A sparkling idea! Katikati siblings Megan Connelly, 6, and her sister Aimee Connelly, 4, have got their father to solve a shining dilemma for the town’s Christmas tree. Last year Megan asked Brendan Connelly,

who was helping to install the town’s Christmas tree in front of the Katikati War Memorial Hall, why it didn’t have a star on top. “She asked if she could put the star on top and I was like, ‘What star?’ She told

me, ‘Dad, every Christmas tree has a star on top’,” Brendan said with a laugh. “It got me thinking.” Fast-forward 12 months and the family has found a 1.2m-tall star with LED lighting for

Katikati’s Christmas tree gets a star! A simple question from a Katikati 5-year-old sparked a festive mission by her father to secure a star for their community’s Christmas tree, to be put up next month.

Each year a group of helpers and Katch Katikati put up the Christmas tree outside Katikati War Memorial Hall on the main street. The landmark signals the beginning of the festive season – but it has never had a decoration at the top. Traditionally, many Kiwis place a star at the top of their Christmas trees to represent the Star of Bethlehem from the biblical Nativity story. Last year Brendan Connelly, who owns Beacon Engineering Katikati, was helping put up the tree with his 5-year-old daughter Megan. “She asked if she could put the star on top and I was like, ‘What star?’ She told me, ‘Dad, every Christmas tree has a star on top’,” Brendan said with a laugh. “It got me thinking.” In haste he tried to find a suitable star but with Christmas close, they were sold out, he said. This June he pitched the idea to Katch Katikati promotions manager Jacqui Knight. “He was thrilled that we were happy to take it on.” Brendan went searching and purchased a 1.2m-tall star with LED lighting from Celebrations New Zealand. He has since found seven local businesses, along with his own, to fund the star’s purchase.

They are Bridgestone Katikati, FCL Katikati, Buzz Apiaries Ltd, Northern Automotive, Earthforce Nursery, Western Bay Earthworks and S White Earthmoving, and Brendan’s Beacon Engineering Katikati. Now, a year later, Brendan, Megan and younger sister Amiee plan to help put their community’s Christmas tree up on November 10 – and the star on top! “Megan is very excited this year to help put up the tree,” her mother Kelly Connelly said. “She can’t wait to help!” Knight said Katikati’s Christmas tree is owned and managed by Katch Katikati. “We purchased it in 2015 with a grant

from TECT [now called Manawa Trust]. We, along with the Katikati War Memorial Hall, have also purchased additional garlands and decorations,” she said. “It’s fantastic that Brendan contacted us about purchasing the star to finish off the tree. We are all about community involvement and engagement and this is the perfect example. We are always looking for value added to anything that we do, so this is like the icing on the cake!” Knight said the Katikati Floral Art Group help with the annual installation, which is “another great collaboration to bring joy to Merle Cave the town”.

Katikati reacts to cancellation of its biggest summer event While some in the Katikati community were shocked to learn of the 2027 cancellation of the town’s biggest summer event, others weren’t surprised but more disappointed to see the festival’s hiatus. The Katikati FunFest Charitable Trust, which is behind the annual AvoFest, this month announced that rising costs and economic pressures had forced the popular event to take a year-long break. Trust chair Trevor Burgess said the decision not to hold a festival next year was not taken lightly and was made after looking at several alternatives. He said organisers were planning a “refreshed and revitalised” return in 2028. Talisman Restaurant & Garden Bar co-owner Michele Reichmuth said AvoFest 2027’s cancellation was a significant loss for Katikati and the wider community. “AvoFest has become an important event for our town, both socially and economically. For the Talisman, it has traditionally been one of our busiest trading days of the year, and we accommodate festival-goers who travel to Katikati specifically for the event.”

from accommodation providers and hospitality businesses to retailers, supermarkets, service stations and other local operators. It’s an important boost during the summer trading period, and one that many businesses genuinely appreciate.” Reichmuth said she acknowledged the increasing financial pressures facing event organisers, particularly in the current

Distillery, a festival vendor, said it had been a great event for the Western Bay “and we’ve loved being a part of it”. “We know how much work the volunteers put in. Costs for exhibitors and it seems the event organisers have increased sharply,” he said. “Our own costs to attend increased significantly last year, largely because of higher licensing fees, which nearly tripled, so we understand the pressure the organisers are under. “We’d love to see the festival return in 2028, and we’d welcome the chance to sit down with the organisers and [the] council early to help find a model that works for the community, the volunteers

An influx

Reichmuth said the festival provided an opportunity for local hospitality businesses to extend the experience for visitors beyond the event itself. “While the festival is underway, we’re generally quieter, but as the afternoon progresses, we welcome people back into town. We increase our staffing levels and often arrange live entertainment in our garden bar, creating a relaxed atmosphere where visitors can enjoy a meal, unwind and finish their day.” Reichmuth believed the economic benefits extended beyond the hotel. “Katikati is already a busy destination over summer, but with many of our locals travelling away for the holidays, events like AvoFest provide a valuable additional influx of visitors. It puts our town on the map, attracts people from outside the region and encourages them to experience what Katikati has to offer. The benefits flow right throughout our community,

economic climate.” However, she thought it’s important that people understand how expensive it had become to organise and deliver events of this scale. “The costs associated…have all increased significantly. As business owners, we’re experiencing many of these same pressures ourselves. Events like AvoFest face exactly the same difficulties, often on a much larger scale,” Reichmuth said. “I sincerely hope this isn’t the end of AvoFest. Events like this are incredibly valuable to smaller communities, and I believe Katikati would be poorer without it.” Kaimai View Motel manager Andy Clothier said he had recently taken on the business so couldn’t comment on past bookings related to the event. “All I can say is I’d expect it will make an impact.” Katikati Community Board deputy chair Anne Henry said it would have been a hard decision for the trust to make

and they wouldn’t have made it lightly. “It is a shame but with rising costs – you know times are tough – and an event such as this has to break even.” Derek Masters, the chief executive of DMS Progrowers Ltd, which had sponsored the main stage of the event for the last few years, said it was disappointing that the 2027 AvoFest won’t proceed. “It’s Katikati’s biggest summer event was named after the such a great event and we hear avocado to boost the town’s profile of growing the fruit. a lot of positive feedback from our avocado growers that it’s nice to see and local businesses that make it what the good old avocado fruit get some it is.” Jacqui Knight, the promotions recognition when compared to such a big manager of Katch Katikati, which held dominance of kiwifruit in the area.” a contract with the Katikati FunFest Masters said he was “confident that in Charitable Trust to organise the event the following year, 2028, DMS will again on its behalf, said Katch Katikati’s board declined to comment on the event’s 2027 support this event”. Public art symposium seeks volunteers Public Art Ōmokoroa is putting a call out for 40 volunteers to come forward to help the group run a free, 10-day live sculpture symposium next month.

Symposium at the Point will run at Ōmokoroa Domain from November 12 to 22 between 10am-4pm daily, with 10 to 12 artists creating works on-site. Public entry is free. Led by Public Art Ōmokoroa, the event will turn the domain into a shared creative space, where visitors can watch artworks take shape over time and see the skill, thinking and materials behind each piece. Group member Linda Chalmers said the idea behind the event is to give people the opportunity to meet artists, watch them work and become involved in the creative process. “We knew that there’s a lot of other sculpture events around New Zealand where the artists bring in finished works, and they go on exhibition for two or three weeks,” Chalmers said. “But there aren’t many events where artists are actually working on-site, and people can go up and talk to them, participate in the work, add to the work and revisit.” She said the symposium will feature a range of artistic mediums, with an education programme offered to local schools and workshops for the public. For example, artist Jeff Thompson will run a workshop using corrugated iron strips for weaving, while Wellington artist Sheyne Tuffery will lead participants in

creating artist prints. A people’s choice vote would allow visitors to have their say, with the intention of securing a sculpture for the peninsula at the end of the event. A live auction will be held on November 22, giving people the opportunity to purchase works created during the symposium. The work selected for the community will not be included in the auction. Public Art Ōmokoroa had received funding support for the event from Creative Bay of Plenty, Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty Events Fund, Ōmokoroa - Kaimai Community Board, We Care Community Trust and Ōmokoroa Centre Trust. A friends and patrons group had also been established in Ōmokoroa to support the project. As preparations gathered pace, Chalmers said Public Art Ōmokoroa had about 40 volunteer shifts that needed to be filled across the 10 days of the event. Roles included welcoming visitors, parking marshalling, first aid, putting up gazebos and signage, and helping with the event infrastructure. Volunteers do not need to commit to the entire event, with opportunities available for individual three-hour shifts. Chalmers said retired people in particular could bring a wide range of skills and experience to community events. “We’d love them to still be involved in kind of helping us and spreading the word about the symposium.” Chalmers said her group hoped the

event could become a regular event, perhaps every two or three years, with the longer-term aim of adding permanent public artworks to Ōmokoroa’s walkways and cycleways. To learn more about the volunteer roles at the symposium and how to sign up,

Seawall upgrade to begin at Ōmokoroa The Beach Grove Reserve seawall in Ōmokoroa. Photo / Western Bay of Plenty District Council

Work to renew aand strengthen the seawall at Ōmokoroa’s Beeach Grove Reserve was set to begin this weeek, and temporary closures were expecteed while construction waas underway. A Western Bay of P Plenty District Council statement said the project is due to start on October 27 and wou uld take about eight to 10 weeks to complete, d depending on weather and tidal conditions. As part of the workk, a section of the shared path between Beach h Grove and Cooney Reserve would be closed for three to four weeks because it is too narrow to reemain safely open alongside construction activityy. A signed detour wiill direct pedestrians and cyclists via Cooney R Reserve and Ōmokoroa Rd. The boat ramp will remain open throughout

Two re-elected, one newbie Kate Barry-Piceno, Mark Arundel and Jon Murie have been elected as trustees of the Manawa Trust (formerly TECT). Results from the 2026 trustee election were declared after voting closed midday on October 23, a statement said. Barry-Piceno topped the poll with 9162 votes, followed by Arundel with 7349 and Murie with 5610. Murie secured the third and final trustee position by a margin of 152 votes over Debbie Ireland, who received 5458 votes. The remaining candidates were Hori Ahomiro with 4160 votes, Murray Lapworth with 3273, Mark Irving with 2681, Fraser Lellman with 2407 and Ray Anderson with 1761. There were six blank votes and no informal votes. Independent returning officer Warwick Lampp formally declared Barry-Piceno, Arundel and Murie elected. The voter return was 10.54%, representing 15,594 votes. Existing trustee Peter Blackwell retired at the election.

the project, but grassed reserve areas on either side will be temporarily closed so materials and equipment can be stored and moved safely. Parking along this section of Beach Grove would also be unavailable. Western Bay of Plenty District Council reserves and facilities manager Janine Field said the seawall had gradually been damaged by high tides and wave action. “High tides and waves have gradually worn away at the seawall, so it’s important we strengthen it to protect the reserve and pathway. “People will see trucks, machinery and large rocks moving through the reserve while the work is underway, so please take care and follow the signs.” Field said the work would help keep the area safe and accessible for future users. Project updates are available at the council’s community engagement website.

New joint organisation name confirmed A new joint water organisation that will be operational from July 1 next year has a name. Tāheke – Bay Waters Limited is the name of the joint water organisation being established by Western Bay of Plenty District Council (WBOPDC) and Tauranga City Council to deliver drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services across the sub-region. The organisation is being established created under the Government’s Local Water Done Well framework. According to WBOPDC, Tāheke speaks

to the flow of water descending or flowing down. “From drops of rain, to mighty rapids and powerful waterfalls, Tāheke describes the flow of water across our natural environment and landscape. Bay Waters is inspired by the waters that define and connect our region.” WBOPDC said the name was developed through a collaborative process involving water services staff from both councils, tangata whenua representatives, te reo Māori experts and joint committee representatives.
