God, not gold, the reward in life’s race The first Olympic Games for which we still have written records were held in 776 BCE, though it is generally believed that the Games had been going on for many years already. The ancient Olympic Games grew and continued to be played every four years for nearly 1200 years. In 393 CE, the Roman emperor
Theodosius I, abolished the Games. Approximately 1500 years later, a young Frenchmen named Pierre de Coubertin began their revival. And in 1896, at the first modern Olympic Games, was held. In the Bible in the apostle Paul’s writings we see glimpses of the running races which were part of what we would call the Olympics. Paul is using the picture of the running race but his point is not a running race but the race of life. And he does not talk about a gold medal but the reward that God has for us of a home in heaven. What is the church, really? on the inter-dependent relationships of each part of the body and on the specific functions of each part, as opposed to structure based on lines of authority or hierarchal systems seen in business models. This means also that the church is not ‘leader-less’. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:28 that God has appointed in the church “first apostles, second prophets, third teachers...”. He says also in Ephesians 4:11–16 that when Jesus ascended, He gave gifts of gifted individuals to the church and for the church: “And He (Jesus) gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” Paul also makes it clear that these functions and giftings are for today because he says in verse 13 that they were given to the church until… “until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ”, which clearly has never happened in church history. Leadership therefore is defined by God’s calling and gifting and is outworked on the basis of function within the body, in relationship with the other parts of the body. The church is Christ’s body, that which is to be the visible expression of Jesus in the earth and the vessel He uses to advance the kingdom of God. The Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 1:22–23 that God has placed all things under the feet of Christ and that God has given Him as “head over all things to the Church”, which is Christ’s body, and that the Church is “the fullness of Him Who fills all in all [for in that body lives the full measure of Him Who makes everything complete, and Who fills everything everywhere with Himself ].” Paul says in Ephesians 3:10 that it is through the Church that “the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places”. In verse 21, Paul says that unto Jesus “be glory in the Church”. Ephesians 5:25–6 tells us that “Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her” and that He will “present the Church to Himself in splendour, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish”. We see from these verses alone that the Church is significant in the plans, the purposes and the heart of God. It is significant that the most widely used metaphor used in scripture to describe the church is that of a body. The church, like a natural body, is a living organism made up of interdependent parts that work together in dynamic unity, in yielded and submitted relationship together, under the instruction of the head, who is Christ. The church is not an organisation, a business or a club. As in a natural body, there is clear structure in the spiritual body that is the church, but structure that is based
