Welcome to the last Sun of the year, I hope your Christmas went well and you’re all in good shape and attitude for the New Year.

I hate to break it to you, but that Christmas celebration you just completed is based on some incorrect information.

We’d like to call it “breaking news” but after about 1700 years, it probably rates as “old news”. But the fact remains, Jesus was born in September, not December.

It was mentioned in the church columns in the Sun last week. Astute church people of course already know this, but to the great unwashed, this will come as a shocking revelation.

Due to some peculiar arrangements about 300AD, involving the Romans, the actual celebration of the birth date was shifted to December.

So the jolly Romans just rocked in, probably in their sandals (although not with socks underneath and almost certainly not in cardigans), and decided to mess with the holy celebration.

They’ve a long history of meddling with the calendar and it seems Christmas is another victim.

Messed up

Actually, the Romans threw in a couple of extra months while they were trashing the calendar. Up until then, we were well placed for the introduction of the Rogers Decimal Time System, which works well with 10 months in the year.

But no, some toga-toting busy-body emperor just had to screw that up.

Followers of the Rogers Decimal Time System have been lamenting that ever since.

The revelation that Christmas is at the wrong time of year has big implications for Santa and he’s going to have to make some radical changes to his schedules before next year. He will be pretty tetchy about the Romans, I suspect.

There’s not a lot we can really thank the Romans for. Maybe the blinds, Roman

Numerals, the occasional candle, but certainly not the aforementioned sandals.

Maybe we give them credit for a halfway healthy salad, but otherwise all they really did was maraud around in chariots and mess things up.

Nipple freedom

One thing the mad Romans might have supported, had it been invented, is Free The Nipple campaign.

They’ve been known to let one or two slip from the toga on occasions. It must be true, I’ve seen in on TV. This Free the Nipple movement is gaining momentum and a whole lot of people are wanting to get this off their chest: Why the female nipple is considered obscene while the male nipple gets to roam free and unencumbered?

Interesting to note that while many of the protesters were photographed with their ample norks in full public view, some of the protesters chose to continue to suppress their nipple freedom by keeping them covered.

Not very committed to the cause, I say, if you show up to a nipple-freeing protest, and don’t expose yours. What is the point of protesting?

That’s the same as protesting to free Nelson Mandela, but just for the weekend. Come people, your nipples are either in our out. There’s no half measures.

All this Nipple Freedom needs a few words of warning, however. Not all nipples are safe to be liberated, left alone in the world to fend for themselves.

I know someone who doesn’t want to be named, but we’ll call him ‘Brian’, suffered a terrible accident while defrosting a chest freezer. The lid slammed shut at an unexpected time, and even though he was wearing a T-shirt, his nipple was jammed under the lid. It was never the same again.

So take care out there people. Ensure your nipples are ready for the hazards of the world out there, before you go liberating them, willy nilly.

Cow stoush

Speaking of nipples, the bovine variety have been in the news lately. No we are not pulling your tit.

A stoush has broken out between Fonterra and Lewis Road Creamery over labelling of organic milk.

Included in the accusations are that Fonterra used a “similar looking cow”.

Now to be fair, all cows look fairly similar and when portrayed as a silhouette on a milk bottle there’s going to be a bit of cow sameness happening. Unless your cow happens to walk upright wearing a top hat twirling an umbrella while singing: “I’ve got a Lovely bunch of coconuts” your everyday cow is always going to appear just like Daisy the Friesian #1765 unless she’s really worked hard on a particular point of difference.

Make it hard for the ‘crims’

Tauranga Police Senior Sergeant Phil Gillbanks wants residents to make it harder for burglars to steal.

The policeman’s calling on you and I, Joe Blow, the public, to join forces in the battle against opportunistic criminals. Because, he says, the Police can’t do it on their own.

“For me it’s about every individual taking ownership of preventing crime,” says Senior Sergeant Phil Gillbanks of the Tauranga Police. “The public have very high expectations of our Police and rightly so.

“But the Police expect some help in return from the public.

“We can’t do our job without it. It starts with you!”

The Senior Sergeant’s appeal was prompted by the simple theft of a trailer a few months ago.

A tradesman had parked his work trailer with a locked tool compartment in the driveway of his home for the night, as he had done on previous nights. Good street, good neighbourhood, he thought it was safe. “It was sadly naïve,” says Phil. “And he paid for that naivety.”

Next morning the trailer worth $2500 and tools valued at about $4000 were gone.

The policeman says the trailer theft is symptomatic.

“It doesn’t matter how many police officers we have, it’s not going to stop opportunistic offenders seizing an opportunity if they are presented with an opportunity,” says Phil.

of a house, a child’s scooter on the lawn, is such an opportunity.

“It’s the simple common sense things that need to be done, like putting a lock on a trailer; if you have an alarm system in your house then turn it on, when you are leaving your house make sure your windows are fully closed and all the doors are locked.”

What the policeman is telling us is we need to “make it hard for the criminals”. “Don’t leave garage doors up advertising to the world that your property may also look good in someone else’s home.

“Don’t leave packaging curb side announcing what’s new at your address,” says Phil.

This is not a new message, it’s a reminder. Serial numbers – the Police need serial numbers and identifying marks of electronic goods and tools when investigating theft and burglary.

They need something to work with. But we aren’t good at recording them.

“Record full details of your property so, heaven forbid, if your house is burgled or something is stolen from your car, you can accurately report it to the Police and you have a chance of getting your property back.”

A serial number is the unique

identifying feature of the item, and without these being recorded Police have a hard time linking property located to its rightful owners.

You can record your serial numbers and valuable property online at: www.snap.org.nz “If the Police don’t have an accurate description of the property stolen, including serial numbers, how can they prove an item is in fact stolen? And how can they identify those doing the receiving, or the burglars themselves?”

Phil says that in the 23 years he’s been in the Police he can probably only remember just 10 occasions where he has checked a serial number on suspiciously-located property to find that it is in fact stolen. Just 10 occasions among hundreds of searches.

“We search a lot of properties, whether it’s in relation to drug offending or whatever. We’re also searching for electronic items that could be stolen as where there are drugs there is stolen property.

“We check serial numbers because they are the one solid link we have.” But the reality, according to the Policeman, very little stolen property is recovered because of the complacency of the owners themselves. Read the full story at www.theweekendsun.co.nz

Kaimai speed trial looking good The Kaimai Variable Speed Sign trial is beginning to receive awards because of a reduction in accidents on the road, with the two-year trial just over halfway through.

Early results show there have been fewer serious injury crashes and an overall reduction in the total number of crashes.

The weather-activated speed signs, which change to slow traffic in bad weather, have been in operation since September 2015 and have resulted in the New Zealand Transport Agency receiving commendations from Police for their effectiveness. Initial results show speeds are reducing when the signs are on.

High praise for firefighters Firefighters who saved a Maungatapu house from burning to the ground early on December 18 are receiving high praise from a fire risk manager.

Luke Burgess says an electrical fault is believed to be the cause the fire.

“They [firefighters] have done an amazing job. I can’t speak highly enough of the guys who responded to that call,” says the specialist investigator.

The fire destroyed the garage, but structural damage to the house was kept to about 20 per cent.

Pipeline contract awarded Brian Perry Civil, the local arm of Fletcher Construction, has the contract to construct an under harbour pipeline across Tauranga Harbour from Memorial Park to Matapihi.

The contract is the last major work for the $99 million Southern Pipeline project.

The work under the contract provides a pipeline link under the harbour from the Memorial Park Pump Station across to the pipeline section that has been constructed at Matapihi.

The under harbour pipe will be drilled from both ends to a maximum depth of about 40m.

Construction is planned to start in March 2017 and will be completed by December 2017.

Three University students will spend a chunk of this summer examining whether sea lettuce is an environmental nuisance or a valuable resource. And we might have an answer to that longstanding and vexing question by the time we return from the festive holidays.

Sea lettuce festoons the shoreline at this time of year and Priority One and the University of Waikato is using its unwelcome arrival to test ways of encouraging regional innovation. The Summer Marine Innovation Lab will involve university students working on projects that apply science, design thinking and business disciplines to investigate the value or benefit that can potentially be gained from sea lettuce.

The three students will take on different aspects of the sea lettuce, with Suzy Twaddle of the University of Waikato looking at its potential uses.

“I’m testing out whether this can be used to improve soil or plant health, and also its potential as a product for human consumption in a similar style to sauerkraut.”

Eva Lichtenberg-Cloo, from University of Auckland, will

find ways of mapping sea lettuce using Geographic Information System software. “This will help environmental management but also may be useful in supporting any possible commercial uses,” says Eva. Miles Buob, from University of Wisconsin-Madison, is studying bioremediation – or the use of microbes in sea lettuce to clean up contaminated soil and ground water.

“I’m hoping to demonstrate how sea lettuce could improve the quality of water and treat waste.”

The project is under the supervision of Dr Ralf Schlothauer, most recently the chief technology officer at Comvita. “We’re using the tools of science and design thinking to come up with solutions that take this thing that is considered a pest to something that is a source of environmental and economic benefit.”

The project is based at the University of Waikato’s Coastal Marine Station at Sulphur Point.

“The one rule is they [the students] are not are allowed to produce a boring report as their final output,” says Ralf. “We are pushing the team to come up with prototypes, test them and make products from their work that are engaging and useful.

Boil some new season potatoes. Keep them firm.

Wash a little sea lettuce thoroughly and soak for 20

minutes in fresh water.

Warm some butter and add the sea lettuce, season and blitz with a wand or in a blender. Pour it over the potatoes and garnish with more chopped sea lettuce.

Algae monitoring starts in Bay of Plenty lakes and rivers As summer temperatures begin to warm swimming spots, monitoring has begun in the Bay of plenty to help ensure safe recreational water use for all.

Monitoring has started across the BOP district for signs of the potentially toxic algal blooms, which can affect the lakes and rivers.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council is monitoring main lakes and rivers throughout

summer, taking regular samples and checking for signs of blue-green algae, the microorganism that causes the bloom.

If significant blooms are found a health warning will be issued to the public by Toi Te Ora – Public Health Service.

Direct exposure to the blue-green algae can cause health effects such as skin rashes and stomach upsets.

Hayfever and asthma may also be worsened.

With many recreational waters in the area, the sampling points are limited.

Blooms can occur quite quickly in the right

conditions, so Medical Officer of Health Dr Jim Miller it is always safest to check the water before you get in.

“The Bay of Plenty region is a big place with lots of opportunities for using the water.

Look before you leap; if the water looks discoloured, smells unusual, or if there is scum on the surface of lakes or on the beds of rivers, swim or play somewhere else,” says Jim. Laptopping around the world When The Weekend Sun last spoke to Mount Maunganui’s Nathan Buchan, he was about to start a charity fundraising ride 3000km through India.

How was that for him?

The Weekend Sun caught up with Mount Maunganui’s Hannah Martin and Nathan Buchan to see if 2016 was as big for them as Nate’s leap was a year ago. Photo: Bruce Barnard.

“Crazy. Definitely the most crazy experience of my entire life. It was early mornings and late nights every day, and it was much, much harder than I expected. “[It was about] 3000km in less than two-and-a-half weeks – in a tuk tuk.”

Nate says that drive was the most dangerous thing he’s ever done.

“They were the maddest roads I’ve ever seen. We saw a lot of crashes along the way, and although none of us were injured, there were quite a few close calls.

“I’ve never been that close to death in my life, and it happened multiple times while we were there.”

It was all in a good cause though – Nate and his fellow drivers raised $10,000 to split between A Cool Earth and World Teacher Aid, which used their half of the donation to help fund the construction of a new classroom at a local school, and to purchase “a bunch” of school equipment.

Since the January ride, Nate and partner Hannah Martin have covered a lot of ground. From India, NZ, Colombia, the United States, Ecuador, back to Colombia, back to the US, back to NZ for a quick family visit, then cross-country from Los Angeles and to New York City, Mexico for a few months, then back to the US for another road trip, and now back in New Zealand for summer.

Surely, they’re taking a rest after that? What’s on the

agenda for 2017? “A lot more travel,” says Nate, “And a lot of unknown.

“We never plan more than three months ahead, and never commit to staying in one place for longer than a month. And our plans change all the time.”

It requires a certain mindset to live like that, a refreshing one coming from young people in such a consumer-driven society.

“For us, travel isn’t about shopping,” says Hannah, “We live a minimalist lifestyle, so it’s about experiences.” Nate agrees.

“Experience is worth more than material possessions. We’d rather spend our money on doing things and gaining memories. We’d rather jump out of a plane skydiving than buy a souvenir.”

The couple have turned their lifestyle into a brand and a business, or rather, two brands and two businesses. While they travel together, for the most part, they keep their online businesses separate.

“Different markets,” says Nate. “Different followers, different stories.”

Mauao’s sheep and the shepherd Every sheep has a purpose in life. Some are destined to be food, while others provide wool. For the sheep which call Mauao home – they’re lawnmowers.

Tauranga City Council’s Mauao parks asset coordinator Dave Grimmer says Mauao Historic Reserve is a significant archaeological site.

“It contains many significant features such as terraces, pits and shell midden that can be damaged by the root systems of trees and larger vegetation.

“For this reason, large areas of the reserve are kept in grass to protect the significant features and heritage values.”

Keeping the grass short and green also reduces

the risk of fire. And there are three reasons for uses sheep as lawnmowers. “They’re preferable over cattle in this location due to their smaller hoof prints and the lower impact of pugging and tracking on the landscape.”

Sheep are safer in such a busy visitor site than cattle, and are able to “mow” steep and difficult terrain areas human contractors wouldn’t be able to reach with machine mowers. “Historically, Romney sheep were grazed here, but they’ve been bred with Perendale and Suffolk Rams to increase the hardiness of the flock.

The black-faced lambs come from the Suffolk Ram,” says Dave. The flock produces about 100 lambs, including many twins, annually from August to October. If you see lambs on Mauao, Dave asks you to keep your distance.

“This ensures they don’t separate from their mums.”

And Ian Parkes knows a thing or two about the sheep – he’s been looking after the Mauao flock for 27 years.

Currently numbering 112, it’s a level Ian keeps constant by keeping about 25 lambs each year, and selling off 25 “of the old girls”, along with the excess lambs.

He rounds them up twice-yearly for shearing, and has finished this season’s task in September.

“It’s a little early to be shearing ewes, but it needs to be done before there are too many people around. It’s easier to round them up and get on with it now,” says Ian. Shearing is done on Mauao in a little shed above the hot pools.

“It takes a couple of days – you can’t start too early in the morning because you have to wait for the dew to lift, and the sheep to be dry.” Ian drenches them at the same time, and crutches lambs.

The man who mows the lawns It’s one of the vagaries of sport, particularly cricket. The weather.

It can save games, lose games, make games, and destroy games. At a whim. And because even the noble institution of cricket can’t control the elements; it becomes a relevant something that captains, umpires, spectators and grounds men just have to factor in. Live with it.

So no-one was surprised when The Weekend Sun headed out to get a photograph of Jared Carter, manicurist to the Bay Oval, and one of summer’s busiest men, a shower of biblical proportions dumped on the oval to spoil things.

There was no cricket being played. But even if there had been cricket, there would have been no cricket.

Jared – modest cricketer but legendary turf manager – that’s a groundsman in the old currency, but a learned, studied groundsman.

“I played Hawke Cup for Nelson,” says Jared. So moderately accomplished rather than just ‘modest’ – he was a handy offspinner and a reasonable bat.

“But I knew at 17 or 18 that I wasn’t going to make it. I just didn’t have it.”

“Our good fortune,” says Kelvin Jones, general manager of the Bay Oval Trust.

“We are bloody lucky to have him.”

Because while Jared was enjoying modest success on the pitch, he was cultivating a career just off it, doing his turf apprenticeship.

match. “And what better way to spend a day than preparing a cricket wicket and then sitting down and watching a game. A great job? Yeah, I think so!”

Three office colleagues had their own spin on that. “I would rather jam my head in a door,” said one philistine.

“I would rather go to a funeral,” said another philistine. And: “I’d rather spend the day in a dark room.”

But they wouldn’t know silly mid from deep backward square or a popping crease if they slid their bat safely over one.

Anyhow The Weekend Sun decided to chat with Jared because he’s the man at the Bay Oval; the cricketing oasis in the bay. He’s the bloke who preens the oval to picture perfect, the manicurist. He transforms a lawn into a green baize carpet, and when the TV cameras are in town it’s a

global advertisement for Tauranga.

The old style groundsmen have rep – crusty, crotchety old buggers, not to be meddled or messed with types. And don’t walk on their grass. Even when I approached the Bay Oval Trust for a chat with Jared, I was told: “Oh – he probably won’t like that”.

No-one told Jared. He breaks the stereotype – a genial bloke with a deep personal commitment and understanding of his craft, who loves the game and loves sharing stories about that love. And his only concern about engaging with the media was he might swear too much.

He saved one of his two expletives for the Basin Reserve where he once worked.

Snapping up internships Emerging photographers have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at three media companies during a week-long internship thanks to a regional photography exhibition.

The TrustPower Photographic Exhibition invites budding and professional photographers to submit their snaps that showcase people and places in Western Bay of Plenty. A judging panel will select the winning photos to be displayed in a large outdoor photographic exhibition on The Strand, Downtown Tauranga, from January to April 2017.

With more than $10,000 in prizes up for grabs, organisers are hoping to attract some of our best amateur and professional photographers to take part.

“We have cash and travel prizes up for grabs and we are especially excited to announce that UNO. Magazine, The Weekend Sun and Media Works are joining forces

to offer two ‘Creative Media Internships’ for the winners of the Student and Young Photographer sections,” says Downtown Tauranga project manager Sally Cooke.

“These internships will offer two emerging photographers the chance to get some hands-on learning in the three media houses during a week-long internship. That will be an incredibly empowering and potentially game-changing opportunity for the winners.”

All photos must be taken within the WBOP and entrants can choose one of four categories: ‘Our People”, ‘Land and Sea’, ‘Our Heritage’ and ‘Emotion’.

Prizes will be awarded for first and second in the four categories, plus judges will award prizes for a Young Photographers section (18 and under), a Student section (for full or part time students) and a digital section. The supreme winner of the exhibition will win a travel prize to New York, Rome, Paris or London and five night’s accommodation plus a travel feature in UNO. Magazine. There’s also cash prizes up for grabs. TrustPower’s marketing communications and programme manager Carolyn

Schofield says this is very much a community initiative, designed to encourage both professional and amateur photographers to take part. “It’s especially exciting that the competition will provide opportunities for young photographers to be recognised and to share their work with the public.

“The exhibition will be a celebration of what makes Tauranga and the Western Bay a special part of New Zealand – our wonderful environment, our heritage and the people.” Judges include TrustPower’s Carolyn Schofield, UNO. Magazine’s Jenny Rudd, The Weekend Sun’s Claire Rogers, Media Works’ Belinda Francis, Tauranga Art Gallery’s Karl Chitham, BOP Film’s Anton Steel, Tourism BOP’s Kristin Dunne, Tuskany Agency’s Tara Fowler and Paul Bryne from the Tauranga Photographic Society.

Alice McFall spent her childhood holidays enjoying the kids’ area at Mount Drury – now she’s paying it forward by becoming a summer ambassador at her favourite seaside spot.

The 21-year-old was brought up in the Bay – living here since 2004 – and her family has been coming to the Mount to spend holidays for about 45 years.

“We used to come down here as kids and try to get as much free stuff as we could and play the games on offer.

“So I think I need to pay it forward – and look after everybody else now.”

Studying marketing and management in a commerce degree at the University of Otago, Alice is back home for the holidays – and

is one of a team of Tauranga City Council Summer Ambassadors who will be out and about providing information on summer events, activities, safety messages, alcoholfree zones recycling initiatives, competitions and giveaways.

TCC event delivery manager Michaela Blackman says the summer ambassadors will be at the beaches, on the streets and at the local shopping areas.

“They’ll be equipped with the popular summer passports with all the information you need to stay safe in the summer season and to make this summer, your summer.

“They have their home at the My Summer Beach Base – open 10am4pm daily until to January 8 – at the beach side of Mount Drury.

So drop into the Beach Base; find some shade, free drinking water and sunscreen.

“And take the chance to get your summer photo taken.”

Alice says her main duties will be getting the word out about what’s going on, particularly at New Year’s Eve, and keeping the locals and community safe.

“As well as having great time with everyone that’s here and making sure it’s [the Mount] enjoyable for everyone involved.”

And she expects to point out the Bay’s most iconic spots as well as best-kept secrets to holidaymakers and tourists alike.

“For example, I definitely think a lot of people don’t get out to McLaren Falls.

“And there’s lot of markets to go to – and the Hairy Maclary sculptures on The Strand are cool too.”

From family-friendly entertainment with circus performers, live music, pony rides, daily barbecues, and outdoor games, there will be plenty going on at the Beach Base. Merle Foster

Pato and Mitch get things cranking From running small club gigs at former Tauranga nightclub Illuminati, to organising sold-out music festivals at ASB Baypark Stadium – life has full come circle for Pato Alvarez and Mitch Lowe.

The duo and their companies, Pato Entertainment and Audiology, are working together to present the inaugural Mount Park Summer Series at Soper Reserve and the Bay Dreams multi-genre music festival at ASB Baypark Stadium this summer. “We’ve been friends for

about seven years now, and since we met we’ve both shared the same vision,” says Pato.

“It’s crazy, we both have similar goals but went down different paths. Then after six years caught up again, talked about what we wanted to do and decided to work together.”

“I did shows at Pato’s club in 2010; that’s back when we were both doing similar things,” says Mitch. “Then we went completely separate ways as Pato said, so it really has come back full circle for us. I think the fact we went in different directions but are now working together and combining both our passions is why you’re seeing a range of events like the summer series and Bay Dreams.”

The inaugural Mount Park Summer Series at Soper Reserve, which begins with the only New Zealand concert for American hip-hop and R‘n’B superstars Ja Rule, Ashanti and Chingy, is on tonight.

Bay Dreams is up next, with a warm-up party at ASB Baypark Arena on January 1, followed by the sold-out festival at ASB Baypark Stadium on January 2.

by Australian indie-reggae rockers Sticky Fingers who’ve recently announced an indefinite hiatus.

Pato currently lives in the Mount, while Mitch has just recently moved himself and his company here from Sydney, Australia.

For the two promoters the goal is to make the Mount the place to be for concerts and entertainment featuring world class artists.

Needless to say they’ve got big plans for 2017 and beyond.

“Both Mitch and I and our crews combine and work really well.

“We’ve got a really good relationship, which is one of the reason why we’re able to bring to the people such amazing shows,” says Pato.

Put safety first this New Year’s Eve in Tauranga Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty Police are appealing to the region’s residents and visitors to put their own and their families’ and friends’ safety first while celebrating New Year’s Eve in Tauranga – and especially at Mount Maunganui.

Mayor Greg Brownless stresses the safety of residents and visitors comes first. “We want everyone to enjoy New Year’s Eve, but to celebrate it safely,” says Greg.

“We want our communities to understand the changed offerings at Mount Maunganui Main Beach, to make informed decisions and to plan ahead.

“New Year’s Eve is for celebrating, so wherever you are, at home or at a friend’s place, make sure you’re surrounded by people you trust.”

Greg says his council is working closely with WBOP Police to create a safer environment at Mount Maunganui on New Year’s Eve. There will be no entertainment or fireworks at the beach. Both Hopukiore (Mount Drury) and Moturiki (Leisure Island) will be fenced off to protect the natural environment and the beach will be well lit. Between December 26 and January 6 the temporary 24-hoursa-day alcohol-free zone in Mount Maunganui has been extended to Hull Rd and Tweed St. There will be some road closures, parking restrictions and traffic management in place to manage traffic flows throughout the day and evening of New Year’s Eve. Delays are likely, but the intention is to minimise the impact in traffic, while addressing

safety and operational needs.

“We recognise that change takes time and that some changes might not come as easy as we would like them to. For us the safety of our communities comes first. We encourage everyone to take the time to talk to friends and family about their plans on New Year’s Eve. This is the best way to help them stay safe while celebrating.”

Western BOP Police Area Commander Inspector Clifford Paxton emphasises there will be a strong Police presence in the Mount Maunganui area on New Year’s Eve. “We take the safety of our communities seriously and are working diligently with Tauranga City Council and partners to try and ensure the safety of all.”

Picking up speed for the New Year The best Midget car drivers from the United States and Australia will take on New Zealand’s top drivers in Baypark Family Speedway’s final race meeting of the year on December 30.

The International Midget Series and Saloon Speedweek Series concludes the 2016 events at Baypark Family Speedway.

Summer brings some great things to the Bay – sunshine, music, good food and great beaches – but it also brings increased traffic.

While it’s important to stay patient in the traffic, there are a few other travel tips worth knowing if you’re driving during the silly season.

The New Zealand Transport Agency says extra care should be taken when driving in the holiday peak period because people often drive tired and around unfamiliar streets.

Being patient and polite, as well as scheduling regular breaks can help drivers keep their cool.

NZTA recommends planning ahead

where possible is best – check your vehicle has a current Warrant of Fitness and registration to avoid nasty fines, and make sure your vehicle is in proper – and safe –working order before travelling.

If you can plan to avoid high-traffic peak times this would be best, and allowing plenty of time to get to and from destinations can help reduce stress.

Drive to the conditions – and this doesn’t just include weather.

Conditions means the road you’re travelling along, the traffic conditions, a sensible speed, your own alertness, and your vehicle or load. These things all contribute to the conditions you need to be aware of when driving.

And of course, wear your seatbelt.

What’s in a coat of paint?

Cracking under the paint, ‘not a problem, just something to manage’.

It was one of those Austin Powers moments. his observation with the reporter and we make another recce to the gouged Greerton road arrow.

“What the hell’s going on here?”

The Weekend Sun photographer Chris Callinan was standing in the middle of the Greerton shopping centre carpark adjacent to Cameron Rd, taking close-up pictures of the straight ahead arrow.

The curious Callinan was in turn being watched by inquisitive shopkeepers and passersby. When the photographer climbed back in his car, the observers raced to the spot to see what the fuss was about.

But they went back to their customers confused and to their tills disappointed. It seemed like just another white direction arrow on the carriageway.

“But,” says curious Chris Callinan, “what they didn’t see was the white road paint of the arrow was badly cracked and that the road beneath the arrow was seriously gouged”.

What intrigued the photographer even more was the gouging only occurred directly beneath the paint.

The white paint created a template for the gouging and the asphalt immediately outside the template remained pristine.

Chris started noticing this all over town. He shares

Suddenly, I’m intrigued and I too start noticing asphalt disintegrating under white road paint all over town. Wander down the Chapel St footpath by the seawall and take a look for yourself.

This phenomenon was obviously an issue for greater consideration so we go to the Tauranga City Council.

Back comes a succinct five sentence explanation to perhaps the roading conundrum of the back end of 2016.

Road paint shrinks and expands at a different rate to the road surfaced according to Phil Consedine of the Tauranga City Council Network Operations.

“And over time that tension creates cracks in the bitumen.” Phil says it’s not a big problem but is something the council needs to manage.

“Repainting the markings each year helps and we can make direct repairs to the seal if needed.”

And, anyway, most roads are fully resurfaced every 10 years or so. Question asked and answered!

Learn the way of the waves The team at O’Neill Surf Academy is excited to be offering Surfing New Zealand’s Wave Warrior Junior Surfing Programme as a fun and challenging afterschool programme for the kids of Mount Maunganui.

Their programme runs for eight weeks of Term 1 and 2 with two-hour sessions once a week, and has been developed to teach the amazing sport of surfing in a fun and safe manner.

The programme is run by qualified, experienced and fun surf coaches, who are passionate

NEW YEAR’S DAY Be shopping savvy at the New Year sales Holiday shopping can be both fun and frantic.

Fun sifting through the bargains, frantic doing it among crowds of people.

Here are a few ways we came up with to avoid the New Year shopping rush.

Plan ahead

Go early. The crowds only get bigger and patience thins as hours tick by, so rise and shine promptly and get shopping!

Shop locally, instead of in a mall.

There’s usually shorter checkout lines and thinner crowds at

smaller businesses. Go in with a plan. Make a list of what you want to buy before tackling the stores.

This can decrease the amount of time spent wandering the stores and gets you in and out quick.

Don’t take a trolley.

A big trolley can get in the way, so opt for a basket instead.

Leave the kids at home.

Perhaps ask them to write their shopping requests on a list and send Mum or Dad in. It’s faster that way. If you have to take them, ditch the pram.

There’s no way you can manoeuvre it through the aisles jam-packed with people. Chuck them over your

shoulder instead. Or better yet… try online shopping.

Stock up for the year

Be a savvy shopper and protect your pennies by snagging some winter bargains in summer.

Buy winter clothes in January.

While everybody’s shopping for summer dresses and miniskirts, grab yourself a bargain in the winter deals.

This can include raincoats, coats, jeans, pants and maxi skirts.

It’s also a good idea to stock up on all of those winter necessities, including the hot water bottle, heaters, and fluffy socks.

Stores tend to drop the prices to make room for new winter merchandise.

Jewellery is good to buy in February. Two words: Valentine’s Day. Whether you’ve got a special someone in mind to buy for, you’re bound to find a bargain.

Gift card expiry campaign makes impact Kiwi shoppers – including those in the Bay of Plenty – will now receive an unlimited timeframe to spend some of their gift cards after a campaign to stop their expiry dates.

Major retailers Countdown, Kathmandu and Noel Leeming are dropping 12-month expiry dates on their gift cards in response to a Consumer NZ campaign.

Consumer NZ launched its ‘Drop the Dates’ campaign this month, which called on retailers to remove unfair expiry dates on gift cards.

Consumer NZ research found shoppers could be losing $10 million a year on cards that had expired before they could be redeemed.

Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin is welcoming the decision by three retailers to drop their expiry dates.

“It’s a great response from these stores and shows expiry dates can be ditched without causing problems. They’ve set an example that we want others to follow,” says Sue. Plus, Shoe Clinic has extended the expiry date to five years on gift cards bought from its stores. And two other retailers, New World and Toyworld, have extended the expiry dates on their gift cards from 12 to 24 months following Consumer NZ’s campaign.

Sue says the extensions are a positive step but she encourages the stores to go further.

“With Countdown agreeing to drop the dates on its cards, we’d expect to see New World and Pak‘n’Save do the same.” Of 10 major retailers Consumer NZ has approached, three have declined to make any changes to their gift cards. Briscoes, Prezzy Card and Westfield Shopping Centres have said they’ll be retaining their 12-month expiry dates.

“It’s a really disappointing response from these companies.

“We’ll be asking them to reconsider and do the right thing by their customers.”

Briscoes defended its 12-month expiry date, stating its practice was to honour any expired cards presented by customers.

But Sue says if that’s what happened, why didn’t the store just drop the expiry date?

Other retailers approached by Consumer NZ include Ticketek, which provides a six-month expiry date on its gift card, and Paper Plus.

Paper Plus says it’s reviewing its position. Ticketek has yet to respond.

Since the campaign launch, more than 5300 people have registered their support with Consumer NZ for an end to unfair expiry dates on gift cards.

A Consumer NZ survey also found a majority supported change. Shoppers can register their support for change at consumer.org.nz.

Because Kathy is swapping her family car for the battered Suzuki on January 7, when she bashes and crashes her way around the speedway track for the SunLive Baypark Speedway Demolition Derby.

“I’ve named her Stinga,” says Kathy. It relates to her Zodiac sign. “I’m a Scorpio, and so is the boss. It runs in the SunMedia family.”

Although she’s still trying to choreograph a lady-like way of climbing inside the window of the bashed up derby car, Kathy isn’t nervous about getting behind the wheel on the big day.

“I’m not nervous. I’ve got a good feel of what it might be like behind the wheel. When I found out I could go full throttle and there’s no speed restrictions I was like: ‘Yeah! I can’t wait’.

“Although my kids aren’t so keen. They said they don’t want me to get killed. Isn’t that sweet?”

Kathy’s dodged possums and handled the winding corners of the back roads of Welcome Bay and Pyes Pa roads all her life, but this January she’ll be speeding around Baypark Speedway’s terracotta track.

“I’ve never driven on a track before but did grow up driving the local back roads in the days before it was sealed, dodging possums and handling corners,” says the mother-of-two.

Kathy says the daily battle of negotiating Tauranga’s commuter traffic has honed her driving skills, revving up her excitement to take on the derby.

“Driving to work each morning in Tauranga has certainly given me a taste of what it might be like at Baypark Speedway – except on the roads you have to dodge cars and at Baypark I’ll be allowed to hit them – yes!”

Kathy will be driving a car especially prepared for the event

by Baypark Speedway. It will be appropriately modified, fitted with the right safety gear and Kathy will be wearing the correct clothing, footwear and helmet to keep her safe.

The January demoderby is the first of two this season, with the second scheduled for April 15.

The underworld of dating a diver on Tinder A ‘friend’ of mine has recently become single, through no fault of theirs I might add. It’s not their fault they weren’t appreciated for the awesome person they are.

So…they’ve been cruising the ‘date a diver’ section of Tinder. Now I don’t know exactly if there is such as section, I don’t go there myself, I’m happily married after all. Mrs B is the love of my life, she reads all my articles.

Any who, ‘James’ (not his real name) has had a couple of dates out of it, nothing serious yet though he tells me. The last one was interesting.

He met up with this lady at a local restaurant and things were going okay to start with. They were both divers of course.

She’d been diving everywhere apparently. Exotic locations were common place and she sure talked about all of them.

Then she informed him she had forgotten her handbag, a likely story and that he would have to pay for the meal. Just this once mind you.

James, of course, said: ‘No’. He was prepared to go Dutch as it was their first date, but not cover the full amount. She said: ‘Too bad’ and he would have to as their meals had already arrived, so he was stuck. All with a smile, kind of like a female ‘Bruce the shark’, now that I remember it.

So, what to do. Well James is a smart cookie, something apparently lost on his ex, so he came up with a cunning plan, almost weasel-like. He started buying top shelf drinks, lots of them. Not for him of course, he just had a couple. And he ordered the most expensive desert too. And coffee. And another desert. Then he went to the bathroom and climbed out of the window and drove home. No first-dater

was going to do that to him, who on earth did she think she was? Now I don’t condone that type of behaviour.

And I certainly wouldn’t do anything of the sort, but it just highlights the issues facing us single divers; I mean James. How to connect with someone who shares the same passion for the underworld.

Or do you find someone so different that they don’t like diving, if there is such a person, so you can have all the dive time to yourself?

I think what we need here is one of those singles’ balls, not the round sort, but the dancing sort, like they have for the farm lot. Those Southland farmers who can’t find anyone to marry. Only my ball would be here in Tauranga, just off the beach underwater at Rabbit Island. No decorations required we would go with the Mother Nature theme.

And looks wouldn’t count, because everyone looks like a superhero in their super-tight, after-winter wetsuits, so it would all come down to personality.

And that wouldn’t count either unless someone had one of those fancy ‘talk under the water’ masks. Well two really or it would be a one-way conversation. Or a short one if it were only two guys with them, or not depending on whether you have jumped the fence and joined the darkside. I don’t judge.

And the ball would only be about 45 minutes because your tank would likely run out after that, so that would keep the costs down.

So, if I organise this thing, it would only run for 45 minutes, with no set-up costs, no band because no one could hear them, unless it was a band of drummers. Some kind of Scottish extravaganza maybe? And if I charge the usual $100 entry, I could make a killing. No drinks either come to think of it.

Right who’s in?

Omanu’s junior athletes win big Omanu Beach Surf Lifesaving Club has taken out the Bay of Plenty Junior Surf Champs for the third year running.

Close to 400 junior surf athletes representing surf lifesaving clubs from the Coromandel to Hawke’s Bay attended the annual event on December 18 at Ohope Beach in Whakatane.

Omanu finished in first place with 141 points, followed by neighbouring clubs Papamoa on 128 points taking second and Mount Maunganui with 114 points coming third.

Omanu athletes Lucy Bartlett claimed five individual gold medals and a silver, while fellow junior surf lifesaver Tanner Baxter took home three golds, one silver and a bronze medal.

Omanu Beach Surf Life Saving Club general manager Michelle Smith is full of praise for the athletes who completed well on the day.

“Omanu promotes whole family involvement,

encouraging children of all ages to gain confidence in a beach environment.

“Omanu’s results reflect the

excellent junior surf programme we have. We had a number of new-to-surf kids competing for the first time and it was great to see them loving the competition experience.”

Events included beach sprint, beach flags, beach relays, run-swim-run, surf race, board races, diamond Ironman/woman and-six person Cameron relays.

For Hamish Nairn and Mel Tregurtha, it was something they had to face up to when their son Finn, then aged five, fell ill two years ago.

“Just before he was five he caught a tummy bug his sister had, which lasted only two days with her.

But his immune system decided it was a bad thing,” says Hamish.

“He had an autoimmune response, which shut his system down and gave him encephalitis, which is an inflammation of the brain.”

The parents rushed Finn, now seven, to Tauranga Hospital, and within one-hour-and-a-half he was flown to Starship, where he spent seven days in an Intensive Care Unit. The encephalitis caused a severe brain injury, essentially setting him back to being like a newborn.

“When he woke up he had to relearn how to open his eyes, breathe, swallow, you name it.”

Finn spent several months up in Auckland, first in Starship, then physical rehab.

“From the outset all the therapists commented he was trying so hard,” says Mel. And he has done well. Despite losing much of his confidence – he will never be the way he was before – Finn has made an incredible recovery.

“He can be shy and self-conscious, and because he can’t do things he gets very frustrated.

“As long as he’s given the time to do things at his own pace, he’ll be fine. He’s the greatest little kid though; he’s neat,” says Hamish.

During Finn’s time in Auckland, Mel had to stay with him, which meant she could not work. As a consequence, the family experienced some financial strain, and ended up needing the foodbank for a time.

“We found by the time basic expenses were paid, food was coming a distant second.”

Hamish says the foodbank is a very close charity to his heart.

“Many people have a stigma about going to the foodbank, and pride stops them from using the service.

“But people from all walks of life can need it.”

His colleagues at TrustPower recently took part in a charity auction to raise money for the foodbank, organised by his team leader Paula Schlegel.

It was a special moment for him to see so much support for a charity that had supported his family through an unbelievably tough time.

Taking the ‘barb’ out of the barbecue this summer What better way to enjoy summer than to eat outdoors? But before you fire up the barbecue and whip up a salad – take a minute to ensure you, your friends and family will be safe from the misery of food poisoning.

Every year lots of New Zealanders get foodborne illnesses and many are caused by unsafe food handling practices in the home. Clean, Cook, Cover, Chill is the advice to remember, says medical officer of health Dr Phil Shoemack.

“Whether you go on a picnic, barbecue or camping trip – you’ll be taking your food out of the fridge or freezer,” says Phil. “As soon as the temperature

of the food begins to rise, bacteria in the food can multiply and this could be a risk.

“Unless perishable food is handled properly, it can cause problems so keep hot food hot and cold food cold – or don’t keep it at all.” Cleaned the barbecue since last summer? A dirty barbecue is a haven for pests, which love to spread bacteria,

so make sure it has been cleaned before you use it. Your hands and any utensils also need to be cleaned thoroughly.

Wash for 20 seconds, and dry for 20 seconds, before and after preparing food.

“Cross contamination from raw to cooked foods is one of the biggest risks,” says Phil.

“Be careful with knives, cutting boards, hands – anything used for raw and cooked foods and clean them thoroughly when moving from raw to cooked foods.

“Preferably, use different chopping boards for meat and other food.”

Perishable foods should always be refrigerated until needed, which means removing food from the fridge or chilly bin only when you are ready to cook it.

“It can be better to pre-cook these foods. When taking foods off the barbecue, use a clean plate, not the

Fancy summer ice cream made simple?

Things are heating up – so this is the time of year we love to savour something cool.

Ice cream is a tasty option – but have you ever considered making your own?

Whether you have an ice cream maker or not – there’s heaps of recipes out there which you can try.

Here’s a very simple ice cream recipe, which fellow staff member Karen Raikes has offered.

For this one you don’t need a fancy machine or

fancy ingredients. Just whip 500ml of cream in a bowl, gently fold in a can of condensed milk then add three crushed Crunchie chocolate bars – or a bag of bite-sized Crunchie bars.

Pop into a container with the lid on – and place in the freezer until the mixture is frozen.

Usually this takes overnight. And it makes about three litres of yummy ice cream. Plus, you could put your own taste on the mixture by swapping the Crunchie for your favourite chocolate bar.

Apparently using sweetened condensed milk as a base works because the milk is concentrated and has little water in it, which helps achieve a creamy ice cream.

Another recipe you can try is beat four egg yolks and one cup of caster sugar together until pale and creamy. In another bowl whip up two cups of cream until stiff.

Then fold the two mixtures together and pour into a container, seal with a lid and freeze until firm.

This one maybe good to add your own flavour twist as well.

The fat and protein from the egg yolks are supposed to be ideal in ice

cream. Because fat makes ice cream soft and creamy and protein, once heated, traps water in its fibres stopping it from forming rough icicles.

Lastly, there’s a fruity alternative that is super easy. And it’s probably the healthiest for the kids, with no sugar or sweetened condensed milk in it. The yolks also prevent the ice cream so quickly.

Simply blend together one 250ml container of sour cream with one banana and one avocado. Pour into a plastic container and cover with a sealable lid, then freeze. Once Merle Foster firm, enjoy!

Festive food on a plate It’s festive time –and time for some treats. So here’s some of Peter Blakeway’s salad recipes to make your table shine for family and guests alike.

Avocado and cucumber salad with mint and almond pesto

Serves 6 Salad ingredients 2 avocados, sliced 1 Lebanese cucumber, sliced lengthways 50g baby spinach leaves 1 punnet yellow baby tomatoes, halved Mint and almond pesto ingredients ½ clove garlic, coarsely chopped ½ cup tightly packed mint leaves ¼ cup toasted blanched almonds ¼ cup The Grove Avocado oil, plus extra if necessary Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Method To make the dressing, whiz garlic and mint in a food processor to chop.

Add almonds and process gain until coarsely ground. With motor running, drizzle the oil through the feed tube and process until incorporated, adding more oil if necessary to bring the mixture to a smooth and flowing paste. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Arrange the avocado, cucumber,

spinach and tomato on a large platter.

Drizzle over the dressing and serve.

Beetroot, watercress and goats’ cheese salad

Peter says the beetroot works magically with goats’ cheese here, providing contrasting crunch and flavour and adding a real hit of colour to the festive table.

Serves 4 Ingredients 200g focaccia, cut into 1cm cubes 2 Tbsp Horopito infused Avocado Oil 4 cooked beetroots, cut into wedges 2 oranges, peeled and divided into segments 75g watercress leaves 200g goats’ cheese Fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped Method Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius.

Toss focaccia cubes in one tablespoon of oil and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until crisp and golden. Meanwhile, toss together beetroot, orange and watercress in a large salad bowl. Crumble over goats’ cheese, top with the croutons, drizzle with remaining olive oil and garnish with chopped parsley.

Katikati pupils help abandoned and abused cats The entrepreneurial skills of a group of Katikati Primary School pupils will benefit Tauranga SPCA in its care for abandoned and abused cats.

New staff for council customer needs A new appointment’s been made by the Western Bay of Plenty District Council to bring focus to the needs of council customers and communities in their dealings with the council.

Erica Holtsbaum has been appointed as group manager of technology, customer and community services after it became clear people wanted to engage and transact with the council 24/7.

Erica’s experience is in senior management roles at Auckland University, Midland District Health Board and Waikato Regional Council. She has extensive strategic experience as a transformational

manager for a range of ICT and customerfocused programmes.

“Council wants to make it easier for customers to engage and has continually looked for ways to improve frontline services,” says Erica. “In our increasingly digital world it is important to explore all opportunities to provide customer service in an online environment.”

Erica says we’ve probably all experienced an online service that’s left us feeling less than satisfied. “So the challenge is to be clear about when it is best to provide an online service for council transactions, or whether they may need to provide a service that is face-to-face or at the end of a telephone.” Erica starts her new role at the end of January 2017.

Supporting people with disabilities into work Health Minister Jonathan Coleman and Social Development Minister Anne Tolley say a collaboration between MSD and four DHBs will trial different ways to support people with health conditions and disabilities into work.

“Across government, Ministries are exploring ways they can work more collaboratively with the aim of improving the overall life outcomes of New Zealanders,” says Jonathan. “It’s important to ensure patients with

complex or long term health conditions or disabilities are receiving coordinated care which supports them to achieve their long-term goals.

For many, having the fulfilment of being in appropriate paid work is one of these goals.”

Budget 2016 committed $9 million over three years into the Oranga Mahi programme, under which a range of trials will work to break the pattern of welfare dependency by improving service

delivery and investment decisions.

The programme is being trialled, with the support of Work and Income, using volunteer patients from Canterbury, Northland, Waikato and Waitemata DHBs. “We know that work gives people confidence and connects them to their communities,” says Anne.

“Individuals have different needs and comfort levels, and we need to ensure we have a flexible system which can support them.

“Supporting people back into paid employment involves many sectors coming together.

“These trials put the individual at the centre and helps to co-ordinate the relevant services.”

Youth funds for 2017 Western Bay of Plenty District Council has secured $20,000 of a $90,000 nationwide Ministry of Youth Development funding pool to help young people learn emergency management skills. Katikati and Maketu each received $10,000 to deliver the Youth in Emergency Services programme in 2017. It’s the second consecutive year WBOPDC has successfully applied for the funding.

“To have received $20,000 of the $90,000 granted nationwide is testimony to the success of YES in Katikati and Maketu last year, when all but one of the 30 young people graduated from the programmes,” says WBOPDC community relations advisor Ben Wilson.

Up to 15 young people aged between 16 and 20 are brought into each programme where they learn skills by working with the fire service, Red Cross, Coastguard, St John and Civil Defence Emergency Management teams.

By-election on the way Residents in Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s Maketu-Te Puke Ward may want to update their voting details with a by-election coming up in February 2017.

Following the local body elections in October Mike Lally and Grant dally were elected as Maketu-Te Puke Ward councillors, which saw them ineligible to also be Te Puke Community Board members.

This saw Joan Dugmore elected to the board to fill one vacancy, with the empty chair forcing a by-election.

Nominations for the by-election closed on December 22 – and voting will open from January 26, 2017, to February 17, 2017.

Do we drip-feed onto SH2?

On December 19 residents of Omokoroa received a ever a major catastrophe and we all have to evacuate. leaflet in the mail explaining all the proposed changes Everyone trying to get out onto State Highway 2 along for our not-so-little village. Residential, commercial, with hundreds of other panicking citizens from other industrial and educational facilities in the pipeline. All areas, bottlenecked at the Omokoroa Rd-SH2 junction very good for Omokoroa and the wider Western Bay and going nowhere fast. Doesn’t bare thinking about. of Plenty area, but not so good for the traffic sector.

Nowhere in that leaflet was there mention of a second road in and out of Omokoroa. How is Omokoroa Rd supposed to cope with this proposed increase in traffic? I guess we will just have to “drip feed” our way out onto State Highway 2 like drops from an eye dropper.

One at a time trying to squeeze into the main traffic flow, which is increasing daily. It’s bad enough now! Imagine what it will be like in a couple of years when all these new houses are occupied, with many families having two cars if not more.

God knows what we’ll do if there’s The Omokoroa Rd and State Highway 2 intersection after lunchtime.

He’s shown his consummate ability in handling difficult problems by ignoring their existence. A Teflon Man indeed. But no doubt his successor will continue his party’s racist policies.

Taxing people out of houses RE: Gareth Morgan’s The Opportunities Party.

The NZ political scene local and central - is littered with giants of ineptitude.

Now we have another group sticking their heads above the parapet of lunacy, who want to tax people out of their houses and onto the waiting list and sleeping in cars as long as they don’t have too much equity in the car and be forced out of that too.

Surely to God even the average joe looking for a village can see that once someone has scraped together a deposit for a house he or she would not be able to afford to pay a tax on their miserably small equity in the house - and so be forced out of that hard earned house. Wake up lads and listen to the rustle of the banknotes and leave politics to those of some degree of common sense.

Worse, of course, would be the pensioners who are now freehold after a life’s hard work could be forced out of the homes because they couldn’t possible pay such as tax out of the small pension they live on.

We don’t want Auckland’s refugees I, like many others, am sick and tired of reading media reports on how values of Tauranga houses have rocketed, the best suburbs to live in and how good that is for growth with new residents - said to be in the vicinity of 8000 last year - pouring into Tauranga.

Basically those flocking here are in reality property and financial refugees from Auckland and any nebulous economic benefit they bring is well and truly dissipated by the huge pressure put on infrastructure, including medical care, hospitals, schools and roading – which is gridlocks most days - as traffic volumes have increased 10 per cent. This will take years to address

and fix, if ever.

In addition newbies pining for the facilities they had in Auckland like museums,

Quality and China should not be used in the same sentence. If you flood the market with cheap crappy homes it will crash, just like it did 14 months ago in Christchurch when a couple hundred spec houses were dumped on the market by a big player when the market already plateaued. As a tradie, like thousands in the Tauranga area who earn their living off the industry, Tauranga was hit hard during the recession, which seemed to drag on.

This orca help business is wrong Is this the way we want our council officers to do business – through statute, protocols, rules and regulations and with not one ounce of regard to humanity and compassion.

Because I for one think the Waikato Regional Council has badly misread public feeling on the orca rescue debacle.

A harbour master answers the call to help rescue the orca tangled in a cray pot. Without help it would surely have died.

For his initiative, for answering the call, he is stood down.

The council’s first response to this man’s selflessness is to check whether any regulations were breached or operational procedures not followed during the rescue. The council says it’s about health and safety.

So ironic it’s actually laughable The United States of America has a mission statement that reads: ‘We reserve the right to change the regime of any country that does not pay due homage to the USA and allow us to abuse them’.

This they have followed fastidiously since the end of World War II with mixed success.

MUSICPLUS

A little whine and a cocktail I was having a bit of a whine about modern music the other day when I was berated by someone younger.

So I pulled myself together. Had sort of an epiphany. ‘Damnit’ I thought, I’ve become that guy. You know the one, the curmudgeonly old git who spends his life complaining endlessly about what the ‘yoof ’ of today are listening to.

And it’s either too fast or has too much of those annoying drums or doesn’t have a tune you can sing along to or you can’t hear what the singer is singing anymore because it’s all too loud and there aren’t any words that are really about anything these days and anyway they’re just shouting and not even singing properly just rapping to a whole bunch of electronic stuff or yelling like a hoon over some distorted noise...

Anyway, I don’t think, in reality, I’m quite that guy yet. But, nagdarnit, those warbly vocals over-effected by extreme auto-tuning just do my head in. There. I admitted it.

My current bête noire. Thankfully, I’ve been around long enough to realise that this brief blip will soon pass and everyone will be as embarrassed by it as they now are about synthesised drums from the eighties.

But this is nothing new.

The historical case

Tracing history back – and yes, it is just one damn thing after another – I was amused to find that the phenomenon of old folk sounding off about music of the young began much earlier than I expected.

These days we marvel at clips of DJs in the 1950s smashing rock ‘n’ roll records

and vowing not to ever play that new abomination. And it had hardly even been named. But that hardly cuts it in historical terms…

It would appear to be a Greek gentleman who first got his groove on by bitching about the young. His name was Plato.

He actually did quite a bit of famous writing and thinking and is responsible for quite a lot of Ideas Of Significance, some of them very good.

Plato’s Retreat was named after him, and that was several millennium after his passing, so he was clearly a dude of import.

He was also the first notable person to complain that music used to be good back in his day but that kids now will listen to any old junk. And it wasn’t just the ‘yoof ’ that were to blame of course. As has so often been the way throughout history, Plato stuck the knife where it often ends: into the musicians.

Musicians to blame

He whined in The Laws that talentless modern musicians “mix dirges with hymns and paeans with dithyrambs”. Great Scott!

No wonder the Greek empire fell. You can tell things are beginning to collapse when people start mixing their dirges with hymns.

And as for dithyrambs?

It’s amazing the civilization lasted as long as it did with such bowdlerisation.

And, being the legendary grumpy-guts that he clearly was, Plato had all of the same tired old generational reasons for this artistic decline; the exact explanation given every decade for the misbehaviour of rebellious young artists.

He pronounced it was caused by said musicians “being frenzied and unduly possessed by a spirit of pleasure”.

Yep, in case anyone wondered, Plato was a boring old fart.

And with that, I’ll sign off for another year. My thanks for everyone who has been in touch by email or otherwise – if by chance I didn’t respond please accept my humblest apologies.

Despite writing weekly Plato. for The Sun I’m a lousy correspondent and have a memory the size of a goldfish.

I would, however, as has become traditional, like to leave you with a New Year’s cocktail recipe. It’s one of my current go-to drinks, a French Martini.

The only difficulty is you’ll have to buy a bottle of Chambord, a raspberry liqueur.

Here we go: 50ml vodka, 50ml pineapple juice, 20ml Chambord – shake with ice, strain. Enough for one.

Trying to attain God’s free gift by working or paying for it would be insulting, just as it would be very offensive for a wife to offer to pay for flowers from her romantic husband.

Being thankful Here are my meditations on why the way of salvation in Christianity is so wonderful. As Christians, we have great security and confidence in our salvation.

We don’t have to reach a certain level of goodness to be accepted by God. God counts as our righteousness, the righteousness of Christ, who we trust in alone for our salvation.

We can be certain God won’t change His mind given the great sacrifice and suffering of His only begotten Son on our behalf.

Our way of salvation truly demonstrates God‘s unconditional love

toward us. It is God who saves us, not we ourselves.

This is very comforting and reassuring as we all have many faults.

We have God living in us through the Holy Spirit strengthening us to continue in faith to the end. We have a demonstration, strongly supported by many witnesses, of how the dead can be raised – namely, Jesus.

Even a mass murderer can be forgiven

by God. That’s great news if we feel the things we have done in our life are unforgivable.

I was visiting family in the United States a few weeks ago and they had just had Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is celebrated in several countries and I really like the idea of setting aside a special time for that purpose. It was originally a day of giving thanks for the blessings of the harvest and the preceding year.

At the celebration of the first Thanksgiving, nearly four centuries ago, there were five kernels of corn set next to each plate. Why? Because prior to the Pilgrim’s first successful harvest, times had been so tough and food so scarce that their daily ration of corn was a mere five kernels.

Even though it was a time of feasting and celebration of God’s goodness to them in a time of plenty, the Pilgrims knew it was important to remember His faithfulness to sustain them in the difficult times. So five kernels of corn were set beside each plate as a kind of monument to what He had brought them through. It’s a tradition that continues around many Thanksgiving tables to this day.

We are so blessed in this country! When we look at what is happening in many parts of the world, we should be grateful and thankful people, even when going through tough times.

The Bible encourages us to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:18)”.

Why not give thanks for the past year? And in faith, thank God for the new one!
