AKatikatibusinessownerhas“had enough”afterherbeautyclinicwas brokenintoSaturdaynight–the thirdtimeinthelastthreeyears.

DreamersBeautyClinicdirector SuzanneBullivantsaidsecuritycameras capturedfootageofapersoninsideher JocelynStcliniconAugust23about 11.30pm.

“I’vehadenough,”saidBullivant.The clinicwasbrokenintoDecember2023, andthepersonresponsiblethenwent throughanddisruptedthewholeclinic andstoleallherretailproducts,shesaid. Theclinichadalsobeenbrokenintosix monthsbeforethat.

Thistimeherofficewastrashedand retailproductsandvaluablesweretaken.

“I’vebeenoperatingDreamersatthis site[onJocelynSt]forabout20yearsbut I’vebeen[operatingDreamers]inKatikati forforeverandit’sonlyinthelastthree yearsthatI’vehadsomuchtaken.”

TheAugust23rdbreak-insawan offenderforcetheirwayintoBullivant’s officeviaahighwindow.“Hejust ransackedthisroomandtookallmyretail productsIhadstoredonashelfinhere andsomevaluables,butdidn’ttakemy laptoponmydesk.”

Bullivantsaidtheoffenderhadgoneinto thehallwayandescapedthroughtheback door.Theclinic’ssecuritycameras,which caughtimagesoftheoffender,setoffthe securityalarm.

BullivantsaidPolicearrivedwithsearch dogs,whichtrackedascentdownthe hillatthebackoftheclinic’sproperty, towardsthelibraryandupthesteep

concretepathbesidetheTalismanDrive officebuildingstoCarisbrookeSt. Bullivanthadhandedhersecurity footagetopolice.“Hewasreallytallguy fromthefootage.”

Someunusualincidentsoccurredat Dreamerslastweek,whichBullivant isnotsurearelinkedtotheweekend break-in.“Wehadaclothesbasketstolen fromourgarage.Wealsothinkourspraytantentwasmovedaround.Idon’tknow ifit’sthesamepeopleorsomeoneor…”

Bullivantdidn’twantherstaffhavingto dealwithsuchincidents.“[Anothertime] oneofmystaffwentintoourreception areaandfoundamanwithafellowstaff member’shandbaginhishand,saying he’dfounditoutside.”

officefelt“violating”.“Owningasmall businessisalwayshard,buthavingthese break-inshashitusemotionally.Wejust wanttocometoworkandfocusonwhat weneedtodo.Ourclientshavejustbeen sosupportive,andthatmakesusfeelvery special.”

Bullivantaskedanyonewhohas suspicioussecurityfootageinthevicinity ofherclinicfromovernightAugust23to alsopassittopolice.

Apolicespokespersonsaidenquiriesare ongoingfollowingthereportedburglary atacommercialaddressonJocelynStat about11pmonAugust23,whereentry tothepremiseswasgained.“Ifanyonehas anyinformationthatcouldassistPolice, pleasecontact105andreferencefile number250824/0245.”

KatikatiphotographerAnna Menendezcouldn’tbelievewhat shewaswatchingonlivestream thismonth.

The2025NewZealandInstituteof ProfessionalPhotography’sIrisAwardswere beingjudgedlivebyapaneloffive–and oneappraiserhadchallengedthescoreofher entryofafamilyonabeachbeingsplashed byawave,exudingpurejoyandsurprisein theirexpressions.

“Apaneloffivejudgescritiqueeachphoto anddecidetheirscores.Iftheyallagree,you getthatscore.Ifthere’sdifferenceofopinion, theydebateit,”saidMenendez.“Inmycase, IthoughtIgotasilverandwassoexcited. Thenonejudgechallengedthescoreand talkedituptogold.Iwasspeechless!”

TheresultnamedMenendezafinalistfor ProfessionalFamilyPhotographerofthe Yearcategoryinthe2025IrisAwards–her highestaccoladesinceshebegansnapping Katikatiandallitsfacesin2018.

IntotalMenendezwoneightawards–a bronzeandsilverinLandscape,twosilversin Nature;plusagold,twosilversandabronze intheFamilycategory.

Eightawardsmatchesherawardtallylast year–buttherewasnogoldthen–and trumpsher2023winofthreeawards.

Her2025Goldawardwinnerwasa photographofafamilyshe’dcapturedthree times.“Theyalwaystrytogettogether annually.Thisone,theywereallthere.”

Knowyoursubjects

Everyonewantsthestraight-onimage whereallsubjectslookatthecamera,said Menendez.“Buttogetthatspecialimage–it’saboutgettingtoknowyoursubjects.

“Igetthatstraight-onimagedonefirst, thenit’s:‘Heyguys,whataboutthis?’Imight trythesamethingwithheapsoffamiliesbut theyallresponddifferently.”

Whilesomearekeentojumpwaves, othersstayreserved.“Thatisfinetoo,”said Menendez.“They’llgetthephototheywant.” Now,shehasrepeatcustomersbooking hertocapturetheirfamiliesyearafteryear. However,herstartinphotographywasn’t trouble-free.

Menendezmovedbacktoherhometown, Katikati,in2016withherhusbandandthree boys.Prior,shehadacareerinmarketing. “I’vealwaysdonesomekindofart.Iwas apainter,drawerandIdidanarthistory degreeatuniversity.”

Butitwashavingchildrenthatledherto acamera:“Myhusbandbroughthomea niceoneandIwantedtoknowhowtouseit properly.Whenwemovedhereitfeltlikea goodtimetolearn.”

Covid

Afteronlinecoursesandaworkshop,in 2018Menendezaskedfriendsifshecould

capturethem.“Atsomepointyoujusthave todecidetocallyourselfaphotographer,soI tooktheplunge.”

Allwasgoingwell:“Iwasstartingtoget bookings,thenCovidhitandovernightI losteverything.Italljustshutdown.Allmy contractworkgotcancelledimmediatelyand thatwastheendofthhat.” ”

Orsoshethoughtt.On lockdownathome, Menendezsaw,onssocial media,theFrontSteeps projectintheUS.

“Itwasa fundraiserand community connection projectthat somewomen startedwhere theyjustwent aroundinCovid takingphotosof peopleontheirfronnt doorstepsinreturnfor donationstocharityy.“I thought:‘Well,I’llddothat here’becauseIreally y wantedto takephotosagain,I I wantted d tosee people,anditwasagoodthingtodo.”

Shefriendsfirstandpostedtheresultson socialmedia,askingthewidercommunity toparticipateinexchangeforfoodorfund donationtoKatikatiCommunityFoodbank. Ittookoff.“InLevel2Iextendedittosmall businessesbecauseitwasallaboutsupporting localatthetime.”

Menendezwashonouredforthiswork attheNZMuralContestin2022,witha themeof“celebratingunsungheroesof2020. ImagesofsixheroeswhohelpedKatikati’s communityduring2020’slockdownwere paintedbyartistsonthetown’sAnglican Church.Menendezwasoneofthem.

Hergenerousactalsobecameablessingin disguise–manyfamiliesandbusinessowners shemetthenhavebecometoday’sclients. “I’mluckyIgetgreatlocalsupport.Ithink thatwasmaybepartofit.”

Now,notwodaysarethesame.Menendez couldbeshootingfamilies,expectantparents, businesses,councileventsorcommunity happenings.“I’mreallybadwithroutineso Ilovethateachdayisdifferent,andIlove meetingpeopleandbuildingarapportwith them.ThereisnoproductIfindboring–I’ll doanything–becauseyouneverknowwhat you’regoingtomakewhenyou’reaskedto takeaphoto.”

What’sthesecrettotakingagreatphoto? “Whenitcomestopeopleit’shavinga connection.Itdoesn’tmatterhowtechincally greatyouare,ifyoucan’tgetthepersonto connectwithyouoreachotherthenit’sjust aphoto,”Menendezsaid.

“Evenwithlandscapeornature,ifyou’re

notconnectedwithwhatyou’relookingat, you’rejustliterallylookingatascene.Butif youlookatit,going:‘Ilovethewaythelight issparklingonthewater–howdoImake thatwork?’thenyougetreallyinvolved.I finditreallyrelaxingdoingthat.”

In2025’sIrisAwards1405images werelive-judged,whichincluded1118 fromNZ,284fromAustraliaandtwo internationalentries.Fromthese,1125 imagesreceivedanaward–whichcomprised 18Golddistinctions,103Golds,194Silver distinctions,370Silversand440Bronze –includingfivecategoryfinalistsandtwo categorywinnersfromtheBOP.

AnaccreditedNZIPPprofessionalportrait photographer,Menendezbelievesentering theIrisawardsandconnectingwithNZIPP membershadsignificantlyimproved herphotographyacrossallgenresand supportedthegrowthofherbusiness.“It’sso importanttofindyourownconnectionsand communitysothatyoucankeepgrowing, learningandimprovingyourart.”

Councilhasadoptedarefreshed KaimaiWardReserveManagement Plan,settingthedirectionforhow the63reservesintheKaimaiWard willbecaredforanddeveloped duringthenextnineyears.

TheplanincludedanupdatedPest ManagementPolicy,whichhasbeen expandedtoalignwiththeBayof PlentyRegionalCouncil’sRegionalPest ManagementPlan,andacknowledgedthe roleoftangatawhenua,volunteersand communityeducation.

CouncilregularlyreviewsitsReserve ManagementPlans(RMPs)toreflect communityneedsandexpectations, supportagrowinganddiverse population,alignwithupdatedcouncil rules,policiesandstrategies,includenew reserves,andguidefuturedevelopment andfundingdecisions.

TheKaimaiWardRMPwaslast reviewedandadoptedbycouncilin2016.

WBOPDCreservesandfacilities managerPeterWatsonsaidthisplan shows“howwe’lllookafterourreserves intheyearsahead,makingsurethere’sa goodmixofplacestoplay,enjoynature andgetinvolved”.

“Italsosupportsthegreatworkalready beingdoneinpestcontrolandhelpsour communityvolunteerstokeepmakinga difference,”Watsonsaid.

Theadoptionofthenewplan,by council’sStrategyandPolicyCommittee, followspublicconsultation earlierthisyear,inwhich71submissions

werereceived.Inadoptingtheplan,the decisionwasmadetoformallyname ninereserves–someoftheseretained the‘informal’namesbywhichtheywere alreadyknown,whilesomeweregiven newnames.

Undertheplan,MindenLookout willretainitscurrentname,with heritageinformationaddedtothesite, includingrecognitionofthenameTe Rangituanehu,whichwasprovidedby manawhenua.

TePunaQuarryParkwillalsokeepits name–ratherthanchangingtoTePuna QuarryReserve–with acommitmenttowork withtangatawhenua andinterestedparties ondevelopingcultural presenceinitiatives, suchasartworks, sculpturesandsignage atthepark.

Councilalsoagreed totakeanotherlookat theŌmokoroaDomain ConceptPlan,which wasadoptedinOctober 2018.Carparkingand anadditionalaccess roadaretwoofthe itemswhicharelikely tobeconsideredinareviewoftheplan, Watsonsaid.

LedbyLurlinePlummerand herdedicatedteam,thedaywasa fantasticcelebrationoflinedancing thatbroughttogether116dancers foranafternoonofnon-stopfun from11am-4pm. Theevent,whichtookplace insideKatikatiWarMemorialHall, wasatestamenttothepopularityof linedancing,saidMuralTownLine DancersmemberJoHurne. “Dancerstraveledfromfarand wide,withgroupsarrivingfrom asfarasHamilton,Cambridge, Matamata,TeAwamutu, Papakura,Papatoetoe,Ōmokoroa, Tauranga,WaihĪ,WelcomeBay, Taupō,,Rotorua,Whangamatā, Whakatāne,andTeAroha.
