What’s the buzz?

Trudy and her partner Jonty have been beekeeping for about 15 years. They’ve built as many as 90 hives on their property that’s nestled in the Papamoa Hills.

They used to make their own honey and sell it at the Rotorua Night Market every Thursday, along with top quality cheeses and bread.

Trudy would chop the cheese and wrap it in wax paper to sell.

“I found traditionally cheesemakers use wax to store their cheese and age it,” says Trudy.

“So because we had collected years and years of beeswax, I just started dipping the cheese in the wax to lengthen its life.

“It worked a treat but every week when I opened the cheese up, I would throw away all of the wax, handmade by Trudy and her bees. which was phenomenally wasteful. “It’s quite nice when you go to places to sell your product and people are constantly telling you how clever you are and how beautiful your product is.

The then and now of building and renovating

Dream big, but not too big

Hamish’s top tips for the now It was a beautiful 1940s-built home with an equally beautiful view. An oldie, but goodie.

It had creosote boards, with white window frames and a pitch ceiling.

“That’s the house that got away,” says interior designer and landscaper Hamish Dodd.

“It’s the one that you wish you never sold, I loved it.”

It’s the first home he’s ever renovated.

“I poured everything into it that I collected over the years, great fabrics and bits of pieces. Luckily for me, some architectural enthusiasts bought it, so I knew it was in good hands.”

That was about 12 years ago now and things have changed. Prices of materials have skyrocketed, products have evolved and technology has advanced.

“I’ve noticed everything seems to have become more specialised,” says the 39-year-old. “Now you have an insulation company that does the installation, you have a plaster board company that does the lining.

“Everyone’s broken into very compartmental areas, which is good in some ways because they’re fast and efficient and know their job really well. Whereas back in those days the builder did everything.”

Hamish has noticed the changes between renovating his first home to the recent building of his holiday home in Taupo. The one we’ll get to see on the telly.

a quick chat to ask his top tips on renovating and building.

1) Dream big, but not too big Hamish’s three-bedroom bach started out at 180m2, but was scaled back to 149m2 for cost. The land cost about $150,000 and $400,000 for the finished property.

“If we were to go with our original 180m2 design it would have cost us well over $500,000. Straight away we went: ‘Ah, nah!’

2) Get things costed “It’s about picking and choosing where you do and don’t spend your money,” says Hamish. “Sometimes you’ve got to spend a little bit more if it’s a key feature, but you can save in other areas.

“You can wait for small plants to grow outside, but spend more money on your trees for instant impact.”

3) Finding clever uses of material “It’s about choosing materials that go into your home that are going to be durable,” says Hamish.

“I painted all of the walls inside using Resene SpaceCoat. It’s a slightly dearer paint, but it means you can actually scrub the walls to keep them clean.

“I don’t want to be precious about our kids running around. It’s not a mausoleum, it’s a holiday home.”

4) Have the support of your closest friends and family “I don’t think this would have been as easy if I didn’t have my partner, my mother and father and my mates.”

Business by design Housing our creative spirit The stats are in – business is booming in the Bay. Housing sales are up 26 per cent on last year and one only needs to be caught in stand-still traffic on a daily commute to know there’s plenty more people living and working in the region.

But it wasn’t always the case. Go back not even five years and the perception of Tauranga and Mount Maunganui was very different: the newlywed and the nearly dead.

“It was seen as a bit of a sleepy town,” tells Brent Devcich, owner of marketing and graphic design agency Devcich & Co. “Within the last couple of years, there’s been a huge number of people who want to live here – and not because they want to take a step back.

“With the last four hires, we’re got creatives coming from New York, Perth, Melbourne and

Auckland, and every time we put a job out, there has been 70-80 applicants.”

The Mount Maunganui-based business, a mere five minutes from the beach, feels very much removed from the idea of ‘$10 Tauranga’.

Vintage bikes and furniture adorn the room for no other purpose than aesthetics, perfectly balanced by the new-age, up-market setting of the rest of the décor. A space like this wouldn’t look out of place in the big smoke and indicates the changing face of our city.

Now, the independent design company, which has grown at Brent’s hands since 2000, has had its international appeal affirmed by becoming a finalist at the Designers Institute NZ’s Best Design Awards 2015.

“People look at you in a different light because you’re not just good by Tauranga’s standards, you are good by national standards. It certainly helps morale, but it puts the pressure on a bit for next year!”

Handpicked from nearly 1000 entries, the finalists represent the best graphic, interactive, moving images, spatial and product designs for the past year.

Devcich & Co were chosen based on their work with the Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s Portraits of Our Place campaign. It’s the first time they’ve entered.

“And the amazing thing is there is three of us in the finals within 3km of each other,” says Brent, who suggests the lifestyle is conducive to better work output.

Tauranga-born Brent knows first-hand what it’s like to come home for a lifestyle change. He left young to seek an overseas experience and training in Auckland for a few years. But the avid windsurfer and mountain biker found himself heading back to the beach to pursue his passions.

Why the Bay is the Best An initiative of The Designers Institute of New Zealand, the Best Design Awards is the annual showcase of excellence in graphic, spatial, product and interactive design.

However, at that time there was one design agency and no jobs, so the graphic designer ended up doing an apprenticeship as a prepress typographer.

He then spent a few years at Kale Print, working in their art room, before going out on his own. His company has taken on various names and locations during the last 15-or-so years before Devcich & Co was formed in December 2013.

The ‘Co’ stands for ‘colleagues’, as staff are very much viewed as such. Equally, it could be for ‘collaboration’, a key attribute of Brent’s way of operating.

As well as being a jack of all trades himself, from design to copywriting and photography, he surrounds himself with people he and his team can learn from.

“There’s lots of shared knowledge here. That’s the

Woods Creative, on Maunganui Road, is a finalist in Small Brand Identity for its work on Mosaic Church and in Environmental Graphics for work with Steens Honey.

Pacific Ave-based Wave Creative Communications Agency is a finalist in the Self-Promotion category for its Wave Festive Feast Cider and in Business Communication for the Wave Trustpower Annual Report.

Flightless design was named a finalist in application design for its Taku Tamaki Exhibition - Collect And Connect Multi-User Interactive Table.

Te Puna’s Locus Research, based in the Newnham Park Innovation Centre, is a finalist in the Consumer category for The Utility Bike, an electric farm bike, and the Automatic Boat Loader 2500. Their Inverse hair conditioning system has been named as a finalist in Concept/Experimental design category.

Waihi’s Gold Discovery Centre is a finalist in the Exhibition Installations and Temporary Structures, which was designed by Wellington’s Locales.

And finally, Tauranga-founded company Think & Shift, which relocated to Auckland earlier this year, is a finalist in five categories.

The awards are being held on October 9 at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland.

Sadly, business growth means little time for those long lunches off at the beach as planned, but Brent’s finding other outlets for his creativity after hours – motorcycles. His love of the two wheels explains the collection gathering in the office.

“Vintage bikes are the most amazing pieces of design. With this job you can spend so much time in your head, trying to drag things out, so that tactile side, working with machinery, feeds something else.”
