As a young teen Kyra Murray thought she’d like to be a forensic scientist.

Now she’s setting her sights on biomedical study with the intention of becoming a pharmacist.

Either way it was always going to be a career within the medical field and the Katikati scholar heads off this month to begin making that a reality, aided by the BOP Education Trust.

Murray, who will be studying at Victoria University, was one of 19 students who last week received a BOP Education Trust science, technology and emerging industries scholarship.

The students, from Western and Eastern BOP coastal colleges, will each receive $6000 distributed over their years of tertiary studies.

Joining Murray on the stage receiving their scholarships in Tauranga were fellow Western BOP recipients: Tilly Thomas (Aquinas College), Emily Gillingham (Bethlehem College), Kimera TalbotChinula and Kahutia Tukaki (Mount Maunganui College), Jack Page and Haylee Hextall (Ōtūmoetai College), Hayley Manning and Brooke Barry (Pāpāmoa College), Evan Fryer and Anthony Coe (Tauranga Boys’ College), Jimin Lee and Prachi Patel (Tauranga Girls’ College) and Austen Targett (Te Puke High School).

Murray completed her education last year at Katikati College. She said she felt “complete disbelief ” when she heard she was a scholarship winner.

Recipients are selected annually and determined by the individual colleges/high schools.

Murray is the daughter of Brett Murray and the late Billie Murray.

BOP Education Trust chairman Nick Earl said the trust, which has been operating since 1985, was firmly committed to investing in the tertiary education of the Bay’s young people.

Over the years, 428 students have benefited from the trust’s scholarships, with more than $2 million gifted in supportive funding.

Power and precision roars into town The streets of Tauranga will be humming with the unmistakable, low growl of 150 Ducati motorcycles roaring into town for National Ducati Rally next month.

About 150 Ducati engines will reverberate across the Bay of Plenty as rally riders descend into the city for two days of Ducati appreciation, including a show and shine event, where the gleaming machines will be parked up for the public to admire.

This will be the first time the national rally is held in Tauranga. The rally has run since 2003 and alternates between the North and South Island.

Bay of Plenty ride director John Rowe said there was a big chapter of Western Bay of Plenty riders who travel from Katikati and Waihi Beach. Local members were looking forward to the Ducati Official Club of New Zealand pack coming to home ground, he said.

“There’s a real sense of excitement when Ducati events roll around. The rally creates quite a buzz and the public gets to see how passionate we are about

our bikes. It’s going to be really special for onlookers when they see and hear 150 bikes all heading all in one direction — it’s going to be an epic weekend.”

The pack heads to Trinity Wharf Tauranga on Friday, February 28, for the AGM, pre-function and dinner event.

Saturday morning is the public’s day to appreciate the brand before they roar off for their ride. The riders meet at Tauriko before heading to Pyes Pa, Hamurana to the Mamaku Ranges and then Okoroire.

The gala evening includes a guest speaker and prizegiving.

The Bay of Plenty group rides every few weeks and has a monthly club night.

They’re on the lookout for new members and anyone with a Ducati of any description is welcome — pillion passengers, too. They cater for all ages, Rowe said, and have members in their 20s to their 70s.

Toy Library thanks communityy for new carpet p Katikati Community Toy Library is beginning 2025 on a high – with new carpet throughout its entire facility at Henry Road – and the committee want to thank the Katikati community.

“We couldn’t have done this without the help of the community and the businesses that got behind us,” said Toy Librarian Sandy Goode.

Katikati Community Toy Library Committee had spent two years working to upgrade the facility – to begin a new weekly activity for preschoolers – only to hit trouble at their last hurdle in October 2024.

After paying a $7000 deposit to replace the old, grimy carpet in their facility, the carpet company went into liquidation and the deposit was unrecoverable. “When we found out our hearts just sank,” said Goode. “We were absolutely devastated.”

But when the committee reached out to the Katikati community with its plight to raise the $7000 again to get the carpet laid – it responded, and quickly. The lost $7000 was quickly raised via a Givealittle

page and donations direct to the toy library.

“I was just blown away,” said Goode.

“The community just got right behind us.”

Goode said the committee want to thank Karen Vigus from Giles & Associates, the Katikati Community Board, Katikati Lions, and Katikati Christian Centre who all made sizeable donations towards the carpet.

“We’d also like to thank all the people who donated via Givealittle page – we believe some of our members donated through this and every little bit added up and meant we were able to reach our goal – we are just so grateful!”

The committee also wants to acknowledge Owens Flooring, who came to the rescue to lay the carpet at a competitive price and within a short timeframe. “And we need to thank Dave and his team from the Christian Centre who worked pulling up the old carpet.”

In early-December the new carpet was finally laid. “It has elevated our whole toy library to a new level.

The town’s medical centre has joined onethird of general practices across the country in turning away new patients due to poor funding.

Katikati Medical Centre put a post on its Facebook page early this month letting the community know of its decision and why.

Clinical director and GP Vicky Jones said they’re frustrated at having to do this, but their patient wait time was six weeks for a routine appointment.

“This is not ok, this is why we have closed our books. We need to be able to provide a service to those patients already registered with us.”

Their decision was essentially due to “a lack of Government investment over many years – resulting in chronic underfunding to general practice making it hard to recruit and retain staff”.

She said the wait time was becoming dangerous and they’re not alone in having these long wait times.

“We worry that people will have important diagnoses delayed or simply not come because it just feels too hard.

Last year the Government’s latest capitation funding for family doctors increased to 4% and many GPs across the country said this was too low to meet cost pressures.

“What choice do medical centres have but to put up co-payments if they want to stay

in business?” Jones asked.

There is a limit on the amount GPs can put up co-payments every year.

Fifteen minutes of consultation time – the standard for medical practices across New Zealand – was not enough, Jones said.

“Trying to manage complex patients in 15-minute blocks, manage their labs and referrals, look after them intensely for the year or two it takes them to see be seen by secondary care clinics and then manage fallout when they are discharged too early, has led to high numbers of GP burnout.”

There was also administration such as completing forms, prescriptions, lab results, referral letters and speaking to peers or hospital staff.

“Fifteen minutes is simply not enough to be doing all these tasks. GPs are therefore doing a lot of this work in their own unpaid time.”

Dash of sport at Ōmokoroa Ō k Ōmokoroa Beach B h willll resonate with h the h rhythmic h h splash l h off paddles when the Tauranga Moana Outrigger Canoe Club celebrates its 20th Dash event this weekend.

The event, a reggular on the waka ama calendar, will see around 300 paddlers take part in the Ōmokoroa Dash.

The club has run a 10km regatta for more than 25 years with the dash event in its 20th year. It started as the Matakana Dash, then Maungatapu before making its way to Ōmokoroa Domain in 2013.

The event now features two main race distances; the competitive 10km race, which includes women’s, men’s and mixed team race, and a 5km race designed for juniors, novices and family teams.

Racing begins with the 10km women’s/mixed six-person waka ama and singles men’s waka race.

Race two is the junior and novice teams – the whānau race is to encourage new paddlers and families to race together for the 5km six-person (W6) event. Ages of competitors range from 14 plus.

Tauranga Moana Outrigger Canoe Club manager Rebecca Ryder said waka ama is a value-based sport focused on whakawhanaungatanga (relationships) and manaakitanga (blessing).

“Events typically involve all age ranges, and the sport has become well known for its whānau focus and values.”

They integrate a stop at the halfway mark on the 10km race that involves a short beach sprint, “to mix it up a little”.

As the event now starts and finishes at Ōmokoroa Beach, families often set up at the domain close to the playground to watch the races.

There will be spot prizes and a free sausage sizzle for competitors. It is a smoke and alcohol-free event.

“Everyone is welcoming and while competition is fierce on the water, we are all there to help on the shore.”

The Ōmokoroa Dash will be hosted at Ōmokoroa Domain from 9am-4pm on February 22.
