AWOL Summer and Jafaffect Vents Solar Panels Satellite Dishes Heating

We have some bad news for you this week. We’ve had to cancel summer.

It’s not been an easy decision, but made necessary by lack of resources, namely heat. There’s also been complaints about a shortage of calm, balmy days and rumours of low sea temperatures. Excessive wind has topped off the list of grumbles.

The committee offered to trade next Spring some of the wind in exchange for a few degrees of temperature, but this was turned down, citing some sort of historical disagreement between those seasons; due to summer running overtime in recent years; and spring being a bit miffed that summer this week used one of spring’s late season snowfalls, without consultation.

Meanwhile, autumn and winter have conspired to “spring” an early appearance, after spotting confusion in the seasonal market and seizing the opportunity to launch a merger, calling themselves “Wintumn” and plan to roll in early in March with one long, cold season and hang around till next Labour Weekend.

Summer’s shareholders have had enough and pulled their investment, packed up their tents (the ones that weren’t blown over), and gone back to work to save for the Wintumn ski season instead.

Now the politicians are getting hot under the collar about the summer going AWOL. United Future leader Peter Dunne wants a national petition to ask the country whether school summer holidays should be moved to start mid-February and finish in March.

Following a wet, cold January, Mr Dunne is reported as saying the motivation for changing the summer holiday period was simple.

“For a country like New Zealand that prides itself on being an outdoors country, it’s a bit silly to have a summer period when people can’t go to the beach because it’s too cold.”

We sympathise with Mr Dunne. The wind must have played havoc with his hair.

suitably attired in creative hats. I’ve been a fan of hats ever since I got ears. Aside from shading the ears, hats are useful for keep them reigned in, to stop uncontrollable flapping in the incessant sou-westers.

Some important features of hats include a top and sides; lights in the front for night navigation and emergencies; chin straps to keep them in place during relentless souwesters; and provision for accessories.

That may include fishing flies, flowers, bird feathers, solar fans and radiation deflectors.

So to celebrate the Bay’s creative hat population, we’re awarding ‘Hat of the Week’ to the most novel and useful headgear.

This week’s Featured Hat was seen downtown, atop a cruise ship passenger.

He kindly allowed us to photograph the ingenious straw and foil reflector masterpiece. It also folds flat, for ease of transport and packing.

In the last 20 years Dunners’ inmates have increased by about 6200 while Tauranga’s inhabitants have rocked up an extra 48,400.

So we’re either begatting at an exhausting pace, or we’re not paying enough attention to the waifs and strays climbing over the city gates.

Popular belief is that the ‘Auckland effect’ means a streaming influx of people relocating to escape traffic, crowds, rocketing real estate levels…so they came to Tauranga and now we have traffic, crowds and rocketing real estate levels.

This would be more appropriately named the ‘Jafaffect’.

Raise the drawbridge

Some people will tell you it’s good for the region to experience growth. But there are some of us who know it isn’t such a great idea, especially if the infrastructure isn’t in place to cope with the growth.

It’s clear that Tauranga isn’t geared up for growth. Just take the Welcome BayTurret Rd case. Still a single lane each way, despite it being obvious for 50 years that Welcome Bay was going to go nuts.

The northern outskirts of Tauranga are heading the same way. We haven’t learnt from half a century of head-scratching about how to expand the arterials in time to keep pace with the traffic.

So the only solution is to stop the influx.

Convince people that Dunedin has better weather, wild natural beauty and a rockstar economy, warmer climate (fuelled by burning couches), and you can still get a free park right outside the shop you want to visit.

That our sun and sand is over-rated, causes skin cancer and a rash in your boardshorts.

You’d be happier down south in your hipster pointy shoes and a splash of tartan, enjoying the cultural treasures of Dunedin’s heritage and history.

One thing the burgeoning Tauranga population has done, is keep SunLive statistics climbing through the roof. At least the newbies arriving here have a great news service at their fingertips. And it’s locally owned and operated.

Be fair, keep clear His image is peppered with bullet holes. One of the shots passed clean through his left eyebrow. ”I am trying not to read anything into it,” says Paul Curry, who has for 47 years been in a wheelchair.

And whose bullet-riddled picture is up there on the experimental mobility parking restriction sign.

“Hopefully it doesn’t tell us anything about peoples’ attitude to the disabled,” says Paul. But it might. Because if Tauranga’s able-bodied population didn’t abuse the city’s 133 mobility carparks, if they were more respectful and socially responsible to the city’s 400 mobility park permit-holders and hadn’t incurred 50 infringement notices worth $150 each in the last six months there might not be a need for the new signs.

And there might not be a need for Paul to be a poster boy and champion for social change.

“But I am big enough and old enough to do it.”

The number of violations is just representative of the problem because the Tauranga City Council parking wardens can’t be everywhere all the time.

And they don’t have jurisdiction over mobility parks outside supermarkets and malls.

“It’s a pretty selfish,” says the city’s top traffic cop, Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

And that’s why at $150 it’s an expensive misdemeanor.

“It’s perceived as a particularly inconsiderate act.”

to park directly outside wherever they are going,” says Stuart Goodman, who is Tauranga City Council’s bylaws and parking man. “It’s mean-spirited, you are depriving someone of a muchneeded facility, someone who really needs it.”

Someone like Paul, who is paralysed from the chest down after an accident serving his country with the navy.

“I didn’t quite get to Vietnam because a 400 pound antisubmarine marine mortar came loose from a loading rope, landed on top of me breaking my back in six places.” He’s never asked for concessions. “Never been

on the benefit nor ACC, been a chief executive for a couple of government departments; tended to my own needs.”

But for the people who the permits are designed to assist, like Paul, they are an absolute blessing.

“They make a helluva difference to our lives and accessing our community. And while some people obviously see us as a lesser species, there are a lot of disabled people contributing tremendously to society and deserve respect.”

Internationally unaffordable An international survey of housing affordability ranks Tauranga among the top unaffordable cities in the world for house prices.

Housing in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Melbourne and Honolulu is more affordable than Tauranga, according to the Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey.

Auckland is even worse than Tauranga on the affordability scale, being the fourth least affordable city on the planet – beaten only by Hong Kong, Sydney and Vancouver.

Fed up with freedom campers Tauranga City Council has received several complaints recently over freedom campers flouting the rules.

Among the sites popular with freedom campers is Nikau Crescent in Mount Maunganui, which has been subjected to litter by careless overnighters.

Freedom camping is permitted in Nikau Crescent, but vehicles must be parked on the grass road berm, and must be self-contained.

TCC bylaws and parking team leader Stuart Goodman says the majority of complaints are around the number of freedom campers at each site.

An enforcement officer investigated a complaint regarding Nikau Crescent – and arrangements were made to clear the site of any litter.

A couple of days later Martin and his team had come up with a solution.

On Tuesday council contractors began work at the roundabout, which includes widening the footpath by 1m and installing safe hit posts at the apex of the roundabout’s corner.

“It’s awesome that something’s been done.

Normally, you see things and complain about them but nothing happens,” says Carmen.

“Last week’s incident was the last straw for me and I would have felt really bad if someone had been hit and I’d done nothing about it.” Martin anticipates the work

Any excuse not to build roads Tauranga’s use of public transport is frequently panned by experts and politicians as if by using a car we’re guilty of some mortal sin against the community and the planet.

We, the great unwashed, are to be punished without further road upgrades on Hewletts Rd or four lanes on 15th Ave until we’re made to walk, cycle, or ride the bus like good socialists to work, the shops, or out for dinner.

Really? A walk from Papamoa to Tauranga takes three-and-one-quarter hours. Riding a bike up to an hour, and a bus will take you one-hour-and fiveminutes. Experts compare our transport habits as a tiny city of 128,000 to European capitals or 8.5m Londoners, with an underground since 1863, and we’re meant to feel ashamed?

But Tauranga isn’t a city hundreds of years old where owning a carriage was a luxury for the nobility and all journeys had to be made on foot.

We’re developing in an age of individual freedom; we are not confined to inner-city slums like our ancestors – we’re free to travel outside the CBD and have a backyard to raise our families.

Police out in force this weekend With two long weekends approaching for Tauranga residents, it pays to remember to drive safely and to the conditions.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says drivers can expect to see more Police on the road.

For Ian, the most important thing is for drivers to keep their speeds down and not treating the speed limit as a target.

“But when you add factors such as heavy traffic, wet roads, or poor visibility, then speeds need to be reduced.”

Ian recommends planning ahead for the long weekend, to avoid delays and frustration.

Knocked from pram; no charges Police are not laying any charges in relation to an incident where a baby was knocked out of a pushchair in Tauranga on Sunday, January 22.

A woman was pushing her two-year-old son in a pushchair across the road at the Grenada St/Girven Rd intersection, when the child was knocked out of the pushchair onto the road.

A Police spokeswoman says there were very minor injuries and both parties have been spoken to and no charges will be laid.

The mother and child were both treated at the nearby medical centre, The Doctors Bayfair, for scrapes and bruises.

“When we first received complaints, about 18 months ago, we removed a central traffic island on Papamoa Beach Rd. “This was undertaken to give truck drivers more room to manoeuvre when turning right out of Golden Sands Drive,” says Martin.

“As we know now, this didn’t fully resolve the matter hence these further works being required.”

The Papamoa woman felt like she was swimming upstream after complaining several times to the Tauranga City Council about trucks cutting the corner and driving up on the footpath at the roundabout at Golden Sands Drive and Papamoa Rd. After encountering another truck cutting the corner at the roundabout early last week, Carmen took to Facebook to vent her frustrations and to warn others in the area to be on the lookout when walking near the roundabout.

“It’s is the third time I have encountered a truck coming up on the footpath! We have notified the council several times, they did adjust the roundabout but it hasn’t solved this safety issue. Only a matter of time before a pedestrian death!” reads Carmen’s Facebook post.

“One day while on my bike I had to stop and move into the centre of the roundabout while the truck manoeuvred forward and back to get around into Golden Sands. Yep, must be very alert there.”

The current national MX1 motocross champion will arrive in the Manawatu on the weekend of January 28-29 as the firm favourite to win what is regarded as the biggest stand-alone event on the Kiwi racing calendar – the Hondasponsored New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville.

2007, and then seven years later in 2014 – and he’d like nothing better than to win once more and become a rare three-time winner of the iconic Woodville event when he lines up at this season’s 56th annual running.

But that’s easier said than done – he was denied that honour last year for a second consecutive season, deprived both times by Australian visitors.

Cooper was stopped in 2015 by Australian Kirk Gibbs and in 2016 it was another Australian, New South Welshman Dean Ferris, who rose up to claim the main trophy on debut at Woodville.

Cooper had lived up to his star billing when he again won the MX1 class at Woodville last year, but it was a case of

Cooper winning the battles but losing the war, with Ferris leading from start to finish in the gruelling Invitation Feature Race and becoming the 28th different main event winner at Woodville since the inaugural running in 1961.

Cooper won the MX1 class last year with a 1-2-2 score-card, finishing the day four points ahead of Ferris, and Otago’s just-turned 20-year-old Courtney Duncan stunned the testosterone-fuelled MX2 250cc class to snatch that class win with an outstanding 1-3-2 score-line.

Two days’ racing at Woodville caters for minis, juniors, women, veterans and seniors, with the novelty river race on Sunday always a crowd-pleaser.

This blue government, in 2008 and again in 2011, promised to upgrade 15th Ave/Turret Rd, with double lanes each way, but now are trying to wash their hands of those promises.

New Zealand First puts transport as one of the biggest issues this city faces today.

We have the solutions to this growing problem, and look forward to implementing them after the election.

Aerial attraction takes off The only place in this part of the world where people can pay for a joyride in a military jet aircraft is Tauranga.

And the jet is a former Czech Airforce L39 Albatross, which is now open for business.

Owner Craig Mossman says they have just completed at 18-month Civil Aviation process enabling them to do joy rides so people can go for a ride in an actual jet fighter. The jet, in its new paint scheme, attracted a lot of interest at the recent airshow at Tauranga Airport.

And Craig says his team has come out of the show with a few forward bookings.

“There’s a huge market in the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States because New Zealand is the only country in the world that has this. It’s called a Part 115 Operation where people can actually go for a ride in a military jet and pay money to do it.

“Everywhere else in the world it’s illegal. You are just not allowed to do it.

“It’s quite exciting the amount of interest in it, which is really neat,” says Craig.

His crew Jayden Mossman, Cole Mossman, Paul Holloway, Craig Mossman and Scott Wagstaff.

“We’ve got two more jets in the states; we’re looking at bringing one of them out depending on the demand, maybe towards the end of the year.”

The paint scheme is fashioned after the Czechoslovakian Airforce low-visibility camouflage paint scheme – with a black tail to tart it up.

“We have the Czech roundel on the tail. It’s normally red, white, blue but they do it grey to match their low viz scheme.

“It’s all very, as it was, in the airforce inside. You hop in and you are sitting on the ejection seat – which we have actually had to disarm. We are not allowed to have it live. But it’s all original otherwise.”

A beach battle unfolds More than 800 athletes from 31 clubs throughout NZ – including Olympians – will thrash the Mount’s sand and surf this weekend as the 2017 Eastern Regional Championships unfold.

In the thick of it will be 75 athletes from the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service – the third largest group in the competition behind Red Beach’s 88 and Orewa’s 79 – learning from their efforts how they are tracking on the way to the nationals.

And rivalry will be tough – the championships draws in some of the country’s top surf lifesavers including a number of Olympians, Black Fins and NZ representatives.

Mount club member Lisa Carrington will join fellow Olympian Marty McDowell representing Titahi Bay and former Olympian-turned-coach Steve Ferguson representing Piha.

Four of the 2016 World Lifesaving Champion Black Fins – Wainui’s Laura Quilter, Mount Maunganui’s Olivia Eaton, and

Omanu’s Devon Halligan and Max Beattie will also join the line up alongside eight of the 12 Junior Black Fins.

They include the Mount’s Hamish Miller, Zac Reid, Libby Bradley and Daniel Barron with fellow Black Fins from other clubs, Hannah Williams, Javon McCallum, Jamie Gedye and Alaynah Bettany.

Other Western Bay of Plenty surf lifesaving clubs competing include Omanu Beach with 43 athletes, Papamoa fielding 38, and Waihi Beach with 23.

Eastern Regional Championships has long been one of the biggest surf lifesaving carnivals, second only to the nationals, NZ Surf Lifesaving Championships in early-March. Events include beach sprint, beach flags, run swim run, surf race, board race, ski race,

diamond race, ironman, 2km beach run, beach, board and ski relays, board rescue and taplin with the action beginning 8am tomorrow.

Surf boats and canoes will also form part of the racing, with more than 70 crews taking part in short and long course races.

Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service head coach John Bryant says this weekend is the perfect test for his athletes to know how they are tracking for the nationals.

“It’s part of our build-up to the nationals and the Australian title – we train year-round and everything builds to this event, then the next six weeks to nationals.”

This week the judging panel for the TrustPower Photographic Exhibition faced the monumental task of examining and scrutinising more than 1740 photographs in order to select the 13 best images.

But it’s an assignment that’s produced more beaming smiles than headaches for the 10-judge panel, which has been left thoroughly delighted by the high calibre of entries into the inaugural competition.

“We’ve seen some absolutely stunning photography across the four different categories and it’s been so pleasing to discover the level of talent we have living her in the Bay of Plenty,” says TrustPower marketing communications manager Carolyn Schofield.

“I’m not a photographer, but part of my role as marketing communications manager is choosing visual material with the most impact, so I’ve been looking for arresting images which made

me stop and produced a response in me instantly.”

With the title ‘Our Place To Shine’, the competition invited amateur and professional photographers to submit images showcasing the Western Bay across four categories: Our People, Land and Sea, Our Heritage, and Emotion.

The category that attracted the most entries was ‘Land and Sea’ and this has come as no surprise to Carolyn.

“Given where we live and our natural environment, both the land and sea are one of the key aspects which attract people to the Bay in the first place, so the number of entries received didn’t come as a surprise at all.”

The panel has now selected the 13 winners – the first and second place winners in each category, the excellence and merit award recipients for the best young and student photographers, plus the overall supreme winner – which will be announced at a special ceremony tonight.

Then on Saturday the 13 winning photographs, which have been enlarged to into 1m high

x 1.5m wide prints, will go on display in an outdoor exhibition on The Strand that will run up until April 9.

Carolyn says they can’t wait to unveil the exhibition to the community and is encouraging everyone to head down to The Strand and check the display out.

“The level of talent out there in the community is absolutely amazing and we can’t wait to share it with the community.”

Bay of Plenty bikers gearing up for challenge The Aotearoa Bike Challenge in the Bay of Plenty is all about numbers. As well as the joys and benefits of riding a bike.

To date 90 local companies and organisations, 723 people and 221 new riders have registered to take 2062 rides across 39,824km. Those numbers will rise exponentially by the time the first ever Aotearoa Bike Challenge begins throughout New Zealand next Wednesday, February 1.

The programme aims to get people on bikes – and pledging to take one 10-minute bike ride at some

point during the month of February is all it takes to participate.

“Whether you are new to cycling or have some experience, the challenge provides riders with support and motivation in the knowledge 6500 other New Zealanders will be doing exactly the same,” says New Zealand Transport Agency cycling manager Dougal List.

Hundreds join Gareth’s party Gareth Morgan is gaining supporters for his The Opportunities Party.

Hundreds of people are joining Gareth Morgan’s political party. The Opportunities Party, founded last November, is going through the registration process with already more than 2500 members signed up. The Electoral Commission posted notice of the registration application on January 21.

“I’m told by the guys who work with other parties that 2500 members already is big,” says Gareth.

“They just go to the website and sign up and pay their twenty bucks.”

So far the party has released policy statements on immigration, tax and the environment.

Gareth has identified property as one of the biggest election issues this year.

“Property has driven a massive wedge between the ‘haves’ and the ‘haves not’,” says Gareth.

“If you look at some of the lower paid jobs, their wages haven’t gone down but actually their

discretionary income has gone down through the floor. The reason the obsession about property is there is because it’s the easiest way to make money,” says Gareth.

“Wages is just a mug’s game. You only earn yourself enough wages to get yourself on the property ladder and that’s where you make your money.

“I know people who have never paid tax in their lives after that first job. So they earned enough money to get on the property ladder and ever since then they’ve basically done up houses.

“Lived in them. And then used them to go again.

And go again. And again.

“And those, of course, are the people who are most stridently opposed to what I’m talking about. I have friends like this, I’ve said to them: ‘But you’ve made that on the back of other people. You’ve had a tax break but the other people haven’t’.”

“We will work with whoever the party in power is,” says Gareth. “We don’t care who they are, it’s the policies we want to see in place.”

Tauranga woman Candy Yan, her daughter Renee and husband Peter are in China for this Chinese New Year.

New year for Bay residents Tauranga woman Candy Yan will be halfway around the world on January 28 but chances are extremely high she’ll be doing what every other Bay of Plenty Chinese resident is doing.

Celebrating the Chinese New Year.

Candy, husband Peter and daughter Renee headed for China on January 19 to see family – and they’ll see in the Chinese New Year tomorrow and celebrate for six days afterwards.

“My father-in-law’s 80th birthday is three days before the Chinese New Year so we are going back to celebrate it with him.”

But it won’t be the only occasion they celebrate. Candy says every Chinese person whether in China or in the Bay of Plenty – or

anywhere else in between – will celebrate the New Year.

“I came to NZ, and Tauranga, with my family in 2002. And I usually go back every second year.

“But the last time I went to China for the New Year was 2012.”

Chinese New Year, known in modern Chinese as the ‘Spring Festival’, is the most important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar.

Celebrations usually run from the evening preceding the first day, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month.

The first day of the New Year falls on the new moon between January 21 and February 20. In 2017, the first day of the Chinese New Year is tomorrow, Saturday, January 28, initiating another year of the rooster. “We call it the Spring Festival – it is the start of spring when it starts to get warm and everything starts to grow and for us

it symbolises a new start to the year; a new beginning.”

Candy says it’s mainly a family celebration – similar to the Western World’s Christmas day – but without the gifts.

“An article I read says it’s the biggest movement of people in the world during a short period of time.” That’s because everyone in China is trying to get home to see family on Chinese New Year’s Eve. “Wherever you are during the festival [in China] – everybody is trying to get back to their parents’ home. Normally, we have seven days’ holiday starting from New Year’s Eve. And in this week you can imagine millions of people trying to take the train, aeroplane and bus to get home. It is very, very big.”

But in the Bay Chinese families won’t need to worry about traffic and congestion. The 2000-3000 Chinese in the Western BOP will probably gather at homes or a local church to celebrate. Merle Foster

Park closed until April More trees than expected means logging the Papamoa Hills Park will take longer.

Access to the Papamoa Hills Park from Poplar Poplar Lane Lane isis going going to remain closed to the public right through the summer because there are more trees than originally calculated for a logging operation underway.

The popular park has been closed to the public since October 6.

It was originally expected to re-open about now – mid-January – but this week the Bay of Plenty Regional Council advised it will remain closed until April.

Fulton Hogan has told BOPRC the timeframe for completion of their logging operation has been extended due to harvest quantities exceeding pre-harvest calculations, says BOPRC Kaituna catchments manager Pim de Monchy.

“The main access track will be reinstated and a reopening date set as soon as we regain access to the carpark and main track area, which is on land leased from Fulton Hogan,” says Pim.

“That means the Poplar Lane access reopening date is now likely to be sometime in April.

“This delay is disappointing but it means the logging operation can still be completed during summer, when there’s least risk of sediment runoff into waterways. It also avoids the need for additional closures in future.”

Plus delays have been caused by weather experienced before Christmas, says Pim. The harvesters were two weeks behind at Christmas and they have dropped back further since then.

And in the area just to the north of the quarry Fulton Hogan found higher volumes of timber than originally estimated, says Pim. “Sometimes I think forestry contract harvesters tend estimate at the low end so they don’t disappoint the client when they come out with tonnage,” says Pim. “It’s a good things from a cashflow perspective for owner of the forest, but it takes longer.”

Banning microbeads to better environment The Government is proposing to ban personal care products containing plastic microbeads, says Environment Minister Dr Nick Smith.

“We are proposing a ban on the sale and manufacture of personal care products in New Zealand containing microbeads because of the long-term risk they pose to our aquatic and marine

environments.” Nick says the problem with plastic microbeads is they are too small to retrieve or recycle, they do not biodegrade, and they are mistaken by marine life as food.

Consultation document ‘Managing microbeads in personal care products’ is open for consultation until February 28, 2017.

Dieting to live longer Losing weight is a common New Year’s resolution, but for one Tauranga woman it could be a matter of life and death.

Michelle Wilson was 19 when she was diagnosed with myotonic muscular dystrophy, a genetic, musclewasting condition.

“Twenty years ago my father found out he had it, and said my siblings and I should get tested. They were fine, but I drew the short straw,” says the 38-year-old.

“It explained a lot. As a baby I was in and out of hospital with really bad reflux. I couldn’t feed off Mum, and I wouldn’t take the bottle.

“Growing up I never wanted to go out and do stuff. I used to

come home from school and go straight to sleep.”

To cope with the disease, Michelle turned to food, which has resulted in another long battle – with her weight.

“My neurologist told me if I don’t lose weight, then I could possibly die due to the weakness of my diaphragm. I’ve got sleep apnoea and shortness of breath when I try to do anything.”

Due to her trouble breathing, as a result of the muscular dystrophy and weight gain, weight loss surgery is not an option for Michelle. Exercise is difficult too, because it can overwork her muscles and worsen her illness.

“I was going to the gym for about two years and wondered why I was so tired all the time.

“I was going six times a week for an hour a day, but apparently I was doing too

much and that progressed my illness by two years.”

She’s hoping to walk laps in the local pool when school holidays are over, but beyond that there’s little else she can do.

Mum Lynn has set up a Givealittle page to help raise funds for her daughter to undergo a diet programme that will hopefully make a difference. She’s already taken out a loan of more than $3000 to help start her daughter on the course, but there’s only so much she can do alone.

“I will do anything to help my daughter for her health and wellbeing as I know everything is such a struggle for Michelle.

The nearest support group is in Auckland, so sometimes we can feel alone coping with everything,” says Lynn.

Two Western Bay of Plenty communities are hosting worm composting workshops next month to teach people how to harvest the compost or ‘vermi-cast’ to use on gardens as a beneficial plant food and soil conditioner.

The worm composting workshops will be at Katikati War Memorial Hall on February 18 from 1pm-3pm and at Te Puke War Memorial Hall on February 25 from 1pm-3pm.

Participants receive their own worm farm bin, worms, lime and compost so they can go home and get started straight away.

The workshop and composting kit will cost participants a subsidised rate of $34.50.

The kit itself is usually valued at $255.

A different kind of pet has its advantages I was walking Spot yesterday, on a lead of course – don’t want the customers complaining or being frightened.

Because Spot’s a bit menacinglooking, and I did some pondering on the impending doom of the dog.

It seems that no matter where you go there are restrictions on dogs.

Only some parks allow dogs, and only some beaches, and they have to be on a lead; and you have to carry a plastic bag for ‘you know what’.

The worst, of course, is seeing someone swinging a full plastic bag because you know what’s in it. Hey lady, I wouldn’t be swinging that bag around like that.

Some dog owners even tie the bag onto the dog’s collar and let them carry their mess around, till they find a bin, or not.

You know the dog knows what’s in it too, just look at their faces. I also pondered what that would feel like if we humans had owners and we went for walkies, and then had our owner tie our mess around our necks. Hopefully Mrs B won’t read this, she often takes me for a walk.

Anywho, as I was walking Spot around the shop I pondered how long it would be before people just gave up on the humble dog and went with a pet that didn’t have so many rules attached.

Not to mention the council’s fee just for owning a dog. Cats, don’t mention cats! Cats don’t have any fees, or noise control callouts for meowing. Or council staff saying: ‘Hey lady, that’s a dangerous breed of cat’.

Unless you own a lion, or a tiger of course.

Probably too soon to make jokes about them.

Anywho, Spot was getting a bit uppity after the third circuit of the shop, and out of breath too. He’s pretty unfit for a crayfish, but it occurred to me that owning a different kind of pet has its advantages. For example, did you know the Department of Conservation has banned all dogs from their camping grounds? Not just big dogs like your man-eater kind, but your labradoodle-cross-

sharpee-cross-bichon fris? Which technically isn’t really a dog, more of a hybrid lab experiment.

Naturally your Chihuahua is a huge threat to ankles everywhere, even a Kiwi’s ankles I suppose. But in their defence, DOC can’t be sending staff round every tent measuring each dog so size restrictions wouldn’t really work. ‘No Mr DOC officer, I assure you he’s not dangerous, he’s just mouthing your hand; it’s his way of playing’.

Spot’s not on any dangerous or banned list either. I can take him anywhere I like, even into restaurants. He’s not really a seeing eye crayfish but that doesn’t matter because even though he’s a bit grumpy like a badly behaved dog, he’s not really a dog. So it’s all good, and he doesn’t bark well either.

Sometimes I wonder why I have him. Wetas make good pets too, especially for old people.

They don’t really move that fast so walking them would be easy. And you can freeze them and they thaw out okay too, so all good for the winter when the old person can’t pay their power bill.

Because they are left to their own devices when they get old, unlike almost every other country in the world where parents are appreciated and looked after when they get old.

Gone too far again with this line of thought?

I think we may be seeing a change in pet trends soon. You can take your pet pig to the beach, doesn’t even have to be on a lead either – and there’s no council pig-owning fee. Personally, I wouldn’t take Spot to the beach. He doesn’t like the sand that much, keeps heading for the water. Not sure why.

So, if you need any advice on owning crayfish as pets, or pigs, or wetas, come down to Tauranga Dive and ask away.

Not chickens though, that’s Mrs B’s domain.

It takes three to ski

Bay of Plenty residents planning a ski on the region’s waterways this summer are being told to remember – the act takes three.

Bay of Plenty harbourmaster Peter Buell says any boat towing a skier, biscuit, wakeboard or similar device needs an observer.

Peter says the rule exists to ensure the driver is focused on looking ahead and scanning for hazards.

The other rules being broken relate to exceeding five knots within 200m of shore or within 50m of another vessel and failing to carry enough properly fitting lifejackets for everyone on board.

Jet skis increasingly popular Jetskis, personal watercraft, Sea Doo – at Action Sports Direct they are seeing a huge amount of growth as people discover the advantages of owning a jetski.

“The market is expanding from traditional recreational use like touring, towing and racing into fishing,” says Sean Joyce at Action Sports Direct.

“They’re becoming a practical, affordable option to replacing the family boat. They have great fuel economy, with large fuel tanks, they are cheap to run and have huge range.

“There’s lots of power there to have fun with and can get you out of situations very quickly.”

The huge amount of growth in sales Sean sees is being driven by price. You can buy brand new for just a bit more than $10,000, which a few years ago wasn’t an option.

“It opens up the market to anyone with a

little disposable income,” says Sean.

He says there is also massive growth in the use of jet skis for fishing and a lot of that comes down to ease of use.

“With a boat you could spend hours thinking about going fishing. With a jet ski you are in the water.

“The time it takes to get to a jetty and off the trailer is nothing – then you are out on an adventure and with a 60 litre tank you could get out to Mayor Island and back. Once you’re back it’s a 90-second flush and you’re done.”

Weeding spot checks for marine pests Spot checks of boat hulls are going to be taking place this summer as Bay of Plenty Regional Council staff and contractors carry out spot checks to prevent the spread of marine pests.

“There’s a real risk of marine pests being introduced to Tauranga Harbour by recreational boats that travel here from pest infested waters such as Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf,” says Bay of Plenty Regional Council biosecurity officer Hamish Lass.

“If we find any pest-infested hulls, the boat owners will be asked to haul out and have their hull cleaned.”

Local boaties can help protect the harbours they love by keeping their moored boat hulls clean and anti-

fouled. “A harbour full of clean hulls will slow the spread of pests if they do manage to hitch a ride on a visiting boat. “‘No more than light slime, all the time’ is the golden rule so marine pest spores can’t latch on and grow unseen in the fouling fuzz. It also pays to doublecheck your hull and inspect any underwater nooks and crannies on your boat before you head off somewhere new,” says Hamish.

Sea-faring visitors can prevent holiday hassles if they clean their hull before heading to the Bay of Plenty. Some marinas also require proof of recent cleaning so it pays to call ahead and check what they need, says Hamish.

“Bay of Plenty swing mooring holders are required to notify the harbourmaster before loaning out their mooring to a visiting vessel. We’ve been working hard

to prevent fanworm and other unwanted marine pests from establishing here.

“Their aggressive growth habits mean they can interfere with fisheries, ruin our fabulous underwater environments and create problems for boat owners and marine-based businesses,” says Hamish.

In the last three years, marine pests have been detected and removed from the hulls of 11 recreational boats in Tauranga Harbour. The boats had all been brought to Tauranga from Auckland or Northland, without prior hull cleaning.

The University of Waikato is assisting with the regional council’s marine pest work.

They’ll be helping with underwater searches and installing new monitoring tools like passive monitoring stations.

Funding targets parenting and youth Tauranga’s Wright Family Foundation has started pumping substantial contributions into two

parenting and youth programmes. The groups are The Parenting Place and the Brainwave Trust Aotearoa.

“Both these organisations provide programmes which share knowledge and education that can make a real difference in the life of children and families,” says foundation CEO Chloe Wright. “We want to provide an opportunity, which means people who would be great candidates for these programmes aren’t missing out just because the budget can’t stretch.”

The Wright Family Foundation aims to make a difference through education. “It’s about growing the good, which is just what both Brainwave and The Parenting Place are trying to achieve,” says Chloe.

The Parenting Place is a charity offering parenting advice and support. It aims for kids to be raised in a positive environment where their full potential is developed. Lex Mawson of

the Parenting Place says the foundation contributions mean its programmes will reach many more children and families this year – particularly schools where money is a huge barrier.

The foundation will also create space at the Bethlehem Birthing Centre where the Parenting Place can run its programmes and seminars.

The other charity is the Brainwave Trust, which focuses on the early development of children. “The funding will be used to provide a programme that builds early brain development and its lifelong impact on children,” says trust executive director Sue Wright.

Brainwave’s vision is that all New Zealand children are valued and nurtured so they reach their full potential.

Gaining leadership skills and confidence for life A great CV stands out from the rest. And teenagers looking to better their CVs, while increasing life skills and confidence, can count on Summerhill A1 Youth Academy for help.

The academy offers a Leadership Course for those aged 15-19 years, working in confidence and leadership building, community work and outdoor adventure.

Coordinator Garth Collings says: “Our goal is to give Bay of Plenty young people a springboard into a lifetime of confidence”.

And they need boys! “We’ve got plenty of girls who have signed up, and we’re encouraging the boys to do the same,” says Garth.

He says 100 per cent attendance is the aim, however the club can be flexible and work around students’ other commitments.

On completion the participants

will be presented with the Summerhill Gold Card. “This will give future employers and educators an online link to the young person’s outstanding character reference, and that’s the point of difference their CV will have over others.”

Set on a working farm and public adventure centre in the Papamoa Hills, a lot of what is done during the course incorporates the outdoors.

Getting a good night’s sleep?

Busy schedules can mean that nap times are skipped, bed times are pushed out and days start earlier and finish later than expected. Rebekah Sharp from Elm Tree Early Learning Centre shares why sleep is critical for the learning and development of children.

Sleep, or the lack of it, affects a child’s concentration, memory, behaviour and physical health, making it more challenging for them to learn.

Memory and concentration. A child who is tired often has trouble concentrating. This can effect play and make following instructions from peers, parents and teachers difficult.

Behaviour. Just as with adults, children’s behaviour changes when there

is a lack of sleep. This can be misinterpreted as poor behaviour, when in fact a quick nap or a set routine for bed can fix the problem.

Physical health. Sleep plays an important role in assisting the body to repair itself.

It supports the immune system, which helps fight infections and reduce the risk of picking up tummy bugs or colds.

Good bedtime habits are best established in infancy but it’s never too late to encourage better sleep.

Try to keep to regular set bed times as much as possible.

Maintain the same routine each night. For example, dinner, bath, book, then bed to give your child consistency and time to wind down each day.

Ensure their bedroom is dim, quiet and at a comfortable temperature.

As children grow, sleep needs and habits change. Adapt your routine accordingly to ensure they enjoy what we all need – a great night’s sleep!

Moving in with eyes wide open Specsavers Mount Maunganui is relocating to a brand new site within Bayfair Shopping Centre on Wednesday, February 8.

Steps to joint health – Part 1 Osteoarthritis can cause anything from mild discomfort to seriously restricting quality of life. While medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs provide predictable results, nutritional therapy is more unpredictable.

But experimentation is important.

Some people find their arthritis is greatly influenced by diet while others less so. I generally recommend people keep clear of common citrus fruits and acidic fruits in general. I’m helping one person who, by trial and error, has found she’s very sensitive to strawberries. I’m not sure why but small joint arthritis – especially hand joints – seem to be more sensitive to acidic foods.

I start most people on an antiinflammatory diet. The key components are to reduce inflammatory fats, sugars

and refined carbohydrates. We target anti-inflammatory oils, appropriate protein sources and increase antioxidant dense plant foods.

During the next few columns we’ll explore the specific components of this type of eating. Not only will it help joints but it’s excellent for general health.

With supplements my general approach is to start people on a programme that is most likely to get a positive response in six-eight weeks. I like to keep things simple and usually start with high doses of Omega 3 fish oil for its anti-inflammatory function.

To this we to add 1500mg of high grade chondroitin sulphate, 1500mg of glucosamine sulphate and 200mg of a 95 per cent bioavailable curcumin turmeric extract. In some cases, especially spinal arthritis, I add antioxidant complexes and extra magnesium to relax tissue surrounding the joint.

We will maintain these high initial doses

Sometimes I think people just like to have something to complain about and the fact that the weather has been so awful – well, in most peoples’ opinions – has given many a licence to compete on who can tell the worst weather-related holiday story.

Considering photodynamic therapy In a recent publication from the ‘British Journal of Dermatology’, a study very eloquently demonstrated skin cancers can be prevented from developing in severely sundamaged skin.

“In people with diffusely sundamaged skin, such as our average adult Kiwi, photodynamic therapy – also known as PDT – will decrease the number of skin cancers that develop in time,” reads the journal.

A Greek team studied 45 patients by only treating one half of their faces with PDT. They then followed up the patients to see how many cancers develop on the treated and non-treated sides respectively.

At three months, there was one patient with a new non-melanoma skin cancer on treated side and eight patients with cancers on the non-treated side.

This trend continued during 12 months of the study with two versus 15 new non-melanoma skin cancers at six months and seven versus 23 new nonmelanoma skin cancer at eight months.

At the end of the study after 12 months, there were 30 cancers on the non-treated side compared to 14 new non-melanoma skin cancers on the treated side.

“This means one treatment can decrease the number of new non-melanoma skin cancers by more than 50 per cent,” says Skinspots skin cancer clinic’s Dr Franz Strydom.

“At Skinspots we have excellent results with PDT and other topical treatments all with similar outcomes.”

Overcoming isolation and loneliness David’s “pretty good stuff – a little guy who gets stuff done”.

And that’s direct from Kim – a fiercely independent 80-something-year-old.

And David says if Kim hadn’t been confined to a wheelchair, if life had been kinder and fairer, she could have been a very powerful person.

“She has a huge heart and a huge mind, very strongminded and I like that.”

You can’t doubt it. Kim even has a balloon stating

that it’s not the age but the attitude that counts.

And she is dripping with it.

We’re sitting in the living room of Kim’s council flat in Bureta. There’s banter, wisecracks and hoots of laughter.

Which belies why David is here. David is Kim’s AVS buddy – it’s an Accredited Visiting Service hook-up. “I drop by every Monday for a chat or a trip out. Just whatever Kim wants.” If David didn’t drop by, Kim would have no-one. She would be socially isolated in her little council flat, spending much of each day, each week, alone.

That’s where the AVS kicks in – to reduce that isolation and loneliness.

Kim had seven siblings – but just Kim and a sister survive. The sister lives in the South Island and has her own health issues.

“Sit there David,” says Kim. “David do this, David do that.” More howls of laughter.

David was a businessman. “People helped me to

succeed so it was time to pay back.”

“We tend to write old people off,” says David. “But it’s nice to share their lives, their experiences, their knowledge and their opinions.

They have plenty to offer.”

“David is a kind man, he cares for people and he cares for me,” says Kim. It’s a mutual admiration society.

But the AVS needs more Davids. There are too many Kims, and not enough Davids.

Engaging the new type of ‘retiree’ While Tauranga benefits from being part of a growing region, it is also a retirement destination – and this group of people should not be seen as simply retired, says a leading Kiwi academic and professor.

Distinguished Professor Paul Spoonley – who is coming to Tauranga next month to talk to the business community – says the new fifth-largest city needs to harness its silver economy.

“In this decade the number of people aged 65-plus will double to 1.2 million and they are the healthiest, wealthiest, most active NZers aged 65-plus we’ve ever seen.

“And they should not be seen as simply retired. They are doing a lot, they have money to invest, they are contributing economically and they are a major source of future activity in this country.”

And Tauranga has a significant number of those older NZers and is becoming of the retirement centres for the country, says Paul.

“My question is how will Tauranga become age-friendly? You’ve got a huge resource there of older NZers.

“So what will you do to engage those older NZers and make them active members of the community?”

Paul, who is also vice chancellor of Massey University, is in Tauranga on February

7 to kick off the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Beyond 2020 - Smart Talk Future thinking’ talk series.

He’ll lead the first instalment, which will discuss how we can deliver on the potential of our businesses, communities and our region on the back of his most recent book ‘Rebooting the regions’ which is full of expert essays on how to combat the pull of Auckland and get the regions humming.

Paul says there’s no doubt Tauranga is humming – thanks to it being a growth node next to Hamilton after Auckland, which is predicted to gain 60 per cent of NZs entire growth in the next two decades.

But Paul says New Zealand is “behind the eight ball” in thinking about the demographics of the regions and how they might work to build their economies.

“There are three components to Tauranga’s population growth. One is it has a newlyretired population coming to live there.

“Another comes from fertility – the number of babies born in the area. And the third component comes from immigrants.

The history of gingerbread Who would think that gingerbread would have a history? Or, at least, an interesting one?

As people have migrated from one corner of the globe to another, gingerbread has travelled with them in all its forms from soft and cake-like to crisp and biscuity.

Gingerbread seems to have originated in ancient Armenia, in and around present-day Turkey and Russia. It was brought to France by an Armenian monk in 992AD. Bet you never thought gingerbread was more than 1000 years old!

By the 13th Century, gingerbread had been brought to Sweden by German travellers. And in the 15th Century, Swedish nuns were making gingerbread to ease indigestion. Ginger

has long been considered an aid for indigestion. We still drink ginger ale for an upset stomach.

It reached the United Kingdom sometime in the 17th Century.

The art of gingerbread house making seems to have originated in Germany, where gingerbread tends to be a harder consistency, and it is the German fairytale ‘Hansel and Gretel’ that introduced the witch with a house made of gingerbread.

Of all the German cities, Nuremberg became known as the ‘gingerbread capital’ of the world.

Sculptors, painters, woodcarvers and goldsmiths all contributed in the creation of the most beautiful cakes in Europe.

Gifted craftsmen carved wooden molds and talented artists assisted with the frosting.

Many of these designs were actually objets d’art, varied and incredibly fancy, depicting angels, hearts and wreaths. Nuremberg gingerbread was not baked in the home. It was the exclusive production of a Guild of master bakers known as the Lebkuchler.

Their creations were known as lebuucken, named for all of the flavourings and ingredients available at the time.

These included cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, white pepper, anise and ginger.

So whether cooked, soft and spongy, or crisp like a cookie, nothing beats this spicy treat – especially the soft cake variety served warm on a festive day. So if you’ve never put together a gingerbread house, give it a try.

Gingerbread

Serves 10 Ingredients 190g butter 140g brown sugar 1 tsp grated lemon rind 1 medium lemon, juiced (30ml) 125g golden syrup or molasses 2 eggs 375g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 Tbsp ground ginger

2 tsp ground allspice Royal Icing 6 egg whites 2kg sifted icing sugar Method Preparation time is about one hour and 30 minutes, cooking time is 30 minutes.

First cut out in thin cardboard: a side wall of 12x20cm; a rectangular end wall of 12x13cm; a triangular gable of 12x8x8cm; and a roof rectangle of 12x22cm.

Tape the rectangular end wall piece to the triangular gable piece.

And match the long side of the triangle, 12cm, to one of the 12cm sides of the end wall.

In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Stir in lemon rind, lemon juice and molasses. Gradually beat in two eggs. Sift the flour, baking powder and spices together, stir into creamed mixture. Add more flour if needed to make a firm dough. Wrap dough in cling wrap and refrigerate for one hour.

Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface. Divide into six portions, two slightly larger than the others. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the four smaller pieces to about the size of the side wall and the end wall with gable templates; cut out two of each. Roll out remaining dough and cut into two rectangular roof pieces. Transfer gingerbread onto greased baking trays.

In a preheated oven at 190 degrees Celsius bake gingerbread for 10 minutes, or until crisp.

When removing from the oven, leave the gingerbread on the baking trays for a few minutes to set then transfer to wire racks.

Leave out overnight to totally cool and harden.

In a large bowl, lightly whisk two egg whites. Gradually beat in approximately five cups icing sugar. The icing should be smooth and stand in firm peaks. Spread or pipe a 23cm line of icing onto a foil-lined cake board, and press in one of the side walls so that it sticks firmly and stands upright.

If necessary, spread or pipe a little extra icing along either side to help support it.

Take an end wall and ice both the side edges.

Spread or pipe a line of icing on the board at a right angle to the first wall, and press the end wall into position. Repeat this process with the other two walls until they are all in position.

Leave the walls to harden together for at least two hours before putting on the roof.

Spread or pipe a thick layer of icing on top of all the walls, and fix the roof pieces in position; the roof should overlap the walls to make the eaves.

Pipe or spread a little icing along the crest of the roof to hold the two pieces firmly together. Leave overnight to set firmly.

When ready to decorate, make the remaining icing. In a large bowl, lightly whisk four egg whites and mix in remaining icing sugar as before – or you may want to make several bowls of different coloured icing. Use to make snow on the roof and other external decoration.

Use various lollies for decoration as well. Finish with a fine dusting of sifted icing sugar.

Minimum wage increase doesn’t make everyone happy The Government’s announcement the minimum wage will increase by 50 cents to $15.75 an hour on April 1 this year is being met with disdain from some quarters.

But Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Woodhouse says the Government is committed to striking the right balance “between protecting our lowest paid workers and ensuring jobs are not lost”.

Also this April, the starting-out and training hourly minimum wage rates will increase from $12.20 to $12.60 per hour, remaining at 80 per cent of the adult minimum wage.

“An increase to $15.75 will benefit approximately 119,500

workers and will increase wages throughout the economy by $65 million per year.

“At a time when annual inflation is 0.4 per cent, a 3.3 per cent increase to the minimum wage will give our lowest paid workers more money in their pockets, without hindering job growth or imposing undue pressure on businesses,” says Michael.

“Annual increases to the minimum wage since 2009 reflect this Government’s commitment to growing the economy, boosting incomes and supporting job growth throughout New Zealand.”

But E tu’s living wage campaign lead organiser Mat Danaher says a 50 cent increase in the minimum wage doesn’t go far enough and employers should commit to paying the Living Wage.

He points to last week’s figures showing key New Zealand cities are among the most unaffordable in the world.

The 13th annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey, which compares housing prices to incomes in 406 metropolitan housing markets, put Auckland near the top due to extremely expensive prices but modest pay packets.

Other centres including Wellington, Christchurch and Tauranga were also rated as “severely unaffordable”.

Mat says this week’s announced increase will also be cold comfort for the many families still trying to pay for Christmas as well as facing back-to-school costs.

Buying or buying while on holiday The festive holiday season is a time to see family and friends, unwind, relax, and have that free head space to take stock of your life and think about want you want to achieve next.

So often you’ll see families stopping at windows of real estate agents during their summer holidays – pondering if buying or building a house is something to get stuck into.

Those holidaying away from home like to see what’s on offer at their holiday destination, the prices, types of section or houses for sale – and what is typically being built locally.

Many times this leads them to actually go and take a look at an open home – since they’ve got the time – or do a nosy drive-by. Many will find themselves driving home thinking: ‘Yep, let’s do it, let’s make this bold move’.

So what should you look for when browsing sections and homes for sale while you’re on holiday?

Before you get ahead of yourself look at the region you’re considering building or buying in. Will there be adequate employment for yourself or your family?

Do the childcare centres and schools meet your needs? Are they suitable?

Then figure out if you want to commute or buy something closer to work, schools etc.

Is the region remote or centrally located?

Do you mind either way?

If buying a house, consider what stock is available and if it suits your family needs and price range. By buying a particular property could it give you an alternative income stream? And would this pay off?

If building, check out what sections or sites are available for the type of house design you require.

Do you want to build in a subdivision or on a block of land just out of town, or in a remote area?

Then check out local builders, and their availability. And call into the local council and get a handle of how much rates are for the district, what services are included and are not.

Also look at whether the area has fibre internet – this could change things if you work from home.

When building see if there is a wait time for a build. This may change when or where you build depending on when you want to shift towns and your employment arrangements.

And do the maths – is it more affordable to build in this region or buy?

Ask some potential neighbours what the street, town or community is like.

Meet some local real estate agents and see if they have anything on their books that you’re wanting.

Go to the pub and talk to the locals about some secret gems – I mean properties – hidden around the place. And dig up the dirt on no-go properties or areas.

In conclusion, do as much research as you can when building or buying in a new region. It will pay off whichever Merle Foster way you decide to go.

How and when to divorce your house Selling your house? The first thing to do is emotionally divorce yourself from it. There is no place for emotions in a real estate deal.

There should be no obvious feelings – no emotional attachment. The house is a thing, a saleable commodity. The aim is get prospective purchasers to see it as their home and not yours.

There are the obvious things.

First impressions matter, so tidy it up. Make small repairs, do some painting. Pay special attention to the kitchen and bathrooms. Tidy rooms and cupboards, remove clutter, create space. Make the house look bigger than it is.

Daring designs at home If you ever want to dream before you can manage or afford to build your dream home – hop on the internet and have a look.

The in-home designs on offer will blow your mind – and it may give some food for thought when it comes to the reality of designing or building your new home.

If you’re really into pools or the beach there’s some crazy options there. How about an indoor-outdoor pool? One which flows from a room of your house out on a decktype construction. You can avoid the rain by using the indoor ‘pool room’ to still have a dip. Luxury aye?

If you like the beach why not bring it under your toes – while sitting at your home office or dining table? Yes, that’s right someone has thought up putting a low-level sandpit underfoot below the dining table or desk. Not sure if this is what I would call

luxury. Maybe just at one with nature.

For the kids – they’d be super proud to their mates if their home’s spiral staircase had an in-built slide.

‘Don’t run around in the house’ could take on a new meaning.

If you love or loath your feline, how about a cat transit system? Essentially this is a steel pipeline running through rooms in the home fixed up to the walls with a series of hatches to let fluffy in or out. Or about putting a glass floor in one of your rooms? Or installing a seethrough bath-tub?

Then there’s some ideas that are more practical than crazy.

Some of these seem a bit more affordable – and effective. Make your dining table double as pool table with an in-built sliding top. Understairs storage can be designed in a funky way while still being effective. For example, a bookshelf built-in to your staircase. Or how about ceiling library. Yes, a ceiling library.

Google it. Plus, a vertical herb garden in the kitchen could come in handy too. So if you want to dream – and dream big – go online and start looking.

Dream of an energy-efficient home We all have a rough cloud puff hovering in our head of what our dream home would look like.

Floor-to-ceiling windows, sparkling benchtops and a deck with surrounding pool.

But it doesn’t need to cost more to build an energy efficient home – and you’ll get better comfort and lower energy bills for years to come – according to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.

EECA’s Energywise website has a variety of tips on how to design a house to be more energy-efficient.

It’s advised the best building site for a warm, energy efficient home gets plenty of sun, particularly from the north, and is sheltered from prevailing winds.

A home designed to harness the sun’s free warmth is placed on the sunniest part of the section. Is oriented to face the sun, has plenty of insulation to trap in the free heat from the sun and uses thermal mass – like a concrete floor – exposed to the sun so it soaks up heat during the day and releases it when temperatures drop at night.

The home needs appropriately sized and positioned windows, and properly designed overhangs over northerly windows to limit summer sun while allowing plenty in

during winter.

House size and shape are also key. Energywise suggests thinking about how much space you need on a day-to-day basis.

Smaller houses are cheaper to build, easier to heat and use a lot less energy.

The more complex a home’s shape is, the more floor, wall and ceiling area it has to lose heat.

Simple house designs – for example compact rectangular shapes and multi-level homes –have less external surface area, so are easier and cheaper to keep warm.

Plus good design, materials and construction will enable your home to retain heat and lower heating bills.

You’ll need high levels of insulation in ceiling, walls and underfloor. And insulate any concrete floor on ground – both underneath and around the perimeter – and between any attached garage and the rest of the house.

Minimising plumbing and electrical services inside external wall cavities will boost insulation and airtightness.

Ventilation is important too. It helps move moisture and maintain air quality. In summer, it’s key to keeping your house cool and comfortable.

Most houses can be well ventilated with adequately sized and located windows.

Room layout and window placement can be designed to enable effective crossventilation, which is good for summer cooling. Properly sized and located extractor fans are essential for removing moisture from wet areas such as the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry.

Lastly, Energywise advises it’s important to work with architects, designers and builders who understand energy efficient design principles, know how the different components in a house work together and use computer modelling to understand a home’s energy performances before Merle Foster it is built.

The Sunvue system consists of aluminium framing with 6mm polycarbonate sheets that block out 99 per cent of the sun’s UV rays, says Ben. “The framing can be powder-coated to almost any colour required, offering a contemporary look with beautiful styling.”

Making fire safety a build priority Watching the TV show ‘Nigel Latta blows stuff up’ the other night sent a shiver down my spine. It kept me awake. And it prompted me to order hubby to check our smoke alarms – ASAP. The episode shows Nigel burning down a house – and talking about how fire can quickly take hold of a home – like in less than four minutes you can kiss your home goodbye.

And did you know – plonked in the middle of your home is a giant petrol bomb? According to Nigel, an average three-seater couch made of modern synthetic materials holds the equivalent of four one-litre cans of petrol.

An average two-seater has the equivalent of three one-litre cans. And a one-seater has another two one-litre cans.

Curtains, cushions, toys and carpet, plus audio visual equipment will make at least two more cans.

So the average modern lounge has the equivalent of 35 litres of petrol. Eeek!

So how can we design, build and renovate our homes with fire safety in mind?

According to BRANZ – an independent Kiwi organisation inspiring to provide better buildings for New Zealanders – there’s few things we can do.

Generally, according to BRANZ, hard lining with plasterboard reduces the risk of fire spreading within a house but there is still a significant fire load from furnishings.

So the design process of renovations must include fire safety consideration.

Installation of smoke alarms is now mandatory, but you can also consider fitting a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, plus there’s heat detector devices. And how about installing a domestic fire sprinkler system?

Sprinklers provide the most effective protection against fire damage, according to BRANZ. If a fire starts, the sprinkler heads immediately above the fire will discharge water.

The most common domestic fire sprinkler systems use a glass bulb, heat-sensitive element and activate at about 68 degrees Celsius, have a flat and wide spray pattern with small and medium droplet sizes, sprinkler heads that may be concealed, flush-mounted, side-wall or pendant type and require a 20mm diameter pipe connection, says BRANZ. If a fire develops, not all sprinkler heads

will operate, but only those closest to the fire – 65 per cent of fires are controlled by a single sprinkler head, and 95 per cent are controlled by five sprinkler heads or less.

When a sprinkler head is set off, the fire brigade is also called.

Design and installation of a domestic sprinkler system must be carried out by a qualified practitioner, with independent inspection and certification.

Design consideration also needs to made for heaters and other appliances – so all appliances that burn gas, oil, solid fuel or any other combustible material, the combustion process doesn’t raise the temperature of any adjacent building element to a level where its performance is affected. And the accumulation of combustion gases within the building is avoided.

If renovating, chimneys will need to be assessed for fire safety if the fireplaces they serve are to be used for heating.

So think wisely when designing, building or renovating your home.

How much spend is too much spend?

They are the over-riding questions with any house renovations. How much should we spend, how much is too much and will we recoup our investment?

There are no easy answers. But there are guidelines.

People buying a house look first at the kitchen and bathrooms. And while they are obviously the most expensive to renovate, they’re also more likely to pay for themselves. Adding rooms such as a family room or master en suite also add value at resale time.

Because bigger houses get better prices.

On the other hand, swimming pools hardly ever pay for themselves. It seems buyers won’t pay more for what is perceived as an ongoing chore and expense.

A home office isn’t a selling point either. Not many people see a work room as a positive.

And a big flash expensive reno doesn’t necessarily mean it will return more.

Improvement can beat replacement.

An analysis of cost versus value has shown a kitchen facelift — painting, refinishing surfaces and

upgrading appliances — will return more than a full redesign. And spending smaller and smarter is the way. It’s said you can make $20,000 look like a million dollars if it’s spent judiciously on design and product selection.

Investing more than you can hope to recoup, because you love your house and plan to live in it for a long while, is fine. But you can avoid and should avoid unpleasant surprises when it comes time to put up that ‘For Sale’ sign.

Bigger city, not necessarily worse Re: ‘We don’t want Auckland’s refugees’ (The Weekend Sun, December 30).

I was sorry to read this letter and hope R Paterson has a happy 2017 and feels a lot better about life at the end of this year than at the end of 2016. I wonder how many people living here have lived here all their lives? I suspect that many, if not most, have come from elsewhere at some stage.

I’m sure if R Paterson had an urgent need for life-saving surgery they would not insist on having a Tauranga born-and-bred surgeon but would be pleased to get the best of care from our excellent hospital wherever the surgeon was from, even if they were from Auckland.

Many of those “flocking here” are retirees but Tauranga has long been a mecca for retirees. It has kind, friendly and welcoming people - except for R Paterson - a lovely climate and a great lifestyle.

What’s not to like about living in this lovely city? Since retiring here we’ve met many people from

Auckland, Christchurch, Taupo, Whanganui, the King Country, Kapiti Coast, Whangarei, Thames, Wellington and a number from Hamilton. We’ve also met retirees from Scotland and England.

The influx of people is not just from Auckland.

We’ve also met many businesspeople, professional people and tradespeople, nearly all of whom have said how delighted they are with the growth happening here as they are busier than ever and able to grow their businesses.

Yes, there are some infrastructure pressures as there would be in

any growing city. But we are still small enough to have the time to get these right. And our city has the advantage of being able to look at the problems other cities have faced, the solutions they’ve generated, and be prepared with strategies that will work for Tauranga before we grow too much more. A bigger city is not necessarily a worse city, it can be more vibrant and diverse and exciting for all ages. Let’s stop knocking Aucklanders and other newcomers and let all of us who live here be thankful for the great little city we have.

Global warming results overstated It is reassuring to hear Prime Minister Bill English express a moderate view of climate change and not be drawn into the acceptance, as has US President Barack Obama, of the necessity for extreme and immediate action to avoid a cataclysmic future.

Obama, like Al Gore, has said there is no need of further discussion and in so doing dismisses the

findings of thousands of highly qualified international scientists who are vilified as ‘deniers’ and ‘flat earthers’ without any assistance from governments or the media to voice their concerns. For scientists to dogmatically refuse to even discuss such matters with other dissenting scientists is extreme arrogance fostered by the assurance of international governments’ financial support. I can guarantee any objective person, willing to spend an hour or so on YouTube, Google or Wikipedia, observing genuine, skeptical scientists - a scientist must be skeptical without proof - from both sides, discussing verifiable facts, will very quickly realise the projections of Al Gore and his followers of horrendous ‘global Warming’ and its appalling results are, at least, over-stated.

Re: Unjustified enrichment/’gong’ fever (The Weekend Sun, January 6). R Paterson stating one of the few things the Labour Government of 2000 got absolutely right was the abolition of knighthoods and damehoods is debatable.

However, the correspondent failed to advise that following the reinstatement of the former honours system in 2009, by the National-led John Key Government, the offer to transfer honours received under the Labour party rules to the reinstated honours system was taken up by virtually all the recipients of the Labour Party-introduced system.

Even more glaringly was the acceptance of a knighthood by one of the assumed architects of the Labour honours system being, Sir Michael Cullen.

Sort out infrastructure first!

It’s been patently obvious for the last couple of years a major traffic meltdown was looming – now exacerbated by the sudden huge influx of people coming here, especially those fleeing Auckland.

Tauranga’s population is up 10 per cent and our traffic volumes by at least that figure, probably more.

Existing infrastructure simply cannot cope nor can it be made to cope in the short term – there can be no immediate relief and things will just get far worse and may well just keep going south.

If you believe local and national politicians, city planners and the New Zealand transport Agency then sorry you are easily duped as they are just intent on blindsiding the public.

Bayfair roundabout is a prime example when about 10 years ago it was suggested that traffic lights be installed for little cost NZTA pooh poohed that notion by claiming the Te Maunga/Bayfair flyovers were imminent. Well folks that’s still at least a couple of years away and in the meantime Bayfair location has

become intolerable.

Current proposals to ease traffic congestion are ludicrous. In 2006 the ‘powers that be’ should have listened by selecting Matapihi Rd and installing another low level harbour crossing at Matapihi Railbridge upgrading the railbridge and incorporating the sewer pipeline while at the same time saving $21 million on the pipeline harbour crossing.

Incidentally I was in the middle of the traffic mayhem last Thursday when Hewletts Rd, Aerodrome Rd, Jean Batten Place, Newton Rd and Totara St etc. etc. were all gridlocked for more than an hour for what was a relatively minor traffic accident. The solution is stop developing subdivisions and issuing building consents until the

RE: ‘Losing control of our environment?

(The Weekend Sun, January 20).K. Molloy insists that black swans and Canada geese are the primary cause of pollution in Tauranga Harbour.

These birds simply recycle nutrients that are already there. As stated by the BOPRC, nutrients and sediment killing the harbour flow in from elsewhere in rivers polluted by intensive farming, from septic tanks and stormwater drains, and due to human interference with the landscape.

K Molloy should visit the harbour around Turret Rd Bridge and Welcome Bay where no swans or geese are resident in spring and summer, yet sea lettuce is abundant, huge areas are anoxic due to sedimentation, and the historic cockle and pipi beds have disappeared.

The complaint is reminiscent of, and is just as misinformed, as statements by fisherfolk who kill seals because seals eat fish.

It is also worth noting here the swans and geese we have today may be introduced - some swans have self-introduced and they are strictly native - but NZ has extinct versions of both.

There may well have been thousands of these birds on Tauranga Harbour before human arrival.

Re: Privacy or Profit? Richie and Gemma’s wedding.

I really enjoy The Weekend Sun’s ‘Roger Rabbit’ column but feel I must correct the above paragraph.

I am deeply disappointed you chose to devote one-third of last week’s column to making derogatory comments concerning Richie and Gemma’s wedding.

Kindly read the final paragraph, page 12 in ‘Woman’s Day’ edition January 23, 2017, which deals with exactly this subject - saying Richie and Gemma will be making a donation to charity. Hello? They don’t even have to.

Richie has in the past stayed and played rugby in NZ at great cost to himself, when he could have, as many other much lesser rugby players have done, gone overseas and played for massive money. Richie also turned down a knighthood for - in my opinion - for much lesser public recognition. Both he and Gemma are extremely clean-cut, massively successful young NZers we can all be proud of and are a real inspiration for all young Kiwis to look up to.

When will the public be satisfied?

Please don’t judge the warmth of your Tauranga welcome by the intemperate outburst of one local curmudgeon.

Consider him as you might an aging family pet, whose barking is well intentioned but often misdirected.

To me, the newbies are welcome and I’m content to judge you, not by your

city of origin, but by your contribution to our community. Certainly our infrastructure is stretched by city growth, but isn’t that just the natural cost of having a very desirable place to live?

Seventy-five years of Frock ‘n’ Roll at Baycourt Spread the word. The Rocky Horror Picture Show master will be hitting the Tauranga stage in March.

Katikati-based Richard O’Brien is inviting people to come and spend the evening with him on March 24 at Baycourt Theatre, as he natters with his old chum and moustached, media man of the people, Mark Sainsbury.

Five years ago Richard celebrated his 70th birthday by fundraising for the Starship Foundation.

And he’s doing it again this year, holding a “75 Years of Frock ‘n’ Roll” fundraising event in celebration of his 75th birthday, which also coincides with Starship’s own 25-year celebrations.

“Richard O’Brien has been a wonderful supporter of Starship Foundation over the years and we

are so honoured he has chosen to support us again by giving up his 75th birthday for Starship,” says Starship Foundation chief executive Brad Clark.

“It’s a brilliant concept, and one we hope will inspire others to jump on board and give up their own birthdays to help children, young people and their families from all over New Zealand.”

More than 300 people turned up for the charity ride, organised by Bayride Motorcycles, which went around the outskirts of Tauranga and up to McLaren Falls on January 15.

Christine Welch was seriously injured in a highspeed collision with a car in September, 2016.

Her right leg is being removed and Christine needs three prosthetic legs for walking, working around her farm and getting back on her motorcycle.

All funds raised from the charity ride will go to Christine to help her during her recovery.

The money will help her partner take unpaid leave from work to look after her, as well as necessary modifications to vehicles to help accommodate

Don’t bypass Katikati music Let’s talk about Katikati; there’s more to it than avocados.

I like Katikati a lot and I was reminded of that a couple of weeks ago at the Katikati Avocado Food & Wine Festival. And while I can’t help noting the Katikati Avocado Expo is coming up next weekend, I was planning to skip the “20 Interesting Facts About Avocados” column and move straight on to music.

It sounds like I need to get in quick. Pretty soon everyone reckons there’ll be a bypass around the town so no one except residents, mural artist and connoisseurs seeking out a drink from Finer Wines will go there any more…

That’s certainly what it sounded like after Richard O’Brien took the stage at the avo fest with a rallying cry of: “Bypass! Bypass! Bypass!”

And, to be fair, that set of traffic lights in the middle of town has become a significant impediment to passing through, whichever direction you happen to be travelling. The thing about a bypass, of course, is that – as noted – many people would miss out on seeing what really is one of the prettiest little towns in New Zealand.

I take my metaphorical hat to k the residents, only $99! ets Tic er.off m m su r e v o council, random community organisers who are ts fligh responsible for this. With the many murals, a gratuitous statue on the town bench, and some lovely open green spaces, the town is everything one could hope for.

And the next music event happening is another feather in the town’s cap, being part of the annual JamesRAy. Katikati Twilight concerts. This one is the second for anyone going to one of these shows for the year. It takes place tomorrow, January 28 – and the first time will be amazed.

The Haiku Reserve

Sounds delicious.

Kick-off is at 6pm, tickets are $20 on the gate.

Two weeks later, on February 11, the next twilight concert is ‘Broadway to BoogieVille’, a variety show comprising local performers who cover a plethora of music from the world of film and theatre through to the blues and more.

Bluegrass and beyond

If you want to go a little further than Katikati, The Long Table, which regularly hosts the Katikati Folk Club’s open mic nights, is having an evening of music during Waitangi weekend. Bluegrass and Beyond is playing from 6pm-9pm on Sunday, February 5, and are well worth seeing. There’s be pizzas and burgers. There are no door sales; tickets are $15 from hello@ thelongtable.nz or 0294151956.

The ever-excellent folk club itself is currently on hiatus but starts again in March and has some really good stuff coming through, including American band Hungrytown and homegrown singer Mel Parsons.

But the big folk bash is a little closer than Katikati. The Aongatete Festival – Folk Under the Figs – is on the weekend of February 24-25 and has a terrific line-up, including the Pipi Pickers, English singer Kirsty Bromley, Penni Feather, David Shanhun, Jon Sanders, and Hamilton family band Rhode Workz. If you’re into folk music, keep the weekend free. I’ll look at it in more depth in a couple of weeks.

Truth, beliefs and sincerity matters…

Have you ever sincerely believed something to be a fact and later found it to be wrong?

It may have been a small thing like being sure you did not like a certain type of food until one day you tried it and found you quite enjoyed it.

Did your sincerity make you right? Of course it didn’t.

Sincerity is never a substitute for accuracy, both are needed. Sincerely believing you are heading in the right direction will not make you reach your destination if you travelling the wrong way.

So truth matters, beliefs matter and sincerity matters, but how much?

Within Christianity there is a wide variation of beliefs, and each person needs to decide how important his or her beliefs are. Jesus showed that just being a Christian was not enough, his followers had to be true Christians.

And that makes very good sense too—if you claim to follow Jesus, you are trying to be like him.

So what did Jesus say about the importance of belief and the teachings we believe?

Jesus said to the crowds who were listening to him: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven (Matthew 7:21)”.

Jesus pointed to the religious leaders of his day and condemned their practice as wasting their time: “They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men (Matthew 15:9)”.

Building on a firm foundation

It has to be perfectly positioned, perfectly shaped and firmly laid to provide the correct balance and strength for the walls and the rest of the structure.

If the cornerstone is askew or faulty in any way, the rest of the building will be compromised.
