“It challenged him as a jeweller, but the end result was something quite incredible,” says the jeweller’s wife Helen Redding.

Adrian has been a qualified manufacturing jeweller for 22 years. This very special bespoke ring, is the one he remembers the most.

“You’re playing with the contrasting brilliance of the diamond facets, to create a piece that was truly unique. The completed ring surpassed expectations, and was exceptional.”

There’s a process Adrian follows – a unique design must tick all three boxes: beauty, practicality, and durability.

Sometimes fantasy can get in the way of reality. “Customers can come in with pictures or ideas that may not be practical, or wearable and will not stand the test of time,” says Helen.

“But this is where Adrian is really excellent in how he can tune into what the customer really loves about that design or concept. It might be the fact that it looked really delicate or had vintage accents.

“From there he can work with the customers to make that piece aesthetically pleasing as well as practical and durable, to last a lifetime.”

The very special ring with a very special sparkle is a bespoke jewel on the finger of one very happy Tauranga woman. An heirloom piece that started from a flicker of an idea to a stunning reality. “Great jewellery is really a fusion of engineering and beauty,” says Helen.

From under the shining showroom chandeliers to behind the glass counters, Bethlehem Jewellers Boutique’s two jewellers and four retail staff provide a full jewellery experience.

He’s working on a piece as Life+Style is invited behind the scenes into the workshop of Bethlehem Jewellers Boutique.

We watch as Adrian melts a piece of gold, taking a raw form and manipulating it into the beginnings of a jewellery piece. He’s working in a tidy dress shirt and pants with a goldsmith’s apron over top.

“Often during the creative process, the

customer will come in to see their piece evolve,” says Helen. “It’s a really consultative process and it’s something that people can have a lot of input in, so that they end up with something very personal.”

Helen’s wearing something very personal – a wedding and engagement ring designed and crafted by her hubby. And the beautiful layered diamond ring shining from her wedding finger is simply beautiful.

“It’s something very personal,” says Helen.

“Whether it’s a husband who’s designed something or someone who has put that love and thought into designing a piece, there’s just something a little bit more special about it.”

And taking the time to pick the perfect ring is also very meaningful.

Five, six, seven, eight What it’s like dancing in America “Five, six, seven, eight.” I move, turn, shake and shimmy to the beat in shadow of the choreographer.

Dancers fill the two-storey purpose-built studio in downtown Santa Monica, Los Angeles. The atmosphere is pumping.

The Jackson 5’s ‘ABC’ is playing full volume – you can hear it halfway down the street.

I’m used to the hired dance studio shared with a local school in Mount Maunganui, where pupils follow a syllabus.

Not here – everyone is going for it.

Choreographers are brought in from all over LA to lead the lessons. They move, you move. And the dancers love it – everyone’s encouraging everyone and positivity is high.

I’m not here for an audition or to be talentscouted as one of Beyonce’s back-up dancers.

(Although that would be quite incredible).

I’m here with my sister just doing what I love and playing with possibility.

We tease the thought of making it big in Hollywood.

After all, it’s where many young hopefuls who dream of dancing or acting in big movies and walking the red carpet come to test the waters. We’re little fish in the big pond of America.

My sister’s an actress back home and me a dancer. And so is everyone else in Hollywood

– where everyone’s a dancer, actress, movie star – or who knows a sister or brother of a cousin who is one.

We travel Hollywood by Uber. Monday’s driver is a dancer. Tuesday’s is an actress.

Wednesday’s is a dancer and so is Thursday’s.

Friday’s is a movie producer, Saturday’s is a film-maker and Sunday’s is the dad of a famous actor on Nickelodeon.

Back in the studio, I’m out to impress. And years of perfecting the art form at Mount Maunganui Dance Academy is paying off.

My feet are in time, my arms are in all the right places and I’m turning the same direction as the other dancers. I’m keeping up.

“You’re incredible,” says the dance teacher.

Her name is Frankie. Flattery is a wonderful thing when you’re not expecting it.

Her kind words come as a surprise and I’m thankful to my dance teacher back home for molding, perfecting and encouraging my style and technique.

Maybe I could make it big in Hollywood?

Suddenly the thought is teasing me.

Playing with possibility was one reason for visiting America. The second was to tick something off my bucket list.

I wanted to do my best Michael Jackson pose by his star on the Walk of Fame. And I did.

I moved through the crowds of fans searching more than 2500 stars on the sidewalk of Hollywood Boulevard to find MJs

I rise on to my big toes, bend my knees and push my hips forward trying to imitate one of the pop star’s famous moves.

Just like the paparazzi, my sister is ready and waiting with the camera and snaps the shot.

I always dreamed of becoming one of Michael Jackson’s back-up dancers. That moment on my big trip to America, was the closest I’ll get.

Perhaps I’ll ask Justin Timberlake if I visit Hollywood again. Maybe, just maybe, Zoe Hunter there’ll be an opening.

That’s what happens when you grow up in Dad’s garage – and end up running it yourself .

So we’ve got some interesting tools and interesting mementos from way back.”

She says customers love it – looking at grainy black-and-white photos and rusty tools adorning the walls – and sharing in their memories.

“It’s quite surprising the amount of people that can relate to something – like old spanners and the old till. It’s been quite interesting for people, it’s been quite good.”

The tools have been thoughtprovoking for Sandra personally, too.

Bringing back memories of working in the garage with Dad. “Setting up this wall has been really good for me; I’ve found a tool, a valve grinder, and I always used to do the valve grinding by hand with Dad, not knowing that this tool that was hanging on the wall would have done it for me.”

This garage on Fraser St was the result of idle hands after World War II. John Phillips joined the Second World War at age 17, because “all of his mates were joining up, so even though he was a little bit young, he joined up. He was in the army and then the air force up in the Solomon

Islands,” says Sandra.

When the war came to a close and servicemen that had been scattered throughout the globe returned to their roots, John came back to Tauranga in 1946 and retreated to the cowshed.

Sandra’s nana owned the property – including the cowshed – and John owned the section of land that Phillips Garage is on now.

That’s where Phillips Garage originated – grown from the good old Kiwi roots of a cowshed.

He started by repairing neighbours and friends and family’s cars, then went on to supply rentals to those in Tauranga who couldn’t afford the maintenance and upkeep of a car after the war.

From the cowshed developed a proper repair shop. When the rental association suggested John build a custom-made garage for rentals, John obliged – even if it took four years.

“I found a letter the other day and it said that he missed out on his first allocation of concrete as there was a national shortage of materials, so that’s why it took him a little bit – from 1946 to 1950 – to build the building,” says Sandra.

From there, the garage became a family business – first John partnered

with his brother Ray in 1946, then later with daughter Sandra in 1983.

Phillips Garage has been a constant on Fraser St, and though time has swapped a dirt road for a paved one, cows for cars, and black-and-white for colour photographs, Phillips Garage has stood the Cayla-Fay Saunders test of time.

Claire’s Choices My favourite stops in the city December is upon us. Like most of you, I am left wondering where the year disappeared to? It’s been a while since I wrote my wine columns, a subject dear to my heart. And I’ve had a lot of people ask me when I’m going to start writing them again. Life + Style has been receiving excellent feedback and it is certainly the right place for a wine column.

However, while I sip on a Pinot Noir, I’m actually going to write about some healthy choices instead.

We are so lucky in our awesome city to have so many wonderful people, places to go, and things to eat and do, so I’m going to write about a few of my current favourite stops during the week. I promise my next column will be about wine.

going to exercise then to me it makes sense to be able to walk there. So first up on my list is a trip to Flow Pilates with Jane McLennan. Jane graduated as a Pilates instructor from the Hearts and Bones instructor training programme in 2013, all her classes are tailored to meet your body’s specific needs and personal goals. I was really impressed with the variety of classes and the equipment Jane has in her studio.

So I headed off for my first private lesson. I decided a few private lessons were probably a good way to get started ensuring I didn’t embarrass myself with forgetting which was right or left, or when to breathe in or out! Jane made me feel very comfortable, and I found myself soon feeling happy to attend group classes.

Flow Pilates has fitted right into my lifestyle, I am able to whip up to a class on Grey St basically when it suits with my work schedule. Pilates is a low impact, total body workout that focuses on strengthening the core and elongating muscles.

Jane focuses on a resistance-based training programme that uses spring tension to strengthen and stretch, allowing the body to create a long, strong, lean form.

Awesome, I have been hoping to grow a few inches taller all my life, so watch this space!

Next on my list is a frequent visit to the awesome team at Pluto on Devonport Rd. The lovely Victoria and the rest of the team are always positive and happy! I love my regular wheatgrass shots, and I am sure it keeps me very healthy. Sometimes I even throw in a green juice for added assurance I have had my quota of greens for the day.

Wheatgrass is an energiser. The vitality obtained from one 30ml shot of wheatgrass is remarkable.

It has the vitamin and mineral equivalent of 2kg of fresh vegetables. You will feel recharged and refreshed.

I am hooked on the Bangkok falafels served with Thai slaw Penang mayo peanuts and coriander with chili sauce on the side. Oh yep feel the heat! This has to be the best value lunch at only $12.
