What’s new?

Visitors to the Bay of Plenty Garden and Art Festival in November are in for an exciting and vibrant celebration of art, music and gardens.

From Katikati to Te Puke, the festival celebrates and showcases the passion and talent of gardeners, designers, musicians and artists.

Over four days, trees, flower beds, shrubs and lawns will be viewed, admired and discussed.

More than 70 gardens, and the work of more than 100 artists, will be on display from Thursday November 15 to Sunday November 18.

“The Garden and Art Festival has three main components,” says festival director Marc Anderson.

“There’s the Garden and Art Trail, Bloom in the Bay and The Long Lunch.

“The festival has been going for 21 years. It was started by a group of enthusiastic people who wanted to share inspiring gardens and art around our region with the public. And it’s grown since then.

“It’s important to recognise the work that has been done before us - and it’s definitely building.”

Marc came on board as festival director in February 2017, with Rose Webb joining him as event coordinator around six months ago.

“There’s been great work done by people before us and we’re following that on,” adds Marc, who along with Rose comes from an event management background.

“Together with the Festival Trust Board, we are focussed on continuing the success of this

magnificent event.

“We want to make sure it lasts for another 20 years at least! Meeting the many inspiring and hardworking gardeners and seeing what they do has been fantastic for us, and we realise how many dedicated and creative people there are in this area.

“We just want to help show them off.”

Garden and Art Trail

One and four-day ticket options are on offer, providing the opportunity to organise a packed day or enjoy a leisurely journey around the gardens over four days.

The full trail spans from Katikati to Te Puke, with four general location areas colour-coded green, yellow, red and blue to assist participants with planning their tour around gardens close to each other.

In the blue trail, which extends from Katikati to Bethlehem, some gardens like Lorraine Browne’s Gallery on Mulgan in Katikati will feature a refreshment or coffee stop. Lorraine has a garden studio amongst the camellias and box hedging, and her husband Glenn will be displaying his wood turning.

At Raywyn and Gary Cook’s Rivahaven garden, which sweeps across rolling land down into native forest, Gary will be demonstrating plant music.

On the yellow trail, which covers Matua, Otumoetai and central Tauranga, the range of gardens to be viewed includes beachside, subtropical, woodland, cottage and rose gardens. There’s a waterfall, fire pit, vineyard, outdoor bar, various vegetables, a food forest, rare pre-war motorcycles, gazebos, a wine

deck, potager, dry stone wall, courtyards, Italian and Japanese themes, palms and historically significant buildings – there is so much to see.

The red trail takes the garden enthusiast on a tour of gardens in Greerton, Tauriko, Pyes Pa, Oropi, Ohauiti and Welcome Bay. The green trail delights with sub-tropical gardens at Mount Maunganui, through to coastal gardens in Papamoa, and then captivating lush, formal, informal and country gardens in Te Puke.

There’s redwoods, rare plants, native birds, rosecovered pergolas and large flower beds – and there is even a night garden which the owners may invite visitors to return to later in the day when the sun has set.

All through these four colourway trails, there are over 100 artists displaying their work. Peter Cramond and Wayne Vickers, both in Papamoa, and Lynne Brown in Tauriko are possibly more art than garden, showcasing stunning sculptures and paintings.

Others provide refreshments, cold drinks, coffee, soap workshops, cafés and a hot rod car display.

One garden will even have a string quartet playing.

Bloom in the Bay

Back at Tauranga’s Historic Village, the festival hub known as Bloom in the Bay will be a buzzing exuberance of floral art, cooking, music, speakers, workshops, presentations, exhibitions and bands.

A pop-up vegetable garden from Toi Ohomai will showcase student’s work, local musicians will take to the stage in the village green and displays of sculptures and art will pack out the available

buildings and surrounds at the village. The Kids Zone will also be bursting with fun activities.

The Long Lunch

Hon. Maggie Barry will host The Long Lunch at Mills Reef on Sunday, November 18 on the fourth and final day of the festival, where there will be a guest appearance from Maggie’s good friend Ruud Kleinpaste.

Promising fun banter and humour between them, the pair will bring a wonderful close to the festival, enhanced by the singing talent of Caitriona Fallon.

“The festival is a good opportunity for people to experience really magnificent gardens and creative arts,” says Marc. “For our gardeners and artists, it’s a great opportunity to showcase what they’ve done and to share their work.

“People can drive around with a map and go to the gardens, but we’ve also got a shuttle bus,that must be pre-booked, and will leave the Historic Village at 9.30am and visit a selection of gardens.”

Bloom in the Bay A blooming festival hub At the vibrant heart of the 2018 Garden and Art Festival is ‘Bloom in the Bay’ – an exciting festival hub full of creative talent, food and entertainment.

Debuting this year at Tauranga Historic Village, this mini-festival within a festival is the number one place to meet up with friends before heading off on the Garden and Art Trail. It’s also the place to return to during the trail, and again afterwards, to enjoy the vast selection on offer.

“We decided to give the festival hub a name of its own,” says festival director Marc Anderson.

“For people who don’t have time to go on the Garden and Art Trail, we still want to give them an opportunity to come and experience something to do with the Garden and Art Festival.

“We decided to call it ‘Bloom in the Bay’, as it’s a mini-festival in its own right.”

Open from 9am to 9.30pm every day of the festival, Bloom in the Bay will be bursting with food stalls, a bar, music, the Kids Zone, a speaker and workshop series, concept gardens, an art gallery, sculpture and floral designs.

Adam will be playing on Friday night with his band The Hustle, and bringing to the stage many of the bands and musicians he features through the Bay Originals.

The stage, which will be set up next to the new deck on the Kollective building, overlooks the Village Green, which will have tables, a bar, marquees and plenty of delicious food offerings.

“We want to create an open outdoor atmosphere with music, art, gardens and food that everyone loves,” says Marc Anderson.

“The village already has a great vibe and Bloom in the Bay will add to this, with everyone just having fun amongst the art and creativity.”

“Stephen Wilson - the singing chef - will host a French dining experience for up to ten people.

“Tickets for this will be pre-sold, and the diners can come and enjoy three-course French cuisine with entertaining waiter service while everyone else is walking around them enjoying the atmosphere of the festival.”

The Mills Reef Good George Bar, marquees with sculptures, art, food and displays will provide plenty for music, garden and art lovers to eat, drink and enjoy as they spread out across the Village Green.

“There’s going to be around 20 bands playing at Bloom in the Bay, from about 3pm to 9pm,” says Adam McLean, the festival music liaison.

“It’s mostly original music, but there’s also some cover bands. Mainstream music, some Latin - very nice and chilled.”

“The Incubator have kindly given us their The People’s Gallery in the village,” says Marc.

“Each artist on the trail will have a representation of their work exhibited there.

“Eight artists and sculptors, like Rob McGregor and Dave Roy, will hold their exhibitions at the village,

whereas others like Melody Downie will have one piece at the village and the rest on show in a garden on the trail.”

Floral Art Designer of the Year The Tauranga Floral Art Society will be running the prestigious BOP Area Floral Art Designer of the Year competition in Tauranga Historic Village’s School house.

“There will be about 80 different designs from period pieces through to contemporary work,” says floral artist Francine Thomas.

“Outside the school house will be a working table where the public can watch us design. The ‘Nature into Art’ designs will also be outside.”

Floral designers from the five Bay of Plenty clubs – Rotorua, Opotiki, Whakatane, Te Puke and Tauranga - will be at the festival. The competition will be judged on the Thursday – the first day of the festival – and then open for public viewing.

Speaker and workshop series.

The Village Theatre will hold a series of workshops covering topics like rain gardens, permaculture, gardening at The Elms, cruise ship garden tours, plant music and learning from plants.

Making glass objects and wreaths workshops will feature onsite and speakers include Ruud Kleinpaste, Gary Cook, Dave Roy, Nichola Vague, Jo Tricker, Antoinette Wilson, Bev Corbett, Troy Edgecombe, Rosie Burr, Emma Cole, Leo Murray, Cherryl Browne and Geoff Canham.

Concept Gardens

Six local landscape designers have created fascinating concept gardens around the Historic Village, with designs ranging from a rain garden, Japanese kokedama with a happy hanging tree, edible gardens and a creative performance garden.

Megan Wilson has researched the history of Faulkner House – Okorere - and developed a garden that transports the home back to the beachside setting it once enjoyed.

Copper sculpture and organic materials enhance the creative performance garden created by Isaac Weston and Lara Bui. Coraleigh Parker’s Kokedama Reflection Garden will stun, with a hanging tree taking pride of place outside the Garden and Art Festival office.

Toni McErlane has created an edible garden, and Nichola Vague, inspired by the bush backdrop behind the Historic Village, demonstrates an environmentally-friendly way to take rainwater off a roof into her rain garden.

“The really good thing about these concept gardens is that they’re here to stay, for visitors of the Historic Village to enjoy after the 2018 festival has been wrapped up,” says Marc.

Kids Zone

Plenty of children’s activities will be going on at the Village, including making your own grass heads, flower jewellery, posies and lavender bags to take home. Planting sunflower seeds, rock painting, and enjoying the kid’s café with iced tea, flower ice cubes and rose petal cookies will feature

along with the kids’ garden; as well as chalk art and book readings with Lillybeth Melmoth from Colouring Book City.

“For those who buy a ticket for the trail, they can get into Bloom in the Bay for free,” says Marc.

“Otherwise it’s only $5 for adults, and children go free.”

Omahanui A native plant garden and much more Esme and Mark Dean have been living at Omahanui, their Oropi Village property since 1977, buying it from Mark’s parents and developing it into NZ’s leading native plant wholesaler Naturally Native.

“It was a bare patch when Mark’s parents first came,” says Esme. “For years we were busy with the native plant nursery and didn’t do much with the garden. It’s only recently that we’ve got stuck in and had the time and passion to develop it.”

The property has a number of buildings on it - the main one dating from the 1860s.

“Bob Scott recently published his book ‘Oropi – the 100 years following confiscation of the land’,” says Mark.

“He told us that part of the house is one of the original Fencible Cottages. There were ten of them put up here in 1868, four years after the Battle of Gate Pa.” The Fencibles were the volunteer army unit that the British Army provided.

Retired army servicemen in England, they were given free passage for themselves and their families as well as a piece of land and a cottage.

“The size of the cottage depended on their previous rank in the army,” says Mark.

“They were to live here, work in the community and, at a moment’s notice, protect the settlers.”

The retired servicemen also worked on building the road to Rotorua.

Part of the house is 150 years old, and still has the

original flooring.

Having specialised in native NZ plants since 1979, Mark and Esme are a rich resource of knowledge and technical advice, with around 220 native plants growing on their 1.2 hectare property.

The business operates next door under new management, and specialises in the propagation and production of over 400 different species of NZ native plants.

Of the two other cottages on their property, one dates from 1911 and the other from 1930, but was moved on to the land in the 1940s.

Past the cottages, a gate leads into a productive garden where vegetables grow all year round.

It’s brimming with a salad garden, garlic, brassica, peas, beans, carrots, larkspur and broadbeans.

In its centre is Tu Atu, a kauri tree planted in 1983 once named for its straight tall growth by a visitor who spoke Te Reo. Borage and comfrey, an old copper turned into an incinerator, and nearby, a bumblebee house.

“We were helping with an experiment to help bring bumblebees into kiwifruit orchards,” says Esme.

“The bumblebees go out in the rain, stay out later at night, work hard. Honey bees don’t like the rain.”

Native plants are the main theme of the whole garden, with the extensive range mingling with exotic plants.

“Native plants are the garden’s backbone,” says Esme, “and I’ve put in more flowers and non-native plants in recent years.”

“The garden’s really been my passion since I retired. You end up spending a lot of time in it and you think ‘well, perhaps other people would like to appreciate it too”

Large established trees grow, like the giant rhododendron and kowhai that tuis love.

“I’ve been told the owner who had it before dad put a bulldozer through the rhododendron in the 1950s,” says Mark. “It’s coppiced up since then and is now over 20 metres tall.”

There’s a woodland garden, a cottage garden with orange geums, and an orchard down the hillside where a Buff Orpington duck has been sitting on ten eggs. Four bantams, 14 hens and another three ducks also enjoy life on the property.

A circular garden leads on to what Esme calls a “hot garden” - a sunny spot for brightly-coloured flowers.

A pagoda will drip white wisteria over summer, with glimpses of the cottages and the brick chimney through the trees.

The woodland garden leads on to “Rangi and Papa” - a sculpture by Jo Kemp, sitting atop a totara post at the top of steps. Nearby is a rare plant, Tecomanthe speciosa, which originally came from the Three Kings Islands.

Two tunnel houses provide a working area for Esme to grow her seedlings, tomatoes and winter vegetables. “If you garden with native plants and other places, you get a garden that is unique to New Zealand,” says Mark.

The garden provides a magical place for children to explore and play, with a swing and a sandpit in place since the couple’s children were young.

They’re now enjoyed by their grandchildren.

Some gardens have been colour-themed. There’s pinks, blues and purples, and a salvia garden.

Plenty of pots burst with flowers. There’s a sundial, grapes, box hedging, native clematis, rustically-growing roses and an old water tower dating back about 50 years.

“The garden’s really been my passion since I retired,” says Esme.

“You end up spending a lot of time in it and you think ‘well, perhaps other people would like to appreciate it too’.”

Located 13km up Oropi Road, Omahanui will feature the art work of Suzy Cels during the 2018 Garden and Art Trail.

“I paint one-off paintings,” says Suzy. “My art is also on cushions, cards and other pieces. I love native birds, nature and lots of colour.”

Daily Grind Coffee will be offered to visitors each day until 2pm.

Learning botanical names and information about so many native NZ species from Mark and Esme makes the trip very worthwhile indeed.

Rivahaven Perfume, bird song, and a love shack Perfume and music, energy and colour – it all emanates from Rivahaven, the sweeping gardens created by Gary and Raywyn Cook.

“This is the third time we’ve been in the Garden and Art Trail,” says Raywyn. “Originally this was gorse with big trunks so high that I couldn’t see the guy on the tractor who came to take it out.”

Raywyn has replaced the gorse with many species of trees and shrubs, including a magnolia, willows, and over twenty philadelphus.

“The perfume from the philadelphus is just divine,” says Raywyn. “It absolutely knocks your socks off.”

Some of the camellias also exude perfume.

“You get more in the late afternoon. It’s nice, wafting around the place.”

The large garden features groups of plantings interspersed with cottage and more informal gardens, providing a highly interesting mix of natural and exotic.

The couple share a love of nature, with Raywyn’s more pragmatic approach complemented by Gary’s passion for finding a deeper, more mystical experience with the natural world.

A cluster of ponga trees sits nestled between their own favourite areas.

“The pongas are where the forest starts,” says Gary.

“Over here is Raywyn’s domain.

“My domain is the forest.”

There are tracks through the forest.

“Fairy glades too,” says Gary. “To get there I’d have to drive you down the river.”

Raywyn had 34 truckloads of mulch brought onto the property, and two friends came to help one day a week. She is out gardening for an hour every day, enjoying the stunning view across the rolling hills.

There’s white snowball bushes, camellias, grafted willows, box hedging and, eventually walking up to the point, a carved face sitting near some driftwood giraffes.

Tracks meander down and back up around the wonderfully random box hedging – think golds, bright greens and silver, the sculptural element provided by yukkas, and bright pink carpet roses with red carpet roses behind.

“Because of the size of the garden, you need groups of plants,” says Raywyn.

Music from plants Gary Cook and his peace lily For me, connecting with nature has meant listening to the sound of the sea from a shell held closely up to my ear.

The birdlife at Rivahaven is rich with fantails, kakas, keruru, white eyes, bell birds and tuis.

“We have the song of the bell birds and the tui,” says Gary.

“Every morning we hear the bell birds,” says Raywyn. The couple have redesigned the front of the garden, planning the area using bamboo stakes and a tin of spray paint.

“Everything’s grown.

“Some things didn’t work, so they’ve been replaced.” Near the main house, there is a small rustic cottage.

“The kids put the sign up saying ‘Love Shack’.

“Gary was going to use it for writing, but he never did.

“The kitchen table is much easier,” he says.

There is an energy to this property, with the garden and native forest continually regenerating.

It has never occurred to me to find out if I can also hear sounds from a potato, other vegetables, a flower or a tree. Would my kumara hum for me before I pop it in a pot?

Gary Cook has a special musical connection with plants, and in particular his peace lily. He has developed a way to allow his lily to play music for him.

At home in Aongatete, he explains this further.

“I apply a connection around the roots of a plant or a tree, with another connection on the leaf, and this gives me a circuit,” says Gary. “Then I plug those wires into a midi system which I bought from Italy about five years ago.

“This then converts the little electrical impulses we’re picking up into a musical note. I process these even further by running them through a very simple synthesizer on my computer, giving them a bit of echo and reverb.”

He has travelled all over New Zealand talking about the peace lily, and demonstrating the music flowing from the plant.

“She travels with me of course,” he says, referring to the lily.

“The focussed attention of a group of people will alter the song, as well as touching or not touching a leaf. When people sing to the plant, she will actually change her song.

“The raw data as it comes off the plant is rather beautiful. It’s all over the musical scale, as plants don’t just play music to suit the human ear. They suit themselves, if you’d like to look at it that way.”

The notion that plants will play music for humans has been around for some time. The Music of the Plants research began at Damanhur in Northern Italy in 1976, when resident researchers created an instrument that was able to capture the electromagnetic variations of the surface of plant leaves and roots, and turn them into sounds.

concerts’, in which musicians perform while accompanied by melodies created by trees.

I realise this suggests that trees could be living sentient beings, with an awareness and a consciousness and the ability to learn to control their electrical emissions, so they can modulate the notes as if they are aware of the music they are producing.

“In Europe and parts of the UK, a number of natural healing clinics are connecting a device to a tree or bush growing in their yard or foyer, and then they pipe the music through to all their therapy rooms,” says Gary.

“Because people like relaxing music, they listen to plant music.”

My kumara is still silent, but maybe it’s like a radio and I have to find a way to tune in.

Littlebach Inner harbour beachside living The charm of John and Bridget Little’s beachside garden provides an interesting look at how weather can be a unique element in designing outdoor areas.

In early January 2018, a storm struck the property, located along the Kulim waterfront.

John and Bridget had recently finished building a drystone wall on the seaside boundary.

“It was two years in the making,” says John, “and within two weeks of completing it, the storm struck. Water was up on the property with waves hitting it.

“However, we’d built the wall traditionally. It’s porous, so the water came through. On receding, we found there was no damage, whereas down at the park where there were solid stone walls, water came over the top and pushed them over.”

Their drystone wall – some 34 tonnes of rock, with each stone handpicked from a Katikati quarry – was going nowhere.

John and Bridget completed a course in building drystone walls before constructing their own. Stones were selected to blend in with the stone groynes projecting out from the beach that retain sand and help minimise beach erosion.

The property, bought off the original owners, had a little old 1955 classic beach bach on it.

“Architecturally, I went right through it and gutted it,” says John, who although a retired designer, enjoys landscape work as well as architectural.

Starting from John’s originally-designed gate,

the route through the garden circles the house, from the potager garden, across the croquet lawn, around the front of the house where the drystone wall features, and on to the service area.

This is the first year this garden has been shown in the Garden and Art Festival’s trail.

“One of the reasons I like to go into the festival is that it gives me a reason to get jobs done,” says John.

He has created a sense of arrival, with aerated concrete walls providing privacy. Well-structured and natural-looking, they’re also a support for cuttings from their Ataahua property to grow up.

The gate theme is taken through to the front door, with its round nautical look.

Artist Helen Rejthar’s paintings will be featured during the festival in the sunroom on the northern side of the house.

“She lives across the road, and we’ve admired her art work for a long time,” says John, who has commissioned works from Helen that now take pride of place in the lounge.

Indian shutters, large outdoor pots, a raised potager garden, manuka boxed hedging, a cloche protecting seedlings, steel edging around the lawn, and an outdoor bench and wringer for washing salad vegetables are all fascinating talking points while walking through this garden.

Within the 650 square-metre property are sun traps, and places to pause and enjoy the day whether there is an easterly or westerly sea breeze.

Melody Downie Floral fusion blooms, soaps and candles Melody Downie loves to have her work shown in a relaxed setting.

“My paintings - mainly paint flowers in acrylics with some applied texture - will be on show and for sale at Leonie Marsh’s beautiful garden in Munro Road,” she says.

“There will be a cafe there, and it’s a perfect central spot for people to stop, relax and take it all in before moving on to the next garden.”

Melody has been creating two different styles of work on varying-sized canvases for the Garden and Art Trail. Her craft features delicate flowers with soft effusions of colour, working layer upon layer to get to the true depth of each piece.

Melody grew up in Tauranga, and went on to become a graphic artist and designer after completing an advertising and design diploma.

“My strength was in art, so I have always followed this through my life,” she says. “I went to Sydney and worked in advertising agencies there, then ran an advertising agency in Perth.”

After returning to New Zealand, she and her husband raised a family, and she continued to work from home.

“I set up a ceramic paint-a-plate business from our home in Papamoa,” explains melody. “This worked well with having a young family at the time.

“Then I started to paint in a Kiwiana-style, painting nikau and paua shells three-dimensionally, which sold in Auckland and Tauranga galleries, alongside many commissions. After doing that for a while, I moved on to exploring different painting styles and techniques.

“That’s taken me to do what I love now - and that’s all things ‘flower’. I create abstract and free style realism paintings, with flowers being my main focus.”

Melody is sought after for commission work, and also creates pleasing and sophisticated artwork for interior designers.

Painting from her home studio, her acrylics are elegant and lovely. Be it hydrangeas, dahlias, roses or peonies, all are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

“I love all flowers,” she admits. “Who doesn’t love

what nature provides in a bloom?”

Printing onto fabric has been a recent exploration, with stunning cushions showing off the original paintings hung above them in her studio.

“Because of my graphic design history, I like to explore and see my work in different mediums,” she says.

“I make candles and soaps, with my artwork printed onto their packaging

and labels.”

Working from her Black Fig Studio, the floral-smelling soaps and candles have names like Black Fig Mediterranean, Peony, Vintage Rose, Lychee and Black Tea. They will be on sale in Leonie Marsh’s garden, alongside many large, floral paintings and a selection of mini painted canvases.

Lynne Brown The French connection Capturing changing landscapes through the seasons and light is a finely-honed skill that Lynne Brown brings to her canvases.

She conveys soft hints of trees, distant horizons, wetlands and harbours that inspire those who love a natural environment.

Lynne’s abstract work is popular and sought after

by New Zealand and overseas collectors alike. For the Garden and Art Festival, she is opening her Lakes home as an ‘art stop’ on the garden and art trail.

Her well-lit studio opens further into a gallery space overlooking a lake - a tranquil setting that begins with a walk from a cul-de-sac across a small bridge.

“This year we went to France, and stayed in Uzès,” says Lynne. “It’s about 40 minutes from Avignon.

“I wanted to find a town that wasn’t too big or too small, had plenty of interesting things to do and wasn’t on a train route.

“Not too touristy. It was the perfect place.

“We had eight weeks there, staying in a 300-year-old house. During that time we had friends come and stay for about a week at a time.

“Some rented cars, but the rest of the time we found our way around by bus. It was wonderful.

“Uzès is a duchy, grown from a Roman town, complete with a circular town centre of cobbled narrow streets, housing quaint boutique shops and many cafes and restaurants.

“Most people eat out. The lifestyle is amazing.

“It’s quite an arty town, and during that time of year there’s lots of music and dance festivals.

“There was always something going on.”

Lynne didn’t paint while she was there. Instead she simply soaked everything in and took photos, knowing she was coming back to paint for the festival.

On returning she began to paint, matching French scenes in one painting alongside a New Zealand scene in another of the same size canvas.

The Kiwi and French landscapes hang alongside each other, linked by the same painting proportion.

Interestingly, in both French and NZ themes, dappled light and atmosphere is captured with the muted moods creating a soothing and relaxing experience for the viewer.

“You get lost in the countryside of the painting, and see a hint of the buildings,” says Lynne. “I’ve done some French scenes with doors and windows.

“The people who came to stay with us love those.”

A prolific artist, Lynne sold around 40 paintings last year through interior designers, galleries and a few commissions. Her abstract earthy tones and clean lines continue to delight.

Dave Roy Consistently erratic dabbler Five minutes’ walk from Dave Roy’s Whakamarama studio is a waterfall. Large painted figures peek from behind trees, and sculptures share the surrounds.

“We had a three-month road trip around Europe last year,” explains Dave, “and while I was there I stumbled across a Dutch painter.

“I was really impressed by his work, and thought I’d come back and try and do something in a similar style.”

He steps back from the resulting pieces to reflect on how artists are often influenced by other people’s work.

“This is a particularly murky pond with all the mozzie larvae under the surface,” he says, pointing to a landscape. “This one is more beachy – mudflats – when the tide’s coming in. It’s like down at Waikareao Estuary, and there’s all this stuff lurking in the mud.”

Dave creates contemporary mixed-media work, and is well-known for using bronze, wood and stainless steel in his sculptures.

This newest work based on the paintings he found in the Dutch gallery, however, is unlike anything he’s done before.

“I’ve decided I’m not really a painter,” he says.

“I’m just a consistent, erratic dabbler. I only came to painting fairly recently.

“I’m almost not sculpting now. Although, having said that, I’m working on some commissions at the moment. I’ve sort of been dabbling more and more with painting.

“I think I will probably go back full circle to this sort of stuff. As I say, it’s consistently erratic.”

This consistent erratic dabbling has resulted in a

significant body of work spanning 30 years.

His ever-changing approach to art has been presented through nearly 20 solo exhibitions and countless group shows. He’s also recorded 16 albums.

“I’m not really a performer, I’m a singer-songwriter,” he says. “Some people have journals and I just write songs, not only about my life but what I’m feeling, what I’m observing out there and making political statements – things like that.”

His love of storytelling comes through each art work and each song.

“I just sit here and noodle away, write stuff down, and I’m lucky in that I’ve got a friend with a recording studio.”

Dave will have his work on display at the main festival hub ‘Bloom in the Bay’ at the Tauranga Historic Village.

“What I’m showing at the Garden and Art Festival is just going to be a mish-mash of all sorts of stuff,” he says.

The large painted figures in his drive are coming to the village too, linking and holding hands, bringing their own story to life.

Caitriona Fallon An evolving singer Caitriona Fallon was born to sing.

“But I’m almost afraid to call it jazz,” says the Irish singer when asked about the music she’s written.

“The sounds that I like come from instruments I hear in my head, like muted trumpets and double bass.

“There’s a jazz influence, but it’s changing now. I’m with different musicians, so I’m hearing different sounds.

There’s definitely theatrical vibes there, but more easy, jazzy, bluesy, folky - lots of crossovers.”

Since arriving in Tauranga with husband Marc and their three children, she has put together a band made up of Wayne Melville on bass, Aaron Wright on guitar, Marc on drums and Leon Gray on piano. Her shows for the 2018 National Jazz Festival quickly sold out.

“New Zealanders love their jazz,” says Caitriona. “I’ve been incredibly lucky with where I’ve landed. I was only here a couple of months and Tarnished Frocks and Divas catapulted me out there quickly.”

Last year she stunned Tauranga audiences with her riveting performance in the Tarnished Frocks and Divas’ 2017 show, Zoetica.

At the age of 19, Caitriona had joined Riverdance, becoming the lead vocalist and touring the world with the theatrical show for around four years. She visited New Zealand in 1998.

“I had an ambition to be a singer,” she explains.

“I auditioned and got the job.” Her husband Marc, from Whakatane, was part of the Riverdance production team. Marc and I had been travelling a lot, and he felt it was time to come back home,” she says. “I’d been to Mount Maunganui and loved it.”

Her band in Ireland was called Cookie and

the Vaudevilles.

“We unintentionally fell into the jazz genre. My nickname was Cookie, and Vaudeville came out of that theatrical era that seemed to suit the music we were playing. We wrote and recorded an album called Riches To Rags, and toured that and other songs all over Ireland in music venues and theatres. We also played at a number of jazz festivals including Cork Guinness Jazz Festival and Cheltenham Jazz Festival in the UK. “Then, sadly it ended due to moving to New Zealand.”

Her new band meets at their house every Wednesday.

“I was really lucky to meet a bunch of people who can really play,” she says, “but we get on well too.

“We’re writing and playing. We have a lot of instrumentals going on, so we’re trying to find words to put on top of those. The wine helps to let loose!”

There’s an emotional depth to Caitriona’s singing that stirs most listeners.

“When people ask me what my style is, I don’t really know,” she says. “There’s an underlying sound, but it can cross over from folk into jazz into blues.”

Although she writes her own songs from her own inner emotions, her favourite album is Tom Waites’ Closing Time.

“He has this most gravelly, sometimes out-of-tune voice that’s not always very melodic, but it has depth and feeling. I do one of his songs – a track called Martha.

“When you hear his songs, the melodies are beautiful but he sings them in a completely individual way.

“I seem to be evolving through a transition which is lovely, and I’m really enjoying it.”

The life I choose Adam McLean Adam McLean has been carving out a life of music and performing since the age of 10.

This makes him a perfect liaison for music at the fourday Bloom in the Bay festival which will showcase over 30 musicians and bands, playing predominantly original songs, on the stage at Tauranga Historic Village’s green.

“Creating Bay Originals has been the best thing that’s ever happened,” says Adam when asked about his personal musical journey and growing the community of musicians, “and from that, helping others.

“I wanted to go on this journey and so did others, so I said ‘let’s go on it together’.”

In his view, it is a theory that’s paid off.

The slogan of Bay Originals - a collaboration between local, original musicians - is “Mahi Ngatahi”, which means “working as one”.

“That’s been our motto ever since and it’s been incredible,” says Adam. “You bring people together and all of a sudden you find you grow together.”

This drive to see local musicians support each other comes from deep-rooted values instilled into Adam from a young age. His parents have both been school principals in Tokoroa and Putaruru.

Community-minded, they took on committee and board roles with local rugby and theatre groups, and his father even dressed up as Santa to sing at a local retirement home.

What drives Adam is being a father. Married to Cayley, they have a son – two-year-old Louis – and their next child due is in March.

“The way I do music now is orientated very much around my family,” he says. “The songs I write, the

image I portray, the person I am – a teacher and a family man – is what I’m about. A lot of my songs are inspired by my son and my family.”

Playing drums at the age of 10 in his brother’s band for Rockquest helped to push through an early lack of confidence in performing publicly, and Adam would go on to front regular solo guitar gigs.

Completing degrees in commerce and music, he became a teacher at Otumoetai Primary School, taking his integrative leadership style with him.

“You can’t be selfish about what you want to do,” he says. “Trying to integrate 30 kids all the time as a school teacher, you’re always trying to think of the big picture and not just yourself.”

Adam is leaving full-time teaching to delve further into the music industry. His main priority will be developing Bay Music School, an after-school music programme.

He’ll also teach one day a week, play gigs and develop Bay Originals events.

“The more I build up everyone in that Bay Originals community, the more my own music will get bigger,” he says. “It’s about taking all of these people along with me.”

Full frontal nerdity Ruud Kleinpaste Ruud Kleinpaste is the nature nerd we need wandering through our urban jungle minds.

“This Garden and Art Festival does the right things,” says Ruud, ruminating.

“It takes the science and technology of how to make gardens, grow things and look after nature.

“It combines that with art, in the other hemisphere of our brain that appreciates the beauty and design that nature has been practising for 3.8 billion years on this planet.

“It’s helping people to become nature nerds, with full frontal nature nerdity!”

Ruud is passionate about his interests and hobbies, which are wide-ranging, but mostly centered around nature. Known as The Bug Man, he has famously featured on Maggie’s Garden Show.

“The Bug man is a fraud,” he declares. “I have never studied entomology at university. It’s always been a hobby - and not even my number one hobby.

“My number one hobby, since the age of seven, was bird watching.”

His main area of study was commercial forestry.

“I know how to grow big plants, cut them off at the knees, cut them up into boards and timber and sell them,” he says.

“Studying forestry has given me a background knowledge of plants, animals, insects and how ecology ties them all together.

“Take a tree. It sequesters carbon, which helps with climate change, provides nesting for birds, creates wood we can sustainably use, cools down the atmosphere, creates the water cycles, helps clean water in the soil, gives us oxygen and filters the air.

“There is little in the world that needs conserving. Most of it we have destroyed. Instead of conservation, we should be about restoration, regeneration, rehabilitation and, most importantly, reconciliation. We should be asking nature for forgiveness and putting it right.”

He also sees what he believes is a worrying trend, with gardens becoming increasingly smaller.

“They’re disappearing with infill housing and hideous growth of our population, cities and towns, and buildings in urban landscapes,” says Ruud.

“That will cause an enormous problem, because we are distancing ourselves from what I call the operations manual of planet earth.

“Gardeners tend to be nature-literate, knowing how to compost, how roots work and what filtration is. All that knowledge is getting lost because fewer people are gardening the way it used to be done.

“It’s the Sword of Damocles that’s hanging above our heads, culture and survival.”

Ruud plans to give three talks at Bloom in the Bay: ‘How to murder your plants more slowly’ will look at pests and diseases and what can go wrong.

‘Messages from Below’ focuses on learning lessons from bugs and fungi, while ‘Nature-Time Teaching’ will be aimed specifically at educators, demonstrating how nature can be used to teach numeracy, literacy, art, music, social studies and science.

It promises to be a highly interesting and entertaining series of workshops.

“I love to take myths of plant protection, repellency and that sort of nonsense, and query them with science,” he says.

Francine Thomas Floral art global superstar Francine Thomas’ talent for floral design has taken her around the globe.

“I never imagined that floral art would take me where it has,” says Francine. “I represented New Zealand in Dublin at the World Flower Shower four years ago, and went to Orlando and Virginia last year. In Orlanda I did a show and workshops, and in Virginia I did floral theatre.”

Floral theatre is a large, floral music production.

“This year I did a big show in Boston and workshops in Rhodes Island.”

Prior to leaving New Zealand to travel to each show, she sends a full working plan of her proposed display to the organisers.

“I take paua or pumice with me, and talk about our country,” she explains. “All of my displays overseas feature NZ, and especially the Bay of Plenty.”

She enjoys this role as an international demonstrator, teacher and judge, travelling the world as a ‘floral ambassador’ for New Zealand, and two years ago she won the NZ title for floral art.

She competes most years in the Garden and Art Festival, and around eight years ago created the secret garden for the festival, as well as a large walk-through garden installation.

“I’ve been asked to go to England,” says Francine, “so I’m heading over there in August. It all started with floral art.

“I went to the World Flower Council Summit in Brisbane about eight weeks ago, and represented NZ doing a design on stage with other countries. The audience watches, while you are interviewed.

“I always say how beautiful the Bay of Plenty is.”

Floral theatre can take about two hours, as she brings the stage to life.

“For the World Flower Council, I had 40 minutes, and was one of 26 countries involved.”

Just six weeks ago she was in Canberra competing at the Australia floral art association conference.

She won the championship, beating out Australia’s best floral artists.

She not only won best in the show, but also picked up the public choice award and two other classes.

Francine’s mother, grandmother and aunt were florists, and she managed a flower wholesale firm prior to being talked into joining the Tauranga Floral Art group.

“I’d done a little bit of floristy,” she says, “but floral art is totally different to floristry. I joined the group,

got hooked and then won the Bay of Plenty area design competition.”

She’d won the 2007 Garden and Art Festival competiton having only been a member for a year.

“It meant I got to compete in the

NZ National competition, run by the Floral Art Society of NZ. I got third!”

She completed her floral art and floristry exams, and since then has enjoyed being let loose without any restrictions.

The Long Lunch A celebration, banter, and fine food The queen of garden shows herself, the Hon. Maggie Barry, will be hosting The Long Lunch.

Held on the fourth and final day of the Garden and Art Festival, at Mills Reef Winery, The Long Lunch will be an enjoyable and relaxed afternoon celebration.

Wonderfully gracious, with a finely-tuned sense of humour, Maggie will be joined by her good friend and special guest Ruud Kleinpaste, otherwise known as ‘The Bug Man’.

“I always have a lot of banter with Maggie,” says Ruud. “It’s a lot of good fun.”

Currently National MP for the North Shore and National spokesperson for Seniors, Veterans and Associate Health portfolios, Maggie will bring along a ‘Maggie Barry Hybrid Tea Rose’ - a rose named after her - to give away at the three-course meal.

“We are very excited to welcome Maggie as our host at the Long Lunch,” says festival event coordinator Rose Webb.

“It will be a fun afternoon, celebrating the last day of the Garden and Art Festival, with plenty of delicious food, great company and entertainment.”

Before entering politics, Maggie had a 30-year media career as a news presenter and interviewer in radio, television and print.

She worked in radio in Taupo and Palmerston North before returning home to Wellington and producing a current affairs round-up for Radio New Zealand’s commercial network.

In 1986 she became the youngest host of RNZ’s

Morning Report and the first woman to hold the position, working opposite Geoff Robinson.

After three-and-a-half years in that role, Maggie moved to host ‘Nine to Noon’ on RNZ National.

In 1992 she moved to television, hosting what became ‘Maggie’s Garden Show’ – a role that would last 12 years – a top ten hit with an audience of 600,000 viewers a week. During that time, Maggie also hosted a midevening news show called ‘Primetime’, and read TV One news.

Maggie has written and presented several TV documentaries, including three Heartland specials, and documentaries including ‘The History of the Rose in New Zealand’ and ‘The Kiwi Bach’.

By 1996 she was voted Woman Personality of the Year by The Listener, was a regular in the Most Trusted New Zealanders Annual Survey, opened the Ellerslie Flower Show, had a rose named for her, and established a successful business for 20 years hosting overseas garden tours. She has published several gardening books, and was appointed to the NZ Order of Merit for her services to broadcasting in the 1996 Queen’s Birthday Honours. She was the Minister for Conservation, Seniors, and Arts, Culture and Heritage in the fifth National government.

At the Long Lunch, guests will also be entertained by ex-Riverdance singer Caitriona Fallon.

The event will take place on Sunday, November 18, from 12pm to 3pm at Mills Reef Winery.
