Kaimai Range Honey Overall Supreme Honey of NZ Jody Mitchell is used to the early Kaimai mornings. She grew up there, and brought her husband home from Cornwall to raise their own family in the hills overlooking the Bay. “I was adamant I was going to have my children here, and that they’d go to Kaimai School like I did,” she says.

She had met Ralph after completing an agriculture exchange to Norway at age 19. They’ve now clocked up 30 years together.

“Ralph was doing the same exchange to NZ,” says Jody. “I was the area supervisor and met him on his first day in the country. I was on stage speaking to 150 youth exchange students.

“He came up, introduced himself, and we’ve been together ever since.”

After spending 9 months milking cows and driving tractors in Canada together, they moved back to Cornwall in England for four years, before returning home to go dairy farming, and eventually establishing Kaimai Range Honey. Starting 13 years ago with 300 hives, they now have a 2000-hive, multi-award-winning family business, landing the NBA Quintessential Honey of NZ award in 2009, and the Overall Supreme Honey of NZ Award for 2017 and 2018.

“We are continuing a family tradition of beekeeping in the Kaimais since the 1920s, with our daughters

Tamara and Zoe actively involved, and now my youngest brother too,” says Jody.

“My grandmother’s brother got tuberculosis when he was ten. He wasn’t allowed to go to school so they bought him a beehive and he went nuts on bees.

“He was one of the earliest beekeepers in the Kaimai Range, and started Te Poi Apiaries. His son, Don Edwards and my dad started beekeeping too.”

Although growing up with bees, as a child Jody hated them.

“I used to have bad reactions – I’d throw up and pass out. I was petrified of them. It sounds ridiculous as now I’m the biggest bee nut there is.”

This passion has resulted in the couple becoming the overall supreme NZ honey winners for the last two years - an outstanding achievement that has largely gone unnoticed.

From small beginnings, the business has flourished, specialising in Manuka and specialty honey production throughout the North Island and providing kiwifruit pollination services locally.

“We won the first and only Quintessential Honey Competition in 2009,” says Jody. “All conferencegoing beekeepers were asked to bring a pot of their best honey then vote on which pot they would like to take home.”

Jody and Ralph have had their honeys place in the top three Overall Honey Award winners every year they have entered since 2009, and have either won or come second in the Commercial Mono Floral Awards.

talked to him, telling him he needed to see his baby daughter grow up and that he wasn’t allowed to leave me. When he woke up he said word for word what I had said to him, and that it felt so peaceful, he had to resist the urge to drift away.”

They were due to sign a 50/50 sharemilking contract the day after the accident, but instead she finished milking the cows in Morrinsville and nursed Ralph before moving back to the Kaimai family farm.

“We saw a log house kit for sale for $24,000 and decided to build a house while Ralph was recuperating.”

Ralph started working for a beekeeper down the road, with Jody deciding it was time she stopped being scared of bees.

“I started going out with him to the bees.

“That’s about 20 years ago, and we’ve had our own company about 13 years now.”

Their daughters Tamara, 23, and Zoe, 19, who was born after the accident, both work in the family business.

Ralph and Jody were the AFB disease coordinators for the Bay of Plenty for several years.

In June 2019, they plan to go to Italy for the Honey Sensory Analysis course as Jody works

In 2018, their Rewarewa honey represented the Bay of Plenty, winning best honey from the nine regions.

The family ended up winning 12 awards in total.

“We specialise in organically-produced raw Manuka honey from Taranaki and the Central Plateau, along with our local specialty honeys from the Kaimai Range and Waikato.”

Their range of honeys includes Waikato Pasture Honey, Manuka, Rewarewa, Tawari, Kaimai Special and Blackberry.

Around Tauranga, they provide their much-needed kiwifruit pollination service only to ‘bee friendly’ orchardists.

“We love our bees, and believe we must look after them properly, so they can look after us all,” says Jody.

While at college Jody wanted to become a commercial sign writer.

“Our plan was to go dairy farming and ultimately own our own farm. When our first child was five months old, Ralph had an accident.

“He got hit by a truck and trailer on the Kaimai Range. He broke his back and neck and pretty well everything except his left arm and leg.”

Jody was thrust into making the decision to turn Ralph’s life support off.

“I said ‘he’s not going to die’. The medical staff planned to jump start him after I turned it off.”

She watched as her husband jumped back into life by himself, without any medical intervention.

“While he was on life support, I held his hand and

towards becoming qualified as a world honey judge. They also want to enter their honey into the 2019 World Beekeeping Conference in Canada.

They sell their premium export honeys to Tauranga’s Farmer’s Market every Saturday, at the same price they get for export.

Barry Muir A life in retail Barry Muir has had recycled rimu from Tauranga’s old police building and hospital maternity ward made into new furniture.

“One lady told me she’d given birth to six children in the maternity ward, and wanted a piece of this furniture,” he say. “Another came in and said ‘I want a certificate to be sure it’s authentic’.

“We were able to do that, as her father was head of police here years ago.

“It’s good for people to know it doesn’t get burned. It’s part of Tauranga.”

Made to measure, there are rimu tables, chairs and a sideboard on display at Barry’s Furniture Gallery at the Mount.

The shop, on Maunganui Road, has an extensive range.

In the bedding department, one corner features a wall display of photographs, capturing some family moments from the past.

Bedding expert Bill Strang has been working for Barry for 30 years and has a photo of his grandfather’s business - Strang’s Furniture Factory - in Invercargill on display.

The factory is no longer there.

There are also photos of Barry’s son in a speedway car, and Bill’s father Archie Strang with George Nepia. Archie and George played in the same All Blacks team - Archie being the first All Blacks captain to win the Bledisloe Cup, in 1931.

Upstairs, Barry has more albums and photos of staff members covering more than 40 years.

When his parents arrived in Tauranga in 1948, they were unable to find a state house, so his father built their home in Greerton.

“I went to the Boys’ College, and for an afterschool and holiday job I worked for Greerton Furnishing,” says Barry. “The original owners were John and George Sherwin and Ray Stratford.

“Just before I was due to go into the fourth form, Ray said to me ‘I want to teach you the retail trade’. I said ‘Ray, I’m not leaving school until I’ve made the first 15. And he said to me ‘Barry, that’s good, but I’ll teach you more than you’ll ever learn at school’. That’s a promise he kept.

“I went to Mr Nicholson, the headmaster, and he told me to take the opportunity. I started at Greerton Furnishing in 1955.

“Ray said to me ‘I want you to remember Aloysius Chumley’s Chipwhistle. That stands for Ask, Choose and Concentrate’. And that’s how I was taught to be a salesman.

“You ask, you choose and you concentrate on what that person may be interested in.

“Ray taught me that when it comes to the closing of the sale, if the customer is looking at a lounge suite, he would say to them ‘would you like it in green?’ and then shut up.

“The next person to talk has got to be the customer. They will say ‘no, I don’t want it in

green’ and then you’re straight in because you know they’re ready to buy.”

Barry won a one-year scholarship to David Jones in Sydney.

“I was what they called a senior executive trainee,” he explains. “I had to wear a suit after 10am. I had a little white tin carnation and we were called the tin gods, because we could sign credits and sign overtime. I trained in all of their different departments.

“I remembered going down to the wharf to the goods inwards area. My boss put some money in my pocket, and told me at lunchtime, when the wharfies come in to the pub, go over and shout them. We get our gear quicker and we get it all in one piece.”

Greerton Furnishing grew, and Barry remembers when it turned over $1 million dollars one year, between April and November.

Eventually it was turning over that amount per month.

“That really started because Tauranga, Oropi and Pyes Pa were being split up into kiwifruit blocks,” he says. “Each block had to have a house built. Originally, about 20 metres of carpet would do an average lounge, three bedrooms and a hallway.

“But the house sizes grew, with the 20m carpet only doing the lounge, dining and family room.

“And there wasn’t one television set, but two per house.”

Furniture fairs, waiting lists for automatic washing machines, the Phillips K9 colour television sets – it was a busy time.

Barry brought back new ideas, such as mobile showrooms, from his annual trips to Australia and America, and introduced them here, extending the reach of the business into the Waikato.

Ray sent him to summer school to learn advertising and marketing. The company continued to grow until there were 110 staff members, including 25 in the sewing room, and by that time turnover was $1 million per month.

After the original owners died, Greerton Furnishing was eventually sold to Smith City Group, then Forlongs, and Barry, Bill Hislop and Eric Upton set up a new business on Newton Street.

Unable to retail from the building due to council restrictions, Furniture Save moved to Maunganui Road, changing its name to Furniture Gallery.

Sean Reed, who has worked at Furniture Gallery for nearly a decade, has travelled with Barry to China on buying trips and works in sales.

“You learn a lot from these guys,” he says.

“Not just the trade, but more about personality and the way to do business. You get a lot of generic salespeople that are only after one thing, but this place is more family-oriented.”

Matuku Moana High Tec Eco living within a nature reserve Matuku Moana Eco-Village is a nature reserve and eco village development planned for Pukehina.

The concept - transforming and repurposing beachside Pukehina farmland into wetlands and reserves alongside sustainable homes - is expected to deliver 350 acres of natural wetlands and 139 energyefficient eco homes to the Bay of Plenty.

So why build a nature reserve within a housing development? “The development will restore historic wetlands in Pukehina,” says Matuku Moana Project Environmental and Cultural Manager, Buddy Mikaere.

“In our proposal, every home will be offset with one hectare of wetlands, which act as a natural filter and help clean run-off water from local properties.”

Wetlands also provide a natural habitat for native flora, fauna and birds. The Bay of Plenty region has lost an estimated 97 per cent of its fresh water wetlands, which is more than the national average of 90 per cent. Some 100 years ago, the Pukehina site was a wetland and flourishing natural habitat for wildlife. The intention is to return the ecological values to the land which have been lost through draining and other farming activities over this time.

It is also intended to restore the original landscape values by way of a significant planting and weed

eradication regime.

“This project is essentially about reinstating the land to its former glory, how nature intended it to be,” says Buddy.

“Matuku Moana is a chance to prototype a world class sustainable model for housing developments; the Bay of Plenty will be able to hero this project as the gold standard for future developments in New Zealand and around the world.”

The 139-home eco village will incorporate the latest green technology. Each home in Matuku Moana will be energy efficient - complete with solar energy, solar hot water and water tanks to recycle grey water.

They will also use the world’s most advanced sewerage recycling and disposal system similar to that recently adopted in both the Rotorua Lakes and Lake Taupo catchments. These standards require a significantly higher standard of wastewater treatment given the need to “clean up” the catchments.

These standards do not apply to this land, however the project wants to adopt them as they sit well with the eco-village concept and sustainability.

Maori heritage and culture will be incorporated into the design elements of the development.

Not only are local Iwi being engaged from the outset, but the concept of Kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the land) will be woven into the fabric of the development with local Iwi set to play a role in the governance of the restored land.

If the project gets council approval, the plan will

be for the wetland to be managed by a trust set up by Property Seven in partnership with Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Tangata Whenua and Fish and Game.

Managed by Fish and Game, under the guidance of the trust, it is intended

that parts of the new wetland areas will be available for use by the public for a wide range of recreational activities.

Born on a boat in the waters of Fiji, he grew up experiencingmany different cultures and ethnicities, absorbing and integrating the music and sounds into his own musical expression and life.

A musician in Auckland for the last decade, he made the move to Tauranga with his wife Ana, who works at Tauranga City Council, and their two youngest children.

“My wife is a Gisborne girl,” he says, “so coming back to this side of the world was important to her.”

Prior to relocating here, Tristan performed at the Paradox Art Festival, The Incubator and a number of cricket fixtures. At a national level, he is involved with Ethno.

“Ethno brings musicians from around the world together,” he says, “and they teach each other songs and music from their own places. Ethno 2019 will be happening in Auckland, from January 18-28.”

Tristan is involved with a few Tauranga bands. He also has some projects still happening in Auckland, and is working with the Jam Factory.

“Auckland is a big magnet for immigrants, who add to the music scene. There’s Persian/middle Eastern music for one. In Tauranga we have a lot of Latin American people.

“Del Pacifico is a Tauranga Latin American band

I play in. It has at least eight members and I play percussion. We have members from Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela, as well as people who grew up in Tauranga, so it’s a real pan-global kind of thing.”

The band has upcoming gigs at the Citizens Club on December 9 and Totara Street on December 29, followed by Opotiki’s Wild Food Festival on January 2.

“It’s quite amazing to see how many people show up to a Latin American gig. There’s a definite hole in the market musically.”

He also plays guitar in band Afrolites.

“It’s a take on Afrobeat, somewhere between Afrobeat and soundtrack music, and a little bit quirky.

“I also play guitar in the Bay Bawlers. We have four or five horns and we play bangers from around the world. Party songs with lots of energy that are lots of fun. We’ve done some great events.”

He’s also helped set up the Bay of Plenty Ukulele Orchestra.

“Next year we’ll be looking at having a West African drumming group. I’m also very excited to sort out an Indian classical singing group. Essentially, I seem to be finding out what’s not occurring already and then starting it.

“The types of music that excite me are about dialogue - the dialogue of different cultures and people moving into a society that is much more global. When I was in Auckland I was in a lot of groups that were sort of jazz/Afrobeats with the Nigerian community,

The first Ethno gathering was organised at the beginning of 2018.

“Ethno started in Sweden,” he says.

“This year was the pilot for NZ and was held on a marae on Waiheke Island. It was amazing. Just beautiful.

“For me, fun is the big guiding force about the projects I’ve been involved in recently. It’s really about trying to draw together disparate elements, ensuring that you can make a community and beautiful music using all of these parts.”

Kicking grass Andrew Dalley Lawn Mower Racer Andrew Dalley has been zooming around on his lawnmower most weekends this year.

“I’ve been racing since February,” says Andrew.

“On the first Sunday of each month, I’ve been going to Cambridge to race. Our local club is based there, on a guy’s farm.”

His local club, the Bay of Plenty Lawn Mower Racing Club, would like to meet on the Tauranga side of the Kaimai Range, but need a place for members to race.

“We’re trying to find a two-acre paddock so we can race here,” he says.

“We want Tauranga people to be able to watch us. We’re always going over to the Waikato to race, but we want to bring it over this side of the hill.

“We need somewhere flat with a bit of grass – we’ll cut it up anyway. In Cambridge, when we’re not racing on the guy’s farm, he puts the cows into it and then brings them out a few days before we race there again.”

Andrew has wanted a racing lawn mower since he was young.

“I grew up around speedway. I moved into Tauranga and I always wanted a racing ride-on.”

He went to Omokoroa to have a look at one and decided to buy his own.

“It’s like a big go-kart. We have safety gear, helmet, gloves, a neck brace and a tether that kills the motor if you fall off.”

A racing lawn mower sits close to the ground,

and unlike a traditional lawn mower, is unable to cut grass.

“We lower them,” he explains. “There is no blade on them. We drop them right down to about two inches off the ground.”

The Bay of Plenty Lawn Mower Racing club has over 20 members who have participated in events in Omokoroa, Cambridge, Taranaki and Te Puke.

Women, and children over the age of 12 are also encouraged to race.

“We did a display at Motumaoho School in Morrinsville last weekend. It was quite a drawcard for the school, and we’ve been invited back to their gala again next year,” says Andrew.

“I got a bit of damage last Sunday out at the Omokoroa School Lawnmower day.

“I was there as Spiderlocks.”

Spiderlocks is Spiderman with dreadlocks attached to the helmet.

“I got too hot so I took it all off. Someone else dressed up as a Muppet.”

The family-oriented club enjoy entertaining the public with their racing.

In his late 40s, when Andrew isn’t racing a lawnmower or having quality family time, he works as a welder fabricator and is building a Class 2 model lawnmower for his son Hayden, who has just had his 21st birthday.

There are various classes of racing lawn mowers.

“We don’t use lifestyle lawn mowers,” says Andrew, who has been around motor sport all his

life. “They are too high and roll too easy. We have racing lawn mowers, which are hotted up.”

The mowers have engines originally manufactured for lawnmowers, and may be internally and externally modified.

Class 1 modified mowers have engines up to 28ci, with a flat head single cylinder. There are limits to the external modification, with owners required to retain a factory intact manifold and a single barrel lawnmower carburettor. A Class 2 modified mower has up to a 32 ci single or twin cylinder and Class 3 has up to and over 32 ci single or twin cylinder.

Tracing back through the history of lawn mower racing, it seems the first recorded lawn mower races took place in 1963, in Twelve Mile, Indiana in America. According to the North-West Lawn Mower racing Association of the USA, qualifying for the first race saw an average speed around the oval track of 9.97mph, with the race itself being won by Phil Eckelbarger of Peru.

New Zealand’s first mower racer event was held in 2003 at Omokoroa No. 1 School as part of their school gala. Since then, the sport and the performance of the mowers has grown every year.

Mower racing events are now held in the Bay of Plenty, Hamilton and Taranaki regions. The New Zealand Lawn Mower Racing Association was formed in 2010 to provide governance for the sport in New Zealand.

Andrew is very happy with the colour that his wife Marie chose for his mower.

“It’s painted the same colour as my car,” he says.

“I told Marie not to get red paint. Any colour except red. I don’t like Holdens and they’re red.

“I’m a Ford boy, so it came back as blue.

“She works on Sunday afternoons, but she likes to come and watch me race when she can.

“I just do it for the fun. Everyone just goes out and has fun.”

Decadent Christmas Rocky Road

Preparation: 15 minutes (plus two hours chilling time). Makes around 12 -15 squares Approximately 500g of Callebaut sugar free dark chocolate – chopped (or use callets) A good pinch of Malden Salt Flakes 2 tsp of ‘Fresh As’ raspberry powder ¾ cup marshmallows (chop in ½ with kitchen scissors) ¼ cup dried cranberries ¼ cup dried strawberries, coarsely chopped ½ cup macadamia nuts 1/3 cup of pistachio nuts 220g of Turkish delight, coarsely chopped with kitchen scissors (get them mixed with nuts from Vetro to add colour and flavour) 1/3 cup of dried whole blueberries, for topping 20g of ‘Fresh As’ dried raspberries, for topping

Grease and line a 20cm square tin.

Put the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water and heat, stirring occasionally until melted (or melt in a microwave in short bursts, stirring between each burst).

Once melted, cool slightly and lightly stir in the raspberry powder and salt flakes Combine the marshmallows, cranberries, strawberries, nuts and Turkish delight in a large bowl, and mix together.

Next, pour in the melted chocolate and mix well to combine, before spooning the mixture into the prepared tin.

Spread evenly, and sprinkle with the raspberries and blueberries to get an even coverage over the top of chocolate mixture.

Refrigerate for two hours or until set, then cut into small squares. This is very rich, so small is better. Remember to keep in the fridge.
