Alien signals and a UK takeover Shocking new evidence this week suggests that expansion of the universe is not accelerating. whether any of you noticed.

Most of our readers have been experiencing sleepless nights, worrying about the rate of the universe’s expansion, so this will come as some welcome relief for many of you. That, along with the news that Justin Timberlake voted, will make everyone feel better.

Anyway, new research calls into question some deeply held beliefs about the current cosmic situation, according to the people from Oxford. And they know their stuff. For starters, they make good dictionaries and turned out some sturdy caravans last century.

Another bunch of researchers reckon abnormalities in light coming from a couple of stars is a sign that aliens are signalling us. They’re copping a bit of flak from the astronomy fraternity, who say it’s just a glitch. Possibly it’s Morse Code, reading: “Please not Trump” or “Hilary? Seriously?”

One thing is for sure, the aliens will not want to communicate much longer when they see the emerging new leadership of the Earth’s most powerful nation.

Resolving issues

The following information came on the email machine has been around in various versions over the years, but seems particularly pertinent now:

When faith and courage overcomes Graham Aitcheson was stabbed when he thwarted armed robbers at AJ’s lotto shop.

The normally quiet and reserved drummer in the Baptist Church band responded to the would-be armed robbers in the way he thought best, at the time and under the pressure.

“I screamed at them to f*** off,” says Graham Aitchison. Desperate times demanded desperate measures. “I said that because I really didn‘t know what else to say.

“I was driven by adrenalin and the desire to see wrongs righted.”

Knives were being flashed, people were screaming, hearts were pumping, tension was running high. An attempted robbery was going down at AJ’s Lotto shop on Tauranga’s Devonport Rd on September 29 and a wrong move could have been a fatal move.

“No, I didn’t consider the

consequences. There wasn’t time.

You just trust God is with you regardless of your circumstances.”

Graham’s the bloke who popped out from work for a pie and iced chocolate. And within his lunch break he demonstrated some selfless heroics by foiling an armed robbery, nabbing an alleged offender, and getting cut up and hospitalised.

All in his lunch break from Tauranga City Council’s call centre. “I’m a fairly quiet kind of guy so it wasn’t how I expected the day to pan out. But yes, I could have lost a lot,” says Graham, delicately understating the possible consequences of the high drama that went down in broad daylight, right at lunchtime in the busiest part of town.

“It could have ended very badly for me.” He could have died, as his wife Chantelle reminds him.

That day Graham was headed down Devonport Rd.

“Two guys came towards me.

They had their hoodies up and they were wearing black masks with the eyeholes cut out.”

A robbery was about to go down, weapons were involved and lives possibly endangered. “I guess so, but there was just something in me that said I needed to take action.” So he turned around and followed them.

The two hooded and masked youths went into AJ’s lotto shop.

“I heard the owner of the shop screaming for dear life. One of the guys was threatening her with some kind of weapon, she was standing on the counter, and the other guy was standing by the door threatening people outside.”

Graham took control of the situation, asking people to call the Police.

Then he stepped into the fray.

Truck and ute collide on Kaimai Fire crews freed a truck driver from his overturned rig after a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 29 on Tuesday.

The truck collided with a ute on the Matamata-side of the Kaimai Range near Rapurapu Rd at about 1.30pm. The truck driver sustained moderate injuries while the ute driver suffered head injuries.

Greerton’s hazmat unit was dispatch as the truck had been transporting chemicals, but was later established to be a non-threatening fertiliser.

Blessing for tidal stairs project A small crowd of Tauranga City councillors, construction workers and stakeholders gathered on The Strand waterfront for the blessing of the new tidal stairs project on Tuesday.

The $2.8 million project includes 49 metres of tidal stairs, a new 27 metre pier and a new 24m by 3m floating pontoon. Council hopes to complete the project before Easter 2017 The community can watch the construction via a camera feed at: www.tauranga.govt.nz/ accesstowater

Leeder re-elected BOPRC chair Doug Leeder has been re-elected chair of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council for a second threeyear term after receiving unanimous support from councillors at the BOPRC’s inaugural meeting in Whakatane on Tuesday.

Doug says he’s looking forward to progressing five community outcomes; water quality and quantity, environmental protection, resilience and safety, economic development, and leadership for the Bay of Plenty.

Jane Nees was also unanimously elected deputy chair, a position she’s held for the last three years.

But do they waste any of this food?

According to Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s Environmental Solid Waste team leader Ilze Kruis, the answer is more than likely ‘yes’.

Where does this food waste end up?

“We did a survey in July and found 40 per cent of the [Western BOP district’s] rubbish – both rural and urban – is organic waste that can be diverted away from landfill.”

Ilze and her team know from other previous surveys, a lot of food and other organic waste going into rubbish bags could be re-used, fed to animals, or go to composting.

A plan As one of more than 60 council participants in the three-year national ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’ campaign – to reduce the amount of food Kiwis throw out – Ilze has a plan.

Next month it includes offering Western Bay residents the chance to do their part for the environment by being smart with unavoidable food waste, namely home worm composting.

Workshops for households interested in learning the basics of ‘vermicomposting’ will run November 12 in Katikati and November 19 in Te Puke, from 1-3pm.

“The two-hour workshop teaches how to harvest the compost or ‘vermi-cast’ to use on gardens as a beneficial plant food and soil conditioner,” says Ilze.

“These workshops have proven very popular in Tauranga City, so we wanted to bring them to our Western Bay

communities.”

Participants receive their own worm farm bin, worms, lime and compost so they can get started straight away. The workshop and composting kit will cost participants a subsidised rate of $34.50.

The kit itself is usually valued at $255.

Ilze says the ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’ campaign highlights the importance of planning food purchases and meals, being smart about food storage and being creative with leftovers.

Uneaten

This is because it’s estimated Kiwis spend $872 million a year on food that gets thrown away uneaten. There are also tips to educate people on how to deal with the non-avoidable waste disposal, which is where the worm farming comes into play.

“The trend [of chucking food in the rubbish] is the same for the whole of NZ – not just in our district.” says Ilze.

“This whole campaign is about getting people to think about what they are buying at the supermarket and not getting conned by the shop’s marketing strategies.”

“It’s a holistic way of looking at where Ilze Kruis with some of her slippery friends at we are going, what we are doing and to the Western Bay District Council worm farm. make the average person stop and think.”

Bay population fourth fastest to grow The Bay of Plenty has been rated the fourth fastest regional council area in the country’s popu-lation growth in the year to June 2016, according to Statistics NZ. The government department says the four fastestgrowing regional council areas accounted for more than 75 per cent of New Zealand’s population growth in the year to June.

Auckland’s population swelled with a 2.8 per cent increase, followed by Canterbury and Waika-to with 2.3 per cent each, and Bay of Plenty grew by 2.2 per cent.These regions all exceeded the national level of 2.1 per cent growth. Fifteen of NZ’s 16 regions experienced growth and three-quarters had greater increases than the previous year.

Vandals attack Mount company Two men in their 20s were arrested after being caught throwing stones through a window at Mount Maunganui’s Clearwater Aquariums on Monday.

The men threw stones through a second-storey floor window which sprayed glass into aquariums being used as breeding tanks filled with tropical and marine fish worth thousands of dollars.

It’s the second incident the company suffered during the weekend after someone deliberately put bits of copper in another aquarium of marine fish on Saturday.

Hamilton woman found in Tauranga An elderly woman missing from a Hamilton resthome for almost two weeks was found by Police in Tauranga on Monday.

Joan Gringley, 68, left her resthome on October 11, telling staff she was going out and would return on October 13-14. When she failed to return staff became concerned for her safety and raised the alarm with Police.

On Monday morning a concerned member of the public spotted the woman in Tauranga and contacted Police. A patrol picked Gringley up “unharmed but fragile”.

Empowering city residents He traipsed around the Otumoetai-Pyes Pa ward visiting more than 4000 households in the local body elections.

He didn’t win a Tauranga City Council seat – now he’s trying to educate residents on how they can get involved and have their say at council. Why? “It came about because I heard from so many people – and it was frustrating to me – that they didn’t bother to vote,” says Sheldon Nesdale.

“They’d have the voting documents right there – on the kitchen bench – but there’s this feeling that once you pick it up you have to do the research because mostly they are strangers on the list.

“And you really feel like you should know these people before you vote for them. So, they [would-be voters] haven’t got enough [knowledge] to tick those boxes.”

Sheldon is now using his former campaign website to post videos teaching residents about civics, and how to get involved in local government decisions.

“People might not know what civics means – basically, it is the study of government,” says Sheldon, who admits he’ll run in the next local body elections three years away – and possibly next year’s General Election. “Although I’m unsure

The last offering – ‘How can I have input into Tauranga City Council decisions’ – really strikes a chord with Sheldon.

“I’ve listed eight ways in which people can do something – from lest effective to most effective.”

“Number one is turn up in person.

“People don’t know this, but for every council meeting there is 15 minutes set aside at the start where anybody from the public can talk about anything they like.”

“I think that’s marvellous – your topic doesn’t have to be on the agenda, you just give a few days’ notice, turn up, and speak directly to councillors and the mayor all at once and say your thing.”

“Often I’ve heard people’s comments come back into discussion later on when councillors are talking about the topic.” So is Sheldon doing this to empower people? Or is he rebuilding his reputation?

Hamburger, sushi or a pitstop?

The company will have spent the thick end of $50 million morphing Papamoa Plaza into a modern shopping experience, but the little old lady on a walking stick only had concern for the new dunnies.

“I’m very excited about the new toilets,” she said on the eve of opening of the foodcourt.

She collared centre manager David Hill near the new foodcourt on Wednesday, when it was still bedlam, still a construction site.

But by 9am yesterday it was awash in butter chicken, sushi, doner kebabs, burgers, dumplings and juice. Food was up and heads were down. “That’s the lovely thing,” says the terminally enthusiastic David. He had 90 workmen frantically finishing stuff on stage 2B at the plaza but he still made

time to exchange niceties with the little old lady. “It’s about ownership, it’s their place, their plaza.” And their new dunnies.

“They’re a lovely place to stop,” says David. But a toilet is a toilet is a toilet. “Hell no! It’s the whole experience of coming into something light bright and clean.”

They’re ‘stunning’ at the refurbished Papamoa apparently.

“Everything from the familyfriendly parent room, the 24 hour TV, the change table and microwave to the state-of-the-art hand dryers, basins and cubicles.”

Microwave? TV? This is a man who went from Siberia to St Petersburg, from Edmonton to Los Angeles plundering shopping mall ideas and he wrote his masters’ thesis on factors affecting shopping centre profitability – he probably knows when a mall dunny is one to behold. And whether it needs a microwave and a TV.

It’s a proud moment for David, the man who fixes shopping centres, because Papamoa Plaza was ‘knackered’. “I walked in here three years ago, the building was distressed, the retailers were distressed and I was distressed.” He thinks he remembers crying.

We all remember it, and not kindly, the faux Mexican hacienda look that even in 1997 when it opened looked dated. But not yesterday, not today.

Seven new food outlets in a sprawling foodcourt about twoand-a-half tennis courts big, tables for 370 diners, cabana style seating for another 24 and 50-plus jobs.

Add a couple of new shops opening today and that comes to $20 million invested in just this stage of the development.

$ It takes special people to run the Oasis home on 9th Ave. Husband-and-wife duo Erena and Scottie Lagas have lived and worked at Oasis for nearly two years, and Erena says it’s been a wonderful experience.

“Scottie and I are house parents here, so we are live-in and we oversee the running of the house, we create a homely and fun atmosphere for the children, we’re basically like aunty and uncle really,” says Erena.

Oasis is a respite care home run by the Open Home Foundation organisation, and is open for children with intellectual or physical disabilities such as children with autism. The couple work together to create a calm and fun

atmosphere for children, while their families are able to receive a respite break. “During the weekdays after-school we try to keep it kind of chilled. We keep it as much of a home environment as possible; it’s not a facility as such, it’s a homely environment to relax or engage in an activity with us like art, puzzles or building Lego.

“Outdoors at Oasis House there is a basketball hoop, sandpit and trampoline. And then there are the outings to the skate park, playground, and our bushwalks; there’s so much to do,” says Erena.

“It really is just supplying a place of rest and fun activities for them while their family has a break.”

The Johnson family, who have used Oasis in the past, say the house

has been a great service for their family.

“Oasis provides a fun, safe, ‘home away from home’ experience with carers that are engaged and feel like an extension of our family.”

Erena, Scottie and their eight-yearold son Noah live in the house 24/7 and Erena says the job is a bit different to your average nine-tofive workday.

Oasis has their open day this weekend, and Erena encourages everyone interested to come along.

“I think that if any parent thinks they and their child would benefit from this, they’re welcome to come and have a look and see what this place is like, and what we are about here at Oasis House.”

Helping save the animals Sunny Davis and Maya Stone are the force behind Animal Day this Sunday.

This Sunday at Omokoroa No 1 School is Animal Day, a fundraising event organised entirely by two schoolgirls.

Maya Stone and Sunny Davis, both aged 11, have spent months organising the follow-up to last year’s Animal Day, which raised more than $1000 for the World Wildlife Fund.

This year they’ve organised face painting, pony rides, baking stalls and craft stalls. Maya’s mum Emma Prill says her daughter’s been busy at work.

“Last year Maya did a series of gift cards that sold really well. So this year she’s been busy making more, with her own artwork on the front.”

On the back of the cards is a message from Maya calling for people to take action.

“We are the animals’ last chance. If we don’t save them they will go, forever. Imagine a world without

animals. Let’s save them together and be thankful for the world that we share.

“People do not realise that what they are killing they cannot buy back. So let’s speak louder for the animals, try harder for the animals and make a change for their future. I speak now for this generation but also for generations to come.”

This year they’re fundraising for Jamie Joseph, a wildlife activist working to end poaching in South Africa.

Emma says it’s all the girls’ idea, and she speaks highly of her daughter’s initiative.

“I’m proud of her for getting up and doing something to make a difference.”

Animal Day is this Sunday, October 30, from 10am2pm at Omokoroa No 1 School.

The strength to lead CURTAINS & BLINDS The answer is unequivocal, it’s the people you vote onto council – but only if they have the strength to lead.

Councils operate a bit like a cruise ship. The councillors and the Mayor are the bridge officers; the CEO is the chief engineer and you are the paying passengers. In theory, the bridge officers should listen to the passengers, keep watch out the window, set a course and instruct the chief engineer to “make it so”.

However, up and down the country and even at times in this city’s past some bridge officers are more interested in being the entertainment than keeping watch.

Some don’t look out the window at all while others wrestle for control of the wheel especially if the Captain is a bit timid. All the while, the chief engineer has locked the steering hard to starboard and the ship

is going around in circles because he isn’t getting coherent instructions from the bridge about where to go.

On Monday your newly elected council will be sworn in and we will have control of our city’s direction for the next three years.

Will we look to the horizon, debate and then set a clear course? Or will we abdicate our responsibility to you, the paying passengers and stand by as the ship wastes fuel turning around in a circle on autopilot?

Who will be crowned Bird of the Year?

Bay residents have two days left to vote for the favourite feather friend to clinch the title of 2016 Bird of the Year.

Now in its 12th year, the competition raises awareness for New Zealand’s much loved native birds and the threats they face.

“Tragically, 80 per cent of our birds are classified as threatened or at risk. Their habitats have been destroyed and introduced mammalian predators such as stoats, cats, possums and rats prey on eggs, young birds and adults,” says Forest & Bird’s Kimberley Collins.

The competition involves well-known and enthusiastic New Zealanders

acting as ‘campaign managers’ for their favourite birds with many going to great lengths to get New Zealanders to vote for their chosen bird.

Much like a general election, the competition includes all the drama and tactics that you might see in a political campaign.

“The competition can be fierce, and people find all sorts of ways to promote their bird,” says Kimberley.

Last year’s Bird of the Year was the bar-tailed godwit, which swooped into the lead with 1957 votes.

When companions and crackers clash They come with benign names like falling leaves, confetti, chrysanthemums, Roman candles, bouquets and brocades.

But there are also bombettes, barrages, the M80, Bottle rockets, cherry bombs, missiles and mortars – considerably more threatening.

Regardless of names, companion pets like cats, dogs and birds hate them. They are fireworks and they go on sale from Wednesday,

November 2, through until Guy Fawkes on Saturday, November 5.

The New Zealand Veterinary Association is pre-empting events by urging everyone to remember the wellbeing of pets.

“Pets can suffer extreme anxiety and develop phobias in relation to fireworks,” says Dr Helen Beattie, who is president of NZVA’s companion animal veterinarian’s branch.However, vets are able to improve wellbeing of pets with advice and treatments to reduce anxiety. So they encourage pet

owners to seek advice well before November 5 to reduce the physical and psychological harm fireworks may cause.

“There’s often an increase in missing pets around Guy Fawkes so pet owners should ensure their animals have a secure, safe, and an indoor space for the night,” says Helen. Microchipping will ensure animals that do escape and get lost, will be found and returned.

Helen says pet owners can help prepare their furry friends in the weeks leading up to Guy Fawkes on November 5. “Talk to your vet about sedatives to reduce anxiety and find out whether a calming pheromone diffuser leading up to fireworks might be suitable.”

Walk the dog during the day, then bring all animals inside night falls.

Avoid excessive treating or making too much of a fuss as this may inadvertently

reinforce the pet’s anxiety.

Keep pets indoors with windows closed and curtains drawn. Use the radio or TV to create a comforting sound.

Provide safe coverings for your pet to hide under. Evacuate your pet to a place they will be more comfortable.

Remain calm and confident and avoid excessive fussing over nervous animals.

So when Plunket approached the Acorn Foundation two years ago with a proposal to help them improve their service, they were keen to learn more.

All of Plunket’s frontline staff were still using pen and paper to make and store all their child health records.

It was extremely hard for nurses to access any records remotely, which

also compromised of the timeliness of making referrals to external health providers when needed. The whole system was tired and inefficient, and needed massive investment in technology in order to address issues.

The Acorn Foundation committed $30,000 to help Plunket develop a customised programme and supply every Plunket nurse with a tablet device to access the new system from anywhere.

Plunket has just celebrated the launch of the new system in the Western Bay of Plenty, with all staff now trained and enjoying its efficiencies.

Plunket’s acting chief funding and marketing officer Carolyn Mettrick says without the help of philanthropic organisations such as Acorn Foundation “this journey would have been much more difficult”. “We are very grateful for the support received”.

New boss lands at Land Information NZ Land Information New Zealand has a new chief executive – Andrew Crisp, who has been acting CEO since July.

LINZ is the government department responsible for providing accurate information about where people and places are, giving people confidence in their property rights and ensuring Crown property is well managed for future generations.

Open day for ‘it’s not ok’ The emergency services and armed forces are teaming up this weekend to help put an end to family violence in all of its many forms.

Family violence is not just physical – violence can be psychological and emotional, both of which are very common forms of violence against women and children.

This Sunday, October 30, the emergency services and armed forces will band together for the Emergency Services and Armed Forces Open Day to get a message across – it’s okay to ask for help.

Tauranga Moana Abuse Prevention Strategy – or TMAPS – is working with the services to help raise awareness to stop violence.

Family violence response coordinator Heather Beddie from Family Works says our communities are part of the solution.

Police are focusing on Heavy Motor Vehicles in the Bay of Plenty – and nationwide – in the lead-up to Christmas as drivers begin to distribute the bulk of festive season freight around the country before December 25.

The aim is to ensure the HMV drivers and their freight arrive at their destinations safely.

To do this Police have launched the national Operation Haumaru across the 12 policing districts – including the Bay of Plenty.

The national operation will see the Police Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit work with the New Zealand Transport Agency and other road policing partners and HMV operators and drivers to reduce the risk of crashes during a time

of increased HMV transport on our roads. Police’s CVIU manager Inspector Bruce O’Brien says with Christmas fast approaching the amount of freight that needs to be moved during a short period of time will increase dramatically “putting greater demands on both HMV drivers and vehicles”.

During Operation Haumaru there will be a highly visible and active Police presence on the roads throughout the country, particularly at high-risk times and locations.

“We will be focusing on the factors that contribute to serious crashes; speed, driving under the influence, distractions, fatigue and loss of control,” says Bruce.

“We will also be conducting vehicle inspections of HMV to ensure they are fit for purpose on our road.

“We want to keep both the drivers of these HMV safe, and also those who share the roads with them,” says Bruce.

Fat divers part 101 - the male version Greetings all male fat divers. I’m a safety first guy, which is why I specified male divers.

I see the boaties have drawn up a safety guide for boating, so I thought I would take the sea cucumber by the thorns and do one for diving.

The Police diving team says not checking your gear, getting fat, a she’ll be right attitude, and not being dive fit are the main reasons for getting you very dead, which is worse than just being mostly dead, or nearly dead.

A cursory glance in the general direction of your dive bag does not count as checking your gear either.

Glancing should be best left to those that do it best, like the wife; her glances can be colder than a frozen polar bear.

Right then, here are my top five tips.

Check your fat – yep, you fat divers that used to fit your wetsuits last summer know that fat floats and muscle sinks, and you will now need more lead to compensate for cake and beer, and possibly a new wetsuit as well. We at Tauranga Dive can help with both, and next week we have a special that comes with free fat jokes. Okay, all joking aside, diving with too much lead will get you deader than a three day old group of pukekos looking for their flatmate on a country road. Please come see us, use our dive pool, and get yourself correctly weighted after the winter layover. It’s free.

Empty your tank – either your tank is sitting in your garage ready to go with eight-month-old air, or it’s sitting here at the shop with eight-month-old air because you haven’t bothered to come collect it. Empty it. It’s only $5 to get it refilled and to answer your question, yes, air can and does go off sitting in a dive tank over time. Crack the valve and smell it; if it smells like an outpouring of grandad’s windy follow-up to yesterday’s curry, best get it re-filled.

Service that gear – this should be a no-brainer but

you would be surprised.

Get your gear serviced.

This comes under the ‘she’ll be right’ attitude.

There are crucial moving parts in your gear, and when they stop working at 30 metres and you start to see black filling your vision, which is death by the way, an apparition of myself will appear, make a few fat jokes, then ask you if you were insured, want me to look in on your family from time to time, make sure your soon to be widow has a new smarter partner etc. Yeah, that’s harsh, isn’t it?

Almost as harsh as removing yourself from the gene pool and denying your grandkids a knee for a horsy ride.

Dive fit – after hibernating during winter the male diver will emerge from his burrow a-yawning and a-scratching.

Don’t think you can just jump right on in and carry on where you left off. Being fatter, slower, and carrying excess lead, combined with being unfit, will get you into serious trouble lifting 15kg of scallops off the bottom. We know you would rather die than let go of the bag. Often it’s not just one thing, but a combination of them that will give you a very bad day. As we get older we are supposed to get smarter, but that’s sometimes not the case. You just can’t keep on ‘She’ll be righting’ everything, especially under the water. You can’t step off the boat and walk home, and you will die under the water if you get to blasé about things.

To recap: • Check your gear well before the day of the dive.

• Replace worn pieces of equipment and carry spares.

• Get your gear serviced each year.

• Take the first few dives easy until fitness builds up again.

• And as always, stay within your means, experience, and training.

Fat divers 102 - the female version sadly won’t be written, because there aren’t any.

Prep the boat, check your gear, know the rules Thousands of boats take to Bay of Plenty waterways every summer, and for the regional council, tasked with boating safety, it’s an incredibly busy time.

Bay of Plenty Harbourmaster Peter Buell says now is the time to dust off the safety gear and ensure it’s all in working order.

“This summer the Maritime Team will start promoting three simple messages that will save lives; prep your boat, check your gear,

and know the rules. No excuses for no lifejackets New Zealand has 20 to 30 boating fatalities a year, and around 66 per cent of these fatalities could probably have been avoided if lifejackets had been worn, says Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s safer boating officer Tony Pearce.

New research released by Maritime New Zealand suggests 51 per cent of New Zealanders took to the water in recreational boats last summer.

There are more boaties on the water than ever before, and as a result boating safety is increasingly important.

“What this increase means is there are more occasional boaties on the water in a variety of boats, paddleboards and other craft, with some not

understanding how to be safe, and going out without the right equipment.”

The report also indicates fewer people were wearing a lifejacket all the time they were on the water. Those most likely to always wear lifejackets were kayakers – 81 per cent. Least likely to always wear lifejackets were powerboat users – 52 per cent – down from 61 per cent in 2014. Powerboat users are the second largest group of boaties, 64 per cent of whom are male.

“It’s essential you have sufficient lifejackets of an appropriate size for everyone on board, and that boaties, particularly in smaller boats under six metres, always wear a lifejacket when they are out on the water.”

Tony says Bay of Plenty Regional Council has a ‘no excuses’ policy under which people failing to carry the required number of lifejackets on vessels out on the water are fined up to $200. “We’ll be carrying on with this approach as part of our support for Maritime NZ’s national initiative,” says Tony.

Why your choice of builder matters “Some building work needs licensed people on the job – so make sure you have the right builder for the work you’re doing” is the advice of Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s registrar, building practitioner licensing spokesperson Paul Hobbs.

“Spring marks the start of the busiest time of year for building practitioners. Some consumers may feel pressured to choose the first builder who says they can do the job, or the one with the cheapest quote. Building well can be very rewarding, but it’s often a different story if things don’t go to plan.”

Only Licensed Building Practitioners can do or supervise restricted building work.

This type of work tends to be on larger jobs that need a building consent and affect the structure or weathertightness of a home.

“These days, there are more consumer protections in place for homeowners, so if you follow the rules when you build or renovate, you’re more protected if things go wrong.”

As an example, when you employ LBPs you’re hiring people who’ve been assessed,

can be held more accountable for their work, and who have to keep their knowledge up to date to be relicensed.

Nationally, there are 19,755 LBPs with a carpenter’s licence – what most people think of as a “builder”.

There are also 10,282 LBPs with licences in design and other trades including roofing, external plastering and brick and blocklaying.

Paul’s top tips for hiring a builder or tradesperson are: check they’re licensed as an LBP if they’re doing restricted building work; ask for references; source several quotes; and get a contract, or at least an agreement in writing for smaller jobs.

A quick check of the government LBP register will tell you if someone’s licensed, or you can ask to see their LBP photo ID card.

What seems like a good idea or a quick fix at the outset could cost more in the long run. It pays to get the right people for the job.”

If you’re on a low income, you may be able to get a rebate to help pay your rates. A rebate of up to $610 is available based on your income, dependants

and rates bill. To find out if you qualify for a rates rebate, visit: www.ratesrebates.govt.nz You then apply to your local council for the rebate. When you complete the application form you’ll need to include your income details.

In general, if you’re receiving the standard rates of NZ Super, most councils won’t need any more information.

In some cases, they may need more details so Senior Services at the Ministry of Social Development will need to give you

information to pass on to them.

Keep the lid on your home ownership aspirations What can you afford and what can’t you afford? Your price range is a crucial first consideration in the search for a house.

Work out how much you could afford to borrow for a house. This will be influenced by a range of factors like income, living expenses, existing debt repayments and what you’ll have leftover to cover your loan payments.

A good rule of thumb is to keep home loan payments close to current rent payments, because you already know you can afford these. What’s flash, funky and fun - now What’s on offer, what do we like, what’s trendy and what can we afford?

Here are some global trends that residential designers and people planning a new home have in mind this year.

There’s been a move away from clear separation between indoor and outdoor spaces. It’s now more fluid, achieved with floor to ceiling retractable glass walls and screens and new flooring materials contributing to a convergence between inside and outside.

Outdoor spaces have become as important as the interior as owners seek areas for relaxing, socialising and de-stressing.

Inside there seems to have been a re-emphasis on the waterfall island where the

counter top falls off the edge and down the side, creating the appearance of a continuous surface. Home buyers and builders are showing a demand for these additions, made of granite, marble or wood.

In America troughs and spouts are the ‘in thing’. It seems Americans like splashy things; any water feature is great. Throw in a copper bathtub, especially a free-standing one, to add a twist to a myriad of designs.

In America. they are everywhere.

Money is being spent on staircases, the more intricate the better. They often feature glass accents, iron posts and tile designs. With all that

investment in the staircase, they are being moved to the front of the home, offering a unique design feature and becoming the focal point of the entrance way.

Board and batten walls, which once graced exteriors, are now very interior. It’s all about textures, apparently.

Mysteries of the house deposit New Zealand’s Quietest Heat Pumps

The deposit you require for a new house will depend on a range of factors like the type of property, the location and how much you can afford to repay.

You will often hear the need for a 20 per cent deposit but this isn’t always the case.

Some won’t need as much as 20 per cent and some

may even need more. That perception comes from the changes the Reserve Bank of New Zealand has made in recent years.

The RBNZ has restricted the amount of new residential lending a bank can provide to customers who have a loanto-value ratio of more than 80 per cent - that is a customer who has a deposit of less than 20 per cent of the home’s value.

So while you may need to

provide a deposit of at least 20 per cent you could still qualify for a loan with a lower deposit.

It’s best to discuss your situation with a lending specialists to determine the deposit amount your house purchase may actually require.

These deposit requirements apply if you’re going to live in the house. If it’s an investment property there may be other deposit requirements.

Spa pools and garden ponds exempt from fencing Parliament has passed new laws intended to better protect children from drowning in swimming pools, while also making the requirements more practical and enforceable.

The law change in 1987 requiring swimming pools to be fenced reduced the accidental drowning of children from more than 100 per decade to about 20 per decade.

Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith says the most important safety improvement in this Bill is the compulsory nationwide requirement for all swimming pools to be inspected and certified every three years.

A home safety checklist is a must-do The police have gone online to make our homes safer.

They’ve just launched a simple online checklist to improve safety and security, and are asking householders to complete the Home Safety Checklist. It takes only a minute or so by selecting simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ responses.

Relevant burglary prevention guidance is then emailed to the person seeking the information.

Police have always made the common-sense pointers available, but the online version makes it accessible to more people, and survey outcome means police can tailor their advice.

The scheme’s in line with the police focus on burglary prevention, and the aim to attend all house burglaries.

“We know house break-ins have a huge impact on individuals,

New guide available to removing asbestos WorkSafe has released guidance for managing and removing asbestos in the workplace, the first of its kind in New Zealand.

The Approved Code of Practice for the Management and Removal of Asbestos will help contribute to WorkSafe’s target of a 50 per cent reduction in asbestos-related disease by 2040.

Asbestos is the single biggest cause of deaths from workrelated disease. On average about 170 people die every year

from asbestos-related diseases.

Breathing in airborne asbestos fibres is a serious risk to health.

The fibres lodge in the lungs and may cause asbestosis, lung cancer or mesothelioma.

Designed for the web so it can be used on the go, the code was developed in consultation with unions, employer organisations, key stakeholders and the public.

“WorkSafe received the most responses for any guidance consultation in its history,”

says WorkSafe chief executive Gordon MacDonald.

“By working together with industry, we were able to establish a common view of what ‘good’ looks like. This lessens the need for businesses to obtain independent advice, which may reduce compliance costs.”

Previous asbestos guidance focused only on asbestos removal, while this code is applicable to a wider range of people exposed to asbestos.

The code sets out WorkSafe’s expectations for working safely with asbestos, and is designed for businesses that manage or control workplaces, carry out asbestos removal, or asbestosrelated work, and licensed asbestos assessors.

The code applies to landlords too, but not to home occupants doing DIY. The code is available online at www.construction.worksafe.govt. nz/guides

Updating Western Bay property values Property owners in the Western Bay may receive a visit from a valuer to assess the current land and capital value of your place for rating purposes.

Revaluations are done every two to three years by Western Bay of Plenty District Council to give a snapshot of property values district-wide so we can accurately assess the value of your property at a given time.

With such a surge in property values since our last revaluation in 2014, it’s really important to bring people up to date with the value of their property.

Valuers are out and about now and will be working across our district until the end of November. If no one is home when the valuer calls, a calling card will be left explaining the process to the property owner.

The valuers visiting your place are not employees of council; they are working for the independent valuation firm Landmass Technology and have been approved by the Office of the Valuer-General.

Just a reminder – permits are a must if you want to light an outdoor fire in the Western Bay. The restricted fire season started on 1 October and lasts until 1 April 2017.

This year’s permits are being issued by Pumicelands Rural Fire Authority – but the process of getting a permit is the same as usual.

Permits are free - Council processes them – all you need to do is contact us. A permit will last two weeks from the date of issue.

Revaluations are done every two to three years to give a District wide snapshot of land and capital values.

Results will be publicly notified from 12 December 2016.

WORKS STOP FOR EASE OF CHRISTMAS SHOPPING Council has revised the Te Puke town centre upgrade to ease Christmas shopping disruption. Work will stop from Christmas Float Parade Day, 3 December and resume in the second week of the New Year. The

only work to be done during the pre-Christmas period will be site maintenance and ensuring the town centre is kept safe and hazard-free.

Work will start in the New Year.

Touring Tauranga with awareness This Sunday Tauranga residents will be cycling around a city track in support of those who can’t.

Tour of Tauranga is back for its fifth year – encouraging people to cycle up awareness and funds for the Bay of Plenty Multiple Sclerosis Society on October 30.

BOP MS Society funding and events manager Rachelle Atherton says the event is the organisation’s major fundraiser – but it’s not just about raising funds.

“It’s been a little bit profitable for us which is extremely helpful, but it’s also about getting the word out about our society and the diseases – Multiple Sclerosis and Huntington’s disease – that we support.”

MS is a disease of the nervous system where the insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged.

Huntington’s disease is a genetic brain disorder that affects every area of a person, including uncontrolled movements. Both disorders have debilitating effects.

Rachelle says the event used to be a loop, starting at The Strand.

Now takes a new track, opened by Tauranga City Council, which starts at the Seventeenth Avenue skatepark near Historic Village – offering a new flavour to the event. “The track goes out towards The Lakes – so it provides a stunning cycle that people probably haven’t seen before,” says Rachelle.

Participants can sign up for a 20km course or a 10km family-friendly circuit. On-the-day registrations open from 7.30am, rides start at 9am, with prizegiving and spot prize draws at 12 noon. And there will be sausages, ice creams and hot drinks for sale too.

So people on bikes this Sunday can physically enjoy the tour while mentally, they can be thinking about those who can’t revel in such an activity.

“When participants are going around the track and struggle on a couple of the harder areas perhaps they will think about our members who live with MS or Huntington’s disease who don’t have it easy any day of their life,” says Rachelle. “It is good to be able to relate this message to the event”.

Tour of Tauranga is on October 30, from 8am-2pm.

Adults cost $20, children $5 and a family pass is $30.

Doctors’ petition for safer working hours The New Zealand Resident Doctors’ Association is providing the public with a direct way to show their support for resident doctors in their campaign for safer working hours in the form of an online petition.

“Throughout the Safer Hours campaign, members of the public have expressed support for our aims and asked what they can do to help resident doctors achieve safer hours,” says NZRDA national secretary Dr Deborah Powell.

“We thought a petition would be a simple yet powerful way for people to show their support. The Safer Hours Campaign is as much about the public as it is about resident doctors – their say is important too.”

Thousands of resident doctors went on strike last week for 48 hours to show how strongly they regard working safely, both for themselves and their patients.

“We would like to thank the New Zealand public for their support and invite them to sign this petition,” says Deborah.

Tauranga racing season to benefit breast cancer The Breast Cancer Foundation is set to benefit from this Saturday’s Pink Ribbon Race Day at Tauranga Racecourse.

While entry is free, patrons are being asked for a gold coin donation at the gate to support the great work the Breast Cancer Foundation does in our community.

The sponsors of each of the eight races will also have a chance

to win. They are invited to select a horse in the race they sponsor, and if that horse wins, Racing Tauranga will donate $200 to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

“I hope the people of Tauranga turn out to support this great cause,” says Tauranga Racing marketing and event co-ordinator Abbie Davie. “It’s going to be a fun day for all, with free entertainment for the kids.”

Sleep is the best stress management technique out there!

Manage your stress effectively I have a talk that I do to various audiences about stress management, which is a bit about what stress is. But it’s mostly about how to manage stress because it’s a part of our lives.

In that talk, I put up a picture of a person sleeping, and say: “This is the best stress management technique out there”.

We are awake all day and we should sleep all night. Well, for a good eight hours anyway.

I then ask the audience “who sleeps well?”

I’m hard pressed to recall a time where I spoke to a group and more than 50 per cent of them said they slept well relatively regularly.

In fact in most cases – especially when speaking in workplaces – very few people indicate they sleep well. Those who don’t sleep well usually say they either have trouble falling off to sleep, or they wake in the night and can’t go back to sleep.

It almost seems part of the human condition to have one of these two not-sleeping alternatives in our nightly routines.

But it is not part of the human condition.

We should sleep.

We should sleep well. If you do not sleep well, and can hardly remember

the last time you did, then a good wellness step for you – that you can classify as stress management if you like – would be figuring our

why you don’t sleep well.

If it’s because you have too busy a mind, then talk to someone about mindfulness, or breathing exercises,

or try yoga. If it is because you just don’t feel tired, look at what stimulants you eat and modify that – perhaps you exercise too close to sleep time?

There is no one answer to sleeping well. It is a highly individual process. It will take some trial and error to figure out a solution, but I encourage you to start the journey to find a solution. Think of how many more years of sleeping you have got left – makes sense to put some time aside to make sure you do sleep those years well in the future.

Give asparagus another go!

It’s that time of year – fresh asparagus is appearing in green grocers and supermarkets all over the place.

While it might not be the most appealing vegetable to some, there are some exciting ways to prepare it.

If you don’t like it rolled in buttered bread, try out the following ways – and give asparagus another go!

Get creative

For most of these tips it’s best to trim off the woody ends of the asparagus stalks, then get creating. And don’t overcook, or it will lose it distinct fl avour.

Purple asparagus is a bit sweeter than the green flowered version – so choose according to your use.

How about a fresh coleslaw? Shred the asparagus using a sharper peeler and mix with cabbage, carrot, fennel

bulb or radish. Tosh threw a fresh dressing and voila. Shredded asparagus is also good in vegetable fritters – and a cunning way to get the kids eating the humble vegetable.

Or hide it shredded in quiche, omelette or savoury muffins.

Egg match

Eggs and asparagus are a match made in heaven – try serving them blanched to dip in a runny boiled egg or underneath scrambled eggs – and add some salmon and cream cheese. Or even nestled under poached eggs they are divine!

You can crumb asparagus, which keeps it tender inside, and this is perfect to dip stalks into a salsa.

If you prefer au natural – try lightly boiling it and covering it with butter and lemon juice. Or toss in olive oil and sea salt and grill.

If you like salty flavours, try wrapping asparagus in bacon or pancetta and baking, and top afterwards with pan-fried scallops.

So trim the woody ends and get cooking.

But my favourite way hands down this season is deep fried in tempura batter. The flavour just seeps out beautifully. Yumm!

Have a say on food safety rules The Ministry for Primary Industries is calling on food businesses and others to have their say on changes to food safety rules.

The rules are part of the new Food Act, which came into effect in March.

It introduced a risk-based approach to managing food safety, by setting different rules for higher and lower risk businesses, and putting more emphasis on what people do to keep food safe.

MPI food and regulatory policy director Fiona Duncan says as the new law is rolled out, MPI will monitor and evaluate how things are going and listen to feedback from businesses and others.

“These proposals make improvements where needed, to make sure the new law works as intended. We propose reducing requirements for some lower risk businesses, giving them fewer

records to keep and fewer procedures to follow.”

Another proposal makes it easier for businesses to organise their first food safety check, known as a verification.

“We have also reviewed old food safety laws still in effect, and are revoking those that are no longer necessary, while keeping the parts we still need.”

Consultation includes other minor changes to help the new law work more smoothly. Businesses can find full details on the MPI website, along with several ways they can have their say, from filling in a quick survey to making a formal submission.

MPI is also working with councils to run free Food Act workshops.

These give businesses a chance to ask questions about the new law and suggest improvements.

Local Nightrider’s offer to help A local ‘Nightrider’ offered accommodation to some very lost, very wet, and very sleepy Aucklanders recently.

Nathan Little, who is also known as Nightrider, works at a Z petrol station on Domain Rd in Papamoa.

Recently, an Auckland Mum and her two children had gone on an adventure, which included spending a night tenting in Papamoa. They forgot to check the weather forecast.

After failing to find the after-hours phone for the holiday park, the soggy trio turned to Z Papamoa for help.

Nathan helped the family contact local places to stay, but none had any vacancies.

Nathan then offered to provide accommodation as soon as his shift was over.

With the help of Top 10 Holiday Park manager Bex Crosby, Nathan eventually found the family a safe haven for the night.

Numbers of those 85-plus to triple

New Zealand’s population of those aged 85-plus is expected to more than triple in the next 30 years, according to Statistics NZ. The government department’s projections show growing numbers of older people in coming decades.

The number of people aged 85 years and older will more than triple, from about 83,000 in 2016, to between 270,000 and 320,000 in the next 30 years.

Those aged 65 years and older will roughly double, from about 700,000 now to between 1.3 and 1.5 million in 2046.

Overall population growth is expected to slow in the longer term as the population ages and the gap between births and deaths narrows. The rate of population growth may halve to less than one per cent in the 2030s, says Statistics NZ senior demographer Kim Dunstan.

A whopping 80 climbs before her 80th Climbing the Mount 80 times is something most locals could manage in their lifetime – but when you’re 79 and trying to squeeze them all in before your 80th birthday – well, that’s nigh impossible, isn’t it?

Not for Raewyn Eagles. The Mount Maunganui retiree has already climbed Mauao 70 times, and her birthday isn’t till December.

When The Weekend Sun spoke to her, she’d just returned from her

fourth climb that morning.

“I’m turning 80 this year, and I thought I could do it,” says Raewyn. “I grew up in the Mount – it’s always been special to me.”

She says she goes up via the stairs, because that’s the shortest route.

So, how does a 79-year-old woman manage such an impressive feat? By keeping active all the time.

“I belong to Baywave Gym, and I go there probably three or four times a week,” she says.

“I’ve also belonged to a tramping club, so I have a basic level of fitness. I walked the Rotorua Marathon about two years ago too.

“I’m just one of those lucky

people who is fit and well, even at this age,” she laughs.

In her youth Raewyn taught school at Omanu, while working as a cashier at the picture theatre.

After saving enough money, she went to the UK on her OE and married an Englishman.

“I stayed there for many years, before moving back to live in the Mount in 1993.”

Now she’s where she feels most at home. If you see her setting a blistering pace up those stairs, give her a wave and a smile – she’ll probably be on her second run of 80.

Believing their own spin Re: The Black Caps: Ongoing problems still persist with inflated egos, and worst of all players even believe their own spin and it all makes one want to find a corner to hide in. It’s about time these perennial underperformers at test match level recognised with their paucity of talent, technical skills and other deficiencies including a failure to face reality with only one team game plan that this is a catalyst for failure. Most alarmingly, however, they lack bottle and fight when the going gets tough; and after all, it is how you lose that is often so important.

We hear the usual hype every test cricket series - as opposed to One Day Internationals - and I for one am over it. This bunch simply don’t know how to perform or

win test matches when it matters - unless they fluke it - and they deserve all the public flak they get for regular sub-par performances.

There is probably only one batsman and a couple of bowlers of international calibre in the team, the new captain with poor recent performances seems bereft of a game plan and looks shell-

shocked, as does the coach.

Cricketers of yesteryear, who were never mollycoddled or paid obscene sums of money to underperform, must shake their heads in disbelief.

We said it, and the media were less than friendly; eventually the red party realised we’re right – they’ve adopted half of our policies. Even the grass-coloured party has realised we’re right.

The poor kid. She’s reported to have had her finger on the emergency stop button, four people died and she will have to live with it forever.

Why on earth was this allowed to happen? Was it simply a case of cheap labour, was it negligence, was it maintenance issue; was it a combination of all three?

Now four families are grieving and a young employee will be hellishly blaming herself.

When your kids go to work you expect them to come home with dollars and the satisfaction of earning, not with a conscience damaged beyond repair.

And for the rest of us adrenalin junkies who pay good money for a thrill, we expect people of experience to be in charge, we expect machinery to work, we expect to bring our kids home alive.

I’d just like see some accountability come out of all this – not to go through a legal process where we see a company sliding out of its responsibility.

To date we’ve only seen the laying of some flowers and platitudes for the TV cameras.

Our condolences to the families of those killed.

But what the hell can we offer the eighteen year old? I hope all wrap-around support that is on offer.

And the truck crashes continue… was when a double wheel and axle came off a truck-and-trailer unit and bounced over the roof of our car - and the driver of the truck never noticed the loss and kept going. I was in too much of a shock to turn and chase the bugger.

When is something going to be done about the standard of driving of these monsters on our narrow roads?

I know there are many reports about how good and careful truck drivers are, yet these crashes continue.

Time after time at the Moffat Rd roundabout in Bethlehem we have to brake sharply to avoid a head on with a truck that teams straight through the roundabout without a glance.

The town has been chucked more than $1m to do up Jellicoe St – plus put in new plantings, rubbish bins, refurbish light stands, seating, bike stands. And this is all at no cost to ratepayers!

Katikati would love to be wad of cash to do up its main street – and it would definitely not complain about having one lane for through-traffic and another as a reversing lane.

Currently reversing into State Highway 2 traffic onto Katikati’s main street is dangerous – for drivers and pedestrians.

Sounds like this councillors and the ‘boys club’ of Te Puke are scared of change and possibly think their trucks own the town.

Get to know others at Ethkick Do you love football? Want to learn other cultures?

Then Ethkick 2016 might be for you.

The event is a five-a-side football tournament hosted by Multicultural Tauranga and the New Zealand Police, with support from Papamoa Football club.

It’s on Saturday, November 5 from 9am3pm at Gordon Spratt Reserve, Papamoa.

Entry is $40 per team, with a maximum of eight players aged 16-plus.

Multicultural Tauranga’s Ewa Fenn says the event is a way for migrants, especially men, to get to know each other.

“The idea is to involve more men from the migrant community with our organisation.

Quite often at other events we run, such as language classes, there are many ladies, because the men are working.

to get to know each other better.” It’s also an opportunity for locals to interact with the migrant community. “All our events are for everybody. It will be a relaxed, fun atmosphere – we don’t require anybody to be a professional footballer. If you can kick a ball, you can join in.”

The tournament’s winning team goes to the national competition in Wellington. All tournaments are sponsored by NZ Police, which is providing referees and a team of their own. Nature and a really neat challenge If you feel like getting amongst nature and challenging yourself, Whakatane Athletic and Harrier Club has the perfect event.

Julian’s Berry Farm and Cafe Tois Challenge is organised by the Whakatane Athletic and Harrier Club. The Tois Challenge 18km course follows the ‘Nga Tapuwai o Toi’ track, which literally means ‘In the Footsteps of Toi’, after the Maori chief Toi who ruled the area some 800 years ago, says the club’s Harriers captain Dianne Bulled. “The trail twists up and down steep coastal hills and along two beautiful beaches, through stunning bush, up and down hundreds of steps, eased by stunning views of the

sparkling Pacific Ocean and distant islands.”

Until the very last dash to the line, the Tois Challenge remains unrelentingly hilly. But your mind is taken off the tough terrain by many inspirational signs along the way, great camaraderie with other participants, and the thought of juicy strawberries everyone receives at the finish line, compliments of Julian’s Berry Farm and Cafe.

There is also a shorter option of the Robinson Law 6km fun walk or run. This goes up through bush known locally as the ‘Birdwalk’, and down the walkway in the gorge. All races start 9am on November 20 from Rex Morpeth Park, Whakatane.

’Twas the night before Christmas…

Bethlehem Baptist’s annual ‘A Night Before Christmas’ event is coming up!

This year’s event – which is only seven weeks away – will be held at the Bethlehem College front fields to allow for growth, says event organiser Luisa Schroder.

Held on Saturday, December 17, with the wet weather day being December 18, this year’s ‘A Night Before Christmas’ is set to be bigger and better than ever.

Luisa says this year their expecting a turnout of 10,000-plus people, and Bethlehem Baptist have al-ready started organising the event.

With drama, comedy, dance, a Christmas message, giveaways, entertainment, bouncy castles, food, drink and more, ‘A Night Before Christmas’ will have something for everyone.

“People gather with families, friends, neighbours bringing picnics, blankets, chairs and candles to expe-rience a night of carols by candlelight,” says Luisa.

Music of different genres and children’s choir will also be on display for the evening, as well as an array of sing-along Christmas carols.

Luisa says this year’s event marks 20 years – with the first ‘A Night Before Christmas’ being held in 1996 on the banks of the Wairoa River with 150 people.

This year ‘A Night Before Christmas’ will be held at the larger grounds of Bethlehem College.

And the event has certainly grown, with the crowd last year reaching 8000-plus attendees.

The event is a drug-and-alcohol free, with professional security, portaloos, a 40m2 screen, and best of all – free entry.

recording songs for an album called ‘The Barony of Carbery’. Among the various musicians were Jed Dawkins, James Bos, Derek Toner, Brian Franks, Denise Hyde and Tara Watson.

The album is not due for airing until mid-2017, during which time Brendan intends to play live extensively, but the first single was released in October and can be found at ApolloSteamTrain.com After the recording sessions Brendan set out to find musicians for a permanent live band. He wanted to create a core three-piece that is able to perform in both

Apollo Steam Train. acoustic and electric settings with the idea of boosting the band with session musicians when required. In August the line-up came together: Brendan on guitar, Les Robinson on drums and Ian Clark on bass.

Now they’re celebrating at Totara Street next Saturday, November 5, along with two well-established Tauranga bands. Brilleaux, Tuner and Apollo SteamTrain will each play a one-hour set, which should be a whole bunch of fun. Tickets are $20 from Eventfinda.

A birthday party

But perhaps a week is too long to wait for a burst of musical entertainment.

If so, there are a couple of things on this weekend at the Mount that might be of interest. They’re taking place this Saturday night, October 29, and just round the corner from each other. You could easily check out both if you’re so inspired.

First up it’s Totara St again, and another celebration, this time their first birthday. Damn fine! Yes, a year ago the performance venue was officially christened Totara Street. The venue had been running for roughly a year before that but to celebrate this anniversary ‘The Sequence’ will be held on Saturday, October 29. It’s at 11 Totara Street, Mount Maunganui – hence the name.

They’ve assembled a slew of local bands, a little bit of everything, as a ‘thank you’ for audiences who’ve made the venue so successful. It’s a nonticketed event, with a koha entry on the door going to the artists that perform.

And those artists are... The Deeds, Regan Perry and the Evolutionaries (great name!), John Michaelz and the Usual, and K Holla.

A new band

I could spend a whole column on this show (and would if it hadn’t kinda sneaked up on me and my mouldering

brain) as all the musicians have been doing interesting stuff – particularly Reagan Perry, who’s achieved some amazing things. But let me just introduce you to the newest of the bands.

This is the debut gig for John Michaelz and The Usual. At least this ‘Usual’.

John gigged with a band of that name a couple of years back but then went to live in Whangarei. This is the first gig with the band he’s assembled since returning earlier this year. It comprises Bruce Rolands (Brilleaux) on guitar, bass player Pat Hawkins – both of whom were with John many years ago in The Stone Babies – and drummer Nick Ririnui. Their music is, from what I’ve heard, modern guitar rock with a hint of Australia’s Cruel Sea in the grooves. As I say, it’s a koha on the door and things kick off at 8pm.

B-Side back in town

If you want a break from that, at 9pm B-Side Band play their first gig in the Bay for several months just round the corner at the Mount Social Club.

Admission is free.

The left-field rockabilly revivalists were up in Auckland a couple of months ago where they featured on Face TV’s ‘Rockin’ the Planet’ show with Shane and opened for a reunited Human Instinct at the Kings Arms Tavern. The latter gig was recorded and is currently being mixed at The Boatshed Studio for release in the New Year. watusi@thesun.co.nz

Admiring Helen Kelly’s kindness What

do we value?

Over a two week period we have had three celebrations in New Zealand

Helen was a life-long unionist and more recently, medical cannabis crusader. She died aged 52. I didn’t know Helen personally but her run-in with Sir Peter Jackson brought her to my attention. Since then I have come to respect and admire her passion and commitment for workers’ rights and social justice.

The other night I heard Helen’s take on Donald Trump. She said that Donald Trump lacks kindness. Of all the things she could say of this man, it was that he lacked kindness. Wow! I don’t think I am always as civil as that!

I don’t know where Helen stood on faith, whether she believed in

Jesus Christ or not, but she held the Christian value and passion for caring for the vulnerable in society. In a Radio NZ item on October 14 her son Dylan Kelly said of his mother had “boundless kindness and energy and time for other people”. Isn’t it wonderful that her son could say this of her?

Jesus said that to offer a glass of water to someone in need was to offer it as to Him. I admired Helen’s compassion and need to examine myself to see if I have such concern, kindness, strength and passion to serve others. What a difference might it make if I ask Jesus to do this through me?

May Helen rest in peace, and may God comfort her family.

Firstly, there was Labour Day when we had a day off to commemorate the First Labour Day in 1890, heled to celebrate the struggle for an eight-hour working day.

On Monday, October 31 we have Halloween, when there is a growing trend in New Zealand to follow the overseas craze of celebrating all things related to occult and demon worship as well as death, blood and scaring people and extracting sweets out of people by threatening them with bad luck.

A few days after that we celebrate Guy Fawkes Day, when we set off fireworks to celebrate the unsuccessful attempt in England to blow up the parliament to assassinate King James I in 1605 to express dissatisfaction with his leadership It is interesting to see what we choose to celebrate.

To me it is great that we celebrate a good law that allows family time, although it seems to me our current society has given away much of what was gained by those early reformers by working long hours and always being on call.

It seems rather pointless to celebrate something as irrelevant as a gunpowder plot of 411 years ago, and worse still to celebrate things as evil and wrong as Halloween.

The Bible says in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

The bible encourages us to put our energies into celebrating the good and avoiding the evil.

For a smile and a life saved It’s an image seared into her memory. A wee boy, probably a new entrant, about five years old, his legs trussed in heavy metal callipers, struggling over a school field to a waiting ambulance.

“I can remember as if it was yesterday,” says Sally Morrison. In fact it was 60 years ago.

As a nurse of more than 40 years Sally witnessed a lot of sickness, pain and suffering.

But it’s the wee boy that touched, captured and then inspired her.

“I watched him every day as he struggled.

He was only little and I was only little and I wondered what his problem was, why was he like that and not like the rest of us?”

Poliomyelitis – polio or infantile paralysis – is the highly infectious viral disease affecting young children. “Sod of a thing,” says Sally.

She doesn’t know the wee boy’s name or anything else about him. But Sally Morrison knows he was the catalyst to confront the scourge herself, to help finish what science started 28 years, to wipe polio out once and for all.

“I’m not thinking dollars, I’m thinking kids and I’m thinking 45,000 kids,” ponders Sally.

But even so dreams like that come with a price tag.

And Sally needs more than $5000, for starters, to achieve that level of immunisation.

So the furniture can go. “I’d rather give it away than look at it and think how nice but not need it.”

After downsizing – moving from a sprawling 90-yearold home in early Devonport Rd to an apartment at the Mount – Sally had excess furniture. “I went from a property that could accommodate to a property that can’t.”

And in the problem lay the solution. Forty-plus pieces of her furniture will be put to the hammer to help pay for the vaccinations. “Mainly period, not saying they’re antique, not modern modern.” From bespoke mahogany dining suite with eight chairs, a personal favourite, to outdoor furniture and everything in between.

“There are a few sentimental pieces that I don’t want to be rid of but it’s for a good cause.”

And for every dollar Sally raises the international body of her Rotary Club will chip in $2. She’ll have $15,000. Three kids immunised for every dollar spent, so that’s 45,000 kids safe from poliomyelitis. The work will be done.

“This is exactly the reason I joined Rotary,” says the nurse, businesswoman and philanthropist.

Rotary on a world scale has been fighting polio for 30 years. And since it launched its Global Polio Eradication Initiative back in the 1985 the incidence has fallen 99.9 per cent – from 350,000 a year to just 26 this year. They are in Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan – just three counties out of 120.

And Nigeria has just reported another three cases after being incident free for a while.

“Having a disabled child must be difficult anywhere in the world let alone those countries. It must be hell. So if we can prevent just one child contracting polio which impacts the lives of the whole family and the whole community, then we should do it. And we can do it.”

The thrust to eliminate those remaining pockets of polio will start Morrison’s in the basement of Sally Morrison’s apartment building.

Hundreds of street machinelovers gathered at Coronation Park last weekend to revere the beautiful feats of technology found in the hot rods at Wheels on Mainstreet.
