Matahui School’s Mud Run is returning for 2016 on November 12, with people of all ages invited to relive their childhoods and get back in the dirt in a fun-filled, mud-filled event.

The 2.5km course based at Matahui School and passes through two

adjoining properties involves a number of man-made and natural obstacles along with a 50m waterslide and a large section of thick black mud.

This year’s event will have a competitive event for men, women, high school, intermediate and primary children in Years 4-6 to take muddy honours of the course.

Supermoons, pests and tasers A supermoon is something Dotcom would do at the back window of a bus.

Fortunately it turns out, we’re not having that sort of mooning. It’s the planetary sort.

The supermoon on Tuesday will be closer to the earth than it’s been for decades, and won’t happen again for more decades.

So all the loonies out there will be out in full force. Batten down the hatches, because it also coincides with the USA under new leadership…

It’s worrying to consider the most powerful nation on earth is ruled by a lunatic in the same week that the moon is concentrating its strongest influence on our planet for many decades.

A story on SunLive this week warned that some folk may try to peddle misfortune on the eve of a supermoon: An astrologer warns any fame will come with a certain amount of notoriety, and that the period is good for those who can make a career out of doom and gloom.

There are also warnings about the pain that comes with such a sensitive moon seeing many tempted to self-medicate with drink and or drugs, that depression can be a problem, as could a tendency to selfdestruction – that some might feel their lives are fated even cursed for the next two weeks.

Probably how Mrs Clinton is feeling about now.

Life gets better as the moon wanes, apparently.

Important changes ahead

This week let’s change the world. The ludicrous situation with birthdays must change. We’ve had a meeting about this and it’s unanimous.

A good mate Steve and I have both decided it’s crazy for people having a birthday to shout everyone. It should be the other way around.

This is all Steve’s idea, but I’m going right along with it. He has a lot of good ideas and would be an ideal candidate to run the world, or at least a large collection of States, should they ever run short of likely candidates. (Which it seems they often do.)

Apart from the fact Steve is busy running his marine supplies shop, he’d be excellent

at running the world, and especially good at organising birthday shout protocol on a worldwide basis.

He points out that New Zealand is the only country that does the ‘birthday shout’ thing backwards.

I’m taking his word on this. I’ve only ever been in NZ during birthdays, so have no special experience of a birthday offshore.

The closest I came was that time when flying across the Pacific on my birthday and crossed the International Date, meaning it was no longer my birthday. But after a short stopover, the plane went back across the dateline so I started birthday celebrations all over again. Two birthdays in one day.

Some of you readers with more worldly travel experiences may be able to enlighten us further on what birthday activities happen in other countries.

In the meantime, we urge any of you having a birthday after today, to fight back against this injustice.

Demand that everyone around you shout.

Demand cake.

Beverages. Dinner out. And make them pay.

It’s your birthday, not theirs.

Let’s change the world, one birthday at a time. Sort out one of New Zealand’s most peculiar and irrational cultural oddities.

If you have any questions, best ask Steve. And wish him a belated happy birthday for last week. It’s not too late to take him cake.

A good tasering

I don’t know where the Gisborne Police’s missing taser has gone, but I do have a short list of people I’d like to see writhing and twitching on the ground.

Such as, the guy who invented the Rubik’s Cube. He’s a menace. I’d like to see Erno

paralysed and squirming helplessly, just like the victims of his cruel hoax.

And whoever brought gorse to New Zealand. Probably one of my illustrious Scottish ancestors. You’d have thought they’d be happy with Heather. She’s lovely.

But no, someone had to bring along that prick as well.

Too late now, they’re well gone off to the great Biosecurity Containment Facility in the sky. But if they were here today, they’d be on the list of people needing a good tasering.

Quade Cooper. For no other reason than we collectively as a nation make a sport of irritating him.

Then there’s Gareth Morgan, because it’s fashionable to pick on rich people. And because he shot into the SunLive page impressions Top Ten this week when our Social Butterfly Correspondent Rosalie Crawford aired a quirky video of Gareth, explaining that he doesn’t actually hate cats, and owns two. That story and video was viewed several hundred thousand times.

Which proves that Gareth stories and cat videos are winners online. Put the two together, and you’ve got mega page impressions. All we need now is to weave Phil Rudd from AC/DC, a dash of Kardashian, and the most searched web word, “porno”… and we’ll break the internet.

There’s a few others on the To-BeTasered List, but we’d rather not divulge them all. We’d like it to be a surprise.

So if you happen to be that person who has come into possession of the police’s “misplaced” weapon for debilitating offenders, drop me a line and we’ll see if we can work something out here.

Prepping for the improbable

Prophet of doom, scaremongerer? Neither, says Gary Benner, who is developer of the tsunami alert system called Tsunado. “During normal times it’s just a radio,” says Gary. “But in the event of a disaster situation like a tsunami, it will let you know in no uncertain terms.”

Gary says he’s a realist with a genuine desire to save lives. The Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Management Group has the same genuine desire. But the group and Gary are at odds over how best that can be done.

The Ministry of Civil defence and Emergency Management is exploring a national public alerting system using mobile phone technology.

“We support a national system in addition to our current local and regional text alert and email update system,” says Emergency Management Bay of Plenty director Clinton Norde.

“Therefore, at this stage we are not pursuing the Tsunado alert system.”

Gary says cellphones can’t be relied on to be alerting devices. But his Tsunado can be relied on.

“And I would be extremely disappointed with my life if I woke up one morning to find my family in Papamoa had been washed away by a tsunami of the Aceh scale because we weren’t prepared.”

He refers to the 2004 tsunami that killed 230,000 people and injured half a million when 30 metre waves swept ashore through Asia. And Gary says what

happened at 4.37am, Friday, September 2 this year here in the Bay of Plenty should be warning enough.

“In my view that was a near miss.”

A quake – 7.1 on the Richter scale, north-east of Te Araroa – rattled a sleeping Bay of Plenty. It was the worst quake to hit the North Island for 20 years, but we slept on through. A 30cm tsunami warning fizzled, but Gary says we should learn from that.

“If the volatile Kermadec Trench, the wave generator, had triggered a slightly different earthquake it could have thrown up a tsunami of Aceh proportions,” says Gary. Travelling at 600 km/h, it could dump on Papamoa and Mount Maunganui within 50 minutes.

“What would we do, how would we react if that happened in the dead of night?”

A report commissioned for the Bay of Plenty Regional Council suggested the worst-case scenario could kill up to 900 people and cause $54 million worth of damage.

The 2004 event caused Gary and his colleagues to spend 12 years and hundreds of thousands of dollars researching the technologies, trialling prototypes and pursuing funding. Their answer was the Tsunado Alert Radio, which uses broadcast radio.

“The most rugged and reliable method of communication proven over decades,” says Gary.

Tavern robbed at gunpoint Police are investigating an armed robbery where two men forced their way into a Tauranga tavern just after closing. Just after 1am on Monday, two men forced their way into Cheers Tavern at Owens Place, Bayfair.

One of the men was armed with a firearm, and made off with a sum of cash from the bar, say police. Mirko following his football dream A 12-year-old Tauranga schoolboy has the opportunity to follow his football dream with an invitation to train with top professional English club Fulham. Mirko Brinkmann earned the chance to spend three weeks with the London club when he impressed coaches at recent national training camps held by the Ricki Herbert Football Academy. Mirko was one of about 120 talented youngsters invited to attend two RHFA national camps in Taupo in September and October. They were attended by Fulham academy coach Dave Wright, who spent six days working with the players.

Wanted: Red-vented bulbul The Ministry for Primary Industries has placed a $1000 bounty on the head of the aggressive pest bird the red-vented bulbul. The MPI is working with the Department of Conservation and local authorities to eradicate the introduced pest and is calling on Bay of Plenty local to report any sightings of red-vented bulbuls.

A single red-vented bulbul bird was found and removed near Te Puke earlier in the year, while the MPI has also received an as-yet unverified report of a single bird being spotted near Katikati.

Supermaxi unveiled in Tauranga Modifications turning a conventional 90ft yacht to a 100ft supermaxi have been unveiled in Tauranga. Finnish sailor Ludde Ingvall’s ‘CQS’ emerged from the Southern Ocean sheds on Sunday. The work has been undertaken with backing from British-Australian businessman Sir Michael Hintze. The yacht has now been re-modelled and re-named CQS after its principal sponsor. Working with a top technical team they have produced a boat that pushes the boundaries of design technology.

The yacht’s first competitive outing is expected to be the Round White Island Race starting from Auckland on November 25.

One haunting verse from a poem in ‘The Vietnam Scrapbook’ – the re-written, expanded and embellished version, more than 400 pages of anecdotes, chilling insights, dark remembrances, stark images, documents and statistics commemorating New Zealand’s involvement in perhaps our most controversial theatre of war.

And the emotional scars, the posttraumatic stress disorder.

“Was that the click of a rifle?

“He can’t tell any more, the sound of domesticity, or a flashback of the war?”

Co-author Mike Subritzky, a career soldier who never made it to Vietnam, says that’s what he understands of the conflict. “I have seen the aftermath, the broken bodies, the flashbacks and the crying, a lot of drunkenness and damaged families.”

All wars are hellish, but Mike says Agent Orange, the extremely toxic dioxin defoliant, put Vietnam on another plane, even more hellish.

The United States dumped 19 million gallons on forests, soldiers and civilians.

“Successive governments didn’t want to know about Agent Orange but it was later blamed for serious health issues including birth defects, rashes, psychological symptoms and cancer,” says Mike, who authored ‘The Vietnam Scrapbook’ with his good mate Mike Smith from Matamata.

They were at an Anzac celebration in Picton when the idea of ‘The Vietnam Scrapbook’ was born.

“And all the guys who took part in the battle of Fire Support Base Coral said they would all be dead soon and they were concerned everything that happened there would either be forgotten or lost.”

The fire support base was established by New Zealanders and Australians north of Bien Hoa to

intercept the North Vietnamese and Vietcong approaching or departing Saigon.

There were frenzied assaults on the base during several days.

“Probably the biggest battle and fiercest fighting our boys were engaged in,” says Mike.

The Vietnam vets knew Subritzky had already written a book. “They said: ‘Hey Subs, you know what you are doing, we

will give you all the s*** and you can do it’. I said: ‘I was never in Vietnam, never got closer than the Three Kings’. But they insisted: ‘You will get it done’.”

“With all these very sick men. I felt a huge responsibility. Most of them are dead now.”

Mike Subritzky, the Katikati author, got to work and he got it done.“Dear Mum…”It’s a letter home from a soldier called Wayne.

In ‘The Vietnam Scrapbook’ the young soldier matter-of-factly recounts the death of two mates.

“I called in the doc with his intravenous fluids and surgical gear but we couldn’t save the more seriously wounded lad. He had at least 20 to 30 holes in his body and was due to go home in a few days. Then in the very next line the soldier thanks his Mum for a gift of tea and sugar.

It’s a book about soldiers and war ostensibly for soldiers. But it’s also an unsanitised and unadulterated examination of man’s inhumanity to man.

Yes – Matahui School’s Mud Run is returning for 2016. And this year’s event on tomorrow, November 12, will have a competitive event for men, women, high school, intermediate and primary children in Years 4-6 to take muddy honours of the course.

Organiser Matt Griffiths says the school’s inaugural social mud run last year drew 147 participants.

The 2.5km course based at Matahui School and passes through two adjoining properties involves a number of man-made and natural obstacles along with a 50m waterslide and a large section of thick black mud.

“We’re just looking to grow the event this year – so we’ve developed a competitive section, which will be run at the start of the event.”

Plus, there’s also a teams’ section, which will see groups of four work together to achieve the fastest time through the course.

“We look forward to our local businesses getting together to challenge each other for the title of fastest or muddiest team,” says Matt.

Once the competitive runners have set off at 11am there will be a social mud run at 12 noon.

“This will not be timed but measured in how muddy people get and how much fun they have,” says Matt.

And there will be loads of spot prizes and prizes for the best costume, muddiest, oldest and youngest

participants. And a special event for preschool-aged children will include an obstacle course, slippery slide “and a few special surprises along the way”.

Matt says the mud run is a great chance for families to do something a little different and have some great fun outside.

“And it doesn’t matter if it is raining on the day as you will get wet and muddy regardless.”

A range of food and refreshments will be available and a prizegiving will follow the closure of the course at 2pm.

“The mud run is based at our school and we use the two adjacent properties – we’re really lucky we have great neighbours who love the fact we do things outside and in the mud,” says Matt.

“Matahui is a small country school, an independent school – part of us running the mud run is to show people we are just the same as other schools but have a strong focus on the outdoors and learning outside the classroom.

“We are everyday people who like doing stuff outdoors with our students – and part of that involves learning as well.’

Matt says the long term vison is for this event to grow “and there are future plans for riparian planting along the course”.

Registrations for the competitive leg is 10.30am for an 11am start, non-competitive participants need to sign up at 11.30am for a 12 noon start. The event costs $10 per adult, $5 per child under-15, $2 for preschoolers and $40 per team. Restoration complete!

They’ve spend more than 30,000 hours fixing it up – now the many dedicated Classic Flyers volunteer men who restored the Grumman Avenger will celebrate completion of the restoration on Friday.

Today, Classic Flyers Aviation Museum is formally thanking the volunteers and dedicated engineering crew that worked on the World War II aircraft during the last two years to get the aircraft to this state.

The men have transformed the Grumman Avenger from a pile of scrap that had been carted halfway round the world and magically transformed it back into an

aeroplane, a World War II torpedo, a piece of living history, a not-sostatic “static display” at the Classic Flyers Aviation Museum.

“The engineering team is just one aspect of the many roles the volunteers perform at the museum,” says Garry Bentley of Classic Flyers. “Without volunteers Classic Flyers could not operate and it is our visitor’s interactions with our volunteers that really makes the museum come alive with their aviation anecdotes and knowledge.

“Of particular mention would be

The aircraft has been restored to static museum display condition so it will never fly, says Garry.

“But we can however start the engine and open and close the folding wing mechanism [required to fit the aircraft on to crowded aircraft carrier decks during the war].” From time to time, the aircraft will be taken outside and the engine will be started up “to keep the moving parts from seizing up like we do with a number of other aircraft in our care,” says Garry. The Grumman will be on display at Classic Flyers’ next Airshow ‘Strikemasters at Sundown’ on January 21, 2017.

Bay residents can be part of a free worldwide event this Sunday at Mount Drury and show kindness is the common thread that unites us all – regardless of the differences in race, religion, ethnicity, culture or background.

Tauranga is the only New Zealand location taking part in Dance for Kindness 2016 – which sees a combination freeze/flash mob take place on the same day to the same song and dance around the world.

Donna Cain, who is group leader for the NZ event and owner of Mount Dance Co, says this is the fifth year Dance for Kindness has run but only the second time here in God’s Own. “Teaarani Dyer, who lives in Tauranga, started it last year here in NZ and just loved it. It’s something close to my heart, which is why I have stepped up as the leader of the event this time,” says Donna.

“For me, it’s quite a personal thing. Dance has helped me through some of my toughest moments in life. I love sharing the enjoyment of movement and helping people gain confidence in themselves.

“So for me it’s about getting people moving and understanding that even though you might not be good at it, it still helps you release those feel-good

endorphins. I have always played a part in working within the disability sector but this year I’m so happy to be able to invite StarJam along to take part too.

“And by doing something that shows a bit of kindness goes a long way.”

Donna, who is an ambassador with Life Vest Inside, the non-profit organisation Dance for Kindness works under, says the event starts off with a three-minute freeze mob at 2pm, where people will freeze in a kindness pose. “It might be helping someone up, a pat on the back, a hug – or you might choose to start connected in a group.”

“After that the ‘Dance of Kindness’ song kicks in –‘Keys to the World’.

“So when people register online they send you an email with all the information of the event you signed up for and also the choreography for the song.

“So every participant around the world will be doing the same dance, which is pretty phenomenal. Just to get people around the world to do a dance on the same day is pretty phenomenal – but getting them to do the same dance is another level up.”

This year marks a significant cultural achievement in Tauranga’s theatrical history. It is 80 years since 16th Ave Theatre launched, and the rest, as they say, is history.

“Tauranga was first settled by people who came out from England, who were quite cultured, lawyers, doctors and business people who were used to play groups and theatre productions,” says director Lankshear. and past president Julie Lankshear.

“New Zealand was settled in a different way from Australia.

“In the very early start of forming our colony, people came out here for a life.”

Some of the traditions brought from England to Tauranga Tauranga included included mummings – skits and acts – at Christmas and on other special occasions. Common in Oxfordshire, this quaint custom included “mummers” who were were convivial convivial people wearing masks, some blacking their faces and others dressing “fantastically” going about singing ditties such as “A merry Christmas and a happy New Year, Your pockets full of money and your cellars full of beer”.

Mumming spread from the British Isles to the British colonies, with mummer’s plays referring particularly to a play where a number of characters are called on-stage; two engage in a combat, the ‘The Fantasticks’ with Bob Addison, Zoe loser being revived by a doctor character.

It’s also a system which prepares students to be confi dent, responsible, refl ective, innovative and engaged,” he continued.

ACG Tauranga will off er a strong selection of IGCSE subject options for its Year 11 students next year, and that list will only grow, according to Mr Hutchinson. “We have top-quality teachers off ering all the sciences, PE, online Computer Science and a language option,” said Principal Shawn Hutchinson. “These will provide a broad pathway for our students to progress onto university after Year 13, whatever their aspirations.”

As the school enters into its fi rst year with a Year 11 programme, Mr Hutchinson said prospective students would reap many benefi ts. “We are still a new school and our class sizes are small. Our students receive incredibly personalised education from teachers who are specialists in their subjects. Students joining now will gain the many advantages that come with having one-on-one attention from quality teachers.”

Mummers to Troupers Troupers Wellington Library, this early group laid claim to being the first in the country to have performed a full-length NZ play, written in 1866, two years after the Battle of Gate Pa. The author was a member of the British Forces who had stayed on here.

Still operating under the name of The Mummers, the theatre group held its inaugural meeting in September 1936, in the lounge of its secretary, performing two or three shows a year in the town’s civic venues.

In 1948 the constitution was altered and the name formally changed to Tauranga Repertory Society Incorporated.

On December 18, 1954, Tauranga Mayor L.R. Wilkinson laid the foundation stone for the Tauranga Repertory Theatre.

Eighty years on, members of the society, or 16th Ave Theatre as it is commonly known, are very proud they’re part of the longest continuously running amateur theatre in NZ. They do state as an aside that Wellington’s amateur theatre formed earlier, but went into recess for a few years.

In the mid-1970s the theatre was in a derelict state of repair.

It was given two closure notices, one from the fire department and one from the health department.

through the floor, it was ‘stone cold’ and audiences numbered about a dozen people.

When Julie Lankshear took over as president, there was $100 in the bank.

She recounts how the arts council in Tauranga came up with the idea it would give $7000 to 16th Ave Theatre on condition a professional company, called The Company, which wanted to start up in Tauranga, could hire the theatre.

The Company would do three shows per year, paying $400 per week while performing the shows, and pay their own power.

It was a Hobson’s Choice for 16th Ave Theatre, Julie and

the committee had to sign the agreement, or close the doors.

They had no choice. Some committee members resigned over it, concerned the professional theatre group would take over.

The Company started off with a performance of ‘Glide Time’ which played to packed houses.

“The theatre would have closed but for Julie,” says Zoe Kennedy, another director and past president.

“The retiring president actually put up a motion the theatre close.

“It had just got so difficult to keep it open.

“And Julie said: ‘No’. Some of us stood with Julie.

It’s Quarryfest time!

Greenfingers, garden-lovers, entertainment-goers, families and friends are all invited along to this year’s Quarryfest on Sunday, November 13.

The festival – from 10am to 4pm – is set to be an absolute must-do for Western Bay of Plenty residents as organisers scurry to organise a huge line-up of entertainment, stalls and ensure the gardens are looking their finest.

And with the Bethlehem-Te Puna Lions now organisers of the park’s main annual fundraiser, Ian Calvert says they’ve working hard to offer a Quarryfest of epic proportions.

“It’s all about entertainment, stalls – with a major range of products – and enjoying the gardens in spring,” says Ian. “This is our second year organising this event – last time it was extremely popular.”

quarry will a hub of activity and music for all ages.

Musical entertainment features throughout the day on the green and in the amphitheatre, including The Wai Taiko Drummers (Japanese drumming), Bay of Plenty Pipes and Drums with Tina Peat’s Celtic Dancers, the Kaimai Express bluegrass band, Acoustic Music Club and Tauranga Brass Band, the Cordelia Quintet and Barbershop group, Tuakau School’s marimba band, Peter Clever and singers, and Jim Wood is the MC. And for the kids – the Te Puna Scouts group is offering abseiling at the gardens.

There’s food and drink stalls on-site and produce for sale – so is a great way to get out and about in the pre-summer sun.

“I think people come along for combination of the entertainment, stalls and also to have a look at the gardens,” says Ian. “There’s a huge amount of craft

people with their items on display, there’s food on offer all day – and don’t forget the garage sale,” says Ian. “The Quarry girls have a plant sale as well with all sorts of plants – a huge collection – and a lot of them they’ve propagated themselves in a little nursery on-site.

As result the Lions are spreading the word about the Quarryfest, encouraging people to get along on the day.

“We’ve got a bus that carts people from the bottom carpark up to the top – and this year we have a few golf carts ferrying people with disabilities up to the action.”

“Now we just need some good weather.”

Melissa’s passion Melissa’s passion Seeing babies feel sand between their toes for the first time, and watching toddlers enjoy the novel texture of paint between their fingers is something Melissa Palmer revels in.

“Every day is different – depending on the children, what their interests are, you’re not doing the same thing every single day,” says the Early Childhood Education teacher of 14 years.

“And every day is a challenge in a special unique way – it’s really awesome.”

And for Melissa, this week is special and unique. She’s been recognised for her oozing passion and dedication to her career by being named runner-up in the

early childhood category in the New Zealand’s Most Inspiring Teachers campaign.

Melissa, who has been working at ABC Central Tauranga for 13 years next March, has wanted to an ECE teacher “since I was little”.

Her parents’ friends had younger children, so interacting with them uncovered a yearning.

She first completed a certificate in early childhood education, then a national certificate, a diploma and a degree – a Bachelor of Teaching.

Does she freak out at the responsibility of looking after other’s children?

“It is a huge responsibility – you’re a looking after people’s treasures every single day.

“But it’s actually a privilege that they trust me with their most prized possession.

“I just absolutely love what I do.”

And you can tell.

“Each child is their own person, has their own interests that we like to extend and enrich their lives,” says Melissa. She works with under twos at ABC Tauranga central as one of nine staff, including an admin person and cook, looking after the centre’s 45 families. She’s also worked with over-twos.

“The under twos – they’re development is just at such a high rate. They are learning things constantly. And everything to them is new.

“Some haven’t done a painting before or felt the texture of paint between their fingers, some haven’t had the opportunity to go to the beach – so taking off their socks in the sandpit and seeing their toes wiggle in the sand for the very first time is magic!”

The end is nigh fo r the Liebherr ship -to-shore gantry crane at Su lphur Point.

All sheerlegs and style The band’s about to strike up and ‘Tango’ will be stepping out for her last dance. ‘Tango’ – the oldest of Port of Tauranga’s seven shipto-shore gantry cranes – is being stood down, decommissioned.

Her name will be erased from the dance cards.

Tango, as she is called, is the port’s oldest crane and understood to be one of the oldest Liebherr gantry cranes operating anywhere in the world.

“The short answer is the crane has become obsolete,” says Port of Tauranga’s property and infrastructure manager Dan Kneebone.

“Obsolete in the sense we are receiving bigger ships and with bigger ships you need bigger cranes to service them.”

The new Liebherr cranes can lift two containers at a time – so twice as much and twice as fast.

While the traditional tango is a bit of hot and sensuous Argentinian exactness, Port of Tauranga’s ‘Tango’ is more a spindly wallflower sitting prominently at the front of the container terminal wharf – a gigantic praying mantis about to strike, or a giraffe perhaps.

She is prominent on the harbour city’s skyline.

“And she’s there because she’s servicing the coastal feeders,” says Dan. But cranes, like most things, have a design life. For a gantry crane it’s in terms of the number of lifts.

And Tango’s is nearing an end. “It’s like your car,” says Dan. “There are a lot of moving parts constantly being maintained and replaced. It gets to a stage where it’s uneconomic to repair them because they are just too old.” Sometimes the old cranes have an afterlife – they find new purpose elsewhere.

“They can but this one won’t,” says Dan. “It sounds horrible, it’s going to get scrapped.”

This lady has a history. Tango was initially commissioned on the Mount Maunganui Wharf 37 years ago in 1979 as a conventional crane. She was

reincarnated in 1999 – barged across the harbour to Sulphur Point where she became a container crane.

Who knows how many containers she has hoisted ashore or aboard? “A lot of container cranes are designed to do about two million lifts. Some of the new cranes are certified higher. But we just don’t know with Tango.” And apparently there is someone one with a clipboard standing there checking them off? Well, kind of. “The new cranes we could tell you exactly how many lifts, but Tango no.”

The old Liebherr gantry crane will know her time is nearly done. Two new cranes, which arrived in bits from Liebherr’s Killarney factory in Ireland in August, are now being assembled behind her at the container terminal at Sulphur Point.

They are due to be operational later this month. So when the music dies in December, so will Tango.

She will be dismantled, she will slowly disappear off Tauranga’s skyline.

There are still port employees who were around when Tango was commissioned. They will swap stories at a function when she is decommissioned.

Or will it be a wake?

Then the flash new-generation, two-at-a-time Liebherrs will step up for the Port of Tauranga.

Tsunami sirens: who knows best?

Four years ago, when I chaired the Papamoa Progressive Association, we tested two enhanced World War II air-raid sirens to show Tauranga City Council how effective a loud but simple system could be.

It wasn’t well received by some councillors of the day; there were concerns that prolonged exposure could damage hearing! However, there were no sore ears last Saturday when the Bay of Plenty Civil Defence tested the text and email alert systems as part of World Tsunami Awareness Day. While we’ve been able to make some good progress with

evacuation routes and safe zones during the last three years, with more planned, the siren issue is outstanding. The block remains official advice that if a siren system fails, more people are at risk for having trusted in it and waited, than if there were no sirens at all.

There is some truth in this but I don’t believe the issue is that clear-cut.

When I ask people how they wish to be warned in the unlikely event, the number one choice is air-raid sirens. They’re loud, you can’t switch them off like a mobile phone and you don’t have to check your email. For me, it’s not

a question of reliance on sirens alone but a range of warnings, any of which in the absence of another should be enough to get you to evacuate: 1) An earthquake that lasts longer than a minute or is strong enough to knock you off your feet.

2) Loud sirens.

3) Email and text alerts. There will be false alarms and there could be a failure of a siren system but that’s not an excuse for not making it one part of our warning system.

A supermoon to view Western Bay of Plenty residents may notice a larger full moon next Tuesday – but it won’t be sending astronomers crazy, according to a Tauranga Astronomical Society spokesperson.

Stuart Murray says he and fellow astronomers will more likely be watching the shoreline – to see how the larger moon affects the tides.

If weather is fine on November 15, residents will see the largest ‘supermoon’ since 1948. “It will produce a higher tide than usual and a lower tide than usual,” says Stuart. But he’s keeping calm, saying larger moons happen quite regularly – and while this particular one will be the closest for quite some time “it is fairly basic thing that happens”.

But the moon will look larger to the naked eye – it will appear about 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than an apogee full moon – a point when the moon in its orbit is at its greatest distance from earth. And there won’t be a closer full moon until 2024.

The moon’s distance from Earth can vary from a distant apogee of 406,000km to a closer perigee of 357,000km as its orbit around Earth as an ellipse, not a circle.

The moon passes through apogee and perigee each lunar cycle, and occasionally a full moon coincides with a perigee, making a supermoon.

“The moon doesn’t go round the earth in a complete circle each time – it’s a bit eccentric,” says Stuart.

“And on the 13th and 14th [of

November] it’s marginally closer. And because it’s closer it will look bigger – and it should have a reasonable effect on the tides purely because of its slightly greater gravitational attraction,” says Stuart. And for everyday people it will be something spectacular to view from the comfort of their homes.

“Certainly by looking at it, it will look exceptionally bright, but it will not change colour like an eclipse. But it will be a bright object in the sky – and something to look at.”

But Stuart says his society isn’t opening the observatory. “A full moon isn’t much to look at through a telescope because there is no shadow definition and it’s very bright.”

The moon will be closest to the earth – just 356,509km away – at 12.23am on November 15.

Stuart says the best time to view it will be just at dusk.

“Why it looks larger is because the eye relates it to buildings, and houses, and other land-based objects, and as it rises you lose reference to those things.

“The moon always look larger as it rises above the earth in the east, and it is purely an optical phenomenon.”

And it will certainly affect the tides, says Stuart. He might make his way to Fergusson Park – not to watch the moon but watch the tides on the shoreline.

“What will be most interesting is what the sea is doing at low tide. The observatory is at Fergusson Park close to the shore with great sandbars.

“So I think we’ll see more exposed sandbars out into the channel, closer to shore, and at high tide with some wind, may rise almost to the shore grass level at the park. “But these are natural things that occur all of the time.” Merle Foster

“She was built in 1945 for the war effort but the war ended,” says Duane. First stroke of luck. The surplus troop and freight transporter was then gifted to the Royal New Zealand Air Force before being sold to the New Zealand National Airways Corporation, now named Air New Zealand, in the 1950s. The orange flashings in her

new NAC livery probably brought about her name. The DC-3 was leased out to Polynesian Airlines then sold to James Aviation, which converted the workhorse to a top dressing aircraft. It’s that ruggedness, that versatility that led to the DC-3 being described as “a collection of parts flying in loose formation”.

“We were operating in the Kingdom of Tonga and we were looking for a hangar, somewhere to do maintenance,” says Duane. The DC-3 was sitting in the hangar.

“My father Craig Emeny, owner and CEO of Air Chathams, couldn’t bring himself to let her become a museum piece so he hired a couple of aircraft engineers from NZ.” It took six months, pots of cash and equal amounts of wisdom and expertise to get her flying again.

Auctioning off NZ Paralympian blade runner – winner of two gold and silver medals at Rio – Liam Malone will be speaking at a charity auction in town next week.

Ingrid Cotton of Harcourts Advantage Realty Limited is hosting the charity auction next Wednesday, November 16, for the Supported Individualised Lifestyle Choices Charitable Trust, with the aim to raise awareness for the SILC Charitable Trust, as well as SwitchedOn and the Harcourts Foundation.

sportsman who has achieved so much already, New Zealanders are so proud of him,” says Ingrid.

Tauranga girl tops Taekwondo She’s only 16, but Te Puna girl Frances Lloyd is already a world champion in Taekwondo.

The Tauranga Girls’ College student recently travelled to Budapest, Hungary, for the 2016 ITK Taekwondo World Cup, where she was named best female junior competitor out of 1800 athletes from 56 nations.

Frances, a black belt who trains at the Silla TKD Club in Te Puna, says it’s been a long journey getting to this point.

“I spent two to three years training for this particular competition,” says , crediting her AMP Scholarship as an invaluable help in getting her to Hungary.

She competed in two female black belt categories: speciality and sparring.

“Sparring involves touch contact with gear on.

I was in the 65+ weight division, so I was versing massive girls who could have been 100kg,” she says. “In my speciality I faced a range of opponents in size, but they were all between 14 and 18 years old.”

Closer look at the Maungatapu underpass project Bay residents can have an up-close look at how the Maungatapu underpass project is shaping up at a community open day set for tomorrow, from 10am-3pm.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is hosting a community event from Maungatapu School, offering a fun day out for everyone, including kids’ activities, project information and hourly guided walks around the construction site.

There will also be a chance to hear first-hand how things are progressing – and when walking the tour there will be crew around the site happy to answer any questions.

The Maungatapu underpass is being constructed on State Highway 29A and includes new cycle links and a cycle and pedestrian bridge above Welcome Bay Rd. The project began in July 2015 and has an estimated time of 2.5 years to complete it sometime in 2018.

NZTA highway manager Niclas Johansson says the underpass will separate state highway and local traffic, reducing congestion at peak times and making travel safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Self-drive vehicle test part of traffic conference A three-day national conference for the New Zealand Local Authority Traffic Institute – known as Trafinz – starts next Wednesday, November 16, in Tauranga.

And it includes a demonstration of a self-driving car – the first event of its kind in New Zealand.

Volvo and Trafinz aim to demonstrate an autonomous vehicle in action on November 18 – the day the conference concludes.

The New Zealand Transport Agency and Ministry of Transport have been working with car manufacturer Volvo and Trafinz to ensure the trial will operate within the law, including appropriately managing any safety risks.

Volvo NZ national manager Coby Duggan says the vehicle will self-drive on a 10km-15km stretch of public road in Tauranga using sophisticated technology to navigate it – with driver interaction only required at the halfway-point of the trip.

Coby says the demonstration will take place in a ‘real world’ environment with other motorists.

Meanwhile, the 2016 Trafinz Conference from November 16-18 will have the theme ‘Communities, Growth and Transportation’.

The conference – at trinity Wharf – will centre on how NZ communities can successfully manage the impacts of growth into the future, while delivering a safe and efficient transport system that is well balanced to meet the needs of its diverse communities.

“The future for NZ’s people, places and infrastructure will be influenced by how we plan and manage all aspects of transportation, not just the roads,” says the Trafinz conference webpage.

“One of NZ’s major challenges is managing growth and seizing the opportunities this presents, but also being mindful of meeting people’s transport expectations and ensuring our rural communities and aging population remain connected with the wider NZ.”

Cooling your home efficiently The temperatures are creeping up, summer is approaching and people will be starting to feel it heat up.

Keeping the home cool in summer can be a real chore, but there are a few efficient ways to keep it chilled inside.

Opening up the doors and windows is a good place to start – creating a cross-breeze by opening doors and windows in different rooms will allow the breeze to move through the home and keep it cooler.

When using your air conditioner, try using just the fan mode. Most heat pumps and air conditioners have a ‘fan only’ setting which is great for creating cross-draughts, and having windows and doors open will aid this also.

And if it’s the humidity rather than the temperature that’s driving you up the wall try using the dehumidifier setting on your air conditioner.

This mode only uses less electricity than the full cooling mode but also helps pull the moisture from the air. Keep the doors and windows shut when

using this mode. And if nothing else is working, try your cooling mode.

Shut all of the doors and windows of the room you’re trying to chill and it’s best to cool one room rather than the whole house.

Set the temperature to about 22 degrees. This will use less power and the room doesn’t cool any faster if you use a lower setting.

Simple – use cash to be better with money Have you ever got to the end of a pay cycle and thought: ‘Where has all my money gone?’

You can account for your fixed costs, mortgage or rent, weekly payments and the like. But by your calculations you should’ve had so much left and that’s what’s slightly confusing, because where did that money go?

Today we’re likely to use either credit or debit cards to pay for things and by doing so we tend to lose touch with our money and how we use it, until we view our bank statement. If you need to be better with money then I suggest your interaction with money become more transparent.

To do this I suggest allocating yourself a weekly spending budget, which would of course be what

remains from your net wage minus your living costs and a minimum 10 per cent set aside for savings. However, the more you can save the better.

Take cash out for that total amount and use only that cash for spending. The constant physical interaction with your money will be a reminder of how much you can spend, as will the remaining balance in your wallet.

Try also to set a goal to have some of the spending money leftover at the end of your pay week to add to your savings. Even if it’s $20 it adds up to an additional $1000 at the end of a year; and of course you would feel better for it.

So go on, give it a go. I would be interested in your experience.

Tequila sunrise in Greerton Village As soon as the cherry pink blossoms of October are over, Greerton Village bursts into a brilliant display of tequila sunrise.

This award-winning hybrid tea rose, also known as the Dicobey, is dense and bushy, growing to about one metre high.

Flowering for 10 months of the year, the deep rich golden yellow blooms are tipped with orange-red.

“It’s the most beautiful view out of my window,” says Greerton Village Mainstreet manager Sally Benning.

“I am English and I do love roses. This rose is very popular in Europe and New Zealand and lasts for 10 months.

A lot of people come here and photograph them, including tourists, so that means they’re going global.

“It’s a lovely thing to have in Greerton Village that’s unique to here, and they’re very much enjoyed.”

Quoted in Sally Allison’s book ‘Shrub Roses’: “As fiery as its cocktail namesake and as dazzling as a sunrise”, the tequila sunrise was originally developed as a new rose in 1985.

Winner of England’s Royal National Rose Society Gold Medal in 1988, this very

striking breed has dark green leaves, providing the perfect foliage for its four-inch flower, with up to 40 petals.

Tauranga City councillor Terry Molloy, who was chairman for eight years of Greerton Village Redevelopment

Committee, donated some of the cherry trees that now grace the roads. He recalls more than a decade ago, the then mainstreet manager, in conjunction with the redevelopment committee and Greerton retailers, selected the rose for the Greerton Village gardens.

The brightly coloured roses are displayed outside the Greerton Library, the Greerton Hall, and in some of the nearby roadside Rosalie Liddle Crawford gardens.

Organisers of the world International Men’s Day says children suffer when they lose a father or grandfather prematurely. “So let’s work together to turn the tide of male ill-health and suicide.”

Conveying intimate messages in thread Currently on show at the Cottleston Art Gallery in Greerton is a textile exhibition by Viv Davy.

Using thread and natural fibres to convey the complexities of life, Viv reaches back into early New Zealand colonial past, when women were settling here in the 19th Century and caring for their family’s clothes and household items.

Handwritten with a natural pigment onto linen fabric, the words from the writings of these women are taken from historic resources including the Alexander

Turnbull Library.

As first-hand accounts of their direct experiences around washing, drying, ironing, mending and remaking garments and household linens it’s a rare glimpse into an often forgotten time.

Lost Voices II was started as part of Viv’s research into Valuing the Mundane completed for her Post

As part of her thesis work, Viv created The Codex Series, diaries that continue for one calendar year, with daily pages recording her mundane domestic chores. A new love at a new home

Blair Graham and Aimee Driscoll have entered their piece of paradise into the Bay of Plenty Garden & Art Festival’s Garden and Art Trail from November 17-20. But they claim they are not gardeners.

“I didn’t call myself a gardener until my name tag [for the festival] came in the mail the other day,” jokes Blair. “And we definitely weren’t gardeners when we arrived in Tauranga.”

The family moved to the city – and their Selwyn St property – in February 2015. The 1950s Art Deco Villa’s garden had been established by the previous owners.

“We’ve been very busy settling in – and last year we had this brilliant idea we’d enter our garden into the festival,” says Blair.

“I used to go to bed reading ‘Dirt Bike’ magazines and now I read gardening books.”

“It’s an urban garden and we are right on the edge of the city,” says Aimee. Their garden festival description says the compact innercity garden fits snuggly around the villa – with indoor-outdoor urban living mixing formal, edible and tropical garden elements with function and fun. And includes an open fire and pizza oven, and water

features. How big is this urban garden? “Tiny,” says Blair. With formal, edible and tropical garden elements – a pizza oven and water feature? “Yeah,” laugh the couple.

“Basically, we’re on about 430m2 here – and the house is about 154m2. So the house takes a large chunk of the site,” says Blair.

“And the house is an L-shape and the garden works around it,” says Aimee. The family say the previous owners had taken plants and water features with them – so they’ve added quite a lot.

“We added the pizza oven – and a lot of a plants.

“The front part of the garden is formal – it’s a mixture of roses and little box hedges and a miniature Japanese maple.

“Down the side of the house needed some TLC – we had let it get overgrown and the fence was looking pretty tired.

“So we’ve fixed all that up and added a whole row of berries that run right down one side of the section. And we’ve added a few other bits and pieces including espaliering a crabapple tree,” says Blair. Espalier is a technique used to train plants to grow flat against vertical surfaces. It is an excellent space saving technique for those with small gardens.

“In the vege garden we also espaliered a fig tree – the garden has got high walls all around and we have covered all of the walls in plants.”

There were two pears and a couple of grapes – they’ve added fig

and crab apple trees.

“And we’ve had a crash-course on espalier as it is relatively new – how they grow and tie them down. So it’s certainly been a big learning curve,” says Blair.

Aimee says there were also nine confiner trees that were looking very sad. “So we pulled those out.”

Who does the gardening? “Blair is the gardener – and I am the labourer,” says Aimee.

“Aimee is the designer – she goes and buys most of the plants and colour coordinates and all of that stuff – and I carry wheelbarrowloads of dirt,” claims Blair. So it depends who you ask.

Do they count themselves as gardeners now? “No, not really.”

“We’ll see how the festival goes,” says Blair.

“I’ve learnt a lot but I’ve had to go around with a gardening book and put tags with names of the plants on each – otherwise if people asked ‘what plant do you think that is’ I wouldn’t know,” admits Aimee.

And from a family perspective the garden has seen them spend more quality time together.

“We’ve got three girls – and in the berry garden we planted 20-odd strawberries, raspberries, blackberries etc – they’ve been out there doing that with me in the garden,” says Aimee.

The home of books in Mount Maunganui is now fully repaired after an asbestos scare – and is back to full running capacity.

After nearly 12 months, the fences around the Mount Maunganui Library have come down, as work in and around the building has been completed.

Initially, the grounds outside the library were fenced off following the discovery of asbestos in the soil in December 2015. The asbestos was successfully removed in March 2016.

The fences remained to allow necessary seismic upgrading to be carried out in June 2016, which saw plywood installed against the library’s internal walls to prevent them from falling inwards in the event of an earthquake.

“It has been a disruptive period for both staff and library-users; although the library remained open during the work, we did notice a drop in visitor numbers, so it will a great to be back to full capacity,” said Tauranga City libraries manager Jill Best.

To celebrate the completion of the refurbishment

work, there will be a week-long, fun-filled programme of events for all to enjoy at Mount Maunganui Library.

Mount Library Lovers’ Fun Week from November 21-26 will include a summer cooking demonstration, B’Dazzled Balloons, Scottish country dancing, big book sale, and much more.

“A celebration is just what the library needs. We pride ourselves on being a community hub and events like these are a great way to connect with the community,” says Jill.

The library was initially built in 1967 by the Mount Maunganui Borough Council, and a 450m2 extension was added in 1988. With local government amalgamation in 1989, the library came under the control of the Tauranga District Council – and now Tauranga City Council.

This has been the first sizable refurbishment work completed since the library was extended, says Jill, who says all of the same services the library previously provided will still be available.

Get crafty and develop your DIY skills Bay of Plenty locals are invited to head to Bunnings Warehouse Mount Maunganui on weekends throughout November to receive expert advice and help develop their DIY skills through a range of DIY workshops.

Every Saturday and Sunday throughout November, team members will host free DIY workshops for adults and children, sharing their expert advice through easy to follow steps.

Adult DIY workshops are held

from 11am-1pm, and children’s workshops are held from 10am2pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

“Bay of Plenty locals of all skill levels are encouraged to come to

Free kids DIY workshops will also run each weekend throughout November with fun-themed workshops including garden creatures, craft, paint and Christmas workshops, as well as many more.

Priority One’s business relocations manager Max Mason has given some interesting insights into how he persuades companies to bring their operations, investments and job opportunities to the Bay of Plenty.

He likens the negotiations to a job interview – the sort of ‘what do you know about the company’ type of questions, why do you want the job? And why should we hire you?

Urban Development important instrument The National Policy Statement on Urban Development Capacity announced this month is an important instrument to assist councils to meet demand for urban development.

Property Council New Zealand chief executive Connal Townsend says his organisation supports a NPS that requires councils to make sufficient land available for urban development.

This includes housing, business, retail and other development that underpin successful communities.

With the NPS the Government has added another vital tool to address New Zealand’s growing housing crisis. It supports the recently announced Housing Infrastructure Fund, and Special Housing Areas and social housing rejuvenation.

“We are pleased a NPS has been put in place, particularly as we have been advocating for it for well over five years,” says Connal.

“The NPS is a step forward where in the past councils have failed to address the need for new greenfield developments and growth-friendly planning rules to foster economic and urban growth.”

Connal says nationally he’s seen poor decisions regarding zoning land for both housing and commercial activity.

“For example, in Auckland we have seen a 350 per cent increase in the median price of a section over 25 years as the legacy councils did not zone enough land to meet the growing demand.”

Similar problems are occurring in Hamilton, Queenstown and other major urban centres, says Connal. “The flow-on effect is we are now experiencing nationwide pressure on housing affordability.

“However, we still have concerns over the definition

of the term ‘sufficient’. Under the updated NPS, councils are not required to provide additional land over and above what is needed to meet demand.

“This could allow councils to understate demand and overstate capacity to avoid relaxing land use rules to facilitate development” Connal says the NPS will be a ‘wet bus ticket’ without greater guidance as to which tools councils should use to ensure there is more than sufficient development capacity.

“This includes independently reviewing the assessments and monitoring carried out by councils,” says Connal.

“Growth and development do not occur in preordained straight lines so the NPS must ensure council plans are responsive.

“It is crucial the Government and councils use the extensive experience of the development sector. Private sector knowledge and buy-in is crucial to achieving successful outcomes under the NPS.” However, Connal says land supply is only one factor in the development of residential and commercial buildings.

“Roads, water, electricity and transport are all crucial to development but currently there is a massive lack of funding. The NPS will only be effective if there is sufficient infrastructure funding.

“There needs to be an important national conversation about how we fund the tens of billions of dollars of infrastructure which is needed as cities grow.”

You could build a table with in-built slots in the middle for drinks and ice. Or do this using a barbecue table.

Old wine barrels make good drink coolers. Or cut out the seat of a chair – and insert a steel

bucket to make a drinks holder.

Ditch the plant from a pot and use that. Or how about a cane washing basket?

Another idea – have you got a plastic clam shell? It will work. Or even try the kids blow-up paddle pool if needs must. But make sure any young guests know it’s off limits.

And if you haven’t got any of these items on hand – there is more super simple objects that turn into the perfect makeshift drinks cooler for an evening or afternoon. A wheelbarrow. And the bonus is you can wheel it back and forth to grab ice or more drinks. Bet you never thought of that?

If you’re burning it, please permit it With the Western Bay of Plenty in the second month of a restricted fire season, homeowners are being reminded of the need for permits to light fires.

Permits are a must if you want to light an outdoor fire in the Western BOP during the restricted fire season from October 1, 2016, to April 1, 2017.

This year permits are being

issued by Pumicelands Rural Fire Authority – but the process of getting a permit is the same as usual. Permits are free – the Western Bay of Plenty District Council processes them.

A permit will last two weeks from the date of issue.

A home without a clock doesn’t cut it There are heaps of ways to decorate the home and show off your personal flair and style. And one way is choosing a clock to set the tone for your décor.

My little darling recently broke my prized large white understated clock that hung in the kitchen-dining area.

So I went searching for a replacement – and I was surprised!

Move over the loud tickers of the past and the traditional grandfather clock. There is so much variety in colour, style and purpose of clocks today.

There’s modern wall clocks, others with antique detailing. There’s styles including French provincial, Roman, nautical, the retro look, garden wire, the wood look, and more!

There’s also difference in materials – clocks made of aluminium, metal, wood, marble, plastic, copper, iron. The list goes on.

Others have no numbers, no dots – just the two hands. More clocks are quiet these days – thank goodness! And some have a third hand that moves quickly around the face to show how seconds – and our lives – are quickly passing us by.

I don’t like these ‘third’ hands.

A neat option I’ve discovered is a clock where you stick the two hands to an interior wall – and receive photographs frames to hang up to depict the numbers.

This makes for a very artistic personal clock. You can also just buy the hands!

Others have a clock included into wall-hanging words – such as ‘love’ and ‘home’ and ‘bach’.

You can buy a craft clock movement shaft – and create your own clock! What?

So how do you choose a clock? I reckon decide if you want it for décor reasons or actually telling the time. This will narrow down the options. The next consideration is space. If you have limited room choose a smaller clock – pass up the idea of a grandfather clock for instance or one that takes up heaps of room on a small wall. If you have heaps of room, go wild! These days some people even make a feature wall of different types of clocks.

So yes – time is ticking quickly towards Christmas and I want a new clock up before the silly season arrives. The pressure is on to choose.

Dwellings numbers up 50 per cent The Bay of Plenty experienced a 50 per cent increase in new dwellings in the year to September this year, compared to the same period 12 months earlier, according to Statistics New Zealand.

The BOP region is among all nine North Island regions to consent more new dwellings in the latest year ended to September 2016 than in the previous one, says Statistics NZ business indicators senior manager Neil Kelly.

Almost 30,000 new homes were consented in the year to September 2016, up 14 per cent from the September 2015 year, says Neil.

And within this, North Island dwelling numbers were up 25 per cent, but South Island numbers fell 3.9 per cent.

“All nine North Island regions consented more new dwellings in the latest year ended September than

in the previous one,” says Neil. “This was led by Auckland and nearby regions.”

Significant new dwelling increases in the September 2016 year include Auckland up 1239 dwellings or 14 per cent, Waikato up 845 or 31 per cent, Bay of Plenty up 829 homes or 50 per cent, Wellington up 458 houses or 30 per cent, and Northland up 321 or 40 per cent.

In the South Island, 408 – or 31 per cent more new dwellings – were consented in Otago, but there were 737, or 11 per cent, fewer in Canterbury.

In September 2550 new homes were consented, up 308 from September 2015.

When seasonally adjusted, the number rose 0.2 per cent from August 2016, following a 1.5 per cent fall in August.

Consents for all buildings including alterations were valued at $1.6 billion in the month – including $1.1 billion for residential buildings and $509 million for non-residential buildings.

Homeowners around the Western Bay of Plenty will be opening their mailboxes to a Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust in the next few weeks.

Their grant of $200,000 was presented to Habitat for Humanity Trustee Paul Broatch recently.

“Habitat for Humanity believes everyone deserves a decent place to live. TECT’s funding is vital for us to continue with our building

programme. This money will go directly toward helping us house needy families in Tauranga,” says Paul. During the last 22 years, the trust has granted $93 million to a variety of local community organisations and causes.

TECT general manager Wayne Werder says more than 200 organisations and causes will benefit from TECT’s financial support in 2016-2017.

“I think it’s fantastic that we have this asset for the WBOP region and we can support a variety of causes and organisations that play such an important role in our community.”

Set up in 1993 as part of the electricity industry reforms, the trust uses its income to make direct and indirect distributions to its beneficiaries who are eligible TrustPower consumers in Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty.

And during the last 23 years TECT has distributed $306 million by way of cheques back to consumers. The trust is currently preparing to send out this year’s TECT cheque to more

Choosing education for a brighter future What next? That’s the question parents often face at this time of year.

As the school year comes to a close, it’s a time for reflection and future planning, with parents evaluating where their child is at and where

they hope to go.

This is particularly relevant for students making the transition to senior high school level – Year 11.

For our Year 10 students and their parents, end of term marks a milestone moment as they will become the first group of students at ACG Tauranga to undertake International General Certificate of Secondary Education, a prestigious and internationally recognised qualification for 14 to 16-year-olds.

IGCSE is delivered during one year, and provides students with a wonderful foundation by preparing them for A Level Qualifications at Years 12 and

13. It has a stronger focus on external examinations over internal assessments, and February to October is spent focused on learning, with exams held between October and November on the subjects taught.

Kiwis encouraged to ‘Switch to Water’ to save their smiles New Zealanders are being challenged to ditch the sugary drinks and Switch to Water for November as part of the New Zealand Dental Association’s annual awareness campaign.

Former Silver Fern netball player Irene van Dyk is fronting the campaign as the National Oral Health Day ambassador for the second year in a row, saying the challenge offers a great chance for those wanting

to improve their health. Every year New Zealanders drink on average 115 litres of soft drink per person, which is having a hugely negative effect on Kiwis’ health and wellbeing, leading to tooth decay and contributing greatly to obesity and other health problems.

Nearly-two thirds of adults and onethird of children are either overweight or obese in New Zealand. Last year, 29,000 children had one or more teeth removed due to dental decay.

“Switching to water is such a simple solution to a big problem, and I’m passionate about encouraging all New Zealanders to join me in ditching the sugary drinks for the month of November – and beyond – to kick start a healthier lifestyle,” says Irene.

“The everyday drink of choice that’s best for both our bodies and our teeth is the drink that’s cheapest and freely available – water. Certainly during my time as a

sportsperson it was really important to stay well hydrated and water is, quite simply, the best way to do that.”

New Zealand Dental Association chief executive Dr David Crum says dentists throughout New Zealand are seeing the negative effects of sugary drinks every day.

Do you have an ‘itis’? – Part 2 Recently, I spoke with a couple who had osteoarthritis in their hands, back and also had issues with muscle pain and ligament damage.

I created a comprehensive nutritional programme and they’ve both experienced significant improvement to these long-term problems.

If your problem has the suffix ‘itis’ then it is an inflammatory disease. The central component to any nutritional programme will be an anti-inflammatory diet and supplements to help shift the balance from pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory.

The results are often startling and can show within a few months.

Resveratrol is noted for its anti-aging qualities but I use it as much for its antiinflammatory function. Research from ‘Thorax 2003’ shows resveratrol reduces

Does majority support a new Katikati library?

I’m writing about the proposed new library and hub in Katikati.

Given the huge opposition I get to the whole project being bought forward at this time from the original date of 2021.

When I sat downtown getting signatures for freezing our rates, our part of the exercise got roughly 1500 people to sign in Katikati.

I made a point of asking most of them if they wanted a new library - and only four said ‘Yes’. Other documents I have give the same message. I’ve had dozens of people approach me since the election to put off building the new library, until the financial implications are pinned down.

I have met recently with some of them to further assess the situation.

There are nearly 8000 people effected, but it seems to me this project is being pushed by a vocal minority.

For democracy to be properly served this position needs to be quickly clarified. If I can be assured

A pittance difference

One wonders what make of calculator Labour Party Leader Andrew Little used to work it out that people on the dole will be better off working on some time-wasting, soul-destroying job set by a Government department on the minimum wage?

Roughly the minimum wage is $15.25 an hour take the tax off that and you have $439.57.

Now all that will be spent because no one can live and save on that amount of money so GST leaves a single person with a cash amount better off than on the dole by $84.42.

Now the single dole is $355.16 in the hand. Being on the dole means no absolute daily spending on petrol and lunches etc. So basically there is no bloody difference in the two amounts.

The increased cost to the Government will only be the $84.42 difference.

And Andy wants to run the country. God save us!

Do a laser light display For all those who intend to set off fireworks, may I say this to you as individuals, charities, schools or whoever?

Imagine that a vulnerable loved one is alone. It may be a young child, it may be an elderly relative. Without any warning, large blasts occur in their vicinity. They have no idea whether this is a single event or will go on at intermittent intervals for that evening, or just that evening. It could be the start of something much worse.

Distress levels elevate, no support is available; there is no idea of whether the stimulation will stop or go on and on.

Eventually your loved one may lose control of bladder or bowel or vomit as a nervous reaction to the unrelenting distress. Or worse.

That is a horrible scenario, but that’s what you are going to do to my loved one.

Yes, my loved one is a pet, but maybe when you set off your supposedly pleasurable experience, you might like to think of how, for example, a violent home invasion would affect you. That is what you are doing.

Shall I frighten your children to the same degree?

Of course, as Roger Rabbits suggests, there should be a ban. The only real motivation to continue this practice is for commercial gain for a small minority, who place their interests above others. To those who promote large displays, have you not learned from the Bethlehem disaster?

Did those who didn’t think before letting of fireworks compensate the owners of the lost dog? Did they come and clean up vomit in my house, nearly 10 kilometres away from their self-indulgent nonsense? Why cannot you think of doing something more realistic in this day and age? Do a laser light display. Between the commercial parasites and Christian entities, there is a gulf, but the effects are still the same on my dog.

I make no apology. To each and every one of you that lights the touch paper: you owe me and my dog an apology. But also an explanation as to why you persist in this archaic nonsense.

Listen to the people! Sending all the wrong signals

And so another year has been and gone and the usual letters and articles regarding fireworks issue forth once again and we are still no further forward in having this dreadful celebration banned.

I read the letter ‘Lighten up, fireworks are a cracker!’ (The Weekend Sun, November 4). Short Fuse from Otumoetai has never had has obviously his daughter had to see her beloved horse bolt in absolute terror into a barbed wire fence and having to look on while her pet is put out of its agony. Or his children have never suffered burns or been hurt, or his property and/or house have not caught fire due to a wayward skyrocket, or his dogs been absolutely petrified the only way to calm them is medication.

But perhaps to him these are all minor incidents and it doesn’t matter that they are on the increase and the majority of New Zealanders would love to see public displays only. Perhaps one day, as Rogers Rabbits points out, we will have a government in power that will actually listen to the people who pay their wages.

So Phil Gifford, one of the nation’s pre-eminent rugby apologists, thinks the drunken basher Losi Filipo is better off in the embrace of his beloved game than in prison.

I wonder if Mr Gifford’s daughter had been the one attacked

by Losi Filipo, had it been Mr Gifford’s son whose head was stomped by the same drunken Filipo, would he be showing the same compassion and understanding?

Just because people play rugby, it doesn’t make them immune to the laws of the land and the expectations of a decent society.

And the next time some other young man gets a skin full, attacks and injures, would Mr Gifford suggest he too is sentenced to time in a rugby team?

If rugby had been doing its job in the first place – providing the structured, disciplined, positive environment that Mr Gifford talks up – then this should not have happened.

The same environment, even on a professional footing, has demonstrated shortcomings – ie Aaron Smith and the Chiefs.

And how come prison is good for some but not rugby players?

I suggest the treatment of Filipo sends all the wrong signals to young sportsmen who already have a sense of self entitlement and over-importance. A short sharp incarceration just may have made Filipo a “better man” and an example to others who may offend.

What makes a happy life?

This is a question that has perplexed people for centuries.

Some think: “If only I won Lotto, then I would be happy”.

Other say: “If I was famous or successful then I would be happy”.

But recently the results of the longest study on happiness ever undertaken was published. Harvard University studied 724 men for more than 75 years to answer the question: ‘What makes a happy life?’ Now only 60 men are alive and they are well into their 90s. This study included interviews with their wives and families, examined their medical records, and even did brain scans. The overriding lesson they learned was this: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier.

that loneliness kills. Sadly, we live in a society that encourages isolation.

Sitting on Facebook is not what is meant by a good social connection.

Yes, it might be just a bit better than nothing – but it’s no substitute for having a beer or coffee with a friend.

Similarly, doing internet banking from your computer on your own at home might be convenient, but if you want to live longer and stave off loneliness go to the bank and talk to the teller or the people you meet on the way.

The fact is people who are more socially connected to family, friends and community are happier, are physically healthier and they live longer. Loneliness is toxic, even brain function declines sooner as a result.

I’m reminded of the Bible’s fifth commandment. “Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” To honour someone is to keep good healthy relationships with them.

As Jesus said: “Love one another as I have loved you”. Church is a good place to form good healthy social relationships. You might like to start there.

There’s a better life Acts 16 in the Bible records that Paul and Silas were put in jail to stop them speaking and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to the people of a town.

Before being thrown in jail the magistrates ordered Paul and Silas were to be stripped of their clothing and then beaten with wooden rods.

After all this the jailer was commanded to keep them secure, no doubt to stop them escaping.

Despite the beatings and being in a very dark place, the Bible tells us that at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God. Then the unexpected took place; suddenly there was a great earthquake, all the doors of the prison were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed.

This led the jailer to fall to his knees, trembling before Paul and Silas. He obviously realised something supernatural had happened. The jailer then cried out to Paul and Silas: ‘What must I do to be saved?’ The answer was simple: “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved”. The answer is the same today!

What is your jail? What has been stopping you from living a better life? Wrong thinking? Wrong teachings during the years? Hurts which have been done to you?

If your mind is holding you from the freedom the Bible holds, then today is your day to change.

Yes, there really is a better life. Perhaps not perfect, but better.

Allow Jesus Christ into your private personal jail. His blessing will be freedom for you, now and in your future.

Kids getting square eyes from screen time?

Family First NZ says a survey highlighting the concerns of parents about screen time for their children is a very real problem which the Government and the Ministries of Health and Education are ignoring.

The 2015 report

by Family First on the increasing use of screen time by children was critical of government agencies for a lack of guidelines to families.

It says the Ministry of Health should consider screen time as a personal health and well-being issue to be formally included in the health education curriculum and taught in the classroom from primary school.

The report “We Need To Talk – Screen Time In NZ Media Use: An Emerging Factor in Child and Adolescent Health” by biologist and psychologist Dr Aric Sigman says although screen technology may be a beneficial aspect of modern life, there is growing concern from health and development experts about the disproportionate use in many families’ lives, particularly the young in New Zealand.

The report was originally commissioned by family group Family First NZ in response to admissions from the Ministry of Health that they only provided guidelines for screen time use outside of school time – (a maximum of two hours per day for five to 18 year olds) – and no guidelines at all for under fives, or to the Ministry of Education or ECE’s.

The Ministry of Education told Family First, “It is up to individual schools to decide the extent to which

they will use digital technology to support teaching and learning.”

The Ministry has not undertaken specific research on appropriate amounts of daily screen time for young people.

Aric says, “Parents, children and teachers remain unaware of the medical and developmental risks and the position of medical bodies on discretionary screen time. The majority of children and adolescents in New Zealand, including toddlers, continue to significantly exceed medical guidelines for screen time.”

The ages at which children start viewing screens and the number of hours watched per day is increasingly linked to negative physiological changes, medical conditions and development outcomes including significant sleep disturbances, attention problems and impulsiveness.

“Children are more susceptible to developing a longterm problematic dependency on technology.”

Aric suggests health professionals in New Zealand should consider incorporating the topic of media use and health into their dealings with families.

“When considering any evidence on child screen use presented to them, policy makers should be highly vigilant in ensuring a high degree of ‘information hygiene’ and establish whether screen-related industries have played any part in such research.”

He says parents should minimise screen media in children’s bedrooms, and establish clear rules and limits.

Following the fair in May, all of the sellers involved kept asking Mira and Brian when the next one would be, while all the buyers were also itching to come back, she says.

“We love providing events for the local community so we thought holding the fair every three months in Tauranga would be great.

“Many vinyl lovers travel to our fair from various towns and we know some have not missed a single fair. Records come and go so there is always something new and exciting here available for all ages.”

This Sunday, November 13, will see Otumoetai Rotary host the eighth annual Child Cancer Foundation golf tournament at the Omokoroa Golf Course.

Otumoetai Rotary club member Bevan Rakoia says all proceeds this year go to the Child Cancer Foundation, as they have every year.

“It’s a charity golf tournament to raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation.

“The golf tournament is in it’s eighth year and they’ve been supporting the Child Cancer Foundation for those eight years.

“There are normally about 60 players and the aim is to raise $10,000. I think we’re up to $9000,” says Bevan.

There are lots of prizes to be won and the tournament is supported by local businesses and anyone is welcome.

“Anyone can play – it’s $35 per player for 18 holes.”

Players should arrive at 10am for registration, and the day will be followed by light refreshments and prizegiving.

Omokoroa Golf Club manager Graham Mushett says the club is honoured to be hosting the event.

“We’re always happy to host such worthwhile events that give back to community.”

“It’s guaranteed to be a pretty good day, it’s always a good day,” says Bevan.

It certainly wasn’t love at first sight.

“I thought she was…umm…heavy-arsed looking,” says John Redding. ‘She’ is a car.

“A big-bottomed girl,” corrects Lindsay Redding, wife, co-owner, co-minder, co-caretaker of perhaps Bethlehem’s most stylish, and sophisticated of ladies on the road, a 1951 Lagonda 2.6 litre four-door saloon.

Sometimes it’s not the idea but the words that are the problem. The Lagonda is thickset, set squarely on the road, or in this case on John and Lindsay’s front lawn under a fluttering New Zealand flag. Thickset but quite regal and with an aluminium torso that makes her deceptively light.

Despite his initial misgivings, John’s feelings for ‘she’ have deepened. “Everything about that car is quality, just taking her somewhere is very satisfying.” He talks warmly, like a proud dad.

Moments that spark the love

From the moment the doors click – they don’t slam – to the moment the straight six-power plant ‘cackles’ and propels you to 70m/hr or 110km/h in little more than 17 seconds, the Lagonda is special.

The clock set in the burr walnut dash peaks at 90m/ hr. “I have already had it well over the speed limit, but I better not say that. Past 70m/hr, put it that way.”

A thoroughbred needs exercise. “But not with me in it,” says Lindsay.

And there is good breeding here, quite exceptional and exclusive. Lagonda is a British luxury marque – established at the beginning of last century and owned

by Aston Martin since 1947. Of that company’s DB5 was James Bonds choice of wheels.

Other big industry names had their fingerprints all over the Lagonda – like a certain Walter Owen Bentley, who designed the engine. And today a pristine example of his workmanship is sitting on that Bethlehem front lawn beneath that fluttering NZ flag.

An origin story

And we are standing there worshipping the beautiful flowing lines, touching, stroking and making all the appropriate adoring sounds that proud parents do. Everyone loves a vintage car, especially one with about nine separate components woven into just one mudguard. “Do you know the origins of Lagonda?,” asks Lindsay. It’s apparently a native American Shawnee name for Wilbur Gunn’s home town in Ohio, Gunn being the founder of Lagonda.

This car was derelict when pulled from a building 40 years ago. “It was a hell of a mess,” says John. But even

as a wreck it was a blessed when it fell into the hands of Bill Janes of Greerton.

“An incredible man,” says John. “They often say it’s the magic of the man, he creates things from nothing.”

And when John and his wife heard one bit of Bill Janes’ “magic” might be for sale he made a pitch for it after cashing up a 1928 ‘gangster’ Hudson and a front wheel drive Triumph Toledo.

It was the brakes that did it for the Hudson. “One day I would go into the testing station and get a Warrant [of Fitness] and the next day the car would have no brakes at all. This love-hate relationship went on for years until I couldn’t take it any longer.”

The Hudson is now in an English museum and the Lagonda occupies its space in John’s garage.

“Bill Janes understood our love of cars; and, secondly, I promised it would never leave the country under my ownership. It will be handed down.”

Talking sense... and dollars

Of course money was in the equation too. So what value do you apply to rare?

Rare because there’s possibly just one other drop head coupe, the sports version, here in NZ and just 18 coupes and saloons worldwide.

“Does the money really matter?” says John. He makes it sound unsavoury. Suffice to say it was a gentlemen’s agreement and he is staying stum.

“But I can tell you they are worth 90,000 pounds or NZ$150,000 in England.”

And judging by the photographs online, John and Lindsay’s Lagonda is apparently one of the nicer ones, if not the nicest.

They still make Lagondas, like the Taraf Lagonda.

Roughly translated from Arab, ‘Taraf’ means ultimate luxury. A 5.9 litre V12 with a rocket propelled price tag at 696,000 British pounds or nearly NZ$1.2 million. Luxury isn’t cheap.

A fragile lover

But even luxury can break. “The hardest thing with a Lagonda like ours is the motor,” says John. “They basically die and you can’t get the bits. But we are blessed because we do have the bits.”

And if there is an accident, regardless of whose fault it is, there’s little chance of it being repaired.

“It wouldn’t be something you could just take down to the panel shop and say: ‘Fix it’ because there aren’t the skills around.”

Music from every direction Music keeps arriving from every direction. I try and keep up, usually with only limited success. It often feels like trying to catch a train that is already leaving the station. Let me offer an example...

One of many people I follow, so as to keep an eye on new music, is a South African ‘musicologist’ named Richard Heslop. He has a wider knowledge of music, new and old, than perhaps anyone else I know of. Recently, he sent out a post titled ‘20 Terrific Albums From 2016 That You May Not Have Heard’. Well, I did actually know two of the artists (though one was famous English folk singer Sandy Denny); I hadn’t heard of a single album on the list.

I have since obtained 11 of them and listened to five. One I don’t like, one is odd but probably astounding, the others are brilliant. So, in the next little while expect reviews of some obscure but wonderful stuff. In the meantime, I’ve been enjoying some rather more mainstream stuff. And also another local offering. Here we go...

No let-up for Lenny

Ex-mayoral candidate Graeme Purches and other Leonard Cohen fans must be delighted and surprised at the arrival of yet another Cohen album (and the promise of more to come). Laughing Lenny has always recorded at, let’s say, a measured pace, producing albums with about the frequency of the late Stanley Kubrick unveiling films, five between 1980 and 2010. Now with ‘You Want It Darker’, he follows ‘Old Ideas’ and ‘Popular Problems’ with his third album in four years.

And it’s a distinct holistic piece of work, obviously – signalled by a late reprise of the song ‘Treaty’ – intended as a whole, a rich meditation on religion and relationships in later life shot through with characteristic dry humour and all set to a mixture of sleek understated beats and lush sympathetic string arrangements.

There are moments that hark back to earlier Cohen, an echo of ‘Anthem’ in

‘Treaty’s’ musical changes and elsewhere a nod to ‘Dance Me To The End of Love’ in the lilting female harmonies.

Cohen surely breaks a record for the number of ambiguous songs that appear addressed to either God, a lover, or his audience, but conspicuously neglect to kneel in front of any naked women, a not infrequently occurrence on previous albums. Instead here he laments that he “doesn’t need a lover” because “the wretched beast is tame”.

There are many intimations of mortality – that last quote was from a song called ‘Leaving the Table’ but while interpreting the songs as farewell statements it’s worth remembering that, according to interviews, Cohen has been trying to finish ‘Treaty’ for more than 20 years. Listening to its magnificent honed-down deceptive simplicity it was worth the wait.

Jack takes a look back

This came out a couple of months back and I missed it: Jack White: ‘Acoustic Recordings 19982016’. Jack White has been moving in so many directions since the demise of The White Stripes that it’s been hard to keep up. There’s his work with The Raconteurs, his production for a bunch of people, his weird retro record label that continues to produce the most eccentric vinyl releases on the planet, and his solo albums; the latest revelling in two distinctly different backing bands, an experiment he has repeated on the road.

But now he pauses to look back, assembling tracks right from The White Stripes’ first album through to his latest.

They are sort of acoustic. Well, the early ones. The later ones I guess include acoustic instruments and are generally so much fun that you can forgive stretched definitions.

There are a few remixes and a couple of rarities but essentially this is a straight compilation that highlights Jack White’s grasp of pop song-writing and prodigious imagination. It’s a good listen.

Anthony gets serious

Local singer-songwriter Anthony Coulter has launched his latest single and music video ‘Sands of Time’. The fireworks are scheduled to rocket off at 8.30pm for about 20 minutes.

Entry costs $6 for adults, $4 for children aged five to 12, under-fives are free and tickets can be purchased at the gate.
