NextweekendKatikatiwilltravel 150yearsbackintimewithaseries ofeventstomarkthearrivalofthe UlsterIrishsettlersin1875.

Thesports,music,clothing,vehicles, transport,workandhistoryofKatikatis earlydayswillbeonshowfromnextFriday, September12toSunday,September14.

OrganisedbytheKatikati150th AnniversaryCommittee,theeventswould “recognisethehistoricalarrivaloftheUlster Irish[toKatikati]onSeptember16,1875, whilealsoatthesametimerecognisingthat Māoriwereherefirst,”saidJohnClements.

AccordingtoWesternBayofPlenty CommunityArchivesCollection (WBOPCAC),ashipnamedtheCarisbrooke CastlevoyagedfromLiverpool,England, andarrivedinAuckland,NewZealand,on September8,1875,with238ofGeorge VeseyStewart’ssettlerson-board.They travelledontoKatikativiaTauranga,arriving afewdayslater.Stewart,whobecameknown asthetown’sfounder,alsobroughtasecond partytoNewZealand,withseveralpassengers fromEnglandandScotland,aboardtheLady Jocelyn–whicharrivedinAucklandon August17,1878,accordingtoWBOPCAC.

“RecognisingthearrivalofUlsterIrish settlersin1875,thethemefortheweekend willbe‘TravelThroughTime’withevents focusedonthetown’shistory,thepresentand thefuture,”saidClements,whourgedthe wholecommunitytogetinvolved. Theentertainmentforthenight–which runsfrom7pm-11pm–willbeledbya gentlemanbecomingknownas‘Katikati’s 1920sman’BrettLowe,whorevelsin everythingfromearlyera.

ConnectedwithKatikati150th AnniversaryCommitteeandSettlers’ DanceorganiserTerelleCarroll,Lowehas preparedamusicalfeastwhichinvitesthe wholecommunitytodancethroughthe decadesfrom1875tothe1950s.

“We’vegotsaxophones,violins,trumpets –allsortsofinstruments[whichwillbe played]bya12-pieceband,”saidthe multi-instrumentalist.

“Alotofbandmemberswillplaymore thanoneinstrumentandthey’llbe swappingthemaround.Mostoftheband ismadeupoflocals,fromasfarawayas TaurangaandWaihi,butwe’vegotafew comingfromAucklandtoo.”

Lowesaidthebandwouldperform inearlyeracostumes.“Manyofthe instrumentswewillplayareactuallyold instrumentsfromthattime.”

Dance-goerscanexpecttohearsongs from1875–whentheUlsterIrishsettlers arrivedinKatikati–througheachdecade tothe1950s.“Peoplewillgettoenjoya journeythrough75yearsofmusicinone evening,”Lowesaid.

“Allthesongswewillusearetheoriginal compositionthatwouldhavebeenused backthen,”saidLowe.

“We’llplaydancesliketheCharleston andthetango,andwe’lldomusicthat FredAstaireandGingerRogersdancedto inthe1930s,suchasclassicjazzstandards andshowtunes.ThentherewillbeGlenn Millerandbigbandmusicfromthe1940s –sowe’vegotabigmixofmusictoplay!”

Lowesaidifpeoplewanttocomedressed up,theycanpickanerafromthepresent rightbacktoVictoriantimes“andthey’ll lookthepartforatleastonepartofthe night”.

Settlers’danceorganiserTerelleCarroll saidshehadafantasticteambehindher tobringtheeventtolifenextweekend–includingLowe,whohasabackgroundin performingandrunningsemi-professional bandscoveringearlyeramusic.

ShebelievedLowebringshugetalent totheevent–hecanplaythepiano, trumpet,saxophone,banjo,“alittlebitof guitar”plusthedrums,xylophone,ukelele “andawholelotofotherstuff!”“Itwas reallyjustanideaandI’vehadalotof supporttomakeithappen,”saidCarroll.

Theteamoptedtore-createasettlers’ danceasthepinnacleeventforKatikati’s 150thanniversaryweekendbecausesuch aneventwasoneofthesettlers’favourite past-times,Carrollsaid.

“Historytellsus,backinthosedays–if theyhadatennisclubget-togetherora roadingmeetingitusuallyalwaysended inadance.Dancingwasoneofthefew wayspeoplecouldsocialiseinwhatwould havebeenaveryentertainment-vacant

earlyNewZealand.” Backwhenthetown wasonlyjustbeingformedtherewouldn’t havebeenmanyplacesthatpeoplecould gather–“sotheydancedaftereveryevent oroccasionatpeople’shomes–suchas atHughandAdelaStewart’sAthenree Homestead”.

Carrollsaidmusicanddancewere waysthesettlerscouldconnectasthey wouldhavedonebackhomeinIreland. “Manysettlersbroughttheirmusicand instrumentswiththem.”
