who lost their homes and possessions in a wild bushfire. Heartwarming to see the outpouring of support and kindness from those around them, the sort of response that defines a community.

There’s so much room in the world for good actions, you’d wonder why some find it necessary to behave like proper little shites. Such as the person who stoned to death the chick in a nesting box on the Turret Rd causeway bridge.

The box had been carefully constructed and placed by exemplary citizen Dave, who had seen the plight of nesting birds being blown off the old bridge piles, in the relentless sou-westers. So he made a shelter box, lifted it into place with a pole, and along with many citizens, enjoyed watching nature do its thing.

The only trouble was, no one took into account human nature, doing its thing, in its worst form.

Thieving lowlifes

Lowlifes pinch the van and gear from Waipuna Hospice, one of the most despicable acts possible. Fortunately good samaritans, Farmer Auto Village stepped in to loan the hospice some wheels in the meantime. Oh, the yin and yang.

Then comes the story from a Coastguard crew, on their way to assist a troubled boatie in the waters of Mercury Bay. On the way they spot a bloke in a blow-up toy, no

Privacy or profit?

The marriage of Kiwi icons should have been a heartwarming moment, as Mr and Mrs McCaw’s romance was successfully converted... had it not been for the furore over the wedding coverage.

A ban on photography, citing grounds of ‘privacy’ appears more a tactic to maximise sales value of the event. Couldn’t it have been the perfect opportunity to raise some funds for something worthwhile? Child cancer? Spinal injury rehab? Dementia from concussion? The Keith Quinn Retirement Fund?

I guess the future income of an outstanding sporting couple should be considered worthwhile.

Milking the media

Heartwarming was the actions of an eight year old at the scene of a river rescue, valiantly offering to help administer CPR to the victim. He’d learnt resuscitation at school. Good on ya, mate.

And finally kudos to the good people searching for Harry, the elusive fluff ball who has been living rough since a fireworks freak-out in Bethlehem. He’s been sighted a few times but evades those who want to help him. Keep up the good work, we hope Harry can one day be re-united and re-socialised.

Lighten up, Rogers

Anyway that’s enough deep and meaningful. On with the lighter side of life in the Bay… what you really want to read, especially for those of you with short attention spans, shallow thinking and an unhealthy interest in oddities…

Just when you thought the world couldn’t get any sillier, there’s Te Puke.

Well, we can’t blame the whole of Te Puke, but a bloke from there who has created a pastime called Stupid Robot Fighting.

And yes, it is as silly as it sounds. Read all about it, page 6.

Goofy parkers

“Leave them alone,” was the call from so many on social media, many trying to suggest no-one was really that interested in the event; that evil journalists just keep hounding famous people for the sake of it.

But that ideal was blown away by the massive click rate, making mockery of claims that the general populace isn’t interested in this sort of news and it’s just a huge media beat-up involving the gossip and personal life of the famous; meanwhile the public is stampeding to read more. It’s a fine line that ‘celebrities’ tread when they milk the media when it suits, for fame and fortune, but suddenly demand ‘privacy’ when it doesn’t suit them.

Maybe that’s fair, when the privacy is for the sake of privacy.

But when it’s for the sake of flogging off exclusive photos to a women’s gossip mag, the public smells hypocrisy. There’s something whiffy here, for sure.

Some of you are driving on the wrong side of the road. Stop it. Some of you are parking on the wrong side too, and according to the fuzz, you must be driving on the wrong side to get there. That story’s on page 3.

It’s Lemming weekend in Tauranga, (p11) when normally sane and happy people throw themselves off perfectly good bridges. The reason: two big swim races.

It’s a quaint tradition, kept alive by people who haven’t discovered boats yet. Give them plenty of support. We need to look after our crazy people.

Going against the grain

Parking illegally on Cliff Rd close to Tauranga Police Station and along The Strand.

It’s the difference between a no-nonsense, guntoting California Highway patrolman and our own unarmed, considered and popular top traffic cop Tauranga Police’s Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

The same traffic offence but different country and different attitude. Nothing gives CHiPs cop Monty Hight more pleasure than handing out a ticket for violation of 22502(a) of the California Vehicle Code – parking on the wrong side of the street.

“Nothing gets my attention more – not speeding vehicles, not reckless drivers, not fleeing felons.”

He says it’s utterly unforgiveable that a lazy driver elects to drive on the wrong side of the road and park so they can step onto the footpath and not have to walk around their car to get where they are going.

He doesn’t just want the practice to stop, he wants rid of the perpetrators altogether.

He stops short of suggesting a return to the convict ships but he tells the perps to “go to England

where it’s legal”. Ian Campion is much more conciliatory. He’s more of an ‘educate them’ type, ‘appeal to their better senses’ type, rather than the punitive type.

“It’s important to reaffirm with people that they are required to park on the left-hand side of the roadway”, says our more reasoned Senior Sergeant.

Parking on the right side, which is also the wrong side, is definitely not to be encouraged.

But if necessary, motorists observed transgressing will get ‘pinged’. A fine of $40 thank you.

Patrolman Monty Hight is hardline. “I am certain those not in compliance with the laws have their reasons. But understand that in the morning when you find a citation on your windscreen, the officer also has his reasons.”

And those reasons are the same on either side of the Pacific Ocean.

To get to that illegal park on the wrong side of the road a motorist has to drive across the path of oncoming traffic.

“And whenever you do that there are obvious risks,” says Ian. “It’s an offence and yes, we would deal with it.” Anecdotal evidence

would suggest the offence is epidemic around Tauranga. That’s not our policeman’s experience.

“We see it from time to time and it’s generally people who would prefer not to walk across the road,” says the Senior Sergeant. In other words the “unforgiveable lazy drivers” CHiPs patrolman Monty Hight so vehemently detests.

“I also wonder how many of the offenders are confused tourists or are new New Zealanders from the many countries where you can legally park on the opposite side of the road?” says Ian. It’s incidental that a seasoned The Weekend Sun staffer – he requested anonymity to save incrimination and embarrassment – got his first ever traffic violation for parking his faded red 1965 Morris 1100 on the wrong side of the road in Wellington’s Island Bay. That was half a century ago, suggesting motorists haven’t learned.

He had a good excuse, which got the citation ripped up. The 1100 was his first car and because he wasn’t sure it would start he parked it headed downhill for a jump start.

$1.4B power upgrade on way Powerco is planning to invest $1.4 billion in upgrading the electricity networks supplying Coromandel, Eastern and Southern Waikato, Western Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu, Tararua and Wairarapa.

The investment programme spans a five-year period from April 1, 2018.

Powerco distributes electricity to more than 320,000 homes and businesses in the North Island. Nigel says the programme will see these ageing assets upgraded and replaced with more modern and resilient equipment.

Thieves ransack Waipuna Hospice Thieves who ransacked the Waipuna Hospice depot in Brook St, Tauranga, earlier this week, targeted the tools depot staff use to fi x and repair the donated goods and items before sale.

“This is a major disruption at our busiest time of year,” says depot manager Barry Stiles.

Missing are a socket set, skillsaw, jigsaw, cordless drills, a big power drill, a small arc welder and spot welder. Also missing are a pair of steel-capped boots, and a laptop – all presumed to have been loaded into the missing Ford Transit van and driven away.

Buckle up, don’t be a statistic Police are concerned by the extremely high number of people being killed in crashes who aren’t wearing seatbelts.

Data released by Police recently show 56 unrestrained motorists were killed in crashes on Bay of Plenty roads from 2012-2016, and 44 on Waikato roads.

Nationwide the number of unrestrained motorists killed on NZ roads has nearly doubled in the last two years. Road Policing assistant commissioner Dave Cliff says this is an unacceptable statistic and for that reason all Police districts will be putting extra focus on ensuring seatbelts are worn this year.

Strongman wins fi rst NZ comp It was the battle of the biceps to see who would take out the title as the Bay of Plenty’s strongest man.

In his first New Zealand competition, Australian-based Eddie Williams bested 13 other competitors to take home the title at the Tauranga A&P Show last Sunday.

The 177kg behemoth recorded one of the fastest runs of all time in the farmers’ walk, carrying 200kg 50 metres in 18.87 seconds.

His consistency over the day, recording two firsts and two thirds in the four events, allowed him to place ahead of the current NZ Strongest Man title holder Mathew Ragg.

Boys muscle in to roll new blue turf ‘Home turf’ will have special meaning for the Tauranga Boys’ College hockey players who have spent their summer holidays helping to install the new blue all-weather turf on the school’s hockey pitch.

They are nearing the completion of a unique summer job, with completion looking at mid next week, says project installer Dean Snelgrove from Tiger Turf.

“All our labourers on-site are students and hockey players themselves, which is good as they have a vested interest in doing a good job,” says Dean.

“And they will get the ultimate satisfaction of being able to play on a turf that they helped install come the end of it.

“We are grateful to them. They have given up their school holidays to help us out, and there has been a lot of fine weather when I’m sure they would rather have been at the beach, but they have been slogging away on turf.” He thinks a lot of their pay is destined to be spent of hockey-related costs, fees and trips away etc. The completion date is weather dependent. It needs to be dry for the glue to the rubber underlay to take, and it can’t be too windy. The sheets of carpet 60m by 7.5m are not so easy to roll out if the wind catches them, says Dean.

The product is Wet Pro, an international standard wet pitch that replaces the previous sand-based turf, which is 13-14 years old.

The college doesn’t have the irrigation system set up, but the turf will play fine without it, says Dean. Rolls of the old green turf can be purchased from the college’s business development manager.

Tiger Turf Salesman Adam Cherie says the new turf’s cost is about $280,000.

The first game is expected to be an exhibition match. Tiger Turf has several employees who are former and current Black Sticks, and they have close associations with Midlands Hockey, says Adam.

He understand the college also has good hockey contacts and is looking forward to a fun, friendly match.

“From the board’s perspective it’s been a 10-year plan to replace the turf to have something just that commitment to have something decent for the boys and the community as well,” says Tauranga Boys’ College Board of Trustees chairman Richard Craven.

“It’s probably a quarter of a million dollar project the board’s been planning well for.”

It’s a community asset, says Richard.

“We are really open to sharing with clubs’ junior programmes, club programmes.

“It’s the best hockey facility in the region so we are certainly up for sharing it.”

The richest short-course surf lifesaving event in New Zealand is returning to the Mount this Sunday.

The Omanu Beach Day of Champions is in its 11th year, and offers a combined prize pool of $6000.

Omanu Beach Surf Life Saving Club general manager Michelle Smith says the event is known for its spot prizes, some of which are big ticket items.

“There’s a Sonic ski up for grabs, for instance, which is worth $3500. We’ve also got vouchers from the Waterman Store and Bayfair.”

Michelle says another selling point of the event is its non-stop action.

“What makes this one quite unique compared to other events is it’s a very fast and furious race. We start at 10am with heats until 12pm.

“At 1pm the finals begin, and by 1.30pm-2pm it’s all done and dusted. So from a spectator point of view it’s pretty cool as it’s action-packed, they’re not sitting around all day.”

Significantly, the event also has added meaning for members of the Omanu club.

“What makes this special for us is that it’s also a memorial event for Ian Porteous, a stalwart at the club, who died tragically before the Day of Champions when he was just 44. He was a pretty amazing man and a proud Omanu club member.”

One of the day’s races is thus named after him – the Ian Porteous Iron Man. Michelle is also excited to see more than half of the 100-plus entries are in the teenage groups.

“It’s a testament to the depth of the sport and the upcoming talent. These young men and women have grown up watching this event and seeing some of the best ironmen New Zealand has produced.

“This is their opportunity to get a taste of competing on the same stage as their idols.”

It’s popular with locals, too, with massive crowds turning out.

“People know it’s a great spectator event. Our club is up on a hill, so that’s always jam-packed as people get a good view.”

Putting the ‘stupid’ in Robot Fighting “It’s a bit unusual isn’t it?,” says Stupid Robot Fighting League creator John Espin.

Unusual? Yes. Silly? Totally. Side-splittingly hilarious and utterly addictive? Abso-bloody-lutey.

The Te Puke man has invented a new fighting sport where nobody gets hurt, well, aside from sore checks from laughing and smiling too hard.

Stupid Robot Fighting, as the name suggests, involves two robots made entirely out of junk connected by wire or hot glue smacking the snot out of each other.

The nuts and bolts of John’s creation is thus: two teams of three people are given two hours to build life-sized puppets which are hung in an octagon frame and controlled by people pushing and pulling on poles attached to the robot’s limbs and head.

“Each fight consists of three two-minute rounds, and each round starts with a monologue the operator has to deliver in a threatening manner to the opposing robot operator, which has been written by the other team.

“Every time I’ve fought I end up in a laughing mess because the arms and legs falls off, the head detaches. My hope is for people to think it’s completely silly and have a bit of a chuckle,” says John. Stupid Robot Fighting’s been a three-year labour of love for John and has undergone several developmental phases, with the robots initially created from cardboard, then plywood, and now junk. El Minion is made from old tins and cans, while Optimus Rufus was once a child’s ride-on car.

“I’ve tried to make Stupid Robot Fighting as low-tech as possible. It requires no learning, if you can operate a drill and twist some wire you’ve got everything you need to bash the living daylights out of someone else’s robot.”

Eventually John’s goal is to launch SRFL as a YouTube channel, which will feature a live audience made up of about 30 people who’ll also be in the thick of the action.

pro-wrestling – which will be voted on by the audience and whichever team loses their robot gets a smack in the head with “the penalty chair”.

Members of the audience will also be asked to bring along a bag of junk, which teams can bid for using “the only accepted currency” of home baking, says John.

Make global difference right here at home A Tauranga woman entering a team in the Oxfam Trailwalker this March is asking supporters to make a contribution and a difference by changing behaviour in their everyday lives.

Jo Wills with her Sustainability Options colleagues, brothers Nik and Phil Gregg, and her sister Carol Wills from Stratford, will walk 100km at Whakatane’s Ohope Beach on March 25-26.

And it won’t be easy – the Oxfam Trailwalker is the ultimate challenge, tasking teams of four to tackle 100km in 36 hours or 50km in 18 hours to raise funds to fight poverty.

Jo, who has completed the Oxfam Trailwalker twice already, with 2017’s effort her first in seven years, says it’s a huge physical and mental challenge.

“I’ve seen it break many people, mostly men. I’ve seen grown men slumped down on the floor of a check point tent at 2am just whimpering; my only guess is they didn’t train enough, properly or at all.”

Jo says people and teams do pull out due to many reasons. “Blisters being the number one cause; dehydration, hypothermia, injury and fatigue are others.”

So why is she putting herself

But Jo realises not everyone has the means to donate. “So we have another idea – for people to contribute through their behaviours.”

Jo says Oxfam NZ runs long-term development programmes in Samoa, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Indonesia and Timor-Leste.

“They help people to access safe water and sanitation, to build a sustainable livelihood, to provide

education for their children and to live free from violence. They also respond to emergencies worldwide.”

“And we know both sea level rise and the increase of natural disasters can cause low-lying villages to suffer massive devastating consequences, many of which Oxfam responds to.”

Big Dyls swapping hammer Four Auckland kids will be getting a special surfing lesson from Tauranga’s favourite builder Dylan ‘Big Dyls’ Cossey in Papamoa tomorrow.

Last year ‘The Block NZ’ star kindly offered to teach up to six people how to surf as part of a TradeMe auction in order to raise funds for the Foster Hope charitable trust, which provides care kits to children entering the foster system.

Trust chairperson Louise Allnutt says the auction raised $1000 for Foster Hope and their Waikato branch was able to use this money to supply 36 backpacks to Child Youth and Family in Tauranga to give to local foster children going into care.

“Dylan has been absolutely great. We first met him on ‘The Block NZ’ last year when we had all the teams painting a foster home and he was brilliant.

“He’s also got a background in fostering as his parents used to foster children, so Dylan’s quite connected to the cause and why he’s been involved with us in helping to

fundraise.” Each backpack, which were distributed to local foster children last November, contains toiletries like toothbrushes, soap and shampoo, nappies for babies, underwear for older children, sanitary products for teenage girls, deodorant and age appropriate toys and books.

Foster Hope makes up more than 4000 backpacks a year for children all throughout New Zealand, says Louise.

“Sometimes when children are taken into care it’s 3am and they’re arriving with either with only a hastily packed rubbish bag of belongings, or nothing. So when I heard about their plight, I decided a practical solution was needed and fast.

“My thoughts were that while there is nothing that will emotionally prepare a child for leaving home unexpectedly, a Foster Hope backpack will help with some of those everyday supplies as well as a few provide a few little treats to let them know they are cared for.”

Bay athletes are Halberg finalists

Five Bay of Plenty athletes will learn if they’ve won one of New Zealand’s highest sporting honours next month when the Halberg Awards take place on February 9 at Vector Arena in Auckland.

Tauranga’s Mahe Drysdale (rowing) and Peter Burling (yachting) with Rotorua’s Valerie Adams (athletics), Luuka Jones (canoeing) and Whakatane’s Lisa Carrington (Canoeing) are among 24 athletes nationally to be named finalists for six categories at the 54th Halberg Awards – the nation’s pre-eminent event to honour and celebrate sporting achievements by New Zealand teams and athletes in 2016.

Every dollar from every ticket sold will be donated once again to the charity. “This is our third year with Homes of Hope,” says organiser Pato Alvarez.

“It makes me feel good that the money we give them allows them to care for more children.”

“From those 15000 people, 1500 are expected to travel from overseas from mainly places like Australia, USA , the islands like Rarotonga , Fiji , Tahiti and Europe including France and Germany to name few.

“If you calculate one person spending $500 into the economy that weekend, times 10,000, that’s $5 million.” Music brings people together, says Pato.

Challenge the Bay and NZ in cycling Bay residents have 12 days to sign up to the Aotearoa Bike Challenge – with the region having its own challenge within the national competition.

Sport Bay of Plenty’s recreation team leader Jen Riley says the workplace cycling competition is taking place for the month of February.

“It’s nationwide, fun and completely free. Workplaces sign up to compete against other organisations from around NZ to see who can get the highest number of people at their work riding a bike during February.

“To be included,

participants only need to ride a bike for 10 minutes or more, so the challenge is perfect for all abilities.

In addition, there are some fantastic prizes to be won, including overseas trips!”

And thanks to some extra funding from Tauranga City Council and Rotorua Lakes Council, the Bay of Plenty has its own mini website for the challenge.

“This means we’ll be having a BOP challenge within the wider national challenge, allowing Bay workplaces to see how they’re faring against others in the region.”

“Rowing is a sport that resonates with certain individuals at a very deep level and it gets to be like a calling.” A spiritual take on rowing from Yale University coach David H Vogel.

The experience of Tauranga Rowing Club masters double scullers Richard Rennie and Christina Rowe isn’t nearly as lofty or divine.

But it’s certainly up there.

“When I get back from a good row, the endorphins are charged and I’m really buzzing about the day ahead of me,” says Christina, who is a Te Puke entomologist.

A ‘good row’ entails sculling around the harbour between club HQ at Memorial Park, Rat Island, the rail bridge and harbour bridge – or a full circuit past Maungatapu – 9km in and-a-half hours three times a week. “Yes,

you break a sweat.” And all this as the sun is delivering a new day and before a city has stirred.

As one wag put it, rowers do more before 8am than most people do all day.

“It’s certainly a special time and a privilege to be out there,” says Christina, who, for that short window in any day, owns the harbour and has it to herself.

“It just adds something to my life. If you strike an ebb tide, the harbour will be silky smooth like a glass table top,” says Richard, who is Christina’s double sculls partner.

“It’s a perfect canvas and you don’t want to spoil or waste it. You execute your strokes accordingly.”

It’s a romantic picture they paint. It’s also a pitch for new mature rowers.

“There are very few older rowers in our club,” says Richard.

“There’s a history of people getting to an elite level but then things get in the way – like life,

There will be theory about the bits and bobs of a boat, some of the rich terminology including words like ergometer, rigger, blade, feather and puddles; and the anatomy of a rowing stroke so people maximise their enjoyment and don’t walk away to join a golf club.

“If all those things come together you will experience a sensation of power and smoothness,” says Richard.

“It’s a sensation you may not get elsewhere except in something like dancing, where two people are working closely as one.”

Competition entries for the TrustPower Photographic Exhibition close today, January 20, with the winning photos displayed in a large outdoor photo exhibition on The Strand, Downtown Tauranga, from January 27- April 9.

The competition invited amateur and professional photographers to submit photos that showcase people and places in Western Bay of Plenty. There are four categories: Our People, Land and Sea, Our Heritage, and Emotion.

Downtown Tauranga project manager Sally Cooke says they’ve received hundreds of entries for the exhibition. Sally puts the flood of entries down to the lure of the $10,000 prize pool, including an amazing supreme prize.

“The supreme winner will win, among other things, a return trip to London, Paris, New York or Rome, five nights’ accommodation and the opportunity to have some of their photos, taken on their trip, featured in an ‘UNO Magazine’ travel feature.

“It’s certainly an exciting prize for a budding or established photographer and is helping to attract strong interest in the competition aspect of the exhibition.”

Prizes will be awarded for first and second in the four categories, plus judges will award prizes for a Young Photographers section (18 and under), a Student section (for full-time or part-time students) and a digital section.

And the calibre of entries is outstanding, says Sally.

“We have been absolutely blown away by the photos that have been coming through. We have some incredibly talented photographers here and many of the photos are absolutely breath-taking. I don’t envy the judges; they have their work cut out for them in selecting the winning entries.”

Once entries have been judged, the TrustPower Photographic Exhibition opens on The Strand, Downtown Tauranga, on January 27 until April 9.

The free exhibition will also include a People’s Choice section asking the public to vote for their favourite photo.

Toss, tumble and thrive The Bay Twisters group is ready for an upgrade. Bay Twisters chairperson Rebecca Grigson says the building they currently practise in – and consequently throw girls in the air in – is too small for their growing not-for-profit group.

“Because we throw the girls in the air [we need something higher], but we are quite open to locations now; we’re fine in Tauriko, somewhere like that would be cool.”

Rebecca says they’re looking for a larger space – and she has all of the requirements ready on the tip of her tongue.

“We’re looking for high stud, probably about 400m2 or more, if we could get 500m2 that would be awesome.”

“Obviously with cheerleading being put in the Olympics now, and obviously we hope to have some of our girls represent New Zealand in 2018, at the moment a lot of our girls are being held

“We have about 140 kids now and growing, and we’re also going to be looking at doing a free special needs’ class. And we’ll hopefully be able to open the doors for AIMS Games schools’ cheerleaders.

“If we had a bigger premises we could do a lot more community focus, especially for free,” says Rebecca.

“We just need somebody to help give us that break – even for four or six months – if they could do something, that would be awesome.

“We’re desperate, we’re really desperate.”

Two local teams, Greerton Marist versus Rangataua, will take to the field on May 27 in the name of charity. “We thought playing a local team at home would be the desired option,” says Greerton Marist Rugby Football Club president David Small.

“The last game of the first round of the 2017 BOP Premier Rugby Draw has seen us playing our local rivals and closest allies Rangataua on Saturday, May 27.

“Several of our junior rugby players are

linked to Homes of Hope and we all agreed a localised charity would be better pathway for all,” says David.

“We’re over the moon as a good number of our children are boys and keen rugby players,” says Homes of Hope chief executive officer Hilary Price. “We also need to raise much-needed funds to ensure that these children receive the very best in care, education, sports, cultural and extra mural activities. Investing in their opportunities will ensure great outcomes for them in the future.” The Charity Day is at Greerton Marist Rugby Football Club, Oropi Rd, on Saturday, May 27. There will be 15 specifically-designed playing jerseys auctioned off after the match.

A donation at the gate is encouraged, with all funds going to Zoe Hunter Homes of Hope.

Red zone – You should always evacuate the red zone if there is any sort of tsunami warning, even if it is just a text from your friends.

While Tauranga City Council is looking into different alerting options, a big earthquake is the first warning for the tsunami we are most concerned about. The most important thing is to be aware of the natural warning signs so that you can make your own decision to evacuate straight away if there is an earthquake.

Orange zone – In a formal evacuation for a tsunami that is more than 2 hours away, Civil Defence may ask you to move from the orange zone into the yellow zone.

What about Western Bay of Plenty District Council Evacuation zones?

Yellow zone – A devastating local source tsunami will probably flood the yellow zone. There will be no time for official warnings. After a major earthquake it will take about 50 minutes for this tsunami to reach the coast, plus another 30 minutes to flood the yellow zone.

Exporting value-adding jobs When I see the logging trains heading to the port, I think about all of the jobs we are exporting with them.

In the year ending November 2015 we sent 22,466 cubic metres of wood “in the rough” to China. In 2016 it more than doubled, to 46,000 cubic metres. These are processing jobs we’re exporting. We are currently sitting second to bottom in the OECD for productivity. This needs

When New Zealand First begins to make progress on keeping these valueadding jobs in our country, we are also going to have to find that balance between ‘carrot’ and ‘stick’ policies to make sure previously ‘workshy’ Kiwis show up and do the work. A safety net is not a hammock. We will create jobs that maximise the resources available to us, be they trees, fish, or folk.

“A lot and a lot of fun,” says Ordinary Cadet Dominic Hahunga, enthusing about sea cadets.

‘Ordinary’ by rank only because the 14-year-old cuts a fine dash in his naval sailor’s pie hat emblazoned with TS Chatham, tunic with white land yard, the traditional bellbottoms and those shoes buffed to an official military glare. What’s there not to like about it? It’s part of the reason Leading Cadet Caitlyn Ward joined the sea cadets. “I love the uniform. But really I just wanted to be in the defence forces,” says the 15-year-old Otumoetai College student.

And Dominic, at this stage, has a half an eye on a being a navy diver. So for both these teenagers the sea cadets is not just adventure-filled weekends but a conduit to a military career. Perhaps.

But what is ‘a lot and a lot of fun’? “Well, we go out sailing pretty much every fortnight, we go camping a lot; great fun, great chats, great friendships and we are contributing to a group situation.”

Dominic joined as an army cadet last year. He was part of the Western Bay of Plenty cadet unit. “But

army life wasn’t really my thing so I thought I would give the navy style a go.” He wears that style well and is now as happy as…well, a sailor at sea.

Except TS Chatham is a land-based sea cadet unit and if the uniform and adventure isn’t an attraction, the setting should be. It’s housed in the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club at the extremity of Sulphur Point with million-dollar views of Tauranga Harbour and Mauao – probably multi-million dollar views on the open market. It spills over onto a boat ramp, a white sandy beach and the vast sparkling expanse of Tauranga Harbour. Idyllic, and ideal for launching the unit’s fleet of four sailing vessels.

TS Chatham, with its motto ‘Ready Aye Ready’, is bricks and mortar and above the water line but it’s regarded as a ship. The sailors salute when arriving or boarding and leaving or disembarking even though their gangplank is a metal doorframe. Tradition is adhered to. Read more at www.theweekendsun.co.nz

“Power lifting is my thing at the moment. I’m a competitive power lifter, which means I’m involved in competitions locally and a little further afield.”

She trains at a gym in Greerton on a regular basis, and is gearing up for a competition where she plans

Councillor looking forward to 2017 At the start of a new year it is time to set some targets to achieve as an elected regional councillor. I will just highlight four.

My first priority is to improve our public transport system in Tauranga.

We really do have a big problem here, and improving our bus patronage will also help our increasing road congestion. Short term it isn’t about encouraging different modes of transport, but more about developing a bus system that is affordable, time-reliable and time-effective.

One of our current key performance indicators for our bus service is taking the bus shouldn’t be more than twice as long as taking a car.

This is plain nonsense, and we need to be much more ambitious than that if we want increased patronage.

Watch this space.

My second New Year’s resolution is to crack down on farmers that continue to breach environmental standards. Ninety-five per cent of farmers uphold excellent environmental standards, and the few that don’t need the book thrown at them. Enough is enough, and we have to get tough on polluters. Breach your consent and expect to pay the consequences. I’m sure I can get strong councillor agreement to a “one strike and you are out” policy. I was a farmer for 17 years, and am a strong farmer advocate – but breaching

consents and pollution has to stop.

My third resolution is to strongly back the building of a purposebuilt coastal marine research centre. This would be a huge boost for this region, and Professor Chris Battershill needs our support to increase the efficacy of his research. The potential of our Bay of Plenty coastal waters for pharmaceutical discovery alone is huge, and Tauranga needs to become a world leader in marine science. My fourth resolution is to continue to advocate for a revitalised CBD for Tauranga City.

The building of a university campus will be a gamechanger, but we have to go much further. I truly believe a stadium on the Tauranga Domain would be another. Cardiff, in Wales, has proven a downtown stadium doesn’t need carparking; in fact it would be a detractor. We need attendees to visit our cafes and bars, both before and after matches – to boost our local economy. Let’s all get behind these great examples of regional development. These ideas are affordable for New Zealand’s fifth largest city. Please support my vision. Be brave. Just do it. “He’s in training for a 100km Tarawera ultra-marathon in February or March. He’s doing a lot of kilometres at the moment and he seems to do pretty well,” says Julia.

Readers learn the legends behind the names Nick Scott couldn’t find a guide to Maori place names – so the Greerton resident wrote one.

While backpacking in Whakatane he asked some European travellers if they had heard the story behind the name Whakatane. They hadn’t.

“I told them the story, and they loved it, so I told them there are lots of stories attached to New Zealand place names. They said they wished someone had told them that earlier.”

Nick investigated what information was out there about the history of Maori place names, and found while there were reference books around, the information wasn’t in the form most people could use.

The keen student of Te Reo Maori, which he studied at school and Te Wananga o Aotearoa, has now published ‘A Traveller’s Guide to Maori Place Names’.

“Aside from the history of the names, there are tips for travellers, pointing out places of interest to backpackers, and lots of photos.”

Nick’s book details the pronunciation and translation of each place name, together with any stories or legends associated with the name.

Researching the book turned up some interesting discoveries. “One of the early explorers, Ihenga, was the grandson of Tama Te Kapua, the commander of the Te Aroha canoe. He did some fascinating things around Rotorua.”

According to the history books, as an

explorer Ihenga discovered and named Lake Rotoiti, Lake Rotorua, and the island Mokoia, which was the homeland of Hinemoa and Tutanekai.

Nick’s research suggests when Ihenga arrived at Lake Rotorua, someone was already there. “So he made a shrine, like the one that was already there, made it out of really old wood, and then said: ‘Look, I was here first’.”

Maori place names often give away aspects of the people who named them.

“Tia, who was also from the Te Aroha canoe, came in from the Nick Scott has written a guide to Maori place coast, across the Waikato River, names in New Zealand, including a pronunciation and thought he was the only guide and the stories behind the names. one there,” says Nick.

Two in race for Te Puke by-election Two people have put their hat in the ring for the upcoming Te Puke by-election this February 2017.

Richard McNair and Ron Spratt have been nominated for the empty Te Puke Community Board seat.

The vacancy was prompted

by Mike Lally and Grant Dally being elected as Maketu-Te Puke Ward councillors in the local body elections last October, which saw them ineligible to also be Te Puke Community Board members.

Western Bay of Plenty District

Council’s Maketu-Te Puke Ward will receive a postal ballot from next Thursday, January 26, onwards.

Voting documents can be returned by post or hand-delivered to all WBOPDC council offices from January 26 and to February 16 during normal office hours, and on February 17 until noon.

A person can apply to enrol as either a residential or ratepayer elector up to February 16 – the day before the close of voting.

Beach access for all Mount Maunganui could lead the country in having an access mat that enables wheelchair access to the beach.

That’s if Metro Marketing’s managing director Michelle Whitmore has her way.

Michelle, with the backing of Tauranga City Council, is proposing other businesses or service organisations join her in supporting the $15,000 project.

Metro Marketing’s Christmas initiative was to start the ball rolling with a $2000 gift. Her philanthropic offer and challenge to other businesses comes after 60 metres of the 1.5 metre-wide polyester matting was rolled out at Mount Maunganui as a trial on December 10-11, 2016.

Tauranga City Council community development advisor Dani Jurgeleit says the AccessMat’s Australian distributor had left the model behind to give council the opportunity to seek funding.

The mat, which costs about $2500 per 10 metre roll, works well on soft sand and undulating surfaces.

Christina Zingel was holidaying in Sydney and left especially to come dancing in Tauranga. Her commitment’s easier to understand.

The 16-year-old’s been dancing since she was five.

Christina doesn’t just move, she dances; life is a dance step.

Harry and Christina were two of nine kids who turned out for The New Zealand Dance Company’s summer school at the Dance Education Centre in Matua this week.

“You are moving really well. You are moving really well together,” encourages tutor Carl Tolentino. And ‘you’ being Stella Grace Seawright, Summer Nicholas, Lucy Pepper, Emily Wahab, Sharvon Mortimer, Samuel Tomaszyk, Emma Camron and Harry and Christina.

And they were having a YEP moment – a Youth Engagement Programme – an inspiring and creative five-day workshop of dance – contemporary dance, hip hop, repertoire, composition and choreography. It was entitled ‘Embracing our Environment’ because a lot of it happened outside.

“Love it,” says the footballer who came from Waiheke Island for the experience. He loved the dance but especially how it impacts his football.

“Agility, flexibility, power in the legs,

plyometrics.” All transferable to his beloved football. “It’ll improve my overall ability.”

“And we have watched his improvement since day one. It’s his co-ordination,” says Carl.

Just nine young dancers.

“But you have to remember this is the middle of summer, the middle of the holidays,” says Carl. “So it’s great fun and a great turnout.”

The workshop was after dancers of all abilities aged 11-plus. It got them. Some have had zero to little experience of dance – the boys had none – and some of the girls were into ballet and jazz.

“I love contemporary dance but have never been to a contemporary workshop,” says Christina Zingel.

“I have grown as a dancer, I have really pushed my boundaries.”

The workshop ended today with a performance for friends and family – the culmination of more than 30 intensive, inspiring and creative hours of dance tuition from NZ Dance tutors Carl, Katie Rudd and ‘local girl’ Chrissy Kokiri.

The vision of NZ Dance is to connect people with dance by staging contemporary dance in a highly engaging way and different.

A spectacle that will be a little different to behold, says one of Tauranga Medieval Faire’s organisers Andria Goodliffe. But, says Andria, they’re “not that good at counting” so the final number of deaths is yet to be seen. “Some of those will be examples of how medieval people could have died, and it could be something as simple as getting a splinter that got infected.

“Because there was no antibiotics [back then], and although they’re supposed to be more robustly healthy, there would have been things that don’t bother us overly much now that would kill them – like the flu. “And childbirth – very dangerous, childbirth.”

But aside from the doom and gloom of death, this year’s Tauranga Medieval Faire will have a range of much safer activities for people to partake in.

From archery to dancing and everything in between, the Tauranga Medieval Faire will be like stepping back in time. “And

the Norsemen are coming and they bring with them some fantastic leatherwork and watching them in combat, you just see some of the most amazing ways to die,” says Andria. “One of the positive things about that of course is that though we’re going through what happened in history, we have the major advantage of actually not killing the re-enactors.

“My goodness that boy can jump!” is usually the response from the audiences watching Jake Gisby.

A former pupil of the Dance Education Centre in Tauranga, Jake – who performed as ‘Basilio’ from ‘Don Quixote’ – placed second at the New Zealand National Young Performer of the Year 2016 competition.

“An outstanding achievement making Jake the best male dancer in NZ at this prestigious competition,” says director Debbie Gooch.

Debbie reminisces Jake’s first visit to the Dance Education Centre at age nine. He came with his two sisters and travelled five days a week from Putaruru.

“With extensive training at DEC, 16-year-old Jake was accepted to three excellent schools in Australia and NZ School of Dance where he was an associate for three years prior.”

Debbie says Jake’s winning personality, ability to spin and jump has opened his pathway towards a dance career.

“Recently awarded an Adastra Foundation Scholarship to support tuition costs, Jake can’t wait to start full-time training at NZSD. “The Dance Education Centre helped Jake bring his dream to reality. Watch out for this fresh NZ talent.”

New careers for the future

– potential to work from home Flexible working hours, more time with family, no petrol costs, no public transport fares and no traffic queues – they’re all benefits of working from home.

One career allowing you to earn a living in your own time without leaving the house is the remotebased medical transcriptionist, who transcribes the patient notes that doctors and medical professionals dictate.

Medical transcriptionists need an in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, diseases and pharmacology as well as fast and accurate typing skills.

Traditionally, medical transcriptionists have worked in a hospital or specialist doctor setting.

But Sue’s Computer Training Co. has come up with an online training programme, which will qualify people to become medical transcriptionists.

This NZQA accredited Level Four online training programme has been adapted to include New Zealand content so that graduates will be qualified to work in both the NZ and United States environments.

“We have our own facilitators who will help our students achieve the high standards required by the course material,” says owner Sue MacDonald.

“If there are former secretaries or nurses looking to develop a new career, then their past knowledge would be invaluable.”

Father and son thrilled with results NCEA results came out this week, and at the Graham household in Tauranga both father and son logged on in anticipation of seeing how many credits they got. ‘They’, because father Fraser teaches maths at Aquinas College.

It’s often forgotten that NCEA results are a big deal for teachers, too, who like to see how their students went. Of particular interest to Fraser is his Year 10 extension class – the bright sparks who sat Level 1 maths a year ahead of their peers.

Fraser says 29 out of the 31 students got endorsements, which he’s very pleased with.

“I’m stoked, they’ve done really well. They’re a very good class.” Among them is his son Michael, who joined thousands of others across the Bay of Plenty and the country nervously checking how many Achieveds, Merits, Excellences – and even Not Achieveds – he received in last year’s external exams.

To his relief, there were none of the latter, although he’s a bit miffed at getting one Achieved in a chemistry

paper. Other than that though, the rest of his exams came back with Excellence – an amazing, and enviable, result for any student.

He took Level 1 science as well, and says none of the exams really stood out for him in difficulty.

“Honestly, they were all pretty standard – quite consistent,” says Michael.

There’s no doubt most of the students from Aquinas College will be smiling today with 92 per cent of Level 1 students, 99 per cent of Level 2 students, and 91 per cent of Level 3 students at the school passing their exams. On Tuesday Fraser collated the results and uploaded them to the school website, partly to ease traffic to the NZQA website, which was running fairly slow. As for Michael, he plans to sit several Level 2 exams this year, when he will technically be Year 11, so by the end of high school he will have covered all the Science and Maths subjects up to Level 3.

Cost of being in uniform On the brink of the new school year research has confirmed uniforms are still a financial curse for many parents.

And on the back of that research, the national clothing retailer Postie Plus has launched a range of cheaper generic uniforms to cater for stretched budgets – for example $3 for a polo shirt and shorts from $7.

But some parents are dubious and have raised questions of quality. “[Only] $3 for a polo?” queried one mum. “I wonder how long that shirt would last?”

Postie Plus research shows 88 per cent of 500 families surveyed in December are under financial stress from having to buy school uniforms. And 70 per cent say school uniforms are double what they think they’re worth.

The data shows the average outlay for a uniform is $265 with most parents ideally wanting to spend just $131. And because of that differential families are apparently making sacrifices on essentials like food, electricity, clothing and entertainment.

“The problem is school uniforms hit families after spends on Christmas and holidays,” says Tauranga Budget Advisory Service manager Diane Bruin. “The problem is not just about uniforms, it’s also about books and bus fares etc.”

Sixty-nine per cent of the 500 surveyed families wanted the option to purchase a generic uniform as a means of saving money. And even though just one in five schools, or 18

per cent of all schools, allow a generic alternative to school uniforms, this is the niche Postie Plus is trying to fill.

It’s launched what it calls a “quality, affordable and exclusive brand of school uniform basics”. The School+ brand offering cotton polo shirts for $3, shorts from $7 to $12, shirts and blouses at $7, skorts at $7 and culottes at $12. A generic jacket costs $10.

The company claims a child can be kitted for less than $50 – although it doesn’t take shoes into account. The clothing comes in multiple colours – the eight standard, most commonly colours used by schools.

One parent of three boys told The Weekend Sun she was constantly seeking economical options and this included school uniforms. She wondered how long a $3 polo shirt would last.

“I bought secondhand uniform items when my son started at college seven years ago. Apart from replacing a few buttons here and there, these items have worn very well. They were in such good condition they were passed down to his younger brothers.”

She says Tauranga Boys’ College sells good condition secondhand uniforms as well as new uniforms in the school shop. “And that’s great for parents on a tight budget.”

Diane says most clothing can be bought at a reasonable cost as long it’s not top of the range. “As most clothes are now made overseas at a much reduced cost, those savings need to be passed onto consumers. I would like the cost of school clothing looked at so it’s a fair cost for a fair product.”

The Tauranga Budget Advisory Service encourages parents to save for school expenses in advance. “You can get uniform card or pay a weekly amount to the school for the cost of uniforms and books etc.”

A special scholarship

A number of Bay tertiary students with significant disabilities will receive a special scholarship when the BayTrust’s Dillon Scholarships are awarded on February 3 at the Hotel Armitage from 10am.

The scholarship scholarships can be worth up to $5000 per year for up to four years.

And it recognises the particular efforts that people with significant disabilities have to make to obtain tertiary education and the extra financial cost that they may incur.

BayTrust’s Dillon Scholarship has awarded more than $1.5 million to more than 480 students since the scholarship began 25 years ago.

The Dillon Scholarship programme was established in 1990 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Bay of Plenty Savings Bank, the forerunner of Trust Bank Bay of Plenty.

Last year saw $93,300 awarded to 44 recipients.

Catching crayfish and tasting summer Summer is here and that means some amazing food.

Summer fruits, barbecues, salads, seafood and more will provoke the palate as it stays warm out.

Bay of Plenty celebrity chef Peter Blakeway says he’s excited about all of the options summer brings to the dinner table, but there’s one meal that trumps the rest.

“My favourite summer meal is definitely crayfish, and the family agrees.”

But Peter says it’s not just the flesh and spices of a crayfish that tantalise the taste buds.

“It’s actually going diving. It’s that idea of the family day, in the water, getting crayfish, and in the evening lighting a fire and cooking them over an open fire. It’s gorgeous.

“And at the end of the day that to me is what food is all about. Food is about the people that you love and care for; it’s about bringing joy and happiness and, quietly when no-one is watching, nutrition, to those that you care most about.”

more time outdoors at night, and Peter says cooking outside is the perfect way to get the family enjoying the long sunsets and each other’s company.

“Yeah, do it! Cook outdoors – why not? We cook a lot outdoors, winter and summer. Partly because I have a wood burning pizza oven outside – which I can thoroughly recommend, they’re a wonderful bit of kit, everyone should have one – and an old barbecue, and we made an old charcoal pit.”

And with plenty of quick and easy charcoal or fire pit tutorials online, cooking outside doesn’t have to cost much.

“I can pretty much cook anything and everything outside. It’s great,” says Peter. And it gets the cook out of the kitchen for a while; an added bonus for the family chef.

“The kitchen too often – especially domestically – means the cook of the house ends up locked in this little room in the corner and nobody talks to them.

“Bring yourself out of the kitchen and cook outside with everyone and suddenly you’re not just part of it, you’re the centre of it. And that’s really nice in the summer.

“So a family day out in the water followed by an open fire and crayfish, sat around the fire; there can be nothing finer in the summer.”

Sounds like a good summer’s day to us.

Serving up the ‘best brownie in the world’ I’ve recently realised that I haven’t shared the best brownie recipe in the world. This is one we used to do at the deli all the time and is just perfect. The sweet richness of the chocolate brownies is counterbalanced by the sharpness of the raspberries.

You’ll notice the recipe includes frozen raspberries instead of fresh, this is quite important because fresh raspberries would turn to liquid during cooking; whereas frozen hold their shape and don’t sink.

There’s no real trick when making brownie, it is really just a chocolate cake that doesn’t have enough

rising agent in it so collapses at the end of cooking to form that wonderful dense fudge-like consistency. You don’t need to worry about opening the oven as the collapse is the desired end result anyway, and you will know it is ready when it looks cooked but still has a little bit of movement in the middle when you shake the tray. Dust with a little bit of icing sugar and enjoy.

Chocolate and raspberry brownies Makes 1 medium tray Ingredients  200g plain flour  80g cocoa powder  300g unsalted butter, diced  300g dark chocolate, chopped  6 eggs  450g caster sugar  2 tsp vanilla essence

 150g flaked almonds  150g frozen raspberries Method Melt the chocolate and butter over a pan of gently boiling water and allow to cool slightly. In a clean bowl, whisk the sugar and eggs until thick and creamy. Mix in the vanilla and chocolate mix until smooth. Fold in the sifted flour and cocoa, then pour into a greased 20cm x 30cm tray. Sprinkle with the raspberries and nuts evenly on top. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 170 degrees Celsius for 25 minutes. When cool, cut into squares and serve dusted with icing sugar.

Scalping the backyard Western BOP fire permits cancelled I had a scorched earth policy towards the lawns.

I’d fire up the Briggs and Stratton on a Saturday morning, early enough to be fractious, and through clouds of dust and dirt, stones and clothes pegs I would transform healthy green into a moonscape.

I hated gardening but I loved the smell and feel of a loud, angry vibrating four stroke. I also loved the instant gratification. It was intoxicating. I couldn’t stop mowing.

I finished my berm and I would mow the neighbour’s berm and his neighbour’s berm.

The street was laid bare. Job done, job jobbed!

Then one hour, 11 minutes and 13 seconds later – because that was my record for denuding the lawns – I’d park under the loquat tree with a cold beer and smugly survey the damage.

But I sensed that was not how it should be. The women of the street would gaze incredulously at my assault on the grass. One even had the temerity to suggest I adjust the height of the blade. I suggested it couldn’t go any lower. And if it could go lower I would have done it. I suspect that’s not what she meant.

Where’s all this leading? Well with age comes a softening of attitude.

But rather than accept unwelcome random advice I researched caring for your lawn, loving your lawn.

And yes, rule one is mow at the right height. In summer adjust the mower to leave grass taller. And taller shades of grass, which reduces water

evaporation, leads to deeper roots and prevents weeds from germinating. But where’s the satisfaction?

Rule two – for the healthiest grass water your lawn deeply and infrequently.

That doesn’t take into account water restrictions, or hosing bans. Find out from your local council.

Treat for grubs – grubs lay eggs in grass in early to mid-summer and they hatch mid-to-late summer. Check with a garden centre about the best time to put down grub control.

Your dog piddling on the grass can kill it, and create ugly patches.

Hose the area down to dilute the urine in the soil.

Lawns are for walking on, lying on, playing on. Don’t park on them. And even walking on them in excessive heat can damage turf crowns.

Keep the mower blades sharp. Dull blades tears grass, causing ragged brown unsightly edges providing an opportunity for disease organisms. A rule of thumb is a blade is good for 10 hours of mowing.

Let clippings lie – if you are mowing at the right height you can let clippings lie. It’s called grass-cycling and saves time and money.

Fertilise – warm season turf grows strongly and needs fertiliser. Seek advice on nutrients and timing from your garden centre.

Keep lawns cleared – summer means stuff scattered around the section.

Pick things up to avoid damaging the grass or creating dangerous obstacles when mowing.

The annual Orange Festival. Tauranga resident and festival spectator Iris Stockwell (nee Woodcock) remembers it well.

“It was called the Orange Festival because back then, Tauranga more or less ended at 11th Ave. Beyond that – especially out around the Greerton area – it was mainly citrus orchards.”

Tauranga was known more for its citrus fruit before the days of kiwifruit, and in 13th Ave across the road from the Tauranga Boy’s College was the lemon factory, which Iris says was “quite a thriving business”.

The first Tauranga Orange Festival – later known as the Bay of Plenty Citrus Festival – was held in August of 1961 and was the brain child of businesswoman and councillor the late Ada Parnwell.

“It was thanks to her that this event was the success that it was,” says Iris.

“She put hours of work into organising it along with others, but she was ‘the leading light’.”

The festival was held during August when school holidays were on, the citrus trees were bearing fruit and the weather was settled – so a perfect time to celebrate.

In the early 1960s the annual festival – and the Highland Games – both drew crowds of thousands.

The parade originally started at the Wharepai Domain, proceeded down Cameron Rd, and ended in the Tauranga Racecourse in Greerton.

Later it was shortened by beginning at the Tauranga Boy’s College then proceeding on to the Tauranga Racecourse.

“The parade mainly saw businesses entering floats along with the Lions Club, Scout groups, and Tauranga Library entered their mobile bus that pulled the caravan known as ‘The Seuss Crowning the Queen. Orange Festival, Tauranga, 1961.

Bird gardens is the Bay’s best kept secret!

It’s often hard to find a good spot to take the family in the holidays. But I have the perfect place – and it’s a destination that just keeps on giving to people young and old.

My toddler loves entering Katikati Bird Gardens because it always has something different to offer.

If she’s not letting the ducks feed out of her hands, she’s running around the rose garden sniffling the flower’s perfumed scents or giggling as a resident goat nuzzles her feet.

And adults of all ages will find the gardens just as enticing – it’s a relaxing oasis located at the end of Walker Rd East, just south of Katikati, set on the edge of the inner Tauranga Harbour.

It’s early days on the fluoride process Bay of Plenty District Health Board’s confidential discussion on fluoride this week is a normal part of the Select Committee submission process, says board chair Sally Webb.

In April 2016 Health Minister Jonathan Coleman and Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne announced proposed legislative changes to allow District Health Boards, rather than local authorities, to decide on which community water supplies are fluoridated in their areas.

The Health (Fluoridation of Drinking Water) Amendment Bill is the new law which implements the political decision by changing the existing law on drinking water.

The amendment Bill passed its first reading in Parliament on December 6, 2016.

The changes take the decision making about fluoridation away from local bodies – city and district councils, and hands it over to DHBs, where governmentappointed board members are installed on every health board.

The agenda item about fluoride discussed this week concerns the BOPDHB’s own submissions on

the Bill, says Sally.

“The reason this is in the confidential agenda is our submissions to a Bill like that have to approved and discussed by the board, before they become public.

“So if we put it in the open agenda the public would have it before the board approved it. Then it will most likely, as most things are, be put on our website.”

After that the Select Committee considers all the submissions makes recommendations back to Parliament. Sally doesn’t think the DHBs will be doing anything until well into 2018.

“One of the things I think will come out of this is I’m pretty sure there will be some kind of responsibility for DHBs to take cognisance of what communities want,” says Sally.

The Bill gives DHBs the responsibility for making decisions about fluoridation of local

government water supplies, such that DHBs will decide which community water supplies are fluoridated in its area.

The Bill will state the powers and duties of DHBs in relation to making decisions about water fluoridation, the powers and duties of water suppliers (including local authorities) in relation to implementing DHB directives about water fluoridation, and information that DHBs must consider when determining whether to fluoridate a water supply.

Each DHB will be required to collect and review local data on community oral health, apply national tools developed by the Ministry of Health to generate information about water supplies and affected population groups and communities, and consider this information and direct water suppliers to fluoridate or not to fluoridate community water supplies as appropriate.

Avoid heating and congesting foods As you set your health and wellness intentions for 2017, take a minute to think about the impact your diet will have on your skin.

Most of the people who come to us seeking help to heal their rosacea, acne or dry skin conditions have never been educated about the impact food can have on the appearance of their skin. Losing control of our environment?

The announcement by Bay of Plenty Regional Council that blue-green algae monitoring has begun for the season makes dismal reading.

This is council speak for “we have lost control of our environment” but hey I am still being paid.

Wherever blue green algae occurs in the Bay of Plenty, there you will find black swans.

Black swans and Canada geese are the biggest direct polluters of inland waterways and in lakes in the BOP. Black swans have the highest faecal output of any water fowl so far measured, a massive 418 grams per day or 152.570grams per season roughly a trailer full per annum per bird. Each swan has a daily output of 11 million faecal coliforms, 8.6 million e.coli and 270,000 enterocci. Do the maths.

Tauranga Harbour will host up to 6000 of these introduced birds this season, possibly more.

They will congregate on the most fragile and popular recreational areas of the harbour from Plummers Point to Waihi including

the much-loved Omokoroa Beach and Tuapiro.

There will also be the seasonal influx of Canada geese.

These birds elevate toxic risk even higher as they can carry salmonella and aeromonas microbe species potentially pathogenic to humans.

This is all good news because our council can simply drive around plonking toxic water signs everywhere - except in view of cruise ship passengers- so job done, problem solved. Now for the bad news.

Tauranga Harbour is slowly but surely dying but our council seems to believe increasing staff and assuring the public that all is well by monitoring the steady decline is the way forward.

The ecological balance of Tauranga Harbour has long gone with the mass destruction of seagrass meadows, along with many of our native aquatic species which rely on seagrass to survive largely due to the overwhelming numbers of black swan and Canada geese.

Our council appears unwilling or unable to ruffle the feathers of Fish and Game by demanding a huge reduction of these introduced pests.

Black swan and Canada geese are clearly the biggest direct polluters and destroyers of our beloved harbour.

The question must surely be, how long are we going to condone this controlled destruction, managed neglect and denial by the authorities charged with the responsibility for the welfare of Tauranga Harbour? K Molloy, Omokoroa.

BOPRC Tauranga Harbour catchments manager Sarah Omundsen replies: Environmental monitoring by Bay of Plenty Regional Council is a key tool for detecting environmental problems and informing solutions.

It’s also a task that the Resource Management Act requires of Council.

There are many examples around the Tauranga Harbour where environmental monitoring has led to positive management actions. These actions include Regional Council funded work to reduce pollution by reticulating sewerage at Te Puna West, and the fencing and planting of more than 216 kilometres of waterway margins around the harbour since 2012. More examples are available in our 2016 Catchment Action Plan progress report at www.boprc.govt.nz/taurangaharbour.

While Tauranga Harbour research has shown black swans to be a factor

in sea grass loss, their bacterial contribution and overall impact on harbour health is considered low in comparison to other pollution sources.

Regional Council’s work is currently focused on reducing the greatest contributors to sea grass loss and water quality degradation, which are sediment and nutrient run-off from land-use.

The results of monitoring and research funded by Regional Council is made available to the public and mandated agencies such as Fish and Game and Toi Te Ora, to help them make informed decisions about issues they are responsible for such as swan management and public health.

Average Kiwis can’t afford hybrids cent dearer than comparative petrol vehicles represents fiscal madness and an indulgence that Mr and Mrs Average Kiwi cannot afford - even as ‘his and her’ vehicles even at the cheaper end.

Living in the rarefied air of politics has seemingly affected Mr Bridges’ judgement and he confuses hybrid vehicles with fully electric cars like Telsa that are even dearer.

Frankly, as Minister of Transport, he really has no business touting any type of vehicle particularly those that don’t stack up and are not financially viable.

Oh and while on the topic

It is alright for some I guess. So Tauranga MP Simon Bridges MP thinks purchasing a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which is RRP $59,000 when the base petrol model is $40,000 and an Audi A3 E-tron RRP $75,000 when the base petrol model is $50,000, is the bee’s knees and helping to save the planet.

Well for starters both these vehicles are hybrids and not fully electric with limited ranges and neither would be flavour of the month with most motorists.

Undoubtedly, most people support the concept of fully electric cars - not hybrids - provided these vehicles are reasonably priced and are readily serviceable.

Re: Simon Fenlon’s experience at the Te Puke ANZ Bank (The Weekend Sun, January 13), I can understand his defiance and refusal to remove his ‘cap’. I’d probably have done the same thing and walked out. It’s a cap for crying out loud. But hey! He could have been concealing a hand gun or knife under his jacket as well. Did the teller consider that possibility?

Would bank staff tell a person wearing a burka, niqab, chador or full head/body covering costume like that worn by a nun to remove their threatening head covering? I think not. That would be culturally and religiously insensitive and racist. But what’s the difference? Who knows what’s under those costumes. Are we all suspicious characters?

Do we all look like potential robbers? No wonder people are using online services these days.

If banks are so paranoid perhaps they should have better security other than an unarmed older or very unfit specimen standing at the entrance or metal detectors that detect things like guns etc as people enter the bank. It’s done at airports.

I came to this country from England in 1973, and throughout the last 43 years I’ve never understood why the focus of our National Day is almost exclusively on Maori.

For a few years the name was changed to New Zealand Day, far more appropriate because nonMaori are part of the country’s history too, and should be celebrated in their cultural manner as well.

The offensive shenanigans that occur most years at Waitangi demean the Crown and its ministers, and turn the celebrations into an embarrassing farce.

Overseas visitors and new immigrants must surely shake their heads in dismay at the carry-on and lack of dignity. Perhaps a referendum could be held on returning February 6 to New Zealand Day so we can all feel that it’s our day too, and not just a Maori one.

There’s music for every occasion Everything seems to be running a little behind at the moment, and this column is no exception.

Due to the unpredictable vicissitudes of life I missed my annual round-up of weird Christmas presents. There, I told you I was running behind: I’m still thinking about Christmas.

But, despite years of reporting on the strange cosmetic products my special lady friend receives as gifts, this year I find myself at a loss.

After last year’s snail mucous (no, I still don’t know what it does!) I was expecting a bonanza for Christmas 2016 but the oddest thing to arrive was a face mask made of potato.

Which is a bit of an anti-climax, though I was chuffed to read the description: “Potato mask pack that is containing potato extract moisturize skin damaged by UV rays immediately”.

I’ll put it next to the bag of peanuts with the helpful descriptor: “May contain peanuts”.

But, while skincare products failed to live up to pressie expectations, one other present reminded

So back to the CD. Hugh Cornwall, for those otherwise occupied during the late-1970s, was guitarist for The Stranglers – ‘No More Heroes’, ‘Peaches’; those Stranglers.

Now I’m a big fan of both these guys, or at least I used to be. Can’t say they’ve been on my radar for decades. An album together promised to be good. Maybe. Let’s look more closely...

The CD is called ‘This Time It’s Personal’. John sings, Hugh plays guitar (there’s a band). They do old favourites. ‘It’s Only Make Believe’, ‘MacArthur Park’, ‘Love Potion No. 9’, and more. The arrangements are lacklustre; JCC is not what you’d call a natural singer. The whole thing sounds like nothing more than your embarrassing drunken uncle leading a karaoke sing-a-long.

I listened to it once. It’s awful, simply awful. Then I remembered another trait of the English. If some outsider rebel manages to survive being trashed by the gutter press for long enough they become a loveable old rogue – much like Bill Nighy’s ageing rock ‘n’ roller in ‘Love Actually’ – and they can do any dodgy old bollocks they like.

So, time for The Lesson. A few days later was New Year’s Eve. Midnight hit; fireworks sparked; everyone formed a circle and sung ‘Auld Lang Syne’. It fell to me to put some loud music on the stereo. Hmmmm...

Diverse bunch, different ages, different tastes, it needed something universal; something perhaps where enthusiasm overrides excellence.

Yep, you’ve guessed it. John Cooper Clarke and Hugh Cornwall saw in the New Year for us and everyone sang along, just like a drunken karaoke.

And had a brilliant time. Sometimes it’s not about quality. There’s music for every occasion and sometimes that music is rubbish. watusi@thesun.co.nz

First for Tauranga airshow Visitors to Classics of the Sky – Strikemasters at Sundown on Saturday will see the first local display of a new aircraft to the airshow circuit.

The Royal New Zealand Air Force plans to display one of the new T6C-Texan ll trainer aircraft for the first time in Tauranga at the Classics of the Sky – Strikemasters at Sundown on January 21.

Replacing the CT4-E aircraft as pilot trainers, and also as the RNZAF display team, the new Texan display team is developing an air show display routine for the upcoming air show season.

The NZ Defence Force also plans to display a C-130 Hercules, an SH-2G Seasprite helicopter, a Pinzgauer light operational vehicle and the military police dogs.

NZDF recruiters will also attend the airshow.

An iconic amphibious aircraft is expected back in Tauranga for the first time at an airshow for many years. The Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina will be a

welcome sight in the Tauranga skies this week and at the show.

Plans for high speed vehicle races down the airport runway are well underway. One of the superbikes on the display list is the 2014 Suzuki Hayabusa, which broke the land speed record for the Ashburton Speed trials in December, with a top speed of 308.7km/hr.

Other vehicle races planned include a group of high performance dragsters, and the Nissan GT-R 35 from Farmer Autovillage racing against the Yakovlev-Yak 55. Aircraft on display also include classic, sport, aerobatic and RC model aircraft too.

The public can purchase a ride in a BAC Strikemaster Jet or the P51 Mustang. Gates open to the public from 1pm. ‘Live’ displays start at 4pm.

There is plenty of parking on the field, as well as lots of food and beverage sites. BYO alcohol is not permitted.

A private carpark opposite Books A Plenty is being decorated today as part of a city chalk art event from 3pm-5pm.

Colouring Book City’s Chalk Art Event on Grey St will be free to participants, who will be asked to take inspiration in their chalk masterpieces from helping or rescuing a person or animal.

“Come ready to draw those memories and hear our feature book, ‘Hemi and the Whale’ by Ron Bacon, which will inspire our artwork for this event,” says the event invitation.

Prior to the event, being run in conjunction with Downtown Tauranga, a chalk outline will be painted on the pavement outside the bookshop.

From 3pm on January 20 the public is invited to finish the artwork and colour it in with chalk.

There will be spot prizes and a grand prize for the longest colourer.

The Mockers hit the road again after 30 years “It’s great having everyone in the same room again and quite strange, it’s almost like a time capsule,” says The Mockers frontman Andrew Fagan with a laugh. “Except when you look around at each other, you can see time has travelled.”

For much of the 1980s The Mockers were one of New Zealand’s most successful bands, enjoying three top 10 albums, several hit singles including ‘Forever Tuesday Morning’, ‘Swear It’s True’, ‘One Black Friday’ and more, plus played to huge crowds up and down the country.

And next week, on January 25, the legendary Kiwi band is heading to Mount Maunganui to play at the Totara Street performance venue as part of a nineshow tour of NZ – their first tour in 30 years.

It will be The Mockers’ classic line-up of NZ-based Andrew on vocals and guitarist Brett Adams, plus bassist Geoff Hayden and keyboardist Tim Wedde who’ve travelled from London and Sydney respectively and have come home specifically for this tour.

The reunion will also serve as tribute to Mockers drummer and friend Steve Thorpe, who passed away

in 1986, with special guest drummer and long-time Mockers fan, Chris O’Connor from the Phoenix Foundation joining the band on tour.

“During rehearsals there was a mixture of anticipation, apprehension and also familiarity. I don’t know if we’re playing the songs better than we used to or just forgotten how well the guys did play.

“They’re really good musicians and perhaps, I think, they’ve gotten better as the years have gone by.

“This reunion tour is a great chance for the band to reconnect from all corners of the globe after so long apart, and share the Mockers’ songs with the very supportive fan base throughout New Zealand.”

Sensing God in the summer Christmas and New Year are now behind us, and we are probably no longer thinking of star-struck shepherds, angel voices and journeying astrologers. Gone too is our focus on a new baby, born to ordinary parents in an obscure town many centuries ago.

Maybe we packed away the Christ-child with the Christmas decorations?

Instead we are now enjoying as much summer as we can, welcoming cool breezes on hot days, grateful for occasional showers and making the most of the sunshine. Despite the strong winds that seem to be part of this year’s season, on a warm day

we find ourselves throwing open our doors and embracing the flow to outside. When the ground becomes dry and the plants begin to wilt, a rain shower seems a gift and we savour the scent of the settling dust and the coolness of raindrops. At the height of the year, the sun reaches its furthest point, shining into rooms and crevices that usually stay in shadow, shedding light in neglected corners.

Mark Wilson uses these images to suggest God continues to come to us.

Guiding you through the storms of life Some 20 years ago, like many other New Zealanders, I attended the Pensacola Revival in Florida in the United States.

The meetings commenced at 7pm, but such was the desire of thousands of folks to get into the meetings that many started lining up from 6am – yes 6am.

Florida in the summertime is very hot and humid.

One day in the heat of the midday sun a man drove into the adjacent parking lot in a Chevy truck. The back of it was full of Coke and 7Up etc packed in lots and lots of lovely ice. He called the hundreds to help themselves for free.

The story behind this love gift was this man and his brother, who had a business nearby, had only two weeks earlier given their hearts to The Lord.

Their gratitude was displayed in this practical way on what was for me a very special day. A day that changed my life.

The love displayed by Jesus Christ not only changed lives 2000 years ago as Jesus fed them and healed those who followed Him, but that same love is displayed in and through His followers today.

If you are in the middle of a storm in your life I recommend you do as I did many years ago. Head off to a local Christian church of your choosing, seek Jesus. He will guide you through the storms of life.
