upwiththebusyladywhohasbeen bestowedaLifetimeVolunteerAward byVolunteeringServicesforgiving30 yearsofservicetohercommunity.Itall beganwhenGrahamarrivedintown backin1995,andsawanewspaper advertlookingforhelpersforKatikati’s

ChristmasFloatParade.Now,three decadeson,she’sthefaceofthetown’s schoolholidayprogrammeandregular volunteeratKatikatiCommunity Centre,withherhelpinghandsinlotsof ‘pies’–fromhealthexpostocommunity picnicstohelpinghosttheFestivalof

Lunchwasprovidedthankstosupplies fromKatikati’scommunitybreakfasts, andbusinessesSunny’sandHammer Hardwaregenerouslyprovidedspot prizes.TheKatikatiMenzShedalsolent theirsupportontheday–andarenow collaboratingwithoneoftheyouth leadersonanewskateboardrackfor thepark.

KCLDSteeringGroupyouth connectorLeticiaKuizinassaidfeedback ontheeventfromwhānauandyouth hadbeenoverwhelminglypositive,with manyalreadyaskingwhenthenext youthevent–aScooterLabDay–will beheld.

“Ouryouthcrewwereincredible.They helpedsetup,welcomedpeoplein,and

broughtsomuchlaughterandjoytothe space.Theirpresencereallyshapedthe toneofthewholeevent,”saidKuizinas.

Thesix-year-oldstartsanimatedly chattingaboutstayinguplatewithhis cousinsandafteratwo-weekbreak,the bondisrecementedandthereading enthusiasticallybegins…

Children

“Iparticularlylovekids,”saidGraham. “That’swhereI’mmostcomfortable.” Why?“Oh,youjustlearnfromthem allthetime–likeyou’reteachingthem, butyou’relearningfromthemtoo,”said Graham,whoenjoysstartingherweek withtwohoursofreadingwithKatikati Primarystudents.

“They’resoopen.Ilovethatabout them;youknow,asadults,weclose offabit.Weshowthepartsof ourselvesthatwewanttobeseen, whereasjustlikekids,Istillliketobe silly…Idon’tknow…Igetthem, andtheygetme,”saidGraham,whois alsoknownfordonatingfreshfruitand plantsfromhergarden.

AtJune’sKatiChat,the56-year-oldwas recognisedfor30yearsofvolunteerwork inhercommunityofKatikati.Graham wasenjoyinghearingaboutothersbeing celebrated,whenshewaspresentedwitha LifetimeVolunteerAward,byVolunteering Services,forheroutstandingcontribution.

AChristmasfloat…

GrahamtoldKatikatiNewsthatwhen sheansweredanewspaperadvertcalling forvolunteerstohelpwithKatikati’s ChristmasFloatParadebackin1995,she neverimagineditwouldsparka30-year journeyincommunityservice.

“Ithoughtthatwouldbeagoodwayto meetpeople.Itallstartedfromthere...”

volunteeringatKatikatiResourceCentre–todaycalledKatikatiCommunityCentre –thentheschoolholidayprogrammeand after-schoolcare,andontoallkindsof exposandeventshostedbythecentre.

“ImetChrisRidder[formerKatikati ResourceCentremanager]andshe’djust startedtheschoolholidayprogrammethe yearbefore.Iwaslike:‘Yeah,we’llgiveita whirl’andI’mstillthere.ThenofcourseI justbecamepartandparcelofthecentre,” saidGraham,whoclocksup30yearson theprogrammenextApril.

Theschool’sliteracyspecialistteacher AndreaMenhinicksaidGrahamisahuge assettotheirteamofvolunteerreaders.

“Sheformsbeautifulrelationships[with thestudents],she’sjustsopleasedto seethekids,andtheypickthatup.But whatIfindexceptionalaboutheristhat evenwhenstudentsareontheirwayto assembly,andtheyhavetojustsitandwait –Shonaistherewithachildandabook sothatshemakestheuseofeveryminute,” saidMenhinick.“Sheissoinvestedinthe children.”

ApregnantGrahamandpartnerPeter CoxhadmovedtoKatikatifromthe UnitedKingdomwiththeirthree-year-old daughterHannahin1995andboughta lifestyleblocksouthoftown.

“Hannahwasinkindyandit [volunteering]wasjustawaytogetinto thecommunityreally.”

Theparadeworkmorphedinto

inrecentyears,communitypicnicsand theFestivalofCultures.“Thisisabig oneforme.Ilovethis.”Why?“Ijustfeel itbringsourcommunitytogetherand it’ssolovelytoseehowmanydifferent cultureslivehere.”With2025beingthe thirdinstalment,Grahamsmileswhen shethinksofhowtheRSE(Recognised SeasonalEmployer)workersgetsointoit: “Ilovethatthey’resoenthusiastic”.

Howdidshevolunteerwhenshehad twopreschool-agedkids?“PeterandIwere gardeners,soIwasluckyenoughtohave bothofmygirlsathomewhentheywere

Afternearlythreedecades,Grahamsaid she’spracticallypartofthebuilding:“The centre’sbeensuchabigpartofmylife –andIguessI’vebecomepartofittoo. SomeofthekidsI’mworkingwithnow arethechildrenofpeopleIdidclassesfor yearsago.It’sprettyspecial.”

Sowhatkeepsdrivinghertokeepgiving? “Volunteeringissogoodforthesoul. Onceyoustart,you’llseehowifeveryone gavealittlebitback,ourcommunities wouldallbethriving.”

Sheknowsforsome“it’snottheirbag” butforGraham,“I’mapeopleperson.I loveit!”

Councilseeksinformationonrubbishdumping

TheWesternBayofPlentyDistrict Councilisseekinginformation aboutalargepileofillegally dumpedconcreteatThompson’s Track,nearKatikati.

Itisoneofseveraloffencesatthis locationinrecentmonths.Three largeplasticcontainerswithunknown contentshavealsobeendiscarded downthebank,aswellasgreenwaste, whiteware,furniture,bagsofclothing, andotherhouseholditems,accordingto thecouncil.

WBOPDCsolidwasteoperations leadKatieMcHughsaiditwashoped

someonecouldprovideinformationon wheretheconcretecamefrom.Asof Mondaythisweek,July14,thecouncil hadnotreceivedanytip-offsfromthe publicyet.

McHughencouragedpeopletospeak upaboutthedumping.“Ifyouthink yousawitbeingtransportedorhaveany informationaboutwhereitmighthave comefrom,we’dreallyliketohearfrom you,”shesaid.

“Thefactthatit’sreinforcedconcrete meansit’slikelytohavecomefroma commercialorconstructionsiterather thanaprivatehome.”

CouncilandDOCland

Thompson’sTrackisalegalroad corridorthatcrossestheKaimaiRange betweenKatikatiandManawaru.Past themaintainedgravelledsectionofthe road,itbecomesanunmaintaineddirt track,popularwith4WDusers,hunters, andtrampers.

Thesitewherethewastewasdumped isattheendofthemaintained gravelsection,andspanscounciland DepartmentofConservation(DoC) land.

ThecouncilandDoCareworkingto removetheconcreteandotherdumped waste,withanestimatedclean-upcost ofbetween$25,000and$30,000.

McHughsaiditcostthecouncilabout $150,000ayeartoremoveanddispose ofwasteillegallydumpedacrosstherohe (district).

“Ifweareabletoidentifywhois responsible,weon-chargethosecosts, butthat’softendifficult,asillegal

dumpingusuallyhappensinremoteor hard-to-seeareaswherepeoplethink theywon’tbecaught.”

Thecouncilwasinstallingagateat theentrancetothetrackinthehopeof deterringdumpers.Itrestrictedvehicle access,butpeoplecouldstillaccessthe areaonfootorwithbikes.

Dotherightthing

McHughurgedpeopletodothe rightthinganddisposeofanywaste attheappropriatefacilities.There werecommunityrecyclingandgreen wastecentresatTePuke,Katikatiand Athenree,andagreenwaste-onlycentre inŌmokoroa.

Anygeneralwastethatcouldnotbe

recycledshouldgotoarefusetransfer station–thenearestforWesternBoP residentsbeingatTeMaungaandWaihī, McHughsaid.

DoCoperationssupervisorColette Wisaidtheteamwasdisappointedby thedumpingatThompson’sTrack. “It’ssomeoftheworstwe’veseen,and clean-upsaretakingusawayfromour corework.”

WisaidDoCwasworkingwiththe council“tofindlong-termsolutions”. Dumpingofillegalwastecanbe reportedviatheAntennoapp,by emailinginfo@westernbay.govt.nz,or phoning0800TRASHY. Allreportswouldbetreatedas confidential.

Dogsofallshapesandsizesmay soonhavemoretowagtheirtails about,asKatikaticomestogether toupgradethetown’sDogExercise Parkwithagilityequipment.

ADogTricksWorkshopfrom10am onSunday,July27,atthedogpark is the latestmoveinfundraisingand sponsorship effortsto deckthefacility outwith training and agilityitemsfor Katikati pooches.

The projectbeganwhentheWestern BayofPlenty DistrictCouncilfenced offthedogparkatDonegalReservebut didn’thavethefundstoaddequipment.

Katikatidog ownerPhilChristophersen approached the council, and parks and reserves officer Emma Woods suggested he connect with Katch Katikati to help raise funds

Sponsorship programme

Katch Katikati launched a sponsorship programme and has been approaching

dog-relatedlocalbusinessesandinviting publicdonationstosupporttheproject.

KatikatiMenzShedissettobuild structureslikebalancebeams,bridges, andsit/stayplatforms,whileMetal ArtLtdhasprovidedquotesforagility featuressuchasjump-throughhoopsand tunnels.

“Onceweknowhowmuchwe’veraised inearlyAugust,we’llfinalisethebudget andgetthebestvalueformoney,”said KatchKatikatimanagerJacquiKnight.

“It’llbegreattohaveinteractive features fordogsandownerstoenjoy – it’sa shametohaveafenced space with nothingtodoinside!”

Tosupportthefundraising,

Aongateteresident Bex Tasker, head trainer of Positively Together, is running a Dog Tricks Workshop on July 27 at the park All proceeds will go toward buying or building agility gear

“Agility and trick training are

fantasticforbuildingconfidenceand strengtheningthebondbetweendog andowner,”saidTasker.“I’mthrilledto supportthiscommunityproject.We’llbe teachingfuntrickslikespin,legweaves, hoopjumpsandrollovers–allusing positivereinforcement.”

“WhenwelaunchedRawPawz15years agoattheKatikatiFridaynightmarket, thecommunity[of]Katikatiwasoneof thefirstcommunitiestosupportus,”said CEONitaMaaka.“Thisisourwayof givingback.”

KnightencouragedKatikatidogowners tosupporttheprojectbyattendingthe workshopandsponsoringordonating towardstheequipment.
