Museum m to receiive $1m up Western Bay Museum will close its doors this Sunday to receive a sixmonth $1 million transformation that would not draw any ratepayer funding.

Museum manager Paula Gaelic said after 10 years of extraordinary growth, determination and community partnership, the museum would embark on the most ambitious chapter in its history so far. “The museum will undergo a comprehensive redevelopment and refurbishment,” she said. “This major initiative represents far more than a physical renovation – it is a bold investment in the future of the region, the community, and the diverse heritage stories shared within its walls and outside installations.”

Seven years

Gaelic said the journey for this transformation began seven years ago. “We started talking about it with hapū back then. Actively, we’ve been working on it for four years,” she said. “Two local hapū – Ngāi Tamawhariua from Te Rereatūkāhia Marae and Te Whānau ā Tauwhao from Otawhiwhi Marae at Waihī Beach – have been working with us on this project the whole way through. Ngāti Te Wai from Tuapiro Marae came on board in recent years.” Other key partners, which helped shape the visionary step, included Te Papa National Services Te Paerangi, Katch Katikati, Katikati College, Creative Bay of Plenty, Tourism Bay of Plenty, Western

Bay of Plenty District Council and Bay of Plenty Regional Council. Asked why the museum needed this transformation, Gaelic said it was responding to a demand from New Zealand’s education and tourism industries to tell New Zealand’s history in full – for its local community and wider Western Bay residents as well as international and domestic tourists. The transformation would herald a refreshed, modern visitor experience that

presented a more balanced, inclusive and engaging story of the region, Gaelic said. “It’s all about education [of our past] for everybody. Our tourists want to see Aotearoa’s history. Our educators – from schools to universities – they want us to tell New Zealand’s whole story from right back at the start through to today.” Gaelic said at the heart of the redevelopment was a commitment to authentic cultural representation. “Ongoing mahi (work) alongside Ngāi

Support Daffodil Day today! Daffodil Day is upon us for 2026 and Katikati’s Cancer Society fundraisers Glennis Sims and Monique Amor want to encourage the public to donate generously.

“Our daffodil bulbs are now located on private property on Woodlands Rd, thanks to the Darling family generously lending us space for them,” Sims said. “But this year, due to the weather, we won’t have as many as we usually do in flower for Daffodil Day,” she said. “We do have other places to go [to collect daffodils ahead of August 28]

– but we certainly won’t have a lot. It’s disappointing but there is not much we can do about the weather.” However, people could still give generously at local donation stations dotted throughout Katikati today, August 28, and tomorrow, August 29. Daffodil Day stations will be outside Katikati’s Woolworths, ANZ bank, The Busy Baker, Subway and Family Mart from 8am-2pm on August 28, the fundraisers said. On Saturday, August 29, two stations will be open from 9am3pm outside Katikati Woolworths and The Busy Baker. Sims said close to 60

volunteers would pick flowers and man donation stations this year. “The support is fantastic; we thank our volunteers.” Sims also thanked Andrew and Jo Darling for use of their land to grow daffodil bulbs for the annual fundraiser. “Without them, we wouldn’t have this fantastic area for good. Next year we hope more daffodils bloom here.” Each year, Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society of New Zealand’s major fundraiser. “All funds raised go towards cancer research,” Sims said.

“It is such a worthwhile cause to get behind.” She and Amor have resigned from the Katikati fundraiser – next year a new person will run it. Sims volunteered for five years while Amor had done about 15 years. “For Monique, it’s been a long haul,” Sim said. “But we’ll still be in the background to help.” Daffodils will be for sale for $5 per bunch on August 28-29 at the stations. Donations can also be made at the stands, or online at: www.daffodilday.org.nz.

Photoggrap phs have been shared of a sp pecialist contractor surveying Tauranga Harbour’s floor betw tween w Katikati and Matakana Island. Katikati Wastewater Treatment Plant discharges treated wastewater through an ocean outfall pipeline across the harbour, through Matakana Island, and out to sea. But the ageing pipeline has had several breaks in the past year, highlighting the need for a long-term replacement strategy gy. y According to Western Bay of Plenty tyy District

Council,, the plant’s dischargge consent exp pires in 2038, and council is required to confirm its preferred future direction by end of 2026. Council selected Brown Bros Drilling to do the two-week tw w survey as part of investigations into design and construction of a potential replacement of the existing pipeline, one of the options being explored. The work is part of the Katikati Wastewater Disposal Future Directions project. See more at: https://yourplace. westernbay.govt.nz/katikati-wastewater-disposal

Locals open Katikati’s first Reformer Pilates studio A Pahoia couple have created the first dedicated Reformer Pilates studio in Katikati to help residents nourish their health, body and wellbeing. Align Pilates NZ is locally owned by Graham and Claudia Goodwin. They opened the Katikati studio, at 13 Talisman Drive above the café, in May. “We wanted to offer the community a place where they can come to focus on improving their health and wellbeing in a supportive environment,” Claudia said. “We want to help people feel healthier and more youthful, or feel supported in strengthening their bodies as they get older.” Pilates was developed by the late Joseph H. Pilates, based on principles of controlled movement, strength and body awareness. Reformer Pilates is a low-impact exercise method performed on a specialised sliding bed machine called a ‘Reformer’. It uses a moving carriage and adjustable springs to create smooth, controlled resistance.

Target problem areas

“This enables muscles to lengthen and strengthen together, improving joint stability, coordination and body awareness.” Claudia said the Reformer machine enables people to isolate and target areas of their body with total control. “Whether you want a high resistance workout for muscle tone, or need to strengthen or support your body, or work

on rehabilitating problem areas, we can set the machines to customise your workout.” Claudia and three fellow instructors run classes between 8.30am and 6.30pm weekdays and 7.15am Saturdays, catering to people of all ages and abilities. “Beginners, intermediate and advanced classes are available, and we offer one-onone 50-minute sessions for all levels. We offer a mums and bubs class suitable for mothers from six weeks post-birth. This is gentle, supportive and designed to help rebuild core strength, improve posture and support recovery.”

Highly personalised

Each class is highly personalised with only seven people, allowing for precise guidance. Claudia has practised Pilates for nearly 30 years and began teaching in 2012. “It has remained my constant, guiding me toward mindful movement and a deeper connection to the body and inner self. Many clients come to me with muscle pain, imbalances, or postural challenges, or simply because they’ve heard Pilates is good for them. I’ve rehabilitated so many over the years, giving them back a functional, painfree life. This is my satisfaction.” She offers a deep, personalised approach. “I’m passionate about helping you reconnect with your body, understanding how it moves, where it compensates, and how to restore balance.” Claudia said the body is designed to work in harmony, yet over time certain areas take on more load, creating tension

Align Pilates NZ owner and instructor Claudia Goodwin has practised Pilates for nearly 30 years. Photo / Merle Cave and discomfort. “I pay close attention to each client, offeringg continuous guidance and corrections so you can move safely, correctly, and with confidence. “As the body finds better alignment, we feel stronger, more supported, and move more easily. This is why I love what I do, guiding people back to strength, balance, and overall wellbeing.” Claudia has run classes at her Home Reformer Studio for five years and mat classes at Ōmokoroa for more than 10 years – but opened the Katikati studio after her clients kept asking for it. “I’ve had doctors, midwives and osteopaths as clients – these people work in the health industry and they told me that Katikati needed a Pilates studio. Nothing like this was here.” Graham, who helps behind the scenes, said they invested in setting up Align Pilates NZ in Katikati because they wanted to help

boost the community. “We’re locals and are raisingg a family here and we wanted to support our own community by offering a local studio,” he said.

Connection

The studio has new, modern equipment, with a clean and calm feel so people could focus. “Reformer Pilates encourages people to stop, take notice and listen to their bodies. It makes you think about, what is your strength? What is your weakness? Why are you weak in that body part? Why do you have pain when you wake? It creates awareness of the connection between mind, body and wellbeing,” Claudia said. “It makes you feel young, refreshed and strong. It’s also addictive. Once you start feeling the benefits, you need it.” The couple thank their loyal clients and new faces for their support. “It’s why we do it!”
