“WaitangiDaytomeisimportant becauseitshowsboththebeginning andourresponsibility,”saidBrown. “Itremindsusofwherewecome fromandwhatweshare,aswe reflectonourhistory.It’salsoa timetocelebrateTeAoMāori,our cultureandtheconnectionthat bringsustogether.”
BrownsaidshebelievedWaitangi DayissomethingallKiwisshould cometogetherandbeinvolvedin.

Since2025Brownhasworkedat WesternBayMuseum,whichhosts TeRāoWaitangiWhānauFestival initsmahi(work)toraiseawareness ofKatikati’searlyhistoryofboth MāoriandEuropeans.
“Ijumpedonas,Iguess,awahine toa(strongwoman)ofourmuseum andit’sbeenreallyspecialbecauseI
feellikeasayoungwahine(woman) peoplecantalktomefromboth perspectivesandsharetheirthoughts andfeelingsandnotfeelpressured.”
Toker,whohaslivedinNamibia, theUK,andnowNewZealand, saidWaitangiDayisveryspecial.“I reallyadmireitfrommyexperiences livinginanumberofdifferent countries.I’veneverseensucha wanttobroadenandspreadthat [inclusiveness]amongeveryone.”
Tokersaidothercountriescould beveryone-sidedinthewaythey markedtheirhistory“orit’sdone withoutmuchcareorinterest…soI reallylikehowinNZyouallseem soopentoleteveryknowaboutthe country’shistory”.
“WaitangiDayisabeautiful experience,inmyopinion,”said Uilou.“It’snicetolearnmoreabout thehistory,evenforthosewhocome totheeventtolearnmoreaboutwho theMāoripeopleareandwhatthey’ve beenthrough,andeverythingthat everyone’sgonethroughovertheyears, tobringustothis[present]day.”
Small,local,grassrootseventsacross thenationonWaitangiDay–such asKatikati’s–massivelysupports therevitalisationofTeAoMāori, saidBrown.
“Withthemwecanbringback theuprisingofTeAoMāori,the recognitionofitandthefactthat therewasawrongdoingthatlots ofpeoplearen’tlearningabout,or choosenottolearnabout,butthat isimportanttoknowabout.”

WesternBayMuseummanager PaulaGaelicsaid2025wasthefirst timeherorganisationhadhelda festivalonWaitangiDay,andthere wasreasoningbehindit.
Shewantedmorelocalresidents toattendtheeventbymakingit moreaccessible,appealingand comfortable.“Wewantedsomething ratherthanaformaldawnservice, whichwasabitrestrictivebecause somepeopledon’tlikedawnthings orformalthings.

“SomehaveneverworkedwithMāorior gottoknowaMāorifamily,sowhenyou hostagrassroots-levelfestivallikethis–everybodythatcomesistherefortheright reasonforastart.
“Then,oncetheculturalperformancesstart, youjustcan’thelpbutletthewairua(thespirit) takeover.Lastyearwasjustthisbeautifulevent whereeverybodywassohappy.”
