CHTCareHomeschief executiveCarriannHall saidwhenthedecision wasmadetostopthe service,thecommitment tofindinganalternative solutionwasunderpinned byanunderstandingofthe importanceofthisservicefor peoplewhoneedit.
“Weensuredthatanyone whowasusingourservicewaspersonally contacted,andguidancegiventohelp themcreateanappropriateplanto continuereceivingthefoodservicethey require.”
Thenumberofmealsprovidedweekly variedaccordingtothecommunity’s requirements. Thenewservicehasanonlineor telephoneorderingsystem.

TeRangaSchool’spossumandpesthuntwas rebootedlastyearandisonagainthisweekend. Theeventbeganin1998asapigandpossumhunt,but untillastyearhadnotbeenheldsince2019.
Itsresurrectioninvolvedarefocusonconservation, kaitaikitanga(guardianship)andthenativebush–although reducingpestnumbersisstillakeypartofthefundraiser.
“Ithasalwaysbeengroundedinconservation,”said FriendsofTeRangaSchoolmemberEmmaMcGlashan.
“Whenitstartedin1998itwasallaboutprotectingthe landfrompossums,butwearejusttryingtorefocusand focusonthemessagingofwhywearedoingit.”
Lastyear,thereweredisplaysfromarangeof conservation-relatedorganisations,manyofwhichare returningthisweekend.
“Therewillalsobeallthefungamesandracesfrom yearsgonebythateverybodyexpectsaswellashotfood,” McGlashansaid.
Includedinthatwillbethe“killerhill”raceinwhich
childrenwillrunwithrangeofweightedbags,representing thedamageapossumcandothroughbrowsinginonly onenight.
Lastyear’seventwasdescribedina“thankyou”letterto supportersas“trulyremarkable”.
Morethan400peopleattendedandtookpartingames andactivitiesandalsoreceivedvaluableinsightson conservationthroughthediverseinteractivedisplays.
Theimpactofthehuntissignificant,andwaslastyear estimatedtohaveledtothepreservationofmorethan 564,000kgofforestvegetationandprovided228,000kgof C02ebenefits.
Onenewfeatureisachancetohearabouttheschool’s bushclassroomwithatourat9.30am.
Theoutdoorclassroomispartofthebushcorridor betweenŌtānewainukuandKaharoaforests,wherethere aremajorkiwiandkōkakoprojects.
Thehopeisthatthecorridorwillbecomea“highway” fortheendangeredbirdstomovebetweenthetwoforests. Conditionswilldictatewhatpestsarecaught,butthere arehopestherewillbenotjustpossums,butalsopigs, rats,stoats,wallabiesanddeer.
Thegalathatmarkstheendofthethreedaysofhunting willbeonSundayattheschoolfrom9am-noon.
Comvitahasbeenanever-present inPaengaroaforfivedecades.

Whentheyfirstmetitwasan unlikelypairing–Bougenwas25, Stratford65–buttheywerekindred spirits,sharingadeepinterestin health,nutritionandbees.
Bougenhaddiscoveredcleanliving, sustainablelifestyles,transcendental meditationandthegrowingnatural foodmovementwhiletravellinginthe 1970s.
Hewalkedintohisfirsthealthfood storeintheUSin1971andsawajar ofrawhoney.
“Itwasrealhoney.Untouched.That raw,goldengoodness–completely unprocessed.Ithought,‘Thisisthe perfectfood’.”
MovingtoGreatBarrierIsland, BougensoughthelpfromLes Blackwell,theisland’sgo-to,multigenerationbeekeeper,whotaughthim howtore-queenthehives,introduced himtomānukahoneyharvestingand taughthimtouseakauripresstowork thedensehoneyoutofthecomb.
“Overthenextfewyears,Ilearned therhythmsofthehive.Eventually, wegotasmokerandveils–ordered byphone,deliveredbybarge.That’s howremotewewere.”
Duringthosethreeyearsonthe island,beesbecamenotjustafood source,butaphilosophy.
Butitwastheuseofhoney-based producttohealaninfectedwoundon ahorsethatwastoshapehisdestiny.
“Thatblewmymind.Itopenedupa wholenewworld,usinghoneynotjust fornutrition,butforhealing.”
WritingtothePOBoxonthe packaging,hequicklygotareplyfrom Stratford–“DearAlan,youcouldbe ananswertoprayer.Comequickly”.
Stratfordwasaherbalistandlifelong beekeeper.HehadmovedtoPaengaroa toretireandliveonaone-acre(0.4ha) property.

Hehadasmall,yetgrowing followinganddecadesofexperience–hehadbeenkeepingbeesandselling honeysincehewas11,hadbeenone ofthefirstbeekeeperstopollinate kiwifruit,hadoncegrowncomfreyat scaletomakecreamsforHiroshima survivorsinJapan,andhadrecovered fromaseriouspersonalhealthcrisis throughnutritionandapitherapy.
Bougenhadyouthfulenergy,eager curiosity,andagrowingknowledge ofbeesandtogether,theydreamed upavision–acompanyrootedin nature,healingandpurpose.Bougen borrowedasmallamountofmoney fromhisparentsandtogetherwith Stratford,foundedComvita.
Atthe50thanniversarycelebrations, Bougensaidithadbeenan“incredible journeysofar–rich,exciting, challenging,fun,risky,satisfyingand certainlylong”.

BougenrecalledthatlifeatComvitainthe late1970sandearly1980swascolourful, excitingandsometimesjustplaincrazy.
“Peoplehadbeguntojoinourcause.Other hippytypes,acoupleoflocalsandafew graduatesfromthenewlyformedSouth PacificCollegeofNaturopathywhowere keenforopportunitiestoputtheirtraining intoaction.
“Newproductsandnewideaswere flowing.”Asforthefuture,Bougensaidhe envisagedhisgreat-grandchildrenhiking throughvastnativeforestsComvitahas playedapartinestablishing.
“Iseeacontinuationofthesteadily growingdemandforhigh-qualitynatural productswithprovenhealthbenefits.

“I’maChristian,andIbelieve Godgavemethisvision.It’s expensivetoshopforessentials thesedays.Ihavefriendswho knowfamiliesthatwouldreally appreciatesomethingassimpleaspyjamasand socks,”shesaid.
Littlewaspreviouslyafosterparentforarouund fouryearsandwasinvolvedwithFosterChilddren Matterwhilerunningahome-baseddaycare.That passionledtothecreationofherowninitiatiive,All ChildrenMatter.
“There’snothingwrongwithsecond-hand,but there’ssomethingspecialaboutreceivingabrandnewpairofjamies.Ijustthinkfamiliesdeserveto beblessed.”
“Iwantedtoreachmorechildren,somysister r suggestedthenameAllChildrenMatter.Afrienndwho wasasocialworkerusedtoconnect mewithfamiliesinneed.Itstaarted withbackpacksfilledwithdonnated clothes—Ispentalotoftime e washing,sorting,andpackingthhem, thendistributingthemthroughfoster agenciesacrossthecountry,”shesaid. Herlatemother,whopassedaway inNovember,wasanintegralpartof theeffort.
“Mumwouldwashanddrythe clothes—wewereinundatedattimes.Someofthose backpacksevenmadeitoverseas,toplaceslikethe Philippines,Tonga,andSamoa.”
Inadditiontoclothing,Littlehasalsoprovided bedroommakeoversforchildren,supplyingnew bedspreadsandotheressentials.
Now,herfocusisonspreadingwarmthwithnewpyjamas andsocks,whichwillbedistributedthroughhernetworkof contactsandsupportagenciesinTePuke,Paengaroa,and Maketū.
