SinceMarchthey’vebeenonaquest tryingtofundraiseforandorganisethe creationandinstallationofdogagility

equipmentattheKatikatiDogParkin DonegalReserve.

KatchKatikatihashelpedthem fundraisethemoneytobuythetimber, whileKatikatiMenzShedvolunteershad gotstuckinandbuilttheequipment.

Nowallthat’sneededisabitmore

fundingtogettheequipmentinstalled, andcouncilapprovalonwhereto placeit.

Katikati’sSummersetBytheSea retirementvillagehascelebratedits firstresidentturning100.

TreveMitchell’scentenarybirthdaywas heldatthevillagesurroundedbyfamily, friends,fellowresidentsandstaffon October30withspeechesfollowedby cakeandrefreshments.

SummersetBytheSeavillagemanager CaseyHopesaidthevillagehadgathered withTreveandherfamilytocelebrateher trulyremarkablemilestone.“Reachinga centuryisanextraordinaryachievement, andTreve’slifeisatestamenttoresilience, grace,andthequietstrengththatinspires allofus,”Hopesaid.

TrevehadlivedatSummersetbytheSea sinceSeptember2015,whenherandher husband–thelateJack‘Jock’Truscott Mitchell–movedintothefacility’s servicedapartments.

“Together,theybroughtwarmthand communityspirittoApartment217, whereTreveliveduntilhermovetothe carecentreinNovember2024,”Hope said.SummersetBytheSeafirstopened toresidentsinlate-June2013.

TreveRoseMitchell(neeLarner)was bornonOctober31,1925,inHastings, toparentsLeslieandAnneLarner.“Later herparentsweresheepfarmersjustsouth ofMorrinsvilleinanareacalledKiwitahi andtheyhadfivechildren,”saidTreve’s eldestsonTrevorMitchell.

“Shehadthreebrothersandonesister. Shewaschildnumberfourandisthelast onealive.”

Trevewenttoboardingschoolin Martonandmovedwithherfamilyto Katikati’snowhistorichomestead–AthenreeHomesteadbuiltbyUlsterIrish settlersHughandAdelaStewartin1879 –onAthenreeRdinherearlytwenties.

“Mum’sparentsboughttheAthenree Homesteadin1948andsolditin1952. Itwaswhenshewaslivingtherethatshe metmyfatherfromWaihi,”saidTrevor.

TrevetoldKatikatiNewsthatshewas invitedtoadanceatWaihīBeach.“The neighboursalongtheroadsuggestedto mysisterandIthatwegoalong.SoIgot alldressedup–stockings,highheelshoes andafancyfrockonlytogodownthere andfindthemallinbikinisandshorts!So thatwasbitofashock.”

Withmanyofherfriendsalready coupledup,theysaidthey’dfindhera partner.“Ifoundhimandhefoundme,”

saidTreveofJock.“Wemetatthedance quiteoftenafterthat.”

JockhadmovedtoKatikatiin1946to beginateachingjobatwhatwasthen knownasKatikatiCentralSchoolNo.2. Hetaughtattheschooluntil1982. AfterJockandTrevemarriedinJanuary 1949inWaihitheyrentedahomein Katikati.Thecouplehadthreesons, Trevor,JimandRoss.

TrevesaidafterawhileJockannounced thattheyweregoingtobuyapieceofland tobuildahomeat20CarisbrookeSt.

“Itcost100pounds–itwasalotof moneybackthen.Icanstillremember whentheyputthefoundationsdown andalongcamethislittleguywho walkedaroundtheconcretetopwithhis footprints,saying:‘Iwantabangersee’.” ItwasheroldestsonTrevor,wantinga hammertohelpout.Thecouplelivedin thehomefordecadesuntiltheymovedto SummersetbytheSea.

Motherandwhitebaiter

Trevewasafull-timemothertotheir children.Trevorsaidgrowinguphis motherwasalwaysathome“andwewere well-fed”.“Inthewhitebaitseasonshe wouldcatchwhitebaitintheUretara Riverandwe’dcomehomeandhave themforlunch.”

Trevesaidlifehadgonebypretty quickly.“Whentheboyscamehome, theygotchangedandwentoutinthe backfieldandplayedrugby–timejust wentby.”

Beingbusywiththekids,Trevesaidshe

didn’thavemanyhobbies,andshe neverlikedgardening.“No,thatwas Jock–hehadaveggiegardenthat wouldhavefedhalfofKatikati”.But shehadknittedthousandsofjerseys fornewbornbabiesintheKatikati districtovertheyears.

Instead,Trevesaidshealwayswent whereverherhusbandwentinlife–andthatincludedrugbyfieldsand Katikati’sclubkitchentohelpout.

AccordingtoWesternBayof PlentyCommunityArchivesCollection, JockjoinedKatikatiRugbyClubin 1948asanexperiencedclubplayerand wasimmediatelyappointedcaptainand Senior’scoach.

Jockplayedrugbyuntil1953although hecameoutofretirementtoplayinthe firsttelevisedmatchinNewZealandon July25,1954.TheAllBlacktrialist,who wasalsoarefereeofthegame,wasmade aKatikatiRugbyClublifememberin 1980.Trevorsaidhisfatheralsoservedin theNewZealandArmyinWorldWarII. “Hewaswoundedthreedaysbeforethe warended.”

Sharpandthankful

Treve,whotodayhaseight grandchildrenand14greatgrandchildren,creditsherlonglifeto havingthesupportofherlatehusband, andthatofherthreesonssinceher husband’sdeath10yearsago.“I’vebeen luckyhavingmythreesonsaround.”

Whenaskedthesecrettolivingto100,

Trevequipped:“Well,ifIhadthechance Iwouldn’t”.

“Ihonestlydon’tknow.At90,Iwasn’t preparedforwhereI’matnow.But havingmysonsanddaughters-in-law nearbyhasbeentheicingonthecake.” Trevorsaidwhilehismothernowhad MacularDegenerationwhichaffected hersight,shewasstill“sharpasatack”.” Everynowandagainshesurprisesus withwhatshecansee–butherhearingis perfect.”

AtTreve’s100thcelebration,Trevor thankedSummersetbytheSeastafffor lookingafterhismother.“Weknow she’sinverycapablehands–wereally appreciatewhatyoudoforher.”

Seenandvalued

HopesaidTrevehadbeenmorethan aresidentoverthelastdecade.“She’s beenacornerstoneofourvillage,”said Hope.“Hergentlepresence,thoughtful conversations,andunwaveringkindness havetouchedthelivesofstaffandfellow residentsalike.Whetherit’saquietchat intheloungeoracheerfulwaveinthe hallway,Trevemakeseveryonefeelseen andvalued.”

CelebratingTreve’smilestone,Hope saidtheyalsohonouredthelegacyof loveandconnectionthatshehadbuilt atSummerset.“Herjourneyreminds usoftheimportanceofcommunity,of cherishingeachmoment,andofliving withdignityandjoy.”

BOPRCchiefexecutiveFionaMcTavish saidwhiletheannouncementofthe finalelectionresultsconfirmedwhowill besittingaroundthecounciltable,it alsoconfirmedanimpressiverangeof experienceinthecouncillors-elect.

“I’mreallyexcitedthatournewcouncil ismadeupofpeoplefromawiderangeof careersandexperiences,”shesaid.

“Amongournewleaderswehavefarmers, butchers,meteorologists,environmental experts,businessownersandengineers–as wellthosewhobringtheirpreviouslocal governmentexperiencetothetable.

“It’sagreatmixofpeople,whohold arangeofhugelyrelevantskillsandare representativeoftheregion’scommunities.”

McTavishsaidthenewcouncilwasalso madeupofpeoplewhowerecommunity leadersintheirpreviousrolesandthiswasa

naturalsteppingstoneformanyofthem.

Thefirststepsforthenewcouncilhad includedbriefingandinductionsessions andaninauguralcouncilmeetingon October30wheretheyweresworninand electedachairanddeputychair.

TheelectionsawMcDonaldbecomefirsteverwahineMāorichairofthecouncil.

McDonaldsaidshewashonouredtobe electedandlookedforwardtoworking collaborativelywithfellowcouncillorsand communitiesacrosstheBayofPlenty.

Ōmokoroagetsnewresourcerecoverycentre

AnewResourceRecoveryCentre willopeninŌmokoroathismonth, whichwillextendthecircular economycycleprojectwhile providingmeaningfulworkand trainingforpeoplewithintellectual disabilities.

TheResourceCollectivebeganasa six-monthtrialattheWesternBayof PlentyDistrictCouncil(WBOPDC)ownedrecyclingcentreonTetleyRdearly in2024.NamedtheKatikatiResource RecoveryCentre,ateamrunbySharaine SteenbergandShelleyRobinsonbegan takingdonatedandunwantedgoods, whichcouldbecleaned,repairedor upcycledandsoldontothecommunity.

Theteamofhelperswasmadeupof

Katikati-basedChromeCollective’s networkof50individualswhohave varyingintellectualdisabilities.

TheideawasthebrainchildofSteenburg andRobinson,whosaiditsmembershelp sortdonationsofvariousgoodsfromthe publicwhicharethenon-soldtohelp generaterevenuetosupportthework ofChromeCollectiveCharitableTrust. Thesix-monthpilotwassopopular,the ResourceCollective’soperationsarenow ongoingattheKatikaticentre.

Now,Ōmokoroaisto getsitsownResource RecoveryCentre–whichwillopenits doorsonNovember18 at10amat7AProle Rd.

Steenbergsaidthe brandnewfacility wouldbeaplacewhere discardeditemsare givenasecondlife, andpeoplearegiven newopportunities.

“Thisexcitingproject hasbeenmadepossible inpartnershipwiththe WBOPDC,reflecting asharedcommitmenttosustainability andcommunitywellbeing,”Steenberg said.

Constructionfundsof$30,000,mainly fromdogregistrationfeesallocated throughWesternBayofPlentyDistrict Council’spreviousLong-termPlan20212031,werecommittedbycouncilin November2023.

Noequipment

Todaytheparkhasagateentrysystem, boundaryfencingandasmallfencedpen fordogstoexerciseindividually.Butno fundswereallocatedforequipmentinside thepark.

Asaresult,Christophersenapproached thecouncilinMarch,askingforfundsto placedogagilityequipmentinthepark.

Christophersensaidcouncil’sparksand reservesofficerEmmaWoodssuggested heconnectwithKatchKatikatitohelp raisefunds.

KatchKatikatigeneralmanager JacquiKnightsaidherorganisation andChristophersenhadsincebeen fundraisingforthedogagilityequipment.

“We’vealreadyraisedabout$5000from corporatesponsorshipandthepublicand

purchasedthetimbrefortheequipment,” saidKnight.

ShesaidplatinumsponsorRawPawz, afamily-runrawpetfoodbusiness,had giventheprojectamassiveboostearlyon.

Installcosts

“Nowtheequipmentisbuilt,the Givealittlepage–withatargetof $3000–israisingfundstoinstallthe equipment.Dependingonwhatweraise andthebudget,iffundsareleftoverwe willlooktogetmoreequipmentorput somesortofshadeshelteratthepark.”

ChristophersensaidKatikatiMenzShed hadmadethedogagilitygear–nowit wasamatterofraisingthefunds,“and gettingcounciltoapprovewherewewant toplacetheequipment”.

Hebelievedtheequipmentshouldbe placedalongthesouthernboundary, about3moutfromthefence,witheach piece5mapart.

“ThisiswhattheNZKennelClub(now DogsNZ)recommend,anditwould meanthatwe’dstillhaveplentyoffree spaceintheparkfordogownerstouse thefacilityhowtheylike.

“Thisboundaryisalsothedriestpartof theparktoo.”

KatikatiMenzShedsecretaryDave Watsonsaidhisorganisation’svolunteers, acrosstwomonths,hadprefabricated everythingreadytogo.“Butbecausewe’re allinourolderyears,we’reabitbeyond theinstallationoftheequipment.”

DogsNZ-approved

Watsonsaidmenzshedvolunteershad builttwohigh-walkbeamsandramps–

one1mofftheground,another700mm ofthegroundforsmallerdogs–two‘sit/ stay’tablesfordogswhichwoulddouble asseatsforowners,plusaparkbench.

“We’vealsobuiltadogseesaw,which compileswiththeNZKennelClub(now DogsNZ)specificstandardsfordog agilityequipment–asdothehigh-walk beams.”

Christophersenwaspleasedcouncilhad fencedthedogparkbutsaidnowisthe timetogetequipmentinstalled.“Itwould bereallygoodtoseetheequipment placeddownheresoon.Emmawould enjoythedogagilitycourse.Ithinkalot ofotherdogswhichcomeherewouldbe keenonittoo.Thegearwouldalsobring morevisitingdogownersanddogstothe park.”

Withtheunofficialstartof summer–Labourweekend–gone,WesternBayofPlenty hadseenaninfluxofvisitors, includingthefirstwaveof freedomcampers.

Asholidaymakersturnedupthis summer,WesternBayofPlenty DistrictCouncil(WBOPDC)was remindingcamperstofollowthe rules,respectlocalcommunities, andhelpkeeppopularspotsclean andsafe.

“Wewanteveryonetohavea fun,safeexperience–thatmeans campingindesignatedareas, disposingofwasteproperly,and beingmindfulofothers,”said

WBOPDCcomplianceand monitoringmanagerDougal Elvin.

Hesaidtherewere46designated freedomcampingsitesacrossthe WBOPdistrict,fromWaihīBeach toŌtamarākau.
