ApplicationsarenowopenfortheWesternBayof PlentyDistrictCouncilCCTVFund— with$50,000availabletohelpmakeour sharedspacessafer.

Thefundaimstohelppreventcrimeanddeteranti-social behaviourbyaddingtothegrowingnetworkofCCTV (closedcircuittelevision)camerasaroundtherohe(district).

Sincethefundwasintroducedfouryearsago,ithad supportedtheinstallationof25newcamerasthroughout theWesternBOP.

Tobeeligible,proposedcamerasmustbelocatedinshared publicspaces–notonprivateproperty.

Applicationsareconsideredbyapanel,including councillorsWesternBayofPlentyDistrictCouncil operationsmanagerKerrieLittleandaNZPolice representative.

“Ifthere’sanareainyourneighbourhoodthatcould benefitfromaCCTVcamera,we’dencourageyoutoapply –evenifyou’vetriedinpreviousyears,”saidLittle.

Havingcommunitiesidentifypriorityareashelpsensure thefundisusedwhereit’smosteffective,shesaid.

Agroupofresidentsarehosting basketballsessionsattheAction Centrethisschoolterm.

KatikatiresidentsMaddyKilford, SheannaChadwickandJoshHuntlast weekbeganhostingthesessionstogauge interestonrevivingtheclub.

“TherewasabasketballclubinKatikati about10yearsago.ItwasrunbyJulie AylwinandJeanetteO’Brien,whohad sonsplayingthesport,”saidKilford. “Oncetheyleftitkindoffizzledout. Girls’basketballwentforacouplemore yearsthenfizzledoutaswell.”

KilfordandChadwickbothplayedina girls’teamwhentheyattendedKatikati Collegeandstillholdaloveforthesport. “Nowwe’vebothgotfull-timejobswe havetimetogivesomethingbacktothe community–sowe’rekeentogetthe clubupandrunningagain,”saidKilford.

KatikatiCollegehasaseniorsboys’team playingintheTaurangabasketballleague butnogirls’teams,andtheladieswere keentochangethis.

Theyapproachedthecollegewiththeir ideatorevivetheclubandsecureduseof theActionCentreforthisterm’ssessions. KilfordandChadwickweretakingthe girls’session.

Threesessions

OnWednesdays,anadults’scrimmage from6.30pmisforthose18-plus.People couldjustturnupatKatikatiCollege ActionCentreandentryis$2.“Thisisto getthewidercommunityinvolvedinthe sport–andthiscouldpotentiallyleadto ateamenteringaleagueortournaments

KilfordandChadwickwouldliketo enteragirls’teamintotheTauranga basketballleague–whichisplayedat MercuryBaypark–nextyearinTerms2 and3.“That’swhywe’reencouragingYear 6stocometoourgirls’sessions,given thattheywouldbeabletoplayinateam nextyear.”

Huntwouldliketoexpandthesenior boys’teamplayingintheTaurangaleague –ifthereisinterest.

Chadwicksaidthefocusisongetting youthinvolved–andcurrentlythey’re tryingtore-establishKatikatiBasketball Club“onthebackoftheschool”. However,youthwhodon’tattendKatikati Collegecangetinvolved.

Fastest-growingsport

AccordingtoBasketballNewZealand, basketballisthefastestgrowingsportat youthlevelinNewZealand.Moreover, withStevenAdams–aNZprofessional basketballplayerfortheHoustonRockets oftheNationalBasketballAssociation

(NBA)–nowahouseholdnamein Aotearoa,andtheWomen’sNational BasketballAssociation(WNBA)hosting 30teamsinAmerica,thepopularity ofthesportisgrowingworlwide,said Chadwick.

“Kidsarekindofwatchingthatalittle bitmorenow,andgettinginterested,” saidChadwick.

“WhenIstartedplaying,Inever watchedbasketball.Ijustfollowedmy friendstotrialsandfellinlovewithit. Now[thesport]it’smoreonsocialmedia, whichisgainingtheinterestofyouth.”

Removingbarriers

Kilfordbelievedthattravelwasabarrier tolocalfamiliesfromenteringthesport. “WhatIthinkdetersyouthfromhere isthatyouhavetotraveltoplay,”said Kilford.

“IfyouwanttoplayforaTaurangabasedbasketballclubyouhavetotravel fortrainingsandgames.”Alocalexample wasaboywhotravelledtoTauranga regularlyfortrainingsplus,fortwo 10-minutegamesperweek.

“So,wewantto[setupthisclub]to makeitmoreaccessibleforKatikati peoplebutalso,potentiallythosefrom Waihi,WaihīBeach,Pahoia,Ōmokoroa aswell,”saidChadwick.

“Wewanttocreateacentreofbasketball thatpeoplecanenjoywithouthaving todrivetotown.”Costsfortryingthe sessions–thegirls’isfree–hadalsobeen kepttoaminimumtomakeitmore accessibletofamilies.

Kilfordalsowantedtomakethesport availableyear-foundinsteadofthe traditionalschoolTerms2and3.

“Wedon’twantittobesomething thatjusthappensinwinter.Wewantto encouragepeopletotrainthroughout theyear,sowhenyoucomeintowinter [toenterateaminaleague]you’restill warmandnotstartingfromscratch,”said Kilford.

“That’swhywe’vestartedthisinTerm 4–toseewhoisinterested–thenTerm1 we’llgetbackintoitandhopefullycarry on,toenterteamsintotheyouthleague atMercuryBayparkcomeTerm2.”

Morevolunteers

Fromaninitialmeetingafewmonths agobetweenthoseinterested,anew logohadbeencreatedandaninternal clubpage“wherepeoplecanbeadded, fordiscussionsonhowtomovethings forwardfornowbecausethisisveryearly stages,”saidChadwick.

Kilfordsaidtheywillneedpeopleto helpruntheclub–andthatincludesoffcourtrolestoo.

“Wewillneedmorevolunteers–aswe stillneedtoformacommitteeandhave peoplevolunteerforrolessuchascoaches, umpires,teammanagersetc.”

StormwaterinWaihīBeachandother partsofthedistrictwilldependheavilyon howthisnewstructureisformed.Central Governmenthasalsorequiredcouncils topreparespecialplanswitha30-year horizon,andIbelievestronglythatthese mustincludeprovisionforaged-care facilities.Weneedtomakesuretheyare enabledandsupportedtobebuilt. How,asanelectedKatikati-Waihi Beachcouncillor,doyouintendtowork onprogressingthese?

Forme,it’sallaboutpeople.I’vealready committedtolistening,engaging,and helpingresidentsachievewhat’sneededin theircommunities.Mygoalsforthisterm arefocusedonensuringourpeoplelivein safer,moreaffordablecommunities.

Oneofthepressingissuesissecuring areliableoutfallfortheKatikatisewage system–thecurrentset-upisfailingtoo often.I’dalsolovetoseetheAthenree crossingcompleted,butthatwillrequire externalfundingsupport.And,ofcourse,

thelong-discussedKatikatibypass remainsapriority.Gettingitincludedin centralgovernment’sroadingplanswould beahugeachievementforourdistrict. Pleasetellourreaderssomethingthey maynotknowaboutyou?

Peopleoftenknowabitaboutmy background,butforthosewhodon’t–I startedmyworkinglifeasahorologist, awatchmakerandjeweller.Thatearly careertaughtmepatience,precision,and theimportanceofkeepingeverything runningsmoothly–lessonsthathave stayedwithmeinmyworkonCouncil today.

WaihīBeachLifeguard ServicesInciscelebrating90 yearsofoperationnextmonth withaweekendjam-packedof activitiestoshowcasetheclub’s lifesavinghistoryonthesand andsurf.

OnNovember7-9theservicewill markthemilestoneatitsBeachRd clubhouse,saideventco-organiser NatalieLloyd.

“Wehadlifeguardspatrolling thebeachandkeepingbeachgoers safefromthe1920s. Theyhadareeland eltforrescues; othingelse–but heclubwasn’t ormallyestablished tthatstage,”said Lloyd.

OnSaturday,November8,there’s moremixingandmingling,then aspecialtributetothesurfboat, whichwasoneofourfirstpieces ofrescueequipment.Today,27 yearslater,WaihīBeachLifeguard ServicesstillhostsamajorSurf LifeSavingNewZealandsurfboat eventannuallyhighlightingthe strengthandskillsrequiredtorow outandpickupapatient.This willbeaveryspecialmoment, bothforWaihīBeachclubbies, butalsocrewsaroundthecountry.

OnSundaymorning,theclub willholdapaddleout,afurther tributetomembersandfriends weremember,andacelebration ofthepeopleandmilestonesthat haveshapedthelast90years.

Afterlunchamemorialstone willbeunveiledandblessedby localiwiinthegardenadjacentto theclub.

“Ahugestonedcarvedin theshapeofawavehasbeen sculptedbyHinueraStone,and isacelebrationofeverybody whohasbeenpartofsavinglives andprotectingpeopleatWaihī Beach,includinglifeguardsbut alsoallourothervolunteerswho contribute.Itwillalsohonour thosewhohavepassed,”said Lloyd.

Thateveningacelebration dinnerwillbringpastand presentmemberstogetherto mark90years,sharestories,and acknowledgethevolunteersand supporterswhokeepWaihīBeach rescue-ready.
