‘Biggestyet’walkingfestivalconcludes

TheEchoWalkingFestivalhas concludeditsmostsuccessfulseason todate,markinghugeturnoutsand anexpansioninbothsizeandscope.

Thisincludesnotjustinthenumberof walksbutinreach,saidEchoWalking FestivalchairwomanVickiLambert.

“We’veexpandedthefootprintof thefestivaltoincludenewtrailsand communities,movingfurtherintothe WesternBayandtheresponsehasbeen fantastic.”

Thisyear’sEchoWalkingFestival expandedto45walks(gradesonetofive) andoutdoorexperiencesacrosstheregion –fromKaimaiRangetotheCoromandel –withseveralnewwalksintroducedinthe WesternBayofPlenty.

Thecrewalsowelcomedhundredsof walkersduringthecourseofthefestival.

Theintended22dayswaspushedout severalmoreduetoExTropicalCyclone Tamwhichledtopostponements.

Newwalks–fromTePuna toWaihīBeach–included SapphireSpringsNature TrailandSoak,Aongatete NightWalk,Aongatete FungiWalk,Waitekohekohe KidsEducationalWalk, KōreroandKaiat OtawhiwhiMarae,Waihī BeachReservoirLoopand theBaseoftheTrigTrack andtheAongateteShort LoopTrack.Therewasanew partneringwithFlavoursof PlentyfestivalfortheKōrero andKaievent.

Newwalks

ThenewlyintroducedTECTPark Walkwasahitwithfirst-timevisitors. Itincludedatourwithparkrangers identifyingnativespeciesalongtheTe RerengaTunnelTrack.

“Oneofthetruehighlightswasstepping intothehistoric60-metre-longTeRerenga Tunnel–dugentirelybyhand inthe1930susingonlypicks, shovels,andwheelbarrows. BuilttodiverttheTeRerenga Streambeneathwhatisnow SH36,thetunnelremainsa lastingtributetothegritand ingenuityofthepast.”

Anothernewwalkthisyear wasattheŌtanewainuku Trig.Thedayincludeda climbtothesummitlearning thehistoryofthereserveand theconservationworkof ŌtanewainukuKiwiTrust. Therewasalsothedebut

fungiwalkinAongateteForest.“This mighthavebeentheslowest-pacedwalkof thefestival,butwithfungi,thesloweryou go,themoreyousee,”Lambertsaid.

“Fromminiaturetreasurestucked beneaththeleavestotoweringtoadstools overhead,wediscoveredakaleidoscopeof shapes,colours,andtexturesallaroundus.”

Lambertsaidwalkersofallagescameout toenjoylocallandscapesthroughoutthe courseofthefestival.

Growingappetite

“Thefeedbackhasbeenoverwhelmingly positive,andit’sclearthere’sagrowing appetiteforthesekindsofexperiences.” Festivalorganisersstartedtheevent in2003withtheaimofgettingpeople enjoyingthegreatoutdoorsand appreciatingitsbeautyandstayingactive. Thecoreteamthisyearincluded Lambert,JoHeath,KylieWatkins,Max McLean,JimCowan,DougLongdill,Gary Dwyer,MattNicholsonandAliVander Heydenandmanyvolunteerguides.

KatikatiCommunityCentreis introducinganewcoursetoteach people“cookingonabudget”.

UndertheGoodNeighbourumbrella,centre volunteersregularlyvisitWoolworthsKatikati for“foodrescue”whichissharedwithKura Kai,TamawhariuaandKatikatiChristian FoodBank.

KuraKaicommunityco-ordinatorMegan Brankswilltaketheclasses.

Brankssaidthecoursewilllookatsmart shoppingusingseasonalproduce,meal planning,recipes,easycookingtechniquesand tipsandtrickstosaveoningredients.

“Withthepriceofgroceries,alotofpeople arestrugglingtoputtogethermealsinacosteffectiveway,”shesaid.

“Theideaistolearntouseproducemultiple ways–totakeonethingandturnitintothree differentdishes.”Forexample,theymayrun apumpkinsession–andturntheorangefleshedproduceintofrittata,pumpkinand chickpeacurry,andpumpkinsoupbecause thevegetableischeapatthemoment.

KatikatiCommunityCentreadulteducation co-ordinatorSonyaMischewskisaidjustabout everyonewasonabudgetatthemoment andtheideawastoshareknowledgewiththe community.“We’relivinginanareawhere

produceisquiteseasonalsothecoursewill letyouknowwhatyoucancookwithwhat’s affordableatthetime.”

They’vewantedtorunacookingclass inKatikati,Brankssaid,sojumpedatthe chancetoruntheclass.

KuraKaistartedin2020.Volunteersgive theirtime,moneyandresourcestocook nutritiousfamilymeals.Fundsareraisedto purchasechestfreezerswhicharedonatedto highschools.

Localhighschoolleadersthenhelpto identifypeopleinthecommunitywhomay needsomehelp.Themealscanbeforhigh schoolfamiliesoranyoneinthecommunity.

BrightonReserveinWaihīBeach wasabuzzwithbasketballfansofall agesrecently,forthesecondannual ParafedBOPBasketballandSport whānaufunday. Theevent,organisedbyParafedBOP, aimedtoencouragekidsandteenagers ofallabilitiestogivebasketballago, andimprovetheirskillsthroughplaying gamesandjoiningingroupdrills. Thisyear,theeventgrewintoa wonderfulcollaborationofmany organisations.ChelseahSavage,senior developmentofficerfromTaurangaCity BasketballAssociation,attendedand teamedupwithByronVaetoe(ex-Tall Black)fromBasketballNZandWayne ChasefromtheNZRollerBlacks basketballteamtorundrillsandplayin somescrimmageswithalltheattendees.

Activities

Theeventincorporatedactivitiesthat enabledeveryonetobeactiveatalltimes. Therewere3x3basketballgames,

basketballdrills,cricketonthesidelines andinclusivegamesrunbyParafed. Throughofferingmanydifferent games,Parafedwasabletohostkidsof allabilitiesandencourageparticipation ofchildrenwithdisabilitiestobe involvedinalltheactivities.

Coaching

Theattendeeslovedthecoaching providedbyTaurangaCityBasketball andByron,andthoughtthewheelchair basketballerswereincrediblyinspiring. Theyalsoenjoyedhavingagoat playingbasketballinawheelchair, whichwaschallenging.

WaihīBeachesidentMaija MacCalmansaid:“Whatanamazing, energeticandinclusiveday.Therewas somuchhappening–kidshavingago atplayingbasketballinthewheelchairs, cricketonthesidelines,great scrimmagesonthecourt–andeveryone washavingaloadoffun”.

ThecommunitywerehonouringKiwi servicemenandwomenofalleraswho’ve riskedtheirlivesforourfreedom.

Returnedandcurrentservicemenand womenlinedupbesiderepresentatives fromthepolice,FireandEmergencyNew Zealandandanumberofotherservice organisationsoutsideKatikatiLibraryat 5.55am.

Theymarchedtothefrontofthewar memorialhall–tothesoundofadrum beatfromtheKatikatiBand–tostandat attentionforthe6amdawnservice.

Afteranopeningprayer,KatikatiRSA presidentTrevorGilbertsaidthisyear’s AnzacDaywasparticularlypoignantas ithadbeen110yearssincetheGallipoli landing,80yearssincetheendofWorld WarII,and50yearssincetheVietnam Warconcluded.

CliveWilsonKenyondiedpeacefullyat homesurroundedbyhislovingfamilyon March15,2025,inhis101styear.

“WewillnowcreateaCliveKenyon MemorialScholarship.Thiswillbe awardedannuallytoadirectdescendantof servicepeople,toenablethemtocontinue theirstudiesorvocation,”Gilbertsaid.

Followedbyamoment’ssilence,Gilbert said:“Weshouldnowembracethose veteransthathaveservedthiscountry sincethetimeofwarinMalayaand Borneo,Vietnam,Bosnia,EastTimor, Iraq,andPalestineandmanypeacekeeping operationsthattheyhavebeeninvolvedin”.

“Weshouldalsorememberthatthereare thosewhoarestillservingwhodeserveour supportandappreciation.Andthewounds thataretheresultofwarandconflictare notalwaysvisible.”

KatikatiCollegeheadStudentHannahGourlay withherfatherAndrewGourlay,whowas namedafterherGreatUnclewhofoughtin WorldWardIIaspartoftheMāoriBattalion.

Studentconnectionto MāoriBattalion

Gourlaytalkedofherfamilyconnection toWorldWarII.“Thisisaboutmygreat uncleAndrew,whomydadisnamed after.”

Andrew,betterknownas‘Andy’, volunteeredforthearmyshortlyafterthe outbreakofWWII,saidGourlay.

“Heenlistedbutwasdischarged asmedicallyunfitbecausehehad tuberculosisasachild.Nottobe outdone,here-enlistedseveralmonths laterunderhisbrotherRobert’sname andarrangedsomeoneelsetositthe medical.”

Andywaspostedtothe28thMāori Battalionin1941andsawactioninthe westerndesertfortwoyears,Gourlay said.

“In1943,whenthebattalionreached Tripoli,Andywassufferingtuberculosis. HewassentbacktoNewZealandon ahospitalship.Hespentoverayearin hospitalandwasdischargedin1944.

“HereturnedhometoMaketūbut remainedunwelluntilhepassedfroma combinationoftuberculosisandsandin hislungsonJuly31,1946,at27years old.Just17daysafter,hisnephew,my

HeadstudentJackHarraysaidinhis speechthatit’saweirdthing,tryingto understandthescaleofsomethinglike Gallipoli.

“Over2700NewZealanderslosttheir livesthere.That’slikeourentireschool, timesthree,goneinjustafewmonths. Andthatwasonlythebeginningofa muchlongerwar.”

Emotionaldemands Scownsaidtheemotionaldemandsofthe lifeguardingrolearealwaystakenseriously andallmembershaveaccesstomental healthcounselling.
