Assuch,KatikatiNewshasasked threelocalteens,whowillperform attheevent,whatWaitangiDay meanstothemandwhythey supporttheevent.

Ourresponsibility

Tia-MaraeaBrown,18,(NgaiTe Rangiiwi,NgāiTamawhariuaand Tauwhaohapu,TeRereatukahiaand Otawhiwhimarae),ispartofband KatikatiTrio,withManaseUilou, 17,whohasPacificIslandsheritage, andInyamokaToker,18,originally fromNamibia,whomovedtothe UKthenNewZealand.

“WaitangiDaytomeisimportant becauseitshowsboththebeginning andourresponsibility,”saidBrown. “Itremindsusofwherewecome fromandwhatweshare,aswe reflectonourhistory.It’salsoa timetocelebrateTeAoMāori,our cultureandtheconnectionthat bringsustogether.”

BrownsaidshebelievedWaitangi DayissomethingallKiwisshould cometogetherandbeinvolvedin.

“It’simportantforeveryonelivingin NewZealandtoknowourhistory isn’tit?Imeanifyou’renotgoing tolearnaboutit,what’sthepoint?I feellikeeveryNZershouldbeaware ofthemulticultural,diversityand historythatmakesupNZ.”

Since2025Brownhasworkedat WesternBayMuseum,whichhosts TeRāoWaitangiWhānauFestival initsmahi(work)toraiseawareness ofKatikati’searlyhistoryofboth MāoriandEuropeans.

“Ijumpedonas,Iguess,awahine toa(strongwoman)ofourmuseum andit’sbeenreallyspecialbecauseI

feellikeasayoungwahine(woman) peoplecantalktomefromboth perspectivesandsharetheirthoughts andfeelingsandnotfeelpressured.”

Toker,whohaslivedinNamibia, theUK,andnowNewZealand, saidWaitangiDayisveryspecial.“I reallyadmireitfrommyexperiences livinginanumberofdifferent countries.I’veneverseensucha wanttobroadenandspreadthat [inclusiveness]amongeveryone.”

Tokersaidothercountriescould beveryone-sidedinthewaythey markedtheirhistory“orit’sdone withoutmuchcareorinterest…soI reallylikehowinNZyouallseem soopentoleteveryknowaboutthe country’shistory”.

Beautifulexperience

“WaitangiDayisabeautiful experience,inmyopinion,”said Uilou.“It’snicetolearnmoreabout thehistory,evenforthosewhocome totheeventtolearnmoreaboutwho theMāoripeopleareandwhatthey’ve beenthrough,andeverythingthat everyone’sgonethroughovertheyears, tobringustothis[present]day.”

Small,local,grassrootseventsacross thenationonWaitangiDay–such asKatikati’s–massivelysupports therevitalisationofTeAoMāori, saidBrown.

“Withthemwecanbringback theuprisingofTeAoMāori,the recognitionofitandthefactthat therewasawrongdoingthatlots ofpeoplearen’tlearningabout,or choosenottolearnabout,butthat isimportanttoknowabout.”

Moreaccessible

WesternBayMuseummanager PaulaGaelicsaid2025wasthefirst timeherorganisationhadhelda festivalonWaitangiDay,andthere wasreasoningbehindit.

Shewantedmorelocalresidents toattendtheeventbymakingit moreaccessible,appealingand comfortable.“Wewantedsomething ratherthanaformaldawnservice, whichwasabitrestrictivebecause somepeopledon’tlikedawnthings orformalthings.

“Wedecidedtogiveoureventamore festivalapproachandIalwaysthink kai[food]andwaiata[song]bring peopletogether,anditkindoflevels everyoneout–especiallymusic.”

Surprisingly,Gaelicsaidmany KiwishadneverseenaliveMāori

culturalperformance.Herkaupapa(vision) wastochangethat.

“Ouryoungergenerations,becausecultural performancestakeplaceatschoolthesedays, theyseeitregularly.Butforalotofolder people,evenmiddle-aged,unlessthey’vegone toRotoruaorgrownupwithalinktoaMāori community,they’veneverhadtheopportunity.

“SomehaveneverworkedwithMāorior gottoknowaMāorifamily,sowhenyou hostagrassroots-levelfestivallikethis–everybodythatcomesistherefortheright reasonforastart.

“Then,oncetheculturalperformancesstart, youjustcan’thelpbutletthewairua(thespirit) takeover.Lastyearwasjustthisbeautifulevent whereeverybodywassohappy.”

Theinclusive-positivevibesmixwasa successfulrecipetoreachpeoplewhowouldn’t otherwisegatheronWaitangiDay,Gaelicsaid.

“Withourcommunities,wemakethevibefor theday,”saidGaelic.“It’sjustadayofbeing,” saidBrown.“It’snottooheavy,”saidToker.

“It’sinthemoment,”Gaelicsaid.“Theother sideisthatwedoeverythingonashoestring. WedogetfundingfromtheKaupapaMāori eventteam,butstillit’satightbudget,yetour communityjumpintohelp.Ourlocalfire brigadeofferson-sitefirstaid.Anearly childhoodeducationcentrehasofferedtorun asunblockstation.Ourstagemanager,sound technicianandmainacthavereducedtheir fees.”Brownsaidoverallthedaywasabout

ensuringeveryone–ofallagesandwalksof life–feltcomfortabletocomealong“andto makeastartontheirjourneytoembracing WaitangiDayandlearningmoreaboutour country’shistory”.

“I’msoexcitedtoseetheturnout.Iknow Paula[Gaelic]hasworkedsohardonit,trying toexceedexpectationsandI’mexcitedtosee whoembracestheday.”

Thisyear’sfestivalbegins11amatHaiku Parkwithamihi(officialopening)from kuiaandkaumatuaofNgāiTamawhariuaTe RereatukahiaMarae.

Fromhereadiverseline-upofculturalacts willperform–includingKatikatiCollege’s kapahakagroupTeKapaoUretarakiWharei, Tauranga’shigh-energyCookIslandsgroup andKatikati’sIndianculturalgroup,plus headlinerKingCool,adynamicpowerhouse triocoversbandfromtheWaikato.

Culturalinteractiveworkshopsandcraft activitieswillrunthroughouttheday, includingpoimaking,harakekeweaving,and Pasifikaleiandcrowncrafting.“Lastyear’s crafttentgotslammedsowe’vedoubledthe spacefor2026,”Gaelicsaid.

MayoralReliefFundtosupportweather-impactedWBOPresidents

WesternBayofPlenty residentsaffectedbylast month’sstormhaveuntil February15toseekhelp fromthedistrict’s MayoralReliefFund.

WesternBayofPlentyDistrict CouncilestablishedtheMayoral ReliefFundonJanuary29to supportcommunitiesaffectedby January21-22’ssevereweather.

Withaninitial$100,000 contributionfromcentral government,thecouncilcanoffer short-termfinancialassistanceto householdsandsmallbusinesses experiencingurgent,unmetneeds directlylinkedtothestorm.

The$100,000providedto WesternBayofPlentycame fromthegovernment’s$1.2 millionstormrecoverysupport, announcedforthesixcouncils mostaffectedbylastmonth’s storm.

WesternBayMayorJames Denyersaidthefundcomes atatimewhenmanyinthe communityarestilldealingwith theemotionalandpractical impactsoftheevent.

Thefundisdesignedto supportessentialneedsduring aperiodwheremanypeople

insuranceprocessesandsafety concerns,hesaid.

“Ourthoughtsarewiththe familieswhohavelostloved ones,andwithallthosewhose homes,propertiesorlivelihoods havebeenaffected,”Denyersaid.

“TheMayoralReliefFundgives usawaytoprovidepractical, compassionatesupportfor peoplewhoneedimmediate helpwhileourwiderrecovery continuestotakeshape.”

Hesaidmanyhouseholdsand smallbusinesseswerefacing unexpectedcosts–temporary accommodation,essentialitems, orurgentworkneededtosafely thefundprovidesapathwayfor

supportwhennootherhelpis immediatelyavailable.

Whatthefundcansupport: Temporaryaccommodation oremergencylivingcosts; essentialhouseholditemsthat areuninsuredorimmediately needed;urgentworktorestore safeaccesstoaproperty;and welfare-relatedneedscausedby displacementorsafetyconcerns.
