Thelong-standingannualeventisaday designedtobringthecommunitytogether withfun,food,andentertainmentforthe wholefamily.

Morethanjustafair,Ocktoberfest createsaspacewherepeoplecanconnect, enjoyaffordableactivities,andcelebrate whatmakesTePukespecial,saidevent organisers.

Anewlookiscomingto TePuke’sTheDailycafé–andit’s allpartofthefuturedirectionofthe trustbehindthesocialenterprise.

Formed10yearsago,thecharitabletrust hasrespondedtothecommunity’sneedsin manywayssincethen.

Bornoutofadesiretoconnectthe communityandsocialservices,thetrust becameanessentialserviceproviding thousandsofmealsduringCovidlockdowns forthosewhowerestruggling.

TheDailyalsobecameaschoollunch provider,buildingacommercialkitchen toprovide2000luncheseverydaytoeight schoolsunderthepreviousgovernment’sKa Ora,KaAkoHealthySchoolLunches.

Ploughingmoneybackintomealsallowed 200extrastudentstohavealuncheveryday, aboveandbeyondthegovernmentcontract.

Changestotheschemeunderthecurrent governmentmeansTheDailyisnow providinglunchestotwoschoolsandonly untiltheendoftheyear.

TrustgeneralmanagerChrissiRobinson saidoneofthelegacieswasthatthetrustnow ownsitscommercialkitchenandhasincreased itsknowledgebase,particularlyofproducing anddeliveringhighquality,deliciousand compliantfoodatscale.

Asurveylastyearfoundthat35%of respondentssometimesrunoutoffood, 6.4%oftenrunout3.2%alwaysrunoffood.

“Webelievethatsolutionshavetoalign

withthecommunityweserve,soournext importantstepwastoaskwhatwouldhelp.”

Robinsonsaidthebeliefwasthata communityowned,sustainablefoodsystem thatstartswithgrowingandgatheringfood locally,atscale,withthecommunityandalarge emphasisonvolunteeringcouldbetheanswer. “Thiswillbeanewareaforustomoveinto, andwearesoexcitedaboutit.”

Whileprocessingfoodwasalreadypart ofthetrust’swork,thenewdirectionwas tolookathowmorecanbedonewiththe community.

“Oneofthecriticalsuccessfactorsfor thisstrategyisretainingourcommunity commercialkitchen,butreducingthe ongoingcosts.”

Tocreateaspacetoworkwiththe communityandreducecosts,thetrustplans tomovethecommercialschoollunches kitchenintothecafé.

Afundraisingcampaignwasrecently launchedtopayfortherequiredalterations tothecafé.

There’salsoanactiveonlineauctionat Galabidandsponsorshipopportunities.

Therewouldalsobeafundraisingevent RollingforGoodonNovember22followed byaneveningoffood,musicandalive auction.“Webelievethatournewstrategyof growingourownfoodandworkingwithour communitythroughvolunteeringwillmake savingsalongtheway,thatwecanthenpass ontoourcommunity,”Robinsonsaid.

“Itisouraspirationindesigningthis strategytocreateasystemthatneedsless externalfunding.”

Partofthestrategywouldbetheofferingof foodwithathree-pointpricesystem-free,at costandatmarketprice.

Tohelpforthosewhoarefoodinsecurethe trustwouldcontinuetoprovidefreefood throughcommunitypartnerslikePoutiri Trust,NgāKākano,TheHubandchurches, Robinsonsaid.

Theprovisionofcheaper,healthyfoodat costwasinresponsetothesurveyfindings andwasseenasawideinterventiontohelp familieskeeptheirheadsabovewater.

Robinsonsaidfoodofferedatmarketprice –throughthecaféandcateringservices,will helpsupporttheoperation,particularlylease andotheroperatingcosts,toensurethatwe asanorganisationishereforthelonghaul.

“Whatweloveaboutthissystem,isthatas alocalcharity,wecanhaveflexibilityinhow wedirectthefood,tomeetcommunityneed andmakesurewearesustainable.”

Acentralelementofthenewlyrefurbished PoutiriWellnessCentrebuildinginTePuke haswonitscreatoraNZMasterJoinersaward.

TePukebusinessArtisanCarpentrywontheBest SpecialityBar,CounterorFitmentawardatthe ceremonyheldrecentlyinRotorua.

ThebusinessisrunbyexpertjoinerCharlesde Lapomarèdeandhispartner,HollyBrawn-Douglas. Theprojectwaspartofanewspaceforacommunity wellnesscentre.

Thescopeoftheworkwastheconception, manufacturing,andinstallationoffloor-to-ceilingslat wallswithimplementeddesignmotifusinginter-spaced blocks,andoversizedplanterboxeswithmatching patternedbattensandblocksononeside.

DeLapomarèdesaidthestartingpointfortheproject wasthedesigner’sconcepttogetherwithlocalartistand PoutiriemployeeKaramHood’srenditionofaMāori pātikipattern(flounderrepresentedusingdiamonds)that wasappliedtotheslatwallsandoversizedplanterboxes.

“Thiswasatechnicallychallengingproject,andweare reallypleasedwiththeendresult,asaretheclients,”de Lapomarèdesaid.

“Wereallyenjoyedbeingapartofthislocalcommunity project,andwe’reverypleasedtocomeawaywithawin forourcontribution.”

Itwasn’tArtisanCarpentry’sfirstMasterJoineraward.

ThecompanyhastwicewontheSupremeAward,the onlyjoinerybusinesstoachievethedoubleandlastyear wontheBestStairsaward.

“Weweredelightedwiththiswin,especially consideringthehighcalibreofentriesthisyear.”

DeLapomarèdestartedArtisanCarpentryin2010out ofapassionforbeautifullymadewoodwork.

Hebelievedagoodcriticalmindandaneyefordetail wereimportantskillstohavewhencreatinghigh-quality furnitureandjoinery.

“Ienjoybeinginvolvedinthewholeprocess,from consultationthroughtoinstallation,”hesaid.

“Itgivesmegreatpleasureto constructpiecesofwoodworkwhichare sustainable,notjustwiththematerials thatareused,butbycarefullycrafting somethingwhichismadetolast.

“AndwhenIseepeopleownapieceof woodworkwhichtheylove,formethis isthegreatestpleasureofall.”

DeLapomarèdehasextensivetraining andexperience.

Hecompletedhisapprenticeshipin FrancethroughtheCompangonsdu Devoir,anassociationofskilledtradesmenwithorigins datingbacktotheMiddleAges.

TePukefirefighterJodiPurdieand hersonCooperaresettoachieve aworldfirstwhentheycompete togetherattheWorldFirefighter ChallengeinTexaslaterthismonth. Thepunishingfirefighterchallengehas beendubbedthehardesttwominutesin sport.WhenJodiandCoopertakeitonin a“tandem”runtheywillbethefirstmother andsontodosoattheworldlevel.“There’s beenfathersandsons,fathersanddaughters, butnomothersandsons,”saidJodi.

TheFirefighterChallengehasfiveelements: climbingasix-storeytowercarryingalength of70mm19kghose;hoistinga70mmhose coil6storeys,choppingusinga4kgshot hammertodriveabeam1.5metres,extending achargedhosetoknockdownadiscand draggingalife-sizeddummyfor30.5m.

Watchingmum

Cooperbeganwatchinghismumcompete inNewZealandeventswhenhewasnineor 10–he’s16now–andsaidalmostfromday onehe’swantedtoemulateher.

Theflameswerefannedtwoyearsagowhen JodicompetedattheworldsinFloridawhere Coopergottopitchin.“Iwashelpingonthe track,doingresets,watchingthebiggunsgo dothebigtimesanditjustmademewantto doitoneday.”

Hegotabrieftryontheworldstagetwo yearsagoasamemberofacadetrelayteam, butwasn’teligibletocompeteonthefull courseuntilhewas16andhadbecomea firerecruit.

Hisfirsttasteofcompetingonthefull course,kittedupandwearingacylinderand breathingapparatus(BA),cameattheUnited FireBrigadesAssociation(UFBA)North

IslandChampionshipinApril.Hecompleted thecourseinabouttwo-and-a-halfminutes.

“Thatwasphenomenal,”saidJodi.“Ididn’t knowifhewouldfinishatall,becauseIknow whatit’sliketoweartheBA.Iwasworriedhe mightnotpacehimself.

“Hemissedoutonachancetoimprovehis timeinMaywhentheNZnationalswere cancelledduetohighwindsbuthasgone fasterinpractice.”

IntheUnitedStates,Cooperwillbe competingintheExplorerdivision.Asentries comein,hecancheckoutothers’timesand histimesinpracticecomparefavourablywith thoseofothershewillbecompetingagainst.

Lion’sDen

Whenhebecamearecruithestarted practisingmore,notjusttocompete,butto bestrongerasafirefighter.Eachcompetition categoryhasathresholdtime–beatthatand yougetmembershipoftheLion’sDen.

“MymaingoalistoachieveLion’sDen which[forme]isunderoneminute40,andto winmaybewouldbegood,”saidCooper.

“Butoneofmygoalsistoalsoshowyoung peoplethroughInstagramthatit’spossible tojoin[thefireservice]youngandbestrong enoughtobeafirefighter.”

Whilethere’sastandardcourselayout,Jodi saidshenoticedtherecanbesmalldifferences betweencompetinginNZandintheUS.“It canbejustthelittlethingsthataredifferent –egtherope’sthickerandthehosedragfelta lotdifferenttoourstoo.”

Withnotowertotrainonlocally,thepair traveltoAucklandandTeAwamutu.“Cooper hasdefinitelyspeduphisstairrunsand[top NZcompetitor]DanBradyhasworked withCooperonhishaul,sooverthelastfew monthshe’srefinedhistechniqueonthat,” saidJodi.

Healsoknowswhattoexpect,havingseen theworldsbefore.Whentheydotheirtandem

run,itwillbeCooperwhodoesthefirstpart ofthecourseandJodithesecond. Cooperisalsoscheduledtocompetein themen’standemcompetitionwithnational championAidanGrant,whofinished10that lastyear’sworldchampionships.

Jodi’sgoals

Jodisaidhergoalsareaboutchallenging herselfratherthanbeatinganyoneelse.

“She’snotfarbehindournationalchampion.” Jodihadbeenavolunteerfirefighter beforeshestartedcompetinginnotonlythe firefighterchallengebutothercompetitions suchasthefirefighterdrivers’challenge.

“I’dalreadyhadalotofimpactfrom [emergency]calls,andIfoundthe [competitions]weregreatwaystobring balancebackdoingsomethingfunthrough thefireservicewiththecamaraderieandthat balancesthetraumaofcalls.”

Asarecruit,Cooperdoesn’tgoon emergencycalls,andJodisaid,asaparent,she wantedCoopertodiscoverthefunsidebefore beingexposedtotheemergencysituations. Thereisa31strongNZteamtravelling

Along-timevolunteerwith GoodNeighbour,Webbleads thecharity’sfruit-pickingteam, harvestingproducethatmight otherwisespoilinbackyardsand helpingitreachlocalfamilies whoneeditmost.

HisjourneywithGood Neighbourbeganin2015, shortlyafterhisretirement

frommorethan40yearsinthe corporateworld.

Notonetositstill,hejokes thathecouldn’tsettlefor “sittingathomewatching CoronationStreeteveryday” andwentlookingforsomething meaningfultodo.

Whatstartedsmallhasnow grownintoathrivingteamof around20volunteersvisiting severalbackyardsandorchards. Together,theyharvestbetween 25-30tonnesoffruiteachyear, includingcitrus,avocados, feijoas,andmore,whichis thendistributedtocharities supportingwhānauthroughout theBOP.

Recently,Webb’steamrescued morethan7500kgofavocados injust10daysafteramajor storm.

Withsuchalargehaul,Good Neighbourwasabletosharethe producewithfoodbanksacross theNorthIsland.

CreatedbytheNewZealandDementiaFoundation, theDementiaSTARs(ShortTrainingsinAwarenessand Responsiveness)freeeducationalresourcekitswere createdtoassistthedementiacareworkforceincluding medical,nursing,supportworkersandeducators.Theeight modulesarebuiltonexpertresearchandsoundeducational principlesandaredesignedtobeeasilyintegratedinto everydaypractice.
