Morethan100yearsold,thecupwas originallypresentedtotheschool’sfirst teacher,VidaBilling,inDecember1920. Theschoolhadopenedin1919with16 pupilsontheroll.
SchoolprincipalHannahMortimore wascontactedearlierthisyearbySheryl Clark,wholivesinAustralia.
“Shesaidshehadbeengoingthrough hergreatauntie’sbelongingsthathad beeninstorage,andshecameacrossa cupthatwaspresentedtohergreatauntie fromstudentsatRangiuruSchool.

Threeweeks aterthecup arrivedfrom Australiaand withaletter explainingthat Billingand
herfamilyfeltagreatconnectionwith Rangiuru.“Theschoolhasveryfew photographsfromitsearlydays,but thereisonehanginginthereception area.

“Wetalkedaboutwhatthecupcouldbe, andwewillthinkofaname foritanditwillbeacup forartsandartawards.”
Mortimoresaidthe artworksthatClarkis goingtosendwillalsobe nicetohavebecause ofVida’sconnectionwith eschool.

Theentry-levelcoursehasbeen designedtobefamily-friendly andtoattractnewcomersto thesport.
Itcontrastssignificantlywith theclub’scourseatMcLaren FallsParkwhichhasalotof elevationchangesand“thereare plentyofplacesdiscscanget lost,”saidcommitteemember JordanKemen.
“Weneededsomethingthat’s user-friendly,accessibleandpretty flatbecauseMcLarenFallsisabit likeclimbingtheMount.”
That’snottosaytherearen’ta fewchallengesintheDonovan Parkcourse.
“Therearesomeplaceswhere it’sprettyopenandsomewhere it’swooded,butthere’splenty offreedomtothrowwithout gettingsmackedaroundbythe environment.”
Designs Kemensaiditwasworthgetting professionalcoursedesigner HaydnShoreinvolvedincreating theDonovanParkcourse.
“Ihadafewdesignsmyself,but whenwegottheprofessionalin,it was,‘howdidwemissthat?’,soit wastotallytherightdecision.
Sofar,onlythefirstphaseofthe projecthadbeencompleted,with permanentteesstilltobeinstalled.
“Thecoursedesignersaidwe coulddothisintwostages–get thebasketsfunctionalthissummer, thenwecandostagetwo,put theteepadsin.Atthemoment we’vegotsomemarkersthere,but eventuallywe’llconcertorpave [thetees]ordosomethingnice.”
Thegoalistotrytoachievethat beforetheendofthesummer, saidKemen.
“Butwe’vegotafunctional courseandcanseepeopleout thereusingit.”
Keenplayers TePuke’sJiangYuhasbeen playingforabouttwoyearsand nowhasacourseonherdoorstep.
Shewasintroducedtodiscgolf byherpartnerTaylorKemen, Jordan’sbrother.
Herfirsttasteofthegamewas atthepop-upcoursessetupby thediscgolfassociationatvarious places,includingDonovanPark.
Shesaidshefindsthesport quiteaddictive.

TheTePukeGardenRamblewilltake placeinNovemberasafundraisingevent forTePukeKiwicoastLions,bringing backapopulareventthatwasorganised byTePukeAnglicanChurchinthe1990s andearly2000s.
Therambleisacelebrationoflocal gardensbutisofferingmorethanasimple “lookaround”.
Theselectionincludesruralandurban, longestablishedandrecentlycreated gardens.
Therewillbeavintagetractordisplay,plants forsale,achancetotryoutyourputtingskills
andademonstrationofposymaking.
Therewillbestalls,rafflesandcoffeetrucks alongtheway.
Thegardenswillallprovideinspiration byhelpingpeoplegettoknowwhatgrows wellinthedistrict,saidLionsclubmember ColleenBardell.
“Eachgardenisdifferentandreflectsthe characterandpassionofitsowners.”

Theyweretakingpart inaneventthatwasthe culminationofaweekof rubbishgatheringaroundthe town–theGreatTePuke TidyUp.
Anafternoonclean-upand pizzapartyhasbeenheldfor anumberofyears,butthis wasthefirsttimeithadbeen extendedouttoaweek-long eventbyorganisersEpic TePuke.
EpicTePuke’sSallyBenning saidshethoughttheafternoon wentreallywell.
“I’venotbeentothelast two,butfrompeoplewho were,therewerequite alotmorepeoplethis yearcollecting,sothat’s encouraging.”
Duringtheweekstafffrom PoutiriWellnessCentreand membersofTePukeScouts andTePukeKiwicoastLions hadtheirowncollections.
“Thefactthatwediditas aweek-longthingandhad groupswhocollectedthings beforeFriday,thatwasagood idea,becausenoteveryone couldmakeitontheFriday,” saidBenning.

TheclubhasrunWednesdayevening children’sathleticsduringthesummer andwasalsotheparentorganisationofTe PukeHarriers,whichrunswintercrosscountryandroad-runningprogrammes.
Volunteers
PresidentPauletteOldemansaidthe mainissuewasalackofvolunteersableto committotheclubinthelongterm.
WithherdaughterTeKohaKeteKawhenaneedingtomoveuptoahigher levelandbeinginvolvedinothersports, Oldemanwasnolongerabletodevotethe timetotheathleticsclub.
Anothercoach,EthnayBarnaby,who
hadhelpedtoruntheclubforaround20 years,hadalsomovedon.
RunningcoachSelwynMawkeshas providedtrainingsixdaysaweek,including therunningsideofweeklyathleticsnights, andwillcontinuecoaching.
“Wedidhavesomereallykeenpeople, buttheproblemis,tomakeitsustainable, they’vegottobethere,notjustforone year,you’vegottohavepeoplewhoare reallydedicatedandhavegotapassionfor athleticstokeepitrollingyearafteryear,” Oldemansaid.
“Wedidtryovertheyearsanddidhave somecoolpeopleputtheirhandup,but tobehonest,weneeded10ormore.”
Theclubwouldneedenoughpeopleto sitonthecommitteeandrunWednesday eveningathletics.
“Onthenight,ifyouneededpeopleto helprunthenight,parentsweregreat, you’djustcallthemupandtheywere there,butusuallytheonesputtingtheir handsuparealreadycommittedtoother clubslikegymnasticsorswimming,soit wasquitehardforthem,”Oldemansaid.
Shesaidafter10yearsattheclub,she’s guttedaboutitfolding.
“Peopledon’trealisewhatitinvolves runningaclubthesedays,whathappens behindthescenes–settinguptheclub, makingsureyou’vegottheprogramme right,thatsortofstuff.
“There’ssomuchworkandtobequite
honest,IthinkalotofclubsinNew Zealandarefindingthesamethingat themoment.”
Complications Anothercomplicationwasthattheclub wasnolongerincorporated,andwhile thatwasn’tarequirement,itwasbeneficial, particularlywhenitcametofunding.
“Becauseitwasjustmerunningit,Ijust founditabitoverwhelmingtodoallthat stuff.Mymainaimwastomakesurethe kidshadaprogrammeanditwasallset upforthem,”Oldemansaid.
Theclubfoldinghadraisedaquestion markovertheHarriersprogramme.
Thecurrentseasonhasjustfinishedbut itisunclearwhatwillhappennextwinter, asitislikelytobetoosmalltogoitalone.
Mawkeswasinstrumentalin resurrectingtheHarriersprogramme about10yearsagoandhadprovided guidanceforTePukeandPāpāmoa youngsterskeenonimprovingtheir running,whetherthatisonthetrack,on theroadorcross-country.
Heintendstocontinuetodothatand willalsobecomepartofastrongcoaching teamatthePāpāmoaAthleticsClub, wherehewilloffermiddle-andlongdistancerunningcoaching.
PāpāmoaAthleticsClubcommittee memberElleReid,whohasalsobeen involvedwithTePukeAthleticsClub, saidthePāpāmoaclubhasnothad middleandlong-distancerunningaspart ofitscoachingprogrammebefore.
Greatopportunities Shesaidthestrengthofthecoaching teamatPāpāmoaacrosstrackandfield meanstherearegreatopportunitiesfor TePukeandPāpāmoayoungstersto achievetheirgoals.
Reidwasinstrumentalingettingthe Pāpāmoaclubbackupandrunning afteraperiodofinactivity,andsaidthat whileshewassadabouttheTePuke clubfolding,therewasnothingtosayit wouldn’tstartupagaininthefuture, “andIhopeitdoes”.
VotenowforRealChange Focus Ourcouncilmustgetbacktobasics.ThefirstjobistoappointanewChief Executivewhowantstoworkcloselywiththecouncilandthecommunity. Wealsoneedastrategicreviewofthecouncil’sroleandpurpose.Wemust involveallofourcommunitiesinthatprocess,notdoitbehindcloseddoors.
Efficiency Wecannotaffordfurtherbigratesincreasessothefullstrategicreviewmust havesavingsatitscore.Ourcouncil’soverheadsarehigherthanothersimilar councilsandwecannolongerafford“BusinessasUsual”.Thiswillrequire anopendiscussionwiththecommunityaboutcouncilservicesandwhereyou wantustofocus.
Openness Thebiggestcomplaintaboutcouncil,afterhighrates,isaperceptionthat counciltalksdowntothepublic.Weneedleaderswhocommunicatethe newsofcouncilwithoutspin--thetoughstuffaswellashappynews.We needamorehumblecouncilwithagenuineopennesstotheideasofothers.
Transparency Wehavemadeprogresswithpublishedworkshopnotesandmoreopen debateatcouncilmeetings.Nextstepsaregenuineengagementwiththe public,including‘nochange’asanoptionduringconsultationexercisesand anenlargedroleforcommunityboards.Residentsshouldnotbesurprisedby thecouncil’sdecision-makingprocess.
