Painted Ukuleles Incubator Creative Hub director Simone Anderson is delighted by the public response to their latest exhibition, with over 80 painted ukuleles set to be on display during February and March at the Historic Village.

“We have a ukulele group that meets every Monday,” says Simone. “I saw this thing on Instagram for these blank ukuleles for sale.

“I went and researched it, and then bought the whole lot in bulk. We put out a registration of interest to the public, because I had to get people to commit before I ordered them. I expected we might get 40 or 50 people interested, but we had to order 85 ukuleles.”

The Incubator Creative Hub team put out the call for registrations of interest in December, allowing two months for the artists to complete their designs.

Each ukulele arrived as a kit, with the body, neck and pegs as separate parts. As part of the terms and

conditions, all of the ukuleles had to be assembled, with particular attention paid to the neck, making sure it was glued well to the body. They then had to be painted or transformed into an art work.

“The artists came and took their ukuleles away,” says Simone. “They’re all coming back to be part of a show called The Art of Ukulele, which opens at The Incubator Gallery on Saturday, February 16.”

The artists returned their ukuleles on February 13 and Simone and her team started installing the exhibition the next day.

Alongside the exhibition, The People’s gallery – Toi ka rere will be showing the Antimatter 2019 exhibition, which opens the same day and runs until March 13. It has been running for the past four years, and attracts imaginative entries made from recycled and upcycled materials, representing an environmental statement.

The exhibition aligns with and celebrates New Zealand’s sustainable backyards month, held every March.

The Bay of Plenty Ukulele Orchestra had its inaugural meeting on September 17, 2018, and has already performed at Christmas at Our Place alongside the Modern Maori Quartet and Ria Hall.

The painted ukulele exhibition will help highlight this group and attract more players.

“We’re also collecting disused and neglected ukuleles that will be much loved for community workshops at The Jam Factory,” says Simone.

“We’d love people to bring them out of their kids’ cupboards and dusty corners and let them see Rosalie Liddle Crawford some action!”

When it comes to the classic Kiwi fish and chip shop by the wharf, it is hard to beat Bobby’s Fresh Fish Market on Dive Crescent.

The Tauranga institution regularly tops the vote as one of the best takeaways in town, and if the online reviews are anything to go by, the food is as good as ever.

A review posted last month by a happy visitor from Billericay in England sums the place up.

“Bobby’s combines a fresh fish shop, next to the fishing quay where the fresh produce is landed.

Superb batter and fluffy chips, all cooked in beef dripping, as they should be, but lies easy on the stomach.

“Fresh fish looks delicious, so fresh in fact that I swear one snapper winked at me.”

Bobby’s is a fresh seafood retail outlet with a wide selection, including mussels, kina, oysters, prawns, seafood kebabs and 10 varieties of fresh fish.

But the biggest attraction on offer is their famous cooked fish and chips.

Customers love being able to order their meals and eat them on the wharf outside in the sea breeze, beside the fishing boat that delivered most of the day’s catch.

It is a magic spot that attracts locals and tourists in large numbers. They must be doing something right to have so many repeat customers.

Rewa Gardiner has been managing the Dive Crescent operation for four years.

She says people like the unique set-up and atmosphere at Bobby’s, and enjoy being able to watch the food being cooked.

“They also like being able to pick their own fish from out of the window,” says Rewa, “so if they don’t want the fish of the day, they can choose tarakihi or snapper or any other fish that they might be interested in.”

Rewa laughs at the suggestion that there maybe some trade secret about how they get their distinctive taste.

“We use really fresh fish and we cook in beef fat instead of oil. It tastes better that way.”

Meeting people from all over the world is a daily part of the job.

“There are heaps of people that come in from the cruise ships and tell us we are one of the best fish and chip shops in New Zealand and they definitely will be coming back,” says Rewa.

Marama Reweti-Martin and her husband Te Pona Martin are regulars at Bobby’s.

“I love the location and the food is fantastic. There is a nice variety of seafood, the fish and chips are awesome and the company is great,” Marama says smiling at Te Pona.

“What’s not to like?

“I have been back in Tauranga for six years after being away for a long time. I am originally from here and when we used to come home for visits we always used to make a visit to Bobby’s.

“It is better than most places I have tried.”

Te Pona also likes the other Bobby’s Fresh Fish Markets in Papamoa and Greerton. It is the consistently high standards that keep him coming back for more.

“The atmosphere on the wharf is so fresh and it reminds me of my hometown of Mangonui, up north,” he says.

John Taikato and his son Des live on Matakana Island. Whenever they get the chance to come over to Tauranga, they like to get a feed at Bobby’s.

“I like coming here and eating the kina and the fish and chips, plus I like all the people who come here and the view,” says Des. “You get to meet some good people.”

John milks 300 dairy cows a day on Matakana Island, so he loves the chance to relax on the wharf and enjoy the whole Bobby’s experience.

“I love every bit of it. There is no time when we come here that I don’t think our Lord Master up there has produced the goods for us.”

Alexandra Claraz, from the French capital of Paris, admits she wasn’t a big fan of New Zealand fish and chips – until she tried a freshly cooked serving at Bobby’s on her first visit to Tauranga.

“Usually, fish and chips here are too greasy for my taste because I am French,” she says. “I don’t usually eat too many fried things, but the food here is very good. You can tell that the fish is fresh and that’s what I wanted to find here.

“I like the fact it is outside the city centre but it is a place where people like to go when they are hungry.”

Vintage Garden Party Celebrating Elva Brain’s gift Tucked away next to the bustle of Cameron Road, a vintage garden party will once again bring elegance from an earlier age to the heart of Tauranga.

Tucked away next to the bustle of Cameron Road, a vintage garden party will once again bring elegance from an earlier age to the heart of Tauranga.

The annual Sunday afternoon garden event, to be held on March 3, is now in its 40th year and will feature fashion, music, stalls and a superb afternoon tea.

In 1979, Elva Brain - the youngest member of her family - died, leaving her home on Cameron Road to the Tauranga Historical Society Incorporated.

Her death ended nearly 100 years of occupancy by just one family.

Elva married William George Watkins when she was 72-years-old and outlived him. She was a keen member of the Tauranga Historical Society Incorporated, and left the house and land to the society in her will. It is now called Brain Watkins House.

Current president of the society, Julie Green, remembers meeting Elva briefly during her final year.

“She was in hospital during her last illness,” says Julie. “I was a student nurse. As this year is the 40th anniversary of Elva leaving us her property, we’ve decided to have a few special, different things at the garden party this year.”

Garments dating from as early as the 1930s, and once belonging to Elva and her sister Bessie, will be on show inside the house, and there will also be about 20 hats

on display, spread through various rooms.

“The reason that we’ve been able to display all these old frocks from Elva and Bessie is because The Elms have very kindly lent us about a dozen mannequins,” says Julie. “Bessie was a milliner, so we’ve got a lot of her hats.

“She died in 1957 as a result of a motor accident.”

To add to the fashion theme, Amy Turner and friends will be modelling some of Amy’s clothing collection, showcasing each decade from the 1940s through to the 1970s.

Dancing demonstrations will also reflect each era.

As I wander into the house to view some of the dresses, I find Shirley Arabin lifting the dustcovers in the bedrooms. A guide at the house for the last 12 years, Shirley trains many of the other guides who volunteer there.

She shows me a photo of Elva Brain being presented with the Captain Millar’s trophy at the Rifle Club in March 1917. The silver tea service that was presented to her as a prize by Sergeant Ernie Pemberton sits on a table nearby.

“She was the rifle champion,” says Shirley.

“It was said that she practised shooting rats here because the town dump used to be at the bottom of Elizabeth Street.

“The section next door, which is now Kale Print, was an orchard that belonged to the Brains.

“The rats came up to eat fruit and she used to pop them off with her gun.”

Shirley takes me through to the front room where the Shaw Savill Cup is on display under glass.

The annual Sunday afternoon garden event is now in its fortieth year and will feature fashion, music, stalls and a superb afternoon tea.

The garden party is the Historical Society’s major fundraiser for the year. People are encouraged to attend in period costume and bring cash, as Eftpos won’t be available.

“It’s dashing attire for the gentlemen and pretty dresses for the women,” says Julie.

Joseph was not only a ship builder, but also a major contractor in the Tauranga district, building bridges, the Strand sea wall, the Durham Street fire station and the first Mount wharf. He was also the major contractor for the Memorial Gates at Tauranga Domain, according to research by Jinty Rorke on the Tauranga Kete website.

“Before the survey in 1851, the land had been part of the Church Missionary Society farm,” writes Jinty.

“Joseph bought the property in the early 1880s. The house was built from a shipment of kauri he received in 1881.”

The first garden party, held in December 1979, featured the Otumoetai College choir, conducted by Bob Addison, a bobbin lacemaking demonstration, a piano accordionist and dancers.

Guests entered into the spirit of the event, coming dressed in top hats, tails and gowns. Duff Maxwell, Julie’s grandfather and owner of the Elms Mission House, was also in attendance.

This year, Marion Arts will be performing with her guitar in the garden.

“People pay a gold coin to come in to the garden, listen to music and see the fashion show,” says Julie.

“They can buy afternoon tea in the hall at the back of the garden.

“There’ll also be raffles, a cake stall, produce, plants, bric-a-brac, a big book stall and three other charities with stalls of their own. It will be $5 to come through the house and see all the displays in there, and children can visit for free.”

Sailing with Dusty Dragons take over Papamoa lake to reply easily.

Across a small Papamoa lake came the “We’ll probably call ourselves the DF65 group. shout: “Go Alinghi!” Next to me on the We’ll have races around the buoys and we’ll probably bank, the return call bellows back: “Traitor!” join up with the Katikati guys and have a race at I’m amongst a group of dragons, now out in force on a Papamoa lake. They are chasing the wind and dodging a few geese, ducks and pukekos.

The dragons are Dragon Force 65 (DF65) radiocontrolled model yachts. Only 650mm in length, hence the ‘65’, they are quickly growing in number amongst a close-knit community of mostly retired people.

Captain and organiser of this informal group is Dusty Waddell, who moved from Rotorua to Tauranga in August 2018 after purchasing a house in Sovereign Drive.

“I came down here with the dog and looked at the pond,” says Dusty. “I’d been sailing at the other pond for about a year with the Townsends and I like this - it’s more open and there’s good access roads to it.”

He is referring to the larger 950mm Townsend yachts being sailed further along the reserve. We have found our way here through Monterey Key, but there are also access ways in from Santa Monica Drive and Santorini Key. The group sailing the Townsends are aptly named the ‘Royal Palms Yacht Club’.

I asked Dusty what he plans to call this group of Dragons, and even though he’s concentrating on sailing two boats at the same time, he still manages

some stage. But at this stage it’s just for fun. We’re not classy people - we don’t need a classy name.”

Out from the bank, he’s laid out two triangular courses, with three buoys marking a course on one side of the small island and three marking a course on the other side. Each course can take up to 25 boats simultaneously. So far, the group numbers about 15 people. They’ve dubbed the island ‘Pukeko Island’. He gestures at the headland at one end.

“That point is called Charles’ Point, because he grounded his boat on it yesterday,” grins Dusty.

Charles Porter is an enthusiastic participant.

Settling in to Papamoa from Auckland, he met Dusty on an early morning walk along the waterways.

“There’s lots of people living around here who need or want something to do,” says Charles, expertly operating his controls. “We’ve got these fantastic facilities, yet here it is, under-utilised.

The club started just after Christmas, and Dusty imported 12 boats for new members to purchase at cost. Each boat has a fully molded ABS hull, 50 micron Mylar racing sails, an extruded carbon fibre mast and booms, extruded alloy keels with zinc alloy ballast, a metal geared digital rudder servo and powerful winch servo, a 2.4 GHZ transmitter and receiver and a display stand.

“They cost me roughly $300,” says Dusty.

“This is a beautiful setting. Look at all those houses, everything is lovely. You couldn’t get anything better could you?

“To build it up takes about four hours.”

The low cost and easy assembly of the smaller, nimble DF65 is why they’re so popular.

Dave Lee goes sailing about five times a week after meeting Dusty at the Townsend pond. He and his partner bought two DF65s, converting their golf trundlers into trailers attached to their bicycles, with one to transport the yachts.

“We’ve made up the other golf trundler to carry our chairs to sit on while we’re sailing the boats,” he says. “My shoulder has packed up, so I had to stop playing golf. We live on the waterways, so it’s a no-brainer really.”

Pam McCormick and neighbor Maureen Tatler both overlook the pond and couldn’t resist joining the group.

“I noticed them as soon as they started here,” says Pam. “I thought it looked exciting and looked like fun.”

“I saw them sailing the big boats up there”, says Maureen, pointing towards the Townsend end. “Then I saw them out here. I talked with Dusty and he said he could get me one.

He’s so helpful - he got me a boat, set it up for me and he didn’t charge.”

On sailing days, the group arrives at the pond around 11am, bringing a packed lunch. They sail until around 3pm.

“I met Dusty at Lake Okere,” says Mervyn Armstrong, who along with good mate Peter Meslemaker travels across from Rotorua. “I couldn’t play golf anymore, so I thought ‘what’s the next thing I can do?’ I saw an advertisement in the paper from Dusty, so I bought an IOM, went sailing and started to enjoy that.

“Then Dusty - the traitor - left us and came over here,” he laughs. “Dusty said ‘come over and join in with these little boats’, so that’s what we did and we both enjoy it.

everything is lovely. You couldn’t get anything better could you? It’s very relaxing. What would we be doing if we weren’t over here?”

The friendly banter amongst them includes a mild debate about adding some comforts, like more trees that provide shade but don’t take the wind. There’s already a large Phoenix palm providing plenty of shade.

Dusty still sails with the Townsends, but he’s keen to get the DF65s ‘off the ground’.

“Our aim is to gather a group of like-minded people to enjoy a couple of hours relaxing, sailing and having some friendly racing in our great waterways and ponds,” says Dusty. “No experience is needed, and anyone can learn to sail.”

“You need something to do, something to look forward to and something to love,” says Charles. “Then you’re happy.”

Whare Thompson A master of carving I called in to see the Waitangi Day-themed exhibitions at the Historic Village on 17th Avenue, and while walking back to the car I came across Whare Thompson busy at work in the old fire station building.

A carver, he’s also been carving out a significant national reputation retelling historical stories through his craft.

He was in the middle of working on a swamp kauri log, some six metres in length. He pointed out to me the various features of the carving, which was commissioned for the University of Waikato Tauranga site on Durham Street.

“This speaks about local history,” says Whare.

He told me the story of a group of people who once lived at Te Kaha. Apparently their chief, Apanui Ringamutu, often felt like a miserable failure as his men had been beaten so many times in battles. Depressed, their mana was very low, and they had a low opinion of themselves. During another battle retreat, Apanui called out to the tohunga of the enemy tribe Hikawera, who was watching them.

“Aue! Why am I always such a failure as a warrior chief?” asked Apanui.

“That which you seek,” said the tohunga, “will be found by following the setting sun.”

On returning home to his pa, Apanui thought about what the tohunga had said. Finally, he decided that somewhere in the Western Bay of

Plenty, in Tauranga Moana, there was someone who could give him the power to succeed, and to really become a toa.

Meanwhile in the pa at Matuaiwi in Tauranga Moana, a tohunga called Kinomoerua was in his kumara patch chanting a karakia to protect the crop from the kumara grub.

He owned a pet tui that could talk, and it followed him wherever he went. The tui called out to him.

“Koka ˜! Tahia te marae – Hey Dad, better get the marae ready.”

This was how the tui warned Kinomoerua that visitors were approaching and he needed to get ready to greet them and offer hospitality.

Kinomoerua went back to his Matuaiwi pa and welcomed Apanui.

After speeches, Apanui told Kinomoerua why he had travelled there. Could Kinomoerua tell him how to become a successful toa?

Kinomoerua said nothing, but led his visitor to look out over the harbour towards Rangiwaea and Matakana. As they looked, a bird swooped down out of the sky and dived into the water. It was a kawau, a shag.

Soon the bird reappeared above the water. It opened its mouth and ate the wind. It had failed to catch the fish it had been after. Several times it opened its mouth and achieved nothing.

“See that shag?” asked Kinomoerua. “Don’t you perform like that, Apanui, it gets nothing, and like you, it gets nowhere.”

The pair paddled across the harbour to

“This carving talks about the trials and tribulations that Apanui experienced,” says Whare, “and the wise words from Kinomoerua telling him he needs to look around him for the answer in his environment.”

Maunganui, and beached their canoe alongside Mauao where the rocks guard the entrance to the harbour. They sat on the slope and looked down on the rock called Te Toka a Tirikawa, or North Rock, as it is often called now.

The waves crashed and broke over the rock in succession, over and over again. Each time the rock reappeared as the foaming waves poured off it.

“See that rock?” asked Kinomoerua. “Look on Te Toka a Tirikawa and conduct yourself as it does. Ka ngaro ka ngaro, ka ea ka ea Te Toka a Tirikawa.”

Apanui was greatly encouraged and never forgot the vision of the waves breaking on the rock of Tirikawa. He defeated his enemy Hikawera of Ngati Porou and went on to further victories.

“This carving talks about the trials and tribulations that Apanui experienced,” says Whare, “and the wise words from Kinomoerua telling him he needs to look around him for the answer in his environment.”

Whare points out to me the various designs in his carving. The carving itself is the shape of a Pouwhenua weapon/landmarker. There’s the talking tui, and above it waves crashing on Tirikawa – North Rock. There are wave and koru patterns. As I gaze on the designs I see the story coming to life.

“The university gave me the brief for the carving,” says Whare. “I know the story, but went to Tamati Tata, an elder here, and he filled me in on the deeper meaning behind the story and how Apanui became wiser.

“So the connection between the university and

learning is about coming here to Tauranga Moana to gain knowledge and wisdom.”

Whare likes to work alongside local artists, carvers and weavers, and brings them on board some of his projects. He has had the help from a couple of local artists, Pohe and Rikirau Luttenberger, to complete ‘Te Toka a Tirikawa’.

The carving stood at the entrance to the university, was covered until it was blessed on February 20 by local elders.

Meanwhile, Whare will take a break with his family overseas, before returning to start more carvings, this time for The Elms Te Papa Tauranga, the new Farmer’s building on Elizabeth Street, and Tauranga Marina.
