FromMonday,December15,to Sunday,December28,theprogramme willoffersomethingforeveryone,said KatchKatikatieventsmanagerKylie Watkins.Localgroupswilljoinforcesto transformthespace,withfestivedisplays fromKatikatiFloralArt,WesternBay Library,theCombinedChurchesand KatchKatikati.
Watkinssaidtheteamlooksforward tothistransformationeveryyear.“We loveturningourJunctionTheatreintoa festivespaceforeveryonetoenjoy,”she said.“It’saplacetosoakupthefeeling ofChristmasandalwaysputsasmileon everyone’sface.”

Thedesignswerelaunchedataspecial assemblyon December4.
PrincipalLousieBuckleysaidthecollege hadundergoneanexcitingjourneyto refreshitsvisualidentity–tomovefrom itslong-standingschoolcresttoanew tohu(logo)“thatbetterreflectswhowe aretoday,andwhoweaspiretobeasa learningcommunity”.
“Ourpreviouscrestwasdesignedin 1955,nearly70yearsago.Itssymbols reflectedtheoriginsofKatikati’searly Europeansettlers–theredhandofUlster, theshipsLadyJocelynandCarisbrooke Castle,thepinetreesrepresentingkauri milling,andswordssymbolisingthe pursuitofknowledge,”Buckleysaidat theassembly.

Thecollegebeganaprocessof consultationwithstudents,staff,whānau andcommunitymembersin2024.
“Themajorityofthosesurveyedfelt thattheoldcrestnolongerreflectedthe college’sidentity,withstrongsupportfor developingsomethingthatacknowledged ourplace,ourpeople,andourvaluesin Aotearoatoday.
“Therewasalsoclearencouragement toensureTeAoMāoriandlocal environmentalconnectionswerepartof anynewdesign,”Buckleysaid.
“Fromthatkōrerocameournewtohu, createdin2025torepresentourvision:

Thecollegecontractedlocaldesign company,Paulownia,toworkwithafocus grouptodevelopthenewtohu.
Thegroupwasmadeupof2025’shead studentsHannahGourlay,JackHarray, RajveerSaniaKaur,andCharlotteTanner; collegestaffmembersShaniBennandKate Sutherland;BoardofTrusteesmember VictoriaDeyer;andBuckley.PlusPou Arahi–representativesfromthethreelocal marae–werealsokeptinformedofthe process.
Buckleysaidonekeyaspectofthedesign briefwasthenewtohuhadtoreflectthe KaimaiRanges.“Nomatterwhereyou areinKatikati,thesemaungashapethe skyline–afamiliarbackdroptoourdaily livesandareminderofourconnectionto thisplace.”
Values
Thedesignalsohadtocapturethe college’svalues–Whanaungatanga (relationships),Manaakitanga(kindness andrespect),andKaitiakitanga (guardianship)“andourconnectiontothe naturalenvironmentthatsurroundsus”.
Thecompletedlogo’sfourinterwoven layerssymbolisethesevalues“andtheunity ofourfourhouses,”saidBuckley.“The wovenbandsreflecttheinterconnection betweenpeople,knowledge,community, andenvironment.
“Themeetingpointsrepresentthe maungaandthecollegeasameetingplace –aspacewherelearningandrelationships intersect.Eachlayeralsorepresents anelementofourlocalenvironment, stretchingfromtheKaimaiRangestothe moana–thesun,mountains,land,and water–showingtheflowofconnection thatdefinesKatikati.
“Thespacesbetweenthelayersrepresent Va–therelationalspacebetweenpeople –aconceptthatrecognisesthestrengthof ourcommunityliesnotjustinindividuals butintherelationshipsthatconnectus,” Buckleysaid.
“Soinbrief,thetohurepresentsour collegeasawhare,ahouseoflearning –itrepresentstheconnectionsbetween people,andtheconnectiontoourlocal environment.”
Asetofaccompanyingdesignmotifswere designedbyagroupof35studentsacross allyearlevels.“Thesedesignsrepresentthe diversityofourschool.Theyreflectour Māori,Pasifika,IndianandCelticheritage,

ThenewhousesareMountain/Maunga withthecolourred;River/Awawithgreen; Beach/Tātahiwithyellow;andSea/ Moanawithblue.“Thesenewnames andcolourscelebratetheinterconnected journeyofourplace–fromthepeaks oftheKaimaiRangestotheocean thatshapesourcoastline–andreflect thecollege’songoingcommitmentto Whanaungatanga,Manaakitanga,and Kaitiakitangaineverythingwedo.”
Thenewhousenamesdon’terasewhat’s gonebefore,Buckleysaid.“Thecrestwill stillbeseeninmanyplacesaroundour kura(school).
“Thehousenameswillstillbeontrophies andcups.Wehonourthosewhohave gonebefore,andthischangeinnoway diminishesthemanaofthat.”
Shesaidthenewtohuandhousesystem representanewchapterinKatikati College’sstory–“onethathonoursour pastwhileembracingafuturegrounded inconnection,inclusivity,andplace”. “Together,westepintothisnewchapter withpride,withpurpose,andwitha
sharedsenseofresponsibilityforthe generationstocome.”
ValarieUilouofTeRūnangaoNgāi Tamawhariua,Katikatidistrict’shealth andsocialservicesprovider,saidthe schoolhaddoneafabulousjobofcreating somethingthat’sinclusive,diverse.“It includeseverythingwithinourcommunity –includingourtaiao(environment),Ilove it,”shesaid.
OtawhiwhiMaraechairReonTuanau saidthelogo,housesandtheirnewdesigns lookmīharo(amazing).“Itreallycaptures whowearetoday.Peoplearealotintune withtheenvironmentthesedaysand protectingit–soIthinkthelogodepicts thisandshowcaseswherewe’reatnow.” Hesaidtheproject’sjourneyhadbeenallinclusive–“everyone’shadaparttoplay”. BuckleythankeddesignteamPaulownia fortheirworkontheproject,CoastSigns, No1Signs,andallthosewhowerepartof theprojectduringthelasttwoyears. Fromnextyearallstudentswillbe reshuffledrandomlyintonewhouses, focusgroupmemberKateSutherlandsaid. “Asforuniforms–thecollegewillsellits existingstockwiththecrestuntilit’ssold outandthenewlogowillbeeasedin.So parentsdonotneedtoworry–theywill nothavetopurchaseuniformsnextyear unlesstheyneedto.”
