Katikati NEWS AKatikatibusinessownerhas“had enough”afterherbeautyclinicwas brokenintoSaturdaynight–the thirdtimeinthelastthreeyears.
DreamersBeautyClinicdirector SuzanneBullivantsaidsecuritycameras capturedfootageofapersoninsideher JocelynStcliniconAugust23about 11.30pm.
“I’vehadenough,”saidBullivant.The clinicwasbrokenintoDecember2023, andthepersonresponsiblethenwent throughanddisruptedthewholeclinic andstoleallherretailproducts,shesaid. Theclinichadalsobeenbrokenintosix monthsbeforethat.
Thistimeherofficewastrashedand retailproductsandvaluablesweretaken.
“I’vebeenoperatingDreamersatthis site[onJocelynSt]forabout20yearsbut I’vebeen[operatingDreamers]inKatikati forforeverandit’sonlyinthelastthree yearsthatI’vehadsomuchtaken.”
TheAugust23rdbreak-insawan offenderforcetheirwayintoBullivant’s officeviaahighwindow.“Hejust ransackedthisroomandtookallmyretail productsIhadstoredonashelfinhere andsomevaluables,butdidn’ttakemy laptoponmydesk.”
Bullivantsaidtheoffenderhadgoneinto thehallwayandescapedthroughtheback door.Theclinic’ssecuritycameras,which caughtimagesoftheoffender,setoffthe securityalarm.
BullivantsaidPolicearrivedwithsearch dogs,whichtrackedascentdownthe hillatthebackoftheclinic’sproperty, towardsthelibraryandupthesteep
concretepathbesidetheTalismanDrive officebuildingstoCarisbrookeSt. Bullivanthadhandedhersecurity footagetopolice.“Hewasreallytallguy fromthefootage.”
Someunusualincidentsoccurredat Dreamerslastweek,whichBullivant isnotsurearelinkedtotheweekend break-in.“Wehadaclothesbasketstolen fromourgarage.Wealsothinkourspraytantentwasmovedaround.Idon’tknow ifit’sthesamepeopleorsomeoneor…”

“Apaneloffivejudgescritiqueeachphoto anddecidetheirscores.Iftheyallagree,you getthatscore.Ifthere’sdifferenceofopinion, theydebateit,”saidMenendez.“Inmycase, IthoughtIgotasilverandwassoexcited. Thenonejudgechallengedthescoreand talkedituptogold.Iwasspeechless!”
TheresultnamedMenendezafinalistfor ProfessionalFamilyPhotographerofthe Yearcategoryinthe2025IrisAwards–her highestaccoladesinceshebegansnapping Katikatiandallitsfacesin2018.
IntotalMenendezwoneightawards–a bronzeandsilverinLandscape,twosilversin Nature;plusagold,twosilversandabronze intheFamilycategory.
Eightawardsmatchesherawardtallylast year–buttherewasnogoldthen–and trumpsher2023winofthreeawards.
Her2025Goldawardwinnerwasa photographofafamilyshe’dcapturedthree times.“Theyalwaystrytogettogether annually.Thisone,theywereallthere.”

Everyonewantsthestraight-onimage whereallsubjectslookatthecamera,said Menendez.“Buttogetthatspecialimage–it’saboutgettingtoknowyoursubjects.
“Igetthatstraight-onimagedonefirst, thenit’s:‘Heyguys,whataboutthis?’Imight trythesamethingwithheapsoffamiliesbut theyallresponddifferently.”
Whilesomearekeentojumpwaves, othersstayreserved.“Thatisfinetoo,”said Menendez.“They’llgetthephototheywant.” Now,shehasrepeatcustomersbooking hertocapturetheirfamiliesyearafteryear. However,herstartinphotographywasn’t trouble-free.
Menendezmovedbacktoherhometown, Katikati,in2016withherhusbandandthree boys.Prior,shehadacareerinmarketing. “I’vealwaysdonesomekindofart.Iwas apainter,drawerandIdidanarthistory degreeatuniversity.”
Butitwashavingchildrenthatledherto acamera:“Myhusbandbroughthomea niceoneandIwantedtoknowhowtouseit properly.Whenwemovedhereitfeltlikea goodtimetolearn.”

FrontstepsinKatikati Shefriendsfirstandpostedtheresultson socialmedia,askingthewidercommunity toparticipateinexchangeforfoodorfund donationtoKatikatiCommunityFoodbank. Ittookoff.“InLevel2Iextendedittosmall businessesbecauseitwasallaboutsupporting localatthetime.”
Menendezwashonouredforthiswork attheNZMuralContestin2022,witha themeof“celebratingunsungheroesof2020. ImagesofsixheroeswhohelpedKatikati’s communityduring2020’slockdownwere paintedbyartistsonthetown’sAnglican Church.Menendezwasoneofthem.
Hergenerousactalsobecameablessingin disguise–manyfamiliesandbusinessowners shemetthenhavebecometoday’sclients. “I’mluckyIgetgreatlocalsupport.Ithink thatwasmaybepartofit.”

CouncilregularlyreviewsitsReserve ManagementPlans(RMPs)toreflect communityneedsandexpectations, supportagrowinganddiverse population,alignwithupdatedcouncil rules,policiesandstrategies,includenew reserves,andguidefuturedevelopment andfundingdecisions.
TheKaimaiWardRMPwaslast reviewedandadoptedbycouncilin2016.
WBOPDCreservesandfacilities managerPeterWatsonsaidthisplan shows“howwe’lllookafterourreserves intheyearsahead,makingsurethere’sa goodmixofplacestoplay,enjoynature andgetinvolved”.
“Italsosupportsthegreatworkalready beingdoneinpestcontrolandhelpsour communityvolunteerstokeepmakinga difference,”Watsonsaid.
Theadoptionofthenewplan,by council’sStrategyandPolicyCommittee, followspublicconsultation earlierthisyear,inwhich71submissions
werereceived.Inadoptingtheplan,the decisionwasmadetoformallyname ninereserves–someoftheseretained the‘informal’namesbywhichtheywere alreadyknown,whilesomeweregiven newnames.
Undertheplan,MindenLookout willretainitscurrentname,with heritageinformationaddedtothesite, includingrecognitionofthenameTe Rangituanehu,whichwasprovidedby manawhenua.
Parkkeepsname TePunaQuarryParkwillalsokeepits name–ratherthanchangingtoTePuna QuarryReserve–with acommitmenttowork withtangatawhenua andinterestedparties ondevelopingcultural presenceinitiatives, suchasartworks, sculpturesandsignage atthepark.
