A new club in Katikati is offering youth the chance to learn a unique, fast-paced and selfrefereed sport.

Katikati parents Dirk and Karen Verbeek this year formed Katikati Ultimate Frisbee after their three children – Nathan, Natalie and Nicholas – were bitten by the ultimate frisbee

bug but found there was no local after-school outlet to hone their skills.

“We hope that the club will grow as people get to know and play the sport more,” said Karen, who is club president. “When people hear frisbee they think, ‘Oh anyone can chuck a frisbee’ but there’s actually a bit more to it.”

We shall remember them Gallaher in TV doco Katikati’s Anzac Dawn Service will go ahead as per usual tomorrow morning, April 25, with the community invited to gather to commemorate New Zealanders killed in war and to honour returned service personnel.

Katikati RSA president Trevor Gilbert said all are welcome to come and pay their respects at the Dawn Service, which begins 6am at the square in front of Katikati War Memorial Hall.

“The service assembly point is in Katikati Library Carpark at 5.45am to march on foot to the front of the hall,” said Gilbert.

After the Dawn Service, Gilbert said people can head to Katikati Bowling Club for a breakfast or “rum and coffee” to gather. “The parade normally finishes around 7am and we go straight to the bowling club.”

Gilbert said this year’s speakers would include Major Mike Buist from the Corps of Royal New Zealand Engineers (RNZE), along with Katikati College head girl Coby Taylor and head boy Mitchell Preston. “The students will give a five-minute address, and will say The Ode in both Māori and English.”

Katikati Concert Band will provide music for the occasion, with member Jack Harray to be on the bugle to perform The Last Post.

In his absence, Gilbert said this year Katikati Bowling Club president Bryn Gradwell – a former Royal New Army Medical Corps Lieutenant Colonel – would the lead the event on the day.

Katikati’s legendary ruggby player and war veteran n David Gallaher is the focus of a documentaryy to air on television thiss Anzac Day, April 25.

From Field to Front is about Gallaher, the first All Black Captain who died serving New Zealand in World War I, and will screen at midday on TVNZ Z 1, Anzac Day, at noon.

According to Western Bay of Plenty Community The 1905 All Blac Archives, Gallaher was captain Dave Gal ks rugby laher, born in Ramelton, Ireland, in World War I. Pho who died to / Supplied on October 30, 1873.

“David came to New Zealand with his family on boa d tthee Lady ady Joce y board Jocelyn in 1878.

“He lived in Katikati until 1889, when he moved to Auckland. He is best known as the first Captain of the All Blacks, first called The Originals,” the archives said.

Gallaher was fatally wounded in 1917 at the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium, the archives said.

In Katikati, the Gallaher Family Mural is on a classroom’s exterior at Katikati Primary School, where David attended what was known as No 2 School where his mother Maria Gallaher was his first teacher, said Katikati Primary School caretaker Steve Graveson, who co-authored a 140-year history of Katikati Rugby Football Club.

Graveson said the documentary was created by Jude Dobson.

“There will be footage from Katikati in the documentary,” Graveson said. “For those interested it will be worth watching.”

Unique sport flying high in Katikati A Katikati family is sharing their passion for a fast-paced and selfrefereed sport by starting a club in town for youngsters to enjoy.

The Verbeek family are behind the recent formation of Katikati Ultimate Frisbee, which ran a youth tournament and family fun contest in Term 1.

Parents Dirk and Karen Verbeek have seen all three of their children grow a passion for ultimate frisbee – but with no local afterschool outlet to hone their skills.

Until Katikati Ultimate Frisbee – or KKFU as it’s known – began. “We’re only about twoodd months old now,” said Karen Verbeek, who is club president.

Fast-paced, non-contact

According to the sport’s national body, New Zealand Ultimate (NZU), ultimate frisbee is a fast, non-contact team sport combining elements of netball, soccer and American football, played with a 175g flying disc. Governed by NZU, it focuses on self-officiating and ‘Spirit of the Game’ sportsmanship.

Karen said her son Nathan Verbeek was introduced to ultimate frisbee by Katikati College teacher Peter Besley as a Year 9 student two years ago. “He basically went from there and never turned back. He started playing with the Mount club in the second half of the beach frisbee season a year ago,” said Karen. “Then my daughter Natalie started playing indoor frisbee the middle of last year at the Mount, and my younger son Nichola also started playing.”

Nathan is now a Year 11, Natalie is Year 9 and Nicholas is a Year 5 at Katikati Primary School. “There is not a lot of opportunity for them in Katikati to grow for their sport,” Karen said.

“So we started travelling to Tauranga and building our netw twork w with clubs all over and thought that if we wanted more local

opportunity for our youngest we’d launch the club and see if local young people would be interested so by the time Nicholas gets to intermediate age the local club will be up and running,” Karen said.

Dial up interest

“We hope that the club will grow as people get to know and play the sport more.”

Karen said Katikati had produced a few frisbee athletes in the past – former Katikati College students Luke Spurr, brothers Sean and Daniel Nicholson and Ayrton Hodson, went to Poland in August 2022 to represent New Zealand at the World Youth Frisbee Championships.

However momentum of local frisbee had waned – and Karen wanted to turn that around. “The college has a team that is on and off, but this year it didn’t quite have enough players to send to the senior schools’ national tournament, which had 30 schools participating.”

For Term 1 KKFU club ran a free-entry Kings & Queens Inter Club Competition on Wednesday afternoons at the college’s back field. The same night a four-versus-four free Family Brawl was held at Moore Park.

Social indoor, youth outdoors

The club is now hosting a priced Autumn Buzz Social Indoor event at Katikati War Memorial Hall 6.30pm-9pm Tuesdays from April 21-June 30. The event is a relaxed, all welcome indoor frisbee season designed for players of every level and age, said Karen.

Free grass frisbee will continue year-round on the back field at the college from 3.30pm5pm for students aged 9-17 of all experience levels. “When people hear frisbee they think, ‘Oh anyone can chuck a frisbee’ but there’s actually a bit more to it,” Karen said.

Ultimate frisbee has beach, grass and indoor formats – and team numbers could vary.

running while in possession of the disc, but may pivot and pass to any receiver on field.

Players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out of bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than 10 seconds.

Self-refereed, with spirit

What Karen likes most about ultimate frisbee is the uniqueness of it being selfrefereed, governed by the Spirit of the Game which is written into the rules.

This means players are responsible for adhering to and overseeing the rules themselves, a tradition of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on players rather than referees.

“You [the player] have to make decisions on the field and do this by talking it out with fellow players – it’s a great opportunity for self-development,” she said.

Youth learn leadership, self-awareness, communication, negotiation and mediation skills, she said. “At the end of the game there is a spirit circle where the two teams stand together and talk about everything that went well and teams congratulate each other on their strong points – they don’t focus on mistakes or negative stuff.

“It’s very much about knowing the rules and uplifting other people.”

New, different

Katikati youth have a new sport club in town – ultimate frisbee.

Out of a sport-packed landscape for youth, what appeals to the Verbeek kids about ultimate frisbee? “I think it’s something

different and new and a sport they can all play together, not like other sports where you need to be a specific age to play as a team.

Our kids get to play together and develop a great bond. I saw this new bond during the family brawl in Term 1,” Karen said. “And once you get to know ultimate frisbee, it gets quite addictive,” Karen said.

Her long-term goal is to introduce ultimate frisbee to primary-aged children “so by the time they go to college they choose it as their number one sport”.

“Ultimate frisbee is in most places in the world from the age of 14 upwards. In NZ, the Waikato clubs have grown significantly where they now have their own intermediate schools’ competition in Terms 1 and 4,” Karen said.

“The goal is to bring that to the Western Bay of Plenty, where school teams participate like they do in rugby, hockey, netball etc weekly during Terms 1 and 4 for grass and Terms 2-3 for indoor and not just one or two tournaments a year.”

Accessible, affordable

With participants only requiring one frisbee per team – and juniors allowed to play barefoot – ultimate frisbee is an accessible and affordable sport for families, Karen said.

“It’s one of the most, if not, cheapest sports you can do,” she said. “Membership fees are very cheap, if any. Our club has only charged for events held indoors to cover venue hire.

But we’re trying to keep it free for youth.”

Barry returns to his home on Main St – but without Jack After nearly one year’s absence, Katikati’s most iconic sculpture has been reinstalled on the town’s Main St – but without his beloved companion.

Barry, the Relaxed Typical Kiwi Bloke was removed from his chair outside the Arts Junction at 36 Main Rd on April 28 last year after he was damaged by a vehicle accident the night prior.

What followed was a lengthy, complicated process by Barry’s guardians – Katikati Open Air Art, which take care of the town’s murals and sculptures – to claim insurance for the damage and work with a sculptor to travel from the South Island to repair him.

Katikati Open Air Art committee member Steve Graveson previously told Katikati News that while Barry’s seat had been fixed locally, Barry had to be repaired by sculptor Donald Paterson, who now lived at the bottom of the South Island’s West Coast.

“It has been difficult for Donald to really give a true cost until he sees the total damage both inside and out,” said Graveson last November, when the town heard Barry wouldn’t be back for Christmas.

After spending the festive season “on holiday” in Graveson’s shed, Barry was towed along Main St last Friday and returned home. “Donald and I worked together to get him repaired. He was about here for about three to four days,” Graveson.

“Barry’s right arm was all broken underneath, so we had to restrengthen and repair it. We also touched up a few

other bits and pieces and he got a new coat of paint.”

People had suggested using someone else to repair Barry but Graveson said: “Unless you know how he’s made and what he’s made up of you could destroy the integrity of Barry, so we’ve got to work with Donald”.

Warning: Scammers pretending to be police in Western Bay of Plenty phone calls Western Bay of Plenty police are investigating a series of scam phone calls in which residents have been contacted by people falsely claiming to be police officers.

Acting Sergeant Gea Grilli is urging the community to remain vigilant after 12 reported incidents since April 1.

In the scam, victims receive a call from an unknown number, with the callers presenting themselves as police officers and offering personal or procedural details to appear legitimate.

The scammers claim police are running an undercover operation into fraudulent banknotes circulating from major banks in the Tauranga area.

Victims are instructed to withdraw cash for “evidence purposes” and are given a script to use if bank staff question the withdrawals.

The callers then ask for several banknote serial numbers, claiming they are needed to verify whether the money is counterfeit. A fake insurance reference number is also supplied.

To complete the scam, a courier is sent to the victim’s home to collect the withdrawn cash.

“This is a scam, and no legitimate police officer will ever ask you to hand over money for any reason,” Grilli said.

Verify caller’s identity

Police advised anyone receiving a suspicious call to take steps to verify the caller’s identity.

People should ask for the officer’s full name, station and badge number, then hang up and contact police on 105 to confirm whether the officer is genuine.

Grilli said older residents were being particularly targeted, and police urged people to speak to their elderly or vulnerable family members and friends to make them aware of the latest scam.

A hot rod show to be held this month to raise funds for Katikati Volunteer Fire Brigade has been shifted to next month.

The Summerset by the Sea Hot Rod Display, to be hosted in association with Henry’ss Rod Shop, will now be held at the Park Road Reserve from 9.30am-2.30pm on May 10.

Summerset by the Sea village manager Casey Hope, who is also a member of the Katikati Volunteer Fire Brigade, said the show would now go head Sunday, May 10.

Hope said the Park Road Reserve was chosen as the event’s location to make it easy for Summerset residents to stroll across from the village and enjoy wheeled beauties of all sizes, shapes and colours.

“We want them to be able to come and have a look,” Hope said. “We have more than 250 residents with our village, who we know will really enjoy such an outing.”

People can expect to see classic cars and hot rods of all makes and models – including an appearance by Katikati Volunteer Fire Brigade’s old fire truck. “So please mark May 10 as ‘busy’ in your calendar,” Hope said.
