Oh the security of Father! God the Father once said to His Son “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”. It was the Father booming from Heaven some very important things. It was a public, heavenly, authorised, declaration of the total love and care the Father had for the Son. Wow! But the Son hadn’t done anything yet! He hadn’t raised any dead, turned any water into wine, healed any sick, feed any people, or cast out any demons! He’s just grown up and was who He was! God’s Son! That declaration is what everyone needs! The confirmation of our identity. Has anyone said to you; “This is my beloved Son, this is my beloved daughter, in whom I am well pleased?”. Because this is what fathers do. They give identity. They give security. They love unconditionally. They “father”.

It’s a place where you don’t have to strive, compete, or be someone you think you should be, or reach towards things you know you should have but seem unattainable. Where do our identity messages come from? Is it from our achievements, from behaviour (“this is just the way I am”!), from approval (or disapproval), is it from appearance (do we dress to impress), or is it from our possessions, or, do we get our identity from relationships (it’s who you know you know!)? This is the greatest theft ever – the theft of our identity! Without a proper father figure in our lives, we can grow up with an orphan spirit or attitude. An orphan spirit is someone who has been deprived, for whatever reasons, of proper parental love and care. The orphan spirit is characterised by fear,

insecurity and competitiveness. Just look at many of those in trouble with the law, and, some of the world’s worst despotic dictator leaders; almost without fail all had troubled childhoods without a father figure. Oh the security of Father! It’s a place where you don’t have to strive or compete, reach or strain for acceptance and value. The greatest security we can have is the security of knowing we are loved unconditionally, forgiven completely, and accepted compassionately by our Heavenly Father. Do not say yet four months
Jesus says to His disciples in John 4:35-38:
“Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you did not labour. Others have laboured, and you have entered into their labour.” The nation of Israel were a people with a history in farming and in agriculture and Jesus often spoke in illustrative ways that related to their knowledge and experience of farming and agriculture. What Jesus is portraying here would have been readily understood by a people who knew the season, the times and the processes associated with tilling the soil and with producing a crop. Here, Jesus likens the gathering of the unsaved into His kingdom to the natural harvest and He says to His disciples in effect: the time for ingathering is not still some time off, in fact, harvest time for the ingathering of souls is here and now. And Jesus speaks further about reaping from what others have sown previously and from what we ourselves have not sown. In the context of these verses, He is speaking about seeing souls saved whom others have been
involved with in sowing the seeds of the gospel of salvation. The good news of the gospel of salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone has been preached in our nation, and in this city, for generations. There have been seasons of great fruitfulness and there have been seasons of very little fruitfulness in seeing the unsaved gathered into the Kingdom of God. In times of spiritual barrenness, it is difficult to see the world around us, that is God’s harvest field, as being “white for harvest”. It is difficult to keep sowing and to keep seeking to “gather fruit for eternal life” in times like we live in now. Yet, we need to hear the word of the Lord of the harvest: “Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.” God is about to pour out His Spirit on our nation and already He is preparing the harvest field in this city. It is time to have eyes that see and hears that hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church because it is time for us in this season, to reap what others have sown in times past in an ingathering of souls for the kingdom of God. “The fields are white for harvest.” We invite you to fellowship with us at Jesus First and to visit our website: www.jesusfirst.org.nz By Peter Whitcombe, Jesus First
