Does familiarity with church breed contempt? Church attendance has been in decline in the West for half a century, and it is only now showing first signs of levelling off. What has happened? Could it be that familiarity bred contempt? The 21st Century Westerner sits with a virtual ‘buffet’ of religions before them to choose from. But, ironically, the religion of our heritage shines uniquely, and continues to grow throughout the world. To understand Christianity, the Bible’s claim (in a nutshell) is that Jesus is the key to ultimate hope, for He alone has ‘died in our place’. God sorted a problem out (which many of us did not know existed) because it separated us from God. The problem is our sin (our wrongs or selfishness). But God’s solution now exists – it was Jesus. So unique was that man in His message, miracles, and life that it is generally undisputed that He was the earth’s greatest ever occupant! His influence has been
unparalleled. His moral teaching was simply outstanding. But His message was the most powerful thing, for He offered a solution to our problems that made sense, and countless millions have faced the grave with confidence because of it.
Indeed, the Bible says that faith in Jesus is the key to ultimate hope! More than a man, it says He was a saviour. He is, in fact, the only major religious leader to
have claimed to be God; to have it claimed of Him that He rose from death; to have done such miracles, fulfilled such prophecies, to have been said to be sinless, and to have died for our sin because of love. Why would we leave a faith so unique and hopeful? Might Christianity become central in our Western culture again? Only time will tell. But the good news is that the offer of hope remains in the interim! With faith there is no need for fear of death! ‘ “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death is your sting?” The sting of death is sin… But thanks be to God! A team of Tauranga locals leave town on Saturday for a two week trip to Thailand to work with the Rahab organisation. The first part will be in Bangkok working with Rahab. The second will be in Chiang Mai working in a slum, school and hill tribe, providing school supplies and educating people about human trafficking. Rahab is a Christian ministry in a red light district in Pat Pong where 4000 girls a night work the bars. Rahab works to get girls out of prostitution and offers them new work, such as jewellery making or hairdressing. The team will fix up the Rahab house, make jewellery and take the girls bowling for fun. The focus will be on talking to girls in the bars about the religious group.
The women go to the bars while the men stay off the streets and pray for the women. Gill Raine, the group leader, says this is the most challenging part for her because it is way out of her comfort zone. “It’s just such an evil, abusive environment, and so to go in and not show any shock or upset is hard. “You still have to smile and talk to the girls.” She says her favourite part is showing the girls that someone values them despite what life has thrown them. Juan Cusi says he is looking forward to being a part of the work. “I just want to make them laugh, make them smile, make them know that somebody out there cares no matter what and that there’s hope.” Juan says.
