Children’s fitness classes Working out mum and child

It’s the ideal situation for mums – your children are well-cared for, getting some good social stimulation and exercise. And you can go and have a coffee, get a sports massage, or have a workout, comfortable in the knowledge your children are in good hands.

Aspire Health and Sports centre in Bethlehem has started children’s classes where kids can exercise and give mum a bit of free time for her own workout.

“It’s called Born to Move and it’s a Les Mills programme. It’s designed for children by children and the age group that we are focusing on is three to five year olds at the moment,” says Aspire’s group fitness manager Ingrid Willett.

Ingrid and Anna Keogh team up to teach the children’s class to get the little ones moving and grooving.

“It’s a 45-minute class, and we start with a bit of a welcome and give them a fact on what’s going to be in that class today or a fact about the body; like where is your heart, how can you feel that your heart is beating and what happens to your heart when you do exercise.

“It’s a little bit of everything – dance, movement, imagination, exploration, balance, running, jumping, kicking, punching…all of those basic foundation movement skills that they need before they go onto school.”

The idea is that mum can drop the kids off for some socialising and exercise, and she can have some time to herself to use Aspire’s wide range of facilities for herself.

“In the first week some children were saying: ‘Oh mum stay!’ but we said: ‘No no, mum’s going to have a coffee or a workout or whatever’. By the second week we didn’t have any of that,” says Ingrid.

Aspire has a variety of exercise choices under the same roof, so whether mum wants to get a workout in the fullyequipped gym, go for a swim in the 25m heated pool, have a coffee or a facial, or even get that long overdue sports massage or physiotherapy appointment sorted, she can do it comfortable in the knowledge her child is only a few moments away.

But how do the little tykes compare to older adults in fitness class situations?

“I’ve taught adult classes for about 21 years and it’s quite different,” says Ingrid.

“It’s a very different skillset obviously.

You have to be really animated and your movements are big and your face is working really hard.

“Whereas when you’re instructing adults there’s lots of education and motivation and you’re explaining specifically how their body should move and how they should feel it.”

“I was surprised by the growth between the first week and the second week of the children’s class, by what they remembered. They were requesting songs and characters from the week prior,” says Ingrid.

seem that engaged or they might be doing their own thing a bit – which they do at that age, they don’t follow everything or they go off on their own tangent – but it was surprising how much they remembered about what we had done.”

Ingrid says some that might struggle with coordination may be better at something else – like imagination or jumping.

“We don’t ask them to do things that are too difficult.”

Pleasure on a stem A Gentleman and his orchids He pinches his index finger and thumb tenderly around a stem, tipping it slightly so his eyes meet the stigma. Then this gentleman’s soft spot for the species comes tumbling out.

“There’s always something new opening – that’s one of the lovely things – you have a new variety of orchid opening every month,” says Barry Curtis as he shows Life + Style around his collection.

It hangs from baskets, climbs ponga, and sits in pots around his Rea Rd home near Katikati. And there’s more gently tucked inside his orchid house and glass house, thriving and thrilling Barry as they grow.

He says the beauty of an orchid flower is how long it will last. “It’s not like a daffodil, which you put in a vase and three days later it’s finished. An orchid in flower might last for three weeks or even a month.”

And the many varieties – and their differing needs for certain growing conditions – sprout real challenges to growers. Barry loves finally getting them to flower. “When they pop open they are pure pleasure so I bring my flowering orchids into the house. My wife Elizabeth is very happy to see them.”

In fact, not a month goes by when Elizabeth’s table doesn’t have a flowering pot of orchids because Barry’s addiction extends to more than 1000 orchids that flower at differing times throughout the year.

The Tauranga Orchid Society president says he’s been growing orchids for “umm, well, back about 30 years or more”.

“I collected a few from my dad and once you buy

one and see how nice they are and how easy they are to grow…” The appeal? “It’s strange, orchid growers seem to just get bitten a little bit, then start to buy another orchid here and a different orchid there”.

“There are just so many! Most people only think of the Phalaenopsis – moth orchids –or cymbidiums.

But when you get into collecting there is a huge range of shapes, sizes and colours.

Thousands, that come from right around the world and we are so lucky to be able to grow most of them here in NZ, especially the upper North Island.

“They can be easily grown in glass houses or shade houses without heating.”

And his gems? “Oh, there are some gorgeous new varieties coming out and they’re always a treat.

Cattleas are amazing, really beautiful – and people are now developing those so they are smaller and so easy to look after that you can grow them in your windowsill.

“Many varieties have a full scent so you’d think the grower had a full vase of roses in their house.”

After a tour of appreciation, Barry waved me off. I suspect, returning to his little haven in this world – his orchid house.

Inside Kelly’s world And her dream to fight MS Kelly Baker has a wilful way about her. She steadily declines offers of help, to move furniture, grab books or shoes, even flinging hands at a suggestion of you holding onto her crutches. But in essence she needs all the help she can get.

The 37-year-old Katikati woman has multiple sclerosis, which sees multiple areas of scarring – called sclerosis – scattered throughout the brain and spinal cord.

The scars are the result of healing patches of inflammation, caused by damage to nerve fibres and suddenly appearing symptoms are referred to as an attack or relapse.

Some people only experience mild symptoms; others have relapses followed by incomplete remission, when disability may worsen in a stepwise fashion with each relapse.

Kelly has attacks – or relapses – every six weeks to

three months since being diagnosed in 2006 at age 26.

Two years prior Kelly had optic neuritis – or blurred vision – in her left eye. She ended up in Auckland Hospital.

“They did an MRI and a nurse said: ‘You’re so lucky I have not known one person who has been diagnosed with optic neuritis and not come out with MS’.

Kelly thought she’d dodged a bullet. “Two years later – bam!”

One month before her 27th birthday, her world came crashing down. Working for GHD as a technical educator, she was in her dream job.

Up in Kerikeri for work she woke up with a “mega headache”. “My eye had gone funny again and I thought: ‘There is no way I can get over this’.”

She sorted clients and travelled home to Auckland and saw her GP the next day. “They said to go the hospital straight away. I didn’t; I went to see one of my clients. Then I got a flatmate to drop me at hospital – and it was all on.”

Treatment started immediately. “My mum and I call it the MS chemo – it makes your teeth soft, your hair fall out, put on weight – and so much more.”

On a daily basis she now suffers insomnia, vertigo, nausea, pins and needles, bad circulation, foggy brain, migraines, dizziness, fatigue, loss of balance.

She has constant pain in both legs and her weak left arm. “My left side is sensitive; clothing is an issue. I also have spasms in my back and legs as if caterpillars are having a party.”

She has short-term memory loss. Her eyes have trouble with colours and judging distance. And the nerve in her bladder, which signals a toilet stop, also

“I know it will halt my MS. This would mean I won’t get any worse.

If I don’t do anything, the way I’m going…I’m really scared.

What am I going to be like in three-five years’ time?”

spasms “so I need to go to the toilet all the time”.

Very personal issues – but Kelly is willing to share to let people know what it’s like having MS. Essentially housebound, Kelly moved back to Katikati to live with her parents.

And after each attack, she loses a bit more of her body’s ability and strength. How does she deal with this? “The hardest bit was having to leave my job. It was like losing my independence.”

Even when she was little, it was “me do it”. “I still do things even though it’s going to cause me a huge amount of pain.”

Fishing, motocross and hairdressing – her three loves are all out of reach. “I can’t even cut my father’s hair.”

There’s no further treatment she can receive in NZ. On the Expanded Disability Status Scale she’s gone from level 3.5 – moderate disability and no impairment to walking – to level 6.5-7.

This means she requires two walking aids to walk about 20m or worse – she’s unable to walk beyond about 5m even with an aid. At times she has to use a wheelchair.

Four new MS medications are available in NZ but Kelly can’t access them because of her severity of MS. But she’s fighting back. She’s done research and wants to purchase a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy uses an increase in atmospheric pressure to allow the body to incorporate oxygen into blood cells, blood plasma, cerebral spinal fluid and joint fluids.

It’s believed extra oxygen heals the body’s tissue and stimulates growth of new blood vessels, hence helping with MS. “I know it will halt my MS. This would mean I

won’t get any worse. If I don’t do anything, the way I’m going…I’m really scared. What am I going to be like in three-five years’ time?

“Every time I have an attack I don’t go back to where I was. It’s getting worse.”
