ThenewlyintroducedTECTPark Walkwasahitwithfirst-timevisitors. Itincludedatourwithparkrangers identifyingnativespeciesalongtheTe RerengaTunnelTrack.
“Oneofthetruehighlightswasstepping intothehistoric60-metre-longTeRerenga Tunnel–dugentirelybyhand inthe1930susingonlypicks, shovels,andwheelbarrows. BuilttodiverttheTeRerenga Streambeneathwhatisnow SH36,thetunnelremainsa lastingtributetothegritand ingenuityofthepast.”
Anothernewwalkthisyear wasattheŌtanewainuku Trig.Thedayincludeda climbtothesummitlearning thehistoryofthereserveand theconservationworkof ŌtanewainukuKiwiTrust. Therewasalsothedebut
fungiwalkinAongateteForest.“This mighthavebeentheslowest-pacedwalkof thefestival,butwithfungi,thesloweryou go,themoreyousee,”Lambertsaid.
“Fromminiaturetreasurestucked beneaththeleavestotoweringtoadstools overhead,wediscoveredakaleidoscopeof shapes,colours,andtexturesallaroundus.”
Lambertsaidwalkersofallagescameout toenjoylocallandscapesthroughoutthe courseofthefestival.
“Thefeedbackhasbeenoverwhelmingly positive,andit’sclearthere’sagrowing appetiteforthesekindsofexperiences.” Festivalorganisersstartedtheevent in2003withtheaimofgettingpeople enjoyingthegreatoutdoorsand appreciatingitsbeautyandstayingactive. “Heenlistedbutwasdischarged asmedicallyunfitbecausehehad tuberculosisasachild.Nottobe outdone,here-enlistedseveralmonths laterunderhisbrotherRobert’sname andarrangedsomeoneelsetositthe medical.”
Andywaspostedtothe28thMāori Battalionin1941andsawactioninthe westerndesertfortwoyears,Gourlay said.
“In1943,whenthebattalionreached Tripoli,Andywassufferingtuberculosis. HewassentbacktoNewZealandon ahospitalship.Hespentoverayearin hospitalandwasdischargedin1944.
