Trevewenttoboardingschoolin Martonandmovedwithherfamilyto Katikati’snowhistorichomestead–AthenreeHomesteadbuiltbyUlsterIrish settlersHughandAdelaStewartin1879 –onAthenreeRdinherearlytwenties.
“Mum’sparentsboughttheAthenree Homesteadin1948andsolditin1952. Itwaswhenshewaslivingtherethatshe metmyfatherfromWaihi,”saidTrevor.
TrevetoldKatikatiNewsthatshewas invitedtoadanceatWaihīBeach.“The neighboursalongtheroadsuggestedto mysisterandIthatwegoalong.SoIgot alldressedup–stockings,highheelshoes andafancyfrockonlytogodownthere andfindthemallinbikinisandshorts!So thatwasbitofashock.”

TrevesaidafterawhileJockannounced thattheyweregoingtobuyapieceofland tobuildahomeat20CarisbrookeSt.



“Itcost100pounds–itwasalotof moneybackthen.Icanstillremember whentheyputthefoundationsdown andalongcamethislittleguywho walkedaroundtheconcretetopwithhis footprints,saying:‘Iwantabangersee’.” ItwasheroldestsonTrevor,wantinga hammertohelpout.Thecouplelivedin thehomefordecadesuntiltheymovedto SummersetbytheSea.

Trevesaidlifehadgonebypretty quickly.“Whentheboyscamehome, theygotchangedandwentoutinthe backfieldandplayedrugby–timejust wentby.”
Beingbusywiththekids,Trevesaidshe

didn’thavemanyhobbies,andshe neverlikedgardening.“No,thatwas Jock–hehadaveggiegardenthat wouldhavefedhalfofKatikati”.But shehadknittedthousandsofjerseys fornewbornbabiesintheKatikati districtovertheyears.
Instead,Trevesaidshealwayswent whereverherhusbandwentinlife–andthatincludedrugbyfieldsand Katikati’sclubkitchentohelpout.
AccordingtoWesternBayof PlentyCommunityArchivesCollection, JockjoinedKatikatiRugbyClubin 1948asanexperiencedclubplayerand wasimmediatelyappointedcaptainand Senior’scoach.
Jockplayedrugbyuntil1953although hecameoutofretirementtoplayinthe firsttelevisedmatchinNewZealandon July25,1954.TheAllBlacktrialist,who wasalsoarefereeofthegame,wasmade aKatikatiRugbyClublifememberin 1980.Trevorsaidhisfatheralsoservedin theNewZealandArmyinWorldWarII. “Hewaswoundedthreedaysbeforethe warended.”

HopesaidTrevehadbeenmorethan aresidentoverthelastdecade.“She’s beenacornerstoneofourvillage,”said Hope.“Hergentlepresence,thoughtful conversations,andunwaveringkindness havetouchedthelivesofstaffandfellow residentsalike.Whetherit’saquietchat intheloungeoracheerfulwaveinthe hallway,Trevemakeseveryonefeelseen andvalued.”
CelebratingTreve’smilestone,Hope saidtheyalsohonouredthelegacyof loveandconnectionthatshehadbuilt atSummerset.“Herjourneyreminds usoftheimportanceofcommunity,of cherishingeachmoment,andofliving withdignityandjoy.”

Katikati-basedChromeCollective’s networkof50individualswhohave varyingintellectualdisabilities.
TheideawasthebrainchildofSteenburg andRobinson,whosaiditsmembershelp sortdonationsofvariousgoodsfromthe publicwhicharethenon-soldtohelp generaterevenuetosupportthework ofChromeCollectiveCharitableTrust. Thesix-monthpilotwassopopular,the ResourceCollective’soperationsarenow ongoingattheKatikaticentre.

Constructionfundsof$30,000,mainly fromdogregistrationfeesallocated throughWesternBayofPlentyDistrict Council’spreviousLong-termPlan20212031,werecommittedbycouncilin November2023.
Todaytheparkhasagateentrysystem, boundaryfencingandasmallfencedpen fordogstoexerciseindividually.Butno fundswereallocatedforequipmentinside thepark.
Asaresult,Christophersenapproached thecouncilinMarch,askingforfundsto placedogagilityequipmentinthepark.
Christophersensaidcouncil’sparksand reservesofficerEmmaWoodssuggested heconnectwithKatchKatikatitohelp raisefunds.
KatchKatikatigeneralmanager JacquiKnightsaidherorganisation andChristophersenhadsincebeen fundraisingforthedogagilityequipment.
“We’vealreadyraisedabout$5000from corporatesponsorshipandthepublicand
purchasedthetimbrefortheequipment,” saidKnight.
ShesaidplatinumsponsorRawPawz, afamily-runrawpetfoodbusiness,had giventheprojectamassiveboostearlyon.
“Nowtheequipmentisbuilt,the Givealittlepage–withatargetof $3000–israisingfundstoinstallthe equipment.Dependingonwhatweraise andthebudget,iffundsareleftoverwe willlooktogetmoreequipmentorput somesortofshadeshelteratthepark.”
ChristophersensaidKatikatiMenzShed hadmadethedogagilitygear–nowit wasamatterofraisingthefunds,“and gettingcounciltoapprovewherewewant toplacetheequipment”.
Hebelievedtheequipmentshouldbe placedalongthesouthernboundary, about3moutfromthefence,witheach piece5mapart.
“ThisiswhattheNZKennelClub(now DogsNZ)recommend,anditwould meanthatwe’dstillhaveplentyoffree spaceintheparkfordogownerstouse thefacilityhowtheylike.
“Thisboundaryisalsothedriestpartof theparktoo.”
