“ThewinnerswereLeoWebbfrom GreertonintheKeacategory,Ainsley RawlingsfromGreertonwonCubs,and KyanGrantfromGreertonwonScouts. Wealsoheldafunsiblingscategory ontheday,whichwaswonbyJuniper ParkinsonfromKatikati.”

The10mvesselreplacestheformer GallagherRescue,whichwasa9.5m Naiadwithtwo250hpfour-strokemotors thatwaslaunchedin2013.Thisboatwill bedecommissionedandsold,whilethe new10mGallagherRescuewouldbethe primaryrescuevesselbackedupbythe coastguard’s5.8mAvocoRescueNaiaddesignedRHIB(rigidhullinflatable boat),poweredbytwin115hpYamaha outboards.
ThecoastguardwoulduseGallagher RescuetooverseetheBowentownBar, oneofthemostnotoriousinNew Zealand,whileAvocoRescueprotected thechannelsandshallowareasofthe NorthernTaurangaHarbour.
Dunlopsaidthenewboatcameabout afterWaihīBeachCoastguard’sVessel ReplacementSub-Committee–Jacqui Paterson,AndrewJennings,DaveGrant andStuGordonandhimself–optedto buildnewinsteadofproceedingwitha 10-yearupgradeofthe9.5mboat.
“Therewerethingsonouroldboatthat wewantedtoimprovebutwedecided toforgothatandputthatconsiderable amountofmoneytowardsanewvessel,”
saidDunlop.“Thenew boatcost$1,020,000 thankstoourcoastguard’s ownfundraisingaswell asfinancialassistanceand sponsorshipfromanumber ofcontributors.”
KimBertelsen,ofFantom Fabrications,saidthenew boatwasdesignedbyhim withhelpfromDunster, andtheirsmallefficient teamoffourbuiltit.“Our teamispassionateaboutany engineeringprojectwetake on,andwe’rededicatedto topquality,andbackour products.”
