Happy birthday! This coming Sunday the Christian Church celebrates its birthday. After the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, His disciples (those who had been with Him during His earthly ministry) were hidden away from the authorities of the time. Their leader had been sentenced to death like a murderer, when His only crime had been to show people the truth about God. Even though the risen Jesus had been with the disciples for 40 days, they were still a scared bunch of people. However, they stayed together and waited as Jesus had

commanded, praying behind closed doors. Then, in a moment, everything changed. The words of Jesus came true, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) Supernatural power changed these fearful people in an instant. The power was so great, that it drew thousands of people, from all over Jerusalem, who had heard the commotion and wanted to discover what was happening. The disciples shared their experiences
with those who had gathered. The power of God was so great that at least 3000 people were convicted firstly of their sins, and then that Jesus really was the promised Messiah! They believed, repented and joined the disciples in sharing the Good News with everyone. The Church was born! Disciples have continued the work down through the ages, not always as wisely or as truthfully as Jesus commanded, but usually because of their love for God and His creation. Forgiven all, forgive all Paul says in Ephesians 4:32 that we are to “forgive one another, as God in Christ forgave you”. Literally, forgive one another just as, or even as, or in like manner as God in Christ forgave you. Our reason or motive for forgiving others is that we are those who are recipients of forgiveness. We are those who have been forgiven much, not because of anything of our own merit but because Christ was the perfect sacrifice for sin. As those who are recipients of forgiveness, as those who have been forgiven much, we have no right whatsoever to withhold forgiveness from those who have sinned against us. In this statement about forgiveness, Paul says, “As

God in Christ forgave you” - past tense because God has forgiven us in Christ. Paul writes in Colossians 2:13–14; “And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by cancelling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This He set aside, nailing it to the cross.” If we came to salvation in Christ through genuine repentance, we have been forgiven every sin that we committed before we were born again. Even though our sin was red as scarlet, Jesus paid the price for our sin and in Him we are made white as snow. The blood of Jesus doesn’t cover our sin. His blood washes away the sin of those who come to God in repentance and God removes that sin as far as the east is from the west and He calls it to remembrance no more. Which is the reason also that we are to forgive and to forget because we are to “forgive one another, as God in Christ forgave you”. Respected preacher and writer Dr Martyn Lloyd–Jones makes these comments: “Foolish people who misunderstand Christianity are saying today that they refuse to see any wrong in people at all. That is not Christianity, that is make-believe! Certain people, says Paul, have done wrong to you! Forgive them! He does not say: pretend that they have done nothing; that is not forgiveness.
Forgiveness is realising to the full extent the wrong they have done, and then forgiving them. It means forgetting also and we are to forgive and forget readily and freely.” Isaiah 53:5–6 says of Jesus: “But He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned-every one-to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” That’s how we are forgiven! God Himself took our sin and placed it on His Son. Our sin was punished in Christ so that in Christ we might be forgiven. If God has done that for us, how can we choose to refuse forgiveness towards anyone else? We have no right to do so.
