Keentocollaborateongrowingkai?

Acommunity-driveninitiativein

Katikatiislookingforafamilyor individualwhowantstogrowfood topairwithalocallandownerand sharetheproduce.

GrowOnKatikati(GOK)–aproject thatinspiresfoodresilience,onebackyard atatime,inthecommunity–hasanother spotonitscollaborativegardening mission,saidspokespersonJizzyGreen.

“Collaborativegardeningpairssomeone withalargegardentheycan’tkeepup with,withagardenerwhohaslimited spacebutenergyandenthusiasmto grow,”saidGreen.

“Together,theysharetheworkload, theharvest,andthejoyofgrowingkai [food].Overtheyears,foursuccessful collaborativegardenshaveblossomedvia GOK,”Greensaid.

“Now,we’reextendingtheinvitationto thewidercommunity.Perhapsafamily –orevenapersonontheirown–are lookingforaspacetogrowfood?

“Rightnow,KatikatiresidentBarbara Greenhasawonderfullargegardenon FairviewRdandsheislookingfora gardeningbuddytojoinherandanother gardeneringrowingfoodtoshare.”

Greensaidcollaborativegardening isanotherwayGOKcanhelpcreatea connectedcommunity.“Andweknow thataconnectedcommunityisaresilient community!”

Sincestartingin2020,GOKhas continuedtothrive,celebratingfiveyears ofgrowththisyear.

Beyondsupplyingseeds,seedlings,and

skillsthroughworkshopsformembers, italsorunsamonthlyCropSwapon thefirstSaturdayofeachmonthbeside KatikatiCommunityCentre.“It’saplace wherepeoplebringtheirsurplusproduce toshare–andgohomewithsomething newinreturn,”saidGreen.

“BecauseGOKrespondstotheneedsof thecommunity,newideasoftentakeroot. Whenparentssuggestedagardeningclub forchildren,theSeedlingsClubwasborn.

“Whentwoelderlygardenerssharedthat theyhadthelandbutcouldnolonger managethephysicalwork,theideaof

collaborativegardeningemerged.”

Thecollaborativegardeningprojectmay suitpeoplewhohavelimitedornospace intheirownbackyardforgardening,want toentertheworldofgrowingproduce,or needtoputmorefoodonthetable.

Thecommitteeandvolunteers behindtheWaihiBeach CommunityShophopetoswingthe doorswideopenbyearly-October afteravehicleaccidenthadclosed thestoresinceJuly18.

WaihiBeachCommunityShop CommitteespokespersonGaryAlway saidtheMayorViewVolunteerFire Brigadewascalledtotheshopabout2pm onFriday,July18,afteralocalresident sufferedamedicaleventwhiledriving, whichpropelledtheirvehicleintothe building.

“Certainly,itwasnotintentional,and thelady’scarcamethroughthefrontof theshop.”

Alwaysaidtheincidenthappenedjust aftertheshophadshutfortheday,and staffwereinsidevacuuming.“Itpinned oneofthestaffagainstthecounter, howevershewasfine.Theladydriving thevehiclewastrappedinthecarsothe brigade,withhelpfromWaihi’sbrigade, managedtogetherout.”

Alwaysaiditwasveryfortunateno-one wasseriouslyhurt“becausethisisabusy destinationforthecommunity”.

Fueldamage

Theshop’sfrontwindowwasdamaged, bric-a-bracitemswerebroken–“but luckilytherewasnostructuraldamageto thebuilding”,Alwaysaid.

“Thevehicle’spetroltankwasruptured comingacrosstheroad,hittingthe bollardsandtakingoutthepicnicseat, andthiscausedallthefueltoleakonto theshopfloor.”

Thefueldamagewaswhatcausedthe shoptoremainclosedformorethantwo months,Alwaysaid.

“Thefloorhasbeenstrippedofitscarpet andtheconcretehastobepolishedback

togetridofthefuelfumesandthen sealedsothefloorcanberecarpeted.”

Thefrontdoorhadalreadybeenreplaced.

“Wewereconcernedabouttheclothing andfabricitemsbutacoupleoftheteam tookitallhomeandwashedittorescue it.Noweverysingleitemthatwasinthat shophasbeenwashedandironedandis readytogobackin–becauseitdidn’tget contaminated.”

Stockpilebric-a-brac

Thesortinggarageoutbackwasbeing usedtoholdallstockuntiltheshop re-opened,saidAlway.

“Oursummerstockisreadytogo. However,wewillbeshortonbric-a-brac. Thepots,pans,glasses,cupsetc.”

Asaresult,heaskedthecommunity tostockpiletheseitemsanddeliver themoncetheshopre-opened.“Weare reallyluckytohavesuchasupportive community.”

WaihiBeachCommunityShopis enteringitsthirdyearofoperation,and fundsraisedfromthesaleofitemsgoesto threelocalcharities–Waihi BeachSurfLifeSavingClub, WaihiBeachCoastguard, andMayorViewVolunteer FireBrigade.

Sincetheaccidenttheshop hashadnoincomepass ontothelocalnon-profit groups.

‘Huge’impact

Alwaysaidtheimpactthe shophashadonthecharities sinceitsinceptionwas “huge”.

“Ithinkitwas$25,000 eachtheyreceivedthefirst

year.Lastyearitwasanother $20,000each–andthey’reall non-profitsothey’reallscratching aroundformoney.”

MayorViewVolunteerFire Brigadepurchasedamulefor rescuingpeoplefromHomunga Bay,atwo-hourwalkfromWaihi Beach’snorthernend.“Plus,itgoes towardourutereplacement,”said Alway,avolunteerfirefighterat MayorView’sbrigade.

WaihiBeachSurfClubhadused thefundstohelpcreateitsnew hub,andthecoastguardtokeepits life-savingoperationsgoing. Alwayestimatedtheshopwould re-openintwoweeks’time.“We’ve gotthefloorgrindingtogetdone, laythenewcarpetandgivethe buildinglickofpaintbeforeour volunteersgointostartbuildingnew shelving.”

Alwaysaidbuildingrepairswerecovered bythelandlord’sinsurancepolicy,butthe shopwasnotinsured–whichmeantall stockandlostprofitwasnotcovered.

Supportivelandlord

Althoughtheshopdidhavea contingencyfundtodrawonfor emergencies,“whichhadcomeinhandy” tokeeppayingutilitybillssuchaspower, internetandfornewshelving.

“We’dliketothanktheRobandfamily, ourlandlord.Theyhavejustbeen amazingtousthewholewaythrough,” saidAlway.

Between25and30volunteersrunthe shop,whichisopen10am-2pmsixdays weeklyinwinter,andsevendayswhen possibleinsummer.

“Wearealwaysaftermorevolunteers –sopleasegetintouchifyoucanhelp,” saidAlway,whoviewedtheshopasnot onlyamoney-makerforthecharitiesbut acommunityhub.

“It’sahubthatkeepsourcommunity connected.Ourvolunteerswouldalways haveacuppaandabickiesoitwassocial place,andcustomerswouldcomefora cuppaandbickietoo!”

FromTePunatoWaihīBeach,a rangeofvoicesandperspectivesare beingsoughttohelpplanforthe futureofthreekeycommunitiesin theWesternBayofPlenty Duringthenexttwoyears,spatialplans arebeingdevelopedforTePuna-Minden, Katikati,andWaihīBeach-BowentownAthenree.

And,tomakesurethecommunityis involvedrightfromthestart,WesternBay ofPlentyDistrictCouncil(WBOPDC) willbeusingCommunityIdeasForums tolisten,involveandcollaborate withthosewithlocalknowledgeand connections.

Aforumofabout20willbeestablished foreachspatialplanarea,including adiversecross-sectionofpeople,said WBOPDCactinggeneralmanager strategyandcommunityEmilyWatton.

Thoseselectedwillsitontheforum, alongsidedirectly-appointedcommunity leaders,includingelectedmembers,iwi/ hapūrepresentativesandkeystakeholders, tomakesurecommunityconcerns,values andideasarefrontandcentreinproject planning,saidWatton.

Thespatialplanswilllookathowtowns, neighbourhoodsandruralareasareset upnow,andhowtheycouldgrowand changeduringthenext30to50years.

Managinggrowth

It’saboutmanaginggrowthpressures andplanningforallthingsthatmakea placegreattolivein–likehomes,parks, roads,walkways,cycleway,community spacesandplaceforworkandbusinesses,

saidWatton,whobelievedinvolvingthe communityfromtheoutsetiskeyto gettingitright.

“Theseareimportantkōrero[talks]that ourcommunitieshavebeenwantingfor sometime,andtheCommunityIdeas Forumswillbringlocalperspective andinputtothetablerightfromthe beginning,”shesaid.“It’sabouttesting ideas,understandingfocusareasand deepeningcommunityinvolvement, sowecancreateasharedvisionforour communities.

“Wearelookingforpeoplewholive, work,orhavestrongconnectionsto thesecommunities.“Whetheryouhave ayoungfamily,ownabusinessorare enjoyingyourretirement,anyonecanput theirhandup.”

Theforumswillmeetatkeystages throughouttheprocesstogenerate ideas,sharecommunityperspectivesand providerecommendations,whichwill bereportedtocouncilforconsideration,

Wattonsaid.“Theforumswon’thaveany formaldecision-makingpowers,buttheir inputwillplayacriticalroleinshaping council’splanningandprojectoutcomes.”

Therewillbeotherengagement opportunitiesforthewidercommunity togetinvolvedinasthespatialplansare developed.“Weallwantsafe,connected, thrivingcommunities,withaffordable homes,localjobs,qualityeducationand publicspaceseveryonecanenjoy,but goodplanningtakestime,”Wattonsaid.

“Aswegrow,thespatialplanswillguide ourplanning,whileprotecting andenhancingwhatmakeseach communityspecial.”

Spatialplansarebeingdevelopedfor TePuna-Minden,Katikati,andWaihī Beach-Bowentown-Athenreedueto increasinggrowthpressuresandthe needformoreup-to-datelocalplanning, Wattonsaid.Thespatialplanswillbe progressedalongsidethespatialplan processthatisalreadyunderwayinTe

Puke.Theplanswillsupportdevelopment ofcouncil’sLongTermPlan2027-2037, andwillalsocontributetoaRegional SpatialPlan,whichisexpectedtobe requiredundernewlegislationthatis replacingtheResourceManagementAct.

“Ifyou’repassionateaboutyourlocal community,weencourageyoutoregister yourinteresttobepartofaforum.There willalsobeplentyofotheropportunities overthenexttwoyearstogetinvolved andshareyourthoughtsandideas.

“Communityvoicesitsattheheartof thisKaupapa[cause].Thisisatwo-year process,withmultipletouchpointswhere peoplecankōrerowithus,testideas,and helpguidewhathappensnext.”

Focus

Ourcouncilmustgetbacktobasics.ThefirstjobistoappointanewChief Executivewhowantstoworkcloselywiththecouncilandthecommunity. Wealsoneedastrategicreviewofthecouncil’sroleandpurpose.Wemust involveallofourcommunitiesinthatprocess,notdoitbehindcloseddoors.

Efficiency

Wecannotaffordfurtherbigratesincreasessothefullstrategicreviewmust havesavingsatitscore.Ourcouncil’soverheadsarehigherthanothersimilar councilsandwecannolongerafford“BusinessasUsual”.Thiswillrequire anopendiscussionwiththecommunityaboutcouncilservicesandwhereyou wantustofocus.

Openness

Thebiggestcomplaintaboutcouncil,afterhighrates,isaperceptionthat counciltalksdowntothepublic.Weneedleaderswhocommunicatethe newsofcouncilwithoutspin--thetoughstuffaswellashappynews.We needamorehumblecouncilwithagenuineopennesstotheideasofothers.

Transparency

Wehavemadeprogresswithpublishedworkshopnotesandmoreopen debateatcouncilmeetings.Nextstepsaregenuineengagementwiththe public,including‘nochange’asanoptionduringconsultationexercisesand anenlargedroleforcommunityboards.Residentsshouldnotbesurprisedby thecouncil’sdecision-makingprocess.

Fundingapplicationsfor round3oftheTauranga WesternBayCommunity EventFund(TWBCEF) arenowopen.

OnSeptember22, TWBCEFannouncedithad grantedatotalof$297,000 to40newandregular community-ledeventsin itsrecentfundinground2, withitfocusedonsupporting eventsthatenrichthelocal communitythroughactive participationandinclusion.

Eventsgrantedfundsranged fromsportingtoChristmas andfestiveeventstocultural andenvironmentalgatherings.

TWBCEwasestablished tosupportandenhancelocal events,ensuringbothlocals andvisitorshaveabroadrange ofeventstoexperienceand enjoythroughouttheyear.

Astreamlinedprocess enablesmoreopportunities fororganisersfromthefive fundingpartnersandopens thedoortoprofitandnot-for-

profitevents.

Thefundisapartnership betweenfundersAcorn Foundation,BayTrust,TECT, TaurangaCityCounciland WesternBayofPlentyDistrict Council,andrunsfour fundingroundsannually.In the2024/2025financialyear, $966,461wasgrantedto99 events.

BayTrustchiefexecutive AlastairRhodessaidit’s excitingtoseethefund supportsuchavariedscopeof eventsandhewasconfident therewassomethingfor everyonetoenjoy.

“Theeventsweareableto supportthroughthefund trulyshowcasethediverse communitywehavein TaurangaandtheWestern BayofPlenty.Witheventsof allshapesandsizes,thereare endlessoptionsforlocalsand visitorstoattend.”

TECTCommunityTrust chiefexecutiveWayneWerder saidfundingawiderangeof eventsisincrediblyimportant forconnection,celebration, andempowermentof community.

“It’saboutcreatingvibrant andinclusivecommunity whereeveryonehasthe opportunitytoparticipate.”

Thecalendarfeaturesphotographs submittedbylocalresidentsinresponse totheLoveKatikatiphotocompetition heldinAugustbyKatchKatikati.

KatchKatikatidigitalandmarketing managerFionaPowellsaidthe competitioninvitedresidentstocapture imagesreflectingtheirappreciationfor thetown.

“Atotalof42photographerssubmitted 96images,with13selectedbyajudging paneltobefeaturedintheinaugural calendar–oneforeachmonthandone forthecover.”

TheimageforNovemberwastakenby KatikatiresidentClaudiaDiggelmann, whohasaspectacularviewofthe TaurangaHarbourfromherbackyard.

“I’maphotoholic,”saidthe94-yearold.“That’soneofmyoldestphotos[of theview]Ithink.”

Alwaysbeautiful

Diggelmannsaidalong-timefriend hadgotherintophotographylongago, andthepassionhasgrownfromthere. Sheenteredthreephotographsinthe competition–andonewaschosen.

Thephotographisfromherbackyard andfeaturesTeAwanuiTauranga HarbourandTutaetakaIsland,a sacredMāoriburial(urupā)place forlocalhapū,NgāiTamawhariua andTeRereatukahiaMaraewhānau.

Diggelmannsaidthisviewisalways beautifulandchangesdailywiththe weather.

Whilenoneofthechosenphotographs featuredthetown’swell-knownmurals oriconicsculpturessuchasBarry andJackthedog,thefinalselection offeredsomethingequallyvaluable–a freshperspectiveonKatikati’slesserknownplaces.

Quiet,everydayscenes

“Manyoftheimageshighlighted quiet,everydayscenes–oftenwith waterplayingacentralrole,whether theUretaraStreamorviewsofTauranga Harbour,”saidaspokespersonforthe judgingpanel.“Theyrevealedapersonal connectiontothelandscapeandto Katikatiasawhole.”

Thecalendarwasaninitiativeled byPowell,whohaslongenvisioneda locally-drivencalendarprojecttohelp promotethetown.Thisyear,aprivate sponsorcameforwardtofundthefirst printrun,makingthevisionareality.

PrintedlocallybyKatipoCreative Studio,thecalendarreflectsa commitmenttosupportinglocal talentandbusinesses.Itisavailablefor purchasefor$25atTheArtsJunction, whilestockslast.

“Wewerethrilledwiththeresponse fromthecommunity,”saidPowell.“It’s clearthatKatikatiholdsaspecialplace inpeople’shearts,andthiscalendar capturesthatsentimentbeautifully.We hopeitbecomesanannualtradition.”

Maryanne’sgardenistrulyhers–“I plantedeverythinghere,”shesaidofthe onceblankcanvas.

Sheusedpolythenepipetoformthe shapeofhergardenthreedecadesago. “Before,whenyoucamehomeyoudrove straightofftheroadanddownbelowthe house,”saidMaryanne.

“I’dneverlivedsoclosetotheroad,so Idecidedtocurvethedrivewayintothe propertyandremovethedrivewaybelow.”

Nowalovelypergola,withgrapevine runningovertop,sitsbelowthehomewith abrickcourtyardandrosemarybush.

Thirtyyearsago,Maryannegottowork prettyquick.“Alotofmyfirstplantings werefromthrow-outbinsatlocalgarden centres.”

Show-stoppers

Today,there’slargetrees–amagnificent Magnolia‘StarWars’andalonekauriare show-stoppers.Butit’sthe25-year-old cherrytreecaptivatesyouwithitsgnarly branchesextendingliketangled,twisted arms.

Maryanneadmitsshegotcarriedaway withtreeplantingintheearlydaysand nowhasanarboristvisitannuallytotrim orremoveafew.“It’samazingwhathe cantidyupinafewminutes!”

Today,amongthetrees,arebeautiful pocketsofflowersandplants,with daffodils,fuchsias,androsesallhaving theirownspace.Thelatterbenefitsfrom donatedhorsepoo.

“Ilikeit[thegarden]becauseithas lotsoflittle‘rooms’,andyouneverquite knowwhat’sroundthenextcorner–even Isometimesdon’tknow!saidMaryanne.

“There’salwayssomethingflowering orhappening–nomatterwhattimeof year,”saidRod.

Hesaidawoodenfenceoriginallymade thegarden’ssmallboundary.“Thatfence wasoriginallyalongthenew drivewaybutit’sbeenshifted outfurtherandfurtheroverthe years!Thejokewaswhenwould itmeetthestreamdownthe hill?”

Downhilltoil

Ithasn’tyet,butthecouplehave toileddownhilltoo.In20172018theCalversplantedoutthe stream,atthebottomoftheir land,with2.5hectaresofnatives. “Itdoesn’tquiteconnectuptothe gardenbutitcertainlyprovidesa greatbackdrop,”saidRod. ThesedaysMaryannehasa gardenervisitonce-fortnightlyto keepthingsshipshape.PlusRod

isalwaysmulching,weeding andtendingtothegarden whereshedirectshim. Difficulttochoosea favouritearea,Maryannesaid shedoesenjoysittingona woodenseattuckedintothe rearright-handcorner.“It’s lovelysittingtherelooking outontothehills.”

Belowthegardenisthe couple’sSpeckleParkcattle onlusciousgreengrass, thestream,andnorthern TaurangaHarbouronthe horizon.

Maryanneonlyopensher gardentothepublicinthe KatikatiGardenRamble becausetheevent’sprofits goestolocalcauses.“All moneyraisedfromthe gardenramblegoesdirectly tothecommunityprojects thatRotarysupports,”said Rod.
