Lock your sheds and garages The Katikati township is being plagued by what is possibly a lone offender breaking into sheds and garages in both daylight and at night.

December 5: At 3.10pm a masked male was observed on CCTV breaking into a shed using a crowbar. An attempt was made to steal tools before the male tried to enter a house window but was disturbed and ran off. December 6: A garage was entered in Bransley Grove, Katikati, and silver cutlery and Christmas lights stolen. December 7: A garage in Heron Cresent, Katikati, was entered and two passports and a bat were stolen. December 7: A shed broken into at Clive Rd, Katikati, and two Husqvarna chainsaws and a Shindawai chainsaw were taken. December 8: A person was disturbed breaking into a shed at around 3.30am on Longmynd Drive, Katikati. A petrol can was stolen.

Arrestts and apprehensions

December 3: A 33-year-old Te Puna man was arrested at State Highway 2 at Minden after Police approached him in a vehicle. He was charged with assaulting a police officer and refusing to supply a blood sample. December 5: A 44-year-old Katikati woman was arrested and charged with assault after a fight involving several people took place on Main Rd, Katikati. A 40-year-old Katikati man was also charged with disorderly behaviour from the same incident. December 6: A 36-year-old Pāpāmoa Beach man was charged with driving with excess breath alcohol.

Students happy with new logo and houses Last Week Katikati News covered the launch of the college’s new logo, houses and motif designs. This week the paper talks to students who helped to design the new logo, motifs and new house system. Katikati College students who’ve been part of the process of creating their school’s new logo, houses and motif designs are overwhelmingly positive about the changes. Year 8 students Monty Groenewald, George Donaldson, Parker Airey and Riley Hannah said they think the logo is a simple design with lots of meaning that includes the Kamai Ranges. “We really love the new house names, colours and meanings,” they said. They also said they felt more connected to the new logo because they weren’t really aware of the meaning of the old crest. Year 9 student Rowan Sutherland said the new logo represented her school better and the changes that had been made at the school. She also liked the new logo because it reflected the Kaimai Ranges and Katikati “which is where I live”. “It also felt very good to be part of the design team and that I’ve made an impact on the school’s history.”

For Year 10 student Ella Taylor, she said a lot of thought had gone into the design. Taylor said she felt more connected to the new logo. “It

represents the school better.” Hannah-Marie Newman said she “liked how it showcased what our school is now”. She also loved the new house names because “they are related to what is around us”. The college’s 2025 head students Hannah Gourlay, Jack Harray, Rajveer Sania Kaur, and Charlotte Tanner – who were part of the focus group to create the new logo – shared their thoughts after working on the project throughout this year. “I really like the logo because I think it represents a lot of people throughout school and it’s showing off the diversity that we have, whereas the past logo – it didn’t really cover everyone in the school and make them feel seen,” said Tanner. Kaur said the new logo offered a truer reflection of students who attend and learn at the college today. “It’s also

From next year all students will be reshuffled randomly into new houses, Sutherland said. “As for uniforms – the college will sell its existing stock with the crest until it’s sold out and the new logo will be eased in. “So parents do not need to worry – they will not have to purchase uniforms next year unless they need to.”

Western Bay of Plenty libraries bring nature inside this summer

This summer, Western Bay of Plenty libraries are bringing the outdoors inside, with a line-up of fun, nature-inspired programmes and activities.

The theme for this year’s summer holiday programme is ‘Te Taiao’ (the natural world), which aims to foster a love of native wildlife through reading. “Nature themes are always very popular with tamariki (children). Books, stories and hands-on activities are a fun way to spark curiosity and grow their knowledge of Aotearoa’s unique wildlife,” said Western Bay of Plenty District Council’s customer services manager Valeta Duncan. “We have been running the summer holiday programme for 10 years and it’s hugely popular in our communities. Last year we had more than 400 registrations and we expect the same level of interest again this year.”

Activity booklets

Summer activity booklets are available now from libraries in Waihī Beach, Katikati, Ōmokoroa and Te Puke. Families are invited to register online at: libraries.westernbay.govt.nz or in person, before collecting an activity

booklet from their local library. The ‘Raumati Rauemi - Te Taiao’ activity booklet has a reading log for tamariki to record every 10 minutes of reading, and each hour they clock up earns an entry into a competition to win a prize. Six entries earn them a Summer Reader Certificate. The booklet also includes ‘Missions’, ranging from writing a nature poem, to making a musical instrument from natural materials. Tamariki can choose to do some, or all, of the missions, collecting stamps along the way. For Year 7-13 students, there is a Book Bingo! teen summer challenge where participants read books or complete activities that match descriptions on a bingo card to go into a prize draw. Challenges include writing a different ending to a book, listening to an audiobook and reading a book out loud to someone. Teens are invited to share their achievements on Western Bay libraries Facebook and Instagram pages (@westernbaylibraries). The holiday reading programmes will be rounded off with a summer party at the end of January. Parties will be held in Te Puke, Ōmokoroa and Waihi Beach, where certificates will be received. or Felt Kiwi Magnet – all you need are coloured pencils, scissors and glue to complete your critter.

Whether it’s a day at the beach, a backyard BBQ, or exxploring our parks and cycleways, lett’s make it a season of care – for each other and for the places we lovve.
