TePukeHighSchool’sClass of2025wascelebratedina spectacularseniorprizegiving ceremony,markingthe culminationofstudents’fiveyearjourneyattheschool.
Theevent,heldatTheOrchard Church,wasavibrantshowcaseof academicexcellence,community service,andoutstandingtalent.
Theeveningwasexpertlyguidedby thehighschool’sheadstudentsBella NgawhikaandHarrisonMatthews, whoservedasthenight’sMCs.
Theceremonybeganwith serviceawardshonouringstudent contributions,followedby academicandhighacademicawards forYears11-13.
Thewinnerofthehousecupwas announced,followedbythehighly anticipatedintroductionofthe studentleadersfor2026,whichwill beEmilySmithandHamishPaget. Afterarangeofspecialawards recogniseduniquetalents,the eveningmovedtoitspinnacle,the premierawards.
Theevening’sannouncements wereinterspersedwithaseriesof brilliantperformanceswiththe audiencetreatedtothestunning vocalsofAnikaHungerford,backed bythesoaringharmoniesofthe VocaliseChoir.
Culturalflair
Therewasalsoaheartfeltand emotionalperformancefromKay McGeeandIsaiahMcLachlanLowes,sharingtheirwinningTalent ShowactTV,andavibrantKiribati
dancethatbroughtarichculturalflairto thecelebration.Asalways,thepowerful soundofthekapahakagroup’shaka resonatedthroughthevenue,honouringthe students’achievements.
Amongthecelebration,aspecial acknowledgementwasmadeforCarol Power,honouringher37yearsofteachingat TePukeHighSchool.
PremierAwards
TheeveningculminatedwiththePremier Awards.Thetophonoursbeganwith thenamingofSamanthaGibbonsasthe ProximeAccessit,acknowledgingher exceptionalacademicrecord.
Thisyear,thehighschoolproudly celebratedtwostudentsforitshighest honour.TheDuxofHumanitieswas awardedtoMollieWiltonforher outstandingachievementsintheartsand socialsciences,andtheDuxofScienceswas awardedtoRileyHortonforhisexceptional masteryofscientificandmathematicalfields.
Scholarships
Thereweresomesignificantscholarships provided,andundoubtedly,theywillbelifechangingfortherecipients.Intotal,more than$330,000wassharedamongsenior studentsonthenight.
Thiswasanincredibledisplayofgenerosity
AKiribatidancewasperformedby
andsupportfromthecommunityforour studentsandtheworkundertakenbytheir teacherstohelpthenextgenerationrealise theirpotential.Aremarkableportionof thiswasawardedtoheadstudentBella Ngawhika,whowassuccessfulingaining $100,000worthofscholarshipsforher futurestudies. Itwasaneveningofimmensepride, heartfeltfarewells,andincrediblegenerosity. TePukeHighSchoolcongratulatesall itsprizewinnersandwishestheentire graduatingclassof2025theverybestasthey stepboldlyintotheirfutures.

Communitygardencelebratesdecadeofpropagation
TePuke’sCommunityGardenhas beenhelpingfeedthecommunity foradecade.
Thegarden,attheJocelynStendof StockRd,behindTePukeNewWorld, isamodelofitstypeandthroughoutthe yearshadprovidedhundredsoftonnesof freshproducetothecommunity.
Tomorrow,November15,thegarden willcelebrateits10thbirthdaywitha highteaatthegarden.
JennyUttingwasadrivingforcebehind thecreationofthegardenandwas involvedupuntil2020.
“Itstartedoffasagroupfrom[TePuke] Baptistchurch,”shesaid.
“Becauseofthedownturnofthe economyatthatstage,wethought: ‘There’sgoingtobealotofpeople needingfoodanditwouldbeagoodidea tohelppeoplestarttheirowngardens’.”
Whilesettingupvegetablepatchesin gardenshadsomesuccess,thegroup decidedtodothegrowingthemselves andfoundsomeavailablelandon RangiuruRd.
“Wehadalotofgroundthereandwe grewbigcropslikepumpkins,potatoes, kumaraandsweetcornthatwasjust distributedaroundtoneedyfamilies,” Uttingsaid.
Morecentralsite
ByNovember2013itwasaclearthat, whilethegrowinginRangiuruRdwas successful,itwastoofaroutoftowntobe convenientandthegroupstartedtolook foramorecentrallocation.
WesternBayofPlentyDistrictCouncil identifiedanumberofpossiblesitesand thecurrentsitewasthoughttobethebest whileothersitesweretoofarfromtown ortooshady.
Uttingdidalotofbackgroundwork
visitingothercommunitygardensto gatherideas.
AtapublicmeetinginAugust2014the communitygardenwasformallylaunched.
Thegardenhadseveralstatedaims:grow freshfoodfortheTePukefoodbank, providetrainingaboutgardeningforlocal families,studentstheunemployedand youthandprovidefoodfortheneedy.
“AttheinauguralmeetinginAugust 2014,JulieGrayputupherhandtodrive thenewventure,”Uttingsaid.
Firstsod
ThefirstsodwasturnedinOctober 2014andataworkingbeethefirst 400mmraisedbedswerebuilt.Timber wasdonatedbyTrevelyan’sandTePuke Bunningsforthatandcompostbins.
AdlinedonatedtopsoilandWendyand ClintEllisdonatedtheshippingcontainer thatisstillusedforstorageandanoffice. ByFebruary2015anditsofficial openingevent,thecommunitygarden hadalreadymadesignificantdonationsof freshproducetoTePukefoodbank.Food hadalsosincegonetoTheDailyCafé whichisrunasasocialenterprise.
Agardenforthebiggercrops,similar tothosegrownatRangiuruRd,was cultivatedatVincentHouseonNo3Rd.
Volunteers
Sinceitsopeningvolunteershavecome andgoneandhelpedmaintainand expandthegrowingareasandartworks, anirrigationsystemandastallforexcess vegetablesthatcanbetakenatnocharge haveallbeenadded.
Fundraisinghadalwaysbeenrequired andamongtheinitiativeshavebeengalas andsellingseedlingsandproduceatTe PukeCommunityMarket. Grey,whosteppedawayearlier thisyear,hadalsoruncooking
demonstrationsatthegardenandatthe communitymarket.
Whileshesaidtheyweren’taswell receivedasshehadhoped,theywere stillamongthehighlightsofhertimeas chairwoman.
“ButitwassomethingIwaspassionate about–Iwaspassionateaboutcookingas muchasIwaspassionateaboutgrowing thevegetables.
“ThatandjustthesheerfactthatI couldtakedownboxesofnicelygrown producetothefoodbank–itwassuchan achievement.”
Shesaidshewasalsopleaseditcouldall bedoneinthecommunitywithoutthe needforfencesandpadlocks.
Itwasn’talwaysplainsailingandthere hadbeenconstantappealsforvolunteers tohelp;andattimestherewasfrustration withplantsbeingtakenbeforetheywere
readyforharvest.
Possiblytheworstcasewastheremoval of200newlyplantedlettuceseedlingsin September2018.
Covidlockdownsdidn’tstopthings, althoughsocialdistancingmeantmost oftheworkduringthattimefellto Utting,butshewasabletoprovidefresh vegetablesforthosedistributingfood throughthecommunity.
Thefuture
AngelaLeightookoveraschairwoman whenUttingsteppeddown.Shesaid thegardenwasinagreatlocationand it’sgoodtoseepeoplestilltakingexcess producewhenitisplacedonthestall.
Shesaidthereareplansformore workshopstoguidepeoplewantingto growtheirownproduce.
Thebirthdayhighteawillrunfrom 10amtonoon.

‘TheBigBoil-Up’hasbeenincludedinthe StorylinesNotableBookAwardslistofthe bestpicturebookswhileitsTeReoMāori translation‘TeKaiKōhuaNui’isonthe TeReoMāorilist.
Itisparticularlyexcitingthatbothversions areincludedinthelists,Belchersaid. “Everythingelsehasbeentereo,whichis great,butIfeelthatwhenit’satereoversion that’swonanawardthentheawardshould gotothetranslator.”
Belchersaiditwasspecialtoberecognised amongthe“verygoodwritersandwellknownnames”thatareonthelist.

Four-year-oldBlaydeArnoldfromTePuke hasahugeentourageofspecialists,endless medicalappointmentsandphysical therapytreatments.
It’salltomakehislifethebestitcanpossiblybe.
Blayde’sparentsMarissaMasonandScottArnold saidtheirsonwasbornwithEmanuelSyndrome, anextremelyrarechromosomaldisorder.Itdisrupts normaldevelopmentandaffectsmanypartsofthe body.InfantswithEmanuelSyndromehaveweak muscletone,areslowtogainweightandtheir developmentissignificantlydelayed.
MarissasaidinBlayde’scaseithadaffectedorgan development,muscletone,sightandhearing.
Testsduringpregnancyhighlightedapossible issue,butahistoryofmiscarriagesmeantMarissa wasreluctanttoundergoamniocentesis.
Wedidn’tknow
“Wethoughtmaybehe’dbeabitquirky.Wedid aDownSyndrometestandhedidn’thaveDown Syndromeandwethought:‘Maybeitwillwork out’butweshouldhavebeenwonderingwhatit was.Whenhewasborn,wedidn’tknowstraight away,”shesaid.
BlaydewasborninWaikatoHospitalwherehe stayedfortwoweeks,butfivedaysafterhecame home,hisairwaycollapsed.
“Hewasresuscitatedbyhisfather–thenthere wasalengthystayinhospitalbeforewecouldget hisairwaytostopcollapsingallthetimebecauseof hislowmuscletone.
Hisairwaystabilisedas hegainedstrength,andhe returnedhome,Marissasaid.
“Hewaslikeanoodleinthe beginning–that’stheonlyway Icandescribeit–hewasjust veryfloppy.Hecouldn’thold hisheadup–he’sstillgotabit ofatilt.”
Everythingchanged
Needlesstosay,virtually everythinginMarissaand Scott’slifehaschanged.
“BeforeBlayde,thisworld wasforeigntomeandIfelt likeI’dbeenwalkingaround withmyeyesshut,because Ineverknewhowmany syndromeswereoutthere.”
Whenhewasborn,Blayde hadacleftontheinsideofhis mouthwhichmadefeeding verydifficult,Marissasaid.

“Itwasabitofamission,but wegothimeatingandonce thesurgerywasdoneatoneandhalf[yearsold].It wasagame-changer,hecouldeatsomuchbetter.”
Thereis“anamazingteam”atTaurangaHospital
“Ridingfor theDisabledhas beenamazing forhim,that’s helpedhim balance,andall thephysiowork wedo–[the house]waslike aphysiocentre herewithallthe equipment,” Marissasaid.
“Heneverused tobeabletouse hishands,hejust kindofwhacked theminfrontof hisface.Now, he’slearningto grasp.Butany naturalability didn’tcome naturally,we’ve justhadtoteach him.
“He’scomealongwayandheis goingtowalk–itjusttakestimeand lotsandlotsoftherapy.”
Thegoal
Marissasaidthegoalthisyear wastogetBlaydetobeableto standindependently,holdingonto something,aspartofhispreparation forstartingschool.
Heishavingintensivetherapyatthe CentreofMovementrehabilitation centreinRotorua.Thefamilywant himtobeabletogetaroundatschool as“hestillneedstobeakid”.
“He’sstillverywobbly.We’reclose, butheneedsthatintensiveblockof therapyeveryday,whichcomesata pricetagwhichiswhywearedoing thefundraiser.”
ThefundraiserisBlayde’sWorld ontheafternoonofNovember22, worldEmanuelSyndromeDay–at26 McBethDrive.Ticketsare$10each.
Intocommunity
“It’sjusteverydaystepstogethim asableaspossible,that’swhynowwe aretryingtogetintoourcommunity. Forthelastfouryearswe’vejust beenheaddown,tryingtogethim mobileoreatingandwerealisethe communitydoesn’tknowhimand he’sgoingtoschoolandweneedto relyonthemaswell.”

time”,saidMarissa.“There’slotsgoing onandpeoplehavejustbeenamazing, comingtogethertosupportus.It’s quiteoverwhelminghowpeoplehave cometogethertosupportBlayde,we areverylucky.”
Amongtheattractionswillbelive music,morethan20marketstalls, foodtrucks,adancegroupcalled Inclusion,ridesinawagonbehinda teamofClydesdales,adunktank,face painting,spraytattoos,abouncycastle andlotsofrafflesandgiveaways.
“Thedancegroupismadeupof youngadultsandteenswithadditional needsandit’squiteinspirationalwhen youhaveachildlikeBlayde,it’scool towatchandthiscouldbeourfuture oneday.”
Neverstoptrying
Therewillbeprizesforthebest costumesfeaturingpurpleandblue–theEmanuelSyndromecolours. Marissasaidprogresscanbevery slow.“Butweneverstoptrying.We’ve hadtochangeourlivesalot,buthe’s ourkidandwewouldn’thaveitany otherway.”
