Shuffle and vine!

Loud music, lots of vines and shuffles and loads of fun will ring from Katikati’s memorial hall this Sunday, as boot scooters from across the nation enjoy a Fundraiser Social.

The event, hosted by Katikati’s Mural Town Line Dancers club, is an annual

fundraiser for Katikati St Peter’s Church, where the group dance weekly, and the local Hato Hone St John ambulance service.

“It’s a lot of music, a lot of dancing and a lot of fun – it’s just lovely,” Plummer said. She got bitten by the line dancing

Free luncheon and company for those living alone Katikati Lions Club invites those who live alone in the community or outlying rural areas to a free luncheon in October.

The annual Lone Diners Luncheon, which offers a delicious warm meal and warm, welcoming company, is on Sunday, October 11, from 11am.

“Whether you’re looking to make new friends, share a few laughs, or enjoy a delicious meal in great company, this event is dedicated to bringing together members of our

community who live on their won,” Katikati Lioness Jo Hurne said.

“If you know a neighbour, friend or relative living alone who might enjoy an outing, please pass on this invitation to them – or offer them a ride to the event at Katikati War Memorial Hall on October 11 – we would love to see them there!”

Katikati Community Centre and Dementia Tauranga/Western Bay of Plenty is hosting a Forget Me Not Brunch fundraiser in Katikati next Friday, August 28, from 8am-10am.

The event will be held at the community centre and feature a yummy brunch, an old fashioned bake sale, a raffle and donations station. Entry is $10 each. Buy tickets direct from Katikati Community Centre at 45 Beach Rd. Funds raised will be given to Dementia Tauranga/Western Bay of Plenty for their work.

The park, located on Thompsons Track south of Katikati, is 87 hectares of council owned reserve in the upper hill slope catchments of the KaimaiMamaku Forest Park.

Open seven days a week, the park offers the public free use of mountain bike, equestrian and bush walking trails.

Nurse who cared for the late Erica Hume named A name-suppression order for one of the nurses responsible for the care of a 21-year-old student who died by suicide at a mental health ward has lapsed.

Erica Hume died in May 2014 at Palmerston North Hospital, a death Coroner Matthew Bates ruled as preventable and could have been avoided if staff had correctly followed policies and procedures.

He also found that staff were under pressure due to the high number of patients and that the ward’s physical environment wasn’t fit for purpose. A replacement ward opened last year.

During an inquest into the death in 2022, temporary name suppression orders covered healthcare workers. When the coroner’s ruling was released in June these orders lifted, except for one covering registered nurse Donna Jo-Anne Jones.

She was granted temporary suppression to allow her to consider an appeal against the coroner’s ruling against her application for suppression.

She had until July 31 to do this but the Coroner’s Court and the High Court have confirmed no application was received.

Erica Hume’s parents, Carey and Owen, said they were pleased to see the order lapse.

In a statement to RNZ, they said: “Open justice does require people to be named and applications for a permanent non-disclosure order should be declined

if there is truly to be embedded change in mental healthcare within New Zealand”.

Coroner Bates’ ruling declining Jones’ application for suppression said she cited interests of justice and personal privacy in arguing that her name should remain secret. The coroner has ruled the specifics of her argument are suppressed.

Jones, who could not be contacted, managed Erica Hume’s admission to the Palmerston North Hospital mental health ward, known as ward 21, on May 6, 2014, and nursed her that evening.

Erica Hume died the next day.

The coroner found that despite Erica Hume’s care worker giving a “detailed and diligent verbal handover”, Jones did not take on board the heightened risk of suicide.

She also failed to adequately review admission information in Erica Hume’s clinical file and record that information on admission documentation.

“These failures meant that from the time of admission to ward 21, Erica’s heightened risk of suicide ... went either unrecognised on the ward or, at the very least, the severity of her risk was not appreciated,” Coroner Bates said This affected the care Erica Hume received, including the levels of observation she was under, and the following shift wasn’t fully appraised of the situation.

activity, unable to do.”

Jones did not alone bear responsibility for Erica Hume’s death and no individual was singled out for criticism in his findings, the coroner said.

“The role she played occurred in the context of widespread systemic failings and resourcing shortfalls at ward 21, including prolonged staff shortages.”

Jones has been a registered nurse for almost 20 years and still works at Palmerston North Hospital.

Carey and Owen Hume said that after Erica’s death they encountered a hospital system “embedded with non-disclosure” and a “deep-seated expectation of nonaccountability”.

They said: “It is our opinion that accountability is a major factor in the examination of the care of Erica, and this includes the actions or inactions of all parties, staff and management. It is also our opinion that the purpose of having an inquest is to determine what happened and try to ensure that there is no repeat of the circumstances that

allowed it to happen.

“This means, too, that individual as well as collective responsibility and accountability must occur.”

They said that for too long it was assumed healthcare workers would receive name suppression because it would harm their therapeutic relationship with patients, which was a poor excuse.

“We firmly believe patients and families have the right to informed consent and knowledge of whom they are entrusting their care to.”

The Humes said there was public interest in naming Jones, and her not seeking to appeal against the coroner’s ruling could be a sign she was taking responsibility for her role in what happened - which they said wasn’t minor.

“This not a vendetta against a particular staff member. This is about wanting embedded change in the attitudes of staff and management within the mental health service.” Jimmy Ellingham of RNZ

Boot scooters descend to dance up a fundraising storm People from throughout the country will descend on Katikati this Sunday to boot scoot en masse in annual line dancing fundraiser that supports local organisations.

The Mural Town Line Dancers will host their Fundraiser Social on August 23 inside Katikati War Memorial Hall from 11am to 4pm. Proceeds will go to the local Anglican church and Hato Hone St John ambulance service.

Organiser Lurline Plummer, who is one four line dancing instructors alongside Patsy Spriggs, Lynne Sydenham and Jo Hurne, said last year’s event drew more than 120 people and she expected the same level of interest this time.

“We get people from all over: Auckland, Whitianga, Whakatāne, Rotorua, Matamata, Tauranga, Hamilton… people will travel for miles to line dance.”

The Fundraiser Social is about dancing, having fun and meeting new people, Plummer said.

“It’s complete line dancing. I make a programme and send it out in advance.”

It also supports two local organisations that gave their services to the Katikati community, Plummer said.

She has taught line dancing in Katikati for 18 years, after she started the hobby in 2003.

“My husband and I were square dancers, but he couldn’t dance the style any longer, so I wanted something to keep me in the community. Then I

thought, ‘What about line dancing?’

“There was no absolute beginners’ class in Katikati back then, so I started one in 2008 at Katikati’s St Peter’s Church.”

The first Fundraiser Social was held August 2013 at Katikati’s old Museum site on State Highway 2. Plummer had since invited line dancing clubs from throughout New Zealand to the event Because of increasing interest, Plummer shifted the event to St Peter’s Church the following year. Then the event outgrew that location. “We just got too many people for the space we had. It was a good problem to have,” she said. “So, we shifted it to the memorial hall in 2015.”

Mural Town Line Dancers has classes for all levels. Absolute beginners run Tuesdays 9am-10am and Thursdays 6pm-7pm at St Peters church. Dancers can stay on for an extra hour for a slightly higher level.

Wednesday classes run 9am-midday.

The first hour is Absolute Beginners, then Beginners, Improvers and Intermediate.

“Line dancing is a wonderful way to exercise the body and mind and lots of fun,” Plummer said.

Experienced leaders appointed to new Water Organisation Board Proven leaders with experience establishing and transforming some of New Zealand’s largest infrastructure organisations have been appointed to the Board of Tauranga and Western Bay’s new Joint Water Organisation.

Dr Keith Turner CNZM has been appointed chair, alongside directors Pat Dougherty and former Bay of Plenty politician Todd Muller.

Turner, experienced New Zealand energy-sector leader, was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2024 for services to the electricity industry.

Guide establishment

In a statement, Western Bay of Plenty District Council said Turner, Dougherty and Muller would help guide the establishment of the new entity on behalf of Tauranga City Council and the Western Bay council ahead of its planned start date of July 1 next year.

Two further directors would be appointed this year, or early 2027, to complete the board, the council said.

Collectively, the three appointees brought experience establishing, governing and transforming some of New Zealand’s most significant infrastructure and public service organisations, including Meridian Energy, Transpower, Chorus, Wellington Water, NZ Transport Agency, Priority One and Central Plains Water.

Their experience spanned water services, local government, organisational

transition, infrastructure governance and regional leadership.

Western Bay of Plenty Mayor James Denyer said the appointments marked an important milestone in the establishment of the new organisation.

Significant undertaking

“Creating a new organisation of this scale is a significant undertaking, and it’s important we have experienced leaders around the table from the outset,” Denyer said.

“Keith, Pat and Todd bring an exceptional mix of governance, infrastructure, water sector and regional leadership experience. Importantly, they have all played key roles in helping organisations navigate periods of significant change and establish themselves for long-term success. These appointments are another important step in the journey.”

Tauranga City Council Tauriko ward councillor and Water Organisation Joint Committee chair Marten Rozeboom said the appointments reflected a deliberate focus on finding people with the skills and experience needed to guide the organisation through its establishment phase.

“The board will play a critical role over the next nine months as the organisation begins to take shape and prepares for a go-live date of July 1 next year.

“These appointments give us confidence the organisation is starting with strong governance and a clear focus on delivering safe and reliable water services for our communities.”

opportunity to help establish a new organisation that would serve the people of Tauranga and the Western Bay for generations to come was both a privilege and a responsibility.

“I hope to use the experience in both governance and organisation start-ups I have acquired from many national initiatives for the benefit of the local community. As a local resident, I will be close to the action,” he said.

“There is a strong programme already in place and I’m looking forward to working alongside councils, tangata whenua, stakeholders and staff to help

prepare the organisation for a successful start in July next year.”

The newly appointed board would become effective from September 1 and was expected to hold its first meeting that month.

The Joint Water Organisation would be responsible for delivering water, wastewater and stormwater services across Tauranga and the Western Bay from July 1, 2027.

See the world through the eyes of children More than 100 people, including young families, friends and community members gathered at Katikati’s Art Junction on August 10 for the opening of an exhibition featuring local children’s artworks.

The Tūmanako – Children’s Artworks for a Peaceful World exhibition celebrates the hopes and aspirations of more than 100 local children and young people.

More than 80 artworks explore themes of peace, hope, inclusion and a world free from nuclear weapons, Katikati-based Tūmanako committee member Darinee Turnwald said.

“Tūmanako is a Māori word meaning ‘hope’, and the exhibition gives children and young people an opportunity to express their vision for a peaceful world through art,” she said.

The August 10 ceremony began with a performance by Katikati Primary School’s Kapa Haka group, who welcomed participants and helped open the event.

Western Bay of Plenty Mayor James Denyer spoke of the importance of hope at a time when conflict continues in many parts of the world.

“It’s amazing to see all your smiling faces here today. Tūmanako means hope and we really need that in the world at the moment,” he said.

Reflecting on the continuing presence of war, Denyer said he hoped people could find ways to resolve their differences peacefully. “Today is about the youth of Katikati and the Western Bay and being able to find joy and peace,” he said.

SGI New Zealand general director Kenric Ma spoke about the role each person can play in creating a more peaceful society.

“Peace is not something created only by governments or international agreements.

It begins with each of us – in our thoughts, actions and words, and in the way we treat the people around us every day,” he said.

Ma told the young artists that their artwork offered an important message to adults.

“Every child who has exhibited in this exhibition has something valuable to teach us,” he said. “Their artworks remind us that peace begins with empathy, respect, friendship and imagination.”

He thanked the children for sharing their hopes, saying their creativity and

sincerity were an inspiration and a source of hope for the wider community.

The exhibition was organised by the local SGI New Zealand group in collaboration with the Art Junction and local schools. The opening brought together children, families, schools involved in the exhibition and the wider

Katikati community.

“For the young artists, the exhibition provides an opportunity to have their voices heard,” Turnwald said.

“For visitors, the collection offers a chance to see the world through the eyes of children and reflect on the kind of future they hope to create.”

The Tūmanako exhibition is open daily at the Arts Junction until Sunday, August 23. Members of the public are encouraged to visit for free and view the children’s artwork.
