Bowledoverwithactivities

Althoughtheofficialbowling seasonhasfinished,Katikati BowlingClubmemberKevin Whitworthwantsthecommunity toknowthatthefacilityisstilla bustlinghiveofactivity.

“Peopledon’tknowaboutalotof theactivitieswerun,unfortunately,” saidWhitworth,whoisaclub representativeofactivities.

“Wehavearangeofgamesandevents onoffertoourclubmembers–but thepublicisalsowelcometocome alongtoenjoythemtoo.”

TheKatikatiBowlingClubhasone naturalturfgreenandoneexcellent artificialgreenonofferforladies’and men’sbowling,withfreecoaching availableonrequest.

Whitworthsaidbowlingforclub membersisfrom1pmonMondays, WednesdaysandSaturdays–“but anyonewhoisinterestedcancome alongandseeiftheywanttojoin,”he said.

PredatorFreeWaihīBeachhas receivedasignificantboostin itsfighttorestorethenatural ecosystemofBowentown,thanks toagenerous$10,000donation fromthePioShoresSportsand CommunityAssociation.

Thefunding,spreadover12months, directlysupportstrappingandmonitoring effortsinthearea,helpingtoprotect nativewildlifeandregeneratebiodiversity.

Thedonationunderscoresthe commitmentofthePioShoresgroup toenvironmentalstewardshipand community-ledconservationinitiatives.

Withongoingpredatorcontrol,the projectaimstoreducetheimpactof invasivespeciessuchasrats,stoats,and possums,whichthreatennativebirds, lizards,andinsects.

“Thisincrediblecontributionfrom thePioShoresSportsandCommunity Associationisagame-changerforour workatBowentown,”saidPredatorFree WaihīBeachco-ordinatorSusanLean.

“Itensuresthatwecancontinueour trappingefforts,expandourmonitoring programmes,andengagemorevolunteers inprotectingouruniquecoastal environment.”

Sofar,Leansaid,thegrouphad eradicatedmorethan2700target predatorsfromtheareaandwere seeingthereturnofbellbird/korimako, morepork/rūrūandbittern/matukuhūrepo.

Grassrootsinitiative

PredatorFreeWaihīBeachisagrassroots initiativededicatedtorestoringnative habitatsthroughstrategicpredatorcontrol andcommunityaction.

Theprojectalignswiththenational PredatorFree2050visionandhasseen growingsuccesswithincreasingsupport fromlocalvolunteers,businesses,and organisations.

“WeareproudtosupportPredatorFree WaihīBeachandthemahibeingdoneto protectourlocalenvironment,”saidPio ShoresassociationtreasurerGailKelly.

“Bowentownisaspecialplace,andwe wanttoseeitthriveforgenerationsto come.Byinvestinginpredatorcontrol, we’reinvestinginafuturewhereour

nativespeciescanflourish.

“Ourassociationalsosupportsother communityfacilitiessuchastheSurf LifesavingClub,BMXtrack,andtennis court.”

Essentialfunding

ThisdonationtoPredatorFreewillhelp fundessentialtrappingequipment,bait, volunteertraining,andmonitoringefforts totrackprogress.

TheongoingworkatBowentown contributestoabroadervisionof makingWaihīBeachasaferhavenfor nativewildlife,ensuringthearea’srich biodiversityispreservedforfuture generations.

Communitymembersarealso

supportingthekaupapabydonatingor sponsoringthroughthePredatorFree WaihīBeachCommunityPartnership Programme.

Fromaslittleas$50,peoplecansponsor atraporatraplinetohelpcontinuethe fightagainstpredators.Theycaneven choosetheirfavouritenativebirdto support.

The2025localgovernmentelectionisa landmarkmomentfortheWesternBayDistrict, andCouncilismakingapushtogetmore peoplebothvotingandstandingforCouncil, moreeasily.

Thisyear’selectionbringssomeofthebiggestchanges toWesternBayofPlentyDistrictCouncil’smake-up indecades—includingthereductionofcouncillors from11tonine,theintroductionoftheWakaKaiUru MāoriWard,andnewcommunityboard‘subdivisions’ toensurefairer,morebalancedrepresentationacross therohe(District).

Thismeanseveryone,exceptforthoselivingon MatakanaandRangiwaeaIslands,willgetthreevotes-

oneforMayor,oneforWardCouncillor(s)andonefor CommunityBoardmembers.(MatakanaIslandand RangiwaeaIslandarenotpartofacommunityboard area,soresidentswillvoteforaMayorandtheirWard Councillor(s).)

Withjust37.6percentofeligiblevotersturningout inthe2022localelections,it’sclearthere’sroomfor moreconnection,moreparticipation,andmoreclarity.

“Wewantpeopletofeelliketheycanaskquestions, understandtheprocess,andfeelrepresented— whetherthey’revotingorstanding,”saidCouncil’s deputyCEOandstrategyandcommunitygeneral managerRachaelDavie.

BetweennowandvotingdayonOctober11,council isrollingoutafewsimplethingstomakethathappen –like90-secondcandidatevideostointroduceyouto yourlocalcandidates,orangevotingbinsineasy-toreachcommunityspots,andanewdigitalpre-election dashboardthatmakesitsimplertoseewhatCouncil’s upto.

WesternBayofPlentyDistrictCouncilwillsoon beginaddingfluoridetothepublicdrinkingwater suppliesatAthenreeandWharawharaaspartofa directivefromtheDirector-GeneralofHealth.

Thedirective,issuedundertheHealthAct1956,requires Counciltobeginfluoridatingthewatersuppliesatthe AthenreeandWharawharawatertreatmentplants.The decisiontorequirefluoridationismadebytheDirectorGeneralofHealth,notlocalcouncils.

Theaffectedareasinclude:WaihīBeach,Athenree,Tanners PointandKatikati,alongwiththereticulatedruralarea throughtoMortonRoad.

FluoridationwillbeginattheAthenreeWaterTreatment PlantinJune,oncethenewlyinstalledequipmentistested andcommissioned.Thesameprocesswilltakeplaceat WharawharainJuly2025,aWesternBayofPlentyDistrict Councilspokespersonsaidinastatement.

“Councilisresponsibleforsafelyimplementingthe directiveandensuringfluorideisaddedwithintheMinistry ofHealth’srecommendedlevels(between0.7and1.0parts permillion).

“Thereisnoexpecteddisruptiontothewatersupply duringthisprocess.”

Fromsawdustto secondchances

Offcutsandleftovermaterialsfromthenewlibrary buildatWaihīBeachareweavingtheirwayintothe communitythrougharecyclingeffortthatisgiving themasecondlifeingardens,schools,farmsandlocal projects.

Closeto170sqmofmaterials–mostlyoffcutsof timber,pilesandplywood–havebeenutilisedby individualsandcommunitygroups,includingthe WaihīBeachMenzShed,WaihīBeachSchooland HabitatforHumanity.

Muchofthetimberwasrecycledviaanon-site “kiosk”runbyconstructioncompanyHawkins,from whichpeoplecouldcollectmaterialsfortheirhome andcommunityprojects.

GarryKirkbride,fromWaihī,usedcut-offtimber pilestoreplaceagardenretainingwallinhis backyard.

“Itwasatyreretainingwalland,althoughitserved itspurpose,itwasugly–weareveryhappywiththe result,”saidKirkbride.

“It’sagreatinitiative,offeringscrapmaterialfreeof chargetothelocals.”

Othermaterialsthatcouldnotbereusedwere recycledwherepossiblethroughothermeans–polystyrenewasreturnedtoExpol,plasterboardwent backtoWinstoneWallboards,metaloffcutstoascrap metaldealerandplasticwassenttosaveBOARD, whoupcyclepackagingwasteintonewbuilding products.

“Ingeneral,asitethissizewouldgenerateupto30 cubicmetresofwaste.Sofar,wehaveredirectedat

BycollectingtheKanTabs,youarehelpingtomakea hugedifferenceinthelifeofachild,saystheKatikatiLions whohavebeenpromotingthegroupsKidneyKanTab Initiative.

“ThelittlethingsthatmightmakeaKidneyKid’sbadday justalittlebettercanhappenbecauseyouhavetakenthe timetosavea‘KanTab’,”saidJoHurneonbehalfofthe KatikatiLions.

Thereareabout3600tabstoakilogram.Oncecollected theyarerecycled,andthefundsraisedaresenttothe KidneyKidsSupportGroupofNewZealandtosupport andassistallthechildrenwithkidneydiseaseandwho needdialysis.

“Everytimeyouopenacan,tearoffthetabandplaceit inyourpocketthenintoa‘KanTabs’canwhenyousee one…somewhereasickchildwillthankyou

Onceyouhavecollectedalargequantityofkantabs pleasetakethemtoyourlocalLionsClub...andthenwe’d allloveitifyoustartcollectingmorealloveragain.”

Themorekantabscollected,themoremoneyraisedfor KidneyKids.

Uponhearingabouttheinitiative,agroupofguysfrom WaihiBeachdecidedtogetonboard.Theynotonly collectedtheKanTabsbutalsoheldasweeptoguesshow manytabswereinthesmallerjar.Thisraisedafurther $300.TheKatikatiLionsvalueandappreciatethesupport,

leasthalfofthat,”saidHawkinssitemanagerJames Reynolds.

“Theaimwastodoasmuchaswecouldforthe community,whiledivertingasmuchwasteawayfrom landfillaspossible.Wealsousedasmanylocalpeople andcompaniesasreasonablypossible.”

TeAraMātauranga–WaihīBeachLibraryand CommunityHubisduetoopenatthebeginningof July,replacingtheexistinglibraryandservicecentre, whichisonthesamesite.

“Thisapproachturnsconstructionintoa communityresource.Whenabuildingproject givesbacktothecommunityinthisway,everyone benefits,”saidRachaelDavie,WesternBayofPlenty DistrictCouncil’sgeneralmanagerforstrategyand community.

“It’sagreatexampleofsustainabilityinaction –reducingwastewhilesupportingthekindof connected,resourcefulcommunitiesweallwantto livein.”
