coordinator Pippa ‘Pip’ Coombes visited Rarotonga last year, she was curious about the island’s conservation work.

She didn’t expect a conversation to eventually lead to volunteers hauling automated predator traps high into one of the island’s steepest and most inaccessible valleys.

Almost a year later, that is exactly what has happened.

Sustainable Waihī Beach, under the Live Well Waihī Beach umbrella, has partnered with Rarotonga’s Te Ipukarea Society (TIS) to introduce automated predator-control technology to the Takuvaine Valley cloud

Katikati’s Monster Book Sale is only a month away – but organisers want the community to know that they are still collecting donations for the annual event.

The sale – a well-loved, popular community event – is a fundraiser for Katikati’s St Pius X Catholic Church. “There are always queues of people lined up at the door before we open at 8am; they’re nearly tripping over each other,” organiser Pauline van Rijen said.

This year the book sale will take place at Katikati War Memorial Hall from 8am to 5pm on September 19 and 8am to 2pm on September 20.

“Most books are $2 and $3 and only special books will have a special price.”

The sale began in 2007 as a fundraiser for the new church built at 85 Beach Rd, van Rijen said. “Once that was paid for we decided to carry because it was so much part of the Katikati calendar – everybody loves it!”

Today it was so well supported that van Rijen said the church had stopped its other fundraisers because it only needed to rely on funding from book sale to cover its costs.

“I won’t disclose what we make from the sale but it allows up to upkeep our church,” she said.

The church began collecting donations in July and will continue to do so until two days before the book sale. “Our donation cut-off is September 17,” van Rijen said.

“The main thing that is popular, of course, is the fiction books but we collect anything. We do find that categories like business, reference, religion are not good sellers but we say ‘Yes’ to everything.”

People were encouraged to drop off clean, saleable donations of books, jigsaws, indoor games, CDs and DVDs to the front entrance of the church.

“We ask people to bring us whatever they have got – but not magazines, encyclopedias and old cassette and video tapes.

“We do receive a lot of rubbish, so we ask that donations are in good enough condition to sell.”

From Waihī Beach to the clouds of Rarotonga A chance conversation on holiday has led to a new conservation partnership between Waihī Beach and Rarotonga with automated rat traps now operating more than 400 metres above sea level in a remote cloud forest on the Cook Islands.

When Waihī Beach environmental coordinator Pippa ‘Pip’ Coombes visited Rarotonga last year, she was curious about the island’s conservation work.

She didn’t expect that conversation to eventually lead to volunteers hauling automated predator traps high into one of the island’s steepest and most inaccessible valleys.

Almost a year later, that is exactly what has happened.

Sustainable Waihī Beach, under the Live Well Waihī Beach umbrella, has partnered with Rarotonga’s Te Ipukarea Society (TIS) to introduce automated predator-control technology to the Takuvaine Valley cloud forest.

Ten AT220 and AT230 automated resetting traps have been installed more than 400 metres above sea level – the first traps of their kind to be used in the Cook Islands.

The high-altitude forest is an important refuge for native wildlife, including the Tahiti petrel, endemic skinks and native plants. Rats and feral cats pose a major threat, particularly to ground-nesting seabirds.

Steep, forested terrain

The challenge for conservation volunteers is getting to the traps.

Reaching the upper Takuvaine Valley means tackling steep, heavily forested terrain, making regular trap checks demanding and time-consuming.

Coombes said seeing the effort required to maintain predator control in such rugged country stayed with her after her first visit.

“These volunteers are doing incredible conservation mahi in extraordinarily difficult terrain,” she said. “It made me think about whether there was a way technology could help reduce some of the physical workload, particularly in those areas where every trip to check a trap takes so much time and energy.”

Unlike conventional single-set traps, the automated traps reset themselves after activation and can reset up to 100 times before needing servicing. They can remain in the field for up to six months.

For volunteers working in rugged

mountain country, fewer trips into the forest could mean more time available for other conservation work.

“If technology can mean fewer trips up the mountain while maintaining consistent predator control, that frees up valuable volunteer time for other work,” Coombes said.

Coombes first visited Te Ipukarea Society in 2025 after asking about conservation work on Rarotonga.

One of the island’s great conservation success stories is the recovery of the kakerori, or Rarotonga flycatcher.

The endemic bird was reduced to 29 individuals in 1989 and was once considered one of the world’s rarest birds.

Decades of predator control and intensive conservation work had helped the population climb to more than 500.

Inspired

But Coombes also saw the enormous volunteer effort required to maintain predator control in Rarotonga’s rugged interior.

“I was really inspired by what the Rarotongan conservation community has achieved,” she said.

“The kakerori story shows what sustained, community-led conservation can accomplish, but it also highlighted just how much mahi goes into keeping predator control operating in such challenging terrain.”

That sparked an idea: could automated trapping technology developed and used in New Zealand reduce the physical workload for volunteers?

Coombes returned to Waihī Beach determined to find the funding to give the idea a try.

The result was $10,000 in funding and 10 automated traps, supplied with the help of NZ Auto Traps’ David Crimp, making their way from New Zealand to Rarotonga.

Coombes then returned to work alongside the TIS team and conservation volunteers during installation, sharing knowledge about trap placement, installation and maintenance while also learning from the Rarotongan conservation team.

Not one-way

For Coombes, that exchange is just as important as the technology.

“What I really love about this project is that it isn’t a one-way relationship,” she said.

“We have so much that we can learn from each other. Our Pacific communities share many of the same environmental challenges, and our taiao [environment] doesn’t recognise geographical boundaries.”

More than traps

For Waihī Beach, the project is about more than 10 traps.

Coombes said that a trap funded from Waihī Beach can help protect a seabird in a Rarotongan cloud forest. Knowledge developed in one community can help another. And if technology can save volunteers a difficult climb up a mountain, those hours can instead be spent protecting more of the places and species that matter.

“This isn’t just about putting traps in a forest. It is about sharing knowledge, sharing practical solutions and building relationships between Pacific Rosalie Liddle Crawford communities.”

Coombes said the partnership reflected the wider principles of kaitiakitanga.

Katikati pool makes a splash at Aquatics Awards Katikati’s Dave Hume Pool has been recognised on the national stage, receiving a Merit Award in the Aquatic Facility of the Year category at Recreation Aotearoa’s annual Aquatics Awards.

The award celebrates excellence in aquatic facility design, operation and community impact, and acknowledges the partnership between Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Bay Venues and the Dave Hume Swimming Pool Trust.

The pool was one of four finalists in the category, which was ultimately won by the University of Auckland’s $320 million Hiwa Recreation Centre.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council reserves and facilities manager Peter Watson said the award reflected years of dedication from the Katikati community and the organisations that worked together to secure the facility’s future.

“This is a fantastic result for Katikati and everyone who has supported Dave Hume Pool over the years.

alongside support from the Dave Hume Pool Trust, which contributed $65,000, and a further $655,000 from external funders including TECT, the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board and the Lions Club of Katikati.

Since reopening under Bay Venues management at the end of last year, the facility had achieved PoolSafe accreditation for the first time and recorded strong participation in programmes including Learn to Swim, Aquafit and community activities.

Never stopped believing

“The community never stopped believing in the importance of this facility, and this award recognises what can be achieved when local passion is matched with strong partnerships and a shared vision.”

The recognition follows a $2.5m upgrade in which the main 33.3m pool was reconfigured into a 25m pool and a new 7m learn-to-swim pool, allowing for warmer water temperatures and an extended operating season.

Other improvements included installation of a disability hoist, a safer sand filtration system, relined pools, refurbished changing rooms and reception areas, and a new outdoor fitness area.

Funding came from council budgets

Nearly 5000 visits were recorded during the extended May-June operating period.

Bay Venues head of aquatics Matthew Strange said the recognition reflected both the quality of the upgraded facility and the collaboration behind it.

“What makes Dave Hume Pool special is that it remains a true community pool while benefiting from the expertise, systems and programmes that help it thrive.”

The award also recognised the contribution of the Dave Hume Swimming Pool Trust and its volunteers,

who spent more than a decade fundraising, consulting with residents and advocating for the pool’s future.

A tribute

Trust chair Barbara Martin described the award as a proud moment after years of hard work. “This has been a long journey for the trust and the community, but people kept showing up and supporting the vision,” Martin said. “This award is a tribute to everyone who worked to ensure it remains a place where people can connect, learn and stay active for

generations to come.”

Dave Hume Pool assistant aquatic manager Nora Moeke said the facility’s community focus remained one of its greatest strengths. “We know many of our regular users by name, and locals often bring in avocados, limes and persimmons from home. That warmth helps the pool feel safe, welcoming and genuinely local.”

Bay Venues also enjoyed further success at the awards, with aquatic operations manager Mike Page named Aquatics Leader of the Year and the organisation’s “Sup Bro” staff engagement programme receiving a Merit Award for Aquatic Innovation – Operations.

Staff also presented at the national conference on topics including training, innovation, emergency response management, accessibility and inclusion, while a Bay Venues team competed in the National Pool Lifeguard Competition, including representatives from both Dave Hume Pool and Te Puke Memorial Pool.

Katikkati’’s toy libbrary committee desperatelly need ds new faces Katikati Toy Library is putting a callout to the community for volunteers to join its committee to keep the facility running smoothly.

The Katikati Toy Library committee runs the library behind the scenes – and is made up entirely of volunteers.

“We’ve had a few people leave our committee this year and we’re in desperate need of new volunteers to join up to help with roles,” toy librarian Sandy

Goode said. Goode said an extra four volunteers coming forward would help the committee regain its strength to keep the facility operating.

“Each volunteer would only need to give 2-4 hours per month to support the toy library. In particular, we need someone who would be able to slowly transition into the treasurer’s role.”

The job entails reconciling the library’s Xero accounts and processing about 15-20 transactions per month. “It’s not a lot of work but it just needs to be done

on a regular basis, such as monthly.”

Goode said this role might suit an older member of the community who has a few hours to volunteer their time and has some finance experience.

“But it could also suit someone younger with no experience – we are willing to train the right person for the role.”

Goode said the committee want the community to know that the toy library was financially stable – but its existence does depend on people volunteering to help operate it.

“Please, if people can come forward to help, we would really appreciate it.

Volunteering with us doesn’t demand a huge amount of time, it is more being able to help out in small ways on a semiregular basis.”

Fake bin tags will attract fines Hundreds of Western Bay households may be putting out rubbish without paying for it, prompting a council crackdown on fake pay-as-you-throw tags and a warning that offenders could face a fine of $200.

The warning comes as council figures show 195,500 PAYT tags were sold between October 2025 and April 2026, while 216,165 rubbish bins were collected during the same period, a difference of 20,665 collections, Western Bay of Plenty District Council said in a media release.

While the gap cannot be directly linked to fraudulent tags, council contractors have reported finding more reused and altered tags, prompting concerns about misuse of the userpays system.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council general manager infrastructure Brad Singh said the PAYT system was designed to encourage waste reduction while ensuring households paid only for the rubbish they produced.

“The idea behind PAYT is simple. The more waste you produce, the more you pay to dispose of it,” Singh said.

“It gives households a financial incentive to reduce what goes into the red bin and make use of recycling and food scraps services.

“We know the vast majority of people are doing the right thing, but using a fraudulent tag means someone is getting a rubbish collection without paying for it.”

The council said fraudulent tags had been discovered in several forms, including tags taped or stapled back together after use, photocopied tags, and tags recreated using similar coloured materials.

$200 fine

Residents caught using fake tags could face a $200 infringement fine.

The district’s kerbside collection service was introduced in 2021 and aims to divert around 1800 tonnes of material from landfill each year.

Singh said the PAYT model ensured the cost of collecting and disposing of household rubbish was borne by those using the service rather than ratepayers generally.

“PAYT is a fully user-pays service. It isn’t funded through rates, so every red-bin collection needs to have a genuine tag,” he said.

“When people use fake tags, everyone else ends up carrying the cost, which isn’t fair on those doing the right thing.

More monitoring

“We’re increasing our monitoring, and people should be aware that if a fraudulent tag is found, the address will be issued with an infringement.”

PAYT tags have a recommended retail price of $5.20 and are available from supermarkets, participating retailers, council libraries and service centres.

The council encouraged residents to use only genuine tags, saying the cost of a legitimate tag is far less than the potential fine and helps keep the waste collection system fair for everyone.
