AKatikatitechnologystoreowner haslost$74,000worthofstock fromanovernightburglarylast weekend–andhedidnothave insurance.
Theburglarycomestwomonths afterhisKatikatihomewasenteredby intruderswhileheandhisfamilyslept overnight,promptinghimtoquestion whetherhestillwantstoliveinNew Zealand.
iFixedLtdownerChamaraPunchihewage saidhissecuritycamerascapturedvideo footagewithaudioofthreepeoplebreaking intothestoreonthesecondfloorofCherry CourtonMainRd,Katikati,at1.58amon Saturday,November8.
“Theytookeverythingwithin10minutes –thewholeburglarytook15minutes,” saidChamara–whoisinknowninthe communityasChama.
Threeyears,notrouble
TheSriLankanhaslivedinNewZealand for16years,includingmorethaneight yearsinKatikati.iFixedLtdhasbeen operatinginKatikatiformorethanthree years,Chamasaid.
“Wehavealotofseniorcitizenshere thatwehelpwithtechnologyissues.We attendcalloutstotheirhomesandwealso repairanytypeofdevice–mainlymobile phonesandlaptops.There’salotofscams happeningandbankssendpeopletousso wecancleantheirdevicesandgivethem instructionsonhowtobesafeonline.”
Whiletheshophadn’tbrokenintobefore, ChamasaidhisKatikatihousewasentered twomonthsago.“Ihaveatwo-year-old daughteraswell–sotobehonestwe’re reallyafraidtostayinNewZealand.We’re thinkingwhatwe’regoingtodonext–becausewhenpeoplearebreakinginwhile you’resleepingitisveryscarytolivelike that.”
Chamasaidthethreeoffenderswhobroke intohisstorestolemoststockhehadfor saleonshelves.
Customers’gearunaffected
Chamasaidnoneofhiscustomers’ equipmentwasstolenbecauseitwaslocked awayinasafe,whichwasnotaccessed. “Noneofourcustomerswereaffected.”
Chamasaidtheoffendershadcome throughthebackentrytoCherryCourt, whichunfortunatelywasunlocked.“They hadacarparkednearthetyreshop.They walkedthroughthebackdoorandupthe stairstoourshopentryandsmashedthe bottompaneofglassonthedoor.”
Anotherranchsliderwasalsosmashedin theburglary.“Theycameinsideandtook everything–allourmobiledevices,laptops andaccessoriesthatwehadforsaleonour stands.”
Insuranceblip
Thedamagetothebuildingwascovered bythebuilding’sinsurance.ButChamasaid $74,000worthofstockwasstolen–andhe didn’thaveinsuranceforit.
“LastMonday[November3]weopened anewiFixedbranchinWaihi.Sowhat happenedwaswechangedinsurance providerandcancelledtheold[policylast week]–andwewereabouttosignthe newpolicythisweek.Sothisperiod[when theburglaryoccurred]wecannotmake a[insurance]claim,”saidChama.“So basically,I’mlost.”
Chamasaidhehasfourpeopleworkingin iFixedKatikatiwhoalsohavefamilies“soI can’tjustcloseitlikethat”.“SoI’mthinking howtorecover–maybewewillstartonly offeringservicesandnotsellinganythingas wedon’thaveanythingtosellnow.”
Chama,whore-openediFixedLtd Monday,saidheandhisstaffhadchecked securitycamerarecordsforthelastfew months,andpeoplemovementsin-store.
Chamabelievedtheburglarywas committedbytwomalesandafemale.“We haveanaudiovoicerecordingtoo–sowe canhearamansaying:‘Youalrightbabes’so weknowoneoftheoffenderswasafemale andsomehowtheyareconnected.”
Chamaalsobelievedtheoffenderswere eitherlocals,orhadalocalconnection.“We havesomelittlecluesandwehavepassedall thisontothepolice.”
Chamasaidthemanypeopleinthe communityhadcalledandemailedhim andcommentedonaFacebookonposthe sharedoftheburglary.“Peoplearecaring andthinkingwearedoingsomethinggood
iFixedLtd–locatedonthetopfloorof CherryCourt–wasbrokenintoand burgledintheearlyhoursofNovember8.
forthecommunity.Wealsoknow[from securityfootage]thatDreamers[beauty cliniconJocelynSt]wasbrokenintothe samenight.”
Hesaidifanyoneknewanythingabout theburglarytocontactKatikatiPolice assoonastheycan.“Wearestillhoping thepolicemightbeabletorecoverthe equipment,becausethat’souronlyhope.”
DreamersdirectorSuzanneBullivantsaid offendersbrokeintoherbeautyclinicin theearlyhoursonSaturdaymorningby smashingaranchslider.
“[They]tookthetillbutnomoneywas inthetill.Wedon’thavemoneyonthe premisesanymore.”Theyalsomadea“hell aofmess”tocleanup,Bullivantsaidina Facebookpost.
Thisisthefifthbreak-inthebeautyclinic hadexperiencedinalittleovertwoyears–andthethirdsinceAugustthisyear.“[We believe]Thisguywasdifferentthanthelast twobreak-ins[thisyear].”

WesternBayofPlentydistrictcouncillor forKatikati-WaihiBeachRodneyJoycesaid thecouncilhadmorethan90monitored CCTVcamerasinoperationaroundthe Katikatidistrict,whichpolicehadaccessto. Joycesaidthecouncilhadjustadvertised fundinggrantswereavailableforthose who’dliketoapplyforfundstogetCCTV intheirarea.
“Sowe’reactiveinthatareabutthereis widerconversationtobehadastohowfar wegowiththat.”
Joycesaidbothstoreshadsecuritycameras andfootageofoffenderssohequestioned howimpactfultheuseofmoreCCTV wouldbe.HereferredKatikatiNewsto policetocommentfurther.
ANZPolicespokespersonsaidon November8policereceivedareportof aburglaryatacommercialpremiseson MainRd,Katikati.“Anumberofitems arebelievedtohavebeentakenduringthe incident.”
SeniorSergeantSteveHindmarshsaid KatikatiPolicehadexecutedsearchwarrants atthreeKatikatiaddressesonTuesday inrelationtothisburglary.“Someofthe propertystolenfromtheiFixedburglary wasrecoveredfromtwooftheaddresses. A36-year-oldKatikatiwomanhasbeen chargedwithburglary.Enquiriesare continuingtolocatetheothertwo offenders.”Thewomanwasincustody andwasduetoappearinTauranga DistrictCourtonWednesday,policesaid.
