Seeing with the Right Eye The connection between vision, neck pain and balance We think of vision to describe how clearly we see things. The impact of vision on our lives is much more profound than just seeing the world clearly – we need it to thread a needle; identify people moving in crowds; and while driving a car, seeing a child and anticipating that child running onto the street.

To maintain balance and navigate space in our physical world, we must organise and integrate information from the visual, says David Wellington from Greerton Chiropractic.

“This means the proprioceptive – information perceived through our muscles and joints to tell us where we are in space – and vestibular systems – inner ears sensing motion, equilibrium and spatial awareness.

“A deficiency in any of these three vital systems can have a dramatic impact on a person’s ability to exist in their world.”

Vision and the brain

It is generally thought that between half and two-thirds of the brain is used for visual processing, says David.

“When our eyes are open, two-thirds of the electrical activity of the brain is devoted to vision.

“Our vision is such a powerful sense that it can override information from the other senses, which is sometimes beneficial and other times detrimental. When the visual system is not working properly, providing incorrect information to other somatosensory systems, it can dramatically interfere with our quality of life.”

The eyes do a lot. They converge, for example, to thread a needle. They saccade, or move rapidly, to a new target. They are involved in pursuit, such as when we watch a car go past. They have optokinetic reflex – for example, when driving a car and the environment is moving. They also have vestibular ocular reflex – eyes looking straight ahead, head turns, and gaze fixation, when you are staring or reading.

Neck pain and vision

With our daily living activities, we will move our head to something we see in our peripheral vision and the combination of head turn and eye movement must be perfectly co-ordinated, otherwise we may perceive the sensations of dizziness, loss of balance, poor co-ordination and timing.

“From simple activities of turning to talk to someone, to extreme levels such as elite sports people, how precise this critical task is performed will affect you,” says David.

“The suboccipital muscles are extremely accurate motion detectors, they communicate to areas of the cerebellum and vestibular nuclei, injury to the cervical spine and neck pain will affect how your eyes move because of this relationship and may disrupt visual, neck and balance related functions such as reading, walking on uneven ground, running, driving, and dynamic posture, for example bending, lifting, twisting, carrying, and reaching.”

How could you know?

Because eye movements are subtle, fast, and should be precise; head, neck and spinal movement should be pain-free and smooth, accurate and dynamic. Balance should be responsive to changing environments and different settings. But how do you accurately measure these systems?

“X-rays, MRI and CT scans, and blood tests are used to measure various complaints, therefore we also need relevant equipment

to test eye movements and detect a reliance or weakness of the three systems involved – balance, vision and proprioception,” says David.

“Computerised posturography can be used to detect limits of stability related to fall prevention, and the relationship between visual, proprioception and balance. RightEye eye-tracking equipment will detect eye movement patterns related to reading, accurate rapid eye movements, and smooth pursuit.”

Why?

The vital relationship between visual, proprioception and balance can’t be understated, says David.

How these systems interact defines how you get through the day. Understanding that, along with getting the right exercises and treatments, can help you regain functional loss.

“If reading is a difficult task for you or someone you know; if you get eye strain but your eyes are okay; if balance or feeling dizzy sometimes is an issue; if you keep bumping furniture on one side, tripping stumbling or falling, these are all simple signs of a potential breakdown of this system,” says David.

Butter-smooth hydrofoiling Richard Bates, 63 and life I was driving along The Mall in Pilot Bay when I noticed Richard Bates donning his bright orange helmet.

I stopped to say hi, finding him getting ready to head out onto the water.

There was a stiff breeze of about nine knots and the tide was still on its way in.

The 63-year-old has been hydrofoiling for four years and kite boarding for six.

A hydrofoil lifts the board out of the water, decreasing drag and allowing greater speeds.

The helmet is a very important aspect.

“If you need to be rescued, it can be seen easily,” says Richard. “The other thing that’s really important is you’ve got to have lots of warm clothes in case you have a very long swim. So that even after four hours in the water, you’re still nice and toasty warm.”

He was able to get in about 90 minutes of hydrofoiling, but after that the wind will have dropped as the tide went out.

“The last thing I want to do is be rescued with the tide going out,” he says.

“Last year I got stuck on the spit on the end of Matakana with the tide roaring out, just as the wind dropped.

“I always carry a VHF, so I bundled up my kite and rang the Coastguard. They had a new Sealegs Rescue boat, and it just happened to be coming in the harbour entrance.

“They replied that they could see me, so within two minutes of calling up I was on board. They took me to Kulim Park, drove up

the ramp, across the grass, and dropped me right outside my car. That was pretty cool.”

He normally manages to zip across the harbour going into the wind at about 22 knots, and going with the wind between 25 and 32 knots.

“It’s butter-smooth,” he says.

“It’s like water skiing on glass, or snow skiing in the most perfect powder.”

He’s mad keen on racing.

“Nationally, we have probably about four or five events a year,” explains Richard.

“The Nationals this year was at Manly, on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.

“We had a hydrofoil competition in Wanaka in early January with 18 competitors, a Waiheke two-day regatta in April and, on Anniversary Weekend, the Takapuna Boating Club put a two-day regatta on for us.”

Richard says he also goes to a few international events.

“The first one was in Fiji about three years ago,” he says. “Then I did a hydrofoil protour in Mauritius, followed by a pro-tour in Perth about 18 months ago and a pro-tour in Sydney. I also went to one about 18 months ago in La Ventana in Mexico.

“My dad is 90 and he gave up snow skiing about three or four years ago. I’m only 63 and should see at least another 20 years or more.

“Your health is everything, so if you look after your body and eat healthy food then there’s a lot of fun you can have in your retirement.”

The House of Cranks Hope, camaraderie and home Betty Kurzfeld phoned me in May asking for help to get the word out about starting ‘The House of Cranks’.

She and husband Nigel had a house full of hand crank sewing machines, and a desire to make 15 quilts for the children at Homes of Hope Tauranga.

I went back to find out how things were going after our story was published. I was delighted to find a group of passionate people industriously working away on the ‘cranks’.

Betty received many phone calls after the story came out.

“And lots of donations of fabric,” says Betty.

“Batting. Three sewing machines.

“And I’ve met so many lovely people. It’s been absolutely amazing.”

“I saw the story in The Weekend Sun, and rang Betty,” says Chrissy Wilson. “I already knew her but thought ‘I’ve got to go to that’.

“I’ve really enjoyed it. I come twice a week.

“Once I got the record for the day when I made 51 quilt squares! Nobody has made just one quilt alone, we’ve all contributed to all of them. And I’ve made lots of new lovely friends.”

“As soon as I read that article on the Saturday afternoon I rang Betty,” says Margaret Carmichael. “I live in the same street.”

“We got busy and started making quilts for the 15 children at Homes of Hope,” says Betty.

“Thirteen boys and only two girls.

“We made nine quilts, and a wonderful lady, who I only know as Chris from Bethlehem, donated five ready-made quilts. And she gave us a lot of fabric and batting which we’ve used; they’ve gone to a good purpose.”

The group has made denim quilts for the boys.

“I think they’ll end up in the boys’ cars when they’re a bit older because they’re made to last.

“Tauranga Laundry washed all the denim quilts for free to give the seams fluffy edges.”

The group met to sew two to three times a week.

Maureen Fletcher from Maungatapu, and Jocelyn Byrne from Papamoa have also joined the group.

“I said to Betty ‘You’re just what I’ve wanted to do because I love sewing’.

“It’s a lifesaver because I need people and I need to go out and do things,” says Jocelyn.

“We will keep making quilts for more children coming through the Homes of Hope,” says Betty. “Some children will go on, and some may go home, and others will go to their forever homes. I’d like them to all have a quilt of their own. When things go bad there’s nothing like having a quilt to hide under and have a cry.

“I’ve given people a place where they can come and belong. Nobody knows how much fun I get out of it. I’m sitting back here and they’re all just cranking away and the conversation around the table… it’s a fun thing.” Rosalie Liddle Crawford

Gate Pa and Te Ranga – the full story?

Battle of Gate Pa becomes battle of the pen A new book on the Battles of Gate Pa and Te Ranga has been published, challenging previously held views on the historic battles.

The book ‘Gate Pa and Te Ranga - the Full Story’, by authors John McLean of Wellington and John Robinson of Waikanae, is the first book published on the battle of Gate Pa since Gilbert Mair’s 1926 book ‘The Story of Gate Pa’.

The timing of the publication was deliberately planned to pre-empt the book being written by local historians Buddy Mikaere and Cliff Simmons, due for publication in October.

“John McLean decided to get ours out first, give a really clear picture, and challenge them to see what they’re going to say,” says John Robinson. “Their book on Gate Pa has been much trumpeted about and reported on, with newspaper interviews given. We reference them in our book.

“They’re going to say it was a ‘patriots fighting for their

land’ type of story. There is a call going out to have more history taught in schools. We would like to see the full story of our history taught, not a twisted version.

“In New Zealand there’s been so much rubbish written, that you need to free your head from it, and go back to the history as it was reported, and deal with that.

“The whole Battle of Gate Pa was a bloody waste of time.

“It was a terrible waste and there was no need to fight.”

John McLean and John Robinson’s book, 160 pages and illustrated, aims to put the fighting that took place in Tauranga in 1864 into a wider historical context covering the previous 300 years of Maori history and the impact of the British.

“As the battle of Gate Pa was one of the most interesting and important battles, we decided to write about it,” says John McLean.

“I researched the battles at Maketu, Gate Pa and Te Ranga and John Robinson did work on the early tribal alliances that Ngaiterangi had with other tribes in the 1820s.

“At the National Library in Wellington, I went through every copy of The Daily Southern Cross of Auckland. They had a correspondent in Tauranga during these battles who wrote very full and objective reports of the fighting and the conditions. The result is a very interesting read.

“Over the years various myths crop up, and we’ve dealt with five of them in the book.

“We have hopefully corrected them.”

The stories he is referring to include whether Maori invented trench warfare, and whether land was being held in trust for Ngaiterangi.

On September 19, 1893, the Electoral Act 1893 was passed, giving all women in New Zealand over the age of 21 the right to vote.

As a result of this landmark legislation, New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world in which all women had the right to vote in parliamentary elections.

I remember being delighted that in October 1978, once I was 18 years old I would be eligible to vote.

At the time, it didn’t occur to me that at one time, women weren’t allowed to vote. For me it was the defining action transitioning from child to adult and I didn’t comprehend the impact on women gaining the right to vote nearly a century before.

working with other organisations and community groups across the Bay to organise commemorations to mark 125 years since this ground-breaking event.

These have been running from July 28, which is the anniversary of the ‘monster’ suffrage petition’s submission to Parliament, and will continue through to November 28, which marks the first New Zealand General Election in which women could vote, and finish on December 20 to mark the date when women first voted in the Maori electorates in 1893. The opening event, Jo Torr’s exhibition ‘Vahine- Wahine’ held in the People’s Gallery – Toi ka rere – at The Historic Village, reflected on the position of women through history, with garment sculptures that incorporate an aspect of Polynesian/ Maori or European cloth.

Katikati held a Suffrage 125 Commemoration Day which included a march through town in period costume. Lillybeth Melmoth ran a ‘Frocks on Bikes’ vintage-style event, and local colleges debated whether men should get the vote.

Planting Kate Sheppard camellias is also a feature of some Tauranga commemorations, with Helen Clark planting three at The Elms Te Papa Tauranga, followed by Jan Tinetti planting more at Robbins Park on September 19, and again at the Fourth Avenue Reserve on September 28.

The Fourth Avenue area is significant as the land overlooking the reserve and the Waikareao tidal estuary was once owned by Hilda Hewlett, who was the first British woman to obtain a pilot’s certificate. In 1928–29 Hilda bought four sections on Edgecumbe Road overlooking the estuary, which

had served as the town’s flying field for eight years.

Landing and take-off could take place only for an hour or so either side of low tide.

She was also the inaugural president of the Tauranga Aero and Gliding Club. Hilda closed her aviation company in England, moving to Tauranga with her daughter. As Hilda explained, “the urge to escape from the three Cs – crowds, convention and civilisation – became strong”.

New Zealand also offered opportunities to camp and fish – other long-time interests.

In 1934 Jean Batten, touring New Zealand after her celebrated flight from England to Australia, was welcomed to Tauranga and hosted by Hilda.

Two roads near Tauranga airport have been named for each of them.

Debbie McCauley, heritage specialist at Tauranga City Libraries has been sharing her research into her own suffragist ancestor Eliza Wallis, nee Hart, (1846-1914), who was a signatory to the 1892 and 1893 suffrage petitions, as well as being a founding member of the National Council of Women.

“Sarah Hart was pregnant with her second child when her husband, bricklayer Edward Hart, stole food to feed his hungry family,” says Debbie.

“On the run for 17 months, when captured he served six years on board prison hulks. After his release the family searched for a better life and found it offered by the New Zealand Company, arriving in 1841, the year after the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. “Eliza was their first New Zealander, born in 1846. A mother of 12, she became a suffragist and actively sought the vote for women, which was

granted after a `monster petition’ was presented to Parliament in 1893.”

Debbie has written a bilingual children’s picture book, ‘Eliza and the White Camellia’ as a Suffrage 125 project. The story spans Eliza’s life, from poverty, emigration, elections, illegitimate children, women and the vote, the trial of Minnie Dean, to the formation of the National Council of Women, and concluding the month following the start of World War One. The Papamoa Genealogy Group will be running a drop-in session at Papamoa Library which will enable members of the public to come and find out whether their own ancestors signed the 1893 suffrage petition that resulted in New Zealand being the first self-governing country to give women the vote.

While chatting with Debbie about women’s suffrage in New Zealand, I became aware that the words ‘suffragist’ and ‘suffragette’ mean different things. In 1928 all British women over the age of 21 were granted the right to vote in political elections.

Those women involved in the first wave of the campaign were known as suffragists and believed

in peaceful, constitutional campaign methods. In the early 20th century, after the suffragists failed to make significant progress, a new generation of activists emerged. These women became known as the suffragettes, and they were willing to take direct, militant action for the cause. There were no suffragettes in New Zealand Debbie’s book launch will take place on December 1 at Tauranga City Library. Imprint Gallery Fine art prints and more A new fine art print gallery has opened in Tauranga featuring limited edition prints, reproductions, clothing, handmade shoes, ceramics and paintings.

Nick Eggleston, Jackie Knotts, Stella Clark and Carol Bisset joined forces to set up Imprint Gallery on Market Street at the Tauranga Historic Village.

Each of the four artists are also members of the Incubator Creative Hub group of artists, with their own studio spaces at the village.

The two-room shop has been transformed into an airy and light gallery space, where the public will also find the talented artists at work. Already many artworks have found their way to new homes, as far afield as Texas.

The four artists are still keeping their studios at The Incubator and are all part of The Committed Volunteer base.

“We don’t want to lose that connection with the

Incubator because that’s been really valuable and important,” says Nick, who will be continuing to teach at the Artery. A popular artist at The Incubator, and an art teacher for more than 20 years, he is a highly-skilled watercolour painter. At Imprint he will also be making shoes with embossed cowhide, and teaching others the art of being a cordwainer.

“It’s a lovely space to work in, and the feel of the building as you walk in is fabulous,” says Nick.

“We’ve got mainly prints, but I’m in there painting and making shoes as well.”

Abstract artist Stella Clark is well-known for her large mixed media paintings.

In this gallery she has original prints as well as very high quality Giclée prints on cotton rag and smaller reproductions.

Themes range from local landscapes to abstract work, but always with a contemporary original style.

“I’m also experimenting with woodcuts and cyanotypes,” says Stella. “The idea is that people can come in and see one of us at work, talk with us, ask questions and learn more about the process and the differences between the print techniques.”

Jackie studied etching with John Drawbridge and post-graduate advanced printmaking at Central Saint Martins and Camberwell in London.

“The etching I did on metal involves toxic materials and equipment not available in Tauranga,” says Jackie. “Relief prints like lino cuts require very little equipment and are truly handmade. Lino cuts are now my preferred form of printmaking and offer a multitude of ways to produce prints. I print small editions and if they vary slightly it is possible to buy

a truly original art work at an affordable price.

“I’ve got a lot of lino cuts. Also because I’m a printmaker I’m trying to get in touch with other printmakers and have a space where we can exhibit work.”

Each of the four artists is an established artist in their own right, with a history of teaching and making art.

“The beauty of this gallery is that we are giving people the opportunity to have their work seen,” says Carol. “We’ll bring new work in, see how well it goes, and keep it moving. We have lots of amazing work from other printmakers as well.”

The idea for a printmaking gallery was initially formed through conversations at The Print Club, a monthly group that meets at The Incubator.

The gallery presented a unique and collaborative opportunity to showcase prints, not just fine art printing, but printing in many forms, such as on material.

“I’d been doing dry point printing with Jackie at the monthly workshop,” says Carol.

“Having a gallery meant we could put our prints out, and also include those people who attend that workshop group.”

Carol says dry point is an etching process without acid.

“You draw or scratch into either metal or plastic and ink into the line. For what I do, I need a press. A press forces the ink out of the line onto the paper.”

Carol has taught art in Australia and New Zealand for more than 30 years, with degrees in

fine art and art education.

“We had been talking about extending prints,” says Carol. “They’re not readily available in most gallery spaces.”

Carol has solo exhibitions coming up, so once the Imprint Gallery was launched, she has had to return to focus on preparing work for her exhibitions.

Imprint Gallery artists want to complement existing art outlets at the Historic Village and its mix of prints, wearable art, shoes and other diverse art work adds to the total visitor experience and enjoyment.

The gallery will be open Monday to Friday from 10am03pm; Saturdays from 10am-1pm; and on the Bethlehem Te Puna Lions Village Market days which are held on the first and third Sunday of each month from 9am-1pm. Rosalie Liddle Crawford
