients to give good protection and repair.

A broad spectrum chemical and physical block with antioxidants for repair. Because we have ultraviolet rays UV A, B and C we want to protect from UV A and B. At this stage we don’t need to be concerned with UVC. UVA is what we call our aging ray because it is the same wavelength during summer and winter penetrating our skin, whether the sun is shining or not.

Meanwhile, UVB on the other hand is known as our burning ray.

So that is when we see the sun, and feel it on our body, it triggers us to apply sunscreen. Because in summer UVB rays are longer they penetrate our skin, and are shorter in winter.

The aim of the online support and self-management toolkit is to help address a need to help people with diabetes to live well.

online materials in downloadable print or video formats accessible to Diabetes NZ members countrywide, offering them advice and information across three important categories – Food and Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Health and Wellbeing.

The organisation wants to gauge the public’s view on the proposition of taxation on sugar and fat in some foods.

Is it time to consider a resthome?

When residential care is needed for an older person it can be a very stressful time for the family, says Age Concern seminars coordinator Angela Scott.

“Choosing the right facility and understanding the costs involved can be very worrying. The first step is to get an assessment from Support Net, the District Health Board’s assessment unit for people older than 65, to confirm resthome care is the best option.”

A speaker from Support Net will explain how this is done and what you can expect from a resthome at an Age Concern seminar on November 15.

And it is not a particularly easy process to find out if you qualify for a subsidy to pay the resthome cost, says Angela. “So we have

“It is important to choose a facility that suits the person, not just the family. It should be somewhere they feel comfortable, of a suitable size, offering activities, a warm friendly atmosphere, varied meals and where residents are encouraged to retain their individuality and make their own decisions. Dignity and privacy are very important.”

The seminar will also cover allowances available for people still living in their own homes, including the Disability Allowance and Living Alone and Accommodation Allowance.

Standardised plants for spring Spring flowers and plants are a sure sign warmer weather is on its way, and Pacifica Home and Garden Store has plenty of spring flowers to light up the garden this season.

An eclectic offering in a subtropical paradise As festival-goers walk into Mary Jane Barry’s subtropical paradise they’ll lay their eyes on felted pods hanging from palms, water features gurgling away and copper plant-holder creations.

Yes, the Mount Maunganui woman’s urban sanctuary will be anything but normal this month as it becomes a stop on the Bay of Plenty Garden and Art Festival’s Garden and Art Trail from November 17-20.

So why has she curled her love for

subtropical greenfingering together with her passion for felting for the event?

“With my garden being a distance from other stops on the trail I didn’t want to be a bathroom stop or a morning tea spot,” says Mary Jane.

So early this year she sewed up a plan

to show off much more than her garden.

“The garden is about all done,” says Mary Jane, who lives with husband Geoff on Berescourt Place, with her garden backing onto the nearby golf club.

“We renovated the garden about five years – and what is the garden today used to be a driveway.”

Do you know what constitutes a new spud?

It’s been a point of great confusion, a point of great debate. What qualifies as a new potato? What defines a new potato?

After years kicking the issue around, and after extensive industry-wide consultation, Potatoes New Zealand has come up with an unequivocal but simple definition of a new potato.

A new potato is a young potato characterised by soft skin, so delicate it can be easily flicked off with your fingers. If the skin cannot be flicked off, then the potato is not a new potato.

And it’s almost that time of year, when we treat ourselves to a small $10 box of

New potatoes have a delicate flavour and are usually available from the end of winter. They are young potatoes, and unlike their fully grown counterparts, they keep their shape once cooked and cut. They are also

sweeter because their sugar has not yet converted into starch, and are therefore particularly suited to salads.

Choose new potatoes that are firm, dry and blemishfree. Unwashed potatoes last longer as the dirt protects them from bruising and general deterioration.

They say you shouldn’t peel a new potato – but you can use a pot scrub to remove excess skin. Otherwise, just rinse to remove any dirt, and cook whole.

To boil, place potatoes into a pan of lightly salted water, bring to the boil, simmer until tender – about 10 minutes – and drain. Dress new potatoes as soon as they are cooked with lashings of flavour or oil and drizzle with finely chopped mint. Sit back and savour perhaps the noblest of vegetables.

Store new potatoes in a cool, dark, wellventilated place. They should be used within a few days of purchase.

Giving snails and slugs the slip I’ve recently planted summer vegetables in my garden ready for a Christmas harvest.

But there’s there’s some some critters critters keeping me up at night apart from all the weeds I know I’ll have to conquer. They They are called slugs and snails – and I can nearly feel them slipping past my bedroom and into the garden yonder at midnight chewing on my lettuces intended for the festive salad.

Last season I continuously sprinkled pellets over the patch – but the rain washed them away or the birds ate them, or they mysteriously disappeared. But the slugs and snails didn’t.

Here’s an interesting fact – the slug is a hermaphrodite, which means they have both male and female reproductive systems and can mate with themselves. Each slug can produce up to 36 eggs, several times a year.

And, apparently, they reach adulthood in about six weeks and some species have a life span of two-six years.

But the worst thing is they keep growing. And some reach 10 inches!

And even worse – they have an insatiable appetite

and feed mainly at night and can eat double their body weight in a day So how to keep them out of the garden? Well Well I’m I’m told told they they don’t don’t like dry or dusty surfaces. So you could put cinders, coarse sawdust or sand in the vege patch.

And its suggested Epsom salts deter slugs while also stopping your garden from being deficient in magnesium.

Or how about dog or cat hair?

Apparently it deter slugs too – as well the animals in question.

I’ve also been told to try sprinkling crushed egg shells over the garden. The shells feel sharp and unpleasant to them. Coffee is another known repellent.

And the smell of certain plants also deter slugs. Try dotting mint, chives, garlic, geraniums, foxgloves and fennel around the garden.

Putting copper barriers around plants will give slugs and snails a small shock.

Or try leaving a shallow bowl of beer in the garden overnight. You can dispose of slugs and snails in it the next morning. I’m sure there are plenty of other tips and tricks up gardeners’ sleeves. If you have decent one email it to merle@thesun.co.nz Merle Foster

Proposed plan changes to how fresh water from Bay of Plenty rivers, streams and aquifers is allocated are now open for submissions.

The Bay of Plenty Regional council is proposing the changes in the Proposed Plan Change 9 to the Bay of Plenty Regional Water and Land – the Regional Plan.

BOPRC general manager strategy and science Fiona McTavish says the council has some key challenges for managing freshwater in the BOP – economic development, land use and climate change all affect the increasing demands placing pressure on the water in the region.

“This is a key step for us in implementing the National Policy Statement on Freshwater Management of 2014,” says Fiona. “We need to sustainably manage our freshwater resources through addressing our regional problems, which include a lack of limits for groundwater, increase our

knowledge of actual water use versus allocation; and stop unauthorised water takes.”

Council staff met with residents, community groups, iwi and industry representatives during the last 18 months to discuss the existing water allocation limits and changes to permitted takes.

From the feedback, council has proposed conservative interim limits for water in the region, along with enhanced metering and reporting. This data will enhance understanding on how much water is available and how it is currently being used, says Fiona.

“By making a submission on the proposed Plan Change 9 people are helping define how we allocate water in our region, so we can ensure we have enough freshwater for everybody now and for the future.”

Entertaining stories on offer The documentaries ‘The Red Heads’ and ‘Under the Carpet’, that M J Anderson (The Weekend Sun, October 14) claims to provide proof that three or four cultures inhabited New Zealand before the arrival of Maori, in fact do no such thing.

These documentaries are mostly individuals repeating oral history with no scientific credibility at all. These documentaries do not

even make reference to Janet Wilmshurst’s radiocarbon results from 2011 that showed there is no evidence of inhabitants in NZ before Maori arrived. The documentaries also claim red hair in Maori had to come from an ancient pre-Maori tribe in NZ while elsewhere stating Captain Wallace of the British ship The Dolphin in 1767 estimated about 10 per cent of the population

of Tahiti had red hair. Maori migrated to NZ from Tahiti.

Finally, the documentaries claim Chinese Admiral Zheng. He voyaged to NZ in 1421. There is a Zheng He Society in China.

They have no record of Zheng or him coming to NZ. These documentaries simply provide entertaining stories not credible evidence.

Maori do need race-based policies Re: The several letters to the editor regarding Maori.

I feel disappointed when I read this type of rhetoric nonsense because it remind me of the many narrow minded people I share this beautiful nation with, who live in their ivory towers of privileged white spaces, thinking they know what is good for Aotearoa.

Maori need race-based policy because our current policies do not work for Maori. Are we okay with a significant proportion of our community doing so poorly because of the ongoing impacts of colonisation and government policy?

Yes I said the ‘c’ word but until we all get our

heads around the overwhelming evidence that our policies are harming Mzori, we cannot have this farcical utopia so many of us seem to wish for. Maori are unique, their culture is marvellous and we all get to have a share of that as Kiwis. How can we be comfortable knowing the very people who gave us this culture are suffering because of the policies we write and implement? If you want this ‘one nation’, then Maori need to fair as well as non-Maori and that is not happening right now.

Until then Maori need to guide our decisionmaking because our history shows us, we have badly forsaken their needs so far. M Leabourn, Arataki.

Type 2 diabetes is New Zealand’s fastest-growing health crisis. About 1200 people will be diagnosed in November 2016. More than 260,000 people in New Zealand are known to have diabetes, the prevalence having doubled in the last 10 years.

Less than half of those living with diabetes feel they are in control, with a third struggling to eat healthy meals and almost 40 per cent struggling to be motivated and do physical activity. This, of course, impacts hugely on mental health, according to Diabetes New Zealand.

During world diabetes awareness month Diabetes Help Tauranga is encouraging anyone with risk factors or concerns – for example, family history, unhealthy weight, poor food choices, lack of exercise aged 55-plus – to get in touch with their GP or practice nurse for a diabetes check which may save their life.

I’m going to fire off a few of my favourite pyrotechnics before we’re overcome by the wowsers peddling their misery.

I love fireworks. Always have and now my kids love them.

So lock up your animals and let the kids out because this year we’re going to enjoy our crackers just like we did last year, and the year before and for as long as I can remember.

There were days of expectation, enduring the queues at Wah Lee’s as we purchased, counting the crackers over and over again. And then the terminal wait for darkness before we can light up and let off.

The greatest sign of the true God of love Growing old Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is the greatest sign of all of the true God of love.

However, Jesus’ sacrifice may not meet our expectations of God. We would never have imagined God doing such a thing. Perhaps a story about King Solomon’s wisdom will help us understand why Jesus’ crucifixion shows the love of the true God in a very special way.

You might remember the Bible story in 1 Kings 3:16 where two prostitutes sleeping in the same house each had a baby. One awoke to find her baby dead because she had laid on him. She craftily swapped her dead baby with the other woman’s living baby.

An argument over the living baby arose and the women wanted King Solomon to decide who the true mother was.

King Solomon knew how he would handle this sad case. He called for a sword and said: ‘Divide the living child in two, and give half to one, and half to the other’. Of course, the true mother loved her child more deeply than the other woman, and to save her child’s life she immediately urged the King to give the child to the other woman. King Solomon thus immediately discerned who the child’s true mother was.

Just as King Solomon was able to know who the true mother was by her willingness to sacrifice to save her child’s life, we may know who the true God is by His willingness to suffer and sacrifice to save His creation.

The Bible has a very positive view of aging.

There is honour involved in the aging process, because growing old is normally accompanied by increased wisdom and experience. Proverbs 16 verse 31 even says: “Grey hair is a crown of splendour. It is attained by a righteous life”.

However, we must remember aging generally solidifies the attitudes and actions we begin now. People who are grumpy, nasty and difficult now don’t automatically change as they age. To grow old graciously you must start when you are young. Grumpy people now, stay grumpy people when they are old.

Here are some inspiring quotes from people who are making the most of growing old.

“I said if he can do it, I’m gonna try,” said James Arruda, who taught himself to read at 92 and wrote and published a book at 96.

“Every morning when I wake up I say: ‘I’ll never be as young as I am today. Today is the youngest day of the rest of my life. Get up and do something fun’,” wrote Rochelle Ford, who is a 78-year-old metal sculptor.

“We have confused illness with the process of aging, which can be thoroughly healthy. Illness is not a necessary part of aging!,” said Dr Charles Eugster, a 94-year-old world masters rowing champion.

“I used to think 50 was old. I was wrong. Not even close,” said Harriet Anderson, who at 79 was the oldest female to ever finish the Ironman World Championship.

“The secret to staying young and being happy is loving God, loving what you do and loving the person you are with – simple as that,” said Dame Gillian Lynne, who is an 88-year old award-winning choreographer.

Opportunity shop helping charity In the 1980s the Reverend Joyce Crawford started St George’s Centrepoint Opportunity Shop and Drop-In Centre. She considered there was a need for this in the Greerton area.

Blues CD ready to go Mike Garner is back, and he’s got a new CD months to get a Tauranga release only after an international one. That’s not ready to launch!

“Back?” I hear you say. Given that he was playing in town on October 15 and again at the Matua Pub with the Bay City Ramblers last weekend, when did he have time to be ‘away’?

Well, in between those dates, in addition to spending a few inconvenient days in hospital, Mike was flown to Japan along with harp virtuoso Neil Billington to play at the prestigious Live Magic Festival in Tokyo.

It’s a festival that spans two days, with this year’s headliner being the acclaimed American slide guitar player Sonny Landreth, all organised by Peter Barakan, one of Japan’s most influential radio hosts.

Mike and Neil had featured on his show during their second tour of Japan last year, which led to this year’s invite.

But now, next Saturday, November 12, Mike is launching ‘40 Below Blues’ down at Brew Craft Beer Pub on The Strand.
