IntheJanuary-Marchquarter,it served275whānau.
Hub’sCEOScottNicholsonsaid roughsleepershistoricallyaccessedthe service,butmoredual-incomefamilies arereceivingaid.
“About60-80%ofourcohortfitthat description.”
Nicholsonseesagrowingproblem: impoverishedseniorsarelesslikelyto usetheHub’sservices.
TheHubhadfacedclosurein2024, butafterreceivingaservicescontract fromtheWesternBayofPlenty DistrictCouncil,ithasremainedopen, Nicholsonsaid.
Ifithadclosed,peoplewhorelyon TheHub’sserviceswouldneedtotravel toTauranga,puttingmorepressureon providersinthecity,hesaid.
Localsupport Localkiwifruitgrowersand supermarketslikeWoolworthsandNew Worldsupportthefoodservices,with 12,911kgoffooddistributed.
Nicholsonsaidhisteam,including22 volunteers,willsavefooddestinedto
landfillsandwaste,orotherwisewasted.
Hesaidabout40%offoodisin landfillsbeforeitevengetstomarket forsale.
“Wedon’tutilisethefoodintheright way,”hesaid.
Nicholsonsaidthatthisfoodiseither usedforfeedingfarmanimalsormight harmbusinesses’bottomlines.
InApril,TheHubhad300 interactions,withthecentreonly openfor10workingdays,duringthat period,Nicholsonsaid.
Someofthosewillberepeatvisits orthesamepersonaccessingdifferent servicesofferedattheHub,Nicholson said.
IntheJanuaryandMarchquarters, therewere927interactions,according todatafromtheHub.
Foodrescue TheHubrescued11,401kgoffood, stoppingitfromendingupinthese landfills.
Clientscanaccessthefoodservicevia akoha,whereclientspay$20to$40 andendupwithdoubleortriplethe value,Nicholsonsaid.
Whilethefoodpackageslookvery similar,NicholsonsaidTheHub caterstopeoplefromdifferentcultural
backgroundsorwithallergies.
Petsofthoselivingattheedgesarealso lookedafter,asNicholsonandhisteam providepetfood,hesaid.
“Formanypeople,animalsprovide emotionalsupportandsafety,”Nicholson said.
TheHubalsooffersfinancialplanning, clothinginwinter,afreehaircutandan insuranceadvocacyservice.
Julesfindsherjoyinvolunteering “Bexthebarberdoesagreatjob convincingsomeofourmorereluctant roughsleeperstogettheirhairdone.”
Theinsuranceadvocacyservicesurprised Nicholsonthemostwithitseffectiveness, asthe“minefield”ofinsurancecanbe challengingtonavigate.
Nicholsonsaidthehaircutserviceison aWednesday,andtheinsuranceadvocacy takesplaceonaTuesday.

She’dalreadyhadatasteofvolunteeringatPukehina, helpingwithvegesgrownforTheDailycafetousein their schoollunchesandfamilymeals.“It’smyfirst year volunteering,andit’sprettycool.”Julesispart-way throughherDukeofEdinburghSilverawardandstarted volunteeringtoaddtoherservicehours.

foodisgrown,plantingseedsand finishingwithmakingtheirown pizzatoppingsatTheDaily.
“Wehadafantasticday,andthis wasawonderfulopportunityfor COLABtoofferfreeactivitiesfor childrentolearnaboutfoodand growing.About60peopletook partandwehadhalfadozenyoung peoplevolunteering.

“Projectwasdesignedtoprovide anopportunityforentry-level dancerstoexperienceahighqualitydancecompetitionevent togainconfidencetoenterother nationalevents,”saidMartin. “Afull-circlemomentforme thisyearisseeingTePukeHigh Schoolenteringagainforthefirst timeinoveradecade,ledbytheir HeadofDance,JenniferCram, whowasastudentofmineback whenitallbegan.”
Humblebeginnings Whatbeganwithjustnine crewsand70dancersatBaycourt in2010,ProjectHipHophas grownandbecomeamajorevent onthenationaldancecalendar.
In2024thecompetition attracted1004dancersacross 94crews,drawinginmorethan 2400spectators.

CraftingfriendshipandcommunityatTePukeMenzShed Improvingmentalandphysical healthandcreatingasenseof belonging,TePukeMenzShed ismorethanjustaworkshop.It’s thelifeskills,opportunitiesand meaningfulconnectionthatbrings themenbacktotheshed weekafterweek.
TePukeMenzShedisafullyequipped woodworkingworkshopformenover 60toparticipateinprojects,repairing andmakinggoodsforthemselvesandthe widercommunity.Theshedoffersmena welcomingspacetosharetheirskills,have alaugh,andworkonpracticalprojects, bothindividuallyandasagroup.
It’saninitiativethatstartedinAustralia inthe1990sandhadaworldwide community.MenzShedscanbefound allaroundNewZealand,with10sheds throughouttheBayofPlenty.Established in2017,TePukeMenzShedhasmore than35members.
Withafocusonallthingswooden, projectsarewiderangingfromcrafting newitems,torepairingfurnitureand restorationprojects.Timbertoysare thoughtfullycraftedwithcareand donatedtoorganisationssuchasthe SalvationArmywhichgivesthemto familiesinneed.
Creatingbespokeoutcomestosuit
theiruniqueneed,memberswork closelywithschools,daycarecentres, kindergartens,churches,community centres,thegeneralpublic,councils,and environmentalagencies.
Skillsandsolutions CurrentpresidentKevinHeathsaid thatworkingdirectlywiththelocal communitymeansthemencoulduse theirskillstosupportthemwithcustom, hand-craftedsolutions.
“Whethertheyneedrattrapsmadefor pestmanagement,orplayequipmentfor alocalschool,thementakeimmense prideintheirwork.
“Beingapartoftheshedisalotof funanditisgreattoseenewfacesjoin us,especiallywhentheyareyounger thanmostofus.It’sourhopethatthey willcarryonbuildingthefutureinthis specialplace.”
Theshedprovidedatruesense ofpurposeforitsmembers,with thefriendshipsformedsupporting theirmentalandphysicalwellbeing. Addressingmen’shealthissueswasacore objectiveoftheMenzShedmovement, wheretherewereopportunitiesforhealth providerstocomeandkōrerowiththe meninanenvironmentwherethemen feelcomfortable.
“WhenIfirstjoinedtheshed,Idid sobecauseIenjoyworkingwithmy handsandmaking‘stuff’,howeverIhave
sincelearnedthattheshedisnotabout woodwork,itisaboutmaintainingmen’s wellbeingintheirretirementyearsand woodworkingisjustthemechanismby whichwedothat.”
Funding
TECTCommunityTrustgranted morethan$7000totheshedin2024 forreplacementandpurchaseof woodworkingequipment.Thisincludeda newwallsawwhichhasmadeiteasierto takeonlargerprojects.
