HostedannuallybytheKatikatiSea Scouts,theeventtaskschildrenagedfive to15whoareinvolvedinScouts,Cubs, Keasgroupacrossthedistrict–plustheir siblings–tocustomiseawoodencarfor thederby.

“Scouts,Cubs,Keas,theirsiblings, adults,andgroupleadersbuyawooden carkit,shapeit,paintit,andaddwheels andweightstoverystrictguidelines,”said KatikatiSeaScoutsassistantgroupleader andfundraisingcoordinatorRebecca Lawson.

Thefastestcarsfromthreerace categories–Scouts,CubsandKeas–at Saturday’sderbywereselectedtohead totheNationalPinewoodDerbyin AucklandonNovember22,torace againstcompetitorsfromtherestofNew Zealand,saidLawson.

“ThewinnerswereLeoWebbfrom GreertonintheKeacategory,Ainsley RawlingsfromGreertonwonCubs,and KyanGrantfromGreertonwonScouts. Wealsoheldafunsiblingscategory ontheday,whichwaswonbyJuniper ParkinsonfromKatikati.”

Lawsonsaidabout120carswereentered

thisyear–andapartfromracingthere wereothergames,asausagesizzle,and giveawaysthroughouttheday.

“OneofourKatikatiSeaScoutsleaders, BenLewis,spentawholedayrunninga knot-tyingcompetitionforthekids,and teachingthemhowtotieknots.”

KatikatiMenzShedhelpedKatikati tamariki(children)withthecreationof theircars“andhelpedusgetourtracksup scratch”.

Thenewboathasthesamename asitspredecessor–GallagherRescue –tohonourthesponsorshipWaihī BeachCoastguardreceivesfromSir WilliamandLadyJudiGallagher,who traditionallylaunchedandnamed thevesselwithageneroussplashof champagne.

The10mvesselreplacestheformer GallagherRescue,whichwasa9.5m Naiadwithtwo250hpfour-strokemotors thatwaslaunchedin2013.Thisboatwill bedecommissionedandsold,whilethe new10mGallagherRescuewouldbethe primaryrescuevesselbackedupbythe coastguard’s5.8mAvocoRescueNaiaddesignedRHIB(rigidhullinflatable boat),poweredbytwin115hpYamaha outboards.

ThecoastguardwoulduseGallagher RescuetooverseetheBowentownBar, oneofthemostnotoriousinNew Zealand,whileAvocoRescueprotected thechannelsandshallowareasofthe NorthernTaurangaHarbour.

Dunlopsaidthenewboatcameabout afterWaihīBeachCoastguard’sVessel ReplacementSub-Committee–Jacqui Paterson,AndrewJennings,DaveGrant andStuGordonandhimself–optedto buildnewinsteadofproceedingwitha 10-yearupgradeofthe9.5mboat.

“Therewerethingsonouroldboatthat wewantedtoimprovebutwedecided toforgothatandputthatconsiderable amountofmoneytowardsanewvessel,”

saidDunlop.“Thenew boatcost$1,020,000 thankstoourcoastguard’s ownfundraisingaswell asfinancialassistanceand sponsorshipfromanumber ofcontributors.”

KimBertelsen,ofFantom Fabrications,saidthenew boatwasdesignedbyhim withhelpfromDunster, andtheirsmallefficient teamoffourbuiltit.“Our teamispassionateaboutany engineeringprojectwetake on,andwe’rededicatedto topquality,andbackour products.”

dedicatethewaka(boat)toTangaroa,the atua(ancestor)ofthemoana(ocean),was performedbyOtawhiwhiMaraechairman ReonTuanauinthepresenceofhisfather, kaumatuaRogerTuanau.

“Thekaupapaisournewbeautifulwaka here,andwecan’tspeakhighlyenough abouthowmuchthecoastguardmeansto ushereatWaihīBeach,”saidTuanau. “Theykeepussafe,lookafterusonthe moana(sea)andmakesurethereisagood presencetospreadthewordofsafetyon ourmoana.”

TheMangōpare

ReonsaidhisTeWhānauaTauwhao hapūhadgiftedadesignelementtothe boat–alightbluekōwhaiwhaipattern. ThepatternwasoftheMangōpare–the hammerheadshark–whichcomesfrom insidethewharenuiatOtawhiwhiMarae. “That’sagiftfromourmaraeforour community.Itrepresentsperseverance, determinationfightingtothebitterend andnevergivingup–andIthinkthat reallyencapsulateswhowearehereat WaihīBeachandwhatweliketostand for.”Afterwards,thevesselwaslaunched intonorthernTaurangaHarbour,taking sponsorsanddignitariesforashorttripto showitscapabilities.

Whileon-board,bothDenyerandSole receivedphonecallstosaythey’d beenre-electedtotheirformerrolesinthe LocalBodyElections.

KatikatiLionsClub’sJoanneHurnesaid130people cametothecharitydinner,whichishostedannuallyby KatikatiLions,fortheseniorcommunityofthedistrict.

“Thisyear,theoldestdinerwasThelmaPemberton,aged 95,andtheyoungestwasAngelaTemple,aged53.

“NineKatikatiLeoshelpedwithservingfoodand drinks,and30Lionsandeightvolunteerspreparedthe mealusingthehallkitchen.”

KatikatiLionDaveEddybelievedtheLoneDiners Luncheonstartedin1978atKatikati’sStPeter’sAnglican Churchhall,withroughly20guests.

“Westarteditbecauseanewmembertoourclubatthe time,AlbieHall,hadbeeninMatamataandtheyhad heldsomethingsimilar.Wereceivedgreatfeedbackform thefirstonesowekeptofferingiteachyear.”
