Award d at th he 2026 Hollid day Parkks New Zealand (HPNZ) Awards Dinner in Hamilton on July 30 after first claiming the Medium Park of the Year award.

The win has come as a shock to couple Belinda Rixon-Church and Peter Church, pictured, who purchased the business about six years ago with no

hospitallity or parkking-owning experience as the world was hit by Covid-19.

After a baptism by fire, the couple had worked hard day, day out with their team of 15 part-time staff to make the park, which sits on a council reserve, a welcoming place where visitors can enjoy an unplugged, old school

auth hentic Kiwi hollid daying experience.

“That’s been the vision the whole way along,” Church said. “We’ve just decided classic Kiwi flavour is something that resonates and we’re committed to that.”

Katch Katikati brings town wn together for 20 years Katikati’s promotion organisation is celebrating two decades of serving its community in muti-faceted roles to showcase everything that makes it such a special place.

Katch Katikati marked 20 years of existence on July 26, with the team cutting a cake to celebrate all the events, promotion and community development it had undertaken.

Katch Katikati general manager Jacqui Knight said while 20 years may sound like just a number, it represented so much more.

“It represents thousands of conversations, countless collaborations, community connections, late nights, big ideas, small wins and moments where people have come together to celebrate this town we call home,” she said.

“The reality is; 20 years is a huge achievement.”

Many event, promotion and community organisations had come and gone over the years, Knight said.

“Changing times, funding challenges, shifting priorities and the sheer amount of work required to keep a community organisation thriving means many have sadly fallen away.

“So, to still be standing strong after two decades is something Katch Katikati is incredibly proud of.

“The team is honoured to continue serving the community, creating opportunities for connection, supporting local businesses, promoting our town and bringing a little more fun and festivity into everyday life.”

Like all good birthdays, Knight said the whole team agrees on one thing: The best is yet to come.

Businesses to community

Katch Katikati was established in 2006 as a business-focused organisation created to support and promote Katikati’s Main Rd businesses.

“It grew from the need for a dedicated organisation that could connect local businesses, promote events, encourage visitors and advocate for the town,” Knight said.

Before it followed a long history of local organisations had worked to strengthen and support the community.

In 1937, the Katikati Progress League was formed to support local development before going into recess during World War II. In 1946, it was revived as the Katikati Chamber of Commerce, with J.E.B.

Warn as its first president.

By 1974, the organisation had re-emerged as Katikati Businessmen’s Association and Chamber of Commerce.

Then in 2006, Katch Katikati was created with a broader vision: supporting businesses while also promoting events, encouraging visitors, building community connections and helping make Katikati a destination.

The first coordinator was Tracey Cossey, with David Gardner as the first chair.

In 2007, Jane Burke took over as coordinator, and in 2008 Katch Katikati launched its website and introduced Business After Five (BA5) networking events, creating opportunities for local businesses to connect, collaborate and support one another.

Knight said, over time, Katch Katikati had grown from a business support group into a key community organisation, helping create events, experiences and connections that make Katikati unique.

“From festivals and celebrations to town promotions, visitor services, arts initiatives and community projects, Katch Katikati has continued to evolve alongside the town.”

But at its heart, the purpose remained the same: bringing people together.

The Arts Junction

Knight said one of Katch Katikati’s biggest milestones came in 2018 when the organisation transformed the town’s former library building into The Arts Junction.

What was once a building full of books became a creative hub for the community, providing a place for arts, culture, events, exhibitions, meetings and connection.

“The transformation was made possible through the support of many organisations, funders and community groups who believed in creating a dedicated space for creativity and connection,” Knight said.

Support came from organisations including TECT, Trillian Trust, Bay Trust, NZCT, Katikati Open Air Art, Katikati Community Board, Katikati Twilight Concerts, Katikati Theatre Group and Katikati Folk Club.

Knight said Katikati Theatre Group and Katikati Folk Club played an important role in helping establish The Arts Junction, contributing valuable equipment and support that helped create a space where performance, creativity and community could thrive.

Today, The Arts Junction is home to the town’s Visitor Information Centre, Carlton Art Gallery, Junction Theatre, retail space, and meeting and community rooms.

Looking ahead

Today, Katch Katikati continued to be the organisation that helped “bring our town together.”

“It promotes Katikati as a vibrant destination, supports local businesses, manages community projects, runs events and works alongside the many groups and individuals who make this community special.”

Katch Katikati’s vision is, ‘To have an active and creative community where locals love to live and visitors want to come back to’.

“Twenty years on, Katch Katikati is celebrating more than longevity. It is celebrating people.

“The volunteers who have given their time. The businesses who have supported initiatives. “The community members who have shown up. The visitors who have enjoyed what Katikati has to offer,” Knight said.

“Because ultimately, a town is not built by one organisation alone. It is built by people who care enough to get involved.

Here’s to the next chapter, because the best is still to come.”

Children create public art show for peace A free exhibition of artworks created by local youth to create a peaceful world is coming to Katikati for the first time.

Tūmanako! Children and Youth Art: Works for a Peaceful World will launch at Carlton Gallery inside The Arts Junction on Main Rd at 5.30pm on Monday, August 10 and open daily to August 23.

Organised by Soka Gakkai International of NZ (SGINZ), a Buddhist-based NGO for peace, culture and education, the exhibition will show work by children and youth aged up to 18 from Matahui, Katikati and Waihi schools.

Katikati-based Tūmanako committee member Darinee Turnwald said Tūmanako! – which means ‘hope’ – was first held in Wellington in 2015 and conceived in commemoration of Hiroshima Day, observed August 6.

“It has since grown into a nationwide exhibition, travelling to communities throughout Aotearoa, including Tauranga, Wairarapa, Hutt City, Auckland, Whakatāne, Christchurch, Timaru, Dunedin, and Queenstown,” she said.“It supports an inclusive Aotearoa where all lives are celebrated and a nuclear-free world.”

This is the fifth year the exhibition will be held in the Bay of Plenty. Previously hosted at Tauranga City Library local organisers have decided to hold it in Katikati this month and Pāpāmoa in September.

Pāpāmoa-based organiser Paul Johnson said Tūmanako! celebrated the creativity and optimism of local tamariki (children) and taiohi (young people).

“The exhibition encourages young

people to reflect on the causes of conflict and the importance of peace, compassion and understanding,” he said.

This year’s theme is “Kotahi te kākano whakaaro, he nui ngā hua o te rākau houhou rongo” which translates to “One seed of thought grows the forest of peace”.

“The theme recognises that even the smallest act of kindness or hopeful idea has the potential to grow row in into something that benefits an entiire community. Throu ugh various medium the young artists explore what peace means to them and the world they hope to inherit.”

Johnson said the Bay of Plenty exhibition continued to grow each year, providin ng children and d young peoplle an opportunityy to share their creativity while contributing too an important conversation about peace.

and division around the world, the exhibition offers a hopeful reminder that the next generation has an important voice in shaping a more compassionate future,” Johnson said.

He estimated 70-odd pieces of artwork would be on display in Katikati’s exhibition.

“Everyone is warmly invited to attend the opening celebration [on August 10], meet the young artists and enjoy this inspiring collection of artworks.”

The exhibition is

supported by the Peace and Disarmament Education Trust, NZ National Commission for UNESCO, Auckland University of Technology, and the Peace Foundation.

Associated organisations were the United Nations Association of NZ, UNICEF NZ and Commonwealth Youth NZ. Tūmanako! Children and Youth Art: Works for a Peaceful World is open daily from August 10-23 at The Arts Junction. Admission is free.

Waihī Beach Lifeguard Services is asking the W com mmunity to help protect lifesaving equipment afteer two public rescue buoys and a rope were rem moved from safety stations, including at Anzzac Bay. Pu ublic Rescue Equipment, known as PRE, wass recently installed at key locations along the coaastline from Waihī Beach to Bowentown and Anzzac Bay so members of the public can provide flottation support during a water emergency, particularly when beaches are unpatrolled.

Waihī Beach Lifeguard Services club chair W Donna Pfefferle said her organisation is asking peoople to leave the equipment in place and talkk to young people about its purpose and the potentially devastating consequences if it is misssing when needed.

Sh he said removing a buoy or rope may seem

harmless, but it could leave someone without access to critical rescue equipment when every second counts.

“We need the public’s help. Please report anything missing or damaged to Waihī Beach Lifeguard Services. We encourage anyone who knows where the missing items are to return them to the club, no questions asked.”

Each rescue buoy costs the club about $140 to replace, Pfefferle said. “As a charitable organisation, every dollar spent replacing missing equipment is a dollar that cannot be spent supporting our volunteer lifesaving service.

“These rescue buoys are specially designed for Surf Life Saving New Zealand and have very little practical use outside of a water rescue emergency.”

The equipment had already demonstrated its value, Pfefferle said. In February, 60 days after a rescue buoy was installed at Anzac Bay, off-duty surf lifeguard Josh Coombridge used it to assist an older swimmer in difficulty. Two other people attempting to help were also being drawn towards the channel, and the buoy provided vital flotation support while Coombridge helped all three return safely to shore.

Pfefferle said replacement equipment was being arranged and club volunteers would continue checking stations along the coastline.

Manaakitanga and connection behind NZ’s best holiday park Two geologists who bought a Western Bay holiday park with no experience as the world was hit by Covid-19 have won their industry’s highest honour six years after their baptism by fire.

Athenree Hot Springs and Holiday Park was named 2026 Holiday Park Supreme Industry Award winner at the Holiday Parks New Zealand (HPNZ) Awards Dinner in Hamilton on July 30. The park also claimed 2026 Medium Park of the Year at the event, which closed 2026’s three-day Holiday Parks NZ Conference & Expo.

Athenree Hot Springs and Holiday Park is owned by Peter Church and wife Belinda Rixon-Church and operated on council reserve land on Athenree Rd. The couple were not new to being recognised at the annual HPNZ event – their park won the Spirit of Hospitality Award in 2022 and 2024 and were finalists in 2023 and 2025 – but the supreme award came as a shock. “This one was quite a shock,” office manager Jackie Roach said.

“These guys were shocked because we were up against big parks.”

“It is gratifying that the hard work gets recognised, it is rewarding for the team, and it is humbling because there’s so many people I know who’ve put their heart and soul in their own businesses … in a way I almost feel guilty we’ve stopped someone else from having this chance,” Church said.

Judges said it was Athenree’s manaakitanga (hospitality, kindness, generosity, and mutual care) that stood out.

“Holiday parks are founded in connection with others, and this park goes beyond that.”

Humility and manaakitanga is shown in spades as you arrive at the park. After a warm welcome, Church, Rixon-Church and Roach talked to Katikati News – all while answering phones, taking inquiries, instructing staff and greeting everyone. “We’ve lived in Athenree since 2011, working as geologists for the mining company [at Waihi],” said Church, who met Rixon-Church while in Australia “at a job interview”.

Church said they swapped working in Australia for the Western Bay because they thought it was a good place to raise a family.

“We were always keeping an eye out for opportunities to become self-employed.”

Three days after lockdown

Church knew the former park owner, and the family purchased the business and were set to take over April 1, 2020. “Three days prior, the country went into lockdown,” Church said. “So yeah, bloody hell.”

Church panicked. “We thought we’d lost everything – because you didn’t know how deep the hole was going to be,” he said.

The couple kept working at the mine while the former owner kept staff on to run the park via the Wage Subsidy Scheme.

Customers included international tourists and campervanners stranded in Level 4.

The handover was delayed to May 28, Church said, and the couple got the keys three days before Queen’s Birthday – the first long weekend since the nationwide lockdown lifted to Alert Level 2 restrictions, where Kiwis, except for Aucklanders, could travel.

What ensued was a baptism of fire. “We had no on-boarding, no training,” Church said. “On the Saturday we had 170 people on-site,” Rixon-Church said.

“It was this tidal wave of people – everyone was free and they came. They were sick of being cooped up,” Church said. “They

because people are acknowledging that.”

Church said the location helps too. “We’re in a privileged location and with the support we’ve had.” The couple ooze friendliness and community spirit. Rixon-Church was tearful as she recalled the recent death of one of their semi-permanent caravan site stayers. She said they welcome all visitors with appreciation.

“We often say to customers, ‘We’re very grateful you have chosen to come here because you could go anywhere. Thank you for coming here – if you need anything let us know. We will look after you’.”

Education and wellness projects, local sports and recreation clubs and young scholars have all benefited, Church said.

The couple had also upgraded the park infrastructure, Church said. As a result he was called the ‘Janitor, Barista and CEO’.

Recent developments included installation of solar power to move towards a carbon neutral operation, relining the hot pools, refreshing amenities, reflooring buildings, adding cabins, kerbing, drainage, and rewiring the electrical supply into the park.

“A lot of money goes in the ground to keep things running,” Church said. “The unexciting things that people don’t see because with guest numbers increasing, we’ve had to upgrade the infrastructure to cope with demand.”

Church said pre-Covid the park attracted 800 people in winter and 18,000 people a year. “In July we had 2400 – which is a threefold increase from pre-Covid – and we’re pushing towards 30,000 people this year.”

For Church, staff were everything to the park’s reputation. “Nothing’s perfect here; it’s old school authentic Kiwi holidaying – that’s been the vision the whole way along.”

Different styles of parks appeal to different people, he said. “We’ve just decided classic Kiwi flavour is something that resonates and we’re committed to that.”

Un-plugged classic Kiwi fun

They don’t provide structured entertainment for families – instead they want visitors to enjoy making their own fun and memories.

“It’s un-plugged, off-your-device fun. We give you enough data to let your family know you’re alive. The rest of the time you have to switch off.” “Visitors can come here and stay, go kayaking, go the beach, and they get to come home and float in the hot pools – and they love it,” Rixon-Church said Church said the couple wom’t rest on their laurels. “We’ve got plans for more to come …

NEW GUIDE HELPS OLDER KIWIS TAKE CONTROL OF CONTINENCE HEALTH Continence challenges affect up to one in four older New Zealanders, yet they are often not discussed openly.

For some, concerns are accepted as part of aging yet can greatly impact confidence, independence, social connections, and overall wellbeing.

“This guide reflects our commitment by bringing together practical information, expert guidance, and support to help older people maintain dignity, confidence, independence, and wellbeing. We are incredibly grateful to receive funding to bring this resource to life.”

The CHT Aged Care Fund has provided a grant to Continence NZ to develop a new free guidebook designed to help older people and their families better understand and manage continence issues by providing practical, easyto-understand information and encouraging people to seek support when they need it.

The partnership also reflects the ongoing mission of CHT Aged Care Fund to invest in initiatives that enhance the growing elderly population and the aged care sector by empowering older people to make informed decisions about their own health and wellbeing.

By improving awareness and understanding, the guide strives to reduce the stigma often associated with continence problems, while reassuring older people that these issues are common, manageable, and with the right information and support, can improve to maintain their independence for longer.

An online survey by Continence NZ of over 670 people revealed that feeling embarrassed to talk about continence issues was the leading reason most people said they hadn’t reached out for help before.

“I meet people every day who assume that incontinence is inevitable with age”, says Hannah Orr, pelvic floor physiotherapist. “It is so important to get the message out there that although incontinence symptoms are more common as we age, there is so much that can be done”.

“Whether that is aiming for a complete cure, improving or managing symptoms so that everyone can thrive into older age without being limited by incontinence” Continence NZ Executive Committee President Dr Anna Lawrence, MBChB, FRACS (Urol) says the organisation is committed to empowering people affected by incontinence to thrive.

Feeling worried about continence issues is natural when it comes to older family members says CHT Care Homes Chief Executive Carriann Hall.

“We understand bladder and bowel health can be a delicate subject. This guide for older people is freely and easily accessible to help ensure no one feels embarrassed or isolated by continence challenges, and that everyone has access to the information and support they need to live well.”

CHT Care Homes established the CHT Aged Care Fund in 2019 with a dedication to continuous quality improvement and innovation, and its desire to support delivery of high-quality care across the entire aged care sector. Grants are given each year for projects across research, access to care, and workforce development.

The guide is available to download at continence.org.nz
