‘Lap’ Ōmokoroa to fuel diabetes support! Western Bay of Plenty residents are invited to lace up and “lap” part of Ōmokoroa Peninsula on October 17 to help bolster funding for diabetes support work. Members from three Bay of Plenty Lions clubs – Ōmokoroa, Katikati and Waihī – have joined together to host a community fun walk, with proceeds going to Diabetes New Zealand. Event spokeswoman Sara Patrick told Katikati News the walk is to help raise awareness of diabetes and promote healthy lifestyles in a fun,
family-friendly way. The fun walk will begin at 10am on October 17 and starts from the Ōmokoroa Pavilion at Western Ave Sportsground. The 3.5km route, which includes about 500 steps, will follow the circumference of the local golf course, with sea views and mostly flat terrain. “It’s a beautiful walk,” Patrick said. The walk is open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels – and wheelchairs, prams, bikes, scooters and dogs on leads are welcome. Those wanting to participate can pre-register online before the event, or register on the day. Entry is via gold
coin donation. Registrations will close at noon. Patrick said every kilometre walked would count towards the national Lap the Map challenge, an annual fundraising and awareness event held in November by Lions clubs alongside Diabetes New Zealand. “People who participate will be helping to collectively cover the distance around New Zealand’s coastline.” Patrick said more than 340,000 New Zealanders are living with diabetes and about 16,330 people are diagnosed with the condition every year. “That equates to about 45 new diagnoses every day, highlighting the
importance of education, awareness and early detection.” Patrick said the walk’s event headquarters at the pavilion will also feature blood sugar testing, a sausage sizzle and family-friendly activities and spot prizes. “The walk is a great opportunity for families, friends and community groups to come together, enjoy the outdoors and support a cause that affects thousands of New Zealanders every year.” To get involved and help make a difference, one step at a time, register online at: https://events.humanitix. com/diabetes-awareness

Community urged to muster its metal this Sunday Western Bay of Plenty residents wanting to rid their backyards of rusty, old metal items can do so this Sunday – and support a Te Puna community project at the same time.
Te Puna Rugby Sports and Cultural Club is hosting a Metal Muster on October 11 to fundraise to help get its clubroom rebuild project off the ground. In March the club announced it would build a new clubrooms on the same site as the current facility, which was built in 1971. To serve the club’s 400 members who compete in ruggbyy, netball, softball, cricket and kap pa haka, the new clubrooms would be twice the size of the current facility, with greater capacity for functions.

The club’s building committee was formed in 2024 and had designed plans for the build – but it needs to raise $300,000 for plan, council consent applications and permit-related costs. The build was estimated to cost a total of $5 million. Bowden said Sunday’s Metal Muster Fundraiser invited people to drop their unwanted metal items at three locations in Te Puna – Maramatanga Park, Te Puna Farmlands carpark, and the Landmax depot on Plummers Point Rd. “Skip bins will be in place early in the day at three pick-up points in the district,” Bowden said. “All scrap metal is acceptable, with non-ferrous items – made of brass, aluminium or copper – being most appreciated. Whiteware, car batteries, broken bikes, or leftover bits of old engines are also fine.” Bowden said teams will be stationed at each collection point to help offload any kind of scrap metal and sort it. “People can also arrange for larger items to be picked up. To do so, contact Andrew George 021 2226270 and James Vincent 027 3197115.” Club helpers would transport the donations to recycling firm Metalco in Mount Maunganui. “All proceeds [reaped from the metal donated] will go to the TPRSCC’s building fund, currently standing at

$100,000,” Bowden said. With $300,000 needed to get the building plans, professional reports and final sign-off from Western Bay of Plenty Council for the building consent, Bowden encouraged the community to follow the Te Puna Rugby Sports and Cultural Club Facebook page for future fundraisers. Bowden said once $300,000 was raised, grants would be sought to fund the multi-million-dollar project.

Closure planned for Ōmokoroa to Tauranga cycleway Cyclists and walkers using the Ōmokoroa to Tauranga cycleway are being advised of a temporary closure for maintenance this month.
A section of the shared pathway between Jess Rd and Newnham Rd will be closed from October 12 to 16 for resurfacing repairs and vegetation clearance, a Western Bay of Plenty District Council statement said. The work will focus on a narrow section of trail near the bridge on the Newnham Rd side, where contractors will use heavy machinery to replace the surface. “Weed trees along the railway corridor will also be removed,” the council said. Council cycleways manager Scott Parker said the surfacing repairs would be on a narrow section with no room to pass. “The work involves heavy machinery, so
the safest option for everyone is to close the track temporarily.” There will be no detour available, meaning anyone wanting to travel the full cycleway should “rethink their plans”. Parker said the work had been scheduled to minimise disruption. “This is a popular track, particularly during the warmer months, so we’ve timed the work to avoid the cherry blossom season and school holidays, and have it finished before Labour Weekend and the start of the busy summer season.” The 19km Ōmokoroa to Tauranga cycleway connects Ōmokoroa with Tauranga’s wider cycling network through a combination of off-road trails, boardwalks and road links. About 250 people use the section of trail between Ōmokoroa and the Wairoa River each day on average.
