There are roof tile fragments embedded in the shocks and what looks like the remains of a TV antenna has been removed from the leaf springs.

We recommend complete overhaul of the

suspension and beefing up of the shock absorbers. And in future, you will need to take more care when parking.

Which brings us to the handbrake. Our mechanics report that it is showing major wear and they estimate it has been left on for the last 24,900 miles, which oddly enough, is approximately the circumference of the Earth. We have taken the liberty of installing handbrake warning lights. These are multicoloured, some lantern shapes and others in various fruit configurations, which blink and flash to remind the operator that the brake is engaged.

There has been considerable damage to the electronics, including the satellite navigation system, apparently caused by the spilling of beverages on the control console. We have therefore installed gimballed drink holders and Tommy Tippee cups on the dashboard.

I am sorry we are not able to extend the cargo capacity any further, particularly since the boom box takes up so much space. Perhaps if you did away with the CD changer playing Jamaican rum drinking songs and Des O’Connor’s Christmas Favourite Singalong, there’d be more room.

We realise from the attached market survey report that your client base has increased since last year, but we suggest that you follow the lead of a couple of our other clients in related lines of business (E. I have taken the liberty of sending some photos of the vehicle to my cousin Marcus in Ponsonby who is a colour and design specialist. He and his partner Sebastian have just made a beautiful job of redecorating their Citroen in a lovely combination of purple and pink with sheepskin and silk trim. I’m sure they can come up with some helpful suggestions to brighten up the old buggy, which is just SO seventies. They’ll help you accessorise, too.

The chromed chain link steering wheel might have to go, and for the sake of Political Correctness we need to dispense with the Barbie with the flashing boobies dangling from the rear view mirror and the bumper stickers that read “I Might be Fat, but I’m in Front” and “Honk if you’re Horny.”

As we are only a small team of volunteers, it will be necessary to have our staff working around the clock in order to have this vehicle ready for service, according to the deadline imposed by the contract. I must point out however that you’ve had nearly 12 months notice to get this right, and suggest that next year any such major repairs be started in sufficient time. We’re all busy at this time of year.

If repairs cannot be effected within these time constraints, I have secured an undertaking from Mr Rudolph of the towing company (although I hear they are quite dear) that he and his team will again be available at short notice to tow your vehicle to complete your contract deliveries, should it not be possible to operate on its own motive power.

“Take special care,” says the AA’s Simon Douglas. Special because ‘Deadly December’ is the most lethal month on our roads and the worst of it is still to come.

“In the last five years December has averaged nearly 31 deaths on the roads, well above any other month.” This December there has been 13 deaths, eight less than last December. But there’s no room for complacency because the reality of the road toll is fluctuations.

A week can go by with no lives lost and then there will be a couple of “bad ones” to drive up the toll and help Deadly December win its dark reputation.

And with the death toll running at well more than 300 for the year, the AA points out the most dangerous part of Deadly December is still

The official holiday period road toll for 2016-2017 starts at 4pm this afternoon, December 23, and ends 6am on Wednesday, January 4, next year.

The AA reminds motorists that, as in recent summers, the speed tolerance threshold will be 4km/h through December and January.

Omokoroa crash victim named

Mary Rangiororea Donald has been named as the woman killed in an Omokoroa car crash.

The 92-year-old died in a single-vehicle crash on Anderley Ave, just before 7.30pm on Friday, December 16.

The road was closed for a couple of hours as Police investigated the scene. The cause of the crash is still under investigation and Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to contact Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300.

Emergency landing

Tauranga pilot Colin Loker made the decision to land on Papamoa Beach on Sunday after experiencing some trouble while in the air. The Tecnam Sierra P2002 was carrying four people when it made an emergency landing on Papamoa Beach on Sunday afternoon, December 18.

Police say the plane experienced fuel issues, forcing the pilot to make the beach landing.

“No one was injured and the matter has now been handed over to the Civil Aviation Authority.”

Family of five escapes house fire

A family of five was forced to flee their home after a fire took hold just after midnight on Saturday, December 17. The family noticed the fire in their Te Hono St home about 12.30am, when a fire in the garage spread into the main building. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crying ‘wolf’ with warnings

Saturday’s late-night tsunami warning for the Bay of Plenty wasn’t needed, says Emergency Management Bay of Plenty director Clinton Naude.

The warning was prompted by a 7.9 Papua New Guinea earthquake, which occurred late on Saturday, December 17.

Large earthquakes similar to this one happen quite often in the Pacific, and it’s common for a tsunami threat to be issued as soon as Ministry for Civil Defence and Emergency Management are notified about an earthquake, says Clinton.

But he says it’s important not to cry wolf. “We don’t want people to become complacent about text alerts due to too many false alarms.”

Remember the four metre rule

With the avocado picking season underway in Bay, orchardists are urged to look up before they work to ensure they are well clear of power lines.

In a bid to help keep orchardists safe, electricity lines company Powerco is emphasising the ‘fourmetre danger zone’ safety message for people harvesting fruit near power lines.

Orchards often have overhead power lines near or running through them, and horticultural workers have some of the highest levels of injury and fatalities from power lines.

Unfortunately, this statue was damaged some years ago. And although the intention was to repair it, the original has disappeared.

Local historians think if a good photograph of the statue could be found, it may be possible to replace it.

Can The Sun’s readers help? It would also be interesting to know just when the statue was taken away.

“It’s been so long since the statue was there that even our longest-running staff don’t know why it was removed,” says Tauranga City Council parks and recreation manager Warren Aitken.

“It’s a real mystery and we’d be interested to find out.”

Prior to 1830, the land along Cliff Rd was used as living quarters and gardens

by Maori. Since then, according to the Tauranga Kete website, it’s been unoccupied, fortified, used for a gym, then for a police force who were stationed there, and later used to graze horses.

More recently a glass house was built around the 1940s and later converted into a begonia house.

According to the Tauranga Kete website in 1958 the Bay of Plenty Floral Festival Society asked the council for permission to

develop the area into a rose garden.

“The lily pond, with a statue of Ceres, the Greek goddess of plenty, was part of the original design.

“The statue was made of cast stone

by Mr Rauby, an Auckland sculptor.

The completed garden was handed over in February 1960. The Floral Festival retained an interest in the park and, in 1963, the year we became a city for the first time, built a colonnade along the eastern and northern sides.”

The Rose Gardens were named after Benjamin Cockie Robbins, who was Mayor of Tauranga twice, from 1912-1915, and

again from 1929-1933. He’s recorded to have been responsible for the Omanawa Falls electricity scheme, water reticulation, and the building of the Town Hall, which was demolished in 1987.

Robbins Park is a historic reserve and adjacent to the Historic Monmouth Redoubt and the new police station, site of the first Armed Constabulary.

It overlooks the railway, harbour, airport and has views to the Port of Tauranga and Rosalie Liddle Crawford Mauao.

Tauranga is where it is happening, according to Todd As 2016 draws to a close it is a great time to reflect on the remarkable year that has been.

I’m so proud to have had the opportunity to represent the Bay of Plenty in what I have no has been a record year. We are a vibrant and thriving community and all of the statistics show it – but the secret must be out because our population has grown to 124,600.

As a region our GDP is up more than 4.4 per cent, unemployment is at 4.3 per cent,

the number of people receiving Jobseeker support has decreased by 10 per cent and the number of jobs being advertised are up by nearly 50 per cent.

Our economy is upbeat, and you can tell when you speak to people.

We are building hundreds of affordable homes in Special Housing Areas, and retail trade is up by more than double the national average at 7.4 per cent.

I’m sure this will have been bolstered by a healthy Christmas

trade. I hate to throw so many statistics at you, but I’m hoping they will be used at Christmas barbecues all over the Bay to brag to all of the out-of-town visitors that seems to stop by at this time of year; that Tauranga is where it is happening.

We really are very blessed to live in the most beautiful place in the country – and before they re-tort, yes both the Chiefs and the Steamers were knocked out in their semi-finals. But we couldn’t have everything, could

we? There is always 2017.

From myself, Michelle and the kids, and of course Maisy our dog, we wish you a very merry Christmas spent with friends and family. I, for one, am looking forward to a little less time in Wellington and a little more time enjoying the sun on Papamoa beach.

While most of us will be scoffing the bad but tasty foods of the festive season – and taking a kip on Christmas afternoon – Makayla Daysh will be showing discipline in diet and exercise.

The Tauranga 21-year-old is aiming to excel at three sport codes – and has a raft of opportunities coming up now and in the New Year that could form her path to becoming a national sevens player, a basketball representative or ultimately a Black Fern.

Makayla was named in the Bay of Plenty women sevens squad of 17 at the end of November. “We’ve played a few a tournaments and won them,” says Makayla, who has been selected by Bay sevens women’s coach – Rotoiti’s head coach – Victoria Grant.

Unfortunately, she hasn’t had much game-time after injuring herself in the Bay championship match in Paengaroa. But it’s not as serious as first thought.

“They thought I’d fractured my

ankle – but it just turned out to be a bad ankle sprain.

“So I’ve been out for the last two weeks.” But there’s time to redeem herself. There’s 2017 Provincial Sevens Tournament on January 7 at Blake Park, Mount Maunganui, where Makayla is playing and hopes to be named for the 2017 National Sevens being held at Rotorua International Stadium on January 14-15. “Within the squad 12 get named – and outsiders can get called up if a space becomes available due to injury etc.”

But she’s got other options.

Makayla is playing basketball too. “We have Maori nationals in Rotorua at the end of January. I’m in the Tauranga team for that.

“And I’m coaching the Under-11 Maori boys’ team as well. That’s pretty cool.”

But her ultimate goal is actually to one day to become a Black Fern.

Makayla was away for last season’s rugby, having come back from America in July where she was playing basketball.

“I did play one club tournament last year and got picked up to play for the Volcanix first XV team for their last game against Wellington.

“So I’m hoping to play club rugby next year, possibly for Rangataua, and try for the Bay Volcanix team again – because this is where Black ferns get selected or at a provincial level.” So how many hours does clock up training per week?

“Oh, quite a few,” admits Makayla. “But I love it.”

Basketball came first in life as a 10-year-old, and she found a passion for sevens in high school, when it was introduced by Paul Pou at Tauranga Girls’ College when she was Year 11.

“That’s where I picked it up.”

What’s the pull from rugby over the other two codes? “I’ve just always played it,” says Makayla, who admits she’s not a girly girl.

“And it’s pretty big in our family.”

So during the festive season Makayla will be keeping fit and eating well to hone her chances of making multiple code teams for 2017. “We got our training schedule – and every day we will train. We only have Christmas Day and New Year’s day off. And it was suggested by Paul, our rugby coach, to go for a run on Christmas night.” But Makayla thinks “it’s worth it”.

Getting hip to the Hipstamatics New Zealand’s soul supergroup Hipstamatics is hitting the road and touring their fun and funky new live set this summer.

What’s promised to be a ‘musical experience not to be missed’ the dynamic 11-piece Auckland band is kicking off their 11-show Soul Revue Tour at Waihi Beach Hotel on January 5 before heading south to play at Mount Maunganui’s Totara Street performance venue on January 6. Drawing inspiration from the likes of James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Daptones and Tower Of Power, the tour will feature Hipstamatics’ tributes to the classics plus original new music from the band – all presented in the style of a Soul Revue.

“Soul music is really honest, it’s that type of genre which literally speaks straight from the soul and heart,” says Hipstamatics vocalist and manager Dillon Riesterer.

“We all love it because it’s that feel good music you know, and we’ve found it really appeals to Kiwis too; all of us are funky cats,” says Dillon.

“Everyone in Hipstamatics is really excited about going away on tour, having a really good time and playing our original music. This year we really wanted to push our original material, create a show that’s different and tour it around New Zealand.”

Original songs by the band that’ll feature during the tour include ‘Thank You For the Flowers’, ‘Soul Music’ and their new single ‘Stop’. Formed in 2010 and

But Tauranga resident Patricia Steer worked through the year to help bring some Christmas cheer to servicemen and their families.

Entries are now open for a recently-launched photography exhibition designed to showcase the Western Bay of Plenty.

The TrustPower Photographic Exhibition launched on December 20 invites budding or professional photographers to submit photographs taken in the WBOP that showcase our people and places.

And with more than $10,000 in prizes up for grabs, organisers are hoping to attract some of the Bay’s best amateur and professional photographers to take part.

Downtown Tauranga project manager Sally Cooke says the exhibition is about showcasing the region and our emerging and established creative talent.

“The theme for the exhibition is ‘Our Place to Shine’. Its purpose is two-fold; to showcase the Bay in what we hope will be a visually dynamic large-scale outdoor exhibition for locals, visitors and tourists to enjoy; and as a way of supporting and encouraging both established and emerging creative talent we have in abundance here in the Bay.” A judging panel will select the winning photographs to be displayed in a large outdoor photographic exhibition on The Strand, Downtown Tauranga, from January to April 2017.

Sally says judges will be looking for entries from people of all ages, from amateur to professional and hope to see diversity in the photos.

“There is a condition of entry that all photographs must have been taken within the WBOP and then entrants can choose one of four categories for their photo or photos they are entering: ‘Our People’, ‘Land and Sea’, ‘Our Heritage’ and ‘Emotion’.

“It will be exciting to see photographer’s interpretation of the categories and to see the photos that come into the competition.”

Prizes will be awarded for first and second in the four categories, plus judges will award prizes for a Young Photographers section (18 and under), a Student section (for full-time or part-time students) and a digital section. Cash and travel prizes are up for grabs as well as two ‘Creative Media Internships’ for the winners of the Student and Young Photographer sections thanks to UNO. Magazine, The Weekend Sun and Media Works.

The competition is open from December 20, 2016, until January 20, 2017. The TrustPower Photographic Exhibition opens on The Strand, Downtown Tauranga, from January 27- April 9.

The free exhibition will also include a People’s Choice section asking the public to vote for their favourite photo.

Living and breathing the Bay Dreams It might be one of the newest musical festivals on the block but there’s no denying it – Bay Dreams punches well above its weight.

Presented by Audiology and Pato Entertainment, the multigenre musical festival will have you dancing the New Year in with style at Mount Maunganui’s ASB Baypark Stadium on January 2.

The line-up for next year’s Bay Dreams features international superstars including Yelawolf, Sticky Fingers, Grandmaster Flash, AC Slater and Bizzy Bone sharing the stage with Kiwi acts like Shapeshifter, Katchafire, Kora, Home Brew, State Of Mind, Concord Dawn and many more.

The inaugural festival took place last January, with 5000 tickets sold.

Pato Alvarez and Mitch Lowe grin from ear to ear when they say 15,000 tickets have already been sold to Bay Dreams 2017.

“A lot of festivals will have one headliner – we’ve got three – and the line-up we have must be really amazing because we’ve sold out already,” says Pato.

“We want everyone who’s got tickets to know we’re very humbled and working really hard to put on an awesome show for them.

“We’re going to be bringing you an international level quality show.”

Selling out two months ahead of festival, as far as Mitch knows, is virtually unheard of in New Zealand. “Our vision right from the start has been to produce a multi-genre festival, so the 2017 show is effectively the same concept just triple the size.

Even now when Mitch looks at the poster for Bay Dreams “it still blows my mind” and there’s not a single act he would take away or add to the bill, which he says “is really rare”. Mitch says the 2016 show was organised in roughly three months – vastly different to the seven months of planning and preparation he and Pato have carried out behind the scenes for next year’s Bay Dreams.

“Basically, we’ve expanded Bay Dreams to being much more than just amazing music; we’ve got Little Big Markets running our food market, and we’ve contracted artists as well so people will see full custom stage art design, sculptures and more.” Audiology and Pato Entertainment’s Bay Dreams at Mount Maunganui’s ASB Baypark Stadium is on Monday, January 2.

We all get that feeling. You’re on holiday, drifting around your chosen piece of paradise for summer and suddenly you have a thought pop into your head.

Let’s buy – or build – a holiday home. Many of us act on this impulse. But if you are about to – it’s best you do a few important things first.

Firstly, figure out what you want from your holiday home. Can you afford to build or buy a holiday home? And do you intend for it to only to be used by yourselves?

If you want or need it to be leased out be aware the time period you would probably like to use the property is also probably the peak time for renting it out.

And make sure you still do your homework. Look at the land price trends for the area you’re looking to buy or build in.

If the land value hasn’t increased in several years, and doesn’t look like its changing, you’re probably not going to make a capital gain on your purchase.

Make yourself at home in a historic mansion Built by one of Tauranga’s pioneers John Cuthbert Adams (1854-1932), who was Mayor from 1917-1919, Taiparoro House currently operates as a bed and breakfast.

The vastness of the house is due to the former mayor’s large family – when he died he left behind four sons and seven daughters. Many of his children came of age during the

First World War, in which his sons served. His daughter lost her fiancé at Gallipoli.

She never married, but her sisters held their wedding parties in the garden overlooking the Tauranga Harbour.

Current owners Kevin and Lois Kelly have owned the place since 1991. “We’ve only recently been running it as a bed and breakfast – about 18 months,” says Kevin.

“We leased the property for about six years, and returned three years ago when we freshened the place up.”

essentially as it always has been, the home’s interior has been renovated, including a completely modern kitchen. A conservatory has also been added, although it could easily have been part of the original, such is its keeping with the character of the rest of the house.

The property is listed with the Historic Places Trust, which essentially means anything an owner wishes to do to the house requires a consent and also needs approval from the trust.

“It means if you do any alterations, it must be in keeping with the character of the home.”

The Kellys are the fourth owners. Previously, the house sold at auction for $75,000 – in 1973. In 1990 it was on the market for $390,000.

With its size, stunning views and location, though, it’s likely to go for a little more in 2016.

The magic of Mount Hard Park Drift, drag, street and race cars, old school low-riders to high-end imports – the open invitation to show any vehicle makes 2016’s Mount Hard Park an easy sell to punters.

Event manager Marc Patton says the move will mean they’ll have space to park up at least 450 vehicles in the fourth Mount Hard Park event.

“Brewers Field limited us in terms of space. Now we’ll have we’re hoping hoping for for more space for cars – and we’re anything from 2500 spectators upwards to come through the event.

Marc says there is no limit on cars the public want to enter.

“If you want to show your car, you can put it in. It’s a completely open event.”

And that’s the magic of Mount Hard Park.

It gives car enthusiasts the opportunity to display their pride and joy in a secure environment with like-minded people.

“We’ve got everything from stock cars coming to D1NZ pro cars and everyday street cars,” says Marc.

Kaimai Ridgeway Trust chair Roger Montgomerie says a recent working bee saw volunteers install boardwalks, with material being flown in, on the track south of the Old North/South Junction to improve the track as far as the slip scar stream.

“This was a combination effort involving seven members of the Waikato Tramping Club and three

keen Tauranga supporters. Two walked in on Friday night with the main party arriving in midmorning Saturday,” says Ray. “We beavered away resulting with a much improved high grade track through the infamous Te Rereatukahia Hut mud trench section. We then focused on improving the track further south by widening it, crowning it up and installing side drains and numerous cross drains.

“With time to spare we worked further to the south fixing some tricky section and dealing with boggy areas.”

to complete the last 300 metre section of vegetation clearing, way to the north through to the top Cashmores junction – three hours each way.

“It was a great effort and now we can say that the Ridgeway section is safer and clear all the way through Weekend to the Waipapa Track.

“However, it is a very rugged section and is only for well experienced people. There are tricky sections to navigate with better marking still required.”

Your local pharmacy can help this summer As the holiday season heats up, people are being reminded to pop into their local pharmacy for help on a broad range of medical issues.

The holidays are a time of fun and relaxation but can also be a time when accidents occur.

Usual routines can be disrupted, so if you have missed or forgotten your medication, or have had a medical mishap, talk to a pharmacist for advice.

As always, they will refer you on to a local doctor or other health practitioner when needed. Pharmacists can offer help and advice in an array of situations, says Pharmacy on Cameron pharmacist and director Faheem Musa.

“Community pharmacists can provide a wide range of medicines to treat a variety of conditions,” says Faheem. “These include sunburn, sprains, grazes, strains, minor skin infections, gout attacks, conjunctivitis, urinary tract infections, vaginal thrush, migraines, mild eczema, fungal infections such as athlete’s foot and ringworm, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, scabies, mouth ulcers, cold sores, indigestion,

heartburn, hay fever and head lice.

“Some pharmacists are even authorised to sell the emergency contraceptive pill under certain circumstances.”

Faheem says people should ensure they have a good supply of their medicines during the Christmas and New Year period; getting new prescriptions from their doctor, and picking up their repeats.

Those who are going away should also make sure they have a list of their medicines with them, including doses.

If you lose your medications, again, a local pharmacy could help.

“Under special circumstances, pharmacists can provide an emergency three-day supply of medicines if you lose them, provided you have written proof that your doctor has prescribed them for you,” says Faheem.

“This is not subsidised by the Government so there is a charge for each medicine.”

People are reminded they should never share their medicines, no matter how similar another person’s symptoms are to theirs.

“Do not share your medicines,” says Faheem. “Medicines can have serious side effects – and how would you feel if you shared your medicines with someone and they suffered a bad allergic reaction?”

A wide range of medical help and advice is available from your local pharmacy, says pharmacist Faheem Musa.

People are advised to phone their local community pharmacy for opening hours during the holiday season.

Visit your community pharmacy for expert healthcare and advice, to stock up on your medicines for the holiday period, if you lose your medications – and never share your medicines.

Cooking fun and visual Christmas food Christmas is nearly upon us. So our annual attempt to eat and drink our own body weight is nearly upon us.

As the whole summer stretches before us we get the glorious break of the season to reconnect with our family and friends around the table, which is groaning with treats, and best of all we can put our guilt on hold until the New Year.

This is the time of year for food that is fun and

visual, with many hands stretching across the table to help themselves. Beer can chicken is one of those fun dishes that is a great centrepiece of the classic barbecue long lunch. And accompanied with some lovely, festive, colourful salads and breads is an easy way of feeding the tribe and having fun.

Beer can chicken

Serves 6 The trick here is to use the simplest beer you like, and shake the can first. If you hear something solid in there then don’t use it as the solid bit is plastic, which is there to give

the draught effect and will melt.

Ingredients: 1 freerange, corn-fed chicken 1 can beer – try Speight’s Old Dark Lemon Pepper Avocado Oil Fresh herbs, chopped (optional) Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method: Drink half the can of beer! Top up can with mixed oil, herbs and seasoning. Season skin of chicken with salt and pepper, place on top of beer can and put on a preheated barbecue.

Close lid and cook for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on size of chicken.

Core temperature should reach 75 degrees Celsius – or 85 degrees Celsius for reheated chicken. And voila! Here’s a fun and visual Christmas dish!

Got leftover festive ham?

Christmas is that special time of the year when you go the extra mile to make your festive dinner much more delicious than normal.

And on most Christmas tables will sit a large beautifully cooked and glazed ham. But the entire thing never usually gets eaten on Christmas day.

So we spend days afterwards picking and chopping at it – and while coming up with new ideas to make sure it gets used up may seem daunting.

But don’t fear – here’s some neat ideas from Freedom Farms to prepare, store, cook and reinvent the Christmas ham.

Before Christmas:

Once you’ve got your ham, store it in the coldest part of the fridge, usually at the back, and keep it in its wrapping.

This will keep it fresh until the best before date.

Make sure you know how you are going to cook and glaze your ham before the big day. Choose your glazes and what will accompany the ham.

Cloves, pineapple rings, honey, soy, oranges and cherries are traditional glaze ingredients – but you could add sriracha, ginger or jalepeno to add a bit of zing.

And roasted potatoes, a big green salad and mustard are

the perfect partners for it.

And store the leftover ham correctly.

Cover the ham loosely with tin foil, a clean damp tea towel or a ham bag.

Even a pillow case works well. Then store in the coolest part of your fridge.

If using a ham bag or tea towel, soak it in water with a couple of tablespoons of vinegar. Squeeze out the excess liquid and wrap the ham loosely. Repeat soaking process every two-three days.

After Christmas:

Now comes the part of trying to use up your leftover ham. Here’s some ideas.

Ham Sandwiches.

Nothing says Boxing Day like ham sandwiches. Whack two pieces of bread together with some big thick pieces of ham, mustard and lettuce and Bob’s your uncle.

Or what about ham penne pasta, frittata, or ham eggs benedict anyone?

Baby boomers want freedom

Once regarded as the end of the road, and ‘God’s waiting room’, retirement villages have undergone a resurgence in recent years, further highlighted by latest survey results.

The Metlifecare Retirement Living nationwide research, undertaken independently during November, shows regionally 68 per cent of Bay of Plenty residents aged 45-plus would consider moving to a retirement village at some stage in their life.

An overwhelming 90 per cent of local participants also said their biggest deciding factor in selecting the right village would depend on the freedom to live how they want and the quality of their housing.

More than half cited community, health and downsizing as being the main reasons they would consider moving to a retirement village in the future.

“It’s evident that people, particularly the baby boomers, are living active lives for longer and longer,” says Metlifecare’s CEO Glen Sowry. “With this in mind we have been creating retirement villages that allow this engaged generation to stay active and social by providing more of what they want.”

Changing perceptions is evident, with Bay of Plenty

respondents mainly describing retirement villages as resort living for retirees, with only four per cent of those surveyed seeing a village as a refuge for lonely widows or widowers.

However, 90 per cent of Bay locals surveyed admitted they were worried about the loss of control over their lives in a retirement village.

“This fear is exactly what Metlifecare has been dispelling with its focus on offering more freedom and independence to residents coupled with resortstyle facilities,” says Metlifecare Somervale Village manager Rhonda Howie.

“Somervale is one of our five villages in the Mount and includes a heated swimming pool and spa, bowling green and croquet lawn, hairdressing salon, games room, library and much more.

“We’re only a block away from Bayfair and well integrated with Mount life.”

Health, lifestyle and downsizing were primary motivators for moving to a village, with 86 per cent of nationwide respondents citing the need for additional support or care as a consideration.

“A Metlifecare village offers the boomers higher density housing with added benefits that people wouldn’t get living on their own in the community and family home,” says Glen.

At Tauranga’s Silver Symposium Seniors Minister Maggie Barry said it was a sector often over-looked and ignored but one that offers many opportunities.

It’s predicted nearly one in three seniors, or more than 400,000 people, will be part of

the workforce by 2051, although employers remain reluctant to hire those aged 50-plus.

Maggie says that is a missed opportunity.

The list of underachieving is endless...

On the question of former Prime Minister John Key’s sudden departure, I will go with Winston Peters’ assessment that the timing is simply not credible and something’s amiss.

All the eulogizing about Mr Key is nauseating, he’s basically achieved nothing as leader in eight years at the helm other than exude a ‘warm fuzzy feel-good’ daydreaming philosophy. Immigration rates a fail, education and health are stuttering, and housing policies are a mess. Key’s National Government’s racebased initiatives on freshwater, marine and coastal, Resource Management Act amendments etc and compelling councils to kowtow to vested Maori interests with the push for unelected race-based representation

Parliament breaks up for two months from mid-December, and surely common sense tells us nothing will be done during that time so why couldn’t Key’s announcement have waited till the New Year? Unless, of course, he is aiming to make the honours list? Whatever the conspiracy theories might be its starting to look like they may have some merit. Mr Key is no loss but those who will replace him now and after the 2017 Elections could be scary stuff so fasten your safety belts. Put in a nice way Key’s departure is a welcome relief.

Are these the same Tamakis who drive luxury end Mercedes while those in the pews take buses?

Well I have a message for the bishop. And it won’t take four pages. Regardless of the value of the antidomestic message bro, it was lost on me and perhaps most people. You may have an audience inside your meeting house but beyond those walls, I suspect few of us give a jot about what you think about anything.

And as for calling on New Zealand men to drop their egos, take a very close look in the mirror Brian.

Celebrating Kiwi feats must be free Sport is inextricably linked to our national and cultural identity as New Zealanders, and we have a once-in-ageneration chance to let the big money fear mongers know we are standing up to claim our birth right.

We already invest $960 million per annum of taxpayer money into sports and recreation in New Zealand. But when it comes to the pinnacle of sport, we either fork out $1000 a year for a pay-TV subscription, or it’s ‘too bad, how sad’ and ‘read about it tomorrow’.

At New Zealand First, we’ve drawn a line in the sand to say: ‘Enough is enough’. If we’re going to pay for it at the grassroots, we should have access at the top too.

And we’re not alone. Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada already

require live and free-to-air access to ‘Games of National Significance’ for their citizens, because they know – and can prove – the benefits are priceless.

Participation in sport builds character, develops discipline, fosters teamwork, builds self-confidence, lowers incidence of obesity and other health problems.

The list goes on. Don’t we want our kids outside and active? Of course we do. A child with local sporting heroes believes he or she has the potential to do great things too. The idea is: ‘If I can see it, I can be it’ only works if ‘I can see it’. There are a number of ways this policy can work, and we look forward to getting into the ‘how’ once it’s in select committee for discussion and public submissions.

Another win for housing investors

Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong have restrictions. Beijing and Shanghai don’t allow non-resident buyers and there is an investigation into the effects of foreign buyers in the Vancouver and Toronto housing markets.

Could National explain why something this important did not get its backing? Anyone who says Chinese money hasn’t compromised our independence must have their head in the sand.

We all need houses, food, clothing, education and healthcare, which is available to all. When Charles Darwin visited these shores in The Beagle, he wrote the land was barren, the natives hostile, and they lived in hovels.

After Maori took over the land from those already here, just what did they do to improve the quality of life?

Actually nothing, for they stripped the land of trees, and ate nearly everything that walked or flew, including the 12 species of moa.

Conservationists they were not, luckily colonists have since done their upmost to restore many species.

We know inter-tribal fighting, cannibalism and slavery were rife, but if it was such a wonderful culture and lifestyle why did Maori leaders first beg King William, and then Queen Victoria, to send troops to put an end to the looming extinction of Maori, especially after the Musket Wars. If Maori want to participate in government then let them put candidates forward for election. It is ludicrous to suggest the 18 per cent part-Maori be given co-governance and it is up to them to be elected like everyone else. We are one nation.

As reported in the media: ‘Human trafficker gets prison term’. The Serious Offences Unit took more than 5000 hours to bring this trafficker to justice. And 5000 hours at $100per hour is a cost of $500,000 at a very minimum. This scumbag is given a sentence of nine years and six months when the maximum penalty is 20 years imprisonment or a $500,000.00 fine or both. Incarceration costs in NZ are $100,000 per year, amounting to a total of $950,000 of taxpayers’ dollars.

I would suggest the NZ court system needs to implement a regime of ‘tough love’ and deport Faroz Ali to wherever he came from, strip him of any citizenship he may hold in NZ and disallow him any further entry into this country. The cost of that may be $500 for a plane ticket and the Corrections budget would be $1.5 million dollars better off.

Learning the three Rs and martial arts They confused ‘martial arts’ for ‘material arts’. And instead of sewing and needlecraft, the girls ended up taking a few hits, a few body shots, in the fight class.

And delivering a few.

“It was funny to start. But they have surprised themselves,” says Te Puke High School teacher Glenn Campbell. “They have stuck with the martial arts despite their initial confusion and disappointment.

And they have enjoyed it.” Two girls with ‘material arts’ in mind are now finely-tuned fighting machines.

Yes, martial arts are on the curriculum at Te Puke High – it’s just one of the options in the school’s FOCI programme, which stands for Focus on Interest. “It’s about engagement and interest,” says Glenn. “Things students would like to choose and do.”

There are your standard core subjects of English, math and science at Te Puke High, there’s also something called SPINS which is the tech and language departments. And then there’s FOCI – pronounced folk-eye and short for focus of interest. It could be something as old school as knitting or at the other end of the spectrum, rocketry, virtual reality or drone driving – all on top of their busy main stream classes.

“If the kids are interested or passionate then they are going to push themselves to do well in that FOCI” says Glenn. The students aren’t assessed – there’s no traditional pass or fail. But there are important life lessons the boys and girls take away from Glenn’s martial arts FOCI option. “You see growth in the kids even though it’s a short intensive course,” says Glenn. “You see

enthusiasm build, you see confidence build, you see support for each other and respect for each other where you may not have seen it before.”

One-hundred minute classes, twice a week for six weeks – jabs, crosses, hooks, straight body punches uppercuts, round kicks – it’s stand-up martial arts at Te Puke High, no blows to the head and no weapons for obvious reasons.

Apparently, they are building selfresponsibility and self-motivation.

“All the words related to ‘self ’ rather than a teacher dictating everything.”

And the word ‘respect’ is bandied about a lot. “Even when we spar it’s about respecting the person you are fighting” says Glenn. “We have quite big mature students physically much smaller. They are able to do that because of the respect thing. At the beginning I don’t think we would have been able to do that.”

And how many kids get the opportunity to give the teacher a licking?

“And surprisingly, it’s not the big macho kids with their bravado who rise to the top.

“Perhaps they don’t think they have anything to prove.” It’s the quieter kids that surprise,

the kids who didn’t appear strong or confident, that are sparring with the teacher.

“They don’t have a reputation to live up to in front of their friends. They’re throwing themselves into it, which is great.”

And the sparring is always monitored by another teacher so it doesn’t boil over.

Glenn says one boy had motivation issues.

“He wasn’t very engaged in the classroom but in martial arts he is one of the most passionate students there, always involved, always having a go.

The transition is amazing to see.”

It changed him and his attitude, and by some accounts, it has flowed over into the classroom.

Some of that passion probably rubs off from a very passionate Glenn Campbell – teacher of English, teacher of English for second language learners and teacher of Japanese. He lived in Asia learning martial arts. Now he’s sharing that experience at the FOCI option.

Gloved up and ready for action - Kathy Sellars behind the wheel of the SunLive car she will drive in the demo derby.

Kathy will step behind the wheel of the SunLive car for the SunLive Baypark Speedway Demolition Derby on Saturday, January 7.

“I’ve never driven on a track before but did grow up driving the local back roads in the days before it was sealed, dodging possums and handling corners,” says the mother-of-two.

Kathy says the daily battle of negotiating Tauranga’s commuter traffic has honed her driving skills, revving up her excitement to take on the derby.

“Driving to work each morning in Tauranga has certainly given me a taste of what it might be like at Baypark Speedway – except on the roads you have to dodge cars and at Baypark I’ll be allowed to hit them – yes!”

The Person of the Year is…

Yep, it’s Graham Clark, who is frontman of Brilleaux and, as of this year, author.

Graham has been tirelessly active on the Tauranga music scene for decades, whether fronting bands, writing, arranging gigs, or creating artwork for posters and albums.

At the beginning of the year he launched ‘The Right Note’, a massive tome and the only comprehensive history so far of the Tauranga music scene, stretching back to the fifties and beyond.

It was a huge achievement, a genuine milestone for Tauranga music. He now has his second book, a biography of Ritchie Pickett, ready for release in the New Year. It is currently being proof-read.

A free Christmas lunch on offer What do an extended family, a group of single women from overseas, a widow, a homeless man and a middle-aged chap on his own for Christmas day all have in common?

They are some of the people who’ve taken up an invite to St Peters Free Christmas Dinner during the last 27 years. And again this year St Peters will have its traditional ham and chicken meal at the church on December 25 – and there will be

presents for the kids and dessert to follow.

“The tables are starting to fill up, so please get your names in to the office this week,” says the St Peter’s Reverend Simon McLeay. “We always manage to serve everyone who turns up, so don’t be afraid to just come on the day; but we would love it if you could register.”

Last year about 200 people were seated for lunch and this year similar numbers are expected. “It’s my favourite part of Christmas,” says Simon.

It’s the 27th free Christmas dinner on December 25 –and it’s starting to fill up.

If you like making the most of Christmas Eve there’s an event in Tauranga that will entertain and keep you up ’til nearly Christmas Day at 12 in the morning!

St George’s Anglican Church is hosting its Midnight Mass and Carols on December 24, starting 11pm and finishing at 12.30am.

All ages are invited to the free event, which is a true celebration of Christmas.

The church also has an earlier service on December 24 from 7pm to 7.45pm for children to learn what Christmas is really about. It will include singing carols and activities.

Faith, hope and love Faith, hope and love, declared Paul in his letter to the Corinthian Christians, will remain for all eternity. And the greatest of these is love!

Most of us would agree that life without love would be a pretty miserable affair. The most basic need we have is to be loved and to love. But how important are faith and hope?

To live with hope is to live a life with a positive expectation for the future. To have no hope is to live life in a state of hopelessness, ultimately leading to misery and despair.

Faith, the bible tells us, is to believe that our dreams and hopes for the future will one day become a certain reality – regardless of the

circumstances. At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, who came into the world to bring certain hope of everlasting life after death for all those who believe.

John put it like this: “God loved the people of the world so much that he gave his one and only son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16)”.

The Gospel is the most loving offer of a glorious hope for the future, which can simply be received by faith.

My prayer is many will believe the good news this Christmas and be filled with a glorious peace, an inexpressible joy and a confident expectation for the future.

What a gift, what a giver!

In the annual frantic lead-up to Christmas Day, many have been searching and shopping for that ‘perfect gift’. Going to great lengths and expense, looking for just the right gift, that conveys the right message of the love of the giver to the receiver.

IT’S ALL ABOUT

When Christmas Day dawns, and those gifts are finally presented, the receiver gratefully opens and enjoys the gifts given them – and receives more than the gift, but a message of the love and appreciation of the giver.

The truth is at this time of year, we have already been given the ‘perfect gift’. No expense was spared because it cost the Father His own Son. For centuries, the Father has been

searching us out, trying to get our attention so that He could present to us His ‘perfect gift’.

A gift is also only really given when it is received. How sad when Christmas gifts are not received for whatever reason. How sad too for the Father of the Universe, when His ‘perfect gift’ is not received.

But, many have received that ‘perfect gift’. The gift of Christ, the Saviour of the world. Given at great cost by a loving Father. How it must thrill God, the Father, to see us receive and enjoy that ‘perfect gift’.

That’s what Christmas is about.

Acknowledging and remembering and thanking God for that amazing and wonderful ‘perfect gift’.

“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given.”

What a gift! What a giver!

A King has been born – this changes everything!

One September night [Not December contrary to popular belief ], on a hillside outside a small town in a land colonised by the Romans, a baby was born. No big deal. No special hospital. No delivery suite. In fact, not even a room in the local hotel – just a bed out the back because the hotel was full.

Oh my goodness. Heaven was so impacted that Angels could not contain themselves and burst through into the night sky with a message, which blew the minds of some very normal Jewish shepherds watching sheep on the hillside.

Oh my goodness. What a change that birth brought. Fantastically rich dudes turned up from Persia (Iran and

Iraq) with presents for a King.

An incredibly simple event. So easy to overlook. So easy to ignore. But it sparked a man – or baby – hunt!

The local King was threatened because a new King had been born.

This simple event, the birth of a baby, changed everything!

The Angels sang: ‘A King is born today’. Wise men came to worship this King with their gifts.

Herod tried to kill this baby – or King – because his Kingdom was threatened. Years later Pilate said: “So you are a King!”. On that same occasion Jesus replied: “Yes, this is the reason that I was born, to prove that I am a King!”. Friends, a simple event easily overlooked, changed History for all time. This Christmas don’t forget to remember that King. He is still alive today.

He still rules His everlasting and ever increasing Kingdom!
