Doggie takeover! Katikati is about to go to the dogs again this Labour weekend as canines and their owners from across the nation descend on the Uretara Domain for a massive Tauranga Kennel Association Championship Show. The show will encompass seven groups of competition and a whopping

eight specialty shows, which means the event on October 24-25 will be bursting with dogs of all shapes, sizes, colours, behaviours and characteristics. “It’s just such a fabulous sight to come and watch and see so many different dogs – and you’ll see dogs you’ll never see just walking down the street,”

Katikati resident Michelle Reichmuth said. Pictured with her family’s 12-week-old German Shorthaired Pointer male pup, named Tig, Reichmuth is the show manager – but to keep things neutral, she will not show or judge any breeds or classes this weekend.

She said the dog show is free to the public to enter and anyone can come along for two days of dog showing fun, and dog-product related stalls and education. “It’s a good place if you’re wanting to look at dogs.” Read more on page 3.

Tonnes of metal mustered for club’s rebuild Nearly 4.5 tonnes of scrap metal have been turned into nearly $15,000 for Te Puna Rugby Sports and Cultural Club’s clubroom rebuild project. Club member and long-time Te Puna resident Beth Bowden said it was “all go, all day” for a group of club volunteersturned-metal musterers on October 11. The club’s Metal Muster fundraiser invited people to drop their unwanted metal items at three locations in Te Puna’s Maramatanga Park, Te Puna Farmlands carpark and the Landmax depot on Plummers Point Rd – or request for it to be collected from their properties. Bowden said the teams took in nearly 4.5 tonnes of scrap and made nearly $15,000 for the rebuild project fund – and “that was just on the day”. “By 9.30am, the first of several skips supplied by Sam Gavigan of Metalco was full and a steady stream of deliveries was still underway.” Bowden said volunteer Charlie Savage made a truck-and-trailer run in from Katikati and the Farmlands site was busy until 3pm, when it had to close to ensure the carpark was available for the next day’s trading. The team volunteers numbered 25, Andrew George said. With James Vincent co-ordinating the day. “The work put in was awesome, the support from the community was out the gate. I had a feeling we might have been busy, but today was next level,” George said.

Spend less on the basics. Keep more for everything else.

And their work is not finished. “I’ve got a fair few bits and bobs still to collect,” Vincent said. That included a 14,000-litre stainless steel vat tank, tractors and 2.5 tonnes of steel bits and bobs. “Oh yeah, and a caravan. Flipping heck!” The men said contributions covered all kinds of scrap metal – whiteware, car batteries, bikes, leftover machinery and roofing iron. Bowden said more than $3500 came in from donations of non-ferrous metal and the lead batteries collected mounted up to $1400. The funds will go into the club’s rebuild kitty that will build new clubrooms on the same site as the current facility at Maramatanga Park, which was built in 1971. The build was estimated to cost a total of $5 million.

Bowden said the community effort will boost the Te Puna Rugby Sports and Cultural Club’s rebuilding fund over the first $100,000 mark. Another $200,000 is needed to get the detailed plans, professional reports needed for final sign-off from the council for the building consent. “After that, grants will be sought to fund the multi-million-dollar project.” Overwhelming interest in the project had prompted Metalco to leave the club’s account open to more metal donations at their Aerodrome Rd depot, Bowden said. “That means more metal will be accepted by Metalco, with funds donated towards the club’s rebuild fund.” Meanwhile, the club’s metal musterers are thinking about whether they have the wherewithal to run another community drive in a few months.

Reichmuth said an international panel

Classes are Baby Puppy 3-6 months, Puppy 6-12 months, Junior 12-24 months, Intermediate 24-36 months, New Zealand-bred class is for any dog born here, and Open for any dog aged 6 months-plus.

Even into his later years, Ian made regular evening visits to the clubhouse, checking equipment and ensuring everything was secure.” Lloyd said his legacy continued at the club through the Robinson family’s longstanding involvement in surf lifesaving. “Together with his late wife Heather, who supported his lifelong involvement in the club, Ian raised four sons – Bruce, Neil, Danny and Glenn – who have each shared in the family’s longstanding connection with Waihī Beach surf lifesaving. Road resurfacing season Western Bay of Plenty District Council says its busy 2026/2027 road resurfacing programme has begun.

“We’ll be resurfacing more than 30km of road with chipseal across the district between now and April 2027, as part of our commitment to delivering safe, reliable, fit-for-purpose local roads for our communities,” the council said in a statement. “We will also be sealing some sections of road for the first time as part of our seal extension programme.” Council’s team lead road maintenance Aidan Glynn said weather conditions were important, with spring and summer the best times of year for road resurfacing. “We carefully plan our work to make the most of the warmer, drier weather and longer daylight hours, which helps the new seal bond to the existing road surface properly and gives it the best chance of lasting for many years,” Glynn said.

Best to balance

“During the peak summer months, we do our best to balance doing the work during school holiday periods, when the roads are quieter at peak times, whilst also doing what we can to minimise the impact for road users during the busy holiday period.” Heavy vehicles and moisture are two major causes of road damage. “Therefore, one of the most important things we can do is protect the surface of the road,” Glynn said. He likened a road seal to paint on a house.

“Paint on a wooden house helps keep water out and protects what’s underneath. In this case, it’s the road underneath. Over time, the seal wears down and becomes less effective. The average life of a road surface is 10 to 12 years, depending on traffic volume, so we aim to resurface roads before the surface starts to deteriorate, which also helps prevent the need for major reconstruction.”

Seal extension programme

Council said it was responsible for 1077km of local roads, which included 150km that was unsealed. “We’re currently working to seal McMeeking Rd in Te Puke leading to Te Matai Marae, and a 2km section of Work Rd in Aongatete.” On top of providing a smoother road surface and reducing dust, sealing roads made them easier to maintain, and improved drainage so the road was more resilient to heavy rain, the council said. Council’s director of transportation Calum McLean said it costs about $750,000 per kilometre to construct a seal extension on low-volume rural roads. “We’d love to seal them all, however we must prioritise which unsealed roads we fund, and when. Each unsealed road is assessed on the volume of traffic using the road and the dust exposure to residents living on the road.” Drivers are encouraged to take care when travelling through road works, with traffic management in place.
