Strikes at Affco’s Rangiuru plant are continuing after mediation talks on Monday and Tuesday failed. Strike action has been going on for more than two months and Affco and the Meat Workers Union agreed to meet last week in an attempt negotiate a new contract. Affco wants the strikes to stop if the workers return to work, but the Union says the current working timetable isn’t suitable for its members.
Tauranga overstayers deported
A group of seven overstayers are being deported from New Zealand after failing to be given leave to remain in the country when they appeared in Tauranga District Court this week. Judge Robert Wolff ordered the seven Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese and Tongan to return to their homelands on flights on Wednesday and today when they appeared in court. Deportees include Sarawak resident Dian Shin Koh, who has been living in New Zealand since 2008. He was ordered to return to Kuala Lumpur and was refused any change to flight details. “Regrettably I cannot do anything about that,” says Judge Wolff.

Prayer for the sick... and anything else On January 29 many of churches in Tauranga joined together for a Prayer and Healing Fest at Memorial Park.

Can human beings fix human beings’ problems? Today we hope our global leaders can solve our global problems, for there are many. The world has become like a global village, and that has brought an inherent responsibility to help one another! But can we make our world better by ourselves? Lord of the Flies is a novel by Nobel Prize-winning author William Golding about a group of British boys marooned on a deserted island who try to govern themselves, with disastrous results. It really digs at the question – is human nature good? In the last hundred years we’ve seen a hundred million people murdered under Communism – and pretty much without apology. Their worldview saw many of these deaths as acceptable losses – and if humans really are just advanced animals, what’s wrong
with getting rid of a few ‘black sheep’ anyway? Hopefully you disagree! But it serves as a warning. Without belief in God there is no basis for a fixed moral framework, for our definition of morality comes down to a personal or community decision. And there is no ‘fear factor’ to inhibit wrong either! The Bible warns (as is illustrated in Lord of the Flies) that, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure” (Jeremiah 17:9). Many thus suggest that belief in a God is necessary for human wellbeing, for what else can stop a leader doing something for personal gain when no-one is looking? What else can stop hooded young people looting shops in London? What else can stop humans being ‘human’? This is why many believe faith in God makes us more ‘human’ (meaning selfless as opposed to selfish) as it somehow
Aotearoa - nation of promise Have you ever searched for a rainbow to find that pot of gold? As a small child there was always great excitement to see a rainbow in the sky. Beautiful colours, flowing gracefully and powerfully into each other. As children we were told that at the end of the rainbow was a pot of gold. There was always the hope that one day we would be able to follow the rainbow and find the pot of gold. Riches and success were to be just around the corner. As one grew in understanding you realised that the pot of gold story was just that, a story! However, the rainbow is still a sign and promise to us from God the Father, that never again would the earth be flooded as in the days of Noah. It is a sign that His love is still there for us and His promises are for evermore. Many are still searching for the childhood dream of a ‘pot of gold’ and remaining disappointed. The true gold is found in the vein of God, deep within His heart. It is a vein of true love that has an ancient call to come
to Him for promises as a nation to be fulfilled. In Matthew 23 v 37 Jesus Christ when speaking to the crowds and His disciples said: ‘how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate’. As a nation we are seeking answers and solutions for the future but still looking for the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. A short-term solution does not always release the fullness of promise for the future. Sugar-coated gifts do not remain sweet forever. There is always a process to get to the promise with a dropping off of old garments like wrong mind sets, relationships and compromise. The Father’s heart is full of promise just waiting to be released if only Aotearoa would come to Him and allow Him to gather us all under His wings.
