Thefurs,gloves,scarves,headpieces, jewellerywereonandthefinegowns andsuitswerespickandspanas morethan200peopleenjoyed theSettlers’Dancelast Saturdayevening.

AccordingtoValBakerofKatikati JTroopLegionofFrontiersmen, whichprovidedeventsecurity,the eventattracted178peoplethrough thedoorplus50-oddvolunteersand entertainers.

Mostdance-goersweredressedin early-timecostumeastheytwirled, shimmiedandjivedto‘Katikati’s 1920sman’BrettLoweandhis 12-piececrewofmusiciansand soundtechnicians.

Dancerswereontheirfeetfrom 7pmtowellafter11pm,withmusic from1875–whentheUlsterIrisharrived inKatikati–througheachdecadetothe 1950s.

KatikatiTheatre’s JulieThomas,asGrace FletcherDiLogan, asAdelaStewart,and JeanEltringham,as maidFlora,performed ahilariousskitofa ratherdubiously-

acquiredpiano–basedonFletchers actualpiano,whichshebroughtwith herfromIrelandin1875toprovide musictothesettlementoftheday.

Katikatiexperiencedawildweekend ofunprecedentedhighwind,which leftroofsandfencesdamaged,fallen treesandcancelledeventsin itswake.

KatikatiVolunteerFireBrigadedeputy chieffireofficerCraigGraysaidhis station’sfirefightersattended29callouts in14hours,from3.30amto5pmon Sunday.

OneKatikatihouselostmostofitsroof. “Thereisalotofdamagedroofs[fromthe wind]inKatikatiatthemoment,”said Gray.

“Itwasanironroof,andabout90% ofitwaslost.Thehousewasfacing northwestandovertheestuary–soithad takenthefullbruntofthewind.Alotof damagewasrooftileslifting,ironroofs lifting,shedsandfencesblowingdown andfallentrees.”

Tietrampolinesdown

Unsecuredtrampolineswerealsosent flying–onelandedintheestuary’s mangroves.“Wehadaboutfour trampolines–becausetheyhadn’tbeen secured–onehadblownaboutfour housesdowntheroad,”saidGray.

“Themessagewewanttogetoutisthat ifyouhavetrampolinesandyouknowit’s goingtobebadweather–pleasetiethem down.”

WindsstartedtopickupinKatikati Fridayevening.Katikati150th AnniversaryCommitteechairJohn Clementssaidby7.30amSaturdaya callwasmadetopulldowntheerected marqueeroofsoverthenewTownSquare duetowind.“Ithadallbuckledandpoles werebentandthewindwasliftingthe wholetentup–itwastoodangerous.”

Treefallsatcollege

Thebrigadewascalledtoafallentree oncollegegroundsonBeachRdabout 10amSaturday,whichcuttraffictoone lane.“Wecutitdown.One,wetookall thebranchesoffthetrunksokidscouldn’t climbonitandgetinjured;andtwo,we cutitrightbacktotheschoolfenceso peoplecouldstillusethefootpath,”said Gray.

KatikatiCollegeprincipalLouise Buckleyconfirmedasilverbirchtree hadtumbled,andtheschoolwillreplant somethinginitsplace.Asforcollege buildings,minordamagetoguttering

andsomeboundary fenceshadoccurred, saidBuckley.“We’dlike toacknowledgeour propertyteamfortheir additionalworkoverthe weekendinsecuringour schoolgrounds.They wentaboveandbeyond.”

PolicehadtostoptrafficandKatikatiVolunteer FireBrigadecutdownatreethatfellonBeachRd 10amSaturday.

150theventscanned ClementssaidaplannedSaturday officialopeningofthenew60m2jettyat theUretaraLandingonBeachRd–part ofthe150thUlsterarrivalevents–hadto bepostponed.

“Theopeningwastotakeplace11am withiwi,kapahaka,atreeplanting,a fewboatssailinguptheriver,andan unveilingofaplaquebythecommunity board.Thiswascalledoffduetothe wind.”

The150thmorningmarketshifted indoorsintoPātukiManawaDigitalHub; andKatikatiConcertBand’safternoon entertainmentwascancelled,said Clements.

From11.30amSaturdayPoliceasked motoriststoavoidStateHighway2at WhakamāramaastheSH2-PahoiaRd intersectionwasblockedbyfallenpower polesandtrees.Noinjurieswerereported buttrafficexperiencedmajordelays.

“Thosewindswerenorth-west–so they’vecomedownfromthe[Kaimai] ranges,soyouwereprobablygetting stronglocalisedgustswithterrain enhancementfromtheranges.The 130km/hmarkisgettingupintoour propersevergalearea.”

WotherspoonsaidKatikatidoesn’t usuallygetstrongnorth-westerlygusts–“soit’sanunusualdirectionwhichmakes itfeelstronger”.

JulieGray(neeStewart)andhusbandPeter Graybroughttheirdaughtersandpartners andfourgrandchildrentoKatikati,withall attendingtheSettlers’DancelastSaturday evening.

ButfortheGrayfamily,includingJulie’s brotherBrianStewart,hissonBraxton StewartandnieceSarahStevenson,the 150theventsweremuchmorethanadance. “GeorgeVeseyStewartwasmygreat-greatgrandfather,”saidJulieGray.“Myhusband PeterGray’sgreat-grandfatherwasWilliam JohnGray.”

GeorgeVeseyStewartbecameknownas Katikati’sfounderafterhebroughttwo ship-loadsofsettlerstoNewZealand,in 1875and1878tosettleinKatikati;and waselectedTaurangaCounty’sfirstmayor in1882,accordingtoWesternBayof PlentyCommunityArchivesCollection (WBOPCAC).Oftenregardedasthesecond mostimportantsettlerinKatikatiafter Stewart,WilliamJohnGrayemigratedto NZonhisownin1875.Hemovedfrom NgāruawāhiatoKatikatiaround1878andas anengineer,constructedbridgesontheroad toWaihi,accordingtoWBOPCAC.

Juliesaidhergreat-great-grandfatherand herhusband’sgreat-grandfatherworked togetherbuildingKatikatitownship,which

wasfirstnamedWaterfordafteraplace backhome.“IgrewupinTaurangaand myhusbandPeterinTePuke.Overthe yearswe’vehadaconnectionwithKatikati, attendedevents,andhavevolunteeredat AthenreeHomestead.”

JuliesaidKatikatiandherfamilyboth haveawell-researchedrecordoftheirhistory thankstothelateEllenMcCormack(nee Macmillan),amuch-respectedKatikati historianwhocreatedthetown’sarchives –nowcalledWesternBayofPlenty CommunityArchivesCollection.Shespent almosthalfacenturygatheringthehistory ofKatikati,andreceivedtheQueen’sService Medal(QSM)forherworkin2002.“Ithink thetownisreallyluckytohavehadsomeone whodidsomuchwork–becausenowithas suchagoodrecordoftheUlsterhistory.

“Foruspersonally,wehavesuchawellresearchedrecordofourfamilyhistory.Every timeEllenwouldfindsomethingonour family,shewouldcallusandsendusacopy.”

Developawareness

JulieandPeterbroughttheirdaughters andpartners,andtheirfourgrandchildren tothe150thevents“sotheycandevelop theirawarenessandappreciationoftheir descendantsandtheirfamilyhistory”.

“I’velovedtheopportunitytohaveadance withmylittlegrandsons–forthemtosee whatdanceswerelike[backthen],”saidJulie, whothankedKatikati’s150thanniversary committeefororganisingtheevents.

Lookingbackonhergreat-greatgrandfather’slife,Juliesaidherfamilyhad beentoldGeorgewasavisionary.“Wewent backtoIreland.Thepeoplewhoowned hisfarm,ithadbeenintheirfamilyfor80 years.Whenwemetthemtheysaidhewas avisionary.Theytoldushehadalinenmill

land.”JuliesaidGeorgebroughtmorethan 4000settlerstoNZ.“Hewasverybrave[to leadpeoplehereinthosetimes].”

George’splanswerewellthoughtoutin termsofwhohebroughttoNZtoo,said Julie.“Hemadesuretherewasdoctor,a teacher,aministerintheparty.Theywere youngmentohelpthefarmersandyoung womentohelpinhomes.”

Speakingofthechallengesfacedbysettlers ontheirarrival,JuliesaidPeterstillholdsa diarywrittenbyhisgreatgrand-fatheron hisjourneytoNZ.“Itmakesourlivestoday seemveryeasy.”

It’stimeforRealChange

Focus

Ourcouncilmustgetbacktobasics.ThefirstjobistoappointanewChief Executivewhowantstoworkcloselywiththecouncilandthecommunity. Wealsoneedastrategicreviewofthecouncil’sroleandpurpose.Wemust involveallofourcommunitiesinthatprocess,notdoitbehindcloseddoors.

Efficiency

Wecannotaffordfurtherbigratesincreasessothefullstrategicreviewmust havesavingsatitscore.Ourcouncil’soverheadsarehigherthanothersimilar councilsandwecannolongerafford“BusinessasUsual”.Thiswillrequire anopendiscussionwiththecommunityaboutcouncilservicesandwhereyou wantustofocus.

Openness

Thebiggestcomplaintaboutcouncil,afterhighrates,isaperceptionthat counciltalksdowntothepublic.Weneedleaderswhocommunicatethe newsofcouncilwithoutspin--thetoughstuffaswellashappynews.We needamorehumblecouncilwithagenuineopennesstotheideasofothers.

Transparency

Wehavemadeprogresswithpublishedworkshopnotesandmoreopen debateatcouncilmeetings.Nextstepsaregenuineengagementwiththe public,including‘nochange’asanoptionduringconsultationexercisesand anenlargedroleforcommunityboards.Residentsshouldnotbesurprisedby thecouncil’sdecision-makingprocess.
