Heritagehubshowcasesthe importanceofthefurryfruitinthe region.ThefocusoftheHeritageHub willbetoconcentrateoncelebrating

thekiwifruitstoryandthiswould becomeapermanentfeature.There willbefreeadmissiontoenable everyonetoenjoyTePuke’sheritage

NewwetlandforpopularTePukepark

Anewwetlandisbeing developedinTePuke’s LawrenceOliverParkto improvewaterquality, supportwildlife,reduce floodingandaddtothe park’srecreationaland culturalvalue.

Therestorationprojectwill transform2775m2ofthepark intoatreatmentwetland,with morethan3000nativeplants andthreeopen-waterponds.

OwnedbyWesternBay ofPlentyDistrictCouncil, theareabeingdevelopedsits betweenthedogexercisearea atthesouthernendofthe reserveandtheBMXpump trackinthenorthwestcorner andwaspreviouslyleasedfor livestockgrazing.

Ithasuniqueculturalvalues becauseitisadjacenttothe pāsiteTeAore,whichwasa campforforcesduringbattle atTeTumu.

Returningthisspaceto awetlandisanoutcome ofWesternBayofPlenty DistrictCouncil’sReserve ManagementPlan,whichwas adoptedin2022.

Jointinitiative

Theprojectisajoint initiativewithBayofPlenty RegionalCouncil,which

maintainsManagh’sDrain borderingthereserve,andthe TeAraKahikateaPathway Society,whichpreviously establisheda4kmpublic pathwayintheareathatpasses aroundpartofLawrence OliverPark.Localtangata whenua,too,havecontributed totheestablishmentofthe wetland.

WBOPDCreservesand facilitiesmanagerPeter Watsonsaidthewetland wouldbringenvironmental andcommunitybenefits.

“Wetlandsareimportant forkeepingwaterclean, supportingwildlifeand reducingtheeffectsoffloods anddroughts,”Watsonsaid.

“Theyaredesignedto preventsoil,nutrientsand microbesfromreaching nearbywaterwaysthat flowouttosea.Theyalso helpreducepollutionfrom stormwaterandprovidea placefornativeplantsand birdstogrow.

Education

“Thisprojectwillalso providevaluableopportunities forwetlandeducationand enhancetherecreational andculturalvalueofthe area,creatingaspaceforthe communitytoenjoy.

“It’sgreattoseethisproject

gettingunderway,andwe’re lookingforwardtothe positiveimpactitwillhaveon thereserveandeveryonewho usesit.”

Restoration

BOPRCprincipaladviser JacksonEfford,who oversawtheprojectonthe regionalcouncil’sbehalf, echoedWatson’ssentiment.

“TheKaitunaplainswere historicallyallinwetlands, soit’sgoodtobepartof therestorationprocess. We’veevenhadsomepretty interestingfinds–including oneburiedtreethathasbeen

radiocarbon-datedandfound tobemorethan3900years old,”Effordsaid.

“Treatmentwetlandsare excellentatfilteringsediment andnutrientsfromwaterasit movesthroughthewetland. Oncethewetlandhashad sometimetoestablish,we shouldstartseeingimproved waterqualityentering Managh’sDrain.”

Thiswetlandwasmade possiblethankstofunding supportfromWesternBayof PlentyDistrictCouncil,Bay ofPlentyRegionalCouncil, TECTandFonterra.

Kiwifruitheritagehub progresseswithnewsociety

It’sacaseofsmallsteps, butthecreationofaTe PukeKiwifruitCapitalof theWorldHeritagehubis progressingwell.

Negotiatingtosecureasuitable buildingandtheformationofan incorporatedsocietyarethetwo lateststeps.

Theprojectteamisinearly discussionstoleasethebottom floorofthishistoricTePuke CapitalTheatreinJellicoeStfor developingtheheritagehub Earlierthismonth,an incorporatedsocietywasformed withaconstitution,businessand strategicplans,policiesandjob descriptions,abankaccountand signatories.

“Thisalsomeanswenowhave theabilitytostartapplyingfor grantstoenabletheexhibitions tobedesignedandexecuted toahighstandard,”said spokeswomanSueMatthews.

Kiwifruit

ThemainfocusoftheHeritage Hubwillbetoconcentrate oncelebratingthekiwifruit

storyandthiswouldbecomea permanentfeature.

“Wefeelweneedtostart relativelysmalltoenableusto beopentothepublicassoonas possible.”

Therewillbefreeadmission toenableeveryonetoenjoyTe Puke’sheritagewhileadonation boxwillprovideforthosewho wanttocontributetofurther development.

“Weareinearlydiscussions tolease[partofthecinema] building,andthisbuilding hasoneroomthatwouldbe permanentlydedicatedto theamazinghistoryaround thedevelopmentofkiwifruit industry.

“Oncethisisestablishedthere isadditionalroomwhichwill provideopportunitiestoadd exhibitionsthatcelebrateother amazingdistricthistories,and weplantochangeaspectsof theseexhibitionsonathreemonthlybasis.

“Wehaveidentifiedthethree mostimportantthingsareto leaseabuilding,advertisefora manager,andstartapplyingfor grants–includingforacurator position.”

Matthewssaidmanypeople indicatedtheyhadprecious kiwifruiticonstheywantto donateandtheyneededtoknow theywouldbecorrectlyrecorded, storedandmanaged.

RefreshedPukehinacommunityhalllunveiled

It’sbeenfiveyearsinthemaking–thePukehina communityhascelebratedthelong-awaited reopeningofitsgatheringspace.

TheofficiallaunchofthenewlyupgradedPukehina CommunityHallwasonSaturday,April12,attended bymorethan70residentswhoenjoyedspeeches, afternoonteaandafirstlookattherevampedfacility.

PukehinaRatepayersAssociationchairmanStuart Mallaschrevealedthatbehindthescenes,itcamedown tothewire.

“Gettingtothisstagehasbeenquitedrawnout,”he said.“Weonlyreceivedthepublicusecertificationthe daybeforetheopening.”

Construction

Thehallwasconstructedin1967andhadfalleninto disrepairbytheearly-2000s,withuntreatedtimber leadingtostructuralissuesandalackofup-to-date compliance.Atonepoint,demolishingthebuilding andmergingwiththelocalsurfclubwasproposed,but

residentsralliedtosaveit.Theratepayersassociati tookovertheproject,facingchallengessuchasru steelpoles,rottedtimberandoutdatedfiresafety systems.Thermalimagingrevealedsignificantrep wereneededunderthemezzaninefloorandwork furtherdelayedbyCovid-19.

Budget

Despiteitall,thetruecostoftheproject cameinnearbudget,justathirdofthe $600,000estimate.

“We’vedonewellandweknowwe’vedone well,”saidMallasch.“Peoplewhoattended theopeningwereimpressedwiththenew LEDlighting,freshpaintworkandtwonew heatpumpsthatwereaddedattherequestof hallusers.”

Thefacilityisregularlyusedbysportsclubs forindoorbowls,pilates,badmintonandtable tennis;plusgroupsthatholdpotluckdinners andcraftmarketevents.

JasleenalinkbetweenpoliceandIndiancommunity

Astheonlyfemalepoliceofficerof IndianheritageintheWesternBay ofPlenty,Jasleenisanimportant linkbetweentheforceandthe TePukecommunity.

AfterworkinginTaurangaand Pāpāmoa,Jasleen,whohasaskedforher lastnamenottobeused,hasreturnedto TePukeasapoliceconstable,thetown shewasbroughtupinsinceherfamily arrivedin2010.

FromaSikhfamily,Jasleenwanteda careerthatwassomehowrelatedtolaw andherfatherhadalwayswantedoneof hisdaughterstobeinthepoliceforce.

“Iguessitwassomethinghewanted todobutwasn’tabletowithallhis responsibilities–soIlookedintoitand itseemedlikesomethingIwantedto do,”shesaid.

Workplacevariety

Oneoftheattractionswastheideathat notwodaysofpoliceworkarethesame.

“It’s[also]somethingdifferent.There arenotalotoffemaleIndiansinthe jobandtherearealotofthingsbehind

wentthroughPoliceCollegewhichwasa goodexperience.Itwashardtobeaway fromhome,butIhadthesupportofmy mumanddadandsister.”
